here are so many things that can be said of the Missouri Quarter Horse Association President of 1972, but Don Treadway Jr., Executive Vice President of the American Quarter Horse Association, said it all for everyone in his summation of LaRue Sauers. Don said LaRue was a Mentor and Friend of the American Quarter Horse Association. He also spoke of LaRue as a true and good friend from the beginning when he had become part of the AQHA, and someone that always gave him good advice. Don went on to say that he always appreciated all that LaRue did for the American Quarter Horse Association. Don knew that LaRue in past years had helped save the Missouri Quarter Horse Association from bankruptcy. LaRue served on the youth committee for many years and was always supportive of the youth.

his past summer at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association’s Youth Excellence Seminar in Amarillo, Texas, Missouri native Cait Kerber was elected President of the American Quarter Horse Youth Association. She has been involved in the AQHYA for over seven years and hopes to maintain her involvement through college. When asked about the position, Kerber stated, “I am thrilled to get the opportunity to help grow the association that I grew up in.” She also has high hopes for what her officer and director team can accomplish this year. All of the committees are hard at work on their assignments for the year. After two consecutive years of devoting their efforts to disabled riding programs, the community service committee has decided to shake things up and help clean up trails. “It’s a great cause. I’m glad our community service chair decided to give attention to a cause that could easily get looked over,” Kerber remarked when asked about the change in direction. That is not the only committee making a splash; the recently formed public policy committee has really taken the initiative to make a mark. Their purpose is to make sure everyone, not just equine enthusiasts, are well-informed on the legislative issues facing the horse industry. Cait believes that with numbers at shows dwindling somewhat, it is truly a time to focus on how to improve within the association. As a final remark about what it is like to be president, Kerber said, “There have been so many amazing individuals that have held this position before me. I just hope that I can fill their shoes.”

My Time at the AQHYA World Show

My Time at the AQHYA World Show Chris Kahlenbeck recalls her trip to Oklahoma city written & photography provided by Chris Kahlenbeck

ello, my name is Chris Kahlenbeck, and I have just been to the AQHYA World Show with the MQHYA. This year the show was located in Oklahoma, and my friends and I wanted to participate in Horse bowl and do a demonstration and speech. Well it was going to cost us a lot of money to go, more than our family’s and 4-H club had. So we came to Linda Murphy, the Youth leader of the MQHYA, and asked her if she would allow us on to her team. She was actually overjoyed to have us and offered to look into grant money to help pay our way. We accepted and began planning our stay. Soon we were headed west with a goal to contribute to the MQHYA and grow as people. So now I will tell you about our time at the AQHYA World Show.

While we did enjoy the contests, the best part of the trip was getting to meet new people and make new friends and try new things. When we arrived at our hotel, we dropped off our stuff and got settled in. Then we went to the show grounds to find the MQHYA’s stalls and to look around. When we first found it, unfortunately no one else was around for us to talk to and get the layout of the show. We noticed that the decorations had already been set up and thought that the stalls looked great. Lakota and her mom helped out and were glad to take part in the decorating. Well, we also had a demonstration to do that day so we headed back to the room we would do the demonstration in. Kristy and I did well in this contest. We finished in sixth place. MQHA 2010

a great public speaker. The next day Spencer, Lakota, Kristy, and I were in the Horse bowl competition. We enjoyed this contest the most because we were all involved. We also placed sixth. Horse Bowl taught us a lot more about the quarter horse because so many of the questions are about quarter horses. MQHYA was so supportive of us throughout everything. Brock Murphy came over and watched us compete and was the leader for our cheering section. On the final day we were in the horse judging contest. We all agreed this was the hardest by far. It took most of the day for us to get done judging. Then we had to spend another 3 hours waiting to give our reasons on four classes. It was a long day, but we got to see some really nice horses and I learned a lot about judging. We got a kick out of looking at all of the states’ scrapbooks and decorated jeans and boots during the week, too. Some were really creative! While we did enjoy the contests, the best part of the trip was getting to meet new people and make new friends and try new things. Lakota tried to teach me how to rope, but I have to admit that I wasn’t very successful. I think I’ll leave the roping to her! We just had tons of fun hanging out with everyone while we were there. I liked seeing all of the horses and watching different classes, too. We walked through the barns a lot, and I liked looking at all of the stall decorations. We thought Missouri’s decorations were the best. We went to the dance that AQHYA had for all the youth and had lots of fun as well. I can’t wait to see what next year brings. I really want to thank Linda Murphy and MQHYA for all of their support and for including us in everything. Our trip to the AQHYA world show was an awesome experience and one that I hope we get to repeat in 2010!

