elcome to the 50th Anniversary of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City!

The

Since 1958 more than 8,000 musicians have found a musical home at the Youth Symphony of Kansas City. Today you join with us in celebrating the glorious combination of the energy and talent of youth with the time-honored traditions of classical music. Our community celebrates Youth Symphony musicians as important contributors to the vitality of classical music today and to the endless potential of classical music in the future. Over the years the accomplishments of these 8,000 musicians have been impressive. They have presented so many special concerts, each filled a contagious enthusiasm that warms the hearts of the audience members. They have energetically participated in concerto competitions, retreats and festivals with other Youth Symphony organizations. They have welcomed more than 50 guest artists and guest conductors. They have presented free outreach concerts, weaving classical music into the fabric of our community. They have embraced a wider audience through tours to Italy, Spain, Germany and Austria, Canada and the United States. All of their accomplishments have made the Youth Symphony a vital part of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. The heart and soul of the Youth Symphony is found in a more modest place, the weekly rehearsal. A visit to a Youth Symphony rehearsal is an experience that reaffirms hope for the future. In rehearsal, perhaps more than in concert, the varied personalities of these young musicians are revealed. The room is full of young people who are attentive, respectful, lively and enthusiastic. Guided by their conductor, they enjoy the common effort of working hard, improving, contributing and achieving. Along with the hard work come laughter, goodwill and camaraderie. Each musician is part of the team and knows that his or her contribution is vital to the excellence of the orchestra. In the process these young people demonstrate the best of youth, to be cherished by all of us. Today the Youth Symphony has five orchestras, for musicians from fourth grade through college. The concert you hear today is the result of the orchestra’s hours of rehearsal together, under the leadership of a dedicated conductor who is highly regarded by the music community.

Youth Symphony Celebrates 50 Years As the Musical Home of Young Musicians

You’re Invited to celebrate

the Youth Symphony’s 50th Anniversary! Join us on Saturday, March 27, 2010, 7:30 p.m. at The Gem Theater, 1616 East 18th Street, Kansas City, Missouri Featuring performances by outstanding alumni of the Youth Symphony

5 Celebrating a Bright Future The mission of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City is to educate young musicians through enhanced orchestral experiences and to build the present and future classical music community. Our vision is a present where classical music is alive and vital in today’s youth; and a future where support for classical music is enthusiastic, unwavering and community-wide. Founded in 1958, the Youth Symphony of Kansas City is part of a remarkable network of more than 200 American youth orchestras. Youth orchestras are an integral part of the cultural wellbeing of every major American city, and most mid-sized cities. With limited resources, youth orchestras create educational experiences that encourage young musicians to flourish, not merely survive, in a world that is increasingly cluttered with mediocrity. Like our counterparts, the Youth Symphony of Kansas City contributes a vital component of the cultural life of our city, giving opportunity to dedicated and talented young musicians who are the future of classical music. Some Youth Symphony musicians will become tomorrow’s professional musicians and music educators. In other professions they will carry with them a love of classical music and become avid audience members, advocates for the arts and supporters of cultural institutions. As they contribute in many capacities, Youth Symphony musicians will make our community a more vital place to live, to enjoy and to cherish. We congratulate all Youth Symphony musicians, over 50 years, who have volunteered to study and perform classical music in an orchestra. They worked hard to achieve the honor of being a Youth Symphony musician and all of Kansas City takes pride in their accomplishments.

F

or every Youth Symphony musician, there once was a time when a patient teacher started with the basics: whole notes, half notes and quarter notes might have been the beginning. Those teachers guided us through our first efforts to count, to play a scale and to make a phrase. While now it seems so easy, at one time it was not so. For all those hours of patient instruction, we say thank you to our many teachers. The Youth Symphony is dedicated to supporting music in public education. Each Youth Symphony musician is required to participate

in his or her school orchestra or band, if available, on the instrument that he or she plays in the Youth Symphony. This is no small requirement for students who have many demands on their time and who are achieving in many academic areas. The schools and private teachers who support this year’s students are listed below. Many more have supported our musicians in years past and will do so in the future. Please accept the heartfelt appreciation of the Youth Symphony for your contribution to the study of classical music—from our Board and staff, but above all, from our young musicians who will always remember your dedication and leadership.

You Can Support the Youth Symphony of Kansas City Like most activities in life, the Youth Symphony costs more than you might expect. It takes about $1,000 on an average to cover the expenses of one musician for a year, yet tuition ranges from $260 to $390. It’s through generous contributions that the cost can remain reasonable for most families and scholarships are available for all students. You can designate the purpose of your gift for general program support, scholarships, tours or the endowment. You can make your gift in memory or in honor of a special person in your life. And of course your contribution is tax-deductible. Yes, I would like to support the musicians of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City
