The Cactus League Welcomes You! n behalf of the Cactus League, welcome to the beautiful state of Arizona and the 2019 Spring Training season. We are grateful to the Major League Baseball fans flocking to ballparks across Maricopa County this spring, especially our out-of-state visitors. (Don’t forget the sunscreen!)Visitors and residents alike know that there is no place like Arizona in the spring. Arizona’s 15 Cactus League clubs drew a total of 1,796,403 fans last season. With 6 out of 10 fans traveling from out of state, the Cactus League has become a significant tourism driver in Arizona. The spinning turnstiles are proof that the Cactus League is big business in Arizona. In 2018, the Cactus League generated $644 million in economic impact, according to a study by Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business. The study also found that the Cactus League created 6,439 annual jobs paying $224.6 million and directly generated a total of $31.9 million in taxes for the state ($24.2 million) and local governments ($7.7 million). The Cactus League is a baseball paradise. With all 10 ballparks within an hour of each other, fans can easily follow their favorite teams on the road and sample the league’s unique ballparks. And visitors will discover plenty of things to do before and after the game; the Valley of the Sun offers first-class hotels, restaurants and nightlife as well as outdoor recreation for every fitness level. It’s easy to see why generations of baseball fans have fallen in love with spring training in Arizona. With the help of numerous booster organizations and host municipalities, the Cactus League works to provide the best possible experience for the teams and their fans. The booster groups collectively contribute nearly 90,000 volunteer hours to help you enjoy your day at the ballpark — please take a moment and say hello, because it means the world to these friendly, community-minded folks. I also wish to thank Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority for providing the leadership to ensure that our facilities remain state-of-the-art. Thank you for your support of the Cactus League. I hope that you will treasure your memories of the Grand Canyon State. Play Ball!

MANAGER PROFILE

Chris Woodward Texas Rangers

Chris Woodward was officially announced as the 19th full-time manager in Texas Rangers history on November 3, 2018, and he was introduced at a press conference two days later at Globe Life Park in Arlington. He received a three-year contract covering 2019-2021 that included a club option for the 2022 season. The Covina, California native hails from same hometown as Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Famer Michael Young. The pair knew each other and lived in close proximity at one point. Woodward spent the last three seasons as third base and infield coach on Dave Roberts’ staff with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In that span, the Dodgers compiled a .589 (287-200) regular season winning percentage while capturing the N.L. West Division title all three seasons, advancing to the World Series in 2017 and 2018. Prior to joining the Dodgers, Woodward was the first base and infield coach for the Seattle Mariners in 2014-15. He began his coaching career as Seattle’s minor league infield coordinator in 2013 and was promoted to the Major League staff late in that season. He started 2014 as Seattle’s infield coach before assuming first base coaching duties early in the season. Woodward managed New Zealand in the 2017 World Baseball Classic qualification tournament in Australia in 2016 with a 1-2 record. He was a coach for the New Zealand squad in the 2013 WBC qualification. The former infielder spent all or parts of 12 seasons in the Majors with Toronto (1999-2004; 2011); New York Mets (2005-06); Atlanta (2007); Seattle (2009-10), and Boston (2009), hitting .239 with 33 homers and 191 RBI in 659 games. He played every position except pitcher and catcher in his MLB career. Woodward made his Major League debut with the Jays on June 7, 1999 at New York’s Shea Stadium, posting a sac fly in his first plate appearance and an RBI single off Orel Hershiser in his first at-bat. He spent much of the 2002-04 seasons as Toronto’s starting shortstop, including Opening Day starts in 2003 and 2004. Woodward hit a career-high three home runs on August 7, 2002 vs. Seattle, the lone multi-homer game of his career, becoming the 15th shortstop in MLB history to hit 3 HR in a game. The right-handed batter hit .276 with 13 homers and 45 RBI with the Blue Jays in 2002 and .261 in a career-best 104 games the following season. He split time between the majors and minors from 2009-11 and concluded his pro career with Triple-A Las Vegas in the Toronto organization in 2012 Woodward was selected by Toronto in the 54th round of the 1994 MLB Draft and signed by Blue Jays scout Bill Moore. He starred in baseball at Northview High School in Covina, CA, where he also played football. Woodward then attended Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA, where he was named all-conference. This winter, Woodward was part of the Rangers Winter Caravan trip to San Antonio, Austin, and Ft. Hood in January. He now lives in Chandler, AZ with his wife Erin and three children daughter Sophie and sons Mason and Grady. Woodward earned a Bachelor’s Degree in business management from the University of Phoenix in 2012. S U R P R I S E S TA D I U M . C O M

Jose Leclerc Texas Rangers

A SPRING IN HIS STEP Jose Leclerc’s performance last spring paid off By T.R. Sullivan There are reasons to pay close attention in Spring Training. The six weeks in Arizona is more than just about pitchers and hitters getting ready for the regular season. Look closely and you can see signs of young players who have come to camp with a new attitude that underscores their determination and resolve to raise the level of their games. Rangers pitcher Jose Leclerc was a prime example, when the Rangers started getting an idea that he was a different pitcher than what they had seen previously. He was not expected to be on the Opening Day roster in 2018. The Rangers loved the talent but not the lack of control. A pitcher who averages 7.88 walks per nine innings does not generate a great deal of confidence from his bosses, and the Rangers told him at the end of the 2017 season that he needed to get better.

