SCA Called to Serve

SCA was honored to serve two Ukrainian families who found themselves unable to return to their home country when Russia invaded Ukraine. These families serve on the international staff for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and were attending a conference in San Antonio when the war broke out. An SCA father who is the field director for FCA contacted International Program Director Kathy Tharp to see what SCA might be able to do for the school-age children in the group of 11 families. God had already been orchestrating the care for

these children. Last year, the Hramma family, who are Ukrainian American, came to be a part of the SCA family. This year, their son Tymofiy was in Miss Ray’s second grade class. When the war broke out, Tymofiy asked his class to pray for his family in Ukraine. The class began to pray, unaware that God was preparing their hearts for a very special job. When discussing how SCA could help the two families and where the two children might be placed, it became evident that Miss Ray’s class was the perfect place because Tymofiy could help translate (since he speaks Russian, Ukrainian, Maldovian, and English) and because of Miss Ray’s years of experience and heart for international ministry. SCA aide Abigail Woodall had already been tutoring some Ukrainian children in ESL and was moved to Miss Ray’s class to support the children

in the afternoon when they came. Miss Ray chose Lilly Roe as a buddy for Emma Aleksandrov and Benny Loux to be a buddy to Daniel. She prepared the class for these new students and helped them understand what God was doing and how He had chosen their class to pray and now welcome and love these new friends from Ukraine. The annual elementary Flag Parade was canceled twice because of weather but

was perfectly timed so the Ukrainian flag could be added. Tymofiy, Emma, and Daniel represented Ukraine and the two Ukrainian families were present, honored, and prayed over. Their story was shared of God’s faithfulness and provision for these families and Miss Ray’s class was recognized for being the hands and feet of Jesus.

STEWARDS Carry Out Judicial Process through Mock Trials

Student Environment of Arduous Study (STEWARDS) third through sixth grade students completed their judicial process unit by leading mock trials at the Historic Cass County Courthouse in Harrisonville. Students spent six weeks preparing their trial scripts to conduct a case based on a familiar fairy tale with an antagonist as the defendant. STEWARDS students recently completed their six-week judicial process unit by leading mock trials at the Historic Cass County Courthouse in Harrisonville. Students participated in roles such as prosecution or defense attorneys, bailiffs, court reporters, clerks, witnesses, and jurors. Four mock trials were held at the Cass County Courthouse, including “People vs. Mr. Wolf” from the Three Little Pigs, “People vs. Mr. Jack” from Jack and the Beanstalk, “People vs. Mr. Wolf” from Little Red Riding Hood, and “People vs. Mrs. Cassandra Queen” from Snow White. Students had the opportunity to try their case, serve on a jury, or observe in the courtroom audience. Judicial Representatives included Private Lawyer and Judge Shawn Blair who acted as judge and lead the courtroom, Private Lawyer Jodi Butler acted as Juror Facilitator as they deliberated verdicts, and Cass County Prosecutor Ben Butler who provided Trial Analysis and discussion with students in the courtroom as the jury deliberated. “This experience provided students with an opportunity to better understand the judicial process and how it unfolds in a courtroom,” shared SCA STEWARDS teacher Mrs. Stacy Epema. STEWARDS is an academic enrichment resource program from Summit Christian Academy for students who demonstrate academic giftedness to the extent that continued educational growth and stimulation can best be served by an environment beyond typical grade-level curriculum.

Fifth Gr ade Students Host Annual European Fair Fifth grade students brought a taste of Europe to Lee’s Summit as they hosted the annual European Fair. The event provides a fun and interactive way for elementary students to explore European culture and cuisine. As part of their Europe unit in history class, fifth grade students selected countries to represent, and spent weeks researching, planning, and practicing. Fellow students and visitors had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and receive cultural dishes and information about each country’s history, tourist attractions, and culture.

Fifth grade students Dean Addleman, Eli Sanders, Ayla Lee, and Jenna Jones represented Austria at the European Fair.

Varsity Football Hosts Annual Flag Football Camp The Varsity Football team recently hosted 179 incoming first through eighth grade students from SCA and the Kansas City area as part of the fourth annual SCA Flag Football Camp. The goal of the five-session Flag Football Camp is to provide an opportunity for youth to learn and enjoy the game of football in a Christian environment. The camp was led by the SCA Varsity Football coaches and team, whose players coached groups of participants in basic fundamentals, offensive and defensive techniques, and a devotion. The teams had games each week and camp concluded with a “Super Bowl” that included teams with the best records. “I loved seeing the huge turnout,” shared SCA Varsity Football Coach Todd Berck. “It means football is alive and well in Lee’s Summit. Our high school players do a great job working with the campers. It gives them an opportunity to get to know the next generations of SCA Eagle players and share their faith during our devotion time. The camp continues to grow each year and we are blessed to see our SCA Football program grow because of it.”

Rodgers and Hammerstein could be grinning from the clouds above watching her twirl and musical vocal talent.” The Kansas City Cappies works with high school theatre students all over the metropolitan area. The season culminates with a grand gala event, with performances from the top ranked plays and musicals from the season, and awards given for the best performers, technicians, and writers of the year.
