The 38 m (125 ft) long Kalutara Bridge that was built at the mouth of the ‘Kalu Ganga’ river serves as a major link between the country's western and southern border. There are more than 10 recognized star class hotels in Kalutara District and a number of guest houses, which provide more than 1800 – 2000 rooms for the tourist industry. Kalutara also offers a streach of sunny and pleasant beaches that are very popular among European tourists especially, German, British and Russian. situated in a location believed to be the centre of Sri Lanka, Nalanda Gedige is a unique combination of Hindu and Vajrayana Buddhist architectural and carving styles. The monument can be reached by taking the turn off near Nalanda Rest House on Matale - Dambulla main road. A two kilometre drive will reward you the stunning view of the 'Nalanda Gedige'. Archaeological evidences say, the stone monument was constructed between 8th to 11th Century AD. This unique shrine was originally constructed on a location now under the waters of Bowatenna Reservoir. The 'Nalanda Gedige' was laboriously reassembled to a higher and a more picturesque location situated 80 feet away from the rising waters of the reservoir in 1975. Rediscovered in 1839 by the illustrious Archaeologist Commissioner H.C.P.Bell in a ruined state, 'Nalanda Gedige' comprises distinctively Dravidian style of architecture with highly decorated 'mandapa' , an entrance hall or hall of waiting as of a Hindu Kovil. However, no sign of Hindu deities are included in the interiors of the building. The only suggestion of a deity found in

Text and pics. courtesy of Sri Lanka Tourism the structure is the statue of God Kuvera, the deity of wealth and the protector of the world, seated on a lotus found in the southern face of the construction. Yet many believe that it was placed there by the South Indian Kings, who ruled the country during the politically chaotic period. It is also said, that the kings built the 'Gedige' as a place of worship and later converted it to a Buddhist monument. However, 'Nalanda Gedige' is a perfect example of the symphonic combination of Hindu and Buddhist architectural styles to create a building of unique composition. Although the vestibule and the windowless shrine with its walls clattered with false windows, exteriors and interiors

containing erotically suggestive statues and elaborately carved pillars suggest heavy South Indian influence. The simple yet elegant moonstones, dwarfs or ground guarding bahiravas and dragon shaped balustrades speak of hybrid Sri Lankan tradition. The monument is now one of the most successful archaeological restorations in the region, yet none has been able to unlock the true history of Nalanda Gedige.

THE ARRIVAL OF POPE FRANCIS AND A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE

CATHOLIC CHURCH IN SRI LANKA

By Kalhari Pitigala

20 • SRI LANKA THE TREASURE ISLAND • FEBRUARY - MARCH 2015

Although

the Christian Church inaugurated in the island, by the Portuguese during the 16th century had to undergo numerous persecutions by the Dutch, managed to survive with great difficulties because of the diligent missionary activities of Oratorian fathers whose renowned leader was Blessed Joseph Vas, first to land in the island in 1687from Goa, India. Thus the Sri Lankan Roman Catholic Church that commenced its growth in the island like a tiny mustard seed survived inspite of various persecutions and challenges that came across her way during the colonial era. Today, it is made up of 12 dioceses including one archdiocese. There are approximately 1.2 million Catholics in Sri Lanka representing around 6.1% of the total population. The Roman Catholic Church in Sri Lanka is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope Francis the successor of Saint Peter in Rome.

Who is a Pope? A Pope is the visible spiritual leader of the Catholic Church which was established by Jesus Christ. Having established His Church, which consists of a community of believers who profess their faith in Him and His teachings, Jesus appointed Simon Peter one of the Twelve Apostles as its head. Simon was a fisherman by profession and became a disciple of Jesus. When Jesus appointed him as head of the Church, his name was changed to Peter which meant ‘rock’. Jesus told Peter “Simon, Son of John, you are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church.” After His resurrection Jesus appeared to the Apostles and told Peter “Feed my sheep”, “Tend my lambs” (John 27:15:17) which were clear references to the task at hand, namely of being a shepherd of the flock. The primary role of Peter as head of the Church was that of shepherding the flock of Christ. The role of a Pope who is the successor of Peter is therefore, pastoral in essence. A Pope is elected at a Conclave, which is an assembly of eligible College of Cardinal electors from all over the world upon the demise or retirement of a Pope. Currently a two-third supermajority is required for a Cardinal to be elected as Pope in addition to him giving his consent.

Authority and Duties of a Pope:

.....................................................................

