ids dressing up and clothing goes extremely well together. Every parents had a wish that their children to be well-groomed at all times, and making them teach how to dress up nicely could be quite a talent when they start growing up. Toddler dress up is fun, enjoyable and could sometimes be educational for children. Though boys clothing might be harder to find, it isn’t impossible to look for one. Some parents could spend more for girls clothing, because they could be much more intricately designed and made of more expensive materials. Halloween costumes are among the most widely and popularly sold costumes in the online stores. These costumes are available for both boys and girls of all age groups. A variety of fancy dresses can also be found in most of the online and offline stores. Apart from these varieties, there are bikinis, jumpers and pajamas for kids. Children dresses need to be chosen according to the fabric and comfort offered to the kids. Clothes need not be fashionable as comfort is the most important factor to consider before buying any type of outfit. Accessories and hats complete any unique baby clothes or children clothes outfit. Consider how some sparkling, luxurious accessories can turn any casual outfit into runway worthy, trendy baby clothes. There are hundreds of creative ideas regarding the dressing up of babies with very colourful baby clothing. The fun of dressing up a baby is mostly with the parents, but they must be sure that the clothes are comfortable enough to be worn for long hours. Children’s clothing isn’t exactly cheap, and this is what makes parents think twice about buying outfits for their child.

How to keep your Fruits and vegetables fantastically fresh…

(A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)

ood, clothing and shelter are basic physiological needs. On the food front, we cannot help buying fresh fruits and vegetables. Experts prefer to make a rainbow of fruits and vegetables on your eating table to balance nutrition. So we buy and bring home fresh fruits and vegetables and stash them in the refrigerator to maintain their freshness. And then we do wonder what has happened to make them shrivel, rot, slimy, brown, soft, or go limp in a few days. Most of the time, the culprit is the naturally occurring Ethylene Gas in fruits. Ethylene gas is a plant hormone produced by many fruits as they ripen. It helps the plant by ripening its fruit, opening its flowers, and shed its leaves. It is a natural process. It is not harmful to us human beings either. Towards example, let us consider the case of bananas as they ripen and turn from green to yellow in due course of time. In general, fruits that continue to ripen after being picked are the ones that produce high levels of ethylene gas. Plants produce ethylene gas for all kinds of reasons. It is a matter of the level being especially high during ripening , that causes storage problems. If you store an ethylene-sensitive fruit or vegetable [See List B below] next to an ethylene-producing fruit [See List A below], you can affect the former’s quality and reduce its shelf life. This will cause premature ageing and decaying of the ethylene-sensitive food. This results in the loss of freshness. Resultantly, it is important to understand the best way to store fresh fruits and vegetables, for a longer time. Let us understand the methodology and the science behind it that works: Now as you understand the ethylene gas in fruits, in particular, ripens and over ripens the fruits themselves and the ones beside them. So don’t store them together in a refrigerator drawer or next to each other on the counter or in the pantry. Our vegetables need to breathe. So it is beneficial to poke holes in the plastic bags you store them in, or keep them in reusable mesh bags. An airtight plastic bag is the worst choice for storing vegetables. And don’t pack veggies tightly together as they need space for air circulation or they’ll spoil at a faster pace. One more thing to remember, don’t clean produce until you’re ready to use it. Why? Washing fruits or vegetables before storing them makes them more likely to spoil, because dampness encourages bacteria growth The two tables below list which fruits and vegetables are Ethylene Producers and which are Ethylene Sensitive. Note that some fruits appear on both lists List A: Ethylene Producers Apples, apricots, avocados, bananas (ripe), blueberries, cantaloupe, cherimoyas, cranberries, figs, green onions, guavas, grapes, honeydew, kiwifruit, mangoes, nectarines, papayas, passion fruit, peaches, pears, persimmons, plums, potatoes, prunes, tomatoes List B: Ethylene-Sensitive Produce Asparagus, bananas (unripe), blackberries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, cucumbers, eggplant, endive, garlic, green beans, kale, leafy greens, leeks, lettuce, okra, onions, oranges,[moderately sensitive] parsley, peas, peppers, raspberries, spinach, squash, strawberries, sweet potatoes, watercress, watermelon Specific examples of what happens when an ethylene-sensitive fruit or vegetable is next to an ethylene-producing fruit

Lettuce leaves can start having spots. Green beans can lose their color. Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower can become yellow and their leaves can shed. Cucumbers and summer squash can become soft. Egg plant and sweet potatoes can become brown and discolored. Also, the more damaged a fruit is, the more ethylene gas it produces. So, if you have a soft apple or apricot in the refrigerator, separate it from everything else. Use it up immediately. What’s the best solution? Keep Ethylene-sensitive fruits and vegetables away from ethylene-producing fruits and vegetables. With the exception of tomatoes, most ethylene producers are fruits. Store vegetables in a separate place from fruits in the refrigerator. Perhaps use a separate crisper drawer. Many of the ethylene producers can be stored on a kitchen counter, outside of the refrigerator. Many fruits need to ripen at room temperature. Once ripe, you can place them in your refrigerator. But try not to place any of the ethylene producers next to an ethylene-sensitive fruit or vegetable. Use zip lock plastic bags to keep items separate. Don’t refrigerate tomatoes. Refrigeration causes tomatoes to lose their taste. If you keep a fruit bowl on your kitchen counter, do not have bananas in the same bowl as apples (which are better refrigerated, anyway), apricots, avocados, nectarines, papayas, peaches, pears, or tomatoes will get lumpy, mushy or rotten. Keep all these items in separate places in your kitchen, if possible. Next time you go to shop, take a good look at the produce section of your local supermarket to see where and how items are placed. Most stores will keep the bananas away from the apples. The tomatoes are not refrigerated and are away from other fruits. Vegetables are in water jet spring sections, away from the fruit. Your local grocer doesn’t want to promote premature aging of their produce. How to store some fruits and veggies: BANANAS: Break the bunch apart. Then wrap each piece in a plastic wrap. That will reduce the emission of ethylene gas, and the bananas will ripen slowly. Once a banana reaches the desired amount of ripeness, you can refrigerate it; the cold will slow it from ripening further CUCUMBERS: They hate to be in a cold temperature. Anything below 10 degree Celsius will cause them to spoil faster, if you must refrigerate them, do it for no more than three days. Cucumbers also are sensitive to ethylene gas, so keep them away from bananas, melons and tomatoes. ASPARAGUS: Trim a half-inch off the end of the stalks and then stand them up in a small amount of water (covered loosely with a plastic bag) in the refrigerator, like a bouquet. The way your local grocer