Little did they know how much Leclerc would take that to heart. Once Spring Training got underway, the Rangers could tell they had a different pitcher than the one who had trouble throwing strikes the year before. “Things got really challenging for him,” former Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. “It seemed like some of those things affected him. It challenged his confidence. He made a point during the winter to regain that confidence, and he came into Spring Training with a different look in his face and eyes. He has made a conscious effort to stay focused on throwing strikes, trusting his stuff and not overthrowing. “This kid did this all on his own.” What did Leclerc do? Two weeks before pitchers and catchers reported for Spring Training this year, Leclerc stood up on a stage in Arlington and accepted an award as the 2018 Rangers Pitcher of the Year. He was honored after pitching in 59 games and saving 12 with a 1.56 ERA. He allowed 3.75 hits and struck out 13.27 batters per nine innings. Oh yeah…the walks? Cut in half at 3.90 walks per nine innings. “I think last year I was thinking too much — ‘If I do bad, I’m going to Triple-A,’” Leclerc said. “I feel more confident and I feel with my fastball 18

more comfortable. I think that’s the key from last year. I threw the fastball and I didn’t know where I was throwing it, and the other pitch was crazy. If I can’t throw the fastball for a strike, they’re not going to swing at the off-speed. I think everything came together.” That’s how Leclerc overcame the adversity of 2017 and his maddening control problems. He may have been the biggest surprise on the Rangers pitching staff but maybe that could have been expected given where Leclerc came from. Adversity. Tough times? Hardship? That pretty much describes his upbringing in the Dominican Republic. When you grow up poor in a small town in the Dominican Republic, when your father walks out on the family when you’re a baby, when you go days without any food or shoes to wear, it’s almost impossible to dream about pitching in the Major Leagues. “We suffered a lot,” Leclerc said. “It was hard. Sometimes we would go to the park to play baseball and we wouldn’t have any food. We hadn’t eaten anything; when we came back, we would have nothing.” He owes it all to one lady, his mother Fiordaliza. She is the one who passed on her toughness to Leclerc and helped him rise from difficult cir-

S U R P R I S E S TA D I U M . C O M

cumstances to the Major Leagues. “My hero,” Leclerc said. “She was my everything. She had to do anything to support us. It wasn’t easy, especially if you are a woman. There was a lot of work she had to do for four kids. She had to work whatever she could do … she worked in different factories … clothes, shoes, whatever. … She also worked in the farms around the area, picking tobacco.” There is no welfare or public subsistence in Esperanza, a town of 42,000 in the Dominican Republic where Leclerc grew up. Leclerc and his family -- two sisters, a brother and a devoted mother -- were on their own. “Here, you can get help,” Leclerc said. “But in the Dominican, you don’t get help from anybody. Somebody might say one day, ‘Hey, you don’t have food? You’re having a bad day, OK.’ But money, it doesn’t happen. Me and my brother, we had to work. When we were 10 years old, we had to work on the farms, pick tobacco, bananas, a lot of things like that.” There is one thing known in the Dominican Republic. If you can play baseball, somebody is going to find you and get you in some kind of program that will allow you to get scouted by Major League teams. There was a local baseball coach in Esperanza named Nino Maizal who discovered Leclerc and recommended him to

local buscone Adolfo Burgos. Buscones in Latin America have an unsavory reputation, but Burgos took care of Leclerc and nurtured him at an academy in Santiago. Leclerc was only 15 at the time but soon attracted the attention of Major League scouts. The Rangers saw him at a tryout and ended up signing Leclerc for $90,000. “Just a guy who really competed,” Rangers assistant general manager Mike Daly said. “A really good arm with swing-and-miss secondary stuff. Once we signed him, it was obvious how much he loved baseball and had a great work ethic. He was really into baseball. We had a TV on at the academy and he was always watching baseball games.” The Rangers knew Leclerc had a chance to be special, but sometimes it doesn’t come as quickly as everybody hopes or expects. Sometimes clubs can’t help but wonder if it will ever happen for a player. The Rangers were wondering about Leclerc going into Spring Training last year. But they could see early on that this was a different pitcher than the previous year. It pays off to pay attention in Spring Training. T.R. Sullivan covers the Rangers for mlb.com

