QHYA; Five letters that define a youth organization that promotes leadership, and scholarship through horsemanship. As a member of MQHYA, a child can expect to be exposed to numerous opportunities in which they can excel. This can occur in or out of the show arena. MQHYA sponsors two competitive horsemanship teams, the NYATT which is held at the Congress and the Youth World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. Dedication and hard work are required to become a member of either team. Through a series of qualifying shows, the teams are chosen based on their individual placing during this time frame. Members of MQHYA may chose to compete in other ways. There are fine arts competitions, an opportunity to be on a judging team or horse bowel team. Several youth have chosen to become leaders within AQHYA. Missouri has
had several members serve as regional directors. In 2005, Rachel Duff from Smithville Missouri was the AQHYA President. Whitney Unkefer and Cait Kerber are currently severing on the AQHYA board. MQHYA members manage their own association. They elect their own officers and directors. They finance their numerous events through creative fundraising. They offer help to others interested in equestrian activities with clinics and seminars. They have created and funded their own scholarship. Regardless of the level of competition, members of MQHYA win or loose with grace and poise. They have learned how to cooperate and compromise in order to obtain both individual and group goals. Most importantly, they have learned that hard work and dedication results in huge rewards that are often intangible.

very two years, a horse show happens and only the best of the best are invited to compete. This year MQHYA member, Cara Walker was selected to represent the United States at this event. The AQHYA World Cup is an international competition bringing together the best equestrians from around the globe. The 2008 World Cup was held in London, Ontario, Canada. Cara was one of only five youth selected from the United States to attend. She was chosen from literally hundreds of applications for this honor. She competed in the “all around events and was the High Point rider overall for the whole competition and also won the titles of High Point
Horsemanship rider and Reserve High Point Hunter Under Saddle rider. Team USA is coached by Professional Horsewoman, Nancy Cahill of Madisonville, Texas and managed by Dawn Forest of Bryan, Texas. Cara is a past MQHYA President and Vice President, as well as a past AQHYA Regional Director. She is the first MQHYA member to be chosen for this prestigious team. Cara is the epitome of hard work and dedication, proving that MQHYA membership has its rewards. But for Cara, the best part of this experience was the many friendships worldwide she has made and the bonds made between the Team USA members.

And he doesn’t care how much money you have, he likes to help everyone. But he’s brutally honest, if you did a poor job showing or your goals are unrealistic, he’ll tell you. He won’t do things just to make money.”

The Big C So life went on, and Landon Show Horses grew and thrived. But then life took a big detour. Doug says he never had a sign of cancer until he was driving to the 2003 Iowa Quarter Horse Futurities. “I started having back pain, and when I got to the show grounds, I asked my friend Jason Smith to take over unloading the horses so I could go to the hospital,” recalls Doug. “Jason had to show for me, too, because I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and they did the surgery right there in Iowa. Because of the size of the tumors, they said I’d had it for several years.” Doug was sent home to recover from the surgery and to schedule chemotherapy. But his doctor underestimated Doug’s commitment to his clients. “I missed the Congress that year because I was still recovering from surgery. But I convinced my doctor to wait until after the World to start chemo, so I could show horses for my clients. If I’d had it for three years, what was a couple more weeks? Plus, I wanted to fulfill their showing goals for the year,” he says. The doc relented, and Doug’s chemotherapy was scheduled for 7 a.m. the morning after he got home from the World.

When the Going Gets Tough Lana remembers how bad the cancer treatment was. “Doug never complained when he was going through chemo, even though he had a lot of complications. He had really bad seizures and a blood clot, and he lost 54 pounds in eight weeks. It kicked him pretty hard,” she says. Doug echoes Lana’s view. “Some chemo isn’t bad, but I had a horrible experience. I had 14 weeks of chemo, and it got so bad I had to take a break for a couple weeks. My body shut down, stopped producing red blood cells,” he says. “My mom would ask me ‘how do you feel?’ You can’t even explain how you feel. You’re laying in that bed all day long, not wanting to eat or drink or even get up. I had to suck on sponges for water.”