keeps it fresh and worth selling. They stay fresh for about four days. Re-trim the ends before using. TOMATOES: Store standard-size tomatoes stem side down. It keeps moisture from collecting around the stem and causing spoilage. It also depends on the type of tomato: A thin-skinned, delicate heirloom will have a different result than a thick-skinned supermarket variety. Do not forget to keep tomatoes out of the refrigerator. The cold breaks down their cell structure, making them mushy. Once they ripen at room temperature, eat them at peak flavor or freeze them to use later in cooking. CELERY: To keep it crisp, refrigerate it wrapped tightly in aluminum foil, not plastic wrap, so the ethylene gas it produces can escape. Re-wrap tightly after each use. Store celery sticks like carrot sticks: submerged in water in a tightly covered container. Tin foil seems to also do a very good job of keeping moisture in for a while, while not being too airtight. Some sources state that the foil is a good method because it does not trap ethylene gas, GARLIC: Store at room temperature, in an open container, to allow air circulation. Don’t take off a clove’s protective papery husk until you’re ready to use it. And it’s fine to store garlic next to its family. Onions and garlic belong to the same Allium genus family along with shallots, leeks, and chives. ONIONS: Onions can be stored like garlic at room temperature on a counter top. Keep them away from potatoes. And don’t put them in the refrigerator: The humidity and cold temperature will cause onions to turn mushy. Storing them away from light also helps keep them from losing their natural taste. POTATOES: Keep them in a dark and cool place, but don’t refrigerate. The cold, damp air in the refrigerator causes their starches to turn into sugars, which can affect taste and texture. Store them in a paper bag — more breathable than plastic — in a cool spot, such as a pantry. Keep them away from onions or fruits like apples that exude ethylene gas, which can make your spuds begin to sprout. Potatoes and onions Do taste great together in hash browns. But when it comes storing them raw, you need to keep them well apart. The reason, as the food safety experts at Penn State University point out, is that onions and potatoes can release moisture and gases that will cause the other to spoil faster. CARROTS : First, trim off any green tops; they draw out moisture and cause carrots to go limp pretty quickly. Trimmed, unpeeled carrots can be refrigerated in an unsealed zip-top bag in the crisper drawer for about two weeks. Trimmed carrots (such as baby-cut carrots or carrot sticks) will last longer when kept submerged in a tightly covered container filled with water. Change the water frequently.

Easy ways of looking beautiful Banana and Egg Hair Treatment You can easily bring shining in your hair by mixing one egg and a mashed up with banana. Apply it as a thick paste to your hair and leave it on for 10 – 30 minutes. Wash it our doing your usual hair washing ritual (if you usually use a store-bought conditioner you’ll probably only need to condition the ends). Simple Honey Face Mask Raw honey is naturally antibacterial and a super quick way to get soft, beautiful skin. Once in a week apply a tablespoon or so of raw honey (not the processed stuff parading as honey) and gently warm it by rubbing your fingertips together. Spread on your face. Leave on for 5 – 10 minutes and then use warm water to gently rinse it off and pat dry. Then bask in the glow of your honey-awesomeness. This raw honey is awesome, by the way. Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying Shampoo For those who are using commercial shampoos: To help eliminate any build up in your hair, mix ¼ cup organic apple cider vinegar (like this) with 1 cup water. Follow with your usual conditioner.

Elbow and Knee Exfoliate and Skin Brightener Cut an orange in half and rub it on your elbows and knees. Helps soften those rough patches. And it smells good. (Rinse off the sticky mess when you are done.) Gentle Body Scrub Mix a 2 to 1 ratio of olive oil and sea salt to make a quick and effective body scrub. This helps get rid of dead skin cells creating softer, more glowing skin. And this natural beauty tip is much cheaper that expensive store bought body scrubs. Easy Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment This is one of my favourite all natural beauty tips. Use melted coconut oil as a deep conditioning hair and scalp treatment. Massage coconut oil into your scalp and then work it through your hair. Leave it on for a couple of hours and then wash it out using shampoo (no need to condition unless you have really long hair

and then maybe just the ends.) You may want to try just a little coconut oil on a little section of hair and see if you can get it out before you do this. Otherwise you might have really greasy (but soft!) hair for a few washes. NOT that I’m speaking from personal experience of anything (*cough*). Simple Toxic-Free Shaving Cream Use coconut oil on your legs as a natural replacement for your shaving cream. Talk about a simple, natural beauty tip. All Natural Black Head Removal Place 4 or 5 drops of raw honey on an open lemon wedge. Then rub the lemon on your face for a minute, emphasizing any trouble areas. Leave the mixture on for 5 minutes and rinse with cold water. Dry Brushing for Better Skin Dry brushing is a simple detoxification process for your body. It stimulates a number of organs through a gently massage. It also helps the lymphatic system, eliminates dead skin coatings, strengthens the immune system, can eliminate cellulite, stimulates the hormones, and can help tighten skin through better circulation. Best of all, it’s cheap and easy. Learn more about dry brushing and how to do it here. Here’s a great skin brush to get you started! Take Care Remember, the best all natural beauty tips and secrets are not quick fixes. They require good sleep, stress management, proper nutrition, and physical exercise.

style of dress, including garments, accessories, and hairstyle, especially as characteristic of a particular country, period, or people of a province, is called a costume . Costumes of Punjab are figurative of the dazzling, pulsating and vibrant culture and lifestyle of the people of the province. The costumes are an exciting blend of colours, comfort , alacrity , beauty and happiness. Men

generally wear the traditional dress of Kurta and Pyjama. The Kurta is worn on the top and is a little loose apparel with a straight cut for comfortable movement. Dresses are not mere clothing but indicates tradition, culture and life style of a particular group of people which in the end represents a nation in toto. Even the dimensions, fabric and embellishment of dresses can indicate some of the