The authority conferred by Jesus on Peter is known as the "power of the keys" (Mt. 16:19). The government of the Church - that is, authority to absolve sins, to make doctrinal judgements and to make disciplinary decisions - was given to the Apostles in general. Peter alone was given the "power of the keys". Jesus also gave to Peter a specific pastoral ministry - "feed my sheep" (Jn 21:1517). Thus, Peter was given a unique responsibility in church government and in pastoral ministry.

1969:

The Pope is first and foremost the Supreme Pastor. That means that he represents Christ's love and concern for every single individual. That is why the Pope's priority lies in getting to know people, understanding how they live, listening to their interests and sharing their sufferings and their joys. On no account should the Pope allow his contact with ordinary people to be obstructed by a multitude of administrative duties.

LOGO FOR THE POPE’S VISIT TO SRI LANKA CROSS: The cross shown here is the 'Sri Lankan Cross' inspired by 'The St. Thomas Cross' discovered in archeological excavations carried out in historic Anuradhapura. It is also the Glorious Cross or the Cross of the Resurrection - which shows the dead wood of the Cross coming into life -germinating and sprouting forth new life a prefiguration of the Resurrection. The Cross is coloured in blue to remind us of the consecration of our country to Our Lady of Lanka after World War II. It also speaks of our love and devotion to Mother Mary - Our Lady of Lanka. This is the colour used for the cross on the Sri Lankan Catholic flag. MITRE: This shows the mitre in white and yellow as depicted in the court of arms of Pope Francis. The lappets hanging down from the back are shown in red and yellow on either side embracing the two most important words of the occasion 'Pope Francis Sri Lanka 2015'. The mitre of Pope Francis our spiritual strength, guide and leader represents the Mother Church. The mitre that represents the Universal Church makes up the background to the Sri Lankan Cross that represents the Sri Lankan Church. BLESSED JOSEPH VAZ Blessed Joseph Vaz referred to as 'The Apostle of Sri Lanka' by St. John Paul II at the Beatification Ceremony in 1995, is shown holding the Cross of Sri Lanka and pointing to it. He is the architect of the survived Church of Sri Lanka for if he had not arrived in Sri Lanka during the Dutch persecution the seed that the Portuguese missionaries sowed would have died. It is also Fr. Joseph Vaz' Congregation that provided priests to Sri Lanka for 150 years (During the Dutch persecution period) to carry out his missionary zeal and further propagate the faith. We see the finger of his right hand pointed, as in the Michelangelo painting of the 'Creation of Adam' in the Sistine Chapel. For it is with this gesture that God is shown to give life to man and as such here it is used to show the giving of life to the persecuted Catholic Church of Lanka. The same language is used by artist Caravaggio in his painting 'The Call of Mathew'. Interpreting further and into the present day, Blessed Joseph Vaz uses the same language to call us to be part of the mission and follow Jesus. 24 • SRI LANKA THE TREASURE ISLAND • FEBRUARY - MARCH 2015

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith the ninth and current Archbishop of Colombo, serving since 2009

COLOURED CURVES: On either side of the Pope's mitre are the four colours of the Sri Lankan flag: Maroon, orange, green and yellow, symbolising the multi-ethnic, multireligious Sri Lankan Nation. These colourson either side of the mitre formed like two hands ready to clasp the mitre - also indicate that we the Sri Lankan Catholic Church warmly welcomes Pope Francis to our fold. SHAPE: The ultimate composition looks like a lotus bud - the blue water lily or ‘Nil Manel’ flower which is the national flower of Sri Lanka. The logo shows the Catholic Church of Sri Lanka who accepts the loving leadership of Pope Francis as her Chief Shepherd and warmly welcomes him to her midst.

