FLAWLESSLY NATURAL Achieve an incredible everyday look with with easy step-by-step make-up guide

s

tep 1:: Prep your skin by cleansing and apply moisturiser to your face. Step 2:: Apply a primer to your skin. This will help even out your skin tone and provide a base for the make-up. Step 3:: Use concealer to neutralise any dark circles under the eyes, discolouration around the nose or any blemishes you’d like to disguise. Set the concealer with a translucent setting powder. Step 4:: Prevent eye-shadow from creasing by applying an eye primer to the lids of the eyes. Step 5:: Apply a light, neutral eye-shadow with a flat eye-shadow brush. Start by patting the eye-shadow over the lid, then work it up to the brow. Step 6:: Using a fluffy brush, softly blend a taupe eye-shadow into the crease of the eyelid.

Step 7:: Use a grey eye-shadow to line the upper lash line. This will define your lashes but keep your look natural. Step 8:: Apply a coat of black mascara to your eyelashes or if you have very fair skin, use a dark brown mascara instead. Step 9:: Apply a light foundation with a blending sponge. Start at the centre of the face and blend outwards. Set the foundation with setting powder. This will keep your make-up looking fresh all day. Step 10:: Gently blend a peach or apricot blush onto the apples of your cheeks in a circular motion. Step 11:: Line and fill in your lips with a lip liner close to your natural lip colour. Step 12:: Apply pawpaw lip balm to give your lips a natural, dewy look.

BEAUTY LIES UNMASKED W

HEN it comes to buying beauty and skincare products or services, it can be extremely overwhelming due to the vast amount of information available. It can be difficult to decipher between a company selling you a product they believe in and one who is simply chasing your money. So here at Style HQ we thought it would be fitting to unmask some of the common lies and misconceptions in the industry and help clear the haze when it comes to finding and purchasing the right products. A $200 FACE CREAM IS BETTER THAN A $50 ONE Well, it may be. But only if it has more expensive ingredients. Make sure your dollar is buying the face cream, not the multi-million ad campaign and attractive box, unless you like the box, of course. BOTOX CAN KILL YOU If it could, half of Hollywood would be dead. Botox does contain botulinum toxin but it is purified and diluted and thousands of times weaker than a lethal dose. YOU CAN GET RID OF CELLULITE If only. The truth is, nothing can be done to permanently eliminate it, no

For all your Hair & Beauty needs! ❖ Hair ❖ Beauty ❖ Make-up ❖ Pampering

matter what the cream/gel/spray claims. Cellulite is the combination of normal fat deposition and fibrous bands that connect deeper structures to the skin. When the amount of fat increases the fat bulges between the fibrous bands resulting in the dimpling of the skin that is referred to as cellulite. Cellulite may be minimised by improving muscular definition in specific areas. Or try using a self-tanner as camouflage. Dry skin brushing pre-shower or bath may also help improve circulation to the area so your body can get rid of trapped fat naturally. FOODS SUCH AS CHOCOLATES, LOLLIES AND CHIPS CAUSE ACNE Extensive studies show no evidence that specific foods cause acne. That said, a good, well-balanced diet is beneficial both to your health and skin. Make sure you include plenty of fish, for its anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing qualities, and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and see your skin glow. Try the Perricone Diet, which is based on plenty of oily fish that supply healthy fats.

KISS SUGAR GOODBYE Making the decision to rid your diet of sugar will work wonders for your health

