What is the Special Ingredient?

W

atching each issue of this magazine come together is a very exciting thing for me. Regardless of the number of editorial meetings that we have, it is always fun to see the completed design in print. We feature local students, families, volunteers, businesses and other stories as they relate to our immediate community. We often talk about how there’s a little something for everyone inside of these pages – whether you are 4 years old or 104 years old. Many people often ask me about our community and what makes it a special place. It’s easy to run down the typical list – beautiful homes, high-ranking schools, nice people, close proximity to a lot of things, etc. We talk about these things all of the time. In fact, many of us moved to our community specifically for these things. But there’s something more. There seems to be a special ingredient that can be found in our great communities. I believe that special ingredient is volunteerism. I recently had a conversation with a friend discussing how volunteers have such a positive impact on our local town. In fact, he took it one step further and stated that our community is as nice as it is specifically because of the contribution and donation of time of local volunteers. The more I thought about it, the more I had to agree. There’s something special that happens when people donate their precious time Derrick Breaux for the greater good of the community. Volunteering comes in many Publisher forms. Some people are capable of donating great amounts of time and energy. Others have a more limited ability to donate time. The important ingredient is that contributions are in fact made – big or small. Regardless of the amount of individual time that a person can gift to the community, it’s hard to deny the huge difference that it makes. Whether you are running one of the communities’ nonprofit organizations, volunteering at local events, or simply picking up the occasional piece of litter left behind on the sidewalk, our communities are definitely better places because of the people that do it. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Strong Through Song

KRISTI KRAUSE American Idol

S

ince being on American Idol in 2011, Kristi Krause has performed all over San Diego. You can find her performing at Capri Blu Italian Bistro in 4S Ranch almost once every weekend, as well as the Rancho Bernardo Inn, Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort, La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, and many other places. This past summer, she released her first single on iTunes, titled Pink Lemonade. “I tend to relate a lot of my songs to the atmosphere I’ve grown up in. Being from San Diego, I spend a lot of my time at the beach. Therefore I do get a lot of my inspiration in my songs from the ocean and living that California lifestyle you may say,” said Kristi. The music video for Pink Lemonade is currently out on YouTube. Over the years since Idol, Kristi has used her voice for great causes. She sang at the Susan G. Komen Run in 2012 and was featured as a vocalist on The HOPE Telethon, which raises money for the Helen Woodward Center. In the meantime, Kristi’s ambition remains strong. “My plan is to continue performing and making a name for myself in the music industry as a singer/songwriter. I picked up the guitar and started writing songs when I was fifteen and I have never looked back,” said Kristi. You can find her YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/kristikrause, and find her song Pink Lemonade on iTunes. 

PUSD

Gift Matching

{Donations Made Easy

by JESSICA WOODS

R

esidents are always looking for ways to give back to their communities. In the Poway Unified School District (PUSD), there’s an easy way to donate to your local schools, and then maximize that donation through your employer: the Matching Gifts Program. Here’s how it works: let’s say you want to donate $500 to PUSD. The next step would be to visit www.matchinggifts.com/powayusd, and type in your employer in the search box. For example, if I worked at Business A, I would type in the name “Business A”. Once you find the company selection that you work for, click it, and it will lead you to a page with contact information and steps to have your company match that donation. What does that mean? It means that if you donate $500 to PUSD Foundation, or to an individual school, your employer may match that and also donate $500. Steve Hafner, founder and CEO of HEP Development, said, “We frequently receive updates

22 • 92127Magazine.com • January | February 2014

from clients on how their matching gift campaigns are going. We were elated to hear from a couple of clients who didn’t do just a double but, yes, tripled and quadrupled their matching gift revenues.” The Gift Matching program is not confined to a particular season, but runs year-round. Some businesses will allow retirees and spouses of employees to donate and gift match. Either way, you and your employer are helping to benefit local schools throughout PUSD. Some of the participating businesses include: Abbott Laboratories, Apple, AT&T, Bank of America, BAE Systems, Hewlett Packard, Nokia, Northrup Grumman Corporations, Pfizer, Qualcomm, Sony Electronics Inc., Takeda San Diego, and more. To learn more about making a donation to the PUSD Foundation or to donate classroom supplies for a particular school, program, or teacher, please visit www.pusdfoundation.org and get started giving back. 

t’s amazing what a girl can do with a lot of talent, no fear of traveling, and a soccer ball. Marley Canales is one girl you can count on if you need her to take her talent across the pond. Traveling over a hundred days of this past year alone, Marley is a soccer player with sheer passion and dedication to her sport. Marley loves living in 92129 because of the tight-knit community. Her older sister Miranda has been a big inspiration. “Miranda was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 14. Miranda has had to deal with the disease and she has shown strength and responsibility," said Marley. When Marley speaks of her sister it is clear that Miranda has passed on her determination to adapt and overcome any obstacle. Marley explained, “Coping with diabetes is not an easy task for anyone and she has shown me that you can’t let anything stop you from your dreams”. Marley is dreaming big. After all of her travels from Costa Rica to England, she has no interest in slowing down. People to People (www.peopletopeople.com), an organization that challenges youths

24 • 92127Magazine.com • November | December 2013

to expand their global awareness and discover new experiences they never thought possible, has just invited Marley to be a student ambassador. What a great honor for such an amazing girl. There is a pattern in Marley’s life. Whatever she is involved in, she is recognized as a leader. On her latest trip to England, she was named captain as she played against England’s national team. Currently Marley is playing for three teams. U17 US National Team, Cal South’s ODP Team and her club team Surf U17. Within her club team she is competing against the best teams from across the United States. Surely many of Marley’s teammates know what an incredible player she is, but what is so enduring about Marley is a couple of years ago she donated her hair to Locks of Love. Now that her hair is long enough she is preparing for her second donation. When most girls fret and are frantic over their hair, Marley cuts her hair for a cause. With the talent and drive of Marley Canales, this is one girl to keep your eye on – just like she keeps her eye on the soccer ball. ¢

n late November, ZCode Media hosted a mixer for the Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) at our headquarters. For the first time, there was a record of 185 members and guests in attendance. RB Honorary Mayor Alex Monroe kicked off the night with a thank you to the hosts and attendees. There were door prizes that were won, including a bottle of wine and an enticing gift basket. Miguel’s catered with delicious finger foods and chips and dip, and live music was provided by the Sandy Devito Combo. Special guests included Miss Rancho Bernardo, Katherine Da Silva, and Miss Rancho Bernardo Teen, Kayla Anderson. It was a fantastic night, filled with good food, new friends, and lots of networking. Ralphs FAMILY HISTORY