in Sri Lanka opened an era of cruel persecution against the Catholics and the faithful of Manthai - in the district of Mannar who were forced to consider removing the statue of Our Lady of Mantai to a safe place. About the same time there was another movement towards Madhu The Portuguese missionaries from India, from the Jaffna peninsula. especially under the authority of Saint Francis Xavier are known to have brought To avoid Dutch persecution, about 700 Roman Catholicism to Jaffna in the Catholics crossed over to Pooneryn and sought refuge in the Vanni. During this time the Catholics regrouped to form a church in Mantai installing a statue of Our Lady of Good Health in a shrine. The Dutch invasion and the persecution of the Catholic Church in 1670, led 20 Catholic families to flee from Mantai, along with the statue of Mary in that church to a safer locale of Madhu. There were no priests to give them any spiritual support or strength. The little company wandered hither and thither in the thick forest of the Vanni in constant fear of the enemy. Finally they settled in a hamlet called Maruthamadhu. About the same time another 700 Catholics migrated from Jaffna peninsula into Wanni forests. When these two communities met in Madhu they installed a new shrine with the statue. With the revival of Catholic faith by missionaries such as Blessed Joseph Vaz, Oratorian priests expanded the small shrine in late 17th century. Among the newly arrived Catholics from Jaffna was a daughter of a Portuguese Captain named Helena, who out of her fervent piety built the first little Church dedicated to Our Lady of Madhu. For this good act the Christians have immortalized her memory by calling this place "Silena - Marutha - Madhu'' which to the present day continues to be one of the names of the holy sanctuary. people began to take the Madhu earth to various parts of Sri Lanka as a medicine and found that it had the same healing power. One of the reasons why people make a pilgrimage to this sacred shrine from various parts of this island is for the reception of the Sacrament of Penance. Many a sinner who has not confessed in his own parish church for years, makes a good confession and begins a virtuous life at the sanctuary of Our Lady of Madhu. With the arrival of British to the island, the persecution ceased, but the number of Catholics remained small, with just 50,000 members in 1796. With such a small community the shrine at Madhu started to attract pilgrims from all over From her sylvan shrine, Our Lady of Madhu the country. liberally dispensed her favours spiritual The stifling of Jesuit authority which had and temporal to her children. have the statue crowned and thus in 1924 a hundred years after the statue of Our Lady had been given a permanent habitation at Madhu, it was solemnly and officially crowned by the Papal Legate who came in the name of Pope Pius XI. It fell to his successor, Bishop Guyomar, another great lover of Mary, to inaugurate his episcopate with the coronation of Our Lady of Madhu and to expand, embellish and organize his sanctuary into the splendid state in which it is today.

The building of the new church was initiated by Bishop Bonjean in 1872 and his successors built a facade, the spacious presbytery, the restful chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. In 1920 Bishop Brault, who was very devoted to Our Lady of Madhu, obtained the Pope's sanction for the historic solemn coronation of the Statue of Our Lady of Madhu. Bishop Brault with the clergy and the laity had petitioned the Vatican Chapter through the Apostolic Delegate Cardinal Van Rossam, Prefect of the S.C. of Propaganda and he personally presented the request to the Pope, who in his audience of April 7, 1921, granted the request. In 1924 it was officially crowned by the Papal Legate who came in the name of Pope Pius XI. In preparation for the consecration ceremony by Bishop J. A. Guyomar, the old wooden structure and the whole sanctuary was replaced with Blue and White Marble. In spite of travel restrictions and difficulties finding conveyance during World War II, more than 30,000 people came to the jungle shrine of Our Lady of Madhu for the Consecration in 1944.’ Madhu made elaborate preparations to FEBRUARY - MARCH 2015 • SRI LANKA THE TREASURE ISLAND • 31

It was Bishop Guyomar who on June 25, 1944 in the presence of numerous priests and the vast throng of people, consecrated the altar and the Church. An important ceremony that took place was the enclosing of the relics of the martyrs in a small silver casket officially sealed by the Bishop of Jaffna and deposited in the cavity carved inside the altar. The relics of SS Fabian, Sebastian, Agnes and Grata were enclosed in this casket. Because of this consecration of the Church, large numbers of pilgrims attended the festivals thereupon. The statue of Our Lady of Madhu had been taken for procession thrice to the parishes in Sri Lanka, in 1948, 1974 and in 2001. The latter was as a spiritual effort to encourage Catholics in Sri Lanka to pray for peace and an end to the civil war. The shrine has housed thousands of refugees since 1990. Catholic bishops called for the Madhu vicinity to be a demilitarized zone with guaranteed security for pilgrims and the 15,000 refugees taking shelter. When the violence escalated the civilians sheltered in the premises had to flee further north; the statue itself had to be moved because of repeated shelling. Catholics associate Madhu with miraculous favours, healing of longstanding ailments, family reconciliations, recovery of lost properties etc. So Madhu has always drawn Catholics for its sacredness. To safeguard the sanctity of this sacred spot, and in order that the pilgrims may live here an intense Catholic life, and to breath the pure air of prayer, the ecclesiastical authorities have been continuing to maintain the sacredness of this shrine. It is the ardent desire of all people that it should be a place of worship, a common prayer home for all people. In 1948 from March 15 to May 5 the statue of Our Lady of Madhu was taken in procession to every parish in the diocese of Jaffna for a call to a more Catholic life. Non Catholics vied with Catholics in welcoming her. In 1974 in order to commemorate the Holy Year proposed by the Holy Father viz Renewal and Reconciliation, the statue of Our Lady was taken to the different parishes for the second time.