W

hile the enemy for years has been fat, it turns out that the number one enemy in our diets is sugar. Making small changes to your diet will add up over time and before you know it, you’ll be consuming less kilojoules every day You can cut down on sugars by eating fewer sugary foods, such as sweets, cakes and biscuits, and drinking fewer sugary soft drinks. Sugars occur naturally in foods such as fruit and milk, but rest assured that even though these do contain sugar, they don’t need to be cut out of our diets. Sugars are also added to a wide range of foods such as sweets, cakes, biscuits, chocolate and some soft drinks and juice drinks. These are the sugary foods that we should aim to reduce in our diets. Evidence shows that most adults and children consume more sugar than is recommended as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Many foods that contain added sugars also contain lots of calories, so eating these foods often can contribute to you becoming overweight. Food and drinks that have a lot of added sugars contain calories, but often have few other nutrients. To eat a healthy, balanced diet we should eat these types of foods only occasionally and get the majority of our calories from other kinds of foods such as starchy foods and fruits and vegetables. Sugary foods and drinks can also cause tooth decay, especially if you eat them between meals. The longer the sugary food is in contact with the teeth, the more damage it can cause. The sugars found naturally in whole fruit are less likely to cause tooth decay, because the sugars are contained within the structure of the fruit. But when fruit is juiced or blended, the sugars are released. Once released these sugars can damage teeth, especially if fruit juice is consumed frequently. For a healthy, balanced diet, cut down on foods and drinks containing added sugars. These tips can help you cut down: 1:: Instead of sugary soft drinks and juice drinks, go for water or unsweetened fruit juice (remember to dilute these for children to further reduce the sugar).

2:: If you like soft drinks try diluting fruit juice with sparkling water. 3:: Swap cakes or biscuits for a piece of fruit. 4:: If you take sugar in hot drinks or add sugar to your breakfast cereal gradually reduce the amount until you can cut it out altogether, or try using a natural honey. 5:: Rather than spreading jam or honey on your toast try a low-fat spread, sliced banana or low-fat cream cheese instead. 6:: Check nutrition labels to help you pick the foods with less added sugar, or go for the low-sugar version. 7:: Try halving the sugar you use in your recipes— it works for most things except jam, meringues and ice-cream. 8:: Choose tins of fruit in juice or water rather than syrup. 9:: Choose wholegrain breakfast cereals, but not those coated with sugar or honey.

HEALTHY STARTS AT HOME Starting healthy habits for yor children from the outset will set them up for life

W

ITH school back in full swing, children are busy keeping their minds active. But due to the long periods of sitting at desks, they’re also likely to have reduced levels of exercise which can impact on their overall well-being. To help keep your kids healthy, the Heart Foundation is encouraging parents to look for opportunities to increase their kids’ activity as part of the school week. Healthy living manager for Heart Foundation Queensland Sheree Hughes said Australian children were among the most chauffeured in the world. “These days around 70 per cent of children are regularly driven to and from school, compared with 16% in 1970,” she said. “Our lives are busy and we are driving because we feel it will save time. “But small opportunities to walk or ride more often will help children to realise there are ways to travel other than in a car— walking or riding together is a great experience for parents and children to share.”

What to put in the kids’ lunch boxes is another dilemma that plagues parents, as they face more than 200 school lunches throughout the year. The Heart Foundation has some tips for keeping your child’s lunch box nutritious and getting young people outside and active. Top ideas for keeping school children active and healthy Pick a day you can walk to and from school together — even consider parking the car a little further from the school and walking for 10 minutes 1:: Cut up food so it is easy for little fingers to eat. 2:: Select comfortable school shoes that are great for walking, running and riding bicycles. 3:: Include a frozen water bottle— it will help keep lunch cool and provides an icy-cold drink. 4:: Plan a quick play at the local park on free afternoons. 5:: Plan ahead to avoid grabbing pre-packaged foods. 6:: Join your children in an after-school swim, ball game, hopscotch or skip.

FAREWELL YOUR DEBT With 2017 under-way, it can be overwhelming if 2016 finances are still haunting you

T

HE silly season might be over but the debt hangover is not for thousands of Australians who are expected to pay the price for festive splurges well into 2017. Roy Morgan research for the Salvation Army suggests 1.8 million people will take two to three months to pay off their Christmas credit card debt and 476,000 people will take six months or longer. Financial counselling services are responding to a spike in calls as post-Christmas bills roll in and families struggle to cover the cost of festive purchases put on plastic. The Salvation Army’s free financial counselling service, Moneycare, has reported a rise in demand over the holiday period while Financial Counselling Australia CEO Fiona Guthrie says the organisation expects an influx of calls this month. “At the start of the new year it becomes front of mind as the bills start to hit and you spent more than what you expected,” Ms Guthrie says. “It also coincides with children going back to school, which is often an expensive time for families.” Ms Guthrie’s advice to people struggling with debt is to act early. She says the first step is to stop using your card, look at what you owe and work out a strategy to tackle the debt. If you have more than one credit card, she advises paying off

