The Scenery
The most unique aspect of the sport for novice SUPer Noah Hoelscher is the view. “By standing up, you can see more stuff,” says Hoelscher. The body being in an upright position also requires more physical exertion. “It’s similar to kayaking, but you’re getting a more total body workout,” says Hoelscher. “You’re training your body for movement instead of just training muscles. The core and stability work you’re getting from standup paddling transfers to a lot of other sports.” Thompson compares the sport to cross-country skiing—an intense workout that allows considerable freedom in choosing route, intensity and conditions in the outdoors. “But it isn’t just a workout. Paddleboarding allows you to be immersed in nature, with a wide, expansive view,” says Thompson. “The whole idea of standing up allows you to look all around you.” The abundant amount of lakes and rivers in and within just a short drive provide standup paddleboarders plenty of options. For a change of pace, and scenery, Hoelscher recommends southern Missouri or northern Arkansas. Closer to home, LaSorsa prefers the peaceful aquatic paths of the Wakarusa River. “I love to get away from boats whether I’m on a kayak or standup paddleboard,” says LaSorsa. “It’s just nice to get into places where you can only go without a motorized vehicle.”
