When equipped with the Tilt Hitch, a mulching head can be tilted up to 45 degrees to the left or right. Compared with competitive units, which typically have restricted movement in one direction, the Loftness hitch offers one of the highest ranges of motion in the industry. Other advantages include a light weight and low cost, thanks to its practical, simplistic design.

Tilting the mulching head allows an operator to fully expose the knives when cutting into trees. Additionally, trees can be held in place for faster mulching performance by tilting and positioning the head so that the shear bar rests against the tree to pre-

vent it from wobbling. When ground mulching, the head can also be tilted in a way to keep material from ejecting out the back or to help pick material off the ground for further processing.

The 20 and 30 Series Battle Ax attachments from Loft-

ness are compatible with excavators ranging from 10,000 to 36,000 pounds. The Tilt Hitch will eventually be made available for the 40 and 50 Series Battle Ax models, which are designed for 36,000- to 88,000 pound excavators. SP

Featuring a redesigned build, reworked functionality, reimagined technology and refocused serviceability, these 6,000-lb maximum lift capacity telehandlers are ideal for pick-and-place applications, such as handling, loading and unloading bulk materials on demanding residential, commercial, urban and suburban job sites across America.

Redesigned build

The brand-new 6034 telehandler replaces the previous 6036 model, while the 6042 telehandler has been updated with new features inspired by the way customers work. For example, these updated units feature a lower operating weight — 14,500lb on the 6034 and 19,100lb on the 6042 — allowing

for more efficient transport. These machines’ lightweight design with an optimized frame structure allows three 6034 models or two 6042 models to be hauled on a single flatbed trailer. In fact, the 6034 model is lightweight enough that it can even be transported with a standard pickup truck and trailer.

The 6034 model offers a lift height of 34-ft lift height and 23-ft forward reach. The 6042 model provides a 42-ft lift height and 29-ft forward reach. Both the 6034 and 6042 offer three steering modes — 2-wheel, 4-wheel and 4-wheel crab — which operators can select as needed for better maneuverability. Additionally, these models have a 95-in width and smaller tires, giving them best-in-class maneuverability, while still maintaining their competitive 15-in ground clearance.

The enclosed cab on these models is available with optional air conditioning for comfortable operation on hot or humid job sites.

Reworked functionality

The 6034 and 6042 are equipped with a 74-hp, 2.9L Deutz diesel engine that

doesn’t require diesel exhaust fluid, which reduces maintenance costs. Their hydrostatic transmissions pro-

vide greater control and ease of operation. They also have inching functionality, which allows operators to run the

boom at high speeds without shifting the transmission into neutral — this translates

These newly updated SkyTrak telehandlers both feature a new advanced control system that allows for more options like load stability indication (LSI), seatbelt engagement and operator presence (SEOP), along with improved diagnostics. The new cab design features a larger LCD display for a more data-rich interface and larger, singlepage load charts for added convenience.

Productivity and operator confidence go even further with several optional systems. The optional multireverse camera system lets operators backup with confidence by displaying multiple views from behind the machine to the left, right and rear. This system can be used during the day and night, and it features four components: Left and rightside backup cameras, a rear backup camera and a triview monitor.

The optional reverse sensing system alerts operators to rear obstructions with an audible alarm. This feature helps crews be more aware of their surroundings,

especially on busy job sites. And finally, the optional white noise backup alarm emits a directional alarm signal on the machine as it travels in reverse. This type of alarm helps cut down on job site noise while enhancing worker safety outside the machine.

Refocused serviceability

Service enhancements made to these new SkyTrak models include a 30-percent reduction on hydraulic hoses and connections, resulting in fewer potential leak points.

The top-mounted telescopic cylinder provides easier access for service, and the rear access door on the frame has been replaced with a bolt-on panel for added durability. Enhancements to the boom on both SkyTrak models include faster boom function speed, an 8-percent improvement over previous models, and an updated single compensation and lift cylinder design for fewer components to maintain, streamlining maintenance. Vancouver’s PNE Amphitheatre Gets A Mass Timber Makeover

The design for the brand-new PNE Amphitheatre at Hastings Park has been unveiled, featuring a dramatic mass timber curved roof.

For almost 60 years the PNE’s Amphitheatre, with its spectacular views of the North Shore mountains and Burrard Inlet, has hosted musical and cultural events for visitors across Vancouver, BC and beyond. Said to have one of the most beautiful views of any venue on the West Coast of North America, the Amphitheatre has hosted artists representing virtually every genre of music imaginable since it opened in 1964.

The Amphitheatre has closed with the last show, Blue

Rodeo: 30 Years in July ending the venue’s 59-year run.

The existing Amphitheatre will be demolished in the coming months, making way for a spectacular new world-class outdoor venue.

The new Amphitheatre, which has been in the planning stages for several years, is anticipated to be one of the most impressive venues of its kind in North America when completed in 2026.

What is mass timber construction?