T

he Rancho Bernardo Historical Society recently presented Linda Ralphs Kaeser as part of their speaker program in late November. Accompanied by large photos of the ranch, her father, and aerial photos, Linda took the audience back through the history of the five generations of Ralphs, and how their business grew from Los Angeles grocery business into Rancho Bernardo and the surrounding area. Linda, whose grandfather purchased the 3,600 acre 4S Ranch in 1938, shared her memories of horseback riding and bird hunting when she came on vacation with her extended family. Rancho Bernardo Road was a dirt extension of Black Mountain Road and cattle grazed on the hillsides. Linda is the family historian and, as the older generation passed away, she and her six cousins have been actively involved in both the development and preservation of the ranch. They have kept the

original Ranch House surrounded by 1,200 untouched acres, and in 1981 formed a development enterprise which created 4S Ranch as the complete planned community we see today. The Ralphs family assumed the role of developers with the philosophy ‘by families, for families, with families’. They designed the community, put the infrastructure in place, and still own much of the land. Lots were sold to home builders, schools and businesses. Linda still sits as an elected representative on the HOA Board of 4S Ranch and the 4S Ranch Business Park Corporation, and said her job now is to protect the vision they so carefully cultivated. The Historical Society has scheduled educational programs on the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. in the RB Historical Society Museum at 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte. For more information visit www.rbhistoricalsociety.org. 

Not Your Typical love Story

IN HONOR OF VALENTINE’S DAY, WE HAD COUPLES FROM 92127 SUBMIT THEIR STORIES OF HOW THEY MET AND FELL IN LOVE. Mario & Diane Scavuzzo

D

iane Scavuzzo – “I was throwing a dinner party for a close friend of mine and Mario Scavuzzo was on the guest list. He called asking if he could cook an appetizer, and when I heard his voice I knew he was the man for me. Not only was he European, tall, dark and handsome, but he was a fabulous cook. Not your typical romantic love story, it took us three rounds of dating over several years to get it ‘right’ but ever since we met in 1997 and then married four years later, it has been love at first sight.”

Todd & Andrea O’Hara

A

ndrea O’Hara – “Todd and I first met at Bernardo Heights Middle School and continued on to Rancho Bernardo High School. Although we had separate groups of friends, in junior year one of my good friends ended up dating Todd for two years, which brought us closer as friends. Our paths crossed again at age 21, and we dated for six months, but college and work lead us separate ways. As fate would have it, during the planning stage of our ten year high school reunion, Todd and I reconnected. After two years of dating, Todd proposed to me and we married at Saint Terese Catholic Church in Carmel Valley. Most importantly, my then four-year old daughter held his hand at the alter and became his step-daughter.”

Douglas & Kelly Lee

K

elly Lee – “Who knew that persimmons would lead to a perfect match? On one fall afternoon, our moms happened to be shopping for persimmons at a local grocery store. After much discussion about the perfect fruit to select, the conversation naturally led to the subject of their children. Upon learning that their children were both single and in Northern California, a matchmaking idea was formed! Within three months of our blind date, we were engaged and married a year later. Having been married for over fifteen years, we can’t deny that old-fashioned matchmaking sometimes works!”

FemCity San Diego

Anne Von Dyl Finds Passion in Her Professional Life by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Spark Photography

34 • 92127Magazine.com • January | February 2014

W

hile new words are consistently cropping up in the English language, “femfessional” isn’t one you’ll find in the dictionary – yet. Ask Anne Von Dyl of Del Sur, and she’ll have an answer for you. After twenty years of work in sales and development for San Diego based companies, Anne Von Dyl recognized her own “femfessional” status. In addition to standing as current head of business development for the Better Business Bureau of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Anne also serves as the chapter president for FemCity San Diego, an organization committed to the professional growth of business women. “I take it as an honor to be given this opportunity to establish a resource for business women to use to help their business expand and careers grow,” Anne stated. Originally from San Diego, Anne is excited about bringing the opportunities of FemCity to her hometown. The local chapter, one of 51 chapters across the country, hosts workshops, programs, and events to motivate, inspire, and support the growing community of Femfessionals in San Diego. These women are characterized by their ambitious and driven professional life, as well as their positive attitudes, open mindedness, and commitment to bettering their professional and personal communities. “To hear about their professional journeys; the risks, the sacrifices and challenges they face are nothing short of inspiring,” Anne acknowledged. The driving force for Anne’s involvement in the FemCity chapter was her time spent in the San Diego business community. “I have met an amazing and dynamic array of women that have made countless contributions to the success of the organizations they either own or work for. This is why I am thrilled to establish a Femfessionals chapter in my hometown,” Anne shared. Beyond her service to FemCity, Anne also spends time volunteering at her sons’ elementary schools. Anne and her husband, Lance, have been married twenty years and have two sons, ages ten and eight. Family time includes all the San Diego favorites: bike rides, dog walking, and days at the beach. As a mother, wife, business woman, and volunteer, Anne lives the life of a Femfessional. Today, she is inspired to create a community that nurtures these simultaneous and demanding roles for San Diego’s business women. With Anne’s passion for FemCity San Diego and her connections within the business community, “femfessional” may soon become a commonplace word in professional circles. ¢

