Gaga is well-recognized for her outrageous sense of style as a recording artist, in fashion - just think back to the dress made from meat which she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards 2010, in performance and in her music videos and in her Gaga persona. Her contributions to the music industry have garnered her numerous achievements including five Grammy Awards amongst twelve nominations, two Guinness World Records and the estimated sale of 15 million albums and 51 million singles worldwide. Lady Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986 in Yonkers, New York to Cynthia and Joseph Germanotta, an internet entrepreneur. Despite her affluent upbringing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gaga credits her ambition and drive to succeed in life to her parents who both worked tirelessly to help their daughter achieve her dreams of becoming a star. Gaga’s passion for music was evident from a young age and at the age of four she was encouraged by her mother to learn the piano. Gaga was then accepted to the Juilliard School in Manhattan at the age of 11yrs, but rejected the invitation and attended a private Catholic school in the city instead. During her school years she continued studying music and performing, writing her first piano ballad at the age of 13. Gaga has described her academic life in school as “very dedicated, very studious, very disciplined” but also “a bit insecure, I used to get made fun of for being either too provocative or too eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn’t fit in, and I felt like a freak”. Despite rejection from her academic peers Gaga loved to express herself and at the age of 14yrs she attended an open mike performance in a New York nightclub. A few years later, Gaga was granted early admission to Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), a musical theatre training conservatory at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts she was one of only 20 students in the world to receive the honour of early acceptance. In 2005 at the age of 19yrs and during her second semester Gaga withdrew from CAP21 deciding to instead focus on her musical career. Although unhappy her father agreed to the sabbatical and agreed to pay 10

her rent for a year, on the condition that she re-enrolled at Tisch if unsuccessful in her musical pursuits. Settled in her small apartment, Gaga began to plan her musical career she started a band called the Stefani Germanotta Band (SGBand) with some friends from NYU. The band played a mixture of songs some Gaga self-penned titles alongside classic rock numbers throughout bars in the Greenwich Village & Lower East Side. The band developed a small fan base and caught the eye of music producer Joe Vulpis, who introduced the band to hotspots around New York. It was in 2006 that SGBand reached their career peak at the Songwriters Hall of Fame New Songwriters Showcase at The Cutting Room in June where Wendy Starland, a musician, appeared as a talent scout for music producer Rob Fusari. Starland informed Fusari who was at that time searching for a female singer to front a new band of Gaga’s ability and contacted her. Disbanding the band Gaga travelled to New Jersey to work on songs she had written and compose new material with the music producer. Although the musical relationship between Fusari and Gaga was unsuccessful at first, the pair soon set up a company titled Team Lovechild in which they recorded and produced electropop tracks and sent them to various music industry bosses, one Joshua Sarubin, the head of A&R at Def Jam Recordings signed Gaga however dropped her after just a few months. Being dropped by the label devastated the singer she became increasingly experimental: fascinating herself, with emerging neo-burlesque shows, go-go dancing at bars dressed in little more than a bikini in addition to experimenting with drugs. It was during this time that she met performance artist Lady Starlight, who helped mold her on-stage persona. Starlight explained that, upon their first meeting, Gaga wanted to perform with her to songs she had recorded with Fusari. Like SGBand, the pair soon began performing at many of the downtown club venues. Their live performance art piece was known as “Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue” and, billed as “The Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow”. SPOTLIGHT MAGAZINE

In 2007, Gaga & Lady Starlight were invited to play Lollapalooza music festival, the show was critically acclaimed, and their performance received positive reviews. Having initially focused on avant-garde electronic dance music, Gaga had found her musical niche with her mixture of pop melodies and the glam rock. While Gaga and Starlight were busy performing, producer Rob Fusari continued to work on the songs he had created with Gaga. Fusari sent these songs to his friend, producer and record executive Vincent Herbert. Herbert was quick to sign her to his label Streamline Records, a part of Interscope Records.