Mass timber construction, in contrast to lightframe wood construction, is built using a category of engineered wood products typically made of large, solid wood panels, columns or

beams often manufactured off-site for load-bearing wall, floor, and roof construction. Mass timber is engineered for high strength ratings like concrete and steel but is significantly lighter in weight. Mass timber products are thick, compressed layers of wood, creating strong, structural load-bearing elements that can be constructed into panelized components. They are typically formed through lamination, fasteners, or adhesives. Mass timber can complement light-frame and

hybrid options and is an environmentally friendly substitute for carbon-intensive materials and building systems.

According to Forestry Innovation Investment and naturally:wood, mass timber is not to be confused with light-frame wood construction. A mass timber building uses solid timber or engineered wood as the primary

load-bearing structural element, whereas wood-frame buildings are constructed from dimension lumber and sheathing. Mass timber construction, using prefabricated panels, beams and columns made from thick, compressed layers of wood, is comparable to steel and concrete in terms of strength and performance. The Design

The new Amphitheatre is designed by renowned Vancouver-based architecture company Revery Architecture. Tracing the gentle slope of the nearby Windermere Hill, the new design settles into Hastings Park on three points, framing vistas of the North Shore Mountains and surrounding verdant landscape, while creating an intimate atmosphere under the warm cover of the wood. Reinterpreting a traditional concrete shell typology, the precedent-setting starburst timber arch roof will be amongst the world’s largest, harnessing the compression capacity of mass timber to span an impressive 105m. The use of curved Glulam and Cross-Laminated

Timber deck for the roof significantly reduces the embodied carbon compared to steel and concrete alternatives, and provides greater acoustic absorption than fabric structures.

Revery is also providing visioning for the adjacent Festival Plaza and Hastings Creek daylighting. Contiguous to the Amphitheatre, the Festival Plaza will create a new urban heart of the park, featuring comfortable seating, public art, built-in festival and event infrastructure, and food trucks to support accessible public programming through all seasons. The future daylighted creek will extend its living edges through a protected riparian zone, gently bridging natural ecology with the social

ecologies of the Festival Plaza and Amphitheatre, while achieving audience and viable area targets, preserving existing mature trees, fulfilling capture-and-clean rainwater management goals, and promoting curiosity around ecological restoration in an urban context.

Once complete, the renewed PNE Amphitheatre will be a vital contributor to Vancouver’s cultural ecosystem, amplifying under one roof the richness of the community’s creative, natural, and social setting.

The PNE Amphitheatre will augment the City’s Resilient Vancouver and Climate Emergency Action Plan strategies and will demonstrate sustainable leadership on a national scale. The project is targeting Passive House and LEED Gold Certifications for enclosed spaces and, driven by the use of mass timber in the roof structure and backof-house spaces, a 40% reduction in embodied carbon emissions compared to the baseline. The design will also follow Zero Emissions guidelines.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2024 with completion in early 2026. SP

New Technologies Available For DEVELON -7 Series Wheel Loaders

DEVELON announces enhanced wheel loader safety features.

DEVELON is introducing new innovative technologies on its next-generation -7 Series wheel loaders in North America. Technologies previewed during CONEXPOCON/AGG 2023 help improve operator productivity, visibility and safety.

Technologies including the Transparent Bucket, around view monitor (AVM) camera system and object detection are offered as standard on all next-generation machines, from the DL200-7 through the DL580-7, helping operators get the job done in

the most challenging conditions today and in the future.

“DEVELON is the only construction equipment manufacturer in the industry with the Transparent Bucket technology,” says Bill Zak, wheel loader product manager. “When it’s paired with the AVM, our 2023 -7 Series wheel loaders will help operators and owners be more productive while increasing their visibility and safety.”

Exclusive Transparent Bucket Technology

The exclusive Transparent Bucket technology is an innovative construction equipment technology that helps minimize blind spots for wheel loader operators when the bucket is raised.

“The Transparent Bucket technology offers a supplemental view from a monitor inside the wheel loader cab,” says Zak. “The system has two cameras with protective guarding, one mounted high on the cab and one mounted low on the axle on the front of the machine. The system’s processor automatically adjusts the camera inputs into a single image that makes the bucket appear transparent on an in-cab monitor.”

With an unobstructed

view in front of the wheel loader bucket, operators can see objects such as large rocks, construction materials, obstacles and even people in front of the machine — objects that would otherwise be obstructed from view by the bucket. Since operators can “see through” the wheel loader bucket, it helps them efficiently dig into and precisely place material where it needs to go. This technology helps maximize productivity on the most challenging jobsites.

According to a report published in March 2023 by the Center for Construction Research and Training, 17% of fatal injuries in construction from 2011 to 2021 were “struck by” fatalities. This type of fatality is defined as an “injury in which a person is struck by a vehicle, object, or equipment.” New technology from DEVELON can potentially help reduce these fatalities with increased operator visibility to the jobsite.

Around View Monitor Camera System

For additional visibility and safety on jobsites, DEVELON -7 Series wheel loaders have an AVM camera system. Three cameras and several sensors are mounted on the rear of the wheel loader, giving operators up to 270 degrees of enhanced visibility.

“If there’s an object eight to 12 feet behind the machine, a flashing green caution box will appear, notifying the wheel loader operator,” says

Zak. “A yellow caution box will show up if the object is four to eight feet and a red triangle and red border notification if the object is closer than four feet.”