arol and Paul Ware met years ago while in graduate school. “We met while sharing statistical data for our Masters theses concerning women in the workplace,” explained Carol. After they were married, Paul’s career in the military – where he served in Desert Storm, then later worked as a government prosecutor and military judge – took them all over the world, living in such countries as Japan, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia and Holland. Later, when they had children, the family spent three years commuting between Hawaii (where Paul was assigned to work) and their home in San Diego. Paul is now retired from the Marine Corps as Lieutenant Colonel, and is currently a candidate in the 2014 election for Superior Court Judge of San Diego – a place he and his family are happy to call “home.” Carol, Paul and their two children, Rachel (12) and John (10)

have been living in 4S Ranch for the past ten years. “We love the community feeling, the family neighborhoods, the local facilities and parks, and the quality of the schools,” said Carol. The kids attend the local schools and are involved in a slew of community activities. “Rachel has a black belt in taekwondo and a black belt in extreme martial arts (with the Xtreme Starz Academy of Martial Arts), performs and competes for dance team at Danceology, plays lacrosse (Del Norte Nighthawks), and has performed in local and church choirs,” shared Carol. “John has a black belt in taekwondo and a black belt in extreme martial arts (with the Xtreme Starz Academy of Martial Arts), plays soccer for local Arsenal Football Club, plays 4S Little League baseball, and is a Webelos Cub Scout.” The parents are equally involved in the community. Paul currently serves on the 4S Ranch Del Sur Community Foundation Board and previously served on the board of Torrey Pines Christian Church. Apart from volunteering at both kids’ schools, Carol is a board member of the Stone Ranch Foundation, the 4S Ranch Del Sur Community Foundation, and is Board President of Oak Valley Falcon Foundation.“[I] have also served as a vice-president on Board of St. Germaine’s Children’s Charity and worked with various children’s charity groups,” added Carol. Although the Wares are serious about staying involved in their community, don’t let them fool you - they always love to have fun. They are especially proud of their “legendary” Halloween parties, and enjoy poking fun at themselves. “Our garage looks like 'Hoarders' meets 'Storage Wars,'" joked Carol. When asked about their favorite hobby, Carol replied: “Throwing lots of parties and more parties – and sometimes more parties!” ¢

hen Sue was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her mid-30s, the Klinkers transformed their lives. Now needing a one story home to aid Sue, they moved to Bel Etage, confident selecting a home within the renowned Poway Unified School District was an excellent investment. They also learned how to live with arthritis and met children who had endured joint replacement surgeries and daily pain by joining the Arthritis Foundation. They became active members, and Terry served on the Board of Directors for six years, operating the last two years as chairman.

38 • 92127Magazine.com • January | February 2014

The Klinkers’ early volunteer work with the Arthritis Foundation led to additional volunteerism. They became active in the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church. Terry served as an elder, and Sue joined Tied in Prayer, a group which creates quilts for baptized babies and supports charitable causes. Terry also served on the Spirit of the Fourth committee for two years and took charge of the VIP Reception before the parade. Due to their volunteering commitment, the Klinkers use their business, Sport Clips, to support their community. As owners they develop marketing

campaigns, network with other business owners and recruit talent. They explained, “We have a flexible schedule, which allows us to prioritize where we can best invest our time.” Last summer they were a major sponsor of Movies in the Park, and they’ve greatly contributed to the Help a Hero campaign, which funds programs for active duty military and veterans. They’ve collected donations at all four stores, and this year’s Help a Hero campaign will wrap up with a softball tournament and a 5K run. The Klinkers revealed, “Since there are so many military families in San Diego, we see the benefit locally from our efforts.” Confident their work and volunteering aid others, the Klinkers are free to enjoy other pursuits too. They have two grown married children. Their daughter, Abbie, has a son and works for Ashford University, and their son, Jeff, has four children and is a pilot for United Express. For fun Terry likes to play golf, and Sue quilts, running her own side business. Over the years Abbie benefited from her mom’s seamstress talents, being able to wear unique outfits, including dresses with English smocking. Together, the Klinkers enjoy viewing stage productions at Broadway San Diego, dining at local restaurants like Athen’s Market Grill, Café Merlot and Karl Strauss or indulging at Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt. ¢

:::: HEALTHY SMILES

I’m embarrassed by my smile, what can be done to fix it? SMILE MAKEOVER

Y

our teeth are one of the first things people look at when they meet you. Your smile is the key to your facial appearance. Some people may judge your personality, lifestyle, and habits based on your teeth’s appearance, but these don’t mean you have to give up on achieving that perfect smile. Fortunately, there are effective options available today to counter these problems.

BEFORE

AFTER

Teeth deteriorate over the years, gradually taking on more and more imperfections that betray our age or make us look older than we really are. Their color can change over time, losing their brightness. Dental wear can shorten teeth, making them look stubby. Years of food, nicotine and fluid stains can also stain teeth permanently. Or, teeth may shift over time, leaving them with crowding or spaces. A smile makeover is a combination of cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as porcelain veneers, whitening, clear aligners, and bonding to greatly improve the appearance of your smile in a relatively short time. The essence of good cosmetic dentistry is to combine modern techniques with artistic flair to turn back the clock, and make it so that nobody can guess what has been done. With the aid of the latest technological advances in dentistry, a smile makeover can take years off your looks, say goodbye to damaged, discolored, and misaligned teeth, and restore your beautiful, youthful smile in as little as a single visit. 

