Sassoon SS17 collection With architecture as a key inspiration, Vidal Sassoon believed the most memorable designs were distinct and true to form. Inspired by the modern movement in architecture, Sassoon celebrates the revival of Brutalism with a series of memorable hair designs, in this season’s latest SS17 collection, URBANE.

Beautifully blonde Blonde hair is classic. “Nourishment is essential to keep colour vibrant. Use a shampoo and conditioner such as Sassoon Professional Illuminating Clean and Condition to lock in colour for longer and leave hair with glossy mirror-like shine,” says Edward Darley UK Colour Director. A deep side-parting works best on hair with very gentle, natural movement and adds drama to the look. Like all great designs these shapes are perfectly balanced with the colour to create a chic and stylish approach to your new season look.

Dear Readers Isn’t it lovely to see the snowdrops and crocuses appear indicating the start of spring 2017? In our lovely spring titles we have some fabulous fashion for the men when they step out on that special occasion – whether that is to a wedding, a regatta or the black tie dates on the Henley Festival. Talking of the festival, we have interviewed the CEO, Charlotte Geeves, in this issue which makes for an interesting read. We also have lots of lovely things for the ladies including Mothers’ Day, fashion including what to wear in the gym and, just as important, what to wear when we’re out of the gym, i.e. clothes, shoes and handbags. Sometimes there are a few late developers who haven’t got their holidays booked for the summer or winter months, so we have a fantastic selection of idea boosters to help them decide what’s on the 2017 plan next – ideas from cycling holidays to simply relaxing. Maybe holidays need to be discussed over a lovely meal or during a weekend away, we can help with that too with our suggestions from short break holidays to fabulous restaurants where the food experience takes your palate to another level. And if that wasn’t enough, we have the obligatory Easter connection with chocolate and an article on how Easter is celebrated around the world. Enjoy the selection we have put together for you. From all at Team RJ

The bob is timeless and this season, less is more. Drawing parallels between the pure, clean lines of Brutalist architecture with the geometric structure of a Sassoon cut, this new pared-down aesthetic makes hair look chic and polished. Edward continues, “shine is key for brunettes – instantly making the hair look thicker and healthier”. A weekly intensive treatment such as Sassoon Professional Intense Restore will ensure your hair looks healthy every day.

Vidal Sassoon believed that just as perfectly designed architecture enhances a city, so the perfect haircut and colour enhances and beautifies a face. “I always blend a bespoke combination of tones together to create a perfect shade that’s true to my client’s needs and personality,” says Edward. For a gamine look, add a small amount of Sassoon Professional Texture Refine evenly throughout your hair and mould into the desired shape.

ow entering its seventh year, the 2017 edition is set to be the biggest ever with hundreds of baristas, roasters, chefs and coffee aficionados descending on London for the four-day event. Following the success of last year’s exhibition, which attracted over 30,000 visitors, this year’s Festival will see the return of the famed Coffee Masters competition where the world’s top baristas compete for the prestigious title of Coffee Master and a £5,000 cheque. Latte Art live will showcase incredible milk-based artistry; whilst The White Label Kitchen will ensure visitors can feast on the finest of the capital’s top food concepts. A wonderful variety of delicious street foods will be on offer to cater for discerning coffee lovers and foodies alike. What’s more, all visitors will be welcomed and encouraged to taste and drink coffee to their heart’s content courtesy of the best roasters in Britain. This all follows an opening night Espresso Martini party featuring a live DJ set from legendary London DJ, Norman Jay MBE. Jeffrey Young, CEO & Founder of Allegra Group, says: “After nearly a decade of growth in the London specialty coffee scene, it is exciting to see the continued flurry of innovation and, of course, so many new artisan coffee shop openings throughout London and the rest of the UK each year. London is now recognised as a true centre of excellence for the high quality, craft coffee industry and why The London Coffee Festival attracts thousands of trade visitors and ‘coffee tourists’ from all over the world.” Tickets will be available online from £16.50 for adults and £4.50 for children, with strictly limited availability. Each day, there is a brunch, lunch, teatime and VIP full day session. To purchase or for more information, please visit www.londoncoffeefestival.com

Two recommendations of what not to miss at this year’s festival include: Coffee Masters: 20 contenders, 7 disciplines, 1 winner Visitors will be treated to a spectacular display of dazzling skills as 16 world class baristas face off for the prestigious crown of Coffee Master and £5,000 cash prize. The competition runs over four days and its disciplines include: Latte Art Challenge (testing a barista’s mastery of milk), The Origin (identifying origins of coffee beans and placing them on a world map), The Order (turning around a 10 drinks order in 9 minutes!) and more. Visitors of LCF will also be able to join the fun with Coffee Masters Workshops.

ot great news for the average lady who carries everything bar the kitchen sink around with her on a daily basis, often using only half her bag contents throughout the day, yet can’t shake the comfort of having her belongings to hand. That said, with sunny spring round the corner, hopefully the need for a brolly, gloves and an extra layer are not needed, so in fact, as long as there’s space for a lip gloss, mobile, money and a mirror, the on-trend micro bags should do just nicely. Last year’s catwalks hinted at the spring mini-trend to come. Leading brands such as Valentino with their lipstick ‘bag’ – literally big enough for your lippy, Hermès bijous bags hanging from models’ wrists and Louis Vuitton’s luxurious Petite Malle I-phone case posing as a bag, started to pave the way. You can’t go wrong with clutches such as Valentino’s Love Blade box clutch – perfect for added fun to glam up your daytime look, or the Row Bag for night-time chic. Spring conjures up images of fun days ahead, walks in the countryside with warmer weather to make us smile; flowers say spring. Whether the weather is being good or not, the Fendi Dotcom flower-appliqué leather bag brings sunshine to any occasion, as do the Multi Motif Clutch and Orange Slice clutches from John Lewis. Newly released is Chanel’s Gabrielle bag, taking the original Christian name of the designer. The brand’s first notable new bag model since the 2011 ‘Boy’, in a range of colours, but there is something rather nautical, hinting towards a spring cruise which I like, in the black and white two-tone purse. If, like me, you find it hard to pare down your bag contents and need more space, you also have fashionable options, stay spring-like and opt for colour. There are a host of giant gleeful and pretty portmanteaus to lug your things around, for example from Furla’s new range of eye-popping bucket bags to Acne’s spacious Rope Jungle bag in zesty yellow or ruby red, the Moroccan poufs from Balenciaga are hard to beat too. As well as colour, pop-art patterns are having a fashion moment too, so fear not when eyeing up an intricate design – it isn’t ‘too much’, it’s probably not enough. Spring is also a time for alfresco dining and nothing says this more than the new Birkin Basket by Blooming Dreamer, handmade in the Algarve. In honour of the actress Jane Birkin, who always carried her accoutrements in a little basket, straw has made a comeback. Another feature high on the list when purchasing your new bag this season are handles – the more of a statement, the better. We are talking gold ones, circular, studded and fabric, whatever the material they need to stand out. Givenchy, with everything from chain to tortoise shell pattern, have elevated this style perfectly, so look to them for inspiration, or indeed a purchase. Whatever fad you favour, normally your gut instinct will lead the way. Only you know what you can pull off, or what you feel comfortable wearing, but remember a bag is more than a necessity, it’s your most fashionable friend.

Lucy L Choi London

ucy Choi launched her brand in 2012, pioneering the next generation of luxury footwear. She has combined her unique heritage, set of fashion credentials, and design expertise in order to establish an innovative shoe label that is at the same time extremely chic, comfortable and affordable. With her uncle Jimmy as an influential role model, Lucy learned early on the importance of character, comfort & craftsmanship, which was to become the founding ethos of her brand. The brand’s signature is epitomised by a “Rock & Royal” theme inspired by the two Kates: the edgy and iconic Kate Moss and the elegant and classic Kate Middleton. Lucy’s personality and own style is very much a reflection of her brand, which champions creativity and character rather than being specifically trend-led. Some shoes express a sense of “Rock”, some “Royal”, and others a striking combination of the two. Lucy’s vision is to offer customers wearable, comfortable shoes, at an accessible price point, all of which have that all-important wow-factor. From the beginning, Lucy’s collections have focused on sleek and wearable classics with a twist. Her diverse collections come in an array of colour combinations and toe shapes, with mid and high heels, boots, wedges, sandals and flats for all occasions, from the red carpet to chilling out on the beach in St Tropez. Finishes include luxurious leathers, soft suede, satins, hand-dyed silks, embellishments and vintage lace, which are all sourced and made by Lucy’s trusted suppliers and contacts across Europe and Asia. The shoes have an average price of £195.00 to £245.00. Lucy Choi London is a forward thinking brand that meets the exact demands of the sophisticated modern woman and reflects the way she shops. The aesthetic appeals to a savvy generation of women; women who look for quality and luxury, but at the best possible price point. Lucy designs every shoe in the Lucy Choi London collection to be unique and playful, to reflect the many different personalities and tastes of these women. The different generations of Lucy Choi London customers are reflected in Lucy Choi London’s celebrity ambassadors, with the shoes being worn by celebrities including, Mollie King, Daisy Lowe, Kelly Brook, Jodie Kidd, Cheryl, Darcey Bussell, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. Lucy Choi London has recently been featured in publications including Vogue, Tatler, Brides, Hello!, Grazia, Marie Claire, Stella Magazine, ELLE, The Times, Financial Times How To Spend It, Good Housekeeping, You & Your Wedding, Wedding & many more. Lucy Choi London’s UK stockists include Net-A-Porter, matchesfashion.com, Harvey Nichols nationwide, Fenwick of Bond Street, Wolf & Badger of Dover Street, Arnotts in Dublin, Anna Boutique, Question-Air Boutique and over 80 further high end boutiques across the UK. The collection is sold internationally at Harvey Nichols Dubai and Hong Kong, Saks Fifth Avenue Dubai, and boutiques in Dublin, Italy, Belgium, Singapore and the Middle East. The full collection is available to purchase from the Lucy Choi London flagship store on Connaught Street, W2 2AF, and from the website www.lucychoilondon.com.

Top Ten Short Breaks in the UK to tempt you… As someone who travels the globe extensively for work and for pleasure, I am never sad to come home to England. The United Kingdom has so much to indulge in, from eye-wateringly stunning natural scenery, fast paced activities on land and sea, eclectic shopping, to top-notch multicultural award winning dining. Here are a few suggestions of where to go to enjoy all the unique highlights of the United Kingdom…

Lake District

Can’t beat Cornwall My Cornwall memories include swimming in crystal clear waters, exploring the dinky towns dotted with World Heritage Sites and medieval harbours on foot, stopping off at a hillside restaurant for a steaming bowl of Moules Marinière and going on endless cliff-top walks soaking up the stunning scenery. It is the perfect place for solitude, a romantic break or a fun filled family jaunt. Water activities are abundant too.

Norfolk, from castles to coastal villages All year round, Norfolk has something to offer. During warmer days you can take a stroll through the 90 plus miles of unspoilt coastline and charming countryside, or visit Broads National Park and globally renowned nature reserves. Birdwatchers can indulge in the UK capital of bird watching, and seaside lovers will find refuge in Great Yarmouth. For colder days, the city of Norwich offers countless shops, a family themed park and Norwich Castle to explore.

Brighton is bursting with attractions Whether you like to seek out quirky clothes, artwork or find a steal with a bargain antique, the famed Lanes has it covered. Brighton is known for its ethical and organic cafés and restaurants and seasonal seafood offerings, for those with a sweet tooth Choccywoccydoodah is an edible chocolate trove selling fantastical works of art, made from the humble coco bean. Fish and chips and a walk up the arcade-fuelled pier are a must.

Bath

Devon is delightful Two magnificent coastlines, five awarded ‘Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and two National Parks, leaves Devon a haven for countryside appreciators. After an indulgent cream tea (Devon was the pioneer, dating back to the 11th century), tour the sea by boat or try your hand at kayaking, or navigate the land by bike – Potters Walk stands out.

Cosy up in the Cotswolds A conglomerate of six counties; Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Wiltshire, cumulate to make up miles to discover. Treacle hues of quintessentially English stone villages, framed by rolling hills or ‘wolds’, are pleasing to the eye, as you meander through. Interject your rambles with feasts of local cheeses, meats and beverages available in a number of gastro pubs and fine dining establishments.