I

demographics of a nation. Punjabi dresses for men comprises Pagri [Turban], Kurta and Pyjama. The Turban Circa, thirty million majority dominatingsikhs in Punjab are recognized the world over by their unique headgear called the Pug or Pagdi. The turbaned Sikh is a common sight in most parts of the world. It will not be out of place to mention that it is a symbol of their religion and a sign of honor and respect to their Reverend Almighty Tenth Guru Gobind Singh JeeMaharaj. Punjabi Sikhs are normally do not cut their hair or shave as their religion does not permit them to do so. However, with demanding times, compelling work requirements, the modern generation of Punjabis is grappling to keep this sacred religious tradition intact. The turbans are worn in various colors to match their Punjabi dress and tie.The turban as well as the other articles of faith worn by Skhs have an immense spiritual as well as temporal significance. Sikhs wear the turban out of love and obedience to the wishes of the founders of their faith. Kurta Payjama Kurta-Pyjama, consisting of two pieces of garments, is one of the basic clothing of the Punjabi men. The first garment is a kurta that is like a loose long shirt almost reaching the knees, whereas the second one is the pajama or pyjama, which is a light weight drawstring trouser- a leg garment. It is similar to a shirt but with long sleeves and no opening in the front. Some men also wear the Kurta with the Lungi or Tehmat, which is a kind of sarong. During winters they can be seen wearing bright colourful sweaters. Jutti The traditional dress of Punjabi men includes the traditional shoes called the Jutti. Jutti is commonly made of leather with a lot of embroideries, in silver

and gold threads. These days, you can find Jutti in rubber soles as well. It is a type of handcrafted footwear typically associated with the Punjabis. The juttis have no left-foot or right foot distinction and take the shape of the feet over a period of time. Patiala and Amritsar have become the major transfer centers for Indian handcrafted juttis. Many traders supply Punjabi Juttis from these places to India and other parts of the world. Men’s wear a lot Jewelry that match their traditional custom fit. They are plentifulThe important ones are: Mala – Necklace of large beads handing down long and loose Kaintha –This fits rather close to the neck, the pendant may be omitted Nam – An amulet, round or star shaped, suspender from a twist of colored silk thread Tawiz -A square amulet, jeweled or otherwise Takhti –A flat square plate engraved with figures etc . Zanjiri – A set of chains Chandarmah – A large gold flat medal suspended by a single ring on a silk chair or cord Ponchi – A series of strings of shells or small gold elongated beads worn on the wrist Kangan or Kara or Gokru – A bracelet of stiff metal. Sarpesh –The jeweled aigrette worn in front of the turban. Kalgi – Plume in jeweled setting. Mukat or Mutakh – A head dress worn by Hindus at weddings Turah-I-marwarid – Tassels of pearls worn on the turban Bala – Very large ring Murki - Smaller earrings of the same shape Dur – a small earring with three studs Birbali – a broad earring with three studs Durichah – an ear-ring with pendant tassel

How to look elegant and sophisticated

t’s probably easy to identify the handful of wardrobes staples that will make you look sophisticated. Sophisticated look for women includes; blazers, loafers and pencil skirts. These dresses come in the form of versatile and smart investments. After all, styles like pyjama dressing and at leisure aren’t necessarily the most elegant of choices though they are amazing, and we still want you to wear them. Because of this, we tasked ourselves with hunting down some major trends right now that won’t sacrifice sophistication, and what we found was a list of six looks we think you’ll be excited to try. And because we want to make sure you’re always well stocked, of course, we threw in some shopping for you too. Boudoir Dressing: The Boudoir offers a wide range of services and each of these is tailored to suit the individual requirements and needs of each person. If there is one thing that I understand about the clients at The Boudoir, it is that the quality of your feminine image is of paramount importance.

hot summer weekend?

Skirt Suiting : Get in the girly minis, lend a hint of drama in glowy maxis or choose the show-stealer midis – the season is all about those playful hemlines. Tap your flirty side with our edit of women’s skirts, ‘cause whimsical prints, fun styles and fabrics are all you need to master the season’s hottest looks.

Dress over pants: The dress-over-pants trend has taken quite a bit of flak over the last couple of years. While it may seem like a man-repelling choice to stick a long frock on top of your pants, I’m here today to prove that this tricky layering combination is actually one of the chicest in all the land.Seriously, this look from The Row’s S/S 15 runway is everything. I’d wear this every day if I could. The slits that extend above the waistline are the perfect flash of skin— like the new cutout dress.

Cold Shoulder: Cold Shoulder tops look casual but classy with their peek-a-boo cut outs. You can wear them with just about anything. I like the look of one worn over jeans, especially when it’s a little loose and flowing. Can’t you just imagine wearing a breezy, cut out shoulder top down by the beach, out on the restaurant patio, or when you’re out walking around some cute little town in the middle of a

Forgetfulness - How much is normal? By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)

Contd. from previous issue Misattribution Misattribution occurs when you remember something accurately in part, but misattribute some detail, like the time, place, or person involved. Another kind of misattribution occurs when you believe a thought you had was totally original when, in fact, it came from something you had previously read or heard but had forgotten about. As with several other kinds of memory lapses, misattribution becomes more common with age. As you age, you absorb fewer details when acquiring information because you have some what more trouble in concentrating and processing information rapidly. And as you grow older, your memories grow older as well. And old memories are especially prone to misattribution. Suggestibility Suggestibility is the vulnerability of your memory to the power of suggestion — information that you learn about an occurrence after the fact becomes incorporated into your memory of the incident, even though you did not experience these details. Although little is known about exactly how suggestibility works in the brain, the suggestion fools your mind into thinking it’s a real memory. Bias Even the sharpest memory isn’t a flawless snapshot of reality. In your memory, your perceptions are filtered by your personal biases — experiences, beliefs, prior knowledge, and even your mood at the moment. Your biases affect your perceptions and experiences when they’re being encoded in your brain. And when you retrieve a memory, your mood and other biases at that moment can influence what information you actually recall. Although everyone’s attitudes and preconceived notions bias their memories, there’s been virtually no research on the brain mechanisms behind memory bias or whether it becomes more common with age. Persistence All of us worry about forgetting a few things. But in some cases people are anguished by memories they wish they could forget, but can’t. The persistence of memories of shocking events, negative feelings, and enduring fears is another form of memory problem. Some of these memories accurately reflect perplexing events, while others may be negative distortions of reality. People suffering from depression are particularly prone to having persistent, disturbing memories. So are people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD can result from many different forms of traumatic exposure — for example, sexual abuse. Unfortunately, by age 60, more than half of adults have concerns about their memory. However, minor memory lapses that occur with age are not usually signs of something serious, such as Alzheimer’s disease, but rather the result of normal changes in the structure and function of the brain. One should not forget that things will change, though on a snail’s pace, due to the age factor as body is getting old. Medical science believes in a better world.

