NATIONAL SOCCER COACHES ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA CODE OF ETHICS PREAMBLE Soccer belongs to the players. It provides many physical values, emotional satisfaction, and even a spiritual uplifting to those that play. Coaches who choose soccer as their profession must understand these ideas and put the welfare of the game and its players above their own gain. Any profession, regardless of how noble it is deemed, is only as good as its members and the conduct they exhibit. Soccer coaches must be asked to maintain the trust and confidence placed in them by their players and by the public. Coaches that are unwilling to comply with the principles of their national organization’s Code of Ethics, have no place in the profession. PURPOSE The Code of Ethics has been developed to clarify and distinguish ethical and approved professional behavior from those practices that are detrimental. The Code’s secondary purpose is to promote soccer by stressing the proper functions expected of coaches in their dealing with schools, players, and the public. There can be no success of this Code of Ethics without the consent and support of those for who it was established - the soccer coaches. ARTICLE ONE - RESPONSIBILITIES TO PLAYERS The coach must never place the value of winning over the safety and welfare of his players. Winning should be the result of preparation and discipline with considerable emphasis placed on the highest societal ideals and character traits. The Laws of Soccer were written to insure a continuous flow of action. These laws have the safety of the players as their primary goal. Coaches must always play within these rules and never seek unfair advantage by teaching deliberate unsportsmanlike behavior to their players. Coaches have the responsibility not to tolerate these types of behavior from their players regardless of the situations. Winning without boasting and losing without bitterness are lessons players can and should learn from the coach. Medical problems should not be the responsibility of coaches. The diagnosis and treatment of injuries should be handled by the appropriate person with directing their players to seek competent medical attention and to follow physician’s orders thoroughly and promptly. Under no circumstance should a coach authorize the use of drugs. Medicants, stimulants, or drugs should be used only when authorized and supervised by a physician. Circumvention of eligibility rules must be avoided. Demands on players should pertain only to achieving success on the field and never be so extensive as to interfere with their academic progress.

4

ARTICLE TWO - RESPONSIBLITIES TO THE INSTITUTION The function of the coach is to contribute to the education of the student through participation in soccer. This must never be disregarded. The coach must behave in such a manner that the principles, integrity, and dignity of the institution are not compromised. Coaches must not ask faculty members for special considerations for their players. Coaches must not seek special considerations from the admissions office. Coaches should discuss problems with their athletic director and/or faculty representative in a friendly manner and then accept and support their decision. Official student records and transcripts should never been passed through the coach’s office. Coaches must support administrative decisions in all policies, rules, and regulations regarding soccer. The coach’s superior or supervisor should be notified immediately of a possible position transfer. ARTICLE THREE - RULES OF THE GAME Coaches must be acquainted thoroughly with the rules of soccer. They are responsible for seeing that their players understand the intent as well as the application of the rules of the game. Coaches must adhere to the letter and spirit of the rules. Coaches who circumvent the rules to gain an advantage have no place in college or scholastic soccer. Coaches are responsible for their players’ action on the field. Roughhouse tactics, illegal substitutions and deliberate faking of injuries are prohibited. Coaches must not permit their players to perform with the intent of causing injury to opposing players. If coaches permit, encourage or condone performance that is not in the letter or spirit of the laws, they become derelict in their responsibilities to their players, their school, and the sport. They must constantly strive to teach good sportsmanship; nothing less is acceptable.

5

ARTICLE FOUR - OFFICIALS Soccer becomes chaos without impartial, competent officials. Officials must have the support of coaches, players and institutions. Public or private criticism of officials by coaches demeans the game. Coaches must also refrain from criticizing officials to their players. The National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association is a highly professional organization that has the welfare of soccer as its primary concern. Coaches and institutions should support their local as well as national organizations. Coaches should strive to attend officials’ rules meetings. Coaches should also invite officials to discuss rule interpretations with their teams. It is very beneficial for coach and referee if the latter is invited to officiate scrimmages. On game day, officials should be treated with respect. This includes providing a private room, away from opposing teams, to meet and dress for the game. The NCAA Soccer Guide is to be followed to the letter. Criticism of an official should be made in writing to the appropriate organization assigning the official. Coaches must not address the referee before, during, or after a game in a demeaning fashion. They should demand the same from all members of their team and official school party. A coach must not incite players or spectators against the referees or the flow of the game. This violation is considered unworthy of any member of the coach profession. The use of slow motion or video replay equipment to check a controversial decision made by an official is discouraged. On the spot decisions required by the officials are considerably more difficult than criticism by the use of replay equipment. To show critical calls to sports writers, sports announcers, team members, alumni and the public with the sole desire of labeling an official incompetent must be considered unethical conduct. ARTICLE FIVE - PUBLIC RELATIONS The soccer coach has a unique responsibility with the news media. In many cases soccer needs to be explained and public relations become a job for all coaches. The coach must be careful not to make derogatory or misleading statements towards officials, opposing coach and team spectators, and another institution. If good judgment indicates an honest answer would be prejudicial or inflammatory and not be in the best interest of soccer, ethical procedure demands that it not be answered. In such instances, “No comment” is justified. Coaches have a responsibility to assist their players in conducting themselves properly when being interviewed by members of the news media The media should be admitted to the dressing rooms as soon as possible after the games. It serves no purpose for coaches to stress injuries, disciplinary measures, academic difficulties, eligibility and other personal matters when referring to a player’s poor performance or a team’s loss or losing way. Coaches should avoid public references to unethical recruiting and possible rule violation of their peers.