Founded in 2004, the Knit for the Cure Campaign recruits knitters & crocheters to create handmade items to be sold at various Komen events, one of which included the Race for the Cure which was held on Nov. 3 in Balboa Park. Although most items are created by San Diego County residents, the campaign had knitters and crocheters from all over including Connecticut, Virginia, and New York. This year, some San Diego knitters also formed a team and participated in the race. Knit for the Cure raised over $5,300 this year. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised remain right here in San Diego to cover every step of the breast health journey – from education, outreach, mammograms, and diagnostics, to surgeries, chemotherapy, and more. The remaining 25% of each dollar raised funds national research to discover the causes and cures for breast cancer. Del Sur Celebrates with Lights

Twinkling trees, seasonal eats, snow, music and a neighborhood lights contest drew families out of their homes on Dec. 6 and 7 for Del Sur’s annual Del Sur Lights event. The festive two-day event is one of many activities planned for residents of the San Diego newhome community each year. “Del Sur Lights is about making memories while sipping hot chocolate, sharing homemade goods with neighbors, and walking around to check out the lights and décor on your street,” said Bill Ostrem, President at Del Sur. Judged by a panel of fifth graders from Del Sur Elementary School, the Starr family at Del Sur was chosen as the winner. Congratulations to the Starr Family.

Turtleback Elementary School will be holding a shoes and clothing drive called “Shoes With Heart”, until Jan. 30. They are collecting gently used shoes and clothing, with a collection bin located outside the school by the front office. When turning in shoes, please make sure they are in a bag with the teacher’s name and room number. The shoes and clothes collected are weighed and purchased, then sent to impoverished countries to be sold at afforadable prices for that community. In addition to shoes and clothing, they will also accept purses, belts, backpacks, and hats. Last year, Shoes With Heart collected $438 worth of clothes and shoes, with the funds going back to the school. The class that brings in the most shoes will get a milk and cookies party. Cookies For A Cause: GS Troop 8906

The Girl Scout cookie season launches on Feb. 2. When selling America’s favorite confection, girls learn important skills – such as goal-setting and business management – while raising money for Girl Scouting. All proceeds stay Troop 8906 members Resse Loseke, local to support troop activities, Nailah Hollomon, and Brooklyn Emerson community-wide Girl Scout programs and service projects. This year, 4S Ranch’s Troop 8906 voted to raise $100 for Adobe Bluffs Elementary’s “Ability Awareness Action Celebration.” During the annual event, students hear from community members who are living with disabilities. The school, which has a high population of special needs children, runs programs year-round focusing on anti-bullying, inclusion and respect. “Our troop believes it’s important to give back to our community, and this year we are going to help by donating some of our cookie money to help teach kids to be kind to each other,” said Nailah Hollomon, age nine. She and the other girls in her troop attend Willow Grove Elementary.

Teachers will submit “wish lists” of supplies needed to support the students learning in their classrooms now. The Sweetheart Dance will be on Feb. 13, with food trucks arriving at 5 p.m., followed by Rob the DJ at 6 p.m. New to the Sweetheart Dance this year will be a photo booth, complete with props to take fun pictures with friends and family. While all this fun is going on in February, Monterey Ridge will be preparing for their biggest fundraiser of the school year, the annual Fun Run. Money raised from the Fun Run goes directly to the classrooms in the form of Teacher Mini Grants, to purchase supplies for the classroom, and Field Trip Mini Grants, for fun trips. The Fun Run will take place on the Monterey Ridge track on March 5, but sponsorship opportunities are still available, and needed, to make this event a success. Anyone interested in sponsoring the Fun Run may contact Lisa Herndon at lherndon@gmail.com.

New Photography Class for DNHS The Del Norte High School Counseling Department has announced an additional Photography 1 class this trimester during first period. If a student takes this class, followed by Photography 2, both classes will fulfill the one year Visual and Performing Arts requirement for UC/CSU admission. If your student is interested in adding this course, pick up a Schedule Change Request from the counselor’s office, or go online at www.delnortenighthawks.com to print one out. Turn it in to your student’s assigned counselor.

Palomar Medical Center Honored in Becker’s

The Palomar Medical Center in Escondido was named one of the country’s 50 greenest hospitals, and is the only hospital in Southern California to make the list. Becker’s Hospital Review awards “forwardthinking healthcare organizations that regard ecological health, green initiatives and environmental stewardship as foundational pieces of its mission.” Becker’s applauded Palomar Medical Center’s use of evidence-based sustainable elements in the design including courtyards, natural light, a green roof and extensive use of LED lights. It also noted that health system staff is now educating other professionals on how to build and operate “hospitals of the future.” Congratulations to the staff at Palomar Medical Center for all their hard work!

Upcoming Recycling Dates from P.I.N. Waste

P.I.N. Waste will be doing more services starting this January. From Jan. 17 to June 20, the annual Waste Cart Cleaning will be making the rounds. Visit the website to find out when your neighborhood can have their cans cleaned. Starting Jan. 31, the first annual E-Waste, U-Waste, and Unwanted Clothing Pickup will take place. Four times a year P.I.N. Waste will retrieve your E-Waste, U-Waste and bagged clothing. Similarly, starting on Feb. 1, will be Quarterly Bulk Item Pickup. As with the E-Waste/U-Waste/Unwanted Clothing Pickup, four times a year P.I.N. Waste will pick up unwanted, large bulk items. For all of the above pickup days, they ask that you schedule your pick-ups in advance, at least one week prior to your normal service day. Email service@pinwaste.com or fill out the service request tab at www.pinwaste.com to schedule. Don’t forget to state what items you have for pickup when registering.

New Year, New Students

The new year is upon us, and the Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) are already geared up for some great events ahead. On Jan. 16, there will be a kindergarten information night for prospective students and families, starting at 6 p.m. Francine Good, Director of Development at MCS, said, “The elementary principal will talk about the kindergarten entrance exam, kindergarten teachers will give an overview of the program, and there will be parents whose children have already gone through our kindergarten program, speaking about their experience.” On Jan. 24, MCS will be participating in a Spelling Bee at Tri-City Christian School, and on Feb. 24, there will be a creative writing event for MCS students at Horizon Christian Academy. To stay updated on the above events and those to come, as well as campus tours, visit www.maranathachristianschools.org.

