! Forming a critical mass in the region is the Grenada Contemporary Exhibit. In its first expression, in 2014, the exhibit was visited by one of the most important curators in the region, Jose Manual Noceda from Cuba. His attendance put Grenadian artists who participated into an official register of Caribbean artists and helped give a footing for future exposure. In 2015, more artists exhibited and the curatorial theme of how technology has affected society resonated especially with a younger audience. In a few short years and coupled with international exposure of Grenada’s artists, the Grenada Contemporary Exhibit is gaining momentum as one of the region’s premier contemporary art exhibits.

The curatorial theme for the 3rd expression of the Grenada Contemporary Exhibit is “The Bridge”. An open call was sent out world wide for artists to think beyond the physical representations of a bridge into a more conceptual realm. In particular, the concept of “the bridge” is relevant in translating the local to the global and the metaphorical bridges that are necessary to make those connections. With 17 artist from 9 countries, this exhibit is Grenada’s most internationally diverse contemporary art exhibition to date.

Grenada is leaping chasms and building bridges, solidifying its position as a stronghold of contemporary art in the region. In preparations for its second appearance with a National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Grenada is showing that it has the staying power to continue making an impression on the international contemporary art scene. In the region, Cuba is the only other country to appear in two consecutive Biennales. The proverbial gates have been opened and the artists of Grenada have unprecedented access to the eyes, minds and hearts of the world.

Oliver Benoit Grenada Video My art is driven by the desire to understand the conflicting identities I have experienced in Grenada and the complexities of my life that is shaped by it. Those complexities sometimes appear simple thus evading all forms of critical discourse about my experience growing up in Grenada, and that lived abroad— an experience that increased my curiosity about Grenada’s national identity, but also realising that the problems of the world’s people is a struggle over identity and dignity. The video presented is an ongoing series, using the bricks of the colonial buildings in St. George’s as a metaphor for individuals.

The concept of "The Bridge" feels very close to home for me. My interest in duality is aligned with how I think about this concept, grappling with the feeling that I am at once on both sides of the bridge. I am of mixed races (Puerto Rican and Irish), I am an adult that still feels very much like a child, I am an American who feels in many ways now much more connected to Grenada having lived there for 2 years.

The painting "On Identity and Possible Selves" tackles the concept of The Bridge by illustrating our relationship to the many roles and identities we take on in our lives and our constant ambition to reinvent ourselves. These identities can change from place to place, throughout the different chapters of our lives and in accordance to our relationships with different people. Although these roles we play can at times be in conflict, they are all part of us, they are all connected.

Call it what you want! A dream, a task, a solution or just an idea. My sculptures reflect my belief in imagination. All my work was always a mirror of my truth or the worlds truth. Using my own symbolism, with my sculpture 'The Bridge' I try to show the invisible connection or attempt of connection which can or should happen between the human being and the society. The language and symbolism are carried by the inexhaustible beauty of the human body and the deep sadness of incomprehension. With fiberglass as my medium I try to depict the light but also the rough side of reality. A reality that is not always easy and often as unrealistic develop. Sometimes they are just borrowed dreams.

It started with a vision. A vision to give the Sailing Youth in Grenada the opportunity to race on a fast and sexy looking boat-- to cllose the gap from racing small optis to bigger boats. To race in a team compared to single-handed. To build bridges between people, you can only succeed as a team.

The vision and idea was sent out through social media and it was picked up in the UK by Hugh Pringle. He liked the project and invested in the building of the boat. He comes to Grenada to race the boat together with crew from all around the world. Bridges are built. Grenada Teamsailing

Khaled Hafez Egypt Video
"In his paintings Egyptian artist Khaled Hafez pastes contemporary commercial imagery on a painterly stage to heighten the quarrel of abstraction versus figuration. This fight continues to be a deeply problematic topic within Islam, where imagery is largely prohibited in the visual arts. Hafez uses figures such as Batman or Catwoman to evoke the ancient gods of Egypt and Greece, demonstrating the persistence of certain cultural archetypes through today. Specifically, Hafez ruminates on the position of painting within Pharonic culture--with its serial imagery, “superhero” figures and clear moral narratives--as a precursor to today’s comics. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs were “film strips” reporting the tales of the nation’s aristocracy. Khaled Hafez is born in Cairo, Egypt in 1963 where he currently lives and works. He studied medicine and followed the evening classes of the Cairo School of Fine Arts (Faculty of Fine Arts) in the eighties. After attaining a medical degree in 1987 and M.Sc.

as a medical specialist in 1992, he gave up medical practices in the early nineties for a career in the arts. He later obtained an MFA in new media and digital arts from Transart Institute (New York, USA) and Danube University Krems (Austria). Hafez practice spans the mediums of painting, film / video, photography, installation and interdisciplinary approaches. Marta Jourdan trained in drama and cinema, completing her studies at École Jacques Le Coq, in Paris, where she developed techiniques for constructing stage props. During this period she worked in the archive of the Centre Pompidou. Her work is shown in many languages. Since, 2006 she has been developing a series of kinetic sculptures. Apart from sculptures, she also produces drawings, photographs and vídeos. Manfred Kielnhofer Austria Sculpture Manfred "KILI" Kielnhofer is an Austrian painter, sculptor and photographer. Kielnhofer studied at the technical College Linz where he took his final exam in 1995. He was engaged with technique and design and art on building lead him to his special way of art. Since 2000 he lives as a freelance artist in Linz. 2005 he launched Gallery Artpark in Linz.

