Which Program Fits You? Transfer Degree Programs (A.A., A.S.)

are designed to be the first two years of a four-year degree. Students can complete their first two years at SCCC and then transfer to a four-year college. Most students will only need to complete two more years at the four-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree. Career Degree Programs (A.A.S., A.O.S.)

are designed to educate students and prepare them to enter directly into careers after two years of study. Students are prepared to enter the workforce, after gaining hands-on experience in the classroom and through internships. Certificate Programs

are one-year tracks of study. They are designed for students who are interested in exploring an academic major and who want to upgrade their education. These hands-on programs provide real-world experience at the college level.

Expert Faculty SCCC professors are experts in their fields and share their real-world knowledge with students. In addition to being highly regarded educators, SCCC faculty are lawyers, authors, scientists, chefs, business owners and pilots. Through small class sizes, faculty engage students in lively discussions, encouraging questions and meaningful dialogue. Faculty have been recognized with SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence.

Transfer Degree Programs Business Administration (A.S.) If you’re interested in transferring to a four- year college or university for business or accounting, this program will provide you with the right foundation.

Criminal Justice (A.S.) Faculty with real-world experience in the criminal justice field cover the six areas designated by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences—administration of justice, corrections, criminological theory, law adjudication, law enforcement, and research/ analytic methods. Students are then prepared to transfer into related programs at a four-year college or university.

Career Degree Programs Accounting (A.A.S.) Gain an understanding of areas ranging from income tax accounting to cost management. Students are prepared to enter the workplace with the necessary skills to record, evaluate and communicate business transactions.

Business Administration (A.A.S.) Students gain a broad background in business that they can apply to many, diverse professions. Graduates have gone onto jobs in business, industry, finance, insurance and government.

Criminal Justice (A.A.S.) Completion of this program qualifies students to apply for positions with state/local police, corrections and security agencies. Transfer to a four-year institution is also an option.

Emergency Management (A.A.S.) This degree provides introductory level instruction in the organizational and institutional aspects of Emergency Management. Graduates can either enter the workforce or transfer into a bachelor’s degree program related to emergency management, homeland security, organizational communication, political science or public administration.

Fire Protection Technology (A.A.S.) Students completing the degree program receive a foundation in fire service organization, fire fighting, hazardous materials, fire investigation and hydraulics. Career options include professional fire fighting, plant protection and insurance investigation.

Paralegal (A.A.S.) Grads of this American Bar Association- approved program have gone on to be paralegals/legal assistants in law offices, businesses and government agencies.

Supply Chain Management (A.A.S.) Students prepare for entry-level positions in the procurement, transportation, storage, and processing of the materials and information that form the basis of global commerce. Co-operative education opportunities are available with regional companies for qualified students to gain practical experience.

Certificate Programs Criminal Justice (certificate) This is a flexible option for students pursuing employment or those currently employed in the field of law enforcement or private sector security seeking an academic credential. After completion, students can also enroll in the SCCC Criminal Justice A.A.S. degree program.


Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Entrepreneurship (certificate) This innovative certificate is designed for students interested in launching their own business ventures or working in start-up companies, and combines instruction on business plan development with skills essential to ethical business operations and functions.

Fire Science (certificate) The Fire Science Certificate program emphasizes professional training for students who wish to obtain technical skills in fire protection.

General Business (certificate) This program prepares students for jobs in business, industry and government, including retail sales clerk, accounts receivable and accounts payable clerk, file clerk and general office jobs.

Career Degree Programs Casino and Gaming Management (A.A.S.) This program prepares students for direct employment in the casino and gaming management industry with a variety of courses including those in casino management operations, gaming regulatory issues and casino surveillance, as well as a hands-on internship.

Culinary Arts (A.O.S.) In our impressive food labs, students prepare everything from appetizers to desserts. On-campus banquets and a gourmet restaurant provide practical experience and the curriculum also includes restaurant management courses that add to the experience. This program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Foundation Accrediting Commission.

Hotel and Restaurant Management (A.A.S.) Students in this program receive training and develop expertise to learn what it takes to succeed in hotel and restaurant management. After graduating, students can enter the workforce or pursue a four-year degree on the SCCC campus, through a popular partnership between SUNY Delhi and SCCC, or transfer to another college or university.

Beverage Management Concentration This concentration prepares students for direct employment in the industry with a variety of courses including those in the fundamentals of beer and brewing; managing beverage operations; spirits, distillation and mixology; beverage sales and merchandising; and inventory control/ warehouse management. A hands-on internship rounds out the curriculum.