Bask in the history of Bath Every age will be enamoured by the sight of the UNESCO World Heritage site Roman baths, as well as of course the remnants of the temple dedicated to Sulis Minerva. Unique in the UK in that it is the only destination where you can bathe in naturally hot spa water in Roman baths to boot. Be one of the many that flock here annually for spa treatments. Another historical place worth visiting in the vicinity is Stonehenge. Adults can peruse the countless shops, then appease the kiddies with a day out at Longleat Safari Park.

You must visit Yorkshire Both off road and on road cyclists are at home in Yorkshire, Settle Market Place is the place to pedal through, and you need to exercise if you are going to gorge on the local cuisine. For seasonal and local ingredients on the menu, head to award winning 1884 Dock Street Kitchen. See Yorkshire from the water and get aboard a boat for a trip around historical Sheffield and Tinsley Canals. If you want to take the reins and be adventurous, test your survival skills with a sojourn at The Bear Grylls Survival Academy in Dearne Valley.

Have a whale of a time in Wales Hike Snowden and camp outside to be at one with nature, abseil down the rock-faces of the ancient landscape, go raft building in warmer weather or delve into the past with a tour of the imposing Norman fortress; Caernarfon Castle. Find peace on Bardsey Island, head there by hopping on a boat from Aberdaron or Pwllheli to sail to the place where Christians have been going since the 6th century. Warm up in the winter months with a bowl of Welsh Cawl.

Cotswolds

Learn more about London Sometimes when things are so close by we neglect them knowing we can always do it tomorrow, but when does tomorrow ever come? People travel far and wide to come to Greater London; if you live nearby, share in the hype. With a host of London tours on offer, it is the best way to have a succinct overview by bus or bike. Create your own tour tailored to your personal tastes, whether it be art – London has a multitude of art galleries, or history – Natural History Museum and the V&A shining among them, so much can be done for free. Book yourself into a swish hotel and don’t forget an afternoon tea.

Cotswolds

Arguably home to the finest vistas the UK has to offer, and the backdrop that inspired the tales of noteworthy children’s author Beatrix Potter. Climb England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and descend to chomp on the Cumbrian delicacy dating back to the 16th century – a Cumberland sausage in a bap. Take out your easel and a flask of tea and paint your surroundings, unleashing your creative side following in the footsteps of Turner, Ruskin and Burne-Jones.

Villa Steele Point Surrounded by tropical rainforests and blue waters, Villa Steele Point stands tall at the very western tip of Tortola – a volcanic island in the British Virgin Islands that overlooks atolls once inhabited by famous pirates. With exceptional views of the Caribbean, Steele Point and its five, incredible suites boast large bay windows and balconies that are ideal for guests to take in their surroundings and marvel at the natural wonders that lie on their doorstep. Throughout the interior of the villa, luxury blends seamlessly with nature. Bright white spaces with modern amenities contrast beautifully with elegant stone and bathrooms that offer the option of showering outside among the tropical plants and flowers. Housekeeping services are provided at Steele Point as well as Le Collectionist’s 24-hour concierge service – Le Collectionist recommends venturing out with a local guide to the oldest rum distillery in the Caribbean that has been making rum through the same method for the past 200 years.

Villa Steele Point

Dolphin Island Venture to the South Pacific and the almost inaccessible paradise of Dolphin Island in Fiji for a truly magical break. Surrounded by sparkling sands and tropical trees, this private island allows guests to return to the wild and live like a true explorer (with a hint of incomparable luxury). Think raw wooden materials, palm trees that hang lazily over the swimming pool and thatched roof cabins with stylish Fijian patterns throughout. Explore the island during the daytime, kayak in the sea, take in the breathtaking sea views from the stylishly-lit infinity pool or bask in the sun with a good book on the islands private beach, whatever kind of holiday experience guests are hoping to have, Dolphin Island fits the bill. Le Collectionist suggests exploring the wild territory of the Bouma National Park, home to rare birds and plants; then taking a trip down lost rivers, through acres of rainforest and waterfalls, guided by Le Collectionist’s own local adventurer

Villa Galion Nestled among the mangroves at the northern coast of Columbia, Villa Galion is the ultimate hippie-style escape for culture and relaxation. The terracotta villa pays homage to Columbian culture through its brightly-coloured interiors, traditional motifs and the huge circular rooms with roofs created from woven palm trees that are typical of Columbian architecture. Guests are free to explore the lush gardens that surround the villa, stopping off at one of the private beaches or the island’s tennis courts before heading back to the villa and lazing in the pool or cooking up a storm on the barbecue. The rental of the property includes daily housekeeping, a boat driver that is available on request to transport guests from the private dock, and Le Collectionist’s 24-hour concierge service. As a local tip, Le Collectionist recommends leaving the island at sunrise to go fishing for lobsters with the local fishermen and taking in the rainbow colours of the San Bernardo National Coral Park.

ruises vary, from mini cruises exploring places like the chilly Norwegian Fjords, or perhaps the warmer climes of the Med; Fly & Cruise, meaning you can bypass the cold stops and fly directly to a hot climate; to luxury cruises. As with packing for a holiday, you need to take weather into consideration and pack accordingly. If it is a luxury cruise best get your glad rags out. Most cruise liners have a dress code on their website; it is advisable to check this in detail before embarking on suitcase filling, or call them directly – after all they are the ones with years of knowledge on their particular cruise requirements behind them. Check what facilities the boat has, if there is a swimming pool, pack costumes, sport activities and gymnasiums also need to be catered for in terms of wardrobe. Trampolining requires socks for instance. If you are lucky enough to be onboard a cruise, say to the Antarctica, ensure you have plenty of thin layers to wear beneath a big cosy coat. Waterproofs, thermals, thick socks and a hat with ear flaps would be sensible, too, as would gloves, earmuffs and a snuggly scarf. A broad scarf is best as it can be pulled over your mouth to shield the wind if bitter. Most onboard spas would give dressing gowns and slippers if high-end, but it is always nice to travel with your own comfy gown and soft slippers, to have a feeling of home. It is common to change for dinner, so bring a selection of staples that can be mixed and matched with various tops and skirts, or trousers for men as well as maybe a tux, and some slinky dresses, especially if in opulent accommodation. When it comes to hotter destinations, you may need vaccinations, whilst not clothing, it is crucial. Remember to pack sunglasses, a fan, sun cream, and a sunhat wouldn’t go amiss. To capture the fantastical sights you no doubt would be seeing, take your camera and all cables to go with it, as well as spare batteries. Packing formal clothing is essential for cruises just in case you get an invitation to the Captain’s table. As a back-up, it is good to know some ships do offer formal rentals. Whether visiting hot or cold climates, it can always be windy, so to accompany your evening attire, for ladies it is useful to have pretty cardigans and pashminas to match your outfits. A pashmina also doubles up as a blanket on a flight, so a handy addition. Most cruises give holidaymakers up to 10 hangers, so packing more is never a bad idea to keep your posh clothes looking presentable, just cheapie ones are fine as you might want to leave them behind. A jewellery roll will keep your valuables together and safer. Cruise ships can get rowdy, with late night shenanigans a given, therefore earplugs may come in use. Better still, take out those earplugs and join in the fun…

Amelie’s Follies guide to painless swimwear shopping

F

or most of us it is that time of year when we start thinking about our beach holiday and the dreaded swimwear shopping that goes with it. First of all, don’t leave it until the last minute. Even in shops where you can find swimwear all year round, their selection will be the greatest from March to May. Go swimwear shopping on a day you feel like it and with some time to spare! Maybe just after booking your holiday? How much would you spend on an outfit to attend a wedding for example (an outfit you will probably only wear a few times)? Why not think of your swimwear the same; after all you will wear it every day of your holiday, making it already a more cost efficient purchase than that wedding outfit. Take advantage of the ever-growing selection of beachwear that is out there. Most swimwear brands now also do wraps and kaftans to go with your bikini/swimsuit. It will save you a trip to another shop and you are bound to find that beach-to-bar outfit there and then. The second and probably most important rule of swimwear buying is: BUY FOR YOUR SHAPE AND COLOURING. Yes, you may have seen a beautiful suit in a magazine, but would it work for your shape and size? It’s good to go shopping with an idea, but it is better to keep an open mind. Trust your sales assistant. Whilst she may not personally know you, she knows her job and more importantly she will know her stock. It will make for a more painless shopping experience and save you having to try an entire shop floor before you find that special piece. Now, you are shopping for something you will wear in bright sunshine and whilst you are having fun and relaxing, so try and think colour! Black can be draining on paler skin tones; but also, will only accentuate your fair skin. Whereas bright punchy colours will lift you and give your skin tone a healthier golden hue. When it comes to bikini versus swimsuit, there are no rules. Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable, not forgetting what you will be doing in them. Swimsuits are still best suited to water sports as they minimize exposure and protect your skin against the sun and harsh surfaces. If you have little ones, maybe avoid strapless styles as they are easily pulled down by small hands. If you favour tinted suntan lotion, stay away from white or pale coloured swimwear as they will stain and get ruined. If you can’t decide between plain coloured or prints, remember that prints tend to camouflage lumps and bumps better than a plain colour, with some of the more expensive suits featuring placed prints (prints designed and placed in a way that will make your waist appear smaller, or your legs longer). If you are pregnant, tell us. You should not be wearing shapewear swimwear, and we will take into account how far along you are to accommodate your bigger heavier bust, and allow for room to grow into. At Amelie’s Follies, we make your swimwear shopping a personal shopping experience. We will do the running around, and even though we may push you outside of your comfort zone sometimes, we will endeavour to only make you try styles we are confident will suit your size, shape and lifestyle. And most of all make it so you don’t dread swimwear buying for next time.

Serre Chevalier, the village turned ski resort, provides lasting memories for all... Yasemen Kaner-White

2000 meters, is a good spot. On-site restaurant Le Chazelay came to the refuel rescue après ski with a hot cup of tea, and local fare of Les Galettes au Sarrasin; essentially a hearty buckwheat crêpe topped with lashings of Raclette cheese and local ham. More ski was to come before an afternoon tea back at the chalet and then a spin at the icekarting in Chantemerle, making for a fantastic day, culminating in a delicious home-cooked three course meal at the chalet to swap ski stories with fellow guests. I quickly learned that staying in a chalet leads to many benefits, notably the bonds made between visitors and a sense of home, whether you travel alone or with a companion. Far more fun was yet to come. Serre Chevalier really does cater for everyone, for even a novice can enjoy the brand new, hot-off-the-press venture called Snooc – one of the highlights of my trip. They say you can master Snooc after a mere 100 meters. Originally designed for those snow shoeing up mountains, Snooc, a sort of single ski which you sit upon and manoeuver with your body weight as you slide your way down, provides an exhilarating experience for all levels. Dog sledding and ski joering, when you’re pulled along behind snow friendly horses, are available options. For history buffs, ski all the way down to the highest town in Europe, the UNESCO heritage site Briançon, to poke around the famous 17th century Travel to Serre Chevalier fortified town. Go 30 mins out of town and discover Turin. If relaxation is more appealing than adventure, with Zenith holidays head to Le Monêtier-les-Bains for a 200-year-old www.zenithholidays.co.uk sensational spa experience and swim outside in the naturally 44.5 degree hot springs. Don’t leave without phone: 0203 137 7678 immersing your head under water in the ‘musical cave’ to float to French beats beaming out beneath you. For a night-time treat, book yourself a hot tub outdoors with Petrus Bains Nordiques, they even throw in marshmallows on a stick, so you can toast them under the stars, drying off in your gowns by an open fire. The Zenith crew covers tasty cuisine every evening, with a varied menu. For example crispy cheese parcels for starters, plump pork chops with a mouthwatering mustard sauce for main and a chocolate melt-in-the-middle pud, but there are options outside the comfort of your chalet too. Try a Snowcat ride to the mountain peak restaurant Chalet Ratier for a fondue to remember, washed down with a shot of locally made herbal liqueur Génépi, or a locally caught trout dish after a dip in the Roman Grands Bains de Monêtier Spa. You can also dine al fresco and order a picnic on the piste, or brave the cold and have a BBQ. Unlike its neighbouring glitzier resorts, you won’t pay a premium for instructors or food, so a 6.80 euro coke would be unheard off; good honest food at good honest prices is the theme. When planning your trip and after a bargain, Waddington suggests buying a cheaper flight in advance to somewhere like Grenoble (Zenith offer a flight finding service) and then often last minute accommodation can be found at a decent price tag. Alternatively book way in advance for a competitive deal. Note, Swiss airlines don’t charge extra for skis. 33 the riverside journals

