t SUNY Orange, you will be introduced to a vibrant array of campus happenings and organizations, giving you ample opportunity to find your inspiration both inside and outside of the classroom. Many of the College’s student organizations are clubs formed within academic disciplines, allowing students within those programs to develop out-of-the-classroom experiences that augment their lecture-based learning. Aside from academic groups you will have the chance to immerse yourself in clubs, service organizations, athletics and intramurals. And if you can’t find a club you want, you are free to form one with fellow students who share your same interests.

Honors Program The Honors Program offers highly motivated and talented students an opportunity to develop their academic potential more fully. Honors courses are selected from the areas of: English, social science, arts, communication, humanities, math, biology, movement science and business. Honors sections of these courses offer enrichment through alternative texts, outside readings, research projects and abstract concept development beyond the traditional course section. Additionally, students complete three Honors seminars, perform required community service and publicly present a capstone research project. The Honors Program is open to both full- and part-time degree-seeking students.
SUNY Orange has been ranked among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and technical schools for its commitment to active and retired military personnel, earning the College a “Military Friendly Schools” certification from Victory Media Inc., publisher of the magazine “G.I. Jobs.” SUNY Orange offers many services to assist veterans, including specialized academic advising, study skills workshops and transfer counseling. A designated academic advisor trained at the Center for Deployment Psychology assists student veterans, and an active Veteran’s Club plays an important role in welcoming new veterans to the College and supporting them in their transition to student life. 2
This past spring, seven SUNY Orange Honors Program students represented the College at the prestigious Northeast Regional Honors Council Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. It marked the first time any SUNY Orange students had been selected to make presentations at the annual conference. Following a standout baseball career at Valley Central High School, Matt Lennon graduated in 2010 and enrolled at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. Lennon stayed at the Pennsylvania school for just one semester because he struggled making the adjustment to college work, was uncomfortable being away from home and was unhappy with his role in the baseball program. Lennon returned home to Orange County and enrolled at SUNY Orange for the Spring 2011 semester. His transition to SUNY Orange was not smooth, either, and he suffered through some tough academic times, but he has since gotten himself settled in the classroom and has begun contributing to the Colts’ fortunes on the baseball diamond. “It took me a little bit of time, but I was finally able to transition to college. I now know what the workload expectations are and how I should manage my time to be successful in class. I have also been able to save my family some money and work while I’ve attended SUNY Orange. I intend to transfer back to a four-year institution and I believe I am now ready to be away from home and able to succeed academically. It is a great feeling. Coming to SUNY Orange was a good choice for me. I would say that if you are worried about going away to college, you should think about SUNY Orange. It is a place where you can learn about yourself and what it takes to be successful when you get to whatever four-year school you choose.”

very journey begins with a first step. At SUNY Orange, we realize that your pursuit of your goals and ambitions will indeed be a journey. As you map your future, you need to assess the best method for reaching your destination. A SUNY Orange degree will serve you well in many ways. Would you like to bypass entry-level positions? An Associate in Applied Science degree will provide you with the in-depth training employers in many technical fields crave. Or, do you wish to acquire your bachelor’s degree? You can attend SUNY Orange feeling confident that all, or most, of your credits will transfer to a four-year college or university, meaning you will remain on track to complete your studies in four years. The list at right indicates a sampling of the four-year colleges and universities to which SUNY Orange students have transferred. As a SUNY Orange graduate, you will be guaranteed the opportunity to continue full-time study at a four-year SUNY college thanks to the SUNY Transfer Guarantee. However, the transfer guarantee program does not ensure admission to a specific college or curriculum. SUNY Orange has also established transfer agreements with many other colleges and universities to facilitate smooth transitions for our students because we are committed to insuring that your “next step” after SUNY Orange is the right one as well.

The College’s Office of Career and Internship Services coordinates a Career Advisory Network (C.A.N.) that allows SUNY Orange alumni from various professions to mentor current students and help students better understand career options and choices. Students can visit alumni “on the job” to experience “first-hand” the requirements of that particular profession.