{

We continued looking around and then went home because it was getting late. Our parents told us we would be coming back later for the parade of states. When we came back, the Missouri aisle was packed with people. That is when we met Darrin Kraft, the president of the MQHYA, and he made us feel right at home. Linda put us in charge of going in first for Missouri with the flag. We ran in fists raised, shouting with excitement. We laid the flag down and waited for the rest of Missouri’s group to pass over it, and then we picked it up and followed the group to where we would wait for the states behind us to enter. The parade of states was a blast, and it was really neat to have such a big part in it! The next day, Kristy and I were in a speech contest, and we waited for an hour at the building before it was our turns. We also did well in this contest. We got 12th and 13th out of around 20 kids. The speeches and demonstrations were fun to watch, and I now have a really good idea of what it takes to be

eam Missouri reached for the stars during the 2009 year. We launched off at the annual Convention in Springfield, Missouri, where the youth bonded with each other over pizza and other activities. During the convention, members elected the new MQHYA Officers and Directors. The Officers were as follows: Darrin Kraft, President; Mary Bluhm, 1st Vice President; Nick Murphy, 2nd Vice President; Liz Creech, Secretary; Christina Kreisch, Treasurer; and Whitney Unkefer, Reporter. The Directors at Large this year are: Cait Kerber, Samantha Mitchell, Stacie Mitchell, and Denim Smith. Our Regional Directors are: Hillary Whitacre, Region 1; Cody Shepherd, Region 2; Kelly Love, Region 3; Matt Ingebritson, Region 4; Dakota Watkins, Region 5; and Brock Murphy, Region 6. These youth, along with Linda Murphy as our Commander of Mission Control, helped guide our rocket to great successes along the way to our final destinations. The Convention came to a close with the Super Bowl Lottery, the Silent Auction, and the DVD Sales, which were the first of our many fundraisers for the year. One of the Missions our team completed was the March to the Arch horseshow. During this show, youth members participated in Tips for a Cure while the auction commenced. Later in March and

in early April, our astronauts explored the area known as Columbia. Here, we began selling tickets for the Boystown Stall Raffle. The youth also competed in the heated Egg and Spoon competition. In the end, it came down to only two: Samantha Mitchell on her pleasure horse and Shayla Mitchell on her Reiner. Samantha walked away with the prize. Later in April, we traveled to Carthage where groups competed against each other in the Team Tournament. The trio of Jamie Miner, Whitney Unkefer, and Deb Uehling won the contest. Next, the spaceship journeyed to the world of Sedalia. Competitors’ dogs experienced the joys of space as they raced to the finish line during the Dog Races at the Maple Leaf horseshow. Both Liz Creech’s dog and Whitney Unkefer’s dog won their races. At Maple Leaf, we also had a Bake Sale, which was a tasty fundraiser. The end of May saw the exploration of Lake St. Louis, where we competed in the Boystown horseshow. As a fundraiser, MQHYA auctioned off youth members as slaves for the duration of the show. Throughout the season, we also had a Trainer Auction. Thank you to all the trainers who participated in this! During June, youth members had the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with fellow space travelers from other states during the YES Conference. Cait Kerber, Darrin Kraft, Christina Kreisch, Samantha Mitchell, Shayla Mitchell, Nick Murphy, and Cody Shepherd voyaged to Amarillo, Texas to participate in this seminar. Cait Kerber, Darrin Kraft, Christina Kreisch, and Nick Murphy were Missouri’s delegates. During the Conference, the youth participated in leadership and team-building activities, such as the balloon game. The delegates also voted on the new Officers and Directors of the AQHYA. Cait Kerber became the President of the AQHYA and Nick Murphy became a Region 3 Director. This event was a lot of fun, and we hope that more members can make the journey with us next year. One of the final destinations of the Missouri Space Shuttle was the AQHYA World Championship Show in August. A team of 31 astronauts trekked down to Oklahoma City to compete in the World Show, where the theme was “Rock Your World.” Youth qualifying for and attending the World Show were as follows: Yearling Mares—Darrin Kraft; 2-Year-Old Mares—Darrin Kraft; 3-Year-Old Mares—Darrin Kraft; Performance Mares— Mackenzie Fugitt; Yearling Geldings— Darrin Kraft; 2-Year-Old Geldings—Darrin Kraft; Performance Geldings—Mary Bluhm and Hillary Whitacre; Showmanship—Casey Bazoian, Mary Bluhm, Mackenzie Fugitt, Whitney Unkefer, and Hillary Whitacre; Cutting—Samantha White; Breakaway Roping—Lakota Pappan and Denim Smith; Heeling—Denim Smith; Barrel Racing—Mackenzie Bowen, Madison Bowen, and Denim Smith; Poles—Mackenzie Bowen, Madison Bowen, and Denim Smith; Stake Race—Mackenzie Bowen, Madison Bowen, and Denim Smith; Reining—Mackenzie Fugitt, Matt Ingebritson, Samantha Mitchell, Shayla Mitchell, and Nick Murphy; Western Riding—Mary Bluhm, Mackenzie Fugitt, Hillary Whitacre, and Emily Yancey; Trail—Mary Bluhm, Danielle Dickerson, Mackenzie Fugitt, Hillary Whitacre, and Emily Yancey; Western Horsemanship—Mary Bluhm, Mackenzie