T

he first time is always special, this adage couldn’t be more accurate with my recent Serre Chevalier first time ski adventure. Yes, I’d never been skiing before! Though a longterm goal, frankly a touch of fear and a loathing of the cold had conveniently prevented me taking to the slopes…until now. Serre Chevalier, with 300 days of sunshine per year, is comprised of three villages; Chantemerle, Villeneuve, Le Monêtier-les-Bains and the town of Briançon, and is in favourable contrast to alternatives such as chic Courchevel. Unusual in that it’s not a purpose built resort, instead it’s a traditional alpine village turned ski resort, in 1941, resulting in unique added charming character and authentic allure, a real holiday vibe as opposed to solely a ski base. A car transfer from nearby Malpensa airport organised by Zenith Holidays, acclaimed ‘activities holiday’ host, crunched its way through gobsmackingly beautiful snowy vistas, dressed in heavy snowfall, sure to benefit the slopes for the next day’s first ski lesson. As I arrived at aptly named ‘Le Refuge’, a toasty warm and cosy chalet situated on a quaint winding road sandwiched between seasoned alpine houses and original twee bars, a glistening smile from Katie Waddington, Zenith’s founder, met me at the door and welcomed me in. A cup of coffee from attentive ski mad James, the chalet host, and a reassuring chat with Waddington about all things ski and what to expect, meant my terror of the unknown melted and turned to thrilling thoughts instead. I was officially excited at the prospect of my first one-to-one lesson, yearning to learn the ropes on the picturesque larch tree lined Villeneuve slopes or, if all else fails, bouncing around like Tigger in the lush cotton-wool-like mounds of snow. Zenith pride themselves on holding the hands of both the skilled skiers, to the snow curious newbies like me, building bespoke itineraries for all ages, abilities and agendas, at which they excel. After packing essentials (extra layers to wear, tissues, lip balm, sun cream, woolly hat, sunglasses, silk glove liners) in my backpack, under the expert guidance of fellow chalet buddies, it was a convenient short trip to local Bréchu Sport for a ski fit. As a novice, nothing could have prepared me for the alien feeling of hoiking on the clunky cumbersome ski boots for the first time, however, all kitted out, with a helmet to boot, I was raring to go. Enamoured by the sheer vastness of imposing (part of the highest point in the Alps; Hautes-Alpes) snow drenched mountains, my ski lesson began with Philippe, my impossibly patient ESF ski instructor. The joy of holding on as the button lift dragged me to the top to make my way down the snow on skis, was an unexpected addition to a marvellous morning. A few times I invariably, unwillingly, made fresh tracks going off-piste on the ungroomed powdery snow, but I gather from serious skiers, Serre Chevalier, at a 1400m altitude and with 80% of the local ski area sitting above

Our latest property is situated in the medieval hamlet of Patrignone. Il Riposo is an elegant three-storey town-house, epitomising everything you would imagine an Italian home to be. Blending into the very fabric of this beautiful hamlet, Il Riposo is aptly named ‘the Retreat’, taking on the wonderful personality of this quiet, historic artists’ colony. Il Riposo dates back to the 12th century and has been carefully and lovingly restored by the Appassionata team of builders and artisans. Facing east towards the Adriatic Sea, the beautiful early morning sun washes over the walled garden throughout the day. The four double bedrooms and three bathrooms provide plenty of space to accommodate family and friends. The 210mq (2260sq ft) house is laid out over three floors with the main entrance at the 1st floor through an historic brick archway. The beautiful and surprisingly large entrance hall leads into a spacious, open plan dining room and kitchen with a balcony and steps into the walled garden. n Sunday 23 April, more than 38,000 runners will undertake the challenge of running 26.2 miles in the Virgin Money London Marathon. The world’s greatest marathon starts in Blackheath and winds its way past some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks on the way to the famous Finish Line on The Mall, in front of Buckingham Palace. Hundreds of thousands of spectators line every inch of the route to cheer on the runners in what has become one of London’s great street festivals. More than 40 bands (one per kilometre) keep the crowds entertained and spur on the runners and, for many of the pubs, it’s the busiest day of the year. At the front of the race, the world’s best athletes battle it out for victory. Olympic champion and defending London champion Jemima Sumgong (Kenya) is favourite to win the women’s race in a field packed with champions and triple Olympic track gold medallist Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia) tops the list of stellar names in the men’s field. More than 75% of the mass field run to raise money for charity and the London Marathon has now raised a staggering £830 million for charities since the first race in 1981. Last year, the total raised was £59.4 million, setting a world record for a one-day annual fundraising event for a tenth successive year. It’s the marathon that everyone wants to run – but it’s not easy to get a place. The public ballot for the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon will open online on www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com on Monday 1 May and close at 17:00 on Friday 5 May. A record number of 253,930 hopefuls from the UK alone applied for the 2017 race and it’s likely to be another record for 2018. But don’t despair if you’re not successful in the ballot. There are plenty of charities looking for people to run to raise money so select the cause that’s close to your heart. If you live overseas, you can apply for a place through one of the approved Tour Operators in your country. Once you’ve got that coveted place, you need to start training. There is a full range of training plans available on the website to guide everyone from a complete novice who’s never run before to an experienced club runner looking to improve a personal best. The team at Marathon House is with every runner every step of the way, with regular e-newsletters packed with useful information to live Q&A sessions on Facebook and other channels.

Motivate yourself to fitness –

B

with Better

etter Sports Psychologist Leon Popplewell looks at some simple tips for keeping motivated with your exercise routine. This spring, why not make a change to your life that’s health or fitness related? It could be the perfect time to lose a little winter weight or get a bit stronger so you can enjoy more outdoor activities this coming

summer. There are many opportunities to help with this. All you need to do is pick the one that suits you and stick to it. Keeping motivated is key to exercising regularly when there are competing work priorities and ways to spend your leisure time. So think about your goals and what you really want for yourself and the changes you want to make.

Here are some fitness hacks that can help your motivation: Get a Fitbit or other device. Stuck for time? Then these are great to tell you how active you are and how much you need to do to top up your activity levels. Schedule workouts. Make appointments with yourself or a friend, partner or family member to workout, at a specific time and place, just as you would with any other appointment.

38 the riverside journals

Do a 30-day Challenge. Challenge yourself. Do it with a group or your significant other. Put in rewards. Motivate yourself as much as you can. Mix it up. Mix up the routine to add variety. You can do push-ups and crunches and dumb bell exercises at home very easily, workout to a DVD, or go walking or jogging in your neighbourhood. Do it early in the morning. If you work out at this time, nothing will get in the way of the workout later in the day. Contact: Leon.Popplewell@gll.org

Introducing London Medical Concierge

avigating your journey through medical treatment can be complex, daunting and at times, a search with few answers. Now, an independent new venture – London Medical Concierge – has been launched to change this by offering innovative and fast guidance through all areas of medical treatment, providing priority consultations via an extensive and expanding network of London’s leading clinical specialists. CEO and Founder, Kirsty Ettrick, understands the struggle of trying to find the right medical treatments and specialists. After her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, she spent hours every night trying to find him the right care and emailing experts all over the world for opinions and options on treatment. Sadly, this wasn’t enough and he passed away later that year. However, a determined Kirsty made it her mission to help others in a similar situation. By creating a vast network of leading clinical specialists, she launched London Medical Concierge (LMC), committed to delivering excellence in bespoke clinical care. Listen In Every March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and this year research charity Ovarian Cancer Action has chosen the theme Listen In!

Ovarian cancer isn’t as well-known as some other female cancers, yet it is the sixth most common – with more than 7,000 diagnoses in the UK each year. The UK has one of the lowest survival rates in Western Europe, with 14:16:26 a woman dying from ovarian cancer19/01/2011 every two hours, resulting in 4,300 deaths annually. Ovarian Cancer Action says one of the reasons for the poor survival rate in the UK is that the disease is often spotted too late. The charity’s Chief Executive, Katherine Taylor, says: “Ovarian cancer is particularly difficult to diagnose yet early diagnosis is crucial. When women are diagnosed in the early stages of ovarian cancer they have a 90% chance of surviving for more than five years but this reduces to 22% when diagnosed in the later stages.” The charity recognises that speaking up about your health can be difficult and has developed a symptoms diary to help women record their symptoms and take it to their GP. Search for ‘Ovarian Cancer Action’ in your phone’s app store, or download a paper version at www. ovarian.org.uk.

osmetic surgery is now accessible to more people than ever before, with 51,000 British people opting to go for cosmetic surgery in 2015 alone, a 12.6% rise from the previous year. Whilst many people have in the past opted for a non-invasive treatment, the longer lasting results of a surgical procedure are tempting more people than ever into more permanent solutions. Our industry is still experiencing rising demand for various procedures, but 2016 saw the beginnings of changes to the more traditional requests we normally receive from patients. Gone are the large implants popular in the early 2000s and a new era of natural beauty is being ushered in, with 90% of our patients now requesting a natural look. Cosmetic surgeon Ibby Younis, from MyAesthetics Ltd, the proud parent company of Safety in Beauty Award winning ‘MyBreast’, has looked at the top trends our surgeons predict will be filling clinics across London in the coming year.

Smaller breasts In 2016, we saw the trend emerging for smaller breast implants and this is set to continue in 2017. The average size for breast augmentation requests in London are now reducing from 500cc to around 300 – 400cc in clinics. For those who only want to be one cup size larger, there is a growing demand for fat transfer or lipomodelling techniques, instead of implants. This involves taking a patient’s own body fat (usually from the waist or thighs) and using traditional liposuction methods to transfer it to the breasts to enhance shape. Patients are starting to request this technique more, as it provides further aesthetic benefits, such as a narrower waistline and slimmer thighs as well as an enhanced bust, from one procedure. Implant technology has improved and there is now a great selection of smaller, more natural-shaped implants for a more athletic profile made popular by celebrities such as Poldark’s Eleanor Tomlinson. Implants are being placed under the muscles (dual-plane) to disguise the upper edge of the implant, and there is even an increasing trend towards teardrop shaped “anatomical” implants. The era of fake looking boob jobs is a thing of the past, not only because they are no longer in fashion, but because technology has advanced so much that older procedure styles are simply not possible anymore.

Male cosmetic surgery Statistics show that male cosmetic surgery is on the rise with procedures seeing a 100% increase in the last decade, and we expect this trend to continue in 2017. Treatment of Gynaecomastia (‘man boobs’) is now commonplace, and is no longer a taboo subject. Increasing numbers of men are approaching us for facial rejuvenating procedures, eyelid surgery and neck contouring procedures to help alter the aging process. We are also seeing more work being completed on the neck and jaw, with men aspiring to that ‘Tom Hiddleston jawline’.

The changing face of beauty The original windswept Hollywood Facelifts of the 80s (where the face was pulled back towards the ears) has been replaced with techniques that lift the facial tissues upward, reversing the natural descent of facial and neck tissues that occurs with age. In eyelid surgery, there has been a shift away from the removal of fat around the eye, which often gives a sunken, hollowed out appearance. Instead fat is sculpted, repositioned or added around the eyelid, along with muscle excision and tightening. It’s predicted to become an easier process in 2017 through a micronized injectable process (ALMI), with little to no downtime, using a patient’s own fat.

New techniques While the tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) continues to be one of the most common procedures, it is now frequently combined with liposuction to the flanks and other areas. In fact, the increasingly popular Brazilian tummy tuck puts more of an emphasis on recontouring the abdomen through liposuction, than on tissue excision and skin tightening. Liposuction alone remains a popular procedure, but with improvements in techniques and post-operative compression garments, we have seen an increase in requests for multiple areas to be treated in one session. There are also other new surgeries emerging which are gaining increased interest from the public, such as dimple creation and abdominal etching, which we think will continue to grow in popularity throughout 2017.

Ensuring you find the right surgeon Cosmetic surgery providers are continuing to develop innovative methods, ensuring the industry is always on top of the very latest surgical requirements. The wide array of choices available is generating more interest amongst potential patients, but with greater volume comes, in some cases, greater risk. Patients must have an open and understanding relationship with their surgeon to ensure their expectations are realistic and that optimal results are achieved for the individual. It’s important not be swayed by offers or deals. Research the treatment, and read reviews to make sure you pick the right practice for you. Your surgery should only be performed by fully accredited plastic surgeons who are members of either BAAPS and/or BAPRAS, which are the representative bodies for maintaining excellent industry standards.