They provide comprehensive dental care to children of all ages, from infants to young adults, as well as children with special health care needs. The office supports schools, the local library and various foundations in the community. At Elite Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her staff strive to create a positive experience for every patient, every day. “We are a small boutique practice and are focused on each family’s needs. ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and receive the best possible care. She understands that each child is unique and must be treated as such, which is an important aspect of a child’s overall health. “These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that by getting to know each child individually will help create a positive environment,” explained Dr. Ambrosio. Parents are welcome in the treatment rooms, all of which are private and not in an open setting with other families. “A lot of thought was put into the planning of the

practice. I wanted people to feel welcomed and never wanted a family to feel overlooked or rushed,” said Dr. Ambrosio. It is the friendly and compassionate staff at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her staff not only have the knowledge, but the skills and personality to provide the best care to patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment, to the time a family walks out the door, they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan and a mother, both of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (3) and Amelie (2), and recently had her third child, Camdyn, this past November. “Being a mother has really changed the way I practice. As a mother, I can see the three different relationships involved – the doctor, parent, and child. My goal for every child is that they are healthy, safe and happy.” 

hile the sport of lacrosse has its roots as an ancient Native American game and is considered one of the oldest team sports in North America, we are just getting suited up here in 92127. Coming into its second year as a league, 4S Ranch Lacrosse provides a platform for young athletes wanting to get in on the buzz that lacrosse has created in San Diego and nationwide. Traditionally seen as an East Coast sport, lacrosse has seen an expo-

nential growth in popularity, especially here on the West Coast. We talked with Liam Mbuthia, Director of the 4S Ranch Lacrosse League and learned a little about the sport and the options that our active youth have at their disposal.

Q&A

with 4S Ranch Boys Lacrosse Director, Liam Mbuthia

LIAM-JOHN MBUTHIA

At a Glance

Full Name: Age: Community: Profession: Education: Family:

Contact: Hobbies / Interests:

Liam-John Mbuthia 35 Rancho Peñasquitos Online Marketing Manager United States Military Academy/Syracuse University My beautiful wife, Shannon; son, Jack Henry, born October 2012, and my crazy dog Lucy. My parents David and Mary recently got wise and relocated from Long Island to Hawaii, so that is where I will be in the offseason, as much as possible. 4sranchlax@gmail.com Before Jack Henry was born, I had a ton. Now I want to spend all my spare time with him and his mom.

4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE IS IN ITS SECOND YEAR. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BRING LACROSSE TO THE 4S RANCH AREA? All successful high school lacrosse programs have feeder programs. The foundation of a high school program is created at the youth level. I had coached at Del Norte since its first season, and while I coached the kids the best I could, I felt like I could serve the high school program better by creating a feeder program. THE SPORT OF LACROSSE IS GAINING POPULARITY WITHIN THE 4S RANCH COMMUNITY. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THIS SPORT IS BECOMING SO PREVALENT? Lacrosse is booming nationwide, and in particular, the West Coast. It’s fast-paced, physical, easy to follow; once you watch a game under the lights at Del Norte, you will be hooked. 4S Ranch is an ideal community for this sport where heart and effort are everything; you don’t need to be six feet tall or weigh 250 pounds, the sport of lacrosse is more about heart and hustle than any other sport I know of. It’s a reflection of the community. My players and their parents are our biggest advocates,

they want us to be successful and their enthusiasm is contagious. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL BACKGROUND WITH LACROSSE? I grew up in a hotbed of lacrosse, in a small town called Setauket, on the North Shore of Long Island. My high school, Ward Melville, and in particular our lacrosse team, was my town’s claim to fame. Ward Melville is consistently nationally ranked and always in the hunt for County/Long Island/State Championships (this past spring, Ward Melville was the consensus #1 ranked high school team in America). Lacrosse was all we did year round, we were a very blue collar, lunch pail and hardhat type of community; we were tough, so the sport was natural for all of us. I was able to have a successful high school career and take my game to the collegiate ranks – first to West Point for two seasons before transferring up to Syracuse University. I met my wife at Syracuse. I cherish the friendships I have made from this sport; it has literally made me who I am today.

52 • 92127Magazine.com • January | February 2014

WHAT IS THE BEST AGE, IN YOUR OPINION, TO BEGIN CHILDREN IN LACROSSE? I would say the earlier the better, ideally around six to eight years old. At that age the stick is no longer taller than you, for most kids at least. Lacrosse requires a great amount of hand-eye coordination. Your first few years should be spent on the fundamentals, as the older you get the more physical the game gets, so if you have sound fundamentals, it frees you up to be more aware of other aspects of the game. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE TEAM BREAKDOWN AND HOW TEAMS ARE FORMED. Last year we had three teams, two 7th and 8th grade teams and one 5th and 6th grade team. We want kids of similar age to play against one another, then as we grow we will build teams based on player performance as well, to place kids at the appropriate skill level. The more established programs in the area have multiple teams at each age/grade level, and allow the kids to be placed on the appropriate team based on experience and skill-level, that is what we are working towards.

WHERE AND WHEN ARE GAMES PLAYED? This year our home is Oak Valley Middle School, which is where we will be running most of our games and practices. We have a governing body for youth lacrosse here in San Diego that creates our schedule. Last year our games were played on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for the most part.

to outwork our competition, quitting was never an option, and we did it all while keeping our mouths shut. I want my players to excel in the classroom, to be shining examples in the community, and to succeed with a sense of humility. Winning lacrosse games is great, but I want players who will succeed in all aspects of life, not just on the playing field.

WHAT IS THE TRADITIONAL LACROSSE SEASON FOR 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE? Tradition is a funny word, as we are only entering year number two. This year we are starting the beginning of February, and our season will roll thru to the end of May. Lacrosse is a spring sport, but many of our boys do off-season conditioning or play on club teams year-round, they are fully committed to being successful.