Missouri set up our control base with an extraterrestrial and celestial theme. Astronauts adorning NASA space suits greeted the competitors with thumbs ups and salutes to the Team Missouri space shuttle. Some astronauts also placed the Missouri Flag onto Oklahoma City. Centered in the display was the painted backdrop of Missouri’s rocket landing in Oklahoma City. Rocks with an added sparkle drew the attention of passers by, as did the 3D spaceship and globe. Youth members diligently worked to put this enormous display together, and the efforts of all helpers paid off! On Monday, youth members from all the states marched in the Parade of Teams. Missouri brought out a map of Oklahoma City and landed the spaceship on it. This was followed by a few members wearing the astronaut suits and staking the Missouri Flag onto Oklahoma City, all while walking to the music of Star Wars and carrying in meteors. All of the team members had a great time participating in the parade and helping with the set-up.

down to Oklahoma City to compete in the World Show, where the theme was “Rock Your World.”

MQHA 2010

Team Missouri also found great success with our arrival to the world of Oklahoma. Missouri received 2nd place for the Team Spirit Award, as well as 4th place in the Scrapbook Contest, where Mary Bluhm and Whitney Unkefer created the scrapbook. Team members also received the following awards: Denim Smith and Cody Shepherd— 13th Ranch Sorting; Samantha White—15th Cutting; Madison Bowen—Reserve World Champion Stake Race; Mackenzie Bowen—12th Barrels, 14th Stake Race, and 5th Poles; Mackenzie Fugitt—14th Performance Halter Mares; Mary Bluhm—15th Performance Halter Geldings; Darrin Kraft—10th Yearling Mares, World Champion Yearling Geldings, 5th 2 Year Old Mares, and 8th 3 Year Old Mares. The Horse Bowl Team placed sixth and consisted of Kristy Cox, Spencer Crumbaugh, Chris Kahlenbeck, and Lakota Pappan. Kristy Cox and Chris Kahlenbeck placed sixth in the Team Demonstration. The following members also placed in the Speech Contest: Lauren Crudup, 6th; Chris Kahlenbeck, 12th; and Kristy Cox, 13th. Missouri team members really rocked their world!

2009 MQHYA Year-In-Review

The final stop of the Missouri rocket was the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. Eight youths represented Missouri in the NYATT: Showmanship— Mary Bluhm and Hillary Whitacre; Horsemanship—Mackenzie Fugitt and Hillary Whitacre; Western Pleasure—Christina Kreisch and Nick Murphy; Hunter Under Saddle—Lydia Whetstine; Reining—Mackenzie Fugitt and Mathew Ingebritson; and Barrels—Denim Smith. Mackenzie Fugitt received sixth place in the NYATT Reining, as well as tenth place in the NYATT Horsemanship. Christina Kreisch was a finalist in the NYATT Western Pleasure. After the Team Tournament was over, Missouri walked down the arena in style with our black embroidered jackets. The team had a fun time together and did a great job.