In today’s competitive employment climate, employers are anxious to fill open positions with experienced and qualified candidates. In addition to a strong academic record, you can also set yourself apart by taking part in one or more internships. By interning with an organization or company in your field of study, you’ll have an opportunity to work with professionals, apply classroom knowledge to workplace situations, and learn about the demands and rewards of work in your particular profession. SUNY Orange encourages you to approach internships as an opportunity to observe professionals at work and to further develop your skills. Internships can be highly beneficial but don’t usually result in your first career position. However, that was not the case recently with 2013 graduate Casey Delia. Delia, who earned a Medical Office Assistant degree, was an intern with the Goshen law firm Murphy and Lambiase, where she scheduled appointments, answered phones, arranged depositions, prepared motions and filed documents. After completing the minimum 90-hour internship requirement, Delia’s supervisor was so pleased with her performance and skills that she was offered a permanent position and a raise. Soon afterward, the firm expanded her duties to include legal research and learning the QuickBooks software package. While Delia had not considered working for a law firm prior to her internship, she now encourages other students to “keep your options open. Sometimes things that you don’t think you might be interested in could end up being a career for you. “I honestly cannot thank (the College) enough for this opportunity. This has been a life-changing experience and opened my eyes to so much.” Internships are just one element of the services provided by SUNY Orange’s Career and Internship Services office. The staff also provides career advising and counseling, job market information, professional development workshops and seminars, and a listing of available local full- and part-time jobs.

Your academic success comes when you are immersed in an environment that allows for academic exploration and presents you with the tools to foster that exploration. If you can quickly and easily travel back and forth from classes, leaving more time for studying or collaborating with classmates, you are likely to be even more successful. SUNY Orange continues to grow in response to the needs of its students, offering campuses in both Middletown and Newburgh to help you achieve your academic goals. Each campus holds its own unique charm. If you live on the eastern side of Orange County, you will be awestruck when you walk through the doors of Kaplan Hall, a state-of-the-art classroom building that recently opened in Newburgh. The building features the latest amenities in its labs, classrooms and study spaces, as well as a safe and secure underground parking garage that provides easy access to the campus. SUNY Orange is now offering seven full degree programs in Newburgh, meaning you can complete all of your degree requirements there without traveling to Middletown. However, if you choose to utilize the Middletown campus, you will stroll a bucolic campus with a beauty the belies its city address. The 37-acre campus is located on the beautiful and picturesque grounds of a historic estate, with 14 buildings standing ready to welcome you. With its picturesque beauty, cozy confines and contemporary functionality, the SUNY Orange Middletown campus has become a comfortable and safe second home to students who seek academic challenge, friendship and lively activity.
When construction of the Center for Science and Engineering is completed during the summer of 2014, it will cap an aggressive series of capital improvement projects that will have seen the College pour $140 million into buildings and grounds within a six-year span. In all, the College will have fully constructed or renovated six structures, resulting in more than 285,000 square feet of new or renewed educational space on both campuses.
Newburgh Campus Kaplan Hall Opened in January 2011, this building boasts 87,000 square feet of space that is bursting with a bevy of technological amenities. Kaplan Hall includes classrooms, laboratories, nursing wing, one-stop student services suite, library, art gallery, tutoring center, faculty offices and an underground parking garage. The building also features a “Great Room” that overlooks the scenic Hudson River and serves as a multi-purpose meeting and activity space for students, faculty, staff and the community. Tower Building The College’s physical transformation of the Newburgh campus became complete when the renovated Tower Building opened in January 2012, combining with Kaplan Hall to effectively double SUNY Orange’s ability to serve students in Newburgh. The Tower Building includes classrooms, a student art gallery, fitness room, lab school (childcare facility), faculty and administrative offices, cafeteria, criminal justice lab and student activity spaces.
Middletown Campus Devitt Center for Botany and Horticulture The Devitt Center, located next to Horton Hall, is a refurbished greenhouse, one of two greenhouse structures that remained from the original Morrison estate that was donated to establish the College in 1950. It now features a new classroom and laboratory space. The adjacent second greenhouse was restored to working condition this Fall. Morrison Lab School The Morrison Lab School is a magnificent new childcare facility that also serves as an on-campus learning laboratory for students in the College’s education and early childhood development programs. It opened in August 2012 and offers licensed daycare, certified by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, for children ranging in age from infants (2 months) through pre-school (age 5).

Parking Garage Built at the intersection of Wawayanda and East Conkling avenues, the Middletown Campus Parking Garage added more than 300 additional spaces to the parking-starved campus when it opened in January 2013. The garage serves the adjacent Physical Education Building as well as Harriman Hall, but is a short walk from all corners of campus.
SUNY Orange operates a free shuttle bus service between its Middletown and Newburgh campuses, with alternating trips leaving from one of the campuses at the top of each hour.