Hospitality and Tourism Management (A.A.S.) Through this exciting program and by interning in the field, you’ll gain a real sense of the industry. Graduates are employed in travel promotion; front office, convention and sales management; meeting planning; and event planning. After graduating, students can enter the workforce or pursue a four-year degree on the SCCC campus, through a popular partnership between SUNY Delhi and SCCC, or transfer to another college or university.

Certificate Programs Assistant Chef (certificate) This one-year program provides training in the restaurant and food service fields with graduates prepared for positions including assistant chef and food service staff.

Hospitality and Tourism (certificate) This one-year program prepares students for entry level convention/hotel sales, front office and event planning support positions.

Liberal Arts Transfer Degree Programs Human Services (A.S.) Students acquire liberal arts knowledge with an understanding of the social and psychological basis of human behavior. After graduation, students are prepared to transfer into a social work and/or related discipline at a four-year college or university.

Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Sciences (A.A.) This program is ideal for students wishing to transfer to a four-year college or university. It provides a foundation for a variety of career goals in fields such as communications, economics, English, fine arts, foreign languages, history, law, political science, psychology, sociology and women’s studies.

Communication Concentration This concentration enables students to gain an understanding of the essential role human communication plays in society, the media and technology, and meets the SUNY Transfer Paths for communication, allowing students to seamlessly transfer to SUNY four-year institutions as communication majors. It prepares students for careers in areas such as media management, social media, advertising, broadcast and mass communication, public relations, and new media information design.

Drama Concentration This concentration enables students to develop and refine performance skills, technical crafts, critical analysis and aesthetic appreciation in preparation for academic success in baccalaureate transfer programs in theatre studies or related liberal arts disciplines.

Honors Concentration This concentration empowers students to achieve academic success at SCCC and prepares them for successful transfer to distinguished baccalaureate programs while providing a learning community and an enriched curriculum in a supportive atmosphere for students to engage in rigorous academic inquiry and effective communication.

Teacher Education Transfer (A.S.) Start on your path toward becoming a teacher through this program, which combines a solid liberal arts foundation with pre-professional courses, ideal for transfer. The program is compliant with all SUNY and State Education Department requirements for a four-year program leading to teacher certification.

Career Degree Programs Chemical Dependency Counseling (A.A.S.) This program prepares students for immediate employment in residential, inpatient and other addiction facilities with emphasis on current practices in prevention, group and family counseling, assessment, case management and psychopharmacology. Graduates of the program will have fulfilled the academic requirements for the Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) application and will immediately be eligible for CASAC Trainee Certification through the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

Early Childhood (A.A.S.) The Early Childhood program includes a hands-on approach with the campus-based Gateway Montessori Preschool providing opportunities for observations and internships in a “best practices” environment. Graduates

are qualified to work with children ages birth to 8 years old in preschools, nursery schools, daycare, public schools, early intervention agencies and Head Start or to operate a child care center.

Human Services (A.A.S.) Students gain a solid theoretical foundation and begin to develop a professional identity. They apply their knowledge and skills during two field internships at local agencies or organizations.

Certificate Programs Chemical Dependency Counseling (certificate) This program is a direct response to the working professional needs in fields such as nursing, counseling, criminal justice, secondary and post-secondary education and substance abuse. It is a professional certificate designed to enhance development in specialized addiction counseling. It satisfies all of the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) academic requirements needed to apply for the Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC).

Early Childhood (certificate) This certificate combines academic rigor and a hands-on approach with the campus-based Gateway Montessori Preschool providing opportunities for observations and internships in a “best practices” environment. The certificate provides general employment opportunities in programs serving children ages birth through five years.

Teaching Assistant (certificate) The certificate provides students with coursework to meet the New York State Education Department requirements for Teaching Assistant.



Math, Science, Technology and Health Transfer Degree Programs Aviation Science (A.S.) The Pilot Option provides students with experience in flight training and permits them to qualify for a Private Pilot Certificate and Instrument Rating, a Commercial Pilot Certificate, and a Flight Instructor Certificate. Flight laboratories are provided by Richmor School of Aviation at the Schenectady County Airport. The Non-Pilot Option allows exploration of other aviation careers including Air Traffic Control, Aviation Management, Accident Investigation and Aviation Administration.

Computer Science (A.S.) Students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer engineering can start with this program. It provides the essential mathematics, science and computer programming experience, as well as a liberal arts foundation.

Mathematics and Science (A.S.) This program is designed to parallel the first two years of four-year college programs in mathematics and science. The degree requirements have the flexibility to meet individual transfer goals in fields including mathematics, chemistry, physics, environmental studies, forensics, engineering and actuarial science.

