The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) has compiled the following list, making it easy for all of us to eat locally and to eat in season. By this time of year, most Maine produce is coming from cold storage. However, a few Maine farmers grow vegetables in heated greenhouses throughout the winter, and others grow frost tolerant crops in unheated structures to extend the seasons. You may be pleasantly surprised to find a good selection of greens at the winter farmers’ markets well into December. the “Maine Local 20” There are 20 foods that Maine has the capacity to produce year-round, and thanks to our innovative farmers and producers, this list is growing all of the time! Called the “Maine Local 20,” the list includes fruits and vegetables, dairy, protein/meat, grains and sweeteners. So there’s no reason why we can’t eat a balanced diet consisting primarily of foods produced in Maine all year!

ost farmers’ markets in Maine operate from May to October, although a growing
number of winter markets are giving us access to locally grown foods direct from the producer year-round. Markets provide an opportunity to meet the farmers, mingle with your neighbors, and select from the freshest, local foods available. This list is current as of fall 2014. Guide to pesticides in produce The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a national non-profit dedicated to using public information and education efforts to protect public health Summer 20 and the environment. Each year, EWG analyzes the test results of pesticide 14 residue on the most commonly available fruits and vegetables to determine which are the most and least contaminated. Almost all of the studies are conducted after the produce has been rinsed or peeled to best mimic common conditions for consumption. HOME ENERGY LOANS Efficiency Maine offers low interest loans up to $25,000 for up to 20 years through its energy loan programs (with no closing costs). FEDERAL TAX CREDITS Federal tax credits are available to homeowners for wind, solar and geothermal systems through 2016. The credit incentive is 30% of the cost of the project

STATE REBATES Efficiency Maine currently offers rebates of up to $1,500 toward the cost of qualifying energy upgrades to a home’s insulation or heating system. DIY: Greener cleaners
A
ccording to the Environmental Protection Agency, the air in our homes can be many times more polluted than the air outside. Many things can contribute to poor indoor air quality including building materials, mold, radon and household cleaners. Choosing cleaning products made from all natural ingredients is one way to lessen your exposure to environmental toxins. Or you can make your own cleaners with a few simple ingredients, and you’ll enjoy a sparkling clean house and a little extra cash in your pocket!
Basic ingredients: White vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, natural liquid soap (such as castile soap), tea tree, lavender or rosemary oil* Basic spray cleaner: Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Mirror/glass cleaner: Use basic spray cleaner noted above. Spray glass or mirror and wipe with old newspapers.
All-purpose cleaner: Mix 1 qt. warm water, 1 tsp. of natural liquid soap, and ½ cup of vinegar or lemon juice. Optional: 1 tsp. of lavender, tea tree or rosemary oil (all have anti-bacterial qualities).
Drain cleaner: Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain (a chop stick can help it get in). Follow with 1 cup of vinegar. Mixture will foam. Wait five minutes and flush with boiling water. Repeat if necessary.
*Note: Mixtures made with essential oils have a shelf life of about one month.

These accessible pathways serve not only bicycle enthusiasts but walkers, runners, x-c skiers and snowshoers, and even horseback riders. Here’s just a brief sampler of what’s available. Androscoggin River Bicycle Path
Kennebec River Rail Trail
Extending for nearly three miles along the scenic Androscoggin River, this path connects downtown Brunswick with the Cooks Corner shopping district. Parking is at Water Street in town or at Grover’s Lane at Cook’s Corner. Access from Topsham is via the bike lanes on ME 196. More info: www. brunswickme.org
Pedal through history on this 6.5-mile paved trail along the Kennebec River from Augusta and Gardiner. Fun side trips include the State Capitol and Museum and Fort Western. Mountain Division Trail A paved, six-mile section of this former narrow gauge rail corridor between Portland and North Conway, NH leads through the beautiful countryside near the Saco River and Sebago Lake in Windham, Gorham and Standish. Parking is at Gambo Road in Windham and on ME 35 in Standish.
Back Cove Trail and Eastern Promenade Trail Cycle through the “Forest City” of Portland; first around the tree-lined Back Cove and then along the Eastern Promenade with expansive views of Casco Bay and its many islands on this paved 5-mile route through Maine’s largest urban center. uilding community sustainability requires that we re-skill ourselves and share knowledge that may be lost or hidden in our modern society. The following books are some of the titles that we have been reading at the Resilience Hub in the last year, and some of the skills and knowledge we have been putting into practice in our lives.
The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Katz Katz is a fermentation revivalist whose first book, Wild Fermentation, introduced many people to fermentation and inspired them to experiment with their own ferments at home. I got the Art of Fermentation from Katz last year when he came to Frinklepod Farm in Arundel and this book has been a constant read and reference for me as I try new ferments. Katz brings together fermentation traditions from around the world and makes these recipes accessible, entertaining and delicious.
by Allison Carroll Duffy As a Master Food Preserver, I am always on the lookout for tried and true recipes for preserving the harvest that make use of organic, local and nonsynthetic ingredients. Imagine my joy at finding this gem written by our very own Allison Carroll Duffy of Brunswick. The recipes just plain work and are suitable for food preservation experts as well as those new to the skill.

by David L. Spahr After picking up this book last year, it has been my go-to book for mushroom identification. Spahr lives in Washington, Maine, and the mushrooms he features and beautifully presents in this book can all be found here. Spahr’s photos of mushrooms are some of the best around, and he provides clear and detailed information about each mushroom; including habitat, medicinal qualities, and recipes.

Preserving with Pomona’s Pectin

These methods are lowenergy and produce nutrientrich foods that can last a winter. As an avid fermenter, I look forward to exploring new preservation techniques that are rooted in traditional French methods.

Paradise Lot by Eric Toensmeier While looking for a good read that also allowed me to dig deeper into the local permaculture knowledge, I chose this gem! The down-toearth (and sometimes humorous) account of how two guys from the northeast created an abundant and thriving homestead on a tenth of an acre in western Massachusetts was simply enjoyable AND informative. Forgotten Skills of Cooking by Darina Allen I came across this book in Ireland last year and, being a fan of traditional foodways, it really grabbed me! The recipes are based on Allen’s life experience farming and foraging in the countryside of Ireland and extremely transferrable to the abundance of local ingredients we enjoy here in Maine.
People & Permaculture by Looby Macnamara A powerful guide for both seasoned permaculturists and those new to the concept. The book asks us to look deeply at ourselves and our relationships as the basis for establishing abundant systems throughout our lives. Macnamara provides practical exercises to initiate positive change. This book is a mindful map to ecological living. The Resilience Hub is a collaborative non-profit organization based in Portland, Maine, whose mission is to build resilience at the personal, household and community levels while creating thriving examples of abundance based on ecological wisdom. They offer a range of events, education and training as well as resilience-building services and projects.
