Abstracts Sederholm House next to Senate Square is the oldest building in the centre of Helsinki. It is surrounded by taller buildings, which are currently covered up. The New City Museum will open at Sederholm House in 2016. For the Helsinki City Museum, the new museum is not only a building, but also a new approach. From early on, the Helsinki City Museum realised that this move to new premises would be an opportunity to see its operations from a new perspective. “In addition to the content of exhibitions, we are focusing on museum visits as comprehensive customer experiences,” says Project Manager Ulla Teräs. According to Teräs, it was clear from the onset that the new museum would be created in cooperation with local people. Participation, openness and collaboration are popular topics in the museum sector. Museums are seeking to be more open towards
customers and have experimented with various forms of interaction. Nevertheless, the perspective is often from within the museum looking outwards. Customers are seen as objects rather than partners. The effectiveness of museum services is not under question, nor is the intrinsic value of museums. The Helsinki City Museum has switched perspectives. Ulla Teräs believes the issues of participation, openness and collaboration to be crucial for museums. “They can bring new energy to the core of museum operations,” she says. “It is a question of purpose: Why do museums exist? What is our significance for our local community and environment?”
Reeta Holma, Information Officer at the Helsinki City Museum, writes about the ways in which the museum is including Helsinki residents in the planning process. Partici-
pation is also an overarching theme for the other articles in this issue. A strong sense of community has revitalised the Mäntyharju Museum. The Satakunta Museum and Rauma Maritime Museum have addressed topical issues in society through documentation projects. The Design Museum is coordinating a growing network that serves as a forum for companies interested in making use of design.
In addition, this issue of the Museo quarterly takes a stand for the accessibility of culture. Museum services must be available to all. To be launched in spring 2015, the Museum Card is one way of attracting more visitors. For an annual fee of EUR 54, the card enables its holder to make an unlimited number of museum visits. m