Kielnhofer's most famous work is, "Guardians of Time“. Drawing on religious and supernatural phenomena, the Guardians of Time are stone statues that are cloaked in hooded robes and situated to seem like they are moving forth in some kind of ritual. In some cases the figures stand alone; in other instances, they are grouped together as if whispering to each other. Kielnhofer places his statues in public places like ancient castles, old mines, plazas, and parks. They are installed and moved without fanfare, heightening the eerie, mystic aura they give off. The first of these mysterious figures was created in 2006. Since then, Kielnhofer continues to create and install these statues all over the world.

Grenada Video Derek Walcott “The Sea is History”
Mains has been working with material exploration for art making involving materials that can be sourced entirely within Grenada, reducing the dependence on the importing of cost-restrictive art media. Further, Mains asserts that our place, or landscape contributes to our identity and by using objects and materials within our locality we our referencing our identity. By recognizing materials that we have a relationship with the viewer can have an empathic relationship with a piece based on what an object or material can tell us about ourselves. In this way, Mains engages in a process of materiality that is empathic and mnemonic. The video presented features the poetry of Derek Walcott and is another iteration of Caribbean identity and locality.

Susan Mains Grenada Performance “Hiraeth” Collaboration with Xochitl Vinaja Photography

As an educator by training, one of the essential skills learned is to take students from what they already to know to that which they don’t know. Xochitl performs this slow, yoga like performance to create a bridge of understanding--a connection. The amniastic memory of the cells of the body’s kineses, the emotionally charged, lithe body performing a hypnotic rhythm, the silence where music could have been, creates a longing for a place we have not been and do not know. Hiraeth. This has a universal appeal that communicates in ways that words can’t. (The design carved into her hair mimics the tension wires of an actual bridge.) Xochi says, “So many bridges in it already: stillness-movement, east-west, business-party, hair-no hair, art-life... it's a living duality bridged by my biology.”

Video A Balancing Act (2016)
In A Balancing Act, the act of living between cultures is performed. Holding the shell of a sea urchin in one hand and a pine cone in another, the body’s subtle shifts through time take on a larger role, pointing to the constant effort that migrants face. Offered to the camera, the viewer becomes implicit. Is the viewer to choose? Does the viewer wait? How do we all participate in reinforcing each other’s identities? While each region has complex colonial histories, many Caribbean people migrated to Canada for opportunity, while the Caribbean is frequently perceived as paradise from abroad. Painted silver and gold, both the sea urchin and the pine cone have been idealized and denaturalized. I typically represent females in my work, and my current body of work titled, Contact: explorations through mixed media blueprints, is no exception. I am influenced by other artists, the environment, and details big and small in my everyday life. Traveling to, and living in a new place (Grenada) has been an exploration of the intersectionalities between race, gender, sex, economics, violence, geopolitics, geography, and technology, and therefore inspired me to create and explore art in ways I have never done before. Through sharing my art, I am building a bridge of understanding for my place in the world and making connections--making contact. It brings me joy to find that people appreciate my art for its aesthetic, but more importantly for its ability to connect to them on an emotional level. Human experiences may always be different, but the connections that are made through contact with one another is a form of art. I have done various handicrafts, like glass fusing, pottery, jewelry making and crocheting most of my life. I have exhibited a few times at the Grenada Arts Council and at the True Blue Christmas Bazaar. Helping out in Susan Main's gallery gave me access to art, artists and buyers and gave me a better understanding of art. Hot Air --Installation of Hair Drier on a Pedestal “It would be fantastic to have people outside Grenada supporting Grenada's art. So far I have met many people - artists, galleries, private people - who love the art and potential they see and promise to help and promote artists. But nothing happens.... all hot air... Same applies to artists. Everybody wants to be famous and make a lot of money. But being an artist is hard-work, like in any other job, you have to practice and work, improve your skills. How can someone be represented in other countries if there is no body of work to be shown? Oh I have a lot of work - I hear - like how many pieces, I ask? Can I see your work? I am getting 'Hot Air' answers....

To build bridges between countries with 'hot air' only is very difficult, almost impossible.�

Suelin Low Chew Tung Grenada Trinidad Mixed Media Suelin is an artist, writer and imagineer of the human Grenadian landscape. Her largest body of work explores fragmented religious and sociocultural traditions of disparate peoples transplanted from their ancestral homelands to this island environment. “Everywhere I travel, I encounter connectivity to Grenada. With this work, my intent is to cement my rootedness by presenting a world map centred on Grenada on which I will project my encountered connectivity between Grenada and the world - journal sketches, paintings, abstracts from my papers, photos and miscellaneous elements from my travels. Born in Trinidad, I first visited Grenada at 6 months of age, and moved here over 25 years ago. A not so recent transplant, I do feel that my navel-string (umbilicus) is strongly rooted here.”

Born in 1974 to an English father and Guyanese mother, Taylor grew up in Europe and Asia, where he spent much of his early childhood exploring the coral reefs of Malaysia. Educated in the South East of England, Taylor graduated from the London Institute of Arts in 1998 with a BA Honours in Sculpture and went on to become a fully qualified diving instructor and underwater naturalist. While living in Grenada, he installed the first underwater sculpture park in Grenada.
