T

his verse, inscribed on a stone tablet beside a polo ground South of the fabled silk route from China to the West at the ground in Gilgit, Pakistan, sums up the ancient history of what is believed to be the oldest organized sport in the world. Polo was truly a game of Kings, for most of its reputed 2,500 years of existence. Although the precise origin of polo is obscure and undocumented, there is ample evidence of the game’s regal place in the history of Asia. No one knows where or when stick first met ball after the horse was domesticated by the tribes of Central Asia, but it seems likely that as the use of light cavalry spread throughout Asia Minor, China and the Indian sub-continent, so did this rugged game on horseback.

As mounted armies swept back and forth across this part of the world, conquering and re-conquering, polo was adopted as the most noble of pastimes by the Kings and Emperors, Shahs and Sultans, Khans and Caliphs of the ancient Persians, Arabs, Mughals, Mongols and Chinese. These great rulers and their horsemen real and legendary were expected to be brave warriors, skilful hunters and polo players of exceptional prowess. Although many associate polo with the British Empire, the game’s origins are far older. Four thousand years ago the tribes of central Asia domesticated wild horses, migrated to Persia and mastered the art of warfare on horseback. To practice their manoeuvres, they began playing polo. The first references to the game in Persian literature dates to 600 BC when the Turkomans beat the Persians in a public match. Polo came to the west via India, where the game was introduced in the 16th century. By the middle of the 19th century, polo flourished in several Indian provinces, especially Manipur, where the game of polo was locally known as sagol kangjei (horse hockey) and was observed by puzzled British government officials. One of whom wrote an account of the sport and, in 1869, an officer with the Tenth Hussars, a cavalry regiment based at Aldershot, near London, read about it in a sporting journal. He was so impressed that he immediately ordered his men to start playing makeshift games; within a year polo was a standard part of a British cavalry officer’s training. But the games were confused melees, so in 1874 London’s fashionable Hurlingham Club established a set of rules many of which are still in use today. Duly armed with their new laws, the British took polo around the world and from there its popularity spread to Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. Today “The Sport of Kings” as it is now referred to, is firmly linked to royalty and the world of high society and celebrity. It is played all over the world and is no longer restricted to just the summer season. The modern sport today is truly an international one where the professional circuit can be seen during the summer season in England, the fall season at Palermo in Buenos Aires and the winter season at Palm Beach, America. Arguably the world’s most important polo tournament is the Argentine Open with Argentina currently a Mecca for polo aficionados. Every December 30,000 polo fans attend the Argentine Open, the world’s most prestigious & oldest tournament, to watch the most exhilarating spectacle of professional and fine animals compete at the highest of levels. It is little wonder that the majority of top-ranked players are Argentines, including 27-year-old Adolfo Cambiaso, the sport’s tabloid-handsome superstar and current leading goal scorer on the World Polo Tour.

The blingiest and most celebrity fuelled event of the season, mocked by diehards as a nightclub with some polo attached, is The Audi International Polo, (formerly sponsored by Cartier), some 25,000 polo fans and celebrities descend upon the historic Guards Polo Club in Windsor to watch the national team play for the Coronation Cup and view the royal family. The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park, Sussex, is an aficionado’s choice. Every player dreams of winning the trophy launched by the father of British polo, the late John Cowdray. The success of the Veuve Clicquot and the British Open has seen this tournament expand abroad and since 2010 Cliquot Polo Classic has been held at the Will Rogers State Historic Park in Los Angeles attracting a new set of polo fans. A little closer to home in Spain, The Santa María Polo Club located in San Roque, in the Cadiz province, is considered one of Europe’s leading polo venues. It stands out due to the fact that it organizes over 40 tournaments each year, making it one of the most action-packed and fun filled venues to visit. Playing polo is not cheap. But contrary to popular belief, it is not exclusively the preserve of millionaires. Many people have the misconception that to play polo you have