the one with the highest interest rate or the smallest debt first. Ms Guthrie encourages people to ask for help if they need it, by contacting a financial counsellor or their credit provider to organise a repayment plan. She says consumers should be wary of deals spruiking a quick fix for their financial problems. Balance transfer offers also needed to be considered carefully unless people were extremely disciplined in paying it off during the interest-free period. “The risk is that you don’t close off your old card and at the end of your honeymoon period you’ve got debts on two cards,” she said. While many people under financial stress turn to payday loans and consumer leases, Moneycare financial counsellor Kristen Hartnett warns increasing levels of debt “will only exacerbate the problem”. Mrs Hartnett says financial counsellors are always a safer alternative. “A financial counsellor can advocate on your behalf and negotiate a payment plan with the people you owe money to,” she says. Phone the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 or visit ndh.org.au if you are struggling with debt. Make 2017 youor financially savvy year.

REDEFINING THE MODEL FOR NATURAL HEALTH CARE WHEN IT comes to naturopathic care – many in the remote communities of the Western Downs and South Burnett may feel at a loss when looking to source a practitioner. There is no denying the far-reaching benefits that can be gained from integrating naturopathic medicine into your lifestyle however, in the past one’s location has impeded access to this vital service. Thankfully, these days are now over. Dee the Naturopath has redefined the model to ensure the best possible health outcome for her clients, irrespective of their location "I am all too aware of the challenges faced by those in remote communities when it comes to seeking the services of a naturopath," Dee said. "My service is tailored to rural clientele." "Some may be available for consultation over email, whereas others may have no internet connection at all, so I also offer my services over the phone and post things via the mail." Dee’s commitment to her clientele is evident through her "stop-at-nothing" approach to ensure everyone throughout the entire Western Downs and South Burnett communities have access to her expert care. Dee is a fully qualified and registered naturopath and has worked in pharmacy and GP medical practices since 1997, which stands her in great stead to offer an integrated service that goes beyond the stock-standard naturopathic model.

"I am not "just a naturopath" and thanks to my extensive background working with GPs and in community pharmacy I tailor individualised health plans taking into consideration my clients prescribed medications. "I regularly write referrals and can also order pathology through Sullivan Nicolaides and QML and other specialist pathology laboratories without the need for a GP visit." Dee has an integrative and holistic approach to health which sees her assist people with chronic immune disorders, food intolerance testing, nutritional counselling as well as hormonal imbalances such as menopause, fertility and thyroid conditions and more. ACHIEVE HEAD-TURNING RACE DAY HAIR WE have all been there. Staring blankly into the mirror only a few days out from an important race day once we realise we nailed our dress, hat and shoe combo however, completely overlooked one of the most important elements of all; our hairstyle. Thankfully, Kerry Slee of Dalby’s Pure Hair & Beauty has capped off on all we need to know when it comes preparing our hair and deciding on a hairstyle for the next up and coming race day. To wash or not to wash? The jury is still out on whether to wash your hair the day before, or on the morning of, but most professionals recommend that day-old hair is best for styling. Freshly washed hair is dry and fluffy, whereas day-old hair contains natural oils which help it to mould and stay in place. Thin hair? Curl and tease. If you have thin hair you can still give the illusion of a voluminous up-style by curling and teasing your hair. Curl your hair, then tease it, placing individual strands up and securing them with bobby pins. Should you hide your hat elastic? It is not necessary to hide your elastic. You might want to be able to remove your fascinator after the competition and still have your fabulous hair-do in place. Also, it makes it 100x easier to travel to and from the races without having to have your car seat leaned all the way back because you can’t take your hat off! Getting out of the car once you arrive can be quite the struggle. Personally, I like to get my hairdresser to work my elastic into my hair-do, hiding it, as I think this looks neater. This also adds extra security by keeping my hat in place on windy days. I don’t think it would lose you points with judges if they could see your elastic, but it always looks so fabulous having a hat on your head that looks like it’s just floating there The Best Races Hairstyles with Fascinators Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s take a look at some of the most popular race day hairstyles. Some of these you’ve probably tried. Others will be new. As you go through the styles, I encourage you to pick one to try at your next race day. The Go-to Style | Donut Bun The donut bun is an easy and sleek hair style that can be mastered at home with the use of a hair donut accessory. I like to curl my hair first as I find it makes it easier to manoeuvre around the donut. 14