Getting By With A Little Help From Your Friends Doug is now cancer-free. How did he get through it? “Lana was a big, big help. Keeping the ranch running, driving back and forth to the hospitals, and working at her job, too,” he says. “Lana and her mom, plus another girl, took over all the care, feeding, and working of the horses while I was going through chemo. And my clients were great, they all stayed with me.” Jason and Julie Smith, of Jason Smith Show Horses, were also part of the recovery process. The Smiths got to know Doug through showing horses; when Lana came along, she became part of the clan. Friendly before Doug’s illness, their relationship deepened during his treatment and recovery. “I was there when he got his cancer diagnosis,” says Jason. “That’s when our relationship starting getting stronger; we were close then but not as close as we are now. We talk pretty much every day now, whether it’s horse business, or WCHA (World Conformation Horse Association), or just shooting the bull.” The group also does non-horse activities. “We vacation together in the summer, usually at the lake for a week,” says Julie. “We try to get together in the winter months, too, doing things that are off the ‘horse show’ beaten path. As our kids, Cooper and Shyanne, have grown older, we’ve learned there’s more to life than just horses.” Their friendship carries through to the show circuit. Julie continues, “We always make sure we’re stalled together, we help get each others’ horses ready. We may show against each other in the same arena, but we’re friends before and after.”
“Mark and his partner, David Pardue, were behind us 100 percent. They got to work finding us a date right away.” Mark Harrell agrees. “When Doug approached us with the idea, everyone was on board from the beginning. We get lots of volunteers for this event, and we have a waiting list of judges who want to donate their services,” he says. “Plus, it’s become David’s favorite show to work on. It’s amazing the number of hours he dedicates to this show, especially on the hospitality end, the party planning and the decorating, which he loves.” The show’s name, March to the Arch, reflects both the St. Louis location and the show’s scheduled date on the second weekend of March. First held in 2006, the show has raised $115,000 for cancer research in the past three years. The first year brought 2,500 entries; 2008 entries doubled to over 5,000. But getting to the essence of the show means getting beyond the numbers.
MQHA
2009
} Paying It Forward As difficult as the cancer treatment and recovery was, it seems that Doug’s care for others shone through his discomfort. “If I can do something to ease someone else’s pain, that’s the most important thing for me. I guess it was the terrible struggle I went through. That’s what drives me forward,” he says. So it’s hardly surprising that Doug found a way to benefit others. He had an idea, to hold an AQHA horse show and raise money for cancer research. “I asked some people about it, then approached Mark Harrell Horse Shows with the idea. We’d been to their shows, Mark’s very successful and does a good show,” says Doug.
You Gotta Have Heart…and Soul “My kids live for it,” says Julie. “They get a certain number of days off from school for extracurricular activities, and they’re already worried about saving days and having enough for Doug’s show.” As organizer, Mark is in a prime position to gauge response to the show. “Even with the economy, people open up their wallets and their hearts to help. And you can’t believe the people this show has touched,” he says. “People come up to me and David all the time and say what it’s meant to them, that they’re a cancer survivor or they had a loved one die from it.” Lana agrees. “Friday night, when we have the cancer survivor classes and the fundraiser auction, the whole atmosphere is different. You put everything away for a while, money problems, competition, etc., and focus on having a good time,” she says. She sums up the essence of Friday evening at March to the Arch. “Everyone gets to see the people that have battled cancer and beaten it. It’s a way to honor and recognize their struggle, and their triumph. Our second year halter class winner, Betty Jo Boxell, burst into tears when she won. She was just thrilled.” Just Good Clean Fun Doug and Lana’s priority for the show is for everyone to feel welcome and enjoy themselves. “It’s a great qualifying
The Spirit of St. Louis
show and the competition’s good, but it’s also a total family affair,” says Lana. “We provide breakfast and dinner each day. We have the auction with donated items, everything from golf carts to handmade jewelry to baseball tickets. The Friday night survivor classes are amazing. And we have unbelievable volunteers.” Doug adds, “Without the volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to donate as much as we do. From AQHA judges to ring stewards to everyone that’s behind the scenes, we couldn’t pull off this show without them.” And what about the cowboys in drag? “We had the idea to have a “ladies” western pleasure class, with guys dressing as the ladies, and hold it as a fundraiser. The first year we got $10,000 from the class, which was half of what we raised,” says Mark. It’s brought more than just donations. “Tracy Willis, who won the class the first two years, says he’s gotten more notoriety from that class than from any other show he’s ever been in.” Jason Smith won the “ladies” title this year, and plans are already underway for his 2009 appearance. “Jason gets help from the Showtime girls (Penny and Kay, who own Showtime Show Clothing) and his mother (Sarah Smith, of Logan Western Supply). They’re already plotting what horse he’ll ride and what he’ll wear,” says Julie.
{
What’s Next? For Lana and Doug, and Landon Show Horses, life revolves around friends and family, horses, work and service, 21 and enjoying life. So what’s next on the wish list? “I’ve been kicking around the idea of starting a horseman’s fund, maybe through AQHA, to help people out if they have a cancer diagnosis. Lots of horse people don’t have medical insurance,” says Doug. “I’d also like to keep growing the amount of money to fund cancer research, even though we plan to keep the show in St. Louis.” And for Doug – anything he’d like for himself? “I’d like to get a World champion. I’ve had World champions for my clients, but not yet for myself.” It seems a small thing to ask, for someone who gives so much to others.