Mini Adam’s peak The ‘Punchi Sri Padaya’ or Mini Adam’s peak is a small mountain 1172 meters high above the mean sea level. It’s about 2 ½ km away from Ella town. Of course it is walking distance from Ella town and is very popular as a famous view point that facilitates a 360 degree view. Although it does not contain a foot print of the Buddha like on the Sri Pada Mountain peak also known as Adam's Peak, villagers still call the mountain so. To reach Mini Adam’s peak one has to walk from Ella junction along the Ella-Namunukula -Passara road about 1 km. Then turn right and the road to the Mini Adam’s peak is through a beautiful lush tea plantation. One has to walk about ¾ km along the gravel road up to a “Y” junction on the way. From the “Y” junction turn right and walk about ¼ km along the tea estate road.

On your right side, you can see Ella rock mountain and Ella-Wellawaya road like a ribbon in zenith. Not only that, Ravana Ella cave, Ravana Ella cave temple, is also clearly visible and to the left side, the upper part of the Ravana Ella waterfall can also be seen. From this point one has to climb the steps that run to the top of Mini Adam’s peak. When climbing the steps and footpath on your left side you can see 98 Acres resort, and Newburg Tea Factory.

So, he wondered around the hills and found a mountain in the shape of the Adam’s Peak. and marked a foot print on the top of the mountain. With the help of some villagers he carried the old lady to the peak where it was wowed by her saying that it was the Adam’s Peak. Ever since then people call it - Ella Mini Adam’s Peak.

Dambana

is a village where Sri Lankan indigenous people - the “Veddas” live. Dambana provides the traditional hunting grounds in the jungles nearby. The village lies 15 km away from Mahiyangana town in Badulla district, along the Mahiyangana-Padiyatalawa road.

Today, there are about 350 ‘Vedda’ families around Dambana. Local and foreign tourists have been visiting the place for a long time and the area has gradually become a tourist destination since recent years. In 1970, a mass scale irrigation project namely, the Mahaweli Development Programme started in Sri Lanka and under the this project, Maduru Oya reservoir was built near Dambana village and the forest around the Maduru Oya reservoir was declared as Maduru Oya national park.

As Dambana village lies to the boundary of ‘Maduru Oya’ national park, the government requested the indigenous ‘Vedda’ community to shift from their original lands. But they didn’t. Their leader at that time, Uruwarige Thissahami who passed away at the age of 104 in 1988, refused and protested against the Government and won their homelands. But, hunting in the Maduru Oya national park was prohibited. When one enters Dambana village, the first sight is a newly built museum, the ‘Wariga Rukul Pojja’ as they have named it. The museum is the house for many instruments and objects used by the ‘Vedda’ community and photographs of their events and chiefs. Outer walls of the museum contain a lot of paintings of cave drawings by ‘Vedda’ people who lived in the stone age. The museum was established under the project- ‘Pubudamu Wellassa’, for the protection of cultural identity of the ‘Vedda’ community. 38 • SRI LANKA THE TREASURE ISLAND • FEBRUARY - MARCH 2015

lucky press and electronic media journalists from 13 member countries of the Asian Productivity Organization received the unique opportunity of visiting Japan, the beautiful country of sun-shine in early September 2014. They were in a Multicountry Observational Study Mission on Best Practices in Promoting Innovation and Productivity in Agriculture for Mass Media Practitioners organized by the Asian Productivity Organization, the APO Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Following feature is an experience shared on how Japan has productively and effectively included a festive cultural component in the booming trade of tourism. Most regions of Japan have four distinct seasons and autumn months are basically September, October, and November. Leaves beautifully turn red, orange, and yellow, and they are so beautiful. Fall foliage is called "kouyou" in Japanese which literally means red leaves. It's said that Japan's earliest fall foliage happens in the Daisetsuzan mountains, Hokkaido. Other popular fall foliage destinations include Nikko, Kamakura, Hakone, and more. Kyoto and Nara, which were Japan's ancient capitals, the colorful leaves match their historical architectures and attract many visitors. Old temples and shrines are good places to visit during fall foliage season. Our destination for last year’s Japanese Autumn Festival was Nanbu town in the Aomori prefecture. Nanbu Town is an area where scents of fruits and moving experiences await. Nanbu town operates several popular farm-direct shops in the area, including the Nagawa Cherry Centre, which is managed by a people’s association. The sign for the centre features a painting of cherries, the area’s most famous product. Nearly 100 varieties of fresh vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, pickles, snacks, juice, jam and more are always available.