Lollapalooza music festival

Having served as an apprentice songwriter under an internship at Famous Music Publishing, which was later acquired by Sony/ ATV Music Publishing, Gaga subsequently struck a music publishing deal with Sony/ATV. As a result, she was hired to write songs for Britney Spears and labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio. Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live. As 2007 came to a close, her former management company introduced her to songwriter and producer RedOne. The first song she produced with RedOne was “Boys Boys Boys”, a mash-up inspired by Mötley Crüe’s “Girls, Girls, Girls” and AC/DC’s “T.N.T.”. Gaga continued her collaboration with RedOne in the recording studio for a week. Despite her secure record deal, she admitted that there was fear about her being too “racy”, “dance-orientated” and “underground” for the mainstream market. 12

Commercial Breakthrough

Lady Gaga’s commercial breakthrough came with her debut single “Just Dance”, “Poker Face”, “Bad Romance” and sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The album earned her six Grammy nominations and two wins as well as a slew of other awards recognition, including a record setting thirteen MTV Video Music Award nominations. Gaga is the first artist in history to claim four #1 hits from a debut album (“Just Dance”, “Poker Face”, “LoveGame” and “Paparazzi”). By 2008, Gaga had relocated to Los Angeles in order to work extensively with her record label to complete her debut album and set up her own creative team “Haus of Gaga”. The Fame album was first released on August 19, 2008 to slow radio play. Gaga supported it by performing around Europe and in small gay clubs around the US in addition to being billed as a supporting artist for the New Kids on the Block’s reunion concert tour. The hit “Just Dance” had preceded the album’s release by four months but only hit the summit of the international charts in January 2009, provoking the instant success of the album, earning her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance Recording and become one of the best-selling singles worldwide.

Gaga achieved a greater unexpected success when “Poker Face”, which reached number one in most major music markets worldwide in early 2009, selling 9.8 million singles worldwide. The follow-up single won the award for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards over nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

The Fame album itself was nominated for Album of the Year while winning Best Dance/Electronica Album at the same ceremony. The album’s success spawned many 2009 honours including Billboard magazine’s Rising Star award and the accumulation of 3 of 9 MTV Video Music Awards nominations, winning Best New Artist with the video for her single “Paparazzi” gaining Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects. In addition to being an opening act on the Pussycat Dolls’ Doll Domination Tour during the first half of 2009, she also embarked on her own six-month critically appreciated worldwide concert tour The Fame Ball Tour which ran from March to September 2009. While she travelled the globe, she wrote The Fame Monster, an EP of eight songs released in November 2009. Each song, dealing with the darker side of fame from personal experience. Gaga became the first artist in digital history to have three singles (alongside “Just Dance” and “Poker Face”) to pass the four million mark in digital sales, its lead single “Bad Romance” topped the charts in eighteen countries while accruing the Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Short Form Music Video. The second single “Telephone”, which features singer Beyoncé, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and became Gaga’s fourth UK number one single; its accompanying music video, although controversial, received positive reception from contemporary critics who praised her for “the musicality and showmanship of Michael Jackson and the powerful sexuality and provocative instincts of Madonna”. Her following single “Alejandro” paired Gaga with fashion photographer Steven Klein for a music video similarly as controversial, critics complimented its ideas and dark nature but the Catholic League attacked Gaga for her alleged use of blasphemy. Despite the controversy surrounding her music videos, Gaga was the first artist to gain over one billion viral views on YouTube. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Gaga won 8 of her 13 nominations, including Video of the Year for “Bad Romance”, which made her the first female artist to be nominated twice for the award. In addition, The Fame Monster garnered a total of six nominations at the 53rd Grammy Awards winning Best Pop Vocal Album and earning her a secondconsecutive nomination for Album of the Year. 14

also continued her live appearances in 2011, performing a one-of-a-kind concert at the Sydney Town Hall in promotion of Born This Way and at the celebration of former US president Bill Clinton’s 65th birthday, wearing a blond wig as a nod to the famous performance of Marilyn Monroe for John F. Kennedy.

What’s Next! 2013 looks set to be another busy year for Lady Gaga. Gaga announced her fourth album’s title and her preference that the title be styled as ARTPOP in capital letters in August 2012, the album is set for release in spring 2013. She is also planning to record a collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett whom she has already collaborated with.

Born This Way

In May 2011, Gaga released her second studio album, Born This Way described as a marriage of electronic music with metal, rock ‘n’ roll, and pop with sledge-hammering dance beats.