Daily scientists are fighting for a better life. With sweeping inventions in medical science in the last 40 years, life is now breathing easy. The average longevity in our Greater Vancouver area is 86 years as on date and it is projected to increase tremendously, with stem cell technology flexing its muscles to eradicate diseases. Currently, age is just a number. On one side, people with age bracket of early 30’s are having life threatening diseases - Heart problems,Brain Stroke, Diabetes, Hypertensionand on the other hand, people in their 70’s are almost disease free. The difference lies in our daily life style. Naturalways to improve memory Lifestyle choices and whether or not we implement memory-boosting techniques in our dayto-day lives contribute to the overall health of our brains. This helps our ability to remember both new and old information. Mind-sharpening strategies do help us to keep our memory intact for many decades: 1)Get a Goodnight’s Sleep - Sleep is a key time for the brain to strengthen the connections between neurons, thus helping us remember more of our

tasks. One should get 7-8 hours of sleep every day. And yes, naps count. I call it a Power Nap, which lasts for 20 -25 min. Experts are of the opinion that if you do only one thing to improve your memory, getting more sleep should be it. If you have trouble sleeping fast, drink a warm cup of milk a half hour before hitting the bed. 2Jog Your Memory - Exercise increases your heart rate which gets blood flowing to your brain, thus keeping your memory sharp. Running, swimming, biking - any form of exercise - for at least 30 minutes helps enlarge the hippocampus, which is regarded as the ‘memory center of the brain’. In fact, physical activities that require hand-eye coordination or complex motor skills are particularly beneficial for brain building. If you don’t have time for a full workout, squeeze in a 20-minute walk. This will reboot your brain. 3Multitasking– The human brain is not wired to multitask. Instead, it switches focus from one thing to the other, which is why it is difficult to read a book and hold a conversation at the same time. When you’re dabbling in too many things, you’re bound to forget. Multitasking will slow you down, so make it a point to concentrate on the task at hand. It’s very crucial. Studies suggest saying it out loud: “I left my keys on the dresser”, etc. so the brain can process it. The brain needs about eight seconds to commit a piece of information to memory, so if you’re talking on the phone and lowering down garage door, you are unlikely to remember that you locked it. We misplace things regularly. One of the reasons for that is multi-tasking which makes it harder to concentrate on one particular task. 4)Use Mnemonic Devices - Mnemonic devices are tools which help you memorize in an easier format words, lists, concepts, et al. • Acronyms: They are basically abbreviations used a word to help you jog your memory. For example: CART can be carrots, apples, raspberries and tomatoes, which can be used to remember your grocery list. • Rhymes: If you need to remember a name, get creative. “Mary loves cherry” • Acrostics: NEWS is an acrostic where N is for North, E for East, W for West and S for South Contd. in Next Issue.

AMRIT PURE BASMATI RICE

asmati Rice only 1% production of the total rice grown in India. This rice is different from other rice mainly due to the aroma and elongation post cooking. Basmati rice has been reported in India since the early 19th century though it may have been named differently. `Bas` in Hindi language means `aroma`and `Mati` means `full` of hence the word Basmati i.e. full of aroma. Each grain of aged basmati rice on cooking, separates out and gives a delightful taste. It is truly an Indian delicacy. Amrit Basmati is a specially bred variety of basmati rice with all the great Indian traditional taste but with lower glycemic index value. Lower (GI) foods are good for diabetic patients to help control thier blood suger levels through diet. Accroding to the American Diabetes Association: the glycemic index, or GI, measures Carbohydrate how a Carbohydratecontaining food raises blood glucose. Foods are ranked based on how they compare to a reference food-either glucose or white bread. A food with a high GI raises blood glucose more than a food with a medium or low GI. Meal planning with the GI involves choosing foods that have alow or medium GI. If eating a food with a high GI, you can combine it with low GI foods to help balance the meal. MACULAR DEGENERATION and hold the grid 12 to 15 inches away from your face in good light.

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

A

ge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a deterioration or breakdown of the eye’s macula. The macula is a small area in the retina — the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. The macula is the part of the retina that is responsible for your central vision, allowing you to see fine details clearly. The macula makes up only a small part of the retina, yet it is much more sensitive to detail than the rest of the retina (called the peripheral retina). The macula is what allows you to thread a needle, read small print, and read street signs. The peripheral retina gives you side (or peripheral) vision. If someone is standing off to one side of your vision, your peripheral retina helps you know that person is there by allowing you to see their general shape. Many older people develop macular degeneration as part of the body’s natural aging process. There are different kinds of macular problems, but the most common is age-related macular degeneration. With macular degeneration, you may have blurriness, dark areas or distortion in your central vision, and perhaps permanent loss of your central vision. It usually does not affect your side, or peripheral vision. For example, with advanced macular degeneration, you could see the outline of a clock, yet may not be able to see the hands of the clock to tell what time it is. In Macular degeneration there is Formation of Deposits called Drusen under the Retina and in some Cases Growth of Abnormal Blood Vessels under the Retina It alone never Causes total blindness, one can still continue to have useful vision using Peripheral vision , The Actual Impact on Vision may be Minimal When macular degeneration does lead to loss of vision, it usually begins in just one eye, though it may affect the other eye later. Many people are not aware that they have macular degeneration until they have a noticeable vision problem or until it is detected during an eye examination. 1) Dry Macular Degeneration Most people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. This condition is caused by aging and thinning of the tissues of the macula. Macular degeneration usually begins when tiny yellow or white pieces of fatty protein called drusen form under the retina. Eventually, the macula may become thinner and stop working properly. With dry macular degeneration, vision loss is usually gradual. People who develop dry macular degeneration must carefully and constantly monitor their central vision. If you notice any changes in your vision, you should tell your eye Specialist .There is no Medication or Treatment Some may benefit from Vitamin Therapy The Eye doctor will ask you to monitor your Vision by a Special Chart Called the Amsler Grid you should use it every day to monitor your vision, as dry macular degeneration can change into the more damaging wet form. To use the Amsler grid, wear your reading glasses

