President’s Message To the Friends of Schenectady County Community College: As I enter my second year as President of Schenectady County Community College, it is my esteemed pleasure to continue serving a growing, diverse and dedicated student body with such a caring and capable faculty and staff. We continue to make great strides in continuing our mission of excellence and accessibility, and the results have been extraordinary. Increasingly, SCCC is becoming a first-choice college for those who have just graduated from high school as well as older students returning to college to develop their skills, expand their knowledge and increase their marketability to employers and four-year transfer schools. Great things are happening at Schenectady County Community College. We are excited to announce:

• We revised our Mission statement and developed a Vision Statement for the institution.

• We developed a comprehensive five-year Strategic Plan, Gateway to Excellence, to guide our actions and planning for the future.

• Our enrollment management plan successfully targeted areas of growth – our student body has grown by over 8 percent for the Fall 2010 semester compared to just a year before. Compared to 10 years ago, we have approximately 2000 more students. Students and parents are realizing the value and exceptional academic opportunity offered at SCCC.

• Exciting new majors in Air Traffic Control, Alternative Energy Technology and Criminal Justice started this fall. A certificate in Storage Battery Technology is also being offered. SCCC is adapting to changing needs in the workforce.

• A revised curriculum now allows us to offer a cutting-edge Computer Networking and Cyber Security A.A.S. degree, as well.

• Our partnership with SUNY Delhi continues to grow as we continue to offer a seamless transition for our graduates to go on to earn four-year degrees here on campus.

• A $50,000 grant from GE has played an important role in our new technology programs.

• The Schenectady County Community College Foundation continues to develop innovative strategies to increase its base of support. We are building new corporate partnerships, expanding our role in grants development, and introducing more friends to SCCC to gain their support of our excellent programs and services. The resources that the Foundation raises allow us to support students in achieving their academic and career goals and provide professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

• We earned an $11.2 million grant – the largest in the state and in the College’s history – as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Affordable Care Act. This is an incredible achievement for SCCC. Not only will we be able to provide job training in health care to Temporary Assistance to Needy Families recipients and low-income students, but through this funding the College is embracing a new program to meet an emerging workforce need in the health care industry, as well as to stimulate economic development in the Capital Region.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about all that’s happening at SCCC. As you read through this year’s Annual Report, you will see how busy and productive the 2009-10 academic year was. We look forward to your continued support of our events, programs and mission.

President unveils Strategic Plan Dr. Quintin Bullock, President of SCCC, unveiled the College’s new Strategic Plan in August 2010. The new student-centered plan, effective September 1, 2010, with the theme Gateway to Excellence, provides a framework for the College to move ahead with a clear set of objectives in support of the SCCC Mission and Vision statements. In December 2009, regional business and economic development leaders were invited to participate in a Strategic Planning Summit at the College. They shared their insight, providing crucial information in the areas of curriculum and workforce development. The College’s Strategic Planning Council then identified 17 core values and 41 key objectives, addressing four major College goals: (1) strengthen excellence in teaching and learning, (2) enrich the student experience, (3) enhance the campus physical environment, and (4) respond positively and responsibly to fiscal challenges. These goals support the College’s interests including fostering effective and efficient communication, strengthening the use of technology, attracting students to SCCC and developing the campus to serve as an anchor in Schenectady County and the Capital Region. A draft Strategic Plan was reviewed with the College community during eight comprehensive focus group sessions in Spring 2010, and session feedback was incorporated into the Plan. The Strategic Plan was then approved by Dr. Bullock and endorsed by the SCCC Board of Trustees.

SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher honored Emily Miller, a Tourism and Hospitality Management major from Glenville, and Sarah-Jane Fawcett, a Music Certificate major from Niskayuna, as recipients of the 2010 Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence. The Chancellor’s Awards recognize students who have best demonstrated academic excellence and leadership.

wins in a season. The Baseball Team once again won 20 or more games in the regular season-finishing 21-19 overall, 18-10 in regional play.

