MANHATTAN, KANSAS Good vibes reverberate around the Flint Hills region of Kansas. Manhattan is the gateway city to the prairie, where locals have come to appreciate this place as “Manhappiness.” Visitors travel 90 miles west from Kansas City or north from Wichita to experience college town charms, delicious dining and sophisticated shopping along Poyntz Avenue. Manhattan is home to Kansas State University, a Big 12 Conference school touted by the Princeton Review for great student life. Aggieville borders the Kansas State University campus and pulses with college-town culture, nightlife, coffee shops and specialty stores. In 2018, Livability selected Manhattan as one of the best places to live. We’re also a great place to visit. Experience what Manhappiness is all about!

WHO IS JOHNNY KAW? In the Midwest’s once vast prairielands, the legend of folk hero Johnny Kaw boasts that the burly Kansas wheat farmer bottled gallons of sunshine and spread sunflower seedlings around the state of Kansas. So sprung from this tall tale Kansas’ nickname the Sunflower State. The story goes that Johnny has whipped all challengers, even that Minnesota lumberjack Paul Bunyan. A 25-foot tall statue of Johnny Kaw towers above Manhattan’s City Park keeping the legend alive. Johnny promises visitors an Instagram-worthy moment telling their own tales about visiting Manhattan.

WELCOME TO 2

In 45-acre City Park stands a replica of a historic log cabin from 1855, the year Manhattan was founded. Pioneers brought prefabricated homes aboard steamboat Hartford migrating west to Kansas. This steamboat ferrying new citizens with backing from New York financiers ran aground at a Kansas River sandbar near a settlers’ campground. From this beginning grew the prairie town renamed Manhattan to honor land investors funding the pioneers’ journey. Around 1977, Manhattan became known as “The Little Apple®” by mayoral decree.

Visitors find the last four percent of North America’s natural tallgrass prairie around Manhattan. Surrounded by some of the nation’s most fertile soil and abundant grasslands, Manhattan restaurants have practiced and perfected farm-to-table dining and grain-to-glass brewing. Grains for beer production at Little Apple Brewing Co. and Tallgrass Brewing Co. are grown from Kansas soil, as are Flint Hills grapes harvested by Liquid Art Winery vineyards.

Open prairie vistas around Manhattan have inspired Hollywood Westerns. Spring through autumn, visitors see real cowboys gallop across sprawling ranchlands rounding up cattle and horses on these grassy plains. Getaways at the Flint Hills region’s homesteads give visitors an authentic ranch life experience.

Bread is big business in Manhattan centered in the nation’s Heartland. A year’s worth of Kansas wheat would pack a train that stretches nearly from the Rockies to the Atlantic. That’s 1,700 miles of grain bushels! King Arthur Flour and Kansas Wheat Commission sponsor the biennial National Festival of Breads at Manhattan Conference Center. At this nationwide contest, eight American home-baker finalists compete for the championship during a festive weekend.

The Princeton Review ranks Kansas State University No. 1 nationally for a “town-gown” relationship, reflecting the city’s great support of the campus community. The university was awarded the No. 2 spot for best athletic facilities and No. 3 for best quality campus life. ESPN praises the Wabash Cannonball pregame tradition and placed Wildcat football fans atop the Big 12 Conference for happiest fans. That’s Manhappiness!

SOME OF OUR BEST BITES. Downtown Manhattan’s dining scene is anchored by long-time fine-dining establishment Harry’s restaurant in the lobby of the elegant, 1920s Wareham Hotel. The must try appetizer is bruschetta, followed by a strong selection of signature dishes that range from lobster tail to tenderloin tips. Harry’s Chef Cadell Bynum has been honored four times by Best Chefs of America. For a more casual scene, beer lovers enjoy craft brews and good pub grub at our 10-barrel brewpub Tallgrass Tap House. This locally-owned, craft beer hot spot features Tallgrass signature suds including Buffalo Sweat, Pub Ale and 8-Bit best sipped on the seasonal rooftop deck. Small-plate selections lead diners to Bourbon & Baker serving Southern flair and 75 types of bourbon, including Kentucky’s Best, in a comfy, exposed-brick-wall space. In K-State neighborhood Aggieville, students and visitors line up for tasty treats at Varsity Donuts. Top sellers are Oreos-and-cream-topped Fat Tire and purple-icing-glazed K-Stater. Across from campus, dig into the kicky Tex-Mex platters at Coco Bolos. Retro joint Rock-A-Belly Deli is another local favorite for flavorful sandwiches like the roast beef, ham and cheddarcheese-stacked Western. See pages 33-37 for restaurant guide.

History

Ceremonial reenactments are an important Fort Riley tradition during Change of Command observances on the active military post.

DEVOTED ABOLITIONISTS helped settle Manhattan and endorsed the 19th century, free-state movement. These efforts came on the heels of 1850s legislation that allowed states sovereignty on the issue of slavery. Manhattan citizens committed to build their community upon the core principles of education and freedom. For these beliefs citizens fought skirmishes known collectively as Bleeding Kansas. Out-of-state, pro-slavery fighters attempted to sway the slavery issue at ballot boxes. But abolitionists eventually helped carry Kansas into statehood as a free state in 1861. Members of the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church in nearby Wabaunsee played a prominent role in this struggle. Minister Henry Ward Beecher pledged 25 rifles to 63 westward colonists for armed protection. Just east of the Wabaunsee church, Beecher Colony leader Captain William Mitchell’s former home has been recognized by the National Park Service as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

GOODNOW HOUSE STATE HISTORICAL SITE Isaac and Ellen Goodnow were abolitionists who founded Manhattan in 1855 on the common principles of freedom and education. Their home was built in 1861 and contains Victorian-era furniture. Located next to Riley County Historical Museum. 2309 Claflin Road 785-565-6490 Kshs.org

FORT RILEY Fort Riley opened in 1853 as a frontier Army installation to protect pioneers traveling on wagon trails across the Flint Hills.