When wheel loader operators combine the AVM camera system, floor-to-ceiling side cab windows and the Transparent Bucket technology, they have nearly 360 degrees of visibility. This level of visibility can help reduce the possibility of the operator hitting another object on a busy jobsite.

Other Smart Technologies

The 2023 -7 Series wheel loaders are designed with other smart technology features that owners and operators can use to make meaningful improvements to the productivity of their operations.

• DEVELON Fleet Management telematics system makes it easy for owners to monitor their fleet and manage maintenance to reduce operating costs.

Using a smartphone, tablet or computer, owners can check machine location, operating hours, fuel usage, engine idle versus work time, error codes, engine and hydraulic oil temperature and various other data points.

• Situation Awareness Technology (SAT) automatically monitors the machine’s ac-

tivity and adjusts the wheel loader engine’s output to match real-time requirements of the hydraulic system and drivetrain.

• Smart Guidance System analyzes operator driving habits and provides tips during operation on the Smart Touch display to improve their efficiency.

Addressing A Critical Mineral Industries Workforce Shortage

Andrea Brickey, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Mining Engineering and Management at South Dakota Mines, is among a group of industry professionals raising red flags over the labor shortage in the mining industry.

Brickey was recently quoted in this Wall Street Journal article examining how workforce needs in the mining industry may hamper the nation’s transition to renewable energy.

“Mining is a big part of what powers our country and our economy, and any transition to renewable energy will rely heavily on critical

minerals needed for modern technology,” says Brickey.

“Alongside this increasing demand for raw materials, we have a dramatic need for people in the mining industry, it’s estimated that between now and 2030 we will lose about half of our workforce.”

Brickey says modern mining is not what most

people think it is.

“It’s not mining like it was 120 years ago; mining is so multidisciplinary, from engineers of all types to computer scientists to mechanics. We have to be on the forefront of innovation. We are often the first to implement new technologies in robotics, machine learning, autonomous vehicles and more — all of these different emerging technologies to make our operations more efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly,” she says.

Her own path to becoming a leading academic voice in the mining industry may serve as an inspiration to others. She joined the industry following her graduation in mining engineering from

Maximizing Material Recovery

New CDE ultra fines recovery system commissioned for James Dick Construction.

Ontario-based sand and aggregate producer James Dick Construction has finalized a major new investment in an ultra fines recovery system, designed and engineered by wet processing industry experts CDE, as the company solidifies its position as one of the leading suppliers of construction materials in the local market.

The James Dick group of companies has grown from its humble beginnings in 1964 to its current position as a leader in the supply of sand, gravel and limestone products in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

In 1983, the group acquired Caledon Sand & Gravel Inc. and with it the 825-acre Caledon Pit, then one of the largest pits in the country. It was in 1997 that James Dick Construction secured a licence to expand its Caledon Pit which would ensure reserves of quality construction materials for the local market for decades to come.

Its focus has long been driven by a desire to ensure a consistent supply of materials with the least social and environmental impact by locating itself close to where demand is to minimize haulage emissions which delivers both environmental and commercial advantages.

Continuing this trend, the recent commissioning of a state-of-the-art 50tph (tons per hour) ultra fines recovery system with cyclone technology in Caledon, Ontario is

maximizing material recovery from its quarrying business, extending the operational life of its active extraction sites and available reserves.

At Caledon, the business currently maintains a range of wet and dry screening equipment, including traditional sand screw technology, an essential innovation in the quarrying industry over the years but one that lacks the accuracy of modern washing equipment.

The benefits of cyclone technology vastly outweigh the capabilities of sand screws, achieving greater materials output and minimizing the loss of high-quality fines. CDE cyclone technology delivers unrivaled control of silt cut points and product specification to produce high value, in-spec construction materials straight from the belt.

Sustained demand for sand and aggregate products coupled with increasingly stringent regulatory requirements necessitates that producers maximize their reserves to maintain profitability and meet the demands of the market.

The new CDE plant is processing material previously lost to the overflow of two existing sand screws to recover premium fine washed masonry sand at a rate of 45tph.

Commenting on the project, CDE business development manager for Canada, Adrian Convery, says: “Fully operational, our highly ef-

ficient ultra fines recovery system will make a significant contribution to Caledon Sand & Gravel. South Dakota Mines. Her engineering work took her all around the world, to Brazil, Venezuela, South Africa, Canada, several states in the western United States and more. She wore many hats, serving as drill and blast engineer, safety trainer, and budget manager working with many different types of commodities and methods.

Brickey circled back to academia and received her Ph.D. in 2015, returning to her alma mater as a faculty member in mining engineering. She was recently promoted to full professor,

and she received the 2023 Mining and Exploration Division Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration.

Her next goal is to launch a Black Hills chapter of Women in Mining to help encourage more women to enter the field.

“There are a lot of great women in the mining industry, but we need more. With the demand for minerals, workforce development is going to be a big thing for the mining industry. So, we are trying to show young people all of the opportunities that are available.”

Her current research focuses primarily on using math to make underground mining environments both safer for miners and more efficient with operations. She’s also looking at repurposing the electrical infrastructure at mines to generate and distribute renewable energy on reclaimed lands.