Athletes named All-Region

Athletes excel on and off the field The Women’s Crew Team (l. to r.) Sarah Wells, Maggie Fitzmaurice, Sarah Couvillon, Marse Pulley and Christiana Johnson had another successful season with wins over four-year colleges including the University at Albany and RPI. They finished the season at the prestigious New York State Championships where they finished fifth in the women’s varsity 4+ final. The SCCC Men’s Baseball and Basketball Teams both qualified for the Region III playoffs. Both teams had 10-game winning streaks during the regular season (a record for the Men’s Basketball Team). The Basketball Team finished with a 17-9 regular season, which ties the College record for most

Six student-athletes were named Academic All-Region in June 2010. They were selected based on completion of 45 credit hours and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50. All of the SCCC students recognized exceeded the GPA standard. They were Sam Miller ’10, Computer Information Systems, pitcher on the SCCC Men’s Baseball Team; Mike Skroupa ’10, Science, infielder on the Men’s Baseball Team; Damian Tyler ’10, Criminal Justice, outfielder on the Men’s Baseball Team; John Pitucci, Business Administration, member of the Men’s Bowling Team; Christiana Johnson ’10, Teacher Education Transfer, guard on the Women’s Basketball Team and coxswain on the Women’s Crew Team, and Maggie Fitzmaurice ’10, Humanities and Social Sciences, member of the Women’s Crew Team.

Alex Novicki, Nanoscale Materials Technology major and Treasurer of the SCCC Technology Club, introduces panelists during TECH TALK 2010 in April 2010.

Tech Talk 2010 among career events The Career and Employment Services Office offered events to link more than 1,200 students with employers. TECH TALK 2010 brought big name companies to campus including GLOBALFOUNDRIES, IBM, GE Healthcare, SuperPower and New Horizons Computer Learning Center. Students also participated in speed interviewing sessions, career fairs and workforce panels.

University in the High School remains popular The University in the High School (UHS) program saw an increase of 11 percent in the last academic year, as more and more students were able to gain college credit for SCCC courses taken in their own high schools. UHS is the College’s concurrent enrollment program, and students earn the credits by taking the courses as part of their normal high school schedule, taught by SCCC-approved high school instructors. This “jump start” on college credits can save significant amounts of time and money for students. The students also report being more ready for college courses once they enter their postsecondary careers.

Last year the College processed more than 1,900 UHS registrations. About 130 courses were offered at 18 institutions. SCCC takes a leadership role in concurrent education in that the coordinator of the program serves as the elected secretary of the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships, which accredits concurrent enrollment programs.

High school juniors utilize compound microscopes during a Microbiology workshop at the College.

College partners with high schools

Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics (MRSA), pathogens, foodborne and waterborne diseases may not be on the typical class schedule for most high school juniors. But for a group of teenagers from schools in the Capital Region who visited the College in April 2010, those were the subjects they discussed with Associate Professor Renato Tameta during his Microbiology classes.

New academic programs

College welcomes trustee

During Summer 2010, SCCC announced the debut of four new academic programs and the revamping of another for Fall 2010.

Tina Chericoni Versaci was appointed to the Board of Trustees in February 2010 by the Schenectady County Legislature and was reappointed by the Legislature in July 2010. She has been a member of the Education Committee and is a Trustees representative on the SCCC Foundation Board of Directors.

The Air Traffic Control A.A.S. degree program, a partnership with the Schenectady County Airport, will provide students with a foundation in air traffic control basics and skills for the continuous safe flow of aircraft in the airspace system. SCCC is one of only three colleges in the country to offer “live” tower training. Graduates of the Alternative Energy Technology A.A.S. degree program will be prepared for employment as qualified technicians in the emerging energy fields of solar and wind energy technology or battery and fuel cell energy technology. The revamped/renamed Computer Networking Systems and Cyber Security A.A.S. degree program addresses increased concerns about network and computer security and provides both a theoretical and hands-on foundation in these areas using industry-standard hardware and software, including computer forensics. The Criminal Justice A.S. degree program will prepare students for transfer into related programs at a four-year college or university. The Storage Battery Technology Certificate program was developed in collaboration with GE to produce qualified technicians for GE’s new sodium storage battery plant in Schenectady. “These programs are examples of collaborations between faculty and professionals in the field that result in quality academic programs,” said Dr. Penny A. Haynes, Vice President of Academic Affairs.