Cover one eye. Look directly at the center dot with the uncovered eye and keep your eye focused on it. While looking directly at the center dot, note whether all lines of the grid are straight or if any areas are distorted, blurry or dark. Repeat this procedure with the other eye. If any area of the grid looks wavy, blurred or dark, contact your ophthalmologist. If you detect any changes when looking at the grid, you should notify your ophthalmologist immediately. 2) Wet Macular Degeneration About 10 percent of people who have macular degeneration have the wet form, but it can cause more damage to your central or detail vision than the dry form. In this Abnormal Blood Vessels begin to Grow Underneath the Retina,They may Leak Blood Or Fluid,Blurring or Distorting central vision,Vision Loss in this Type may be Faster The longer these abnormal vessels leak or grow, the more risk you have of losing more of your detailed vision. Also, if abnormal blood vessel growth happens in one eye, there is a risk that it will occur in the other eye. The earlier that wet macular degeneration is diagnosed and treated, the better chance you have of preserving some or much of your central vision. That is why it is so important that you and your ophthalmologist monitor your vision in each eye carefully. RISK FACTORS Recently much new information on macular degeneration has been discovered. Genetic changes appear to be responsible for approximately half the reason for individuals getting macular degeneration. Additionally, there are other risk factors for developing the disease. Many older people develop macular degeneration as part of the body’s natural aging process. One large study found that the risk of getting macular degeneration jumps from about 2 percent of middle-aged people in their 50s to nearly 30 percent in people over age 75. 4Genetic Factors 4Oxidative Stress 4Smoking 4High Blood Pressure 4High Cholesterol 4Diabetes DIAGNOSIS Many people do not realize they have a macular problem until they notice they have blurred or distorted vision. Regular eye exams by an ophthalmologist may help to detect problems or early stages of macular degeneration before you are even aware of them. Eye Specialist uses Ophthalmoscope to Diagnose, May use drops to Dilate your Pupil, The Dr may ask to use Amsler Grid to Monitor it For Wet macular degeneration: detection with fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography Tests TREATMENT The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) showed that among people at high risk for developing late-stage, or wet, macular degeneration (such as those who have large amounts of drusen or who have significant vision loss in at least one eye),

taking a dietary supplement of vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin, along with zinc, lowered the risk of macular degeneration progressing to advanced stages by at least 25 percent. The supplements did not appear to provide a benefit for people with minimal macular degeneration or people without evidence of the disease during the course of the study. Following is the nutrient supplementation shown to be beneficial in lowering the risk of macular degeneration progressing to advanced stages: 4Vitamin C – 500 mg 4Vitamin E – 400 IU 4Lutein – 10 mg 4Zeaxanthin – 2 mg 4Zinc oxide – 80 mg Copper (as cupric oxide) – 2 mg (to prevent copper deficiency, which may be associated with taking high amounts of zinc) Another large study in women showed a benefit from taking folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12. Other studies have shown that eating dark leafy greens, and yellow, orange and other colorful fruits and vegetables, rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, may reduce your risk for developing macular degeneration. These vitamins and minerals are recommended in specific daily amounts in addition to a healthy, balanced diet. Some people may not wish to take large doses of antioxidants or zinc because of medical reasons. It is very important to remember that vitamin supplements are not a cure for macular degeneration, nor will they give you back vision that you may have already lost from the disease. However, specific amounts of these supplements do play a key role in helping some people at high risk for developing advanced (wet) AMD to maintain their vision, or slow down the progression of the disease. Talk with your ophthalmologist to find out if you are at risk for developing advanced macular degeneration, and to learn if supplements are recommended for you. Treating the wet form of macular degeneration may involve the use of anti-VEGF treatment, thermal laser treatment or photodynamic therapy (PDT). Treatment of wet macular degeneration generally reduces—but does not eliminate-- the risk of severe vision loss. With vision rehabilitation, people with low vision can learn new strategies to accomplish their daily activities. With new techniques and devices, people with advanced vision loss can regain their confidence and live independently. Contd. in next issue

How to do hair styling during rainy season

T

he most common problem women faces in the rainy season when it is hot and humid is that hair can become bigger, wavy, or flat. These problems results into hair damage. When air containing a large amount of moisture comes in contact with damaged hair cuticles, hair expands, which causes waves. The basic solution is to make sure that your hair is healthy with smooth cuticles using hair treatments. Using leave-in treatments in the morning in addition to at night can help. This will help protect cuticle during the day, making your hair easier to manage. Be sure to try the following tips as well. Steps of doing hair treatment during rainy season After washing: How to dry your hair and choose the

right styling product 4 If your hair tends to expand, use a hair dryer from above to press your hair down. Next, select a styling product such as mouse or oil that contains moisturizers. 4 If your hair becomes wavy, use a hair iron instead of a hair dryer. Same as for reducing volume, moisturizing type styling products are recommended. 4 If your hair tends to flatten out, use a hair dryer to blow dry your hair in the opposite direction of the hair starting from the back to the front. Do not use mousse or wax. Instead, use styling products with a light texture such as sprays or lotions. 4 Regardless of your hair type, be sure to dry your hair completely from the roots. It is important that you finish your hair using cold air in order to release the heat from your hair after drying. 4 Going out: how to keep big hair under control 4 When you notice some problem while you are out, do you simply add some water to fix it? This is not a good idea. It may look better for a while, but once the moisture evaporates, the problem will reappear. When you spot a problem, fix it with a brush. Use a rough brush and brush slowly and lightly to release the moist air from your hair. 4 If your hair problems persist, try a tighter hairstyle. 4 For example, collect your bangs in your hand, give it a twist, and pin it back to create a pompadour. 4 You can also try a hairband to keep the hair around your face down and looking fresh.

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue He cracked a joke that once a boy got married but the couple had an argument the very next day. The girl was very witty. Her husband was not as smart. He used to get riled up soon and pass degrading comments in frustration. They walked to their village Sikh Temple the next morning. After paying obeisance, he asked his wife on the way back to their house what she wanted from god. “I asked god to give us a beautiful house, lots of money and a big business.”, the girl said. “You should have asked for some wisdom too.”, the boy taunted. “He should ask who doesn’t have it.”, The girl retorted. The boy was further badly embarrassed. As they walked ahead, he saw a donkey grazing in a field. “Look, your relative is standing there.”, the boy again tried to degrade his wife. “Look, I am very new. I will learn about all of you by-and-by.”, the girl had the ultimate victory. All burst out laughing and laughed for long. Our Sunny was very jolly. Even he hugged me warmly at the time of my ceremonial marriage farewell and wept bitterly.