“We have some challenges, and we need bright young people who are tech-savvy and who have a desire to really make an impact,” says Brickey.

South Dakota Mines is

focused on helping industry meet workforce shortage challenges. The university’s Mining Hub is at the center of forging new publicprivate partnerships that are fueling industry innovation and helping train the next generation of a highly skilled workforce. Brickey is particularly excited about the new Nucor Mineral Industries Building set to open next year on the Mines campus.

“We’re so excited! Not only will it help us educate our students with the modern equipment and technology that is changing the industry, but it will help demonstrate the importance of the mineral industries. It’s the foundation of our society, helping provide the raw materials we need to do all the things we want to do.”

More than anything, Brickey wants to show prospective undergraduate and graduate students that there are huge opportunities in the mining industry, both for professional advancement and growth, and to make a difference in the world. SP

Testing A Greener Asphalt Solution

A new road segment, to be tested by the ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable, will allow validating the mechanical performance of the asphalt mixture with a higher lignin substitution rate.

“This testbed represents an important step towards the adoption of lignin by the road construction industry,” said Stéphane Renou, President and CEO, FPInnovations. “This key partnership with the Ministère is helping to accelerate the integration of innovative products into the value chain, and to demonstrate the benefits of innovations from the forest sector. The contribution of the forest sector to the advancement of low-carbon products remains a major motivator for FPInnovations’ innovative projects.”

The new testbed follows on from a project initiated by FPInnovations, a private not-for-profit organization specializing in the creation of solutions that support the global competitiveness of

the Canadian sector, that includes the use of a bioproduct in asphalt mixtures. The new trials, conducted on behalf of the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD), are being carried out in collaboration with Eurovia, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction. The FPInnovations project, which is funded by Natural Resources Canada, aims to reduce the carbon footprint of road construction.

“Canada is blessed with immense forest resources,” stated The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. “Finding innovative ways of managing and utilizing these resources can provide new pathways for low-carbon solutions. This means lower emissions and good, sustain-

able jobs for workers. This partnership with FPInnovations is paving the way for a more sustainable Canada.”

A first stage of the project demonstrated that the results from ÉTS tests on lignin-modified bitumen and asphalt, that were carried out on five road segments across Canada, achieved performance equivalent to that of conventional materials after two years, confirming the feasibility of asphalt mix manufacture and application. Following these demonstrations, MTMD decided to set up a testbed on Road 235, in Ange-Gardien.

“Today’s announcement is truly thrilling news,” said Stéphane Lauzon, Member of Parliament - Argenteuil— La Petite-Nation, Quebec and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Rural Economic Development. “Exploring inventive methods to oversee and harness these resources has the potential to open fresh avenues for eco-friendly solutions. Consequently, we can anticipate reduced emissions and the creation of sustainable employment opportunities for our workforce. Our collaboration with FPInnovations is

charting the course towards a more environmentally sustainable Canada.”

VINCI Construction’ Centre Technique Amériques has tested and submitted to the Ministry conclusive preliminary results on mixtures containing 15% lignin as a replacement for bitumen. Eurovia Québec, prime contractor for this new trial, had already participated in an initial trial of a bituminous mix with a 10% substitution rate in Quebec City.

“The road we built on

Raymond Blvd. in Québec City in 2021 with a ligninbased asphalt showed no signs of weakness compared with conventional mixtures after two years,” remarked Yvan Paquin, Technical Director, Eurovia Québec. “We are enthusiastic about continuing to participate in this innovative project since we believe in the importance of decarbonization in the pavement industry, and we are confident that lignin will be one of the solutions enabling us to achieve our carbon neu-

trality objectives.”

In addition to the monitoring performed during the preparatory stages, MTMD will monitor the bitumen and asphalt production processes to assess their properties. Performance monitoring will also be carried out on the road section, as well as on a section identified as “control”, in order to evaluate the evolution in performance of the asphalt mixture and this technology over time. Caterpillar Celebrates 50,000th Wheeled Excavator

This year, Caterpillar announces production of its 50,000th wheel excavator, a Cat M318 Next Gen model, adding another 25,000 units to the total in just 11 years.

In 1984, Caterpillar, Eder and Zeppelin Baumaschinen, the Cat dealer in Germany, introduced a new wheeled excavator line, offering four models under the Cat Eder brand. Eight years later, the line became a 100% Cat product with a designated wheel excavator team. Twenty-eight years later, in 2012, Caterpillar celebrated production of its 25,000th wheel excavator. This year, Caterpillar has produced its 50,000th wheel excavator, a Cat M318 Next Gen model, adding another 25,000 units to the total in just 11 years.

Europe and South Korea were among the first adopters of this new solution. However, the combination of speed, power, versatility and ability to operate a wide range of hydraulic tools has the Cat

Wheel Excavator line growing in popularity in China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North America and other world markets. Manitoba Announces Intake For Quarry Rehabilitation Program

Continued Support for Projects Protects Against Environmental Impacts: Wharton

The Manitoba government is now accepting applications for the Quarry Rehabilitation on Private and Municipal Land Program, Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Jeff Wharton announced in June.

