“Our mother always brought back stories from her visits to very poor countries. One day we decided that we wanted to help out, so we started volunteering.” Their first volunteer gig occurred five years ago, when both assisted with PCI’s annual Walk4Water 5K event. Mickey explained, “The walk simulates a 5K walk that many women and children have to do to fetch water in the countries where PCI works.” Now Thomas and Mickey work alongside the main events coordinator, performing such tasks as setting up signs, ensuring trash is picked up, directing traffic, and much, much more. Upcoming events that they’ll help with include the annual Day at the Races on Aug. 1, and an annual gala in the fall. The two also work independently to raise money for PCI. Thomas, who has vast entrepreneurial knowledge because of his involvement with the Junior Achievement program, proclaimed, “I love running my business with my brother and the fact that it gives back to people in need. There is so much to do, and I have to say that my time with Junior Achievement has helped me realize what it takes to actually make money.” Mickey added, “Our biggest accomplishment was raising $1,000 for PCI, and going to the office to donate it.” When they’re not lending their services to PCI, the brothers love camping, fishing, sailing, skiing, hiking through Torrey Pines, eating frozen yogurt at Golden Spoon and dining at the En Fuego Cantina & Grill. They also enjoy traveling, and visit Germany every year to see their grandparents. Hoping to recruit others interested in worldly causes, Thomas added, “PCI always needs volunteers to help at the office or at their events, so contact us!” ¢