Gaga will also make her debut film appearance in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming movie Machete Kills. She will play the role of La Chameleón, starring alongside an ensemble cast in the action film that is due to hit cinema screens in 2013. Over the year many observers have criticised Lady Gaga of mimicking Madonna and this foray into the movies does strike as a “desperately seeking Susan” moment however, with her army of fans and followers Lady Gaga will surely continue to entertain because she was born this way!

Upon release, the album received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its range of different styles and her vocals. Born This Way sold 1.108 million copies in its first week in the US, debuted atop the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in more than 20 other countries. In addition to exceeding 8 million copies in worldwide sales, Born This Way received 3 Grammy Award nominations, including her third consecutive for Album of the Year. In March 2012, Gaga was ranked fourth on Billboard’s list of top money-makers of 2011, grossing $25,353,039 dollars, which included sales from Born This Way and her Monster Ball Tour. Throughout 2011, Gaga continued her musical endeavours by pairing with veteran artists like Tony Bennett to record a jazz version of “The Lady Is a Tramp”. Gaga also lent her vocals to an original duet with Elton John for the animated feature film Gnomeo & Juliet. The song, “Hello, Hello”, was released without Gaga’s vocals but the duet version features in the film. She SPOTLIGHT MAGAZINE

Everything changes with the passing of time. What was the ultimate in fashion some time ago, seems to be old-fashioned now, this doesn’t only happen in the fashion industry, when it comes to flower design, the same thing occurs. This is because floristry works hand in hand with interior design. With the cosmopolitan mix of cultures and taste’s here in southern Spain this mix of interior design help create wonderful flower arrangements and décor pieces. Every country has its particular view of floristry fashion, that’s what makes the coast so unique. Flowers are used to give a certain look to a space and this is never more evident than at the many parties and weddings. Although some people still go for the traditional look, now more than ever we are seeing special theme being chosen. Flowers should enhance and enforce a decoration and must convert a venue in a unique way. As florist we are seeing more and more party themes such as 1001 night, Bollywood, the Sixties, Oriental or Spanish party themes, so you can imagine the different types of flower decorations which are needed to give this final touch. The same happens with colour schemes. Who can tell what the colour of this year is? I am sorry, but can’t give an answer to this question. This leads to another question. Who decides in the fashion industry what is going to be next year’s colour? For sure the designers are responsible for this. When it comes to flower arranging, something similar happens. A good example is the flower decoration done in the Four Seasons Hotels. It all started in the George V Hotel in Paris. Their florist achieved a real breakthrough. Flowers putted

upside down, submerged totally in water or letting groups of flowers sit on top of a vase. In spite of these fabulous innovations, the classic style still has got its public. It is true that white flowers are the most popular choice of flowers because they look good in any surroundings and give a touch of elegance. White flowers are also a good and safe choice when sending flowers as you cannot always sure about the interior of the person’s house you are sending the flowers too. But when it comes to decorating a party, rules are changing and colour is the favoured choice because white flower displays do tend to remind us of weddings. Although we think that we are very open-minded, something classic stays present in the back of our minds. The same happens with multi-coloured flower arrangement at weddings, of course the final effect can be smashing, but didn’t we expect the décor to be white? The only thing that really has changed in flower arranging is the designs of the arrangements. Things seem to be far more natural and the use of greenery is a must now. A flower looks much better when surrounded by different types of leaves. So: What is fashion, what is in, what is cool...? The truth is that there is no satisfying answer. Did you know that male customers mostly prefer multi-colour displays and women normally go for a much softer look? This is because it all depends on personal taste and preferences. I am so glad that the flower business is still very individual and can be considered as an art. It all depends on the design and creativity of the florist and some of us really do a good job!!!!