– people gathered in colorful yet unique Japanese traditional costumes along the street to join the festive fiesta. As traditional Japanese drums and music were played, a group of young boys performed a ritualistic dance in front of the business centres in the town wishing them success in their business activities. On a colorful mobile platform, beautiful Japanese performers were showcasing traditional Japanese dance, song and music. Many skilled performers of Japanese dance and music traditions from little kids to young and old were seen performing on one stage for the spectators at the same time. The welcome of the Mayor of Nanbu Town Sukenao Kudo in his traditional costume won the hearts of everyone at once. Visitors loved to pause for several photo sessions with him and sometimes even with his Samurai swords. This smiling gentleman won the hearts of everyone there, for his ingenuity and warm –hearted smile. “Our town, Nanbu, which has been moving forward step by step since its formation while paying respect to the achievements of those who came before us, is known to be where the Nanbu Domain was located in the early modern period. It is also one of Aomori Prefecture’s leading fruit producers. I am willing to take bold initiatives to overcome the mountain of problems we face and to think and act creatively to proactively implement a wide variety of measures in order to realize a town administration that meets local needs and make the most of our town’s characteristics by placing great emphasis on keeping conversational ball rolling with residents,” he says. At the Nanbu town traditional theater hall journalists came to know much about the history, future prospects and present-day developments being carried out for the socio-economic and socio-cultural development of the people in Nanbu town area. The Japanese Government’s dedication to continuously uplift the quality of Japanese citizens was transparent throughout. As the Aomori Prefecture was searching

During the lectures, at the Nanbu town traditional theatre hall, the mayor sent his goodwill to everyone who visited the autumn festival in nanbu. It was a beautiful cloth of literature written in red, a token of goodwill and everyone wrapped it around their heads to show respect and say they attended the festival. ART

‘Fe+’

Transforming the Glory of Sight through Art and Drawings,

‘Fe+’

an exhibition that displayed artistic creations, sculptures and art done out of waste metal products by Lalith Senanayake was recently inaugurated Gandhara Gallery at 28,, Stratford Ave, Colombo 06. The exhibition displayed striking birds and animals, made of scrap metal, yet instantly recognizable in their composition. The artist says he made quick sketches in the wild and then gathered waste metal products such as motor parts, cutlery and assembled them proportionately to form creations of stark beauty. “In my mind every nut and bolt, silencer, steering wheel, that was thrown aside and piled up created a definite shape in my mind’s eye that could be beautified and re-created contributing ultimately to the goal of conservation of Nature," Senanayake says. In an essay of his artistic expression, he adds much to an innovative culture of artistic expression through re-creating nature using every nut and bolt, silencer, steering wheel and stockpiles which are a potential threat to human health and the environment, when such waste is left alone to deteriorate in the open environment. “Transforming the glory of sight, the beauty of the world around me through the medium of art and drawings, I think has come to me as a gift from GOD, or perhaps from merits I have I earned in lives before. It is different from being taught to draw, to me drawing is an evocation of my inner self, how I interpret beauty, sadness, colours and life, and the stimulations derived from the nature that surrounds me. My meandering through jungles and villages, cities and people when time permits, has not only given me immense pleasure, but instilled in my soul the rhymes and the rhythms of peoples and cultures both traditional and dynamic, permeating vibrancy of life around me, to the wildlife, and to the waters that gush through the jungles.

FEBRUARY - MARCH 2015 • SRI LANKA THE TREASURE ISLAND • 63

So, the journey towards an exhibition began, something different from what I’ve attempted so far, doing sculptures in live settings, and experiencing wildlife as never before. I started busying myself making quick sketches of the wild animals, and then gathered waste metallic products such as motor parts, cutlery and assembled them proportionately to form creations of wild beauty. This was a concept bringing to gather my passion for wildlife and the yearning for creating works of art. In my mind every nut and bolt, silencer, steering wheel, that was thrown aside and piled up created a definite shape in my minds eye that could be beautified and re-created contributing ultimately to the goal of Conservation of Nature.