MANAGER PROFILE

Ned Yost

Kansas City Royals The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost returns for his 10th season with the Royals. He led Kansas City to its first World Series Championship in 30 years in 2015 as well as consecutive American League pennants in 2014 and 2015. Yost was named the 16th full-time manager in Kansas City Royals history on May 13, 2010. He signed a one-year extension with the club on Sept. 30, 2018 to return for the 2019 season. It marked the fifth extension he has signed with Kansas City, also signing a two-year extensions on July 31, 2010 (2011-12, with an option for 2013); Oct. 1, 2013 (2014-15); Jan. 13, 2015 (2016) and Feb. 17, 2016 (2017-18). He is the longest tenured skipper in Royals history, entering this season with a 687-736 record (.483) in 1,423 regular season games. That includes a 351-297 mark (.542) from 2013-16, which was the fifth-highest winning percentage in the Majors during that span. Yost passed Whitey Herzog (410 wins) to become the winningest manager in club history on June 18, 2015 with a 3-2 triumph over his former club, the Milwaukee Brewers, at Kauffman Stadium. In 2016, he collected his 1,000th managerial win on September 17, besting the White Sox, 3-2. He enters the 2018 season ranked sixth among active managers in games (2,220) and wins (1,086), while he’s 49th all-time in games and 52nd in victories. He has a .710 postseason winning percentage (22-9), which is tops among skippers that have managed at least 20 playoff contests. His 22 postseason victories are 24th all-time and rank fifth among active big league skippers, trailing only Bruce Bochy (44), Terry Francona (40), Joe Maddon (32) and Dave Roberts (23). He became the first manager in Major League history to win his first eight postseason games in 2014. Yost served as the manager of the American League All-Star teams at the 2015 and 2016 Midsummer Classic, leading the Junior Circuit to victories in both games. Prior to his time in Kansas City, Yost managed the Milwaukee Brewers beginning in 2003, before being relieved of his duties as manager on September 15, 2008. He compiled a 457-502 mark as the Brewers’ skipper. He turned the team around, leading Milwaukee to its first winning season (83-79) in 15 years in 2007, while the Brewers had a 83-67 record and were on their way to the National League Wild Card when he was dismissed in 2008. Before serving as a manager in Milwaukee, Yost spent 12 seasons on the Atlanta Braves’ coaching staff from 1991-2002. During that period, the Braves won their division every year except for 1994 when a Players’ Strike ended the season prematurely. With Atlanta, Yost served as the bullpen coach (1991-98) and third base coach (1999-2002) under Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox. He joined the Braves’ organization after retiring as a player following the 1987 season. Yost managed for three seasons in the Atlanta system at Sumter (Class A) in the South Atlantic League. As a player, Yost was selected in the first round (seventh overall) in the secondary phase of the 1974 Draft. He was acquired by Milwaukee from the Mets in the 1977 Rule 5 Draft and made his Major League debut with the Brewers in 1980. He played in parts of six Major League seasons with Milwaukee (1980-83), Texas (1984) and Montreal (1985), recording a career batting average of .212 with 15 doubles, four triples, 16 homers and 64 RBI in 219 games. He was a member of the Brewers’ 1982 American League Champion club and appeared in one World Series game against St. Louis that season, walking in his only plate appearance. Yost and his wife Deborah have four adult children: Jenny, Ned IV, Josh and Andrew as well as three grandchildren: Jordan, Everly and Amber Lin. Ned IV is a coach in the Brewers’ minor league system. He graduated from Dublin (Calif.) High School in 1972 and played baseball at Chabot Junior College in Heyward, Calif., before being drafted in 1974. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004 and earned the “Nice Guy Award” at the Red Smith Sports Award Banquet in Appleton, Wis. in 2005. His father (Ned, Sr.) was an All-American football player at Santa Rosa Junior College in California. An avid hunter and NASCAR fan, Yost wears uniform No. 3 in honor of his close friend, the late Dale Earnhardt. S U R P R I S E S TA D I U M . C O M

Whit Merrifield Kansas City Royals

AN VERNIGHT SUCCESS, SEVERAL YEARS IN THE MAKING Whit Merrifield Leads the Running Royals into 2019 By Nick Kappel, Coordinator Communications & Broadcasting One year before Whit Merrifield led the Majors in hits and stolen bases, he hit 19 home runs, more than any Royals second baseman not named Frank White. One year before that, he was promoted to the Majors – after parts of seven seasons in the minors – and recorded his first hit in his Major League debut vs. former Cy Young Award winner David Price. And a few years before that, he sat on a broken-down bus, stranded with his Double-A teammates in the middle of the night along the path of a 10-hour drive from Midland, Texas to Springdale, Ark. It was a scene, as a he described it, straight out of a horror film. S U R P R I S E S TA D I U M . C O M