to be wealthy, although running a high-goal polo team requires a well-padded bank balance, a growing number of enthusiasts have taken to hiring ponies. Many polo clubs now offer initiative programs for junior and female players and the sports seems to be going from strength to strength. There are many ways to get involved with games with many clubs offering lessons and tasters but how much does it really cost? A two-hour introduction to polo costs about 110€, and the lesson covers theory, tactics and safety, the polo swing, polo riding and “stick and ball” practice. Membership prices vary but 590€ to 17,700€ a year, if you do not have your own ponies, horse hire is 90€ to 120€ per chukka, while tournament entry fees are 350€-470€ a team. For those who want their own horse, then there is the cost of buying a pony or two a bottom-end pony, aged in its teens, typically costs 2,950€-3,550€, though some are cheaper. A nine-year-old might cost 9,500€. However, higher up the scale, a pony capable of playing mediumgoal polo costs 17,700€-23,500€, and a high-goal pony 29,500€-plus with some changing hands for as much as 11,800€.

A

s a buyer of property in Spain there are a number of costs and taxes over and above the property price that you will have to pay. Depending upon whether you are buying a new property from a developer, or a resale property from a private individual, you will either have to pay VAT & Stamp Duty, or a transfer tax. The different cases are explained below, along with the other costs and taxes that are common to both cases.

NEW BUILD FROM A DEVELOPER VAT & Stamp Duty These taxes apply for residential properties being sold for the first time or for commercial properties and plots of land. New Properties Purchase Tax: At present the buyers of brand new houses in Spain are liable to pay 10% IVA on the purchase price of residential properties (villa, apartment, etc), if the house is finished or is being built at the time of the purchase, plus an extra 1.5% stamp duty (Actos Jurídicos Documentados - AJD), however if you purchase land, commercial premises or parking spaces, then the IVA (VAT) rises to 21%

RESALE PROPERTY PURCHASE Transfer Tax House buyers of re-sale property are required to pay the Impuesto de Transferencia de Propiedad - Transfer Tax which is now between 8%. – 10%. This tax applies if the property is deemed to be a second or posterior transfer (i.e. not the first time a newly built home is bought), and is paid by the buyer. If any deposit is paid before completion of the sale it is not subject to ITP pro rata. However the full amount of ITP still has to be paid upon completion. In this scenario there is no IVA to pay. Transfer Tax for resale property purchases is calculated according to the following rate:

Any amount up to 400,000€

= 8% Transfer Tax

Any amount between 400,000€ & 700,000€

= 9% Transfer Tax

Any amount in excess of 700,000€

= 10% Transfer Tax

INCREASED PATRIMONY TAX PAYABLE TO SPANISH TREASURY When a property sale in Spain takes place, a capital gains tax must be paid by the seller. According to Spanish fiscal law, the buyer withholds 5% of the total purchase price to make sure that the seller does not take the money and run.

Capital gain tax for non-residents The capital gains tax is payable to the Spanish Treasury (Tesoro Público). The “Impuesto sobre la ganancia patrimonial” (capital gain tax) is a tax on the profits obtained from the sale of assets purchased at a lower price. During the period between the 1st January 2012 and 31st December 2013, capital gain tax for property transfer is 10.5% For non-fiscal residents in Spain the capital gain tax will increase to 21% flat rate, from the previous 19%. Capital gain is calculated as the difference between the sale price and the inflation adjusted purchase value of the property (the adjustment is done by using the official coefficient tables from the Spanish Government). To this value the seller can deduct the adjusted cost of purchase and the expenses on the property, like renovations and works. When a non-resident sells a property in Spain there will be a pre-emptive retention from the tax authorities equivalent to 3% of the sale price, because this amount is in general higher than the capital gain tax to be paid the seller can expect a refund from the Spanish tax authorities during the following fiscal year. There have been talks of increasing the retained percentage but for the time being the tax authorities has set it at 3%.

Capital gain tax for fiscal residents in Spain There will be an increase as well for fiscal residents over 2012 and 2013 with a new progressive table:

Any seller who is over 65 and has been a legal resident in Spain for the last three years does not have to pay this tax. Residents and nonresidents who purchased the property they are now selling before December 1986 are also exempt from the capital gains tax.

