what does it mean to be positive? Being positive means finding something to be happy about, and hoping for good things, even if you’re having a bad day or feeling a difficult emotion. Negativity is the opposite – it means thinking things will get worse or go wrong, and finding something to get cross about, even if your day’s going pretty well. It’s impossible to be positive all the time, so there’s no need to try! You don’t need to hide your feelings just because they aren’t hopeful or positive. Some days are really hard, and it’s OK to feel negative. The trouble is, if you feel negative most of the time, life isn’t much fun.

Activity: Which situations make me feel negative? different places or people can have a big effect on us and put us in a bad mood. Can you think of a time you felt pretty bad about yourself? Where were you? Who else was there? What happened? Write about it here:

Poppy O’Neill

ISBN: 978 1 80007 338 8 £10.99 205x158mm 144pp Paperback March 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

M Y F EELING S A ND ME

INTRODUCING POP THE MONSTER Hi! It’s so good to meet you. I’m Pop and I’m here to guide you through this book. Do you ever feel curious about your feelings? I do – they’re so interesting. There are lots of fun activities and ideas to help you learn in this book. Are you ready? Let’s get started.

ALL EMOTIONS ARE OK

Activity: Listen to your thoughts

Did you know, that all emotions are good ones? It’s true! While some emotions don’t feel very nice when you’re feeling them, that doesn’t mean that they’re bad or wrong, or that they can hurt you. Everyone is feeling emotions all day long. Mostly they change quite quickly, but sometimes they hang around all day. Not every emotion gets shown on the outside, so we don’t ever really know how most people are feeling, only those who we know really well and talk to a lot. Sometimes you might think that you’re feeling the wrong emotion or feel embarrassed about your emotions. The emotions you feel make sense because of who you are, and just because you can’t always tell why you’re feeling the way you are, doesn’t make them any less important.

Take a moment to listen to the thoughts buzzing around in your head right now. Write a few of them down here:

Emotions and thoughts both start in the brain, so they’re closely linked. If you feel happy, your thoughts will be happy, and if you feel angry your thoughts will match too.

I am special

I’m excit ed the week for end

Everyone feels nervous sometimes – perhaps because we’re trying something new, or because we worry we’re not good enough. The Compliments Collector Compliments are nice things that we say to someone or that someone says to us. Compliments are precious and important because they can make us feel special, confident and happy, and the great thing about them is we can always go back to them so we can feel those good feelings all over again.

There's no-one quite like you.

You're great.

I am my own

Collect and store your compliments safely in the butterfly frame, or copy them and cut them out so they can flutter freely on your bedroom wall.

SUPER HERO!

Saving compliments by writing them down and keeping a visual record is a great way to give your self-confidence a boost, especially if you have them to hand or in mind when you need a little courage before trying something that you might feel nervous or unsure about. Also, it’s important to remember the power of your words and how complimenting someone else can give them a self-confidence boost too! What sort of things could you say to your favourite people today? Write them down here.

The Calm Workbook The Relax-and-Chill-Out Activity Book

Imogen Harrison

ISBN: 978 1 80007 337 1 £10.99 235x167mm 128pp Paperback March 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Feeling upset or angry isn’t fun, but it’s something we all experience from time to time. Let the soothing suggestions in this book help you find the best ways to feel calm. Jar of compliments Compliments are good for you and they make you feel really good about yourself. Here’s a way to save up all the nice things that people have said to you. It could be about anything – your good manners, work you have done, a special skill, anything at all.

Mindfulness exercise 1: four senses This is as simple as it sounds. The idea is to sit quietly and notice four things around you.

Write down a compliment every time you receive one on a slip of paper, then pop it in a jam jar, so when you need a little happiness boost, you can pick out a compliment, or a handful!

Sit with your grown-up on a comfy sofa or rug. Each person takes it in turns to tell the other person something that they can:

how to make your compliments jar

SMELL

TOUCH

2. Place the jam jar upside down on a piece of paper and draw a circle that’s a thumb-size bigger than the jar, all the way round.

The next time you feel worried, try the four senses game and see if it helps you to relax.

SEE

2

The Calm Workbook_SAMPLE PAGES.indd 2-3

7. Cut some strips of paper ready to write all the compliments down for posting into the jar.

Receiving a compliment can make your day. Be sure to thank someone when they have given you a compliment and take a moment to truly enjoy what has been said. 4

20/07/2021 10:04

6. Now you have your compliments jar, ready to fill with nice things people say to you!

When you want to take out the compliments, carefully remove the lid by pulling the elastic band.