The changing face of cosmetic surgery: what will be the most talked about trends across London this year?

Just for the record, could I begin by asking you to tell me your name and the nature of your business. My name is Iglika, and I am the CEO and Founder of USPAAH. You were previously working as an investment banker. What encouraged you to change your profession? While working in the city for many years, I was constantly struggling to fit treatments into my busy schedule. I saw a gap in the market to create a high quality on-demand service and I decided to put all my efforts and resources into making it a reality. When was this? And is this where the idea of a home spa came from? The idea came around two and a half years ago, when after an incredibly stressful day, I wanted a massage and none of the spas in my area had any availability. I thought to myself, why couldn’t someone just come to my house when I need them? So as I understand it, you take your treatments to people in their own homes. Is it very expensive? We deliver spa quality treatments to clients’ homes, hotels or offices in London zones 1-4. Our prices reflect the expertise of our Sparistas, the quality of our chosen cosmetics, and the incredible convenience we bring to clients by saving them the trip outside. Do you offer gift vouchers? Yes, you can purchase a gift voucher for your loved ones from our website, and soon, directly from our app too. Is your service only available for people living in London? For the moment we cover London zones 1-4, but we’re always adding more therapists to our platform in order to expand to surrounding areas too. Do you have a lot of regular clients? Absolutely. We’re really proud of the customer loyalty we’ve managed to earn in this short period. Close to 50% of our customers become repeat clients. What would be the average age range of your clients, and do you find one gender more predominant in using your services? Naturally women are more accustomed to wellness and beauty treatments, however as much as 30% of our clients are men, and we very much try to cater to a unisex clientele. The average age of our customers is between 25-45, and is predominantly comprised of busy professionals or young parents living or working in central London. Iglika, on a personal level how did you find balancing running your own business with the demands of home life? It is a challenge indeed, and my husband often jokes that he’s having dinner with my laptop rather than with me. I am getting better and better though with managing my time more efficiently and not overloading myself with the tasks of the business which of course are never-ending. I don’t suppose you get a lot of leisure time, but when you do, how do you like to spend those precious hours? I love going for runs with my dog, and just being out of the house with friends or family. What plans are there for USPAAH for future expansion – maybe to other areas? Are you considering franchising the model?

42 the riverside journals

For now, we’d like to focus on securing a significant market share in London, and then rolling out the model and the brand to other cities in the UK and other international cities. I think the concept of your company is very innovative and from what you have told me greatly demanded. Thank you, Iglika, for talking to me and on behalf of Riverside Journals I wish you and your team continued success with USPAAH.

Business Interview with Iglika Ghouse

The Importance of Emotional Resilience Emotional resilience is our ability to think, feel and act in a way that enables us to respond positively and adapt to whatever life throws at us – and to be able to bounce back from setbacks and adversity. This is especially important in these times of Trump and Brexit – recent bywords for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Currently it can seem like we are in a perpetual state of stress and anxiety! No surprise then, that according to mental health charity, MIND, 1 in 4 of us experience mental health issues at some point in our lives. So, building strong emotional resilience is important – here are my 5 steps to success: 1. Take control and responsibility Denying a problem won’t make it go away. Take ownership of the issue and work through possible resolutions. 2. Build relationships We don’t need to do things on our own. We all have different skills – so build relationships, within family, friends and peer groups, to create strong, solution focused support teams for yourself – and as a bonus, you will be helping others too! 3. Plan for the future and learn from experience Consider what you can learn from any situation. There are usually some positives in even the most negative of situations. Think ahead – what do you need to be successful? 4. Give yourself space and time Chaos causes emotional unrest. Stop the clock and do something completely different to break the state of turmoil. Give yourself time to recharge your batteries and refuel. Rest and recuperation are vital components of sustainable resilience going forward. 5. Be curious and open to adventure Sometimes the easy path is not the best for us. Moving away from what is safe and comfortable and challenging our boundaries allows us to grow and learn, and in turn, build future resilience.

Change begins by thinking, and then acting differently. Sometimes we can make those changes on our own; sometimes we need support to make change happen. Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

Treating Anxiety Related to World Events

W

orld events from the Brexit decision to the election of nationalist leaders in countries from the United States to Austria have led to a dramatic shift in politics, disturbing stories in the media as well as unusual experiences in everyday life. Increasingly, psychotherapists are seeing clients experiencing not personal trauma or issues with depression, but rather symptoms of more generalised anxiety that is focused on world events. Often patients first talk to family physicians and make requests for something to “calm their nerves” or to address feelings of being overwhelmed, uncertain and even empty or hostile about the change in the world. They may feel alienated from neighbours and friends who are supporting nationalistic or extreme viewpoints, creating a rift in what the individual sees in their safety net and throughout the current social climate.

Treating the Issue Physicians, recognising the mounting crisis in people experiencing generalised anxiety about world events, are referring patients to psychotherapy. Here, instead of using medications that affect the brain chemicals and alter the emotional response, the therapist works with the patient to address how the anxiety is impacting their life. Then, the client and the psychotherapist work to put their world experiences in a reality-based context. For many clients, this will include considering how the current political and social climate will directly impact their lives and how they have options to address concerns. Changes in the world can have very real and personal effects on the lives of people in any community. They can trigger repressed or long forgotten memories of other issues in the past, possibly bringing those issues to the surface and causing a heightened level of anxiety. Simply avoiding social media or not watching the news is not going to relieve anxiety. Talking to a professional and understanding the root cause of the fear or anxiety will be critical in finding a healthy, productive way forward even in a world that may be full of changes and challenges.

The Future of Baby Making by Dr Kim Clugston

T

45 the riverside journals

Dr Kim Clugston is a Fertility Expert at DuoFertility Mobile www.duofertility.com the only fertility wearable with a personalised service

he fertility industry is developing rapidly, fertility treatments such as IVF and ICSI continue to advance their techniques to help improve success rates, and there are now many apps on the market that promise to help you in your quest to make a baby. These can be beneficial in helping women track their cycles, as they calculate when a woman is likely to be most fertile (based on the date of her last period date and using a database of averages). Looking at the development of health apps over the last few years, it certainly seems that technology will become part of everyday support for those wanting to conceive a baby. Whilst apps are a good source of information and can be a useful starting point, the generalised nature of apps does not always provide the solution or answers to why conception has not happened for an individual. We are living in a generation where technology is part of our everyday life and it can be easy to rely on it for all aspects of the way we live. However, when it comes to health, and in particular trying to conceive, the human brain should never be underestimated and replaced. Fertility apps can provide you with the knowledge of when you are most likely to be ovulating to help you estimate the best time for you to try, but this doesn’t take into account other factors that may be affecting you such as hormonal imbalances, lifestyle, age or how long you have been trying to conceive. Women’s cycles are unique and to really understand what you can do to improve your chances of conception you need someone with experience, not only to analyse the data from the app but also to assess you and your partner and provide you with the options to get you the best results. This insight gives a couple confidence to adjust the way they approach trying to get pregnant naturally. By way of an example, DuoFertility Mobile supports couples’ fertility with a combined approach, using a fertility app, a body sensor and fertility expertise. The sensor measures a woman’s basal body temperature to detect ovulation and the data collected is synchronised with the app; crucially though, it is also analysed by fertility experts who can help couples interpret their data and then work with them to provide fertility advice, suggestions, guidance and reassurance. Studies looking at this complete service show that even couples who had been previously struggling to conceive for one year, 72% conceived using the DuoFertility programme over 12 cycles. The future of baby making looks bright, with new and easy-to-access innovations to aid the conception process, but it is important as our lives become ever more dominated by technology, not to neglect the benefits of what the human element offers, especially when it comes to fertility.

ith a smartphone and internet connection, I can turn control my house from anywhere in the world. With smart home technology, I can turn on lights, manage the heating and even play with my cat. Other people can let someone into their house, water their garden or check on cameras in their house. Home automation is nothing new. Over the past few years, it has become easier than ever for the average person to control their home. Whether you are home, or away, our smartphones have become the remote controls for our houses. You simply need to plug a box into your Wi-Fi hub, change a few light bulbs (or other ‘smart home devices’) and have a smartphone in your hand. Up until recently, controlling the smart home meant using a range of apps for smart home devices. More recently, it has become easier to control your home with one master app. Apple’s iOS, the software that runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV, features HomeKit. HomeKit communicates with smart home devices with Apple Home app. The app, which is pre-loaded on Apple devices, lets you control your home with Siri, in the app or in Control Center. This means you can tell Siri to ‘set movie mode’ to change the lights, ‘open the garage door’ or ‘turn on the kettle’. You can also set up automations, so that when you get near to home, it turns on the lights, turns up the heating and opens the garage door. Other platforms, such as Google’s Android or Amazon Echo, enable similar control. With these platforms, you are able to control the home by installing different apps, or ‘Skills’ in the case of Echo. One example of this is IFTT (If This, Then That). IFTT comes with ‘recipes’ that you can turn on. For example, you can set it so that if it is about to rain, the lights flash blue. There are hundreds of other recipes that let you control your house exactly how you want to. Being able to control or manage your home has never been easier thanks to smart home technology. There are more devices than ever too – including smart plant watering devices. At the moment, the smart home is still more of a want than a must for many people. If you want a smart home, now is the time to dive in. By Robert Haslam – Big Ideas Machine

Choosing taps and shower heads for your bath What’s popular in shower head design? Drench head style shower heads are still a popular choice due to the volume and force of water they provide. However, shower heads offering multiple sprays, and a design finish that will match or complement the rest of the brassware in the bathroom, are also now highly desirable. The size of the shower head also becomes an important feature as the size of the head can impact the performance felt by the user. The bigger the shower head, the less forceful the water becomes. If you’re looking for a more powerful showering experience, choose a shower head with a small diameter. Though water flow is less, water pressure will increase, delivering a stronger and more invigorating flow. A square design head shower is becoming more popular, and can add an on-trend look to the room. Lozenge shaped shower heads are another great option and are designed with the human body in mind.

Choose the best products for your home’s water system Make sure that the mixer you buy – whether a basin tap, shower valve or bath filler – is compatible with your water system. If you have a low pressure system, under 1 bar, make sure you choose a mixer that is adapted to a low flow system. This will ensure optimum performance. If you have a low pressure system, installing a separate pump in your shower or mixers will help to increase the water pressure.

Eco-friendly solutions Water saving in the home is becoming more relevant than ever before, as people are increasingly aware that the products they use can have a significant impact on the environment. Homeowners are now looking for appliances and gadgets that help conserve precious resources, use less energy, and are kind to the pocket. Look out for products that feature clever technologies, such as GROHE’s EcoJoy, which works to conserve water and energy, without compromising on the performance of the shower or mixer. Also take note of products listed under the WELL Water Efficiency Label, which recognise products that are designed and tested to reduce water consumption.

Bath fillers and taps

Finishing touches The finish of your tap is essential. Ensure that you choose a tap that is coated in order to prevent rust and limescale for a long maintenance life, and easy cleaning. There are a number of finishes available, from traditional chrome to alternatives such as moon white, super steel and rose gold, to suit a variety of bathroom decors.

The location of the bath is an important factor in how bath mixers might vary. It is important to match the right filling option with your bath, both in terms of water delivery performance and looks – so much so that some manufacturers are now offering a choice of low pressure deck mounted options to high pressure overflow filling options, which create more choice when choosing your bathroom design. Customers can now choose between a variety of designs and filling methods to best suit the space requirement perfectly. Depending on where the bath is located, and plumbing restrictions in the room, customers can choose between free-standing or fixed bath fillers. Wall mounted fillers are also available which allow the water to cascade into the bath beautifully.

pacers Tile and Wood Flooring have been supplying high quality Engineered Oak floors to the retail and commercial sector for over 25 years. We have worked closely with our factory to produce a range of wood flooring that not only mirrors current trends but is technically and environmentally the most advanced available. All our Engineered Oak is thoroughly tested, is EUTR compliant and SVLK certified. The top layer is genuine Western European Oak. None of it is Chinese or Siberian so you are assured of its source and quality. The ‘Core’ (the important bit) is constructed of single species Plantation Hevea (Rubberwood). It doesn’t grow naturally in South East Asia so is farmed for this purpose. As the Hevea tree nears the end of its rubber producing life it is felled and immediately replaced with a younger sapling that not only uses up more harmful CO2 but also produces more rubber. The Hevea used for the core of all our wood flooring has a density similar to Oak giving our floors unsurpassed stability in all different climates and environments. Hevea will always outperform any plywood or softwood cored material found in so many cheaper alternative wood floors. The back layer construction is also a locally grown plantation pine species, which again adds to the already excellent stability of our flooring. The vast majority of our wood flooring has undergone some degree of hand finishing ensuring a consistent high quality, high performance wood floor. This hand finishing gives each of our floors a ‘bespoke’ feel. Our ‘Antique’ finished floors all feature textures and surfaces produced entirely by hand rather than automation that gives each style a unique feel in terms of grain and colour. All of our Oak floors are treated with the specifically designed Extreme Matt Oil. Using German technology from Klump Coatings in Stuttgart these oils, as long as the floor is kept clean during installation and undergoes some form of regular basic domestic cleaning, will require no further applications throughout the floor’s life. When you choose to buy your wood floor from Spacers you are assured that it is among some of the best wood flooring available in the world…. Visit the ‘Special Offers’ section of our website to see some of the remarkable new woods available or simply pop into one of our showrooms to see our extensive displays and take home samples.