SUNY Orange boasts many strengths, from its superb faculty to its diverse curriculum to its outstanding student support services. But, one of the College’s strongest attributes is its minimal impact on your financial “bottom line.” SUNY Orange offers a quality education at an affordable price. When you crunch the numbers, you will see exactly how strong we are. As you research college costs, you will notice that spending two years at SUNY Orange prior to transferring to a private four-year college or university will slice more than $60,000 off your four-year tuition bill (based on 2012-13 figures from The College Board). Keep in mind that the College also offers generous financial aid packages that include federal aid, state aid, scholarships, work study and grants, as well as a tuition payment plan.
The support that the College receives from many sources, including Orange County, helps SUNY Orange to keep tuition low, allowing you to secure the education you need at a price that fits your budget. Annually, SUNY Orange students receive more than $6 million in funds. A portion of these funds comes from state and federal government programs such as the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Federal Pell Grant Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program, and Vietnam and Persian Gulf Veterans Tuition Assistance programs. The College’s financial aid staff is fully prepared to help you discover the many available methods for further defraying the cost of your education. The College offers an array of academic and athletic scholarships, and is committed to increasing its scholarship endowment fund significantly so that a far greater number of SUNY Orange students may receive aid in the future.
When Molly McNeely began her college career at SUNY Orange, she was admittedly a “distracted” student with no real focus or goals. But, following a two-year hiatus from academics, she returned to SUNY Orange with a fresh perspective and an energized approach. She became a Dean’s List student earning virtually straight A’s, got involved in campus activities, joined the Honors Program and became a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for students at two-year colleges and universities. McNeely founded, and served as president of, the student English Club, organized voter registration drives at the College and volunteered at a variety of cultural and social events for students and the community. In Fall 2012, she volunteered for Sean Patrick Maloney’s successful United States Congressional election campaign and during the winter break she was an intern for President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Committee. In the spring she received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and also delivered a presentation on discrimination at the prestigious Northeast Regional Honors Council Conference. And, this past summer she was one of 25 women selected to participate in the NEW Leadership New York Summer Institute, a weeklong undergraduate leadership development program administered by the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society at the University at Albany. “SUNY Orange is unique in that it afforded me the opportunity to start over. Returning students can face difficulties but at SUNY Orange I was allowed to remake my academic journey into something I am proud of. I was not burdened with the debt of my past mistakes, and could instead focus on my present achievements. I became involved in clubs and community service projects, and was able to meet other passionate students who shared in my excitement for academics and helping the outside world. I was encouraged to take risks, and apply to things slightly beyond my reach. And with the support of the Honors Program, I was able to achieve things greater than I ever believed possible.”

*Medical Laboratory Technology (A.A.S.) Accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program prepares students to sit for the Medical Laboratory Technician certification examination of the American Society for Clinical Pathologists, and the clinical laboratory technicians examination by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc. Career opportunities include working as medical laboratory technicians in hospital laboratories, medical research centers and veterinary laboratories. Students completing the program are also employed by the chemical, cosmetic and food industries as laboratory technicians.
Program provides for the development of those competencies expected of registered nurses in general nursing practice at the technical level. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Professional Nurse (RN). Career opportunities include positions in hospitals, clinics, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, home care, physicians’ offices and schools.
*Occupational Therapy Assistant (A.A.S.) Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education Program qualifies students for state and national certification as an occupational therapy assistant. Occupational Therapy (OT) provides service to those individuals whose abilities to cope with their occupations (tasks) of living are threatened or impaired by developmental deficits, the aging process, physical injury or illness, or psychological and social disability. Career opportunities include positions in hospitals, rehab centers, schools, private practices, mental health agencies, nursing homes and home care.
*Physical Therapist Assistant (A.A.S.) Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education Program prepares students to sit for the national licensure examination leading to a position as a Physical Therapist Assistant. PTA’s work under the direction of a PT to
provide services that relieve pain and improve mobility for patients who are recovering from physical injuries, diseases or disabilities. Career opportunities include working in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, private offices, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, schools, fitness centers and home care.
*Radiologic Technology (A.A.S.) Accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology Program prepares students to apply for New York State licensure and the examination of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists for Certification as a Registered Technologist. Radiography is the art and science of using radiation to provide images of the tissues, organs, bones and blood vessels of the human body. Career opportunities include positions in hospitals, private offices and free-standing imaging centers.

