EDITORIAL

DEAR SUPERIOR MAGAZINE READERS, W

elcome to our second issue in 2019

This time we got so many Fashion Editorials we wanted to show you that we decided to create a more or less pure Fashion Editorial issue. The exclusive fashion editorials have been contributed by photographers and stylists from all over the world. It’s Asami N. from Japan, Bea v. Winterfeldt-Heuser from Germany, Julia Malinowska from Spain, Panayiotis Panouklias from Greece, Sarah Monrose from UK, Tobias Meier from Canada and Vanessa Danisch from Germany. Also, we show you the Editorial “Exposed” from DACH Showroom, a collaboration between Berlin Showroom, the Austrian Fashion Association and Mode Suisse which showcases an exclusive selection of Autumn/Winter 2019/20 collections, ranging from women‘s wear, men‘s wear and unisex to accessories, to a broad international audience during Paris Fashion Week. As cover story we have chosen NEON by Jose Espaillat from USA. „The pieces in this Fashion Editorial were inspired with microscopic nature. Mio and I thought of creating environment that will look like the model is seen as part of this nano world and seen through a microscopic lense.“ is how he describes the idea behind the story. For the category Art + Design we interviewed the artist Mariana Edinger who lives and works currently in New York City. Enjoy our Superior Magazine # 67 issue... CREATIVE APPROACH

„Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.“ - Thomas Merton

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Different city-vibes in the style of multicultural and gender-independent individuals. Fabric in all shapes and forms. Beloved people surrounding me. The cosmos itself.

ABOUT THE FASHION EDITORIAL

Alex, Giulia and I wanted to create an offbeat situation implying the small and unique techno-scene in Munich. CREATIVE APPROACH

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION ABOUT THE FASHION EDITORIAL

17

Jose Espaillat is a photographer currently living in New York City who specializes in portraiture, editorial, and commercial. He has the versatile ability to take a clean portrait, but also fuse beauty and fantasy to bring any editorial to life. His work has been featured in various print publications. As a child born in the Dominican Republic, Espaillat always had a passion for photography. He would spend much of his time capturing photos of his peers and surroundings. Yet, it was his move in 2012 to New York City that inspired him to stop studying medicine and pursue his love. The city’s atmosphere of endless possibilities mixed with his artistic soul led him to enrol at the School of Visual Arts for a BFA in Photography where he graduated in 2018. Nature, Sci-Fi Movies, and futuristic fashion. The pieces in this editorial were inspired with microscopic nature. Mio and I thought of creating environment that will look like model is seen as part of this nano world and seen through a microscopic lense.

JULIA MALINOWSKA ORIGIN PROFESSION

Barcelona, Spain Photographer & Art Producer

CREATIVE APPROACH

I am a storyteller, an emotion seeker, a colour addict and slow movement fan. I believe that to create great and timeless visual images are needed a special set of mind, time and curiosity.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

My photography is a kaleidoscope of places, people, feelings, details and daily routines. As I mix photographic styles and also work as a documentary photographer with long term projects connected with human rights and positive social changes, the powerful visual language and storytelling have to be complex to impact the viewers but also gentle and attractive to generate a reaction.

ABOUT THE FASHION EDITORIAL

Pola Rise a polish singer, songwriter and composer. Her debut was in 2015 with „The Power of Coincidence “- blurring the boundaries between electropop and alternative music. She was the only Polish artist playing alongside Ed Sheeran, Selah Sue or London Grammar at her own Deezer Session. The colour blue represents her thoughtful lyrics and is shown in most of her photos and album covers. The unique blue outfits from Bego Palacios made her look like from a gloomy fairy-tale.18

TOBIAS MEIER ORIGIN PROFESSION

19

Vancouver, B.C., Canada Photographer

CREATIVE APPROACH

I am an internationally awarded storytelling photographer working under the name 2b+photo. My work specializes in high end fashion photography for couture. My portfolio includes international designers who have been featured at Paris Fashion Week. Previous experience includes feature film work in different fields of visual effects including lighting, environment and digital matte painting.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

As a photographer I strive to create photographs with a lot of depth and details so that the viewer sees more and more as they look, hopefully becoming entranced by the photo.

ABOUT THE FASHION EDITORIAL

It is what would happen if the catwalks of Paris collided with Star Wars. It is a glimpse into a world where clones protect the high powered and floating in outer space is the norm. The scenes are mysterious and open to interpretation. One can only guess what the woman pointing to the map of earth is saying, or what the button a woman presses is for. It is a flexible storyline, ultimately determined by the viewer’s own imagination.