The Outdoor Classroom

A

lmost 100 years ago Margaret Macmillan wrote in The Nursery School, “The best kept classroom and the richest cupboard are roofed only by the sky”. Today, with the increasing use of technology, the reduction in play spaces, particularly in our cities, and with children starting school earlier, her words are possibly more significant than ever. At St George’s we believe that children should be outdoors as much as indoors, and that a welldesigned, well-organised, integrated indoor/outdoor environment is crucial in child development. It should be, in Margaret Macmillan’s words, “unique in its opportunities, in its variety and interest”. What is it that makes outdoor play so different from indoors? Of course, we could take out cars, dolls or bricks and replicate indoor play outside, but by its very nature, outdoor play is different. It is about taking risks, experimenting, discovering, making up games, noisy role play, and singing and laughing without the limits set by being indoors. A young child’s need for involvement as well as their well-being, alongside their urge to explore and make sense of the world, can be satisfied through high quality play in an outdoor environment.

“There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer and the morning more fragrant.”

by Emma Adriano Head of Lower School St George’s School Windsor Castle

So what areas of development does outdoor play enhance? It not only offers the more obvious physical benefits in terms of an increase in a child’s physical development, capability and activity, but it sets up patterns for a healthy and active lifestyle. Freedom of movement encouraged in outdoor spaces also promotes a sense of well-being, and for many children playing outdoors in their early years setting may be the only opportunity they have to play safely and freely whilst they learn to negotiate and assess risk, and develop the skills to manage new situations. Children become familiar with nature, the weather and the change of seasons. Research has shown that a child’s language, communication and problem solving skills can also benefit in the outdoors environment. Quieter children learn to speak more, and their more active peers become calmer and more focused. Friendships are established and communication skills grow through cooperative play. The outside helps a child to self-regulate, resulting in fewer behavioural problems, and giving children more physical space and more opportunity to be active may reduce possible conflict. It is well documented that there is a strong connection between movement and well-being and movement and cognition. The outdoors allows children to move more freely within their environment, and this is particularly important to those children who learn best through active movement. It helps them to practise and master skills, and promotes positive attitudes towards the world through exploration and interaction. The outside classroom also stimulates a child’s senses, increasing their awareness of others as well as giving a strong sense of self. Mastery of all these skills in early childhood is fundamental in the development of an enquiring mind and later learning. Whilst a well-planned outside classroom gives children a more relaxing space to learn and initiate their own activities, the support of well-informed, enthusiastic and engaging teachers is key. The high levels of interest and involvement that can be seen when children are engaged in learning outside allow teachers and classroom assistants plenty of time for long interactions and in-depth observations. Just as the outdoor environment encourages the early years child to become familiar with nature, weather and the changing seasons, it gives teachers and assistants further opportunity to observe and nurture the rapid changes in each child.

The 3Rs

W

e all know how important it is for our children to achieve a good level of understanding and practical application of the ‘3Rs’, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, as they move through the education system and into adult life. However, there are another ‘3Rs’ that can be easily overlooked but are fundamental in education and our children’s wellbeing, success and happiness in adult life, Resilience, Respect and Reflection. Knowledge is often said to be all powerful but it is resilience in learning that is all enabling. Getting it right can be so important to children and quite often to parents too but it is being able to accept being wrong and learning and growing from that experience that helps us to learn best and learn more. Being the best is a final destination where nothing more is achievable. Resilience in learning, sport and the arts will perpetually achieve the best. Teaching a lifelong love of learning and enjoyment of challenges will mean growth and success for our children. Respect is a word often overused but misunderstood. It is not about bowing to authority and rules nor blindly following others and their examples. Children should learn to recognise and respect themselves. Understand their thoughts, emotions and values so that they can learn to respect their peers, parents and other people in their lives. As they grow into adulthood they will then be able to respect the world around them and the rich cultural experiences and opportunities that society has to offer. Emotional wellbeing is quite the buzz word at the moment but should never be underestimated. Children should be given the time, skills and support to learn how to reflect. In the busy world of ballet classes, rugby training, gym and swimming clubs, and not forgetting extra tuition, our children have so little time for ‘boredom’, that wonderful time to amuse themselves, to stop and contemplate their achievements, mistakes and small enjoyments. Time to think about our lives, our actions and our influence will enable us to be a valued member of society with purpose and a clear moral compass. Education underpins success in life but success is so much more than the knowledge and exams taught in schools. Children who grow into young adults with the lifelong skills of resilience, respect and the ability to reflect will have all the skills required to make a success out of an exciting future!

hat’s an easy and fun way to get your children to eat their greens? Well why not encourage them to plant up their own fruit & vegetable box? Squire’s Garden Centres are running a great activity at May Half Term where children can plant a box with a choice of three tasty plants to grow and take home. They can choose from pepper, lettuce, tomato or strawberry plants. All these plants are very easy to grow, and in no time at all your children will have a supply of fresh fruit and veg on their doorstep! The health benefits of fruit and vegetables are widely known. They are packed with vitamins and nutrients that are essential for children’s growth and development, and they taste good too! Getting children to grow their own fruit and vegetables not only teaches them where food comes from, but also teaches them the importance of healthy eating. Plus if your child is a fussy eater, then getting them involved and enthused about growing their own can really help when it comes to mealtimes. As well as planting a fruit and veg box at Squire’s, children can also take part in a free Veggie Hunt. They simply have to follow a fun trail of questions around the garden centre, and then they’ll receive a sticker at the end. Squire’s “Create & Grow” Half Term activities run from Monday 29th May – Friday 2nd June at all of their centres except Chertsey. There’s no need to book, just turn up anytime from 10am-4pm. Activities are on a first come first served basis and each takes around 20 minutes. A parent or guardian must accompany children at all times. Then why not relax in Squire’s Café Bar afterwards? There’s a wide selection of drinks and snacks, lunch options (including children’s meals) and a very tempting afternoon tea.

hoosing your child’s school is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. After visiting a number of schools, talking to family and friends and sometimes moving house you then have a two month wait for the offer letter or e-mail to drop into your mail box. Only after all that stress and worry do you get to that magical moment – your child’s first day at school! Starting school is one of the most exciting and unforgettable days of your child’s life but if it’s your first time too it can all seem very daunting. There are however some things you can do to help prepare both you and your child for those first few days. Other than the obvious things like being able to name different colours, count to 10, read their own name, there are some more important things you can help them with. Go on play dates and leave your child for a few hours so they are used to you not being there. Children need to be able to play and share without you telling them what to do. They need to be able to negotiate and find their own way, sometimes losing out, getting upset and then being able to compromise and work things out. Practise some of the everyday challenges they will face such as getting dressed in and out of the school uniform. Make sure they can put on their own shoes, do up their coats and change into their PE kits. Name school uniform – remember it all looks the same to a 5-year-old! Lunchtimes can also be a challenge. Spend some time practising with a knife and fork, cutting food and knowing when to use a spoon. Washing hands and using the toilet properly is also important. Don’t forget children need to get used to shutting the door and respecting each other’s privacy. Read to your child as much as you can and for sustained periods of time, not just at bedtime. Help them get used to sitting and joining in with the story for up to 15 minutes. Good listening skills are so important when starting school, being able to focus, follow instructions and fully take part in activities will enable your child to enjoy school and make the most of all the opportunities that come their way. Don’t worry about reading books and schemes, comparing your child and sinking into that competitive trap! Starting school is about settling in, developing socially, physically and emotionally so that they embrace a love of learning and curiosity that will grow throughout their school life. Meet the other mums. Go to the induction day and say hello, ask the school if you can have a coffee morning while the children are getting to know the classroom. If not, encourage the others to meet at a nearby coffee bar. It’s not just the children who will be together throughout primary school, the school gate, play dates and school events will mean that you’ll be socialising with the other mums for the next seven years as well. Organise a picnic over the summer holidays so you can all get together and start to know your children’s friends and make some new friends yourselves. Most of all enjoy the experience, it’s so precious and over all too soon. Go to everything you can, assemblies, school plays, PTA events and do all that you can to join in. Volunteer for trips and cooking, reading and sharing any expertise you may have. Your child will love having you there and you’ll find it so rewarding. Both you and your child should enjoy school!

France On the 16th of April an Easter egg hunt to remember takes place in pretty Pays de la Loire. Hidden in and among the grounds of the Château at Brissac-Quincy are over 60,000 chocolate eggs waiting to be found and snaffled, the ideal family occasion for chocaholics!

Czech Republic

Easter Celebrations Across the World Yasemen Kaner-White Whether you are religious or not, no doubt you wouldn’t say no to a choccy egg. Whatever the motives, Easter is a time to be celebrated, and millions do just that around the world annually. Here are just a few examples of how…

Germany

Germany Spring flowers, Easter trees and colourful twigs and eggs are on display signifying the coming of Easter. The Easter bunny is important to Germans, mentioned since the 16th century, as it symbolises fertility. Certainly a family occasion, everyone gathers to visit the Easter service at church, possibly the most renowned being the night service at the Cologne Cathedral, promptly followed by a traditional Easter lunch of lamb, potatoes, and vegetables. Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia As well as tasty chocolate eggs on offer there is another historical tradition which is still observed. As a symbolisation of youth and strength and to aid women to have a healthy spring season, they are doused in cold water and ceremonially ‘whipped’ with a whip braided from thin branches of a willow by the men. Italy The Scoppio del Carro, or the “Explosion of the Cart” in Florence, dates back over 350 years and celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. A priest rubs three flints together to form a spark which lights the Easter candle, which then lights coals in a container on the Cart and the procession delivers the Holy Fire to the Archbishop of Florence. In Bormio, as part of its Easter tradition, spring is welcomed by blessing five lambs and holding races and contests among the city’s quarters. Sicily sees in Easter celebrations with pilgrimages and processions of people in masks meandering through the city streets. Russia Easter is the day of feasting, after the Great Lent it is time for indulgence, always included are Easter cakes, kulich (sweet Easter bread) and painted eggs. An old Russian Easter tradition is to send and deliver gifts to disadvantaged families and relatives, orphanages, hospitals and prisons. Bulgaria After 46 days of fasting, on Easter Sunday, a hearty meal is had, with the kozunak (sweet leavened bread), symbolising the body of Christ, being the centrepiece. Macedonia Again the theme on Easter Sunday is celebrating with indulgent foods, traditional Macedonian dishes are delivered and must include dyed red eggs symbolising the blood of Christ. Crete Villages prepare for a bonfire effigy of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Jesus Christ, as documented in the New Testament of the Bible. In the lead up to the bonfire, people gather sticks and branches in preparation.

Switzerland

Switzerland Easter nests (little nests filled with chocolate eggs, coloured eggs and chocolate bunnies) are hidden in the villages for children to find, followed by a big brunch and a church service. In the Ticino, the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, there is a big Easter procession enjoyed by all.

Lebanon Orthodox Christians go to a church liturgy at Easter, either Sunday morning or a midnight liturgy between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday, a tasty lunch including stuffed turkey with nuts and served with maamoul (cookies) and sugar coated chickpeas and almonds serving as a treat for families to share.