6

Statements that do not show soccer as being a part of the educational process must be regarded as detrimental to the game. Predicting publicly a win is a folly and serves no useful place in coach’s public image. It shall be unethical for a coach to use alumni, booster, and soccer organizations to pressure institutional athletic controls or to encourage violation of established rules. The coach must not attempt to force these organizations into financial or other dealing not in the framework of their rules or guidelines. The endorsement of a product or commodity that is not in keeping with the tradition of the coaching profession is unethical. The coach must be sure that any testimonial does not bring him discredit. The endorsement, directly or indirectly, by an active member of the Association, of alcoholic beverages and/or tobacco products is unethical. Coaches must not be associated in any way with professional gamblers and should not be present where gambling on team sports is encouraged or permitted. ARTICLE SIX - SCOUTING It is unethical under any circumstances to scout any team, by any means whatsoever, except in regularly scheduled game. The use of videotape or motion picture equipment to scout opponent’s regularly scheduled games is prohibited. ARTICLE SEVEN - RECRUITING All institutional, conference, and national regulatory body rules pertaining to recruiting shall be observed strictly. It is unethical to recruit a player enrolled in another four-year institution. A student athlete should be recruited during his participatory time in a sport, so that he misses or is late for practice and games. When discussing the advantage of his institution, the coach has an obligation to be truthful and forthright. He must refrain from making derogatory statements about another coach or institution. It is unethical for a coach to make any statement to any prospective athlete that cannot be fulfilled.

7

ARTICLE EIGHT - GAME DAY AND OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES A coach’s behavior must be such as to bring credit to himself, his institution and soccer. Rival coaches should meet prior to the game and exchange friendly greetings. Soccer coaches have the responsibility to be as inconspicuous as possible during the game. Coaches are encouraged to exhibit a friendly and kindly attitude towards their players. The attitude of coaches towards officials should be controlled and undemonstrative. It shall be considered unethical for a coach to have any verbal dissent during the game with an opposing coach or bench. Physically contacting an opposing player must be considered behavior detrimental to the game and highly unethical. The post game dressing room doors should be kept closed until the coach has had time to complete his responsibilities, especially the careful checking of his players for injuries. Coaches need to use their influence on friendly crowds that demonstrate intimidating behavior that might lead to a player injury. A coach shall not receive a salary from any professional team for talent scouting or negotiating for players.

Taken from the program of the first-ever SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Tournament in Albany on October 29, 1983:

Today’s Game: Today’s first-ever SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Tournament brings together teams representing the East and West Divisions of the conference. Albany, with a 8-6-1 record, has shown steady improvement in its six-year history at the university, including an appearance in the NYSAIAW Championship in 1981, and its participation in today’s event, while Brockport, which season with a solid 11-1-1 record, is completing its very first year of competition. Coach Amy Kidder’s squad is a young group, with only three seniors. Freshman Kerry Young, a forward from Oneonta, leads the Great Danes with 9 goals and 2 assists, while Brockport Coach Gene Orbaker visits Albany with a team led by Becky Thomas, a senior from Colton with 17 goals and eight assists. Both teams have proved themselves during the season, with Brockport defeating Ithaca (3-1), R.I.T. (3-0), and St. John Fisher twice (4-1, 5-3). In SUNYAC competition, the Golden Eagles have beaten Buffalo 5-3, and Buffalo State 3-2. A 2-2 tie with Geneseo was settled Monday evening in Brockport’s favor after four shootouts! Albany mounted a superb defensive effort earlier in the season to hold Division I Cortland, ranked third nationally at the time of the game, to only one goal, despite a whopping 32 shots on score. The Great Dane effort in that game was led by goalie Cathy Russo, a junior from Orangeburg. Albany defeated Division II Colgate 1-0 and in SUNYAC competition defeated Plattsburgh 2-0 enabling them to come out on top in SUNYAC East and to host this tournament. Coach Orbaker was an All-American soccer player at Brockport when the Eagles won the national title in 1955, while Coach Kidder has been instrumental in the development of the women’s basketball and soccer programs at the University.