“Our government continues to make targeted investments to support the increased interest in Manitoba as a world-class mining destination,” said Wharton. “We are pleased to announce the start of intakes for the Quarry Rehabilitation on Private and Municipal Land Program, which supports the rehabilitation of depleted pits and quarries on private and municipal lands.”

Owners of private and municipal land with a registration certificate or private quarry permit issued since 1992 are eligible for a grant of

up to $200,000 for new rehabilitation projects that:

• protect the environment against adverse effects;

• minimize detrimental impact on adjoining lands;

• minimize hazards to public safety; and

• leave the site in a state that is compatible with adjoining land uses.

Up to $1.8 million in funding will be available through

the 2023-24 program. The minister noted the Quarry Rehabilitation on Private and Municipal Land Program has provided $13 million in funding to 130 projects over the last three years.

Eligible project activities include:

• sloping and grading;

• moving oversized boulders and other materials;

• spreading overburden and topsoil; and

• purchasing seed to cover graded areas.

Applications will be open until July 20. Successful grant recipients will be notified by the end of August. Approved projects must be completed by Nov. 30. SP

Yanmar Takes A Green Challenge For 2050

This year summer’s extreme weather has left few in doubt that the environment is under pressure.

Helping turn the tide on climate change is everyone’s responsibility – including companies. Yanmar Compact Equipment is happy to play its part – and recently signed up to the Yanmar Green Challenge, a Yanmar Group initiative.

With the northern hemisphere experiencing a summer of searing temperatures, extreme weather and rampant fires in 2023, the longpredicted consequences of a warming planet were plain to see. But averting a climate emergency is still within our reach, and governments, individuals and companies can make a difference.

Yanmar Compact Equipment is committed to adopting more sustainable practices – and to helping its customers and users of its products to do the same. The company, part of the Yanmar Group, is committed to creating a sustainable future and, along with its fellow Group companies, recently launched the Yanmar Green Challenge 2050 to help achieve this aim.

The challenge commits the entire company to be free from greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To achieve that, action needs to happen today. These actions can be divided into three areas – to reduce the greenhouse gasses the company makes in its own operations, to maximise the reuse of resources – and to help its customers also achieve these same objectives.

Commenting on the commitment, Yanmar CE’s CEO Giuliano Parodi said: “The Yanmar Green Challenge 2050 starts with us. If we all play our part and show our commitment, then we will be in a position to convince our customers and business partners to follow our lead and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions too. Green Challenge in practice

The Green Challenge is pulling together individual initiatives that were already ongoing into a cohesive ‘big idea’. To make Yanmar CE’s manufacturing cleaner, the company is reducing its energy use – through more effective insulation of its buildings and fitting extensive solar panels on the roofs of factories. Sourcing green energy and increasing energy independence will lower Yanmar’s carbon footprint – and also reduce overheads. This process will take time to complete, but the direction of travel is clear.

Progress will be redoubled when it comes to product innovation. The process of making engines even more fuel efficient continues, and Yanmar has recently unveiled an all-electric range of compact excavator, compact wheel loader and compact tracked carrier. New tech is also being considered – particularly

the potential of hydrogen to power the company’s machines. The electrification of machines brings tangible benefits for the climate – but for customers too. They are quieter, cleaner and require less maintenance – boosting uptime and productivity.

The materials Yanmar makes its products from is also under constant scrutiny. Today, machines are made from steel, plastics, rubber etc – and these aren’t easily substituted for greener materials. But as cleaner alternatives appear they will be embraced, and Yanmar is working hard to find smarter ways to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ materials and components.

Business benefits of going Green

Doing good for the climate will also have associated business benefits. The Green Challenge will help strengthen the Yanmar brand compared to its competitors, help it become more attractive to investors and attract and retain talent.

This summer’s extreme weather conditions are likely to become commonplace if insufficient action is taken to avert climate change. Environmental legislation will undoubtedly increase, and those companies already advanced in making the circular economy will benefit.

Hyster Awarded For Clean Powered Material Handling Equipment

Hyster Company announces its selection as a 2023 Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics magazine.

Fire Marshalling In Menzies Bay

M+B Menzies Bay Division was the first union camp I worked for.

The I.W.A. (International Woodworkers of America) was formed in 1937. At one time it had over twenty thousand members and now are part of the United Steelworkers Union. When I started you had to work for thirty

days before you were hired full time, like being on probation. Now I think it’s ninety days.

Well I got my thirty days in and was hired. Logging back then had lots of entry level jobs, tree planting, set-

ting chokers and hanging chains on the boom. These jobs were on the bottom end of the pay scale. Once you had some experience and were qualified you could move up to the higher paying jobs. In 1978, I was twenty-six and

already had over ten years of logging experience. The Yarding and Loading department (Y&L) had six steel spars and five grapple yarders along with various types of log loaders. Once the foremen found out I had

some logging experience, I filled in at lots of various machines.

I was in the marshalling yard one morning, when I could see an older-looking foreman heading over to talk with the other foremen. Jim Amos was his name, he was the Fire Marshal. He says to Vic Bortolotto, “I need a helper today.”

“Here’s Kenny Wilson,” says Vic. “He’s an experienced logger; he can help you.”