Criminal Justice—Police (A.A.S.)
Program prepares graduates to transfer and complete a bachelor’s degree in human services, psychology or sociology. It also prepares the graduate for employment as a direct care worker.
Program is designed for students who are interested in a career in law enforcement or industrial security. Students who complete this program will be certified to seek employment as security officers with local or state security agencies.
Program has been developed for those who are currently employed or expect to seek employment in law enforcement agencies.
Early Childhood Development and Care (A.A.S.)
Human Services (A.S.)
Teaching Assistant (Cert.) Program is designed to assist students in developing professional career skills in preparation for New York Teacher Assistant Licensure and Certification examination.
Program prepares students for responsible and effective employment in positions ranging from aide to head teacher in a variety of early childhood settings. It provides theory, practical information and extensive supervised experience concerning normal early human development, developmental difficulties, caring for and educating young children, methods for fostering child development, and the operation and management of early childhood facilities.
LAB SCHOOL PROGRAMS With new state-of-the-art Lab Schools available in Middletown and Newburgh, SUNY Orange is able to offer affordable and accessible childcare to students, faculty, staff and community members on both campuses. The licensed Lab School programs, certified by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, are available for children ranging in age from infants (2 months) through pre-school (age 5). Childcare is available on a priority basis for children of students, faculty and staff of the College. As space permits, community members may also enroll their children. Tuition subsidies for children of SUNY Orange students may also be available. In addition, the two Lab Schools offer students in the College’s education and early childhood development degree programs opportunities to augment their classroom lectures by visiting the schools to observe the children and learn first-hand about current childcare techniques. Liberal Arts and Sciences Programs Associate in Arts Degree (General) (A.A.) Designed to provide students with the opportunity to transfer to four-year programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. Areas of academic interest include: art, communication/media, foundations for criminal justice, foundations for education/ humanities-social science (not JRTEP), English, history, humanities, music, political science, pre-law, psychology, social science, sociology and theater arts.
Associate in Science Degree (General) (A.S.) Designed to provide students with the opportunity to transfer to four-year programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Areas of academic interest include astronomy, biological science, chemistry, geology, foundations of education/math-science (not JRTEP), individual studies, mathematics, outdoor leadership, physical education, physical science, physics, pre-chiropractic, predental, pre-environmental and pre-forestry, pre-medical, pre-pharmacology and preveterinary. A minimum of 30 credits of math and science combined is required for this degree. At least 6 credits of math must be College Algebra (MAT 121) or higher, at least 3 credits of which must be a SUNY Math and at least 6 credits of science must be from the SUNY Natural Science list.
Engineering Science (A.S.) Designed specifically for those students who wish to transfer to four-year engineering programs.The basic courses in calculus and engineering physics constitute the nucleus of this program for students who plan to specialize in mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, environmental, computer, geological, architectural, materials or aeronautical engineering. *Programs with an asterisk are selective admissions programs. Students must meet certain admission criteria prior to acceptance into the program. 10

Performing Arts: Music (A.A.S.)
Transfer degree program designed for those students whose goals are not adequately addressed by one of the College’s other programs. Its purpose is to allow students to shape a program to meet their individual needs. An Individual Study Plan with a 250 word statement of your educational, transfer and career objectives will be required prior to your sophomore year at SUNY Orange.
The program prepares students to enter the employment world in a field connected with music or for possible transfer to a baccalaureate music program. Emphasis Areas: music, music business, jazz/commercial
International Studies (A.A.) Designed to prepare students for transfer and continued academic success within a liberal arts setting, especially one dedicated to the study of international and global events.
Jointly Registered Teacher Education Program (JRTEP) (A.A. & A.S.) Programs are a jointly registered liberal arts/ teacher education program with SUNY Orange and SUNY New Paltz, approved by the New York State Education Department, for the benefit of students who plan to teach at the birth through Grade 12 levels. Students must choose to concentrate in the first to sixth grade (1-6) or seventh to 12th grade (7-12) levels. Upon successful completion of the A.A. or A.S. degree at SUNY Orange, students may transfer to SUNY New Paltz with full junior standing in order to complete the bachelor’s degree. Admission to New Paltz is guaranteed, upon successful completion of the New Paltz application process.
Students in this program take a common core of 54 credits and select one of three degree emphasis areas: music performance (total of 67 credits), jazz and commercial music (total of 70 credits) or music business (total of 71 credits).
Tech-savvy professors at SUNY Orange are incorporating iPads into their course curriculum. Instructors from a variety of disciplines—including biology, nursing, English, arts and communication, dental hygiene, physical therapist assistant and global studies—report that iPad usage has improved communications with students. Faculty members have also been able to augment their presentations by using the iPad to create videos that support lectures, and can also access applications or other online tools to bring additional material to the classroom in real time.
Technologies Programs Architectural Technology (A.A.S.) Program prepares students for employment in a variety of entry-level careers in architectural, engineering and construction firms. The primary emphasis is on preparation of students for CAD operator positions within such firms.
Computer Information Technology (CIT)— Networking (A.A.S.) Program prepares students for employment in a variety of entry-level careers in computer networking and information technology occupations. The theory and practical experience students gain allows them to enter jobs with highly competitive salaries.
Visual Communications Technology: Graphic Arts/Printing (A.A.S.) Program includes all aspects of visual communications and graphic design concepts, layout, mechanicals and production, typography, commercial print processes, illustration, and computer graphics. Career opportunities include entry level positions in graphic design, printing, publishing,
desktop publishing, advertising, marketing, presentation graphics, multimedia and communication, as well as for transfer to baccalaureate visual communications and graphic design programs. Students must complete a two-course sequence in painting, figure drawing, photography or digital photography for degree.
Computer Science (A.S.) Designed for students of mathematics and science who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science at four-year colleges and universities.
Cyber Security (A.A.S.) Program prepares students for employment in a variety of entry-level careers in cyber security. People with knowledge in this area are in high demand. Positions can include such titles as network administrator, network security specialist and information security technician, just to name a few.
Green Building Maintenance and Management (A.A.S.) This program, offered in conjunction with the Hudson Valley Educational Consortium, provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to maintain and manage high-performance commercial buildings.
Hudson Valley Educational Consortium The Hudson Valley Educational Consortium is a collaborative effort among SUNY Orange, Ulster, Rockland and Sullivan County Community Colleges to create broader access to academic programs and workforce training throughout the four-county region. The degree programs offered through the consortium are: cyber security, fire protection technology, emergency management, and green building maintenance and management.