ARE THERE ANY CHANGES THIS SEASON THAT PLAYERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF? Yes, we set the bar pretty high last year in our inaugural season, all of our teams exceeded everyone’s expectations except my own. This year, I expect us to be even better. Our teams will be more competitive, our practices will be harder, the players will be expected to perform at a higher level.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE AS A WHOLE? My primary goal is to share the experiences I had growing up on Long Island. We were held accountable at a young age, we were expected

PLEASE ELABORATE ON THE DIVISIONS OFFERED BY 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE. Right now we play in the San Diego County Lacrosse Association (SDCLA), and we field teams at the 5th and 6th grade level as well as the 7th and 8th grade level. In the near future

we are hoping to field more teams, and we will need more coaches, which are hard to come by out here in San Diego. If any parents reading this are interested in helping, please let me know! WHAT DO THE LEAGUE REGISTRATION FEES COVER? Registration fees cover SDCLA fees, officials, insurance, coaching stipends, uniforms, field rentals, field maintenance, supplies like scorebooks and balls. The list goes on and on. WHAT TEAM(S) DOES 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE FEED? Most of our players will attend Del Norte High School. Both the boys and girls programs at Del Norte have been on the rise; I am only hoping to improve their teams as best I can. HOW DOES A BUSINESS OR FAMILY BECOME A SPONSOR? Community is everything. I would encourage all local businesses to reach out and get involved. Lacrosse is considered ‘the fastest game on two feet’ – come watch a game and you will see why. While my focus now is on the youth program, I am still close with

the coaches and administration at Del Norte, support is welcome at all levels. HOW DOES 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE RUN SUCH AN ORGANIZED PROGRAM? I try and run the program the same way my youth program on Long Island was run. We have incredible parent volunteers who help me keep my sanity, and a supportive community that wants to see this program become something special. WHO ARE THE CURRENT 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE SPONSORS? As of now we do not have official sponsors, although after last season, some local businesses have reached out about sponsorship. DOES 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE HOLD ANY FUNDRAISERS? Our parents put on some fundraisers in the spring – stay tuned. We also help support the Del Norte fundraisers where our players and parents take active roles in fundraising. HOW COULD A COMMUNITY MEMBER VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO HELP 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE? Email me. We are never short on volunteers, the more the merrier!

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THAT 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE FACES? Quality coaches and field space. I am fortunate that my nine-to-five job allows me to coach in the afternoons a few times a week, but not everyone is as lucky. We do not have fields with lights that we can utilize at night which is tough, and there are guys who want to coach but cannot make it work around their work schedules. As we grow, we will attract more attention in the community and in San Diego, so hopefully these pain points will be short lived. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE DIRECTOR? I create the curriculum, oversee the logisitics of the program as a whole as well as at the team level. I like to think I help set the tempo of the program, and instill in the kids that it’s not about winning or losing at this point, it’s more about effort, hard work, having fun, and most importantly, striving to get better everyday. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING THING OF BEING 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE DIRECTOR? Honestly, seeing the kids fall in love with the sport is incredibly fulfilling. I am not an easy on my players, I push them incredibly hard, but they do not buckle, they meet every challenge head-on. After all of that, they want more, they want to improve, they want to get better. When

a kid finishes a tough practice, then comes up and asks what could they do to improve, that is the best feeling a coach could have. PLEASE PROVIDE US WITH 4S RANCH BOYS LACROSSE OPENING DAY INFORMATION IF APPLICABLE. Season opens on Feb. 1, 2014. Fields and times are still TBD; please email me with any questions. 

:::: HEALTHY LIVING

NEW YEAR

RESOLUTION:\give up my

ALLERGIES

F

or most people who have lived with allergies their entire life, it is difficult to believe that they could simply get rid of them. However, according to Dr Kusum Sharma who is board certified in Allergy and Immunology, this is actually possible. According to her, when someone is allergic to something, they have the following three options: 1. They could avoid what they are allergic to. This prevents an allergic reaction from happening. This approach is commonly used for drug and food allergies. Since other effective drugs are available, doctors simply avoid the drug a person is allergic to. People allergic to certain foods avoid those particular foods. People with cat or dog allergies can try to avoid exposure to them. However it becomes difficult with other environmental allergens like pollens and dust mites that are found everywhere. 2. They could take medications to suppress the effects of the allergic reaction. For seasonal allergies and asthma, most people take this approach. They take over the counter allergy medications or prescription medications given by their doctor. Often the symptoms are not completely

controlled and people learn to live with their allergies. Also, this entails taking medications daily for prolonged periods of time. 3. They could “give up” their allergies by being de-sensitized to the particular allergens. This third option allows an allergic person to decrease their sensitivity to allergy causing substances, so that exposure to the offending allergen (pollen, mold, dust mites, animal dander, stinging insects, foods like milk and egg, drugs, etc.) will result in fewer/less severe or no symptoms. Desensitization is commonly done for medications like aspirin, penicillin and other drugs when the particular drug will be of benefit and no substitutes are available. Recently, desensitization to egg and milk has been possible in many cases. Venom immunotherapy allows for desensitization to bee, wasp and hornet venoms. “Allergy shots” or immunotherapy is a similar approach that desensitizes to seasonal allergens. This approach works in 8590% of allergic patients. It typically takes about 6-8 months of weekly injections to achieve the final or maintenance dose. This seems to discourage many people. However, Dr Sharma has devised what she

calls “Cluster Immunotherapy- AKANE protocol” so she can get the same results by giving fewer injections over a significantly shorter duration, typically 2-3 months. Once the maintenance dose is reached, it is continued once a month for 3-5 yrs. “Results are astounding” says Dr Sharma, “I see sneezing, dripping, stuffiness and even snoring disappear.” She is very excited about all the new research in this area. Sublingual immunotherapy or allergy drops delivered in the mouth instead of the allergy injections are now being reviewed by the FDA. For people with just grass allergy, a grass tablet is being formulated to take just before grass season. If you suffered from allergies last year, this is your time to take action. Start this year with a new goal. Find out what causes your allergies, and which of the above three approaches is best for you. 