SARAH MONROSE

© ANNA THOMA

ORIGIN PROFESSION

London & Brighton, UK Photographer, Artistic director & Make-up artist

CREATIVE APPROACH

After being a model from the age of 15 in Paris and London, becoming a make-up artist & photographer felt like a natural progression. My work is always quite feminine as well as being very much inspired by fashion and design from older eras.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I take inspiration mainly from the 50’s and 60’s, the fashion pages from French ELLE Magazine from the late 80’s to the 90’s and the great Sarah Moon

ABOUT THE FASHION EDITORIAL

In this story I tried to convey the feeling of loneliness, the difficulties in moving on and to make steps to leave behind someone, a place or a situation.

ASAMI N. ORIGIN PROFESSION

CREATIVE APPROACH

We are not interested in career or titles... to be honest. Our goal is just make ‘Surprise’ someone. Give ‘Happiness’ someone. Make ‘Laugh and Smile’ someone. When SOMEONE did that by our creation, SOMEONE must be makes us happy.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION ABOUT THE FASHION EDITORIAL

Tokyo, Japan

Love. Ugliness. Or escape from noisiest Bipolar planet. “The collection is called ‘Sans’, it’s the French word for without. It’s about the last ten years of my own grandmother’s life and the effects her death on others including myself”. By Alicia Perrillo, Sans Designer Only ‘Titles’ or ‘Famous something’ is meaningless. ‘Fashion’ without ‘Love’ is also meaningless. Histories, Traditions, Fairy-tales, Music, Love ... This is what we call Fashion.

NEW YORK

MARIANA EDINGER

Painting is like a daydream self-aware expression Interview ■ Tom Felber Photos ■ Mariana Edinger

#67 | 2019

56

Her powerful stylized figures composed by gestural strokes and strong colours, has a unique look on the new figurative expressionism. Superior Magazine talked to Mariana Edinger the Brazilian painter who approaches her work as an open journal. Mariana, was art already your desire since ever? What were the steps of your art career?

Absolutely! It’s something that I love to do. Things progressively pushed me forward and it’s in constant progress. I took art classes, graduated in fine arts and also in visual communication in Brazil, I’m a designer too. Then I went to study painting at the National Academy of Arts in New York. It was an important foundation for my work. I believe that you have to know the rules, so you can break it as you want it. I’m constantly in the studio researching and developing my approach to the paintings. You are working as figurative painter focusing on the female figures. Why have you chosen this focus?

can become part of the work and the inspiration mostly comes from memorizing feelings. Music, poetry, and wine helps it too! You are born and raised in Brazil and moved 5 years ago to New York. Why have you chosen New York? How do both, Brazil and New York influence your art?

Brazil is bucolic and chaotic. It’s almost surreal! There’s a lot of diversity too. I’m from Curitiba and I lived in São Paulo for a couple of years. Mostly of my friends there are artists, musicians, etc. and I found a lot of inspiration through exchanging with them. Meanwhile I was growing up in Brazil, New York was always a reference to what I was looking for. Inspired by Andy Warhol and the factory, Patti Smith, the Chelsea hotel and so on, all that unique energy and art made me go to New York. The city is in constant change, but still there’s so much on the contemporary art and music scene to get inspired by and to contribute with.

I don’t think that I chose to paint female figures it naturally became what I do. The figures make me feel connected to the canvas and I find the subject interesting to explore. My characters are influenced by the female imagery across contemporary culture, myths and art history. I like the mystery on how the figures emerges to the canvas and gets its own personality. I enjoy the performance of painting, there’s a mind game that you have to put on the canvas by being present and finding moments that will lead to what’s next. I portrait how I perceive the world by using the figures, colours and atmosphere to narrate it. Sometimes it gets distorted, mellow, fragmented, diffused, excited and so on...But in the end, a painting should be about the painting itself. What inspires you for your art?

My inspiration comes while working. Painting is like a daydream self-aware expression. It comes from how I perceive and contemplate moments. Any experience 57

Photo Livia Fontana

You also work as Art Director and production designer for movies and advertising. Does this interact with your work as artist? No doubt!... In different ways. The creative energy intersects in both of the practices but it comes from different meanings. For me, making design for productions it’s predictable while making art it’s not. Is there any project which you really would love to realize in the future? I don’t usually plan what to do next... but I’m always up for collaboration projects! Right now, I have a solo show at Boiler Galeria and I’m participating on an exhibition at MuMA museum, both in Brazil. I am about to do an art residency in Europe to prepare for an exhibition that I am looking forward too! Thank you for the interview!