A slice of Aloe on my eyes, to sooth the pain and gain back my vision after being dissuaded from working for hours on end welding under the beating sun, thinking of the unfinished work that lie forth me, made it impossible for me to rest even for awhile. Now as I walk amidst the finished works of art, thoughts rush to my mind of how I bended even the toughest steel to create a beautiful work of art, to bring in joy to the mind of us humans, and at the same time reminding me of the hard times, away from family and friends,. Tough times are now over and I’ve reached my goal, now its time to share the joy of these wonderful creations with you. So this is the journey my exhibits have made to the idyllic location for an exhibition at Ghandara, in Stafford Avenue, Colombo 6. Mr. Dyan Gomes, who has the good fortune to own this beautiful sprawling architectural creation including the green garden, will always earn my gratitude for graciously opening his doors to exhibit my works here.”

Some of this work I carried out in Anuradhaupra, from where I gained artistic inspiration and zeal from the Palaces that once stood within a glorious civilization, where you see the ruins that their speak of a history that enthralling the mind. To wonder about the immense capacity of the then sculptors, to think of all the architectural beauty to even imagine of the hydro technical engineering utilized then, were all part of an ingenious history. It’s seemingly impossible to forget the elephants, peacocks, and the hornbill as part of nature and the chena crops that spread across vast areas with sesame, and corn. The experiences I had were more precious to me that I could sense the presence of the elephants from a distant through smell, while patiently and painstakingly putting metallic nails, together one after the other. I look from side to side as response to this sent to catch a glimpse of this giant creature. I soon was told by my colleagues while doing a sculpture of a Hornbill, that these birds were in fact responsible for the loss of large amounts of chili from crops of Anuradhapura and hence nicknamed ‘Chili Robbers’. To see myself how they went about doing this I waited for hours atop a ficus tree and watched in patience. Even the snakes that slithered past me took no notice of me, perhaps knowing that I was another child of nature. The endless chirping of the crickets at night, and the mourning of the Owls brings sadness, and the yearning to see my beloved children Yani, and Pawan after weeks of not seeing their laughter and cries.

Non-claimant policyholders receive a proportionate share of the SURPLUS from the risk fund at the end of a defined period. Amãna Takaful is the only insurer in Sri Lanka who shares a part of the SURPLUS with non-claimant policyholders. The company has delivered policyholders a SURPLUS of 12.5% in 2013 and 15% in 2014. Madhu church ICT enabled by SLT • adds value to the Catholic community of Sri Lanka • facilitating all pilgrims to visit the church and participate in mass

Sri Lanka

Telecom (SLT), the national ICT solutions provider has successfully completed the ICT enablement of the famous Our Lady of Madhu Church in Mannar, for the benefit of thousands of pilgrims who visit this church each year. The system was first implemented during the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Sri Lanka in January, during which time he conducted a special mass at the Madhu Church in Mannar. The Madhu church is a highly venerated place of worship with many miracles attributed to the miraculous nature of this holy church which is frequented by a large number of Catholic devotees from all over the island. The church building cannot accommodate the large number of people who flock for mass due to inadequate space, thereby leaving many standing outside and unable to view and properly participate in the service taking place within the church. This inconvenience was rightfully addressed by SLT with the installation of cameras inside the church with a live feed to 5 LED screens set up in the church premises, enabling thousands of devotees who thronged the church premises from all parts of the country to closely participate in the special service taking place inside the church. This system enabled thousands of people who visited the Madhu church to be blessed by His Holiness Pope Francis. The service conducted by the Pope was also telecast live via PEO TV to enable Catholics all over the island to participate in the mass from their homes. The Holy Father prayed that through the intercession of Our Lady of Madhu may all people of this land find strength and inspiration to build a future of reconciliation, justice and peace. Through the use of technology this profound message was broadcast to the people of Sri Lanka and the rest of the world. Giving his views on this CSR project, Mr. Lalith de Silva, the Group CEO of SLT said, “The Madhu church is a very special place of worship for Catholics who visit the church from all over the island throughout the year, especially for church feasts. After coming such a long way, it is very unfortunate that they are unable to fully follow the proceedings inside the church due to overcrowding and inadequate space inside the building. Therefore, finding alternative ways for all pilgrims who have taken the trouble to travel so far, to closely follow mass has been a very strongly felt need. We are happy to provide this ICT solution to the Madhu church which will be of immense value to the Catholic community including people of other faiths in Sri Lanka.” About Sri Lanka Telecom PLC Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) is the nation’s number one integrated ICT solutions provider.