Not only can you browse the full Easter range, you can also enjoy one of Chococo’s addictive origin hot chocolates, delight in a chocolate ice cream sundae or enjoy locally baked cakes. Chococo was founded by husband and wife team Claire and Andy Burnet 14 years ago in Swanage, Dorset. Claire wanted to create delicious chocolates that were freshly handmade and didn’t use any additives or preservatives, in the style of artisan chocolates she tasted in the 1980s when her parents lived in Brussels. From the beginning they made all the chocolates freshly by hand with origin chocolate and this is something that the company still does today. Working with only fine origin cocoa from Venezuela, Colombia and Madagascar, their mouthwatering creations are unique as they also use local Dorset and Hampshire produce, including fresh Dorset cream, wherever possible. Chococo has always been a firm believer in working with chocolate high in cocoa solids and low in sugar, as it believes in giving its customers a fine chocolate, not a sugar, experience. To date, Chococo has won 68 fine food awards for its chocolates. Always innovating in the flavours of chocolates it offers and also in the stylish way it packages them, their Easter eggs make great gifts for children and adults. www.chococo.co.uk T: 01929 421777

All the eggs are £10.95 and 175g each, they include:

A Butterfly Studded Egg One for lovers of springtime and milk chocolate, this 43% Venezuelan origin milk chocolate egg comes with milk chocolate butterflies studded on the inside. It is hand-decorated with hatches of white and dark chocolate.

The C181 Robot Studded Egg The Chococo C181 Robots have become very popular and so they have been granted their own egg. On the outside, this 43% Venezuelan origin milk chocolate egg is hand-decorated with a starburst of edible silver shimmer, think a space vortex pattern! On the inside you will find two milk chocolate C181 robots, dusted with edible gold shimmer, waiting to be enjoyed.

The Dorset Dinosaur Studded Egg An iconic Chococo Easter egg that is both popular with children and adults. ‘Why is there a Dinosaur in an Easter egg?’ you ask. Well Chococo was founded in Swanage, Dorset, which is on the UK’s Jurassic Coast. Inside this 43% Venezuelan origin milk chocolate egg avid paleontologists can find two mini dark and white chocolate dinosaurs and ammonites. The outside is marbled in dark and white chocolate to create the effect of a marbled dinosaur egg.

Heavenly Honeycomb Studded Eggs This popular, scrumptious egg comes in two formats – a 43% Venezuelan origin milk chocolate version and a 67% Madagascan origin dark chocolate version. Both are decorated on the inside with large chunks of Chococo’s handmade honeycomb. The crunchy honeycomb is made with local Dorset honey from Field Honey Farms, based in Swanage in Dorset. The milk chocolate egg comes dusted on the outside with edible gold shimmer and the dark chocolate egg is decorated on the outside with edible red shimmer.

A Seaside Studded Egg With Chococo’s close proximity to the Dorset coast, it seems only fitting that for this year it has a 67% Madagascan origin dark chocolate egg studded on the inside with seahorses, sea shells and starfish. This egg is dairy-free and is also suitable for vegans.

The Judgement of Two

Review by Alex Bailey Staines

73 the riverside journals

T

he Vineyard at Stockcross, near Newbury, is a real reflection of the passions of its owner, Sir Peter Michael – he founded Classic FM, set up a winery in California; collects art and loves good food! I have not had the pleasure of meeting the man himself but feel that, if I did, we would get along very well! Originally an 18th-century hunting-lodge, The Vineyard was turned into a hotel, spa and restaurant by Sir Peter in 1998. I visited with my daughter on a cold, sunny day in February. We were there for lunch and, having arrived a little early, were soon enveloped in a comfortable sofa surrounded by winery artifacts. It gave us time to learn the story behind the statement painting, The Judgement of Paris – a 6m by 3m oil on canvas by Gary Myatt – commissioned by Sir Peter, and illustrating one of the biggest dramas in the history of wine. In 1976, the French wine establishment gathered for a blind tasting, comparing France’s finest with some unknown California wines… to their horror they awarded first place, in both the red and white categories, to the upstart Californian wines! The Vineyard is certainly passionate about food and wine and there is the opportunity to relive this extraordinary seismic moment… and make your own mind up… with a judgement tasting menu, designed by Robby Jenks, the rising gastronomic star chef, together with accompanying wine flight with representative wines from both sides of the pond, chosen from their 30,000 bottle strong wine cellar. Knowing that The Vineyard was a member of the exclusive and highly regarded Relais & Châteaux, I expected it to be good, what was unexpected, and rather lovely, was the warmth of the staff and their genuine desire to ensure that our experience was fabulous. We perhaps shouldn’t have been so surprised, Downton Abbey (aka Highclere Castle) is just up the road and The Vineyard is where the Dowager Countess of Grantham (aka Dame Maggie Smith) stayed while filming! Already planning our next trip we asked for a tour and were quickly envisaging a day spent in the tranquil spa, followed by a superlative supper and a night of hedonist comfort in one of the elegant and luxurious bedrooms… Or perhaps we would do one of the enticing events organized to showcase different aspects of The Vineyard… a Ladies Lunch day… three courses with wine flight, introduced by ITV’s The Wine Show’s presenter, Amelia Singer… Or maybe the five course Californian Wine Dinner hosted by talented chef, Robby Jenks… One thing is for sure, we were determined to return and we had not even sat down to eat yet! Seated at a spacious table with sun streaming through the floor to ceiling windows, we chose from a lunch menu, deliberately ordering different dishes to maximize our taste experience and passing responsibility for the wine choice to the very friendly and extremely knowledgeable sommelier, Milena. We sat back and enjoyed… Goats cheese with beetroot sorbet, paired with Californian Fume Blanc… Foie gras ganache with poached cranberries, complemented by Alsace Gewurz from France… Bream with spiced coconut cream, served, surprisingly, with a delicious Turkish red Kalecik Karasi… Beef fillet with truffled pomme purée, paired with Tannat from Uruguay… Lychee and grapefruit waffle with banana cream accompanied by Chilean Muscat… and finally… chocolate cream with lime jelly and almond ice cream paired with, my personal favourite, a Black Californian Muscat. The Vineyard has a relaxed Californian vibe, interesting artwork, lovely staff, who are personally vested in ensuring you have a perfect time, and the food and wine are just sublime. Go… and enjoy!

T

hree weeks before our wedding day our reception was cancelled. We were disappointed but not unduly phased despite invitations issued and responded to. On reflection, maybe we were slightly relieved, as it was an expensive choice. The following Saturday, while walking in the rain, discussing our options, we noticed an alternative venue overlooking Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Soaked to the skin, our wellingtons encased in mud, we entered the foyer of an intimate hotel. We explained our predicament. The Italian manager informed us that the hotel had never hosted a wedding before but that, for us, they would do so. He assured us that we had nothing to worry about and to leave it in his capable hands. We were pleased to do so, and he did not let us down. It was a perfect day. Although best laid plans can go wrong it is always preferable to start planning as soon as you decide to marry. There is much to consider and planning helps to prioritise and avoid disappointment. There are plenty of online websites to help you with this. Sit down with your partner and discuss the sort of wedding you would both like. It can be as individual as you are and expensive or as inexpensive as you choose. It will always be more expensive than you envisage. Decide on your budget. Tailor the day to suit you. Remember that a wedding is a public declaration of your love for each other witnessed by family and friends. It is the best excuse for a party. Weddings are big business so there are an abundance of firms willing to cater for your needs. Be organised but also be prepared to go with the flow on the day. My sister, on her wedding day, hired a double decker bus to transport her guests to the reception. It got stuck in traffic and never materialised. Guests hailed taxis and all arrived on time. May to September remains peak wedding season with August the most popular month. Venues are slightly less expensive in autumn/winter and can be just as romantic. Think log fires, rustling leaves, fur wraps, candlelight and shadowed corners for secret trysts. Planning a wedding is exciting but it can also be stressful. Be kind to yourself and your partner. Consider a night of the week when you don’t discuss ‘the wedding’. I was chatting to a lady recently who is getting married later this year. Sensible and practical, she is attempting to keep everything on an even keel but admits to feeling overwhelmed at times. On these occasions her husband-to-be sits her down with a glass of whisky and encourages her to exhale. She breathes again and so does he.

Suitable Tailoring

T

he late Adrian Anthony Gill concluded that, “…the suit is the greatest British invention ever…”. As a prominent journalist and critic, he contributed to GQ, Esquire, Vanity Fair, Tatler and Condé Nast Traveller magazines. In his view the suit had universal acceptance, reach and influence like nothing else, although, “it arrived through a series of accidents, mistakes, misinterpretations, good intentions, conventions and slovenliness, all of it growing out of radicalism”. Creativity and innovation combined with longstanding values of perfect form and fitness have adapted the suit’s heritage in a subtle and clever manner according to Christopher Breward, author of The Suit: Form, Function and Style. A Savile Row suit, which in the past was considered to be the exclusive desire of the rich and famous, has recently come to the attention of fashion conscious men of all means. It is not surprising that more retailers are offering the bespoke suit option alongside off-the-peg merchandise. Jack Michael Menswear, an independent retailer established in 1983, has been offering classic and contemporary made-to-measure suits for many years. The proprietors have a legacy in tailoring and a passion for retailing classic and contemporary collections of stylish ready-to-wear and bespoke clothing for discerning men. Their forefathers ran the Suitable Tailoring House in East Africa, where the tradition was to hand stitch men’s suits to achieve perfection in madeto-measure styling. With Jack Michael the process of acquiring a Savile Row quality suit is straightforward. They devote time listening to what you are looking for in a suit, the occasion at which it is to be worn and what will give you most pleasure in wearing it. You will be carefully guided on key elements and choices available to create a great made-to-measure suit. And there is a good deal of opportunity for you to create your signature outfits because these days there is a lot of variety on offer as explained below. Fabric – wool, mohair, silk, gabardine, cashmere, tweed, flannel, cotton, linen, or velvet, all of which offer varying degrees breathability, weight, strength, softness, and comfort. Jacket shape and style – sack, structured or fitted silhouette; notch, peak or shawl lapels or the modern stand-up collar; soft versus roped shoulders; single- or double-breasted; number of jacket buttons including those on the cuff; patch, ticket, angled, flap or jetted pockets; lapel buttonhole, satin lapels or fine piping; unlined, half-lined or fully lined; ventless, single or double vent and the jacket length. The shape and style of the jacket has to complement your body shape so as to be elegant. Trouser cut – straight round versus fishtail; pleats or no pleats; the rise; strap and buckle or elastic and button hip finishing; belt loops or side buttons; trouser width from knee to bottom; turn-ups or not; trouser length and in-seam with no break or half break. The trouser cut has to be just right for comfort and styling. Waistcoat – this is a classic addition to suits for sharpness and versatility on formal occasions with the choice of six or seven button closure with two welt pockets and a pointed front versus peak lapels, with a square cut bottom and a breast pocket. Colour and pattern – the choices here can be explored to your heart’s content and your selection can show off your personal flair, exude confidence and make a statement. These days jacquard mini patterns are a popular choice for suit jackets designed for weddings and party wear. Shirt and accessories – a well-manufactured shirt can be combined with a carefully chosen tie, tie clip and cufflinks. In addition to a pocket square for the jacket, a smart pair of shoes with a matching leather belt will add extra class. At Jack Michael you will be guided to make strategic choices to create an enviable collection of elegant suits for regular and occasional wear, including indo-western outfits and ethnic sherwanis. Everything comes together beautifully when the fit is perfect and for this they take precise measurements. Final adjustments are taken care of within 48 hours once the suit is ready, which usually takes six to eight weeks to make. Jack Michael Menswear offers a winning combination of fine quality men’s suits and accessories with a personalised service that represents excellent value for money. They have loyal customers in the UK and overseas and they are often approached to supply men’s clothing for award ceremonies, fashion shows, television dramas and movies such as Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice and Keith Lemon: The Film. Whether you are looking for a stylish outfit for a special occasion or an impromptu night out, business attire or smart casual wear, at Jack Michael Menswear you will find an incredible collection of off-the-peg and made-tomeasure suit choices.

