To Our Current and Prospective Students: Schenectady County Community College has seen tremendous growth in recent years. For our upcoming Summer and Fall semesters, we anticipate even more area residents will discover what a gem we have right here in the Capital Region at SCCC! Increasingly, Schenectady County Community College is becoming a first-choice college for those who have recently graduated from high school, as well as older students returning to college to develop their skills, expand their knowledge, begin a new career and increase their marketability to employers and four-year transfer schools. SCCC is becoming one of the state’s premier community colleges. We are excited to announce: • Multi-million dollar projects for a state-of-the-art School of Music addition and the College Suites student housing project opened this past academic year. • Our Center City location across from Proctors continues to host robust enrollment with scores of courses offered. An 11,900 square-foot expansion of the site opened this spring. • We have new programs in Alternative Energy Technology, Casino and Gaming Management, Chemical Dependency Counseling, Medical Coding and Billing and Nutrition, all high-demand fields; new Drama and Honors concentrations, and the Business A.A.S. is available in a weekend-only hybrid format to better fit into the lives of our students. • An agreement with CDTA allows any registered student to ride the bus free during the Fall and Spring semesters. This has already proven to be a popular and useful service for commuting students. • Our partnership with SUNY Delhi keeps growing as we continue to offer a seamless transition for our graduates to go on to earn four-year degrees. A new four-year transfer program in Criminal Justice has been approved. • Our student population continues to grow. Increasingly, students and parents are realizing the value and exceptional academic opportunity offered at SCCC. As you can see, there is a lot happening at SCCC. We hope you can grow with us as you continue your educational journey. Quintin B. Bullock, D.D.S. President

Medical Coding and Billing Certificate SCCC now offers a Medical Coding and Billing Certificate program. By the year 2014 all healthcare providers seeking Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement must use electronic healthcare records (HERs) for recording and managing patient records. Therefore, this certificate was designed to prepare individuals to work in hospitals, physician offices and other healthcare facilities as medical coders and billers. It will also provide an understanding of medical terminology essential to the language of medicine. Students will study principles of healthcare information management, electronic record keeping and information sharing, billing and reimbursement and international medical coding systems. The program was designed using skills and knowledge required for medical coding and billing established by the American Healthcare Information Management Association (AHIMA). Completion of this certificate program will help prepare graduates for the first level of certification as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA). Although certification is not a requirement for most entry level coding positions, it may be required for advancement in the profession. For more information about enrolling in the new program, please contact the SCCC Office of Admissions at (518) 381-1366. For more information on certification and electronic medical records, please visit the organization’s website at www.ahima.org.

Liberal Arts: Honors Concentration

T

he Honors Concentration offers highly motivated students a cohesive learning community and an enriched curriculum that provides a supportive atmosphere for them to engage in rigorous academic inquiry. The Honors curriculum fosters critical thinking, effective communication, appreciation for diversity, and engagement in service learning. Admission Requirements • A completed Honors Concentration Application (separate from and in addition to the application for admission to the College) • A 90 cumulative grade point average (home-schooled students should provide evidence of academic achievement and GED recipients should submit a certificate with sub-test scores.) • A letter of recommendation from a high school teacher (home schooled and GED applicants should request an interview by contacting the Honors Coordinator.) • An essay written specifically for the honors application Students enrolling in the new Honors Concentration for 2013-2014 will receive half off their tuition through SCCC Foundation scholarships. The Foundation will invest approximately $68,000 to provide scholarships for the first cohort of 20 students in the new concentration.

For more information, please contact: Eileen Abrahams Associate Professor and Honors Coordinator (518) 381-1403 • abrahae@sunysccc.edu www.sunysccc.edu/honors 22

“When I got to Le Moyne as a junior and none of my peers had written a big research paper, I suddenly knew how valuable my time at SCCC was, especially one specific honors course. The class was called “Topics in Literature: Banned Books” and not only was it wildly fun, but I learned how to properly write a research paper about literature. I truly believe that class gave me the head start I needed to stand out amongst my peers in English Literature.”

Brandon Sisson SCCC Teacher Education Transfer/ Liberal Arts major LeMoyne College, Class of 2014 English/Theater major