I would highly recommend this dentist office. The dentist and staff are extremely kind and compassionate. I have dental fear and everyone was so helpful and kind. My tooth is fixed, and the pain is gone I am happy to say I have a new dentist.” ~Patient of Dr. Davey

T

he morning of Thanksgiving Day, 4S Ranch residents gathered at 4S Ranch Community Park for the 4th Annual Thank You Run. There were over 1,000 participants, all helping to raise money for local charities such as Helen’s Closet and the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation. Helen’s Closet provides comfort equipment to terminally ill ALS patients, and the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation supports local schools and the surrounding community. The total funds raised this year was over $20,000. After all the hard work, and the medals were awarded, the post race festival featured fun for the entire family. There was a Karl Strauss beer garden and an Equinox laser tag arena. Everyone certainly worked up an appetite for the Thanksgiving dinners to be had that night. ¢

Sponsored by Shay Realtors, Oakwood Escrow, and many more. For a full list visit: www.thankyourun.org/sponsors.

Every Thank You Run racer received a sport shirt printed by Viva Merchandise, an affiliate of 92127 Magazine and ZCode Media. For more information on merchandise printing or to receive a quote for shirts or apparel, visit them at www.vivamerch.com.

Better than 20/20 EyeLux Optometry Delivers

Stellar Patient Care and New Technology

E

yeLux Optometry is the merger of two established practices into a single state-of-the-art facility. Annual eye exams are an important part of wellness to detect any asymptomatic eye disease, and that’s their expertise. An exam at EyeLux Optometry confirms that vision is optimal for work, school and recreation. They feature the largest selection of eyewear in a twenty mile area, selected from around the world for quality of construction, aesthetic design, and strength of design, tailored to the local demographic. On Yelp.com, Eyelux Optometry is the most highly rated and reviewed business in 92127. This reflects EyeLux Optometry’s mission: to bring compelling value, and “to treat our clientele the same way we’d want to be treated ourselves.” Patients comment that upon walking in, they feel a happy, professional, yet unpretentious environment, where staff members greet each one as if a guest in their own home. In 2013, EyeLux Optometry was mentioned in optometric trade media more than a dozen times in articles, videos and lectures for teaching other eye care professionals how to best care for patients and implement new technology. Unbeknownst to many 92127 residents, EyeLux Optometry offers worldclass eyecare close to home. Since 2011, EyeLux Optometry has established itself as a business anchor in 4S Ranch. Although potential patients may look at the façade

and think the “lux” portion of the name connotes “luxury” and highend products, the three-letter word actually comes from the standard measure of illuminance. While they do have a selection of luxury eyewear, EyeLux Optometry prides itself on fair pricing on products and services. Commonly prescribed contact lenses like Acuvue Oasys are priced the same at EyeLux Optometry as they are at Costco. The frame and lens specialists at EyeLux Optometry are trained to educate patients on lens options that bring value without sales pressure. Doctors Nguyen, Le, and Chou have each practiced since the late ‘90s, and they oversee and collaborate with a committed staff of ten. EyeLux Optometry is known for delivering desired outcomes and bringing peace of mind to their patients, so the next time it’s time for your annual eye exam, choose the office that aspires to ‘up-serve’, not ‘up-sell.’: EyeLux Optometry. 

Real Estate Matters A Move of Our Own by SCOTT VOAK

F

or the past year, I have been working with my partner and our team to try and position ourselves for the next several years. It is of critical importance for our clients is access to international buyers. Roughly 20% of our upper end purchases in San Diego are made by international buyers. What many people do not know, is that the U.S. is unique in having a multiple listing service, and agents that sell other brokerages listings. In foreign countries, if you want to buy a home listed by Century 21, you have to go through Century 21. So, buyers from outside the United States look to individual brands – the idea of Zillow or Trulia doesn’t register to them. So, we began searching for a brand with a strong international presence to compliment our strong local marketing efforts. We also wanted a company that stood for excellence and would allow us to build out the territory with solid, experienced agents rather than bringing in a lot of new agents and hope they workout. Fortunately for us, a company such as that was looking for a team to build out their presence in inland North County. I am very happy to announce that starting in 2014, we will be joining Pacific Sotheby’s International and building multiple offices to serve the inland North County. I am extremely excited about this opportunity and look forward to putting together a team of high caliber agents that can help leverage this great brand for the benefit of our clients. Happy New Year! ¢

A NEW SCHOOL OF THOUGHT Design39Campus

At

the corner of Lone Quail Rd. and Camino Del Sur, buildings are rising from the earth. This facility is Design39Campus (D39C), Poway Unified School District’s brand new K-8 school. The Design39Campus team is working feverishly to develop a challenging academic and co-curricular program that will engage students in learning through innovative pathways. PUSD Superintendent, Dr. John Collins, and the PUSD Board of Education have tasked all schools in the District to think about the changes that need to be made in “the way we do school” to ensure all students are experiencing an engaging education. The District believes such change is needed to achieve its mission of “College and Career Readiness for All.” Since being assembled late last spring, the D39C team has been researching the best practices from around the country and the world to guide their planning and assist them in meeting this challenge.

Spurred on by their research and interactions with educational experts, thinkers, and business leaders, the D39C leadership team invited the community to engage in a discussion about the vision of this school. The D39C team held over a dozen workshops with parents from the community and other District staff members asking them questions like: “What if school were a place where...?” The input collected from these workshops have been helpful in expanding the vision of the school. D39C is a campus of optional enrollment for specific Community Facility Districts (CFD) in the surrounding area. This means that there will be a limited number of seats for qualifying CFDs. Once the opening enrollment and CFDs have been identified, information will be rolled out in the community to offer the opportunity to request enrollment at the school. For updated information visit their website www.design39campus.com and “Like” them on Facebook. 

new year brings transitions. For some of us, we attribute that to the age-old saying, “Out with the old, and in with the new!” And when we say that, we’re usually standing in front of our closets, or our kids’ closets, and wondering where we can haul off all those unused goods. Before you bag it up and take it to your nearest donation drop-off, consider that there are ways to both donate your unused or gently used clothing, and still give back to the community. How, you ask? All around San Diego, there are specialty thrift stores that directly benefit a local cause. Do you love animals? There’s a thrift shop that benefits a humane society. Want to help the American Cancer Society? There’s a shop for that too. Take a look at some thrift shops around San Diego that give back to the community, and you might even find one in your neighborhood that you never knew was there. 