Nanoscale Science Concentration This concentration prepares graduates to transfer into the interdisciplinary fields of nanoscale science and nanoscale engineering by providing a well-rounded education in mathematics, science, and nanoscale materials. The A.S. program is designed for students wishing to transfer to the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) in

Albany. Students maintaining a grade point average of 3.3 or higher may cross-register for courses at CSNE during their second year.

Nutrition (A.S.) Learn the role of nutrients in human health, nutrition issues and how to plan menus for community and clinical settings. Students will be prepared to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nutrition.

Science (A.S.) This program closely parallels the first two years of a four-year college program so that students can transfer and major in areas including biology, environmental studies, forestry, pharmacy, nursing and physical therapy. Students gain a foundation in mathematics, chemistry and physics, as well as liberal arts.

Biology Concentration This concentration provides students with a strong foundation in science, math, and the liberal arts, which will enable them to transfer to four-year programs in the natural sciences. Coursework in cellular and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology introduce students to both the breadth and depth of the natural sciences.

Career Degree Programs Air Traffic Control (A.A.S.) Students gain the fundamentals of air traffic control and skills needed to support the continuous safe flow of aircraft. By participating in the live control of aircraft traffic at the Schenectady County Airport Control Tower and through simulated scenarios, students effectively learn to respond to normal and emergency situations.


Alternative Energy Technology (A.A.S.)

Certificate Programs

Discover the science and technology behind major sources of alternative energy including wind, solar and fuel cells and their impact on the environment and economic system. Students also learn how alternative power is generated and distributed through the existing power grid.

Computer Desktop Support Specialist (certificate)

Computer Information Systems (A.A.S.) The world of information technology (IT) is always changing. Through this program, students can custom design a program that will provide them with a depth of understanding to either transfer to a four-year college or become an entry-level IT specialist in programming, web development and/or management information systems.

Computer Networking Systems and Cyber Security (A.A.S.) By using industry-standard hardware and software, students gain a theoretical and hands-on foundation in computer networking. This program enables graduates to design computer security strategies, troubleshoot computing environments, install hardware and problem solve, and prepares graduates for employment as network or systems administrators.

Nanoscale Materials Technology (A.A.S.) After completing this program, students are prepared for employment as qualified technicians in the emerging and highly technical semiconductor and superconductor manufacturing industry. A foundation in materials science, chemistry, physics, mathematics and electronics is provided, along with vacuum science, computer aided drafting and thin film deposition techniques.

This one-year program is ideal for students wishing to seek employment as software application specialists, help desk specialists, or information processing specialists.

Murray Avionics Aviation Science

This one-year program prepares students for employment as support personnel for computer network administrators in an industrial or commercial environment.

New Choices Recovery Center Chemical Dependency Counseling

Health Studies (certificate) Begin a health care career with this program designed for students who want to pursue an associate’s degree in an allied health care program. The curriculum includes biological sciences, chemistry and mathematics essential for transfer into a variety of majors including nursing, dental hygiene and radiologic technology.

Medical Coding and Billing (certificate) This program prepares students to work in hospitals, physician offices and other healthcare facilities as medical coders and billers. Students study principles of healthcare information management, electronic record keeping and information sharing, billing and reimbursement and international medical coding systems.

Storage Battery Technology (certificate) Learn how storage batteries store electricity from traditional and alternative energy sources in this one-year program designed to prepare you for entry-level employment in the storage battery industry. Topics covered include electrical circuit design, digital process, and storage battery manufacture.

Music All music programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Transfer Degree Program Performing Arts-Music (A.S.) This program is designed for students who wish to transfer to a four-year degree program such as music education, performance, music therapy or jazz studies. It features rigorous training in performance, theory, ear training, music history and pedagogy. An audition is required for admission into this program.

Career Degree Program Music Audio Technology (A.A.S.) Curriculum in this program provides rigorous training in basic musicianship, contemporary recording and reinforcement technologies, and management and legal responsibilities. A successful audition is required for entry into this program.

Certificate Program Music (certificate) In this one-year program, students develop musicianship through training in performance, basic theory and aural skills, and keyboard. These musical tools prepare students for the entrance audition for the College’s degree programs in Performing Arts: Music, and Music Audio Technology. No audition is required for the Music Certificate program.

SCCC is home to several professional ensembles in residence. The Capital Region Wind Ensemble, the Empire Jazz Orchestra and the Musicians of Ma’alwyck all perform in the Taylor Auditorium.