3. Cut out the paper circle, then fold it in half and snip a letterbox-shaped hole in the middle.

HEAR

5. Get a rubber band and secure the paper over the top of the jar so it stays put.

8. You can decorate the jar with marker pens or glass pens or stick stickers on to personalize it.

1. Get a clean jam jar or clear container (ask first!).

Make this a regular game to play — a good time is before bed or walking to or from school.

4. Flatten the circle and place it on top of the opening of the jar, and squash the edges down the sides of the jar.

When I do well… I’m good at… a)

Plenty of things

b)

Nothing, really

c)

One or two things

When I compare myself to others, I feel… a)

Like I’m good and so are they

b)

Worse than them

c)

Better than them

Perfection is… a)

Not a real thing!

b)

The need to be perfect or I won’t be liked

c)

Something I never quite achieve

If I make a mistake, I… a)

Try to put it right

b)

Look for someone else to blame

c)

Feel super-guilty

1 JUST BE YOU

Just Be You_SAMPLE PAGES.indd 1-2

a)

I feel proud of myself

b)

I think I should have done better

c)

I feel embarrassed to talk about it

You are OK as you are There’s a lot in this book about how to raise your selfesteem, and it can sometimes feel like self-esteem is something you’re failing at! So it’s important you know that it’s OK to have low self-esteem. It’s OK to feel sad, or embarrassed, or angry, or jealous… Whatever you are feeling at any moment is OK. The aim is not to have perfect self-esteem. That is just as impossible as having perfect skin. A person with flawless skin would probably be a robot. And the same goes for anyone with 100 per cent bulletproof selfesteem: probably a robot. Sometimes we do mess up, and we all have flaws. The aim is to shift the way you think about yourself, so that your self-talk is kinder and more patient. Then when you mess up, your thoughts will bring you a bit of comfort rather than yelling at you.

Saying “no” is… a)

Sometimes tricky, but I do it anyway

b)

Unkind

c)

Something I try to avoid

Mostly As: you have high self-esteem! You have heaps of self-respect, and you know how to treat yourself and others well. This book will help you strengthen it even more, as well as recognize the signs of low selfesteem in others. Mostly Bs: your self-esteem is pretty low. You tend to put yourself last, and you worry about what other people think of you – even if they treat you badly. You could do with a big self-esteem boost. Your feelings matter. Mostly Cs: you could do with working on your self-esteem. You know how to give yourself a boost when you’re feeling down, which is great. Strengthening your self-esteem will help you feel good about yourself, whatever happens.

On this page, write the things that give you a real boost – you can come back to it any time you need. I can talk to…

An idea that helps me… (E.g. don’t compare yourself to others)

An activity that helps me… (E.g. gratitude journaling)

Remember that… (E.g. I am OK as I am)

A movie that makes me feel good…

Turn the page to learn more about growing your self-esteem – you can do this!

A song that fills me with confidence…

Key Selling Points: • A fun and friendly guide for 8–12-year-old girls on navigating all aspects of growing up, from body confidence and managing moods to preparing for exams, new schools and new friendships. • It’s interactive with quizzes and fun activities, and also includes space for journaling. • It’s covert rather than overt mental health support and is beautifully packaged, making it a perfect birthday present.

Feet Dreams

Feet can get really yucky, especially over the winter when they’re stuffed into socks and forgotten about. Then the sun surprises us and we need to titillate our tootsies for flip-flop fabulousness! This self-care routine is the most effective if you perform it just before you go to bed in the evening.

Get it?!

Step 1 Find or ask for a foot file; and take a few minutes to work at smoothing off any dry skin from the heels and balls of your feet while your feet are still dry. Don’t leave skin flakes all over the floor!

LIFE OF ALL

Step 2 Fill a washing-up or any large bowl with warm water; add a handful of Epsom salts if you have them or a spoonful of olive oil if you don’t. Ask an adult if there are any essential oils in your home as adding a few drops of these can make your foot bath very luxurious. After five to ten minutes, dry your feet thoroughly, then clip nails straight across and file the edges smooth.

Step 3 Rub a little almond or olive oil into your cuticles (the skin at the bottom of your nails) and push them gently back using a cuticle stick if you have one or the fleshy tip of your index finger. Continue by massaging foot cream into your feet; then wrap your feet in cling film, put on your socks and go to bed!