Dress for Success This organization is focused on helping lowincome women in San Diego acquire jobs and build careers. hen Dr. Vanessa Jackson, DPT, opened ISIS Physical Therapy five years ago, it was to fill a need in the community for comprehensive physical therapy treatment. “We are motivated every day by the success stories of our patients and by giving them a trustworthy and caring resource when they are dealing with injuries or pain,” Dr. Pansky said. ISIS specializes in treating orthopedic problems, such as lower back and mid-back pain, knee and ankle pain, shoulder rehab, and neck & TMJ issues (jaw pain). ISIS successfully treats sport injuries, too. Athletes from baseball, softball, track and field, soccer, volleyball, football and many other sports have all returned to the field healthier. ISIS also offers Fit at The Tee, a golfspecific treatment and training program that helps improve golfers of all skill levels; www.fitatthetee.com. ISIS patients receive a 90- to 120-minute initial visit. “Every session thereafter is 60 to 90 minutes. We treat patients as individuals with unique needs. We also take pride in finding the root cause of each patient’s problem so that the pain being experienced goes away and stays away,” Dr. Jackson said. Individualized care and innovative solutions are paramount at ISIS, where the commitment is to using hands-on techniques and the newest research-supported equipment to help patients feel better as soon as possible. “From your first visit on, you will know exactly what is going on with

:::: nighthawk insider by JACKIE WIBOWO special to 92127 Magazine

Spreading the Joy

I

am a lover of the holidays – the jovial cheer, the hot chocolate by the fireplace, and the time to spend with loved ones. I’ll be honest, even at seventeen-and-a-half years of age, I still get excited when the Christmas tree goes up and presents start “magically” appearing under it. But what I love most is how friends, family, and even communities come together during this season. On Thanksgiving Day, I woke up at 5:30 a.m. – earlier than I ever have – to volunteer at the Thanksgiving Thank You Run. The run supports Helen’s Closet, which provides comfort to terminally ill Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients as well as the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation. When I pulled up to the front of the Boys & Girls Club, still in my sweats and barely awake, I didn’t

quite expect what seemed like a hundred volunteers to be there already. Upon this sight, I was reminded of how lucky I am to live in a community like 4S Ranch. We’re fortunate enough to live in a safe community that has plenty to offer – whether it be public parks, the library, the nearby shopping center, or even outdoor movies. At the same time, we aren’t blindsided by how good we have it. The 1,000 people who showed up at the run are quite the testament of that. In the same way, Nighthawks do it all. Yes, we have the highest API score in the district. Yes, more and more Valley League championship flags continue to fill our gym. But more importantly, we look beyond ourselves. We examine what is going around us and immediately look towards how we can help. Just a few months ago the UNICEF club led the Trick or Treat for UNICEF effort, where students spent their Halloweens not

collecting candy, but instead going door to door asking for donations to feed those in need. When asked to help support the Philippines by donating canned goods, our student body responded by pooling together over 1,000 pounds of food. Our very own choir went downtown to spread the season’s joy through Christmas carols. At least once a month ASB broadcasts a cause-related video in our homerooms, inviting Nighthawks to take action. And we always do. Our next cause is Adopt-a-Family. With donations, we support Nighthawk families who are struggling this season. As Principal Mizel said,“It’s about giving more than receiving, and I hope you’ll join us in taking care of the Flock.” As always, we are taking care of our own, Nighthawk to Nighthawk. ¢ Jacqueline Wibowo is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine and can be contacted at info@92127magazine.com.

Easy as 1, 2, 3 Mathnasium of 4S Ranch Gets Kids Excited About Math by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Tyler McElhaney

T

he sign in the window of Mathnasium reads, “Warning: Your Child Could Become Crazy About Math,” and if that is indeed the case, then Karen Lossing has achieved her goal. “We aim to significantly increase a child’s math skills, understanding of math concepts and overall school performance. We build confidence and forge a positive attitude toward the subject. We want our students to be crazy about math,” exclaimed Lossing, owner of Mathnasium of 4S Ranch. Mathnasium provides support and enrichment for students in grades two through twelve, giving children the ability to make sense of math in order to catch up, keep up or get ahead in the subject. Mathnasium of 4S Ranch focuses exclusively on math and employs math specialists to facilitate customized learning plans that allow students to move along their own “math path.” Mathnasium also encourages students to discuss their strategies or struggles in the process of learning so that they fully understand not just what they are doing, but why they are doing it. “Our curriculum fits the child rather than the specific grade level, so we meet them where they are and move them forward. Our proprietary curriculum is consistent with the Common Core standards being taught in California, but we reach outside of the grade level when appropriate to re-teach or challenge based on the

needs of the individual student,” explained Lossing. She is quick to point out that while Mathnasium does not send home additional homework, they welcome students to bring in any schoolwork with which they may need assistance. The Mathnasium Method has been helping children in math for over thirty years, with 400 locations across the nation. The 4S Ranch location recently opened, and Lossing is thrilled to see that she and her expert staff have already made a huge difference in the lives of local children. “Our greatest successes so far have been watching the children’s excitement over their progress,” revealed Lossing. Lossing encourages all those who are interested in learning more about Mathnasium to come to Family Math Night for grades two through five on Monday, Jan. 20 from 6 p.m. – 7:30, and call to register as space is limited. You can stop by anytime during Mathnasium’s business hours. “Currently, we are waiving the $50 registration fee, and anyone who prepays for twelve months of membership receives free registration, free assessment and a free thirteenth month,” stated Karen. For more information please visit www.mathnasium.com/4SRanch. 