Standing proudly alongside the exclusive Monster Diesel, this bold range of lifestyle motorcycles is engineered with high attention to user-friendly and safety-conscious detail ensuring the Monster’s cult status remains as authentic as ever. With stylish Trellis frames, excellent chassis components and torque-laden, Desmodromic engines giving that unmistakable sound and character, the entry-level 696 and premium midrange 796 Monsters provide a desirable way to enter the world of Ducati. The Monster 1100EVO underlines the Monster family’s defining concepts of functionality, style and sport with an evolution of the flagship model. Taking its name from the Desmodue Evoluzione engine, which delivers a Monster milestone 100hp, the 1100EVO sports the latest generation exhaust system, Marzocchi front suspension, refined tail-end, bold sport-style graphics and the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) consisting of ABS and 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). With Ducati’s Monster 1100EVO providing the canvas for the new creation, Diesel’s founder Renzo Rosso and the Ducati Design Centre guided stylists to a military inspired theme, expressing the core values of the partnership and realising an avant-garde choice for connoisseurs. While all three models are available in red, the 696 is also offered in dark stealth or stone white and the 796 in arctic white silk or diamond black silk. The 1100EVO in red is enhanced with a white stripe and the sophisticated diamond black scheme with a grey stripe, while the Monster Diesel’s exclusive “Diesel Brave Green matte” livery delivers a rugged military vehicle feel. The Monster 696, 796 and 1100EVO 20th Anniversary editions are ﬁnished in Ducati red, with bronze frames. Ensuring an attractive colour option for everyone, the entire family is further customizable with the innovative and unique Monster Art program. MONSTER FAMILY FEATURES Monster frame An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of all Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and enables a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel. 78

The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the footrest hangers and swing arm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster’s stylish lines. Monster ABS The 2013 Monster family offers all 696 and 796 models with optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), while the 1100EVO and Monster Diesel has ABS ﬁtted as standard equipment. Designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy braking or when braking in low grip conditions, the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a speciﬁc safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate calliper to avoid wheel lock. The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario. Monster instrumentation Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential data by default, and even more

by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear. Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature, ABS status (when applicable), DTC status (1100EVO and Monster Diesel only) and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection. In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobiliser status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam ﬂash button as a stopwatch. For the Monster 1100EVO and Monster Diesel, the display also doubles as a control panel for the 4-level Ducati Traction Control system included in the Ducati Safety Package (DSP), in addition to the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. All Monsters are built “system-ready” for the data acquisition kit, which consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into USB style plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy “battery maintainer” available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Monster Desmo The incredible valve performances of the Desmodue engine are made possible because of Ducati’s unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure proﬁles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam proﬁles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the racewinning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines. Monster quality Having more experience with twin-cylinder high performance engines than any other manufacturer, the aircooled L-Twin remains central to Ducati’s philosophy of motorcycling. This experience, plus constant investment in quality by design, advanced materials and engineering techniques has enabled a distance between service intervals of 7,500 miles (12,000 km) making Ducati ownership even more enjoyable.

stepona is a delightful town that has succeeded in maintaining its pueblo charm and character more so than any other town along the Costal del Sol, with its cobbled narrow streets and its numerous Spanish tapas bars. Estepona once a small fishing village is beautiful and charming place that many escape to get away from the hectic, hedonistic lifestyle of Marbella… Its district covers an area of 137 square kilometres and covers a fertile valley crossed by small streams, almost the entire municipality of Estepona is dominated by the majestic Sierra Bermeja range which reaches 1,449m at the peak of Los Reales. The town’s origin is rather confusing, but it seems that the Phoenicians, who established a commercial trading post at this point, called it Astapa. Some historians connect Estepona to the Iberian town of Saldaba, which others think was in Marbella, and there are those who cite Cilciana as the origin of the village. Be that as it may, on the hill of El Torreón ruins have been found that well may be of this primitive settlement. There are remains of Phoenician and Roman settlements, 140

It has been established with more certainty that this locality was besieged by the Roman Lucius Marcius because its residents had remained loyal to the Carthaginians. In the tenth century, when the Caliphate of Córdoba achieved its greatest splendour, the Muslims founded the city of Estebbuna, the predecessor of Estepona. Later, and after the customary confrontations between Muslims and Christians-Alfonso XI fought a historic battle off the coast of Estepona in 1342 and emerged victorious- the town was then conquered by Enrique IV, under whose ruse the San Luis castle was built, of which some ruins still remain on Castillo Street. Today Estepona has a cosmopolitan feel to it wandering through it narrow streets which open out onto delightful squares which are surrounded by restaurants and bars you instantly feel this is a place for families to unwind and relax together. The first thing that struck me about Estepona is