Into his pickup we went, over to the Fire Shed where all the hoses and pumps and other equipment for fighting fire was kept. We got to talking about our logging history, I mentioned my family was from Duncan; Jim mentioned he had some experience down there. I mentioned my Dad’s name was Dennis Wilson, and right away he said, “So, you’re Smitts’ kid.” Apparently Jim was a foreman for a trucking outfit around Duncan and Mill Bay. My Dad said he drove a pickup truck with dual exhaust stacks; it was a hot truck in those days!

We loaded a fire pump, some hoses, and a forty-five gallon drum into his pickup. Then we drove behind the fire shed, where a couple of HDX trucks with water tanks on the back (slip-ons) were parked. There was also a half dozen or so Ford F-500 trucks with tanks on the back that I could drive.

“Can you drive one of these?” Jim asked.

“No, I’m not a truck driver,” I answered.

“Good,” he said. “I like driving but they say I’m getting too old.”

When the HDX was warmed up, Jim said, “Follow me, we’re going to Iron River.”

We parked the HDX at the Iron River gate and went up the Oyster River Mainline to the first aid shack, which was like another marshalling yard. We would drive around and find spots were it was suitable to fill up the big water tanks on the back of the HDX. One place had a small creek about three feet wide and a couple of inches deep. We placed the fortyfive gallon drum with the bottom cut out in the creek so the water could run into it. At the other end he put an eight-foot piece of hard plastic pipe into the large hole of the drum, then he screwed an adaptor on the end to hook a fire hose to. The fire hose went to the road where we placed a sign that read, “Fire Tanker Fill-up.”

I helped Jim for a few days moving fire trucks around the claim and setting up tanker fill up spots. We had some good conversations driving around. It turns out I went to school with his son Denny and daughter Brenda. Denny was employed at Menzies and sister Brenda was married to Earl Einarson who also worked there, along with older brother Larry Amos.

When we were down at Iron River and Jim wanted to get me back to the marshalling yard at Menzies, he would drop me off at my place about an hour early from quitting time and said that he would fill in the time card for me. What a guy! SP

Trucker’s Million Mile Club

There are so many obstacles out on the road that drivers encounter everyday: weather, road conditions, and other drivers’ actions are just a few the drivers must attend with.

The more you drive, the higher the odds are that you’ll eventually hit something or something will hit you. For the drivers in the Trucker’s Million Mile Club, they obviously know how to stay safe and not let this happen.

A trucking company recently recognized a driver for hitting an unbelievable safety milestone. One of their drivers reached an astonishing 10 million safe miles.

The driver, appropriately named Larry Miles, has “been around the world over 400 times in a truck, without a single incident or accident,” according to the company. Either way, Miles must be doing something right to have hit even half of 10 million miles safely.

Truck driver Barry Queebodeaux was celebrated by his trucking company with a banquet after he is said to have driven 9 million safe miles during his career.

It can take a single driver

around eight-nine years to log a million miles. Whenever a driver logs safe miles, they should be extremely proud of themselves.

When asked how he achieved the 9-million-mile safety milestone, Barry said, “I just pay attention to all my surroundings, I am always observing everything around me. I have to make sure to watch out for other people because you never know what they are thinking.”

Barry said that while he does miss his family while he’s out on the road, he plans to log some more safe miles behind the wheel. “When I am home, we really enjoy that time together because we don’t get that very often! A lot of people ask me ‘Barry, when are you going to finally retire?’ I tell them heck! Why retire? I’m having too much fun!”

There are safe drivers and then there are safe drivers.

Ralph Lendi is clearly one of

the safest. The tractor trailer driver has logged more than 7 million miles behind the wheel and has never been in an accident or received a ticket. Not once.

Seven million miles is obviously a big number, but the statistic is even more mindboggling when put into context.

A trip to the moon, for example, would take about 239,000 miles. If Ralph were an astronaut, he would have traveled between the Earth and moon more than 29 times. That’s a lot of traveling.

A few more numbers to consider, if Ralph has worked around 40-plus years. Of course, he didn’t work every day of every year, but for the sake of simplicity in mathematics, let’s pretend he did. If that were the case, Ralph would have averaged more than 479 miles per day without any problems.

When asked his secret for safe driving, Ralph said, “If I

had to give one piece of advice to anybody, space. Leave yourself room around everybody else.”

He also stressed the importance of candy. Ralph keeps plenty on hand to give out to anybody who wants it.

The Women in Trucking Association (WIT), recently recognized Candy Bass, a truck driver, with five decades of experience behind the

wheel. Candy has 6 million accident-free miles according to WIT and earned the WIT Driver of the Year award in 2023.

Bass is a member of WIT and OOIDA and earned the TA Petro Citizen Driver award in 2016. Bass is also involved in charity work with organizations including the St. Christopher Foundation, Hats for Heroes, Special

Tim Dean, a truck driver in Omaha, Nebraska, celebrated a huge milestone as well. He achieved 5 million accident-free miles. This was something he never imagined.

“I never would have thought I was going to get 5 million,” Dean said. “I credit the support from my family, co-workers, and the company’s dedication to safe driving. “

“It’s worth celebrating. It is quite an accomplishment,” Dean said. He feels extremely fortunate to have a supporting company that stresses safety as its driving force.