14

Versaci was a partner at O’Connell and Aronowitz P.C. from 2004 to January 2010, where she worked independently and as a supervising partner on complex litigation matters, managing litigation matters in State and Federal Court. Prior to becoming a partner, she was an Associate Attorney with the firm for eight years. She recently left to spend more time at home with her children. Versaci earned her Juris Doctor from Albany Law School and her B.A. degree in Political Science from Providence College. She is Secretary of the Capital District Trial Lawyers Association, a Board Member for Catholic Charities of Schenectady County, and a Member of the Albany County Bar Association. She resides in Schenectady with her husband, Schenectady County Surrogate’s Court Judge Vincent Versaci and their three young children, Caroline, Rosemarie and Michael.

Online courses During 2009-2010, the College offered 134 online sections and 14 hybrid sections where the class is a combination of online and face-to-face instruction. Over 3,400 enrolled in online classes during 2009-2010, an increase of 20 percent (566 students) over 2008-2009. Over the past two years the number of students taking online courses has increased by 41 percent.

SCCC Foundation Dear Friends: The momentum generated in 2009 with the arrival of our new President, Dr. Quintin Bullock, the national spotlight on the importance of community colleges, the development of a new strategic plan and the creation of outstanding new academic programs helped SCCC thrive in 2010. Much of SCCC’s success in the past year was due to the generous support of our many donors. On behalf of the entire Foundation Board, I wish to express our gratitude to all of our donors: those that continually support the College, as well as our many new donors. The Foundation continued to strengthen its resources through tremendously successful celebrations like the 40th Anniversary Gala and Food For Thought and All That Jazz. Funds generated by these very special events, as well as generous contributions to our Annual Fund, provide crucial support to students through scholarships and grants, as well as essential professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

SCCC contributes greatly to our community’s quality of life by providing affordable education to students throughout the Capital Region. And as more and more of our graduates enter the local work force, their contributions to the economic vitality of the region cannot be underestimated. As I move into the role of Immediate Past Chair, I’d like to thank my colleagues on the Foundation Board for their dedication to providing SCCC students with greater academic opportunities. Looking forward, I’m confident that SCCC’s collaborations with various stakeholders throughout SUNY, Schenectady County, and in fact, the entire Capital Region will continue to generate positive synergy and growth. As SCCC’s enrollment continues to increase, and our excellent academic programs continue to meet the changing workforce needs of Tech Valley, our work becomes an even more important element in the economic success of our community and state. Thank you again for all you do to strengthen our College.

New scholarships help veterans and technology students Three new scholarship programs will provide an extra boost to SCCC students. The Fred and Catherine Kindl Alternative Energy Scholarships and the Fred and Catherine Kindl Nanoscale Materials Technology Scholarships will provide recipients entering these high technology programs with up to $1,500 per semester for four semesters. The Tri-County Council of Vietnam Era Veterans and Gold Star Mothers Scholarship is the result of a gift of $15,000 to endow a scholarship to assist a full- or part-time veteran or child of a Veteran. The SCCC Foundation is grateful to these donors for their generous donations.

Larissa Diaz, a Music major, was awarded the Broughton Fellowship at the College’s 39th Honors Convocation in May 2010. She will receive full tuition, fees and an allowance for books for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. The Broughton Fellowship, the largest scholarship given at SCCC, is presented to a full-time matriculated student, who has a 3.2 GPA or higher and an expected graduation date of May 2011. He/she must also exhibit strong moral character and a commitment to excellence. Larissa is the President of the Black and Latino Student Alliance (BLSA) and helped organize the BLSA’s “Step Up For Haiti” charity event. She was the Assistant House Manager for the SCCC Player’s award-winning production of In Conflict in Fall 2010 and appeared in their production of The Dining Room in Spring 2010. Larissa has also organized fundraising events for Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Services and the Schenectady City Mission. She balances a job and a full-time course load at the College, all while maintaining a 3.73 GPA. Larissa plans to graduate from SCCC in May 2011 and attend a four-year college or university to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Theater or Arts Administration.