The connoisseur of luxury bridal and eveningwear shows her latest collection at The Dorchester

O

n Sunday 26th of February Caroline hosted an exclusive salon-style show at The Dorchester. Guests enjoyed champagne afternoon tea whilst getting an exclusive look at the designer’s latest bridal and eveningwear collections. As well as the breath-taking gowns, brides-to-be had the chance to meet Caroline herself and talk to her about their weddings as she gave them insider tips and ideas on how to create a truly fabulous day. Guests also enjoyed meeting Caroline’s favourite wedding industry experts, these included; shoe designer Freya Rose, wedding planner by Bruce Russell, Scott Dunn luxury travel, Bobbi Brown, hairdresser Michael Van Clarke, Duttson Rocks diamonds, Inwater Flowers, Leeming Brothers stationery and Rupa Photography. During the afternoon Caroline debuted her latest evening wear range available exclusively at the flagship store. The show stopping gowns featured exquisite beading and delicate laces combined with the finest silks and crepes a true testament of Castigliano’s unique ability to a cut and construct couture gowns. At a recent meeting with Caroline, we talked about her career in bridal spanning over 25 years. Growing up, everything in my life was related to the crafts. My mother taught me to sew when I was five years old and by the time I was ten I was making clothes for myself. This was the best training you could ever have. Having started her career as a child actress, Caroline turned her ambitions to a career in design at the age of twenty-two and launched Survival Kit, a kit of sportswear and dumbbells to travel with, they were high fashion and bright colours. She flew to New York and sold it Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus. Before she knew it, she was living in Miami designing and manufacturing active sportswear. Once I knew my career was going to be design focussed I decided to really consider where my talents lay and it didn’t take long to realise it was in wedding dresses! So, began the brand Caroline Castigliano, the first store launched in Surrey in 1991, specialising in classical understated, yet contemporary bridal gowns. Today Caroline’s collections are available around the world in exclusive stores. In the UK the Castigliano flagship store is in Knightsbridge a stone’s throw away from Harrods, where brides in the know travel to so they can order their bridal gown. Along with an exclusive collection of bridal and evening gowns the flagship store offers a bespoke service as well as a couture service. Prices range from £3500 – £7000 for the collection. Customised gowns start from £4500 and couture gowns from £15000.

Here are my top tips to help guide you towards glowing, radiant skin: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen

Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin ageing and skin cancer. UV damage replaces your skin’s natural glow with dryness, discoloration and, eventually, wrinkles. Use a minimum of SPF30 daily, reapplying regularly. SPF in make-up doesn’t give the protection you need. Time

Tailor-make your skincare

Your skincare should be as unique as you are, with ingredients tailored to your specific needs. Hydroxy acids containing salicylic acid suit oily or acne-prone skin to gently exfoliate and prevent blocked pores. For dry skin, hyaluronic acid, nature’s own plumper, draws water to hydrate and give a healthy glow. Hydrate

Dehydration causes dry skin, fine lines and blemishes to appear. Drink small amounts of water regularly throughout the day. Aim to cut down on sugar, coffee and alcohol and get more sleep. Alcohol dehydrates, and long-term overuse causes inflammation, which presents as facial redness and rosacea. Research

Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring a safe treatment. Knowledge of anatomy and technical delivery is crucial but most important is your actual consultation, facial assessment and mutually agreed treatment plan. Injectables

The most skilled practitioners can sympathetically restore and rejuvenate your face in a subtle and balanced way. With a comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy, they can assess and treat your face as a whole, rather than simply “filling lines”. The desired result is a healthy, refreshed glow – like after a good night’s sleep or a holiday – not to dramatically change the way you look. Body Contouring

Exercise and diet are always the best starting points. If you need a little extra help, there are a range of body contouring and fat reduction devices available. Ask about independently verified clinical data. FDA-approval is generally considered the world’s most stringent authority for approving medical devices. Cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals tend to have higher concentrations of active ingredients vs high street products. These have been clinically tested to improve conditions such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation. Ideally you should start using these products 3-6 months in advance and avoid introducing any new products in the fortnight before to minimise the chance of any reaction.

Beautiful, healthy skin isn’t a miracle, it requires time and commitment. S-Thetics Medical Aesthetic Clinic Marlborough House, 45 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1LZ P. 01494 670 990 E. info@sthetics.co.uk www.sthetics.co.uk

e were lucky to be invited to dine at Sindhu by Atul Kochhar in the Macdonald Compleat Angler hotel in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. Atul, the first chef to win a Michelin Star for his Indian cuisine, has produced a very innovative and exotic menu which should impress even the most discerning diner with its twist on Indian fare! The taster menu was a choice at £65 per person or £120 (with pairing wines) but we opted for the à la carte. With so many exciting and varied dishes on offer on this menu, it proved difficult to know what to choose so the arrival of a selection of mini poppadoms and chutneys – presented in a small wooden box to tempt the tastebuds – was a nice surprise. The amuse bouche, a delicate pumpkin soup served in a small coffee cup sprinked with cumin, was a delicious way to start the meal. We chose a South African Cannonberg Cabernet Sauvignon Western Cape which proved a perfect accompaniment to the food. We opted for the Tandoori Ratan (for two) which consisted of tadoor grilled saffron prawns, sea bass, basil chicken tikka and lamb seekh kebab which were all cooked to perfection. A lime sorbet then arrived to cleanse the palate before our next course. The main course of Lamb Chettinad (tadoor grilled lamb cutlets) served with polenta was an excellent choice as was the delicately flavoured tender Kori Gassi (free range supreme of chicken) which was served with cauliflower pakora and a coconut and coriander sauce. We shared a basket of cheese and coriander Kulcha and the side dish of Potato Keerai Masiyal (puréed spinach, chilli, ginger and browned garlic) which again was cooked to perfection and all complemented the main dishes perfectly. After a suitable interval we ordered dessert – the blueberry Bhapa Doi (yoghurt cheese cake with raspberry) which I can only say was sublime, accompanied by a glass of delicious Taittinger Prestige Rosé champagne... Atul brings his unique talent to this restaurant, and the inspired Indian cooking with a twist, excellent service and such a beautiful setting all make for a most enjoyable and memorable experience.

Decorating small spaces

any of us are inclined to opt for a traditional white to give an illusion of space, but this can create a small, dull room lacking imaginative flair. Charlotte Cosby, head of creative at craftsmen in paint and paper, Farrow & Ball, has shared her top tips for decorating small rooms and bringing the walls within to life. “Before painting your room it’s important to consider the amount of natural light and the direction the room faces, as this will have a significant impact on the appearance of each colour,” says Farrow & Ball’s Charlotte Cosby. She adds: “We often think the only way to create light and space in a small room is to paint it crisp white, but try using an off-white for a softer, more interesting alternative. Warm, yellow toned neutrals such as White Tie or Matchstick are best for reflecting light. “For those who wish to be bolder with their colour choice, then strong colours often soften a room and are the perfect distraction from its size and shape. Using our key colours for spring/summer Radicchio or Studio Green can help create an inviting retreat, while adding impact and depth to a room. “Using a single colour in a room is a clever way to create more space. With no point of reference and without contrasts, you’re less aware of where things stop and start. Try applying just one colour such as Vardo or Pitch Blue over the picture rail and up onto the ceiling to make the room feel higher and give an illusion of loftiness. “If you’re hoping to use two colours in your room, consider choosing a darker shade for your woodwork to accent the scheme. By brushing a paler colour onto the largest wall space, you’ll create a brighter feel, while the darker trim gives you a very sophisticated, elegant look. We’ve found that when skirting boards are very dark, it makes everything above them look lighter and airier. Try Mahogany, Railings or Mouse’s Back for a contemporary touch. “Painting your own dado is another brilliant way of creating a more spacious feel with just two colours. Try painting the bottom half of the wall with darker shades such as Railings or Blue Ground to really anchor the room. By brushing on a lighter paint such as Purbeck Stone or Ammonite above, you’ll find the paler colour of the wall will then flow into the ceiling to help delineate your small space. “It’s worth remembering that it can be just as effective to embrace the darkness of a small room by using strong colours such as Pelt or Brinjal to create a dramatic, intimate feel. Cloakrooms and powder rooms offer the perfect opportunity to inject bold colour without committing to larger, more lived-in rooms in the home.” Renowned for its depth of colour and rich pigments, each of Farrow & Ball’s 132 paints respond extraordinarily to the changes of light throughout each day to create a uniquely beautiful look in spaces both large and small.

When Irish Eyes are Smiling

M

arch 17th belongs to the Irish. It is St Patrick’s Day and like other major cities in the world, London celebrates in style. For the past 15 years, the office of the Mayor of London has organised a parade of pageantry, floats and marching bands. This year is no exception. It will assemble at midday in Piccadilly on the 19th March, and meander via Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square towards Whitehall. The theme for this year is ‘World of Dance’. The day will culminate with a festival of Irish dancers, singers and musicians in Trafalgar Square. An Irish street food market, craft beer tent and tea tent will enhance the experience. St Patrick’s Day is no longer just a day of celebration. It is a major event celebrating Ireland’s vibrant culture. Festivities start on March 17th and run for three days. London landmarks will indeed turn green. This year City Hall and Heron Tower will be illuminated alongside The London Eye, Nelson’s Column and Selfridges. It is a time for the ‘wearing of the green’, painting shamrocks on faces and tying up your young daughter’s hair with emerald green ribbons and bows. Everyone seems to want to be a little bit Irish for a day or two or even three! Those who are Irish are proud to be so. It is a celebration of conviviality and cheer. There are events planned throughout the city. For the second year in a row, the Irish Embassy will be working with Transport for London to bring a flavour of the occasion to the Underground. Commuters on the Victoria, Waterloo, Tottenham Court Road and Covent Garden tube will be greeted by Irish themed musical performances and poetry. Family Treasure Trails are planned featuring clues from Irish characters encountered along the way. An Irish Walking Tour will take place each day. There are Irish films to see and Irish art shows to visit. In collaboration with The Greater London Authority, Irish Film London will deliver three days of Irish film and animation. Father and son artists, John B and Lorcan Vallely, are exhibiting at City Hall. In Camden, there is a St Patrick’s Day Tea Dance at the London Irish Centre. In the evening, the Irish folk group, Kila, play. The Mayor’s Festival will also team up with Camden Market to offer a new family focussed music, art and folk festival. There are balls and parties to attend and if all this isn’t enough you can always ‘drown the shamrock’ in one of the many pubs. A pint of the black stuff is always welcome as is a hot whiskey, especially if the day is cold. It warms you from the inside out.

Why every UK homeowner should know about Permitted Development Rights

n England Permitted Development Rights (often referred to as “PD” Rights) where they are still in force, or not already all used up, allow UK homeowners to improve and extend their homes without the need to seek a specific planning permission. However, don’t get too excited, as many more modern properties have had their PD Rights withdrawn retrospectively either by their local council or by the developer who built their home in a deal done by them with your local Planning Department in order for them to be able to build more houses on the same site. Also previous owners have sometimes already extended a property to the maximum allowed under Permitted Development. For example semidetached and terraced houses can put a conservatory on the rear of their homes with a projection from the rear wall of up to 3m if the PD rights are intact. If not, then a planning application will be required before one can be legally built. Before even replacing windows, doors, adding a porch, conservatory or an extension, it is wise to check that you can do so on your particular property even if you own it outright. For example if your property is a flat in a residential block of flats or in a conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty, or is a listed building, you are not legally permitted to replace any windows or doors or add any structure without first obtaining planning permission. This may come as a bit of a shock to flat owners, as even if their management company organise the replacement windows, they are not allowed to do so without getting planning approval from the local council first. However UK homeowners (excluding flat owners unfortunately) can perform certain types of work without needing to apply for planning permission. These are called “permitted development rights”. They derive from a general planning permission granted not by the local authority but by the British Parliament. Sadly, as just mentioned, the permitted development rights which apply to many common projects for houses do not apply to flats, maisonettes or other buildings. Similarly, commercial properties have different permitted development rights to dwellings. In some areas of the country, known generally as ‘designated areas’, permitted development rights are more restricted, such as in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or a World Heritage Site or in a Conservation Area. If this is the case for your property you will need to apply for planning permission for certain types of work which do not need an application in other areas. There are also different additional requirements if the property is a listed building. The UK Government’s Planning Portal’s general advice is that you should contact your local planning authority and discuss your proposal before any work begins. This may or may not be a free service. Your local authority will be able to inform you of any reason why the development may not be permitted and if you need to apply for planning permission for all or part of the work. Sometimes local authorities require written submissions before being prepared even to look at a potential project, and many now charge a fee to ask them such questions. It is also worth noting that your local planning authority may have removed some of your permitted development rights by issuing an ‘Article 4’ direction. This will mean that you have to submit a planning application for work which normally does not need one (as is the case in some areas of Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire for example). Article 4 directions are made when the character of an area of acknowledged importance would be threatened by over development. They are most common in conservation areas. You will probably know if your property is affected by such a direction, but do check with your local planning authority if you are not sure.