Those that know him best are not surprised, including Werner president and CEO Derek Leathers.

“The safe miles are really just a reflection of who he is. He takes his job very seriously,” Leathers described.

Surrounded by his family and coworkers celebrating him, Dean shared a message about safety being the driving force. “When you release that brake, the only important thing is driving the truck safely,” Dean said.

His commitment to safety

and mentorship to other drivers has been invaluable.

“I’m probably prouder of his commitment to mentoring and coaching other drivers,” Leathers added. “He spends time every time I see him talking to other drivers, coaching them on how to be safe.”

Many corporations have celebrations and ceremonies honoring their drivers for their accomplishments.

The Million Miler celebration is a two-day event hosted for drivers and their guests, which has been a company tradition since 1995. In addition to the awards ceremony, drivers are celebrated by office employees in an Honored Driver Walk of Fame and breakfast at company headquarters followed by an afternoon of activities and socializing in downtown Chattanooga with office staff and company leadership. Each driver also received a personalized award and company merchandise, including Million Miler jackets.

Tim Burnett, a truck driver in Marcy, New York, didn’t think much of it when his supervisor sent him out on an errand. But when he returned, he was welcomed by a

banner along with family and friends cheering. That’s when Tim found out he’d officially made it to 3 million accidentfree miles!

During close to 30 years of driving, he’s gained impressive experience driving a variety of equipment and he takes pride in his safety and expertise.

“I was involved in the operation of tandem 48-foot double trailers which really taught me the importance of having a solid routine, taking my time and getting a good visual when hooking up and breaking apart doubles!”

He estimates that out of 3 million safe miles, nearly 1.8 million were driving with a second trailer tagging along on the NYS Thruway between Utica, New York, and the Buffalo region of New York. Tim also guesses that there were over a thousand “hooks” and “breaks” of double trailers each year.

“My first safety man in Pennsylvania said you drive the way you feel. You feel good; you drive good.”

In The Beginning

Author’s note: As I began writing A Trucker’s Tale, I imagined myself having conversations with other truckers, as you will read.

Trucking has been an integral part of my life for over 60 years, and my book was an attempt to share many of my fondest memories which took place throughout these trucking years. These events are, at times, humorous, sad, hilarious, unbelievable, and some even came about due to just plain stupidity. Most truckers, if not all, have experienced similar events and situations, and I am fairly certain each of you will be able to identify with either the people or events contained herein. All these stories happened, although I will ask your indulgence if some sound too absurd. Surely, you truckers know that each “fishing story” grows, and somehow becomes more interesting, each time it is retold. My “fishing stories” have never grown to this extreme level, but everyone has had to listen to some awfully tall truck driver yarns spun by numerous drivers.

I was born into a trucking family, and as soon as I could talk, I began pestering my dad with the question, “When can I ride with you in a truck?” Each time I asked, he would remind me that I could ride with him when I was old enough to climb into the truck by myself without any help. I must have been five or six years old when I climbed onto the running board (without cheating) and crawled up into the Mack. From that first day, I have been addicted to the smell of diesel fuel, diesel

fumes, and almost everything else having to do with diesel.

Even before I was in my teens, my dad gave me the following advice, “Whatever you choose to do in life, just stay the hell out of the trucking business!” It seemed that he was not the only trucking father to offer this advice, because several years ago, I was privileged to be the keynote speaker at a Maryland Motor Truck Association’s Annual Truck Drivers Championship awards ceremony. I began my talk by asking how many of the several hundred truckers in attendance grew up in trucking families and the majority of the drivers had raised their hands. My next question asked them how many of their fathers had told them to “stay the hell out of the trucking business.” Damned nearly every hand was again raised, and the room immediately filled with laughter caused by the realization that we all had become truckers after none of us had taken dad’s advice.

I am pretty sure my father offered this advice because he knew how damned aggravating the trucking profession can be sometimes. He understood the nature of trucking, in that just when you thought things were going great, unseen forces always seemed to throw the proverbial “wrench” into your tasks, whether they presented themselves as flat tires, lights going out, hoses bursting, bad weather delaying your trip, or those cursed

weigh stations no trucker enjoys. You kindred truckers have all experienced these unseen forces, and although you know damned well they are going to continue dogging you, you are still behind the wheels of the big rigs. Evidently, we are all gluttons for punishment! I suppose it is that once trucking gets into our blood, we are hooked, and love it or not, most of us stay at it our entire lives…in one form or another.

Vacationers and businesspersons see some of the landscape while traveling, but only the truck drivers get to enjoy the grandeur of the United States, and Canada, from high up in a truck. While crossing bridges, the tall concrete walls and jersey barriers prevent the fourwheelers from the marvelous views of the lakes, rivers, or gorges they are crossing.