So it’s your glittering future and inevitably Hollywood has bought the rights to the film of your life. You have the ultimate choice of casting so who’s it going to be? Who would you choose to fill the roles of your family and friends? 7

In My Head A Young Person’s Guide to Understanding Mental Health

Louise Baty

ISBN: 978 1 80007 195 7 £10.99 210x148mm 160pp Paperback June 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

This accessible guide will help 11–15-year-olds to understand and manage their mental health. Including an A–Z of common mental-health conditions, self-care tips and a mood-tracker section, In My Head will help readers get to know their own minds, and give them the tools and techniques to make sure they’re feeling happy and healthy. Louise Baty is a freelance journalist and author who writes about parenting and health. She has contributed to a wide range of publications, including the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror, the Daily Express, Take a Break, Bella, Woman’s Own, Top Santé and Prima Baby. She lives with her family in Nottinghamshire.

Key Selling Point: • A useful support tool for parents, teachers and carers.

Recognising toxic relationships and how to deal with them

Self-care is super

C H ASelf-cPareTE R 3: AKA Looking After Myself

Self-care isn’t selfish or self-indulgent; it’s about being kind to yourself so that you’re strong enough to weather life’s storms. You may be tackling exams, navigating tricky friendships or wondering about the importance of sleep and diet. By understanding your personal selfcare needs, you can build an indestructible tool kit for dealing with difficult times.

Relationships – romantic or otherwise – can be tricky. It’s not always obvious when a friend isn’t treating you well. Maybe your more confident friend uses you as the butt of their jokes. Perhaps a so-called mate is pressurising you try to something you’re not sure about – whether it’s cheating with school work, lying to your parents or something else like drugs, alcohol or sex. Ask yourself: “Does this person have my best interests at heart?” If you’re unsure, it might be time to take a step back. Remember that healthy relationships are built on mutual respect and understanding – if you can’t talk to your friend about your misgivings then they’re probably not really a friend. Consider the importance of self-care here too. If a friend is making you feel bad about yourself, it’s time to nurture your self-esteem by trying new things and meeting new people. Be your own best friend first and foremost.

Help Your Child Cope with Change 101 Ways to Ease Worries and Build Inner-Strength

Liat Hughes Joshi

ISBN: 978 1 80007 194 0 £10.99 210x148mm 160pp Paperback June 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

As parents and carers, we try everything in our power to shield our children and prepare them emotionally for disappointments and upsets, but sometimes it can be hard to know what to do for the best. This book offers 101 tips that will give you and your child the tools to navigate these difficult times with kindness and care. Liat Hughes Joshi writes about parenting and lifestyle issues in The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times and The Guardian. She also makes regular appearances on TV and radio.

Key Selling Point: • The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have seen many children suffer firsthand due to lack of emotional support when their routine has been disrupted. This book will help parents to feel empowered and prepared for when their child needs support. HELP YOUR CHILD COPE WITH CHANGE

Break sad/bad news as soon as possible

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD THROUGH TOUGH TIMES

Mark a loved one’s life in personal ways

HELP YOUR CHILD COPE WITH CHANGE

Retain routines

Sharing difficult news, such as a bereavement or separation/ divorce, with your child can be daunting, especially when you’re probably feeling upset about it yourself. But it’s important that you don’t delay telling them for too long, otherwise they might hear it from someone else or overhear a conversation. By sharing the news yourself, you can have a little more control over what is said and where and when your child is at the time (within reason), plus you can be there to offer hugs, reassurance and answer any questions.

There’s no set answer as to whether a child should attend a funeral (see page x) but regardless of whether they go or not, it can help children to have their own, personal and age appropriate ways to say goodbye to the friend or family member concerned. What will comfort and appeal will vary but they could write a letter or poem about the person, create a memory book or box with photos and keepsakes, draw pictures, visit a special place they used to go to together, or plant a tree with you.

At a time when a significant aspect of their life is in flux, try to at least keep your child’s daily routine as close to normal as possible. Of course this isn’t always easy in times of turmoil, but if you can, sticking to their usual mealtimes, bedtimes, clubs and activities will be comforting and grounding.