PLUSVALIA A special reference should be made to the local capital gains tax – known as Plusvalía. This is a local / municipal tax that only applies to the increase in value of the land upon which urban properties are built, and that is levied at the time of transfer of such properties. It is calculated on the basis of the valor catastral (an administrative equivalent to the UK rateable value) of the property. The amount to be paid will depend on how long the seller has owned the property: the longer the period of time during which the seller has owned the property, the higher the amount of tax. This tax should be paid by the seller, though it is possible for sellers of resale property to try to shift the burden of this tax to the buyer. This practice is unheard of in regions such as the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada, though quite common in the Costa Del Sol. Spain is introducing Energy Certification for all properties and this

will need to be shown when selling. The system is similar to energy classification for white goods and an expert will be required to come and survey the property, at a cost of between €350-550.

COMMON COSTS In addition to these taxes there are also other fees that you must take into consideration such as estate agent fess, legal fees, solicitor fees, notary fees, property registration fees and the mortgage set up fee. In Summary, allow for up to 11% of the purchase price to be set aside for taxes and other costs. If the buyer takes out a mortgage these costs can be somewhat higher due to an additional public deed for the mortgage and the inevitable bank charges involved. In this case transaction costs might reach between 12% and 13% of the value of the property purchased.

The LaFerrari is equipped with dynamic controls that are integrated for the first time ever on a Ferrari road car with active aerodynamics and the HY-KERS system. Thanks to Ferrari’s proprietary logic which govern all the systems, the car can achieve absolute levels of performance, aerodynamic efficiency and handling without any form of compromise in any area. A very advanced and uncompromising approach was also taken with the interior design which features an HMI inspired by F1 single-seaters.

Architecture The LaFerrari’s architecture posed the first challenge for the Prancing Horse team at the planning stage of the design the main aim was to achieve an ideal weight distribution and a compact wheelbase despite the extra bulk of the hybrid system. The result is that all of the masses are situated between the car’s two axles and as close as possible to the floor to lower its centre of gravity and thus guarantees dynamic handling. this regard, the seat is fixed and can be tailored to the drivers needs while both the pedal box and steering wheel are adjustable. The driving position is similar to that of a race model and was designed after a consultation with the Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, who played an active role throughout the development process. The LaFerrari’s chassis features no less than four different types of carbon-fibre, all hand-laminated and autoclave-cured in the racing department using the same design and production methods as the Formula 1 car. This helped optimise the design: various functions were applied (e.g. seats and battery compartment) to the chassis to improve torsional rigidity (+27%) and beam stiffness (+22%) whilst cutting weight.

Powertrain The LaFerrari is the first car in Ferrari’s history to be powered by the HY-KERS system. The ICE represents the pinnacle of engine development and research, with a 6262 cc V12 that punches out 800 CV and revs to a maximum of 9,250 rpm, a record for an engine of this displacement. It also features a very high 13.5:1 compression ratio and a high specific output equal to 128 CV per litre. The engine is coupled with a 120 Kw (163 CV) electric motor, giving it a combined power output of 963 CV. The high torque levels available at low revs from the electric motor allowed the engineers to optimise the internal combustion engine’s performance at higher revs, thus providing a constant supply of power throughout the rev range. Total torque generated is in excess of 900 Nm. The hybrid system is composed of two electric motors developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli – one powering the driven wheels and the second the ancillaries – and a battery pack attached to the floor of the chassis consisting of cells that are assembled in the

Scuderia Ferrari department where the KERS for the F138 is also made. The Scuderia’s expertise allowed considerable savings in weight and size of the individual components and the batteries weigh just 60 kg while providing the highest energy density possible for this kind of application. The batteries are charged in different ways: under braking (even hard braking with the ABS active) and every time the V12 produces more torque than required, such as in cornering. In the latter instance, rather than the being sent to the wheels, the excess torque is converted to energy and stored in the batteries. The electric motor is coupled with the F1 dual-clutch gearbox to the benefit of optimal weight distribution, but also to boot energy efficiency as torque is instantly avaible to the wheels and, vice versa, from the wheels to the electric motor in recharging.

Styling The Ferrari design team led by Flavio Manzoni developed the LaFerrari’s styling working in close synergy with the engineers to emphasise the exacting link between form and function.