Help When You Need It! The Student Affairs Division provides programs and services focused on assisting SCCC students in successfully fulfilling their goals and aspirations, including: Academic Advisement

All matriculated students, during their first semester, are assigned to see either a faculty advisor or a professional advisor in the Academic Advisement Center to assist with selection of an academic program, courses, registration and other academic needs. ADA Transition Services (Resources for Students with Disabilities)

The Office of ADA Transition Services uses a collaborative model to develop accommodations and learning strategies for students with permanent and temporary disabilities. The office coordinates resources and creates partnerships to foster an inclusive environment that is accessible and welcoming for all. SCCC is committed to promoting self-advocacy for students with disabilities by providing a positive learning environment. Career and Transfer Services

The Career and Transfer Services Office assists students during their career decision process through exploration of applied learning experiences such as campus employment, internships, volunteer work and off-campus

employment, transfer planning and executing an effective job search for life. The office also coordinates campus career and transfer events and functions to connect students with opportunities. Educational Opportunity Program/ Access

The services available through SCCC’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)/Access provide academic and financial support to historically disadvantaged students who have diverse talents, strengths, experiences and needs. Services include tutoring, career and academic counseling, educational workshops and recognition ceremonies and a modest financial stipend. Schenectady County Community College’s Access programs include the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) and Schenectady Smart Scholars. Financial Aid

The financial aid office at SCCC provides financial assistance to eligible matriculated students who can benefit from further education, but who cannot do so without such assistance. Find out more under “How to Apply” in the back of this viewbook. Veterans Services

This office assumes the major responsibility for helping all student veterans adjust to the campus environment in a

way that enhances and supports learning. The quality of student life is significantly affected by the availability, variety and integrity of services and extra academic support programs on campus. SCCC is recognized by G.I. Jobs magazine as a “Military Friendly School.” Wellness and Support Services

Wellness and Support Services include: ADA Transition Services, Check-In Service to help manage one’s personal and academic life, Student Activities, and the Student Veterans Office. The purpose of this area is to encourage the pursuit of healthy lifestyles that balance academics, leisure, family, and life commitments, using a holistic approach.

Academic Support Services At SCCC, it’s all about you and your success. That’s why we offer many services to help you achieve your goals. The Learning Center/Writing Lab provides academic support through workshops, individual instruction and computer-assisted instruction. You’ll find individualized assistance in the Math Lab and Accounting/Computer Information Systems Lab and through Tutor Services. The TRIO program

provides extra tutoring, skill building workshops, academic counseling and career guidance to eligible students.



Transfer Agreements

SCCC graduates have transferred to schools all over the country. Part of the College’s mission is to offer degree programs that parallel the first two years of programs at four-year institutions, making the transition to another college or university seamless. Through transfer agreements with more than 50 institutions, including those at right, SCCC students can transfer to four-year colleges with junior status in a wide variety of disciplines. SCCC’s athletic teams, the Royals, compete with community and four-year colleges. As a member of Division III, Region III, of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), SCCC teams play those from New York, Massachusetts and Vermont. To round out the college experience, SCCC’s Student Government Association (SGA) offers dozens of clubs including the Aviation Club, Hospitality Club and Student Activities Board. Students also benefit from partnerships with the Schenectady YMCA, CDTA, Proctors, the city of Schenectady (Central Park) and Boulevard Bowling Lanes.

In addition to the SCCC main campus, 78 Washington Avenue, Schenectady, the College offers a variety of classes at SCCC Center City (433 State Street, downtown Schenectady, across from Proctors) and the SCCC Albany Extension Site (112 State Street, Second Floor).

How to Apply for Financial Aid Most of the full time students attending SCCC receive at least one form of financial aid, and almost $22,000,000 in financial aid was awarded to SCCC students in 2014-15. Financial aid staff are available to assist students and their families through the process of applying for federal and state grants and student loans. Students are also able to take advantage of the College’s tuition payment plan to spread their payments over a longer time period. They can also apply for of a myriad of scholarships. The amount of financial aid awards in a student’s financial aid package depends on financial need, as well as the amount of government funds available for distribution. Students need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. SCCC students may be eligible for Federal Pell grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) in addition to several New York state-based award programs. They include the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP); Tuition Assistance Program (TAP); Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS); and New York State National Guard Tuition Incentive Program. Students at SCCC also qualify for the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. Two exciting federal tax credit options are also available for eligible students. The American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Tuition Tax Credit provide valuable tax credits for qualified students and their families that can help reduce the cost of attendance by up to $2,500 per year.