Style |

March 2017

Choose the size of the donut, depending on the length of your hair. Donut buns can be worn at any position on your head – high up, centre middle, down low or off to one side; it depends on where your millinery will sit. So always try your fascinator on first and then decide on the position of your bun. Teasing the hair as you place it around the donut creates a bigger bun even if your hair is not that long. The side donut is very popular and looks great in photos! The braid into a bun | donut optional This is also a great way to add interest to your hairstyle. A simple braid finished with a bun looks eye-catching. You can braid your hair on the side or straight down the back. You could even do two braids either side into a bun. Once again, try your hat on and then decide. The elegant roll A great alternative to the donut bun, the roll is feminine and classic and can also be done at home with a hair tie and some bobby pins. Wearing your hair out Contrary to popular belief, you can wear your hair out on race day. Just make sure it’s gorgeous! Race hairstyles for short hair You might be feeling a bit limited if you have short hair, but a bit of research can lead to some awesome ideas. You can still manage great volume with short hair, or even just a chic blow dried bob looks great. How to wear a fascinator Traditionally, millinery is worn on the right side of your head, but these days there really is no right or wrong side. Some are even designed to wear right in the centre. It also depends on how your milliner has made your hat; trims and details will look a bit off if worn on the opposite side to what your milliner intended. Try it on ahead of time to make sure it looks and fits naturally. The team at Pure Hair & Makeup offer a fantastic package for $130, a makeover package which includes a cut, conditioning treatment, brow wax and your choice of brow lash or tint for $79.95 (Hair Length - M + $10 - L + $20 - XL $30) and The Pure Beauty & Bali Breeze package which consists of a Sunescape Spray Tan followed by a Pure Hair Blowdry, Shellac polish on your fingers and toes and a Sunescape candle scented with Bali Breeze to take-home and all for just $149. KEEP IT NATURAL

T

here are many beautiful, classic looks for a home, but one that is a sure-fire hit is the nature-inspired, rustic setting. Get the look by adding timber planks as shelves, investing in timber floors, using metal and hardwood, incorporating leather, hanging pendant lights or adding plants. Timber planks: This is a practical and great look. Don’t tuck that beautiful china set away, display it on timber shelving. Timber floors: These are easy to clean and don’t hold stains. In winter when the timber floors get cold, cover them with textured mats. Metal and hardwood: Adding metal to wooden features gives a modern style and tables are also a chic element. Leather: Including leather into a room with the use of animal hides is now trending and perfectly suits the nature-inspired look. Leather seats or couches are also modern and look sophisticated. Hanging pendant lights: These have a great illumination, and the furniture will stand out against their unique radiance. Plants: A bit of greenery adds vibrancy to a room.

BOWLED OVER AT PALM LAKE Palm Lake offers residents an enviable lifestyle which enables them to enjoy a plethora of activities right at home

F

OR the residents of Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba, there’s nothing better than a game of friendly (and sometimes competitive) bowls with equally-as-friendly neighbours. When Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle comes online, this location will be the first across the Palm Lake Group, Australia-wide, to boast not one but two world championship lawn bowls greens. And the dream is not too far away, with the second new undercover bowls green and air-conditioned, panoramic clubhouse scheduled for completion in April this year. Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Bowls Club president Ron Rosentreter says the new bowls green will come in handy for social bowls nights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. "Outdoor bowls is very popular among the residents," Ron says. "There are more than 80 active members in the resort bowls club." And with another 330 villas scheduled for completion as part of the new Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle development, Ron expects many more enthusiastic bowlers to join the community, giving them the edge in inter-resort competitions between Palm Lake Resort Waterford, Deception Bay and Eagleby Heights, for example. "We compete for the Palm Lake Shield annually and Toowoomba came third in 2015 and runner up in 2016," Ron says. The fun continues within the resort itself, with championships in singles, pairs, triples, jack rolling and even a memorial game. "There are lots of social activities as well," says Ron. "Many members get involved in the great facilities available and we have most enjoyable events like happy hours." No wonder the residents of Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle are being bowled over by this latest development. I