35

It was dark. Players were tired on the heels of a long road trip. They scanned the landscape for help nearby, but nothing but abandoned warehouses surrounded them. It took more than an hour for a mechanic to arrive to their middle-of-nowhere location and repair the bus. But as the players took their seats to slumber their way through the remainder of the trip, another roadblock emerged: their driver had disappeared. Two hours passed. The sun had risen. The bus driver was eventually found, passed out behind a building. “He was tired, I guess,” Merrifield quipped. The team boarded the bus, and – finally – continued their trip home. Another game awaited them in Springdale that night. “There’s no sugar coating it,” Merrifield said. “[Being in the minors] sucks a lot of times.” Many years before his minor league career began – before he was a ninth-round pick by Kansas City – Merrifield was on a team of local 12 year olds. But he wasn’t among the best nine players on the team, according to the coach – Whit’s dad – so he didn’t play. “When you’re not playing for your dad, you know you’ve got some work to do,” Merrifield said. “I wasn’t blessed with the natural abilities – size, speed and strength – like a lot of the other guys. I knew I had to work harder than everyone else, and realizing that was a big mo36

ment for me.” Merrifield, now 30 and entering his fourth big league season, certainly paid his dues before arriving in Kansas City in May of 2016. “You look at his journey … he has become a star,” said manager Ned Yost. It hasn’t taken long for Merrifield to establish himself as a veteran leader on a young Royals club. In fact, he and Alex Gordon are the only two position players on the 40-man roster (entering Spring Training) who were born before 1990. Merrifield didn’t allow 2018 – the last year of his 20s – to slow him down. He set career highs across the board, and became the third player since 1945 to lead the Majors in both stolen bases (45) and hits (192), joining Ichiro Suzuki (2001) and Dee Gordon (2015). In doing so, he became just the third Royal to lead the Majors in hits, joining Willie Wilson (1980) and George Brett 1976, ’79) and just the second Royal to lead the Majors in steals, joining Wilson (1979). “It’s really special to get both titles,” Merrifield told reporters after last season’s final game. “To say I’ve done it more than anyone else in the league is really special. This is my last chance at the stolen base [title]. I don’t think [Adalberto Mondesi] is going to let 45 fly next year. He’ll have that by the All-Star break. Indeed, Mondesi – Merrifield’s double-play

S U R P R I S E S TA D I U M . C O M

partner – had 32 steals in just 75 games last season. He enters this spring projected as the Royals’ starting shortstop. But the Royals’ team speed doesn’t stop there. This offseason, the Royals added center fielder Billy Hamilton – who leads the Majors with 277 steals since his 2013 debut – and outfielder Terrance Gore – whose 27 career steals as a pinch-runner are most in the Majors since his 2014 debut. “The more speed, the better,” Merrifield told MLB.com this offseason. “It will help all of us offensively to have that much speed on the bases. All you have to do is distract the pitcher a little, and it will help the hitter. We’re going to have that all over the place [this] season.” Speed has been a calling card of the Royals since before their 2014 American League championship season. And although the burners of that club, such as Jarrod Dyson, Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain, have since moved on, the Royals have remained among the league’s best in base running. In 2018, they ranked fourth in the American League with 117 steals, just 18 behind the league leader. From 2013-16, they finished first, first, second and second. “The main thing is we have that speed now,” Yost said told reporters as December’s Winter Meetings. “We just didn’t have that speed [last year] that we did when we had Cain and [Dys-

on] and [Gore] and those type of little weapons that we had off our bench. So we definitely have them now, and that’s exactly what we wanted to get back to.” Another area in which the Royals have continued to excel is on defense. For a second straight year in 2018, Kansas City set its club record in fielding percentage with a .987 mark, percentage points above its 2017 clip. “We’ve been spoiled for years with Lorenzo Cain in center field,” Yost said. “Now having Billy roaming that ground from gap to gap out there, we’ve got Alex Gordon and plenty of great candidates in right field with [Brian Goodwin], with Jorge Soler, with [Jorge Bonifacio], with Brett Phillips. We’ll have a lot of opportunities to kind of mix and match and see what fits and what’s beneficial for us as a team. Merrifield’s ability to play several different positions – he was one of three Major Leaguers to start at least five games at more than five different positions last season – gives Yost flexibility in his lineup. The combination of speed and defense that Merrifield, Mondesi, Hamilton and others provide will be the core of the Royals’ strengths this season. “It gives us two things that show up every day – defense and speed,” Dayton Moore said. “We want a motion game.”