From blasting off with the Convention to landing in Oklahoma City with the World Show and Columbus with the Congress, all the youth built stronger bonds with one another and pursued goals. {

Team members also gave back to the community through

26 the Therapeutic horseshow. The youth who attended were: }

Danielle Dickerson, Elizabeth Jackson, and Hillary Whitacre. The special needs kids enjoyed the time the youth spent with them, as well as the show environment, while the sun shined down as Veda and Brooke Gardner judged the kids on this beautiful day. Everyone did a great job and the show brought happiness to many people. The 2009 year for the MQHYA brought a great sense of accomplishment for all the youth. From blasting off with the Convention to landing in Oklahoma City with the World Show and Columbus with the Congress, all the youth built stronger bonds with one another and pursued goals. The youth especially worked hard in fundraising, and their efforts paid off. However, the fundraising could not have been a success without the help of all the people who generously donated to the MQHYA, and we thank you.

ur show of 2009 was again a successful show. It’s important now that you mark your calendars for 2010. Our show will again be held at the National Equestrian Center, Lake Saint Louis with a lot of new changes that will lend to a successful show sponsored by The Missouri Quarter Horse Association. The 2010 show dates will be May 13-16, so again, mark your calendar. The show manager, Tom Downing, has several new ideals and plans for the enhancement of the show. The show hotels with a show rate are: Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, phone 636-300-4844 and Staybridge Suites O’Fallon, phone 636-300-0999. Both hotels are approximately six miles from show grounds.

As the day ended and I drove off, I had tears streaming down my face

Boystown Gateway Classic

It’s so important that we always remember the mission of this show. It’s a benefit show for the Boys and Girls Town with the main campus located at St. James, Missouri. This is a facility that has worked to help children since 1949.

for the compassion I felt for each child and the empathy of each staff member. Many of you many not know the history and background of Boys & Girls Town. I would encourage you to go online to www. bgtm.org/aboutus/history.htm. The better we understand what our cause and mission is about, the easier it is to tell others why this show is so important. Lets face it, how many can turn down the opportunity to help a child. This show is one of the many ways that the children of Boys & Girls Town, with the main Campus located at St. James, Missouri have an opportunity to learn how to develop self esteem, as they plan and develop future goals for their lives.

Boystown Gateway Classic

I’ll never forget the heart warming experience I had many years ago. At one time Homer and I owned and published our state equine publication. At that time only Boys were a part of the campus. I felt it was so important for others to know and understand what Boys Town of Missouri at St. James was comprised of. I spent an entire day on campus, sitting in classrooms, sitting at the lunch table with the boys, and watching during recreation time. I enjoyed spending one on one time with them, learning more about them. I visited in the housing facilities, talking with the house parents and listening to what the boys were taught regarding daily housing skills. A special area is provided for children that need additional assistance in all phases of daily life. The Directors of the campus were Dick and Jane Dunn, who were always available for staff and residents. It needs to be noted that all of the instructors had to have at least a Masters Degree and additional training to teach on campus. In those days they had a large Equine Program and part of this program included a mandatory week long trail ride that ended in St. Louis down at the river front. The mission of the ride was to teach a child that they can complete the goal that they have started and helped to develop self esteem. As the day ended and I drove off, I had tears streaming down my face for the compassion I felt for each child and the empathy of each staff member. Some of the children had pressed their faces against the classroom windows waving good-bye to me.

The trail ride that I mentioned had to have a lot of volunteers along the trail and at trail’s end. For over 17 years, men that worked for Homer at his construction company would shine up their trucks, hook up trailers, and donate an entire Sunday to haul all of the wagons and equipment back to Boystown. Our company mechanic would drive his big tow truck in the truck possession in case of a break down. Everyone was happy to do it and we made it a fun day. Homer and I, along with Bill and Betty Crouch, have worked through the years at the Boystown horse show. We share the same heartfelt empathy and compassion, and gratitude for our small part that we hopefully have contributed. Our Missouri Quarter Horse Association has been a huge part in the lives of many children of Boys and Girls Town of St. James and its expanding campus. Be a part of that special need and feel the rewards of commitment.