I got ready. Meenu had already packed my luggage. I put some other important stuff in it. All of us had breakfast. After performing traditional rituals, my motherin-law and other family members saw us off to Shimla. A driver was driving our car and Sam and I were on the back passenger seats. I shuddered every few minutes because of a strange feeling. Sam, my dream prince sitting beside me, seemed to me a movie hero. Sam put his hand on mine and pressed it. This gave me goose bumps out of excitement, and my whole body shivered. I wished that Sam had embraced me tightly and I had become a part of his chest. I cannot express in words how beautiful my world seemed to me. Sam was staring at me. Then, all of a sudden he brought his face close to mine and wanted to kiss me. I moved away in fear and made him release my hand. My ceremonial-marriage-bracelet set rattled for a moment. I wrinkled my eyebrows with a slight anger and tried to point out that we were not alone, the driver was also there. Then I didn’t let my bracelet set make a noise. Sam had a romantic smile on his face that took my breath away. But I didn’t let it reflect from my face. I wished the driver hadn’t been with us, we both had been alone in the car. How nice it would be if Sam were driving the car! Then I thought what if Sam lost concentration while driving? No! It was ok with the driver. Then Sam took my hand into his

hand. Meanwhile the car radio played the song ji karda bai ji karda (I wish bro I wish). Sam perhaps grew more romantic. Sam put his arm behind my head over my shoulders. I felt like thousands of ants crawling all over my skin. Pretending to be sleepy I put my head on Sam’s shoulder. I don’t know when I really fell asleep. Then, our car stopped at a roadside restaurant and Sam woke me up. “Come out and have something to eat.”, said Sam. Our driver, sitting on a bench outside the restaurant, was waiting for his meal. I redid my make-up and told Sam that I wanted to go to washroom/restroom. Sam pointed out in the direction of ladies’ washroom. It had turned cold. After coming back from washroom, I took out a cardigan from my attaché case and wore it. I also covered myself tightly with a pink shawl. I felt warm. Sitting on a bench, Sam was waiting for me. I was gathering courage to have a proper glance at Sam. I was five feet six inches tall, with a pretty stout physique. I had fair complexion, chubby cheeks, and my eyes like that of a hind. I looked no less than a movie heroine. Sam was continuously gazing at me. He wasn’t giving me a chance even to have a rich look at him. I sat on the bench opposite him. “I had never thought that my wife would be so beautiful.”, Sam whispered bringing his face closer to mine. Contd. in next issue

This unique combination

helps to slow down the release of Glucose into the blood thus keeping the blood sugar level under control

M

illstream DiabeticFriendly Flour: This unique combination of Whole Wheat, Black Chana, Bajra, Soya, Flax helps to slow down the release of Glucose into the blood thus keeping the blood sugar level under control. Why Whole Wheat, Black Chana & Bajra? Fiber delays sugar absorption. Increase intake of fiber in your diet as it delays sugar absorption, helping to control blood glucose levels in a better way. Foods high in fiber include whole grain breads, cereals, brown rice, chickpeas, kidney beans, peas, cabbage, guava, figs, pomegranate, figs etc. Why Soya? Soy lowers blood sugar. Soya has been shown to make cells more responsive to insulin. While eating soy, insulin resistance improved and blood sugar and cholesterol levels are better. Why Flax Meal? Because Flax is high in Omega-3 & Omega-6 acids. The essential fatty acids also affect the ability of the body’s cells to respond to

insulin. The more Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are in the cell membranes of adult diabetics, the more their tissues respond to insulin. Populations that eat a lot of fish containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel, have lower rates of type 2 diabetes compared with those who eat less fish. Things like flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Visiting Australia Fully enjoyed ride of Er Virender Kumar with his family at Australia!

A

ustralia is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. It is famous for backpacking, camping, and driving destination, but no matter what your travel style is, there is something which attracts you towards this place. Australia is filled with incredible natural beauty from places ranging from Uluru to the outback, rainforests to pristine white sand beaches, and of course, the Great Barrier Reef. Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and Opera House are iconic man made wonders, and Melbourne’s café culture will make you feel like you are in Europe. Coupled with world class surfing and it is no wonder people never leave. Main attractions of the place Visit Uluru — Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) is one of the hottest attractions in the country. Make sure you are there for both sunset and sunrise because both are equally as spectacular. It’s a pretty breath-taking sight considering it’s just a big rock! Also make sure to visit the Aboriginal center nearby where you can learn about the local population. Dive the Great Barrier Reef — Find your very own Nemo in the Great Barrier Reef. There’s a ton of marine life and beautiful coral here to explore—this is a must do activity. Even if you don’t dive, you can still take a boat out to the reef and go snorkeling. Try to get on a boat that has a permit to go to dive sites a couple of hours from show so you can avoid the on slaught of other tourist boats and divers that inundate the shallower dive sites closer to shore. Fraser Island— It is the world’s largest sand island is a popular place to do some camping, swim, hike, and avoid dingoes. It’s also extremely popular with the locals because of its rustic beauty is easily accessible from mainland.

Sail the Whitsundays — 3 day, 2 night sailing trips are a popular way to see some of the most beautiful sand islands in the world. Whitehaven beach on a clear day is mesmerizing. Hike the Daintree The world’s oldest rainforest (yes, older than the Amazon) offers hikes that range from easy to challenging, dense jungles, beautiful mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, and cliffs. Make sure you spend a few days hiking around and getting out of touristy Cairns. If you really want to get off the beaten path, head all the way up to Cape Tribulation, and enjoy some real peace and quiet (just watch out for jellyfish when you go swimming. What to explore in Sydney — Australia’s largest city has a range of activities to keep you busy. Climb the Sydney Harbour bridge, surf in Bondi Beach, party in King’s Cross, sail across the harbor, visit the Opera House, and take in world class innovation in Darling Harbor. Sydney is a bustling big city that still has a laid back, beach vibe too it. It’s amazing (though very expensive). Be sure to head up to the laid backed suburb of manly and get out of the Bondi beach tourist scene! Another favorite activity of mine is to spend the day in Domain with food and a good book! Chilling out in Melbourne — Melbourne is much more relaxed than Sydney. There are more cafes and restaurants with fewer clubs, crowds, and better music. This is the place to relax by the river, walk through the gigantic city gardens (all day and every day), and eat amazing

Er. Virender Kumar an Ex Principal Ramgarhia Polytechnic College & other Faculty visited with his family including his wife Rohini, son, Atul and his daughter in law Rimmy at a tour of Sydney. Whole family had a breath taking degree views of the beautiful harbour city. From the golden beaches to the distant Blue Mountains. The family had a 4D cinema experience - the first produced in Australia - where you can uncover a new dimension to Sydney through a whole new perspective. The engaging film experience is taken to the fourth dimension with evocative in-theatre

food. Have a Sunday Session in Perth — Perth is Australia’s west coast capital and is often overlooked by most travelers. It’s expensive to get out there from the east coast so most travelers avoid it but I love it! In fact, it’s probably my favorite city in all of Australia. Perth feels like a large town than a city and is the best place to have a “Sunday Session”. From the beaches, food and beer (be sure to take a day trip to Freemantle), Perth is just awesome. Explore the outback — No trip to Australia is complete without a trip to the outback to see crocodiles, valleys, lakes, and the red desert. Find your own Crocodile Dundee as you explore the Red Center and Western Australia!

effects including wind, bubbles and water! The Observation Deck offers stateof-the-art technology, including high powered binoculars and multilingual touch screen panels that tell every visitor interesting facts about the famous landmarks they are looking at. The family enjoys the Sydney tower buffet which is a self-contemporary restaurant in Sydney. It is an extensive banquet style dining experience with uninterrupted revolving views of the city. Sydney Tower Buffet provides the perfect relaxed dining environment for locals and visitors alike.