How about the views you observe, though it is extremely hard to adequately describe them, such as driving across Staten Island at daybreak, when you crest a rise in the highway and are treated to the sight of the sun, as an enormous fiery red ball, perched dead-center between the two supports of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge? Imagine the 40-yearold photo image burned in your brain after you topped the hill on I-70 West in Hancock, MD, about a mile before the intersection of I-68. Just after midnight, the numerous, towering halogen highway lights are glittering off the bare limbs of the neighboring apple orchard which had very recently been completely covered by sleet and freezing rain. The scene resembled an ice forest! Hardly a day goes by that you truckers are not treated to sights such as these, and it helps to make the job of truck driving fun and interesting.

Truck drivers also learn to conquer the types of fears very few other drivers are lucky enough not to have to experience. Imagine coming down Jellico Mountain in a freezing fog so thick you can-

not see anything ahead but a very faint glimpse of the white lines of the road, so all you can do is creep down the mountain in a very low gear. You certainly cannot see what is behind you, although you have your four-ways flashing to warn those drivers coming-up behind you. You cannot pull over and stop on the shoulder, mainly due to not being able to see the shoulder, but also because you are afraid another truck will think you are still

traveling and hit the rear of your trailer. What thoughts go through your mind when you finally run out of the fog at the bottom of the mountain, and are then amazed to see the 3 ½ to 4 inch long, horizontal icicles attached to, and sticking straight back from your side mirrors? Well, you wipe the sweat from your brow, and you might even have to change into a new pair of pants. You probably add one last prayer to the list of prayers you of-

Peterbilt Celebrates 100,000th Model 389

Peterbilt celebrated production of the 100,000th Model 389 at its Denton, Texas manufacturing plant on September 7th.

The Model 389 was introduced in 2006 and this 100,000th truck represents the hard work of designers, engineers and plant employees to create and manufacture the most iconic truck on North American highways today. As part of the celebration, Peterbilt presented the milestone truck, equipped with the limited-release Model 389X special edition package, to Massey Motor Freight, a nationwide freight shipping service based in Nacogdoches, Texas.

“We are extremely pleased to present the 100,000th Model 389 to Massey Motor Freight,” said Jason Skoog, Peterbilt general manager and PACCAR vice president.

“Troy Massey is a longtime Peterbilt customer who recognizes the craftmanship, performance and durability of the Model 389 and is the perfect customer to receive this milestone truck.”

Founded in 2016 by Troy and Abby Massey, Massey Motor Freight is dedicated to providing fast, on-time deliv-

Truck driver Allen Parker was the 2021 recipient of the CVSA’s International Driver Excellence Award. In his 34 years as a professional driver, Allen has driven more than four million miles without an accident.

Allen took the opportunity to offer words of safety advice to other truck drivers:

“To achieve the miles I have driven is great, but they come one mile at a time. Focusing too far ahead or behind removes my focus from where I am now. Treat the motoring public around you as if it is your family in those cars and trucks. Try to anticipate the movements of others. And use common sense,” Allen said.

Dedicated driver Edwina and her family participated in the Million Mile Walk

of Fame at corporate headquarters. The company drivers were awarded more than $900,000 in safe driver bonuses.

“This celebration is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Nick Hobbs, chief operating officer and president of contract services. “It takes a great amount of patience and dedication to drive two million-plus safe miles, and we’re honored to recognize the men and women who go above and beyond each day.

During the celebration, corporate employees lined four flights of stairs to congratulate drivers with cheers, applause, and high fives. In addition to the Walk of Fame, drivers were treated to an honorary lunch, an awards ceremony, and a visit with company leadership. Drivers will also receive recognition on the Million Mile Wall.

Cindy Williams was born and raised in a small farming community with a proud rural heritage in Lapeer County, Michigan. She is certainly no stranger to trucks. In 1975, she began fueling trucks and changing tires until she gained enough seniority to begin shuttling trucks from

one location to another. Cindy began her career as an over the road truck driver in 1979.

Cindy has a million safe miles under her, and she continues to drive safely. In 2017, while attending the Richard Crane Memorial Truck Show, Cindy, was chosen as the recipient of the Women in Trucking Award (WIT). She says she was thrilled and so excited to be the winner of the WIT award. Along with the award, the friendships made there, and the atmosphere of the show, are just some of the things that keep bringing her back year after year.

When asked what changes Cindy has seen or experienced from a women’s point of view in the trucking industry, she simply replied, “I never drove from a woman’s point of view.”

This year, she has been named the Grand Marshal for the 27th Annual Richard Crane Memorial Truck Show.

Being part of the safe million-mile club is something to be very proud of, and to be a part of this exclusive club, being safety conscious is vital. Being a professional truck driver requires a lot of skill and a great deal of responsibility for the

The green hydrogen used in Alstom’s Coradia iLint train is produced by an Accelera HySTAT-100-10 electrolyzer, which is owned and operated in Quebec by project partner Harnois Énergies.

The Coradia iLint train entered service in Canada on June 17 as part of Alstom’s demonstration project, aiding in the development and marketability of hydrogen propulsion technology in North America. The train is operating with passengers on board for the entire summer season on the railway of Train de Charlevoix, an iconic line crossing the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Charlevoix region in the Province of Quebec, Canada.

A key element of the project is the utilization of Accelera fuel cells in conjunction with green hydrogen. Mounted to the roof of the train, the fuel cells work to convert hydrogen into electricity, which powers the train.