ngredients 600g pork fillets ½ cup tapenade 1 tbs butter Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 apple, sliced Apple Sauce: 4 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and chopped Zest and juice of 1 lemon ¼ tsp allspice ¾ cup water ¼ cup sugar Method Preheat an oven to 180C. To make the apple sauce, place the apples, lemon, allspice, water and sugar in a medium-sized pot.

Stir and bring slowly to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes until the apples have softened and can be mashed with a fork. Remove and set aside until needed. Using a sharpening steel or the end of a knife, make a cavity approximately 1cm in diameter through the centre of the pork fillets. Start at one end and then the other, meeting in the middle. Using a spoon and your finger, fill the cavity with tapenade. Heat the butter in a frying pan. Brown the fillets on all sides, season with salt and pepper then place in the oven for 15 minutes until cooked through. While the fillets cook, brown the apple slices in the same pan for 1 minute each side. Slice the pork to serve with the fried apple and sauce. Enjoy with friends and family on a cool autumn’s night.

PICNIC RACES SET TO WOW The 2017 Dalby Picnic Races have function venues to suit each and every race-goer

F

OR over a century the Dalby Picnic Races have played host to an exciting day of fashion, fun and edge-of-your-seat style entertainment and the 2017 offering looks to once again deliver just that. This year marks the 105th running of the Dalby Picnic Races, and The Dalby Amateur Picnic Race Committee (DAPRC) are looking forward to welcoming the 3,500 strong crowd for what is sure to be an incredible day. The day will feature a seven-race program with more than $70,000 in prize money and bonuses on offer. All races on the day will be broadcast on Sky Racing and boast TAB coverage, along with being shown on the Warrego Water Big Screen, so attendees will not miss a thing. For anyone looking to really get into the spirit, why not take part in the BMO Calcutta — a great way to own a horse for a race. Whilst a large crowd is expected on the day, DAPRC has everyone covered thanks to great functions areas which cater to a variety of racegoers. All-inclusive packages, serving Brown Brothers wines and Carlton United beers, are available in the Oakey Beef Finishing Post Marquee and the Home Straight Lounge. The Oakey Beef Finishing Post Marquee offers guests an incredible experience thanks to its proximity to the track, top-shelf dining options and a selection of beautiful wine and beer. If a grazing buffet is more your style, The Home Straight Lounge is perfect for you. Also offering a four and a half hour premium beverage package, it’s hard to go past this superb function setting. 22

And whilst we all love a day at the track, some feel more at home in a more casual affair and thanks to the Black Toyota Marquee, racegoers can enjoy exactly that. Bring along a picnic hamper and reserve a table in this wonderfully relaxed and family friendly marquee. For the younger racegoers looking to kick their heels up; the Windsor Treehouse area, an all-inclusive party place, is an absolute must. This venue has been extremely popular and is expected to sell out again so get in quick. Racegoers will enjoy a selection of canapés served throughout the day and a four and a half hour beer and wine package, plus a DJ and bookmaker. While we are excited to offer a fantastic race program with TAB backing for the punters, we have not forgotten those who come for the fashion. The Dalby Shopping World Fashions on the Field will have five categories- Katrina’s Hair Design Classic Lady, Eyecare Eyewear Contemporary Fashion, Telstra Best Dressed Couple, Amcal+ Best Headwear and Lowes Best Dressed Gentleman – with prizes and cash totalling $7,500. Judges will be looking for appropriateness of the outfit, it must fall squarely into the category of race wear as well as suiting the season. For those wishing to party into the night – there will be live entertainment from after the last race until late. Complimentary buses will be running from the race course back into town after the last race. Tickets on sale from 10th March at Black Toyota Dalby and online via our website www.dalbypicnicraces.org.au.