The Ningaloo Reef — The Great Barrier Reef gets all the hype, but the Ningaloo Reef on the west coast is a far better reef system. Because it’s less developed and attracts fewer tourists, there are actually more fish and wildlife—you can even swim with whale sharks! Western Australia — The most overlooked area in the country is the West Coast where the country really shines. Here you can escape the crowds of the east coast, explore the outback, the Ningaloo Reef, Coral Bay (one of my favorite spots in the world), Broome, Perth, and the Margaret River. See Tasmania —Tasmania has amazing hikes, beautiful bays (Wineglass bay being the most famous), small towns, and excellent people, just a ferry away from Melbourne. If you have the time, go down under. For most visitors its name is shorthand for an endless summer where lifestyle is an easier place; a country of can-do spirit and easy friendliness. No wonder Australians call theirs the Lucky Country.

Vijay Yamlacarrying legacy of Yamla Jatt By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)

D

oes the song Satguru Nanak Teri Leela Nayari Hai echo in your mind and hit the cockles of your heart? Have you heard Tere nee karara mainu pattya myriad times? I know you already know to what I am referring to. Yeah, yeah… yeah.. Legendary Lal chand Yamla jatt’s name is rambling on the horizons of your mind. And vibrations galore in your heart. He was accredited as an artist who arguably laid the foundation of contemporary folk music in East Punjab. It will not be out of place to mention that he was awarded the Gold Medal By Indian Prime minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1956 . In 1989 he was given a lifetime contribution awardby National Academy of Dance, Drama and Music New Delhi. He was also honored by President of India and then Chief minister Punjab History has the tendency of repeating

itself for noble reasons when viewed on its positive side. And my joy knows no bounds as the legacy of this promoter doyen of Punjabi Folk Music, who popularized the soft strumming Tumbi and nearly killing turban wearing traditional style of undivided East Punjab, called “ Turla” is still alive and raring and roaring to find its place in Folk music to defeat Tukbandi[ below par poetry which has Rhyme but lacks meaning and feel. Yamla Jatt enthralled the audiences for four decades. As I was preparing to have an interface with Vijay Yamla many thoughts were flashing in my mind as I was rummaging the Folk singing by his grand - father Yamla jatt till he breathed his last. While confabulating with Vijay ,27 year young Folk and Sufi Singer now active to find his moorings and currently on his 2nd visit to Surrey BC., I was entirely at ease about his knowledge of Punjabi Virsa, Folk Music and his command on Folk instruments namely, Tumbi, Dholki, Vanjhli, bugdu, flute, algoza (double flute) , harmonium and to cap it all he is a versatile Folk singer, instrument player, composer and lyrist. Though at a tender age of 2 years

and plus, he used to sit in the lap of his grand father practicing riyaaz[music practice, for honing of classical music vocal as well as instrument] and started liking it. With folk music running in his blood and other family members of Yamla Clan, it is normal and natural for him to have a passion for singing. True to his background and expectations, he proved to be a chip of the old block. He has performed successfully well in the last 13 years and has lost count of it Among the various successful compositions/renditions , he is proud of his Vaar on Sahibzada Ajit singhji and latest song released in 2016 “Sohnya “ also by him. He has recently played Folk Instruments ina forthcoming film of Bollywood Director Shyam Benegal. He is vociferously engaged in passing the Punjabi folk music to young generations in India at Punjabi University Patiala as well at Royal academy of Bhangra in surrey BC Canada. He has also performed in Coke Studio Bombay India with

legendary Gurdas Mann by playing folk instruments. He is great student of folk music. Having completed Bhasker degree in Tabla playing he is on the verge of completing MA vocal music. During this period he has won College Ratan Award, University Color and a Gold medal in National Youth festival for playing superbly Folk Instruments. He has also represented india in folk instrument in Delphic Games organized by Republic of South korea. If I do the SWOT analysis of this emerging talent, what I liked the most is he is highly qualified, immensely talented and heavily experienced. Having full command of the subject matter his craft is effortless and he is very cool, calm, composed and collected. With age on his side, his passion being his profession he is bound to serve the community for years to come.

Rakshabandhan:

Celebrating a bond between brothers and sisters ‘Raksha’ means protection and ‘Bandhan’ means binding or bound. As per the Indian mythology, provides many religious reasons to celebrate the day. The festival is mentioned in most of the Indian epics and its origin can be traced back to the mythological times. It’s the day when brothers and sisters reaffirm their affectionate bond. It is typically a Hindu festival but nowadays people from different faiths celebrate it too. On this day, Sisters tie a sacred threads or a colorful special band, rightly called the ‘Rakhi’ on their brothers’ wrist as a mark of affection, sisterly love and sublime sentiments. The brothers in return promise to protect their sisters and offer them gifts. How it is celebrated? There are many ways of celebrating this festival and it is also known with different names. On this day, sister prepares a ‘Thali of Puja’ that includes rice, rakhis, diya and Roli. Sister worship to God and after that ties a ‘Rakhi to her brother and prays for his well-being. In return the brother accepts the love with a promise to protect her sister and gives her a gift. Traditionally, they then share and eat sweets. For those who are not able to meet each other, rakhi cards and e-rakhis and rakhis through mails perform the part of communicating the rakhi messages. Handmade rakhis and self-made rakhi cards are just representation of the personal feelings of the siblings. This festival strengthens the bond of love between the sisters and brother.

Happy couples:

y h t l a e h p i h s n o i t rela r u o y p e e k o t How

By: Prof. Surinder Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writter with 36 Year Exp.)