The youth members have organized and managed a horse show since 2006 for individuals with special needs. With the help of some adults, the youth have scheduled events, recycled trophies, and made trail patterns for the day. Once the horse show starts, the members serve as announcers, ring stewards, pass out ribbons, provide lunch, and clean up afterwards. In 2008, there were about 20 individuals with special needs who participated in equitation, trail, barrels, and poles. These riders came from the Northland Therapeutic Riding Center located near Kearney and Dream Catchers from Excelsior Springs, MO. The show was held at the Plattsburg Saddle Club Arena. The MQHYA members would like to thank the saddle club for the use of the arena and their support. Judges for the day were Renee Dudley and Denny Deischer, Missouri Quarter Horse Association members.

The morning started off with a degree of uncertainty due to rain the night before. Fortunately, a grassy area was available for holding the classes. Each rider received a number, the National Anthem was played, and the show began. With the help of numerous volunteers for the riders, the equitation and trail classes took place prior to lunch. the judges placed the independent riders. Independent riders ride on their own without volunteers. The MQHYA members and adults served lunch to all participants, families, and volunteers. After lunch the fun classes of barrels and poles got underway. Each rider again received a ribbon for participating. At the end of the day, everyone gathered in the shade and trophies were given to the riders. Judges gave specific reasons to the riders as they received their trophies. It was a great day for the riders, volunteers, and the MQHYA members who managed the show! The American Quarter Horse Foundation encourages all AQHYA members to volunteer at therapeutic riding centers. These programs are designed to aid individuals with cognitive, physical and/or emotional disability. Equine assigned programs can improve muscle tone, balance, coordination, posture and motor development, as well as emotional well being. The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association is a non-profit organization that fosters safe, professional, ethical and therapeutic equine activities. More than 650 NARHA programs centers serve some 30,000 individuals with special needs each year. Check out narha.org for a therapeutic riding center near you, or call (800) 369-RIDE for more information on how you can help individuals with special needs have the rides of their lives. The youth are looking for any donations to offset the expenses of the horse show. They especially need trophies that can be recycled for the event. If you would like to help, contact a MQHYA member. The horse show has been scheduled for June 27, 2009.