101 the riverside journals

Kate will be appearing at RHS Chelsea Flower Shower 2017 with her garden ‘City Living’

his was a garden that had been originally installed 25 years previously and it really hadn’t aged well. The whole area looked tired and run down and showcased a really unattractive terracotta flooring with trellis hung all over the place. With the exception of some lovely Birch trees in the corner from that era, everything was to be gutted and completely redesigned… Four children, two adults and a large dog all had to be accommodated in the space whilst still leaving room to seat at least eight people plus an outdoor sofa set for the same number of people. The garden is around 11 metres x 7 metres and is also used as a functioning family garden. As you can imagine, blending so many elements whilst combining style with practicality in such a small space was quite a challenge. The first design step was to decide on what flooring to use and then go from there. We eventually settled on eco decking and a beautiful Jura limestone which was laid using an exterior tile grout extremely neatly! The limestone flooring was then carried up the side of a sleek white pebble water feature which flows almost silently over a stone edge and into a cobble recirculating pool. A beautiful bio-ethanol outdoor fireplace with a stacked top designed to represent the world-famous step pyramid at Saqqara was installed at the client’s request. The fireplace is situated near the eco decking and accessorised with some stylish outdoor sofas in a contrasting palette of darks and creams, designed for all season use. (The cushions do need to be taken inside in inclement weather but the rest of the furniture is good to stay all year.) The dining table was brought in after the initial install and is from The Modern Garden Company, very sleek and minimal looking. The clients are a large family of six and use the dining area regularly. Two large Silver Birch were the only plants of merit already in the garden and these were retained in a planter of similar size. This planter then led on to the water feature. Pleached Ligustrum trees delineate the space and are underplanted with Nandina Domestica and Heuchera for an all-year-round effect. Uplighting was used with certain plants and underneath the benches to softly illuminate the area and throw off striking shadows around the space.

A wealth of Art & Antiques in the Heart of England

The CADA Menagerie

at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery

n April the gallery will exhibit an extraordinary nearly theatrical exhibition with marble bust sculptures exploring the fragility and visceral presence of the human body by the Belgium-based Iraqi sculptor Athar, together with carefully hand-dyed textiles and foraged natural pigments by Norwegian artist Hanne Friis. Athar gives shape to his subjects’ innermost thoughts, fears, agonies and suffering by distorting his sculptures through a variety of techniques, including carving, sandblasting, acid erosion and shooting. The distortions of stone depict the distortions of an internally tormented spirit, vulnerable to the violence of life. For the artist, a perfect body “is an unsuitable reflection of a person’s physical and psychological fragility”. Creating tactile sculptures, Friis carefully hand dyes textiles with pigments she has collected from natural materials she has foraged from the Norwegian landscape and her surroundings, such as lichen, birch bark, mushrooms, pinecones and other plants. This process, while time-consuming, imbues the fabric with soft, almost otherworldly, yet fundamentally organic, colours. She then painstakingly begins to fold and bunch the fabric by sewing with a tiny needle. Nearing five years old, the gallery is getting a great recognition for showing international artists in the South West London Gallery. Kristin Hjellegjerde has from the beginning had a great desire to create a platform through which international artists could showcase cutting edge and innovative work to the world.

his year’s theme is The CADA Menagerie and art and antiques depicting animals, amongst other rare and unique works will be shown by 30 dealers, representing some of the finest art and antiques the country has to offer. English pottery expert John Howard will exhibit some wonderful examples of pottery depicting animals. John says: ‘representation of animals in pottery grew significantly in the 18th and early 19th centuries, fuelled by an expanding population and the pottery production revolution in Staffordshire’. Amongst the many items John will be showing is a figure of a majestic lion with his paws resting on a globe, representing patriotic pride whilst offering decorative appeal. (image 1). From mammals and birds to reptiles and insects, the world of animals has inspired some of the most memorable jewels in history. A beautifully styled magnificent bee brooch, (image 2) pavé set with diamonds and cornflower blue sapphires will be exhibited by Howards Jewellers. Trinity House Paintings, specialists in Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Modern British and 19th century work who have premises in New York, London as well as the Cotswolds, will bring After the Race, (image 3) by Sir Alfred Munnings, known especially for his horse paintings. He was at the height of his popularity in the interwar years, where he cut a figure in fashionable society and was often invited to grand country houses to paint the owners with their horses. It is likely that After the Race depicts a horse at Newbury during the late 1920s/early 1930s. All works are for sale, with prices ranging from £100 – £100,000++. The Glass of the Architects The history of glassmaking in Austria from 1900 to 1937

109 the riverside journals

P

ublished in collaboration with the MAK Vienna and “Le Stanze Del Vetro”, this volume presents over 300 works from the collection of the MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art in Vienna, as well as from private collections. The Glass of the Architects is the first publication to focus on the history of glassmaking in Austria from 1900 to 1937, a period spanning the last decades of the AustroHungarian Empire to the First Republic. In the early 20th century, a group of young architects, designers and fine arts and architecture students developed a special interest in the process of glassmaking. Many of them went on to win fame as leading figures in Viennese Modernism: Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Leopold Bauer, Otto Prutscher, Oskar Strnad, Oswald Haerdtl and Adolf Loos. These figures worked with the furnaces in order to gain a thorough understanding of the material, paving the way for the first pioneering developments in 20th-century glass production. This collaboration between architects and designers, along with the resulting innovations in production methods, created the distinctive style of Viennese Glass as found in new projects such as the Wiener Werkstätte or the Austrian Werkbund. Art and architecture in Vienna at this time saw an explicit change in the approach towards the use of material. While the period of Historicism had fostered the reuse of former styles and the copying and imitation of decoration and material, this young generation of architects and designers set out in search of a new purity and originality of design, form and material. Strongly influenced by international reformation movements in England, France and Belgium, they achieved the establishment of what was to become a Viennese style within the Modern Movement. Glass is a particularly fitting example to illustrate Viennese Modernism’s quest for a unity of the arts that puts the so-called “low” applied art, among them glass objects for actual use, at the same level as “high” fine art. The utilitarian nature of many glass objects did not limit, but in many cases spurred, the breathtaking creativity of the architects—an impressive number of the objects presented look like miniature buildings! In keeping with the Vienna Secession’s and Wiener Werkstätte’s philosophy, objects originally destined for daily use can easily transcend into fine art but equally lend themselves to contemplation while they are still in use as applied art objects. It is not the boundaries between disciplines that matter but the beauty radiating within, and emanating from, these precious objects, irrespective of their being fine or applied art or both.

Henley Festival CEO Charlotte Geeves

chats with Lorraine Sutherland

With the line-up for the Henley Festival 2017 being announced this month we are really grateful to the CEO, Charlotte Geeves, for taking some time out from her busy schedule to talk to our journalist. I’ve never been to the Henley Festival so I’m really interested to know more about it. How long have you been the CEO? For just over two years, 2017 will be my third festival. Before this I worked with the Wildscreen Film Festival and the Salisbury International Arts Festival but working as the CEO for the Henley Festival is my dream job. What makes Henley Festival so unique and special? First of all it must be the location and the intimacy it offers. We cater for 4,400 seats for the floating stage, which is such a unique experience for the audience to be so close to the performers. We are also able to attract a unique profile of musicians and artists offering a wonderful range of work from comedy, street theatre, 2D and 3D art galleries including large-scale sculptures Our dining opportunities are also very special, there are formal restaurants and some more relaxed pop-ups. I’ve heard that some people set up to eat in the car park – is this true? Yes and it really adds to the flavour of the Henley experience. You’ll see people picnicking and others set up with decorated tables and caterers. It really is a spectacle in itself. How does the dress code work? There is a black tie dress code for every day except Sunday. In the early evening you see some beautiful dresses and men in shirts and ties and then as the evening becomes a little chillier the jackets go on and shawls come out. Footwear can be more challenging. You do see some very smart suits and gowns and then a selection of wellies, but it all adds to the uniqueness of the festival. How do you choose the acts? We always start a year in advance; right now we are working on the 2018 line-up. We have a great Artistic Director, Stewart Collins, and as we are a charity we have a Board of Trustees some of whom work within the music industry. We are lucky to have good relationships with some agents so we can plan ahead and know who is going to be available. How do you get the balance between art, comedy and music? We know our demographic is 30- to 70-year-olds and this is a huge range but it is mostly an adult audience, except for on the Sunday. Comedy is less age specific but the music needs to offer something for everyone. Do you think you could replicate the Henley Festival somewhere else? No, I don’t because it’s so unique – especially the setting. The backdrop is beautiful. The festival is set on the river as much as it is on the land. Henley has such as large boating community that they are very much part of the festival. It all adds to the magic. Do you think it’s the guests or the organisers that make the festival so successful? Definitely the guests, the festival goers are key to everything. We organise the festival for them not for ourselves. The artists also really enjoy it. Elton John said he loved it last year because the audience was so brilliant. What top three tips would you give your younger less experienced self when organising your first festival? Gosh, that’s something to think about – I think first would be know your audience.. Pricing is also very important – this year prices range from £45 to £170 so there should be something for everyone. The third thing is the British weather. We have to make sure we have enough areas so people would be comfortable if the weather is bad and make sure that everyone still had a good time. I really like your answers to that question. It is very clear that you have a real focus on the audience and background in and love of the arts rather than being just a party organiser. Yes, I believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the arts across the board. Music is perhaps the most accessible of genres. Music is so enriching. My background is in the subsidised art sector but I am really enjoying making the festival as accessible as possible.

Charlotte was lovely to talk to and just like her vision for the festival she was so friendly and accessible. Her passion for the arts and Henley Festival really came through and she has certainly inspired me to go along for two nights. Thank you, Charlotte.

What would be your top tip to the festival goers this year? I would say that it would be to go twice on two different nights. They don’t have to be consecutive nights. On the first night you could focus on the floating stage and enjoy both the early evening and later headline act. Then on the second day you could buy a general admission ticket and spend time going to see everything else. Visit Ronnie Scott’s All stars, some of the art exhibitors, eat and drink at your leisure, enjoy a comedy show and visit the Bedouin tent early on in the evening and then some world music later. Going on two nights means you won’t miss out on anything and you can relax and enjoy the whole festival.

ublin, Ireland’s capital city, is home to the Phoenix Park, one of the largest public parks in Europe. Boasting over 1,750 acres it has many attractions, not least the wild roaming Fallow Deer. The best way to view all that it offers is by bike. Phoenix Park Bikes, located at the Park Gate Entrance, hire bikes, including tandems, at an hourly or daily rate. Peddling through the park is a peaceful and inspiring way to spend a few hours. Cycling is an efficient way to negotiate a city so it is not surprising that bike share schemes are gaining in popularity. Dublin’s scheme is purported to be one of the most successful bike share schemes in the world! It has proved so successful that it now runs in other Irish cities; Galway, Limerick and Cork. Escape the cities and Ireland unfolds before you; stunning scenery, a wild rugged coastline, remote and peaceful roads, light traffic, fields of grazing cattle, seductive sandy beaches and attractive seaside towns. Cycling with the wind in your back, the vistas encountered can take your breath away. Unfortunately, an unexpected easterly can do the same as can inclement weather. Effective waterproofs are a necessity as is sun cream. Ireland can experience all the seasons in one day, adding to its beauty. Exploring Ireland by bike has long held an attraction for the lone cyclist. The solitude of the day, punctuated by meetings with likeminded cyclists, appeal as do conversational evenings in local pubs. Spontaneous decisions to catch a boat and spend a day traversing one of the islands adds to the allure. If, however, independent cycling is not for you, there is the option of a bike tour. Luggage is transported to chosen accommodation along the designated route leaving the cyclist free to travel unburdened. From the faint-hearted novice cyclists to the ardent MAMIL (middle aged men in Lycra) there is a tour to suit. The Cycling Ireland App removes the necessity for map consultation at least across 100 routes. It also provides local information so locating lunch, if needs be, should not prove problematic. Cycling trails include The Kingfisher Trail, covering counties in the Republic of Ireland and across the border to Northern Ireland and The Great Western Greenway. The latter is the longest off road cycling trail in the Republic, and follows the route of the Westport to Achill railway. It is traffic free. For those who like a challenge, there is always An Post Ras. This is an annual eight-day stage race around Ireland. Ireland’s finest amateur riders compete against domestic and international professionals. Returning to Donegal this year from May 21st to the 28th, it is a challenging route. A test for any cyclist whatever their style. Whether competing or observing, it is guaranteed to set the heart racing.