Admission to SUNY Orange
dmission to the College is open to all graduates of accredited high schools, students who have earned the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and home schooled students who follow New York State Department of Education regulations. To be considered for admission, applicants must complete the checklist at right. A student may choose to pursue a degree on a full-time (12 credits or more per semester) or part-time (less than 12 credits per semester) basis. For financial aid and/or scholarship consideration, students must be accepted and enrolled in one of the College’s degree programs.

The SUNY Orange Admissions Office staff is available throughout the year to assist you with your college decision-making process. Whether you are a high school student, an adult considering your college options or a transfer student with college credit already completed, the Admissions Office can help get you started. Admissions information sessions and campus tours take place several times each week at both the Middletown and Newburgh campuses. In addition, the staff organizes College-wide Open House events and program-specific information sessions throughout the year. We also maintain an active off-campus recruiting schedule at high schools and public venues throughout the county, and sponsor activities on campus and online to introduce prospective students to the academic and extracurricular opportunities available at SUNY Orange. APPLYING TO SUNY ORANGE
The College offers several methods for applying for admission. You may submit the application online, download it from the College web site (www.sunyorange.edu/admissions/apply) or pick up an application in person from the Office of Admissions.
APPLICATION DEADLINES Completed applications are reviewed and decisions are made on a rolling basis throughout the year. Early applications are encouraged. Applicants will be admitted for the Fall and Spring semesters until two weeks prior to each upcoming session. For information on Summer admission, contact the Office of Admissions. The College does have program-specific admissions criteria and deadlines for selected programs, including the health professions degree programs and the Honors Program. Additionally, international applicants or applicants with foreign credentials must fulfill certain requirements to gain admission to SUNY Orange. Understanding the SUNY Orange Degrees The Associate in Science (A.S.) and Associate in Art (A.A.) degrees prepare students for transfer to baccalaureate programs. The Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree programs provide two years of college-level studies with an emphasis on developing technical and professional competence for entry in a specific career. 12

Request official transcripts.
Students are required to submit an official high school or official GED Score Report as well as official transcripts of every college they have attended. Students who are currently enrolled in high school or college coursework will be required to submit final official transcripts (including proof of high school graduation) prior to the start of the semester.
Take the College Placement Test.
All students who plan to enroll as degree-seeking students are required to take the placement test. This test gauges collegelevel skills in reading, writing and mathematics, and assists the College in placing students in courses at the appropriate level. There is a $25 fee which must be paid prior to taking the test. Students may submit a waiver form if they have successfully completed college-level English and/or Math courses prior to registering.
Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships.
Students wishing to apply for financial aid, including grants, scholarships or loans, must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. New York State residents are also eligible to apply for the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). FAFSA and TAP Applications become available in January of each year. To be considered for a scholarship, you must apply by March 1 prior to the Fall semester in which you plan to enroll.
Send in Immunization Records.
New York State Public Health laws require all students taking 6 or more credits to sign the Meningitis Information Response Form and all students taking 6 or more credits who were born on or after January 1, 1957, to provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella in order to register for classes. You may have your records faxed to (845) 341-4872.