Contd. From Last Issue Keeping it interesting Being engaged with kids, careers and outside commitments, it can be difficult to stay connected to your partner. Yet there are good reasons to continue to make the effort. To keep things interesting, some couples plan regular date nights or vacations. Experts recommend breaking out of the routine and trying new things — whether that’s going dancing, taking a class together or packing an afternoon picnic. Intimacy is also a critical component of romantic relationship between Happy Couples. When should couples seek outside help? Every relationship has ups and downs, but some factors are more likely than others to create speed breakers in a relationship. Finances and parenting decisions often create recurring conflicts. One sign of a problem is having repeated versions

of the same fight over and over. In such cases, psychologists can help couples improve communication and find healthy ways to move beyond the conflict. Though, the best way to remain in your relationship is to keep other people out of your relationship. In case the relationship, despite all the remedial measures, continues to be unfulfilling/life threatening, then the time is ripe to take a decision to split rather than to suffer from indecision. A bad decision is better than indecision because normally every decision has fifty percent chances to succeed and a very late decision is as bad as indecision. If the situation warrants it, couples should not have to wait until a relationship shows

signs of trouble before working to strengthen relationship. Marital education programs that teach skills such as good communication, effective listening and dealing with conflict have been shown to reduce the risk of final separation. Your partner is a friend in whom you repose unconditionally. Always keep the communication channel open. The worst type of communication is “no communication”.The best type of communication is clarification. Apologize, if you are even partially in the wrong. Apologizing does not necessarily mean that you are wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationship more than your ego. The relationship between a husband and a wife should be one of the closest of friends. True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable. A relationship is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the partner we choose. In the case of Happy Couples, the other half is NEVER above or below the other. Always beside the other. Happy living!!!!

USE VINTAGE STYLING FOR HOME DECOR and l pale colours.

Accessories Every room needs subtle accessories that will help you in designing together. Quirky pieces such as a lamp or even a patterned cushion can all add pops of style to your living space. Choose some retro fabric and craft your own cushion, pillow case or throw for your living room or bedroom. Consider everything even down to the smallest items such as your tea cups and lamp shades. Switching up your lamp shade to a striking geo metric print or adding a new retro cup to your dining room

table set can all contribute to the vintage vibe. Follow these steps and keep continuing the theme throughout

V

intage style is a buzz now days with many trend homes embracing a modern vintage theme. Vintage style includes rustic quirky furniture and old school glamour that encapsulates all that we love. Vintage style may seem costly it’s not all about searching for those one off unique crafted pieces. This style can be carefully selected both small and large with right accessories. To select the right kind of style you have to be imaginative and creative when selecting your vintage pieces this will allow you to create a truly unique design in your home. There are some simple tips on ways to introduce a vintage theme into your home. Statement wallpaper When you creating your vintage style, wallpaper are perfect way to easily create a feature and can create a fun, striking look without being overbearing. Opt for patterned wallpaper such as a shabby 70’s geo metric style or a chic floral print for creation of perfect vibe. Geo prints or even tartan are great if you’re after a retro vibe these wallpaper are often the perfect way to inject some colour into your room also. There’s also the option of going for printed wallpaper such as an animal print instantly adding interest to your wall. Rustic Furniture Rustic style furniture is the ultimate way of doing the vintage styling. Exposed brickwork and natural wooden beams are a desirable look that many of us wish we had unfortunately we’re not all lucky enough to enjoy the luxury of these natural features. Plaques, distressed units or wooden shelving creates a similar effect without having to make any drastic changes. Allow these pieces to truly stand out by adding subtle accessories around them and position them against a natural wash wall. Ensure the room receives lots of light and instantly you will feel a vintage vibe with the illusion of very minimal effort. Mirrors Without mirror no room is complete, so to bring vintage feel in your mirror, special mirror to be used. There are mainly two types of mirror that can be used for creating a charming vintage feel. The first one is elegant vintage style with elaborate frames and lavish ornate detailing. If you feel that this is too overpowering, you can always go down the route of a more subtle vintage feel such as wooden distressed frames

Movie review August 2016

MOVIE REVIEW OF SULTAN STORY: Sultan starts wrestling to win Aarfa’s heart - but what happens when Sultan loses Aarfa? And when, many years and multiple kilos later, he faces a much deadlier fight? REVIEW: So, this is the first movie where Salman Khan takes off his shirt and everyone - including Khan - shudders. Portraying Sultan, who goes from being fit and lean to a gloomy, middle-aged, paunch-burdened man, Khan performs with elan and unhappiness, his acting giving Sultan a nice, rounded punch.

cheery, everyday “loojer” to a determined athlete, an arrogant star, a crushed, depressed, lonely guy. Anushka plays her familiar feisty girl, with a rustic twang and selfcontrol, but fairly little change. The performance which really impresses is Sultan’s friend Govind (Anant), who stands by his buddy through broken heart and crushed rib, charming throughout. Amit Sadh presents an attractive persona while Kumud Mishra, as Anushka’s father and Sultan’s guru, adds noticeable subtlety to the drama.

Plot of the story Rewari lad Sultan (Salman) falls in love with wrestling champion Aarfa (Anushka), who tells him no ganwaar lacking a goal can win her. Sultan determinedly joins Aarfa’s father’s akhaara - the scene where he switches from ‘Barkat bhai’ to ‘uncle’ is fun - and trains so hard, he wins every championship and Aarfa’s heart. But when Sultan wins the Olympics, he loses his head and in his arrogance, loses Aarfa and more. The only way Sultan can win Aarfa and his own identity - back is by competing in entrepreneur Akash Oberoi’s (Amit) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournament. But can the desi wrestler, now overweight and broken-spirited, compete against the world’s toughest judo, karate and capoeira champions? Salman gives a fighting performance, his character graph moving plausibly from a

Dialogues of the movie Sultan’s dialogues also “oopher” a Haryanvi kick while its visuals are fresh and attractive, swaying with Rewari’s eucalyptus trees and gushing canals. The trouble is its length. At nearly three hours of runtime, Sultan gets heavy and repetitive - only so many training sequences can look sharp and by the time Randeep Hooda shows up as MMA coach Fateh Singh, resembling a perennially eating Brad Pitt from Ocean’s Eleven, but overacting as he gets senti about Sultan, you become restive. By cutting 30 minutes of flab - running commentaries, kite-running, taalas, taalis - Sultan could’ve been a leaner, meaner movie. As it is, it’s more a large lassi, not an espresso shot. With Sultan, Salman Khan has given his most human performance. He breaks free from the bondage of Bhai-giri and is ably supported by Anushka Sharma.