Behaviour boundaries: extra leeway but not anything goes Let your child know that it is okay and normal to feel angry, upset or stressed with everything that is going on in their life but that there are still limits to acceptable behaviour and they should not direct their anger at other people. If how they are behaving would normally be unacceptable, for instance, they hit you or a sibling or are damaging things, you might want to be a little gentler than normal in your approach but do still let them know that this is wrong and if they continue there will be consequences.

Life is Tough, But So Are You Tips and Thoughtful Advice for Developing Mental Strength and Resilience

Debbi Marco

ISBN: 978 1 80007 155 1 £8.99 154x111mm 160pp Hardback January 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

We all face ups and downs from time to time. Bursting with useful tips, kind advice and encouraging affirmations, this handy guide will provide the tools you need to overcome adversity and bounce back even stronger. Debbi Marco is a journalist, editor and mum of two. She likes to spend her spare time running, eating delicious food, drinking gin and hanging out with her family and friends. To see more of her work visit debbimarco.co.uk.

Key Selling Points: • Awareness of mental health issues is a priority across a range of institutions, with many introducing new initiatives to focus on this. • Will appeal to those who enjoyed It’s OK Not to Be OK (ISBN: 9781786859853), which has sold over 32,000 copies. Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.

REMEMBER TO BREATHE. Often in times of stress and adversity, your breathing can get shallow and cause tightness in your chest. Take a few minutes each day just to check in with your breath. Breath in through your nose for a count of five, hold for five and then release for five. Repeat for five minutes several times a day or whenever you have time.

WHAT IS RESILIENCE?

If you’ve ever heard the phrase ‘if life gives you lemons make lemonade’ then you’re already halfway to understanding resilience. Resilience is the ability to bounce back when life is tough. But don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re not being resilient if you are suffering from anxiety, stress or suffering. Resilience means you know how to keep going even when you’re finding it hard, and recognise that loss and change are an essential part of life. Resilient people know how to tap into their strengths and support systems in order to succeed. But resilience isn’t built in a day; it’s something you must practise and work on in order to maximise your journey through life.

Gardening for Mind, Body and Soul How to Nurture Your Well-Being with Nature

Annie Burdick

ISBN: 978 1 80007 162 9 £12.99 195x149mm 160pp Hardback February 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

From discovering which plants to grow for scent that can be both uplifting and soothing, to learning about birdsong and how it can boost happiness, this book will help you discover the joys and health-giving benefits of nurturing a garden. Annie Burdick is a writer, editor and community inclusion specialist for disabled adults. She lives in Oregon with her partner and rescue dog. She has written for Eater, The Spruce, O.School, Llewellyn’s Herbal Almanac and other publications.

Key Selling Points: • With beautiful photographs to aid identification of plants, this book is a lovely house-warming gift that is suitable for both novice and expert gardeners. • Contains fascinating information from gardeners and psychologists on the health and well-being benefits of gardens and gardening. SCENTED PLANTS FOR

BOOST POSITIVITY,

Be at Stress A great deal of the benefits (and the most important ones) you get from gardening actually happen internally, in the brain, so they aren’t too obvious right away. Many studies have connected the act of gardening to marked reductions in cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone directly connected to our stress responses, and increased levels are connected to mental health issues, weight gain, memory problems, and reduced immunity. So, as you garden and those cortisol levels drop, all of those issues can start to improve-sometimes quite notably. Alongside that, gardening time has also been proven to provide endorphins, the body’s chemicals to relieve stress and boost happiness. So, that thirty minutes outside tending to your plants and watching birds? It’s likely making you happier and less stressed, plus all the health benefits that come with those improvements.

There are some very simple actions you can incorporate on a regular basis while gardening, in order to reap these benefits of increased positivity and reduced stress. Start here: •

Smile at your plants, and at your progress! Though it may sound or feel silly, the physical act of smiling, especially at something you genuinely enjoy, actually gives a boost of endorphins and increases those positive feelings you get when you see your blooming flowers and peaceful garden space.

Plan your garden ahead of time. If you make a little plan for where shrubs and flowers will be planted, where other elements will be placed, and how the final garden will look, when you see the plan come to fruition before your eyes, that satisfaction in realizing a goal will inevitably produce endorphins and lower cortisol levels.

You an d Yo u r G arden Knowing the basic benefits of smell, it’s time to dive into some of the best plants to grow in your garden to reap those pleasant-scent benefits, whether it’s reliving positive memories, feeling more emotionally calm and happy, or gaining a bit of productivity and focus. These are just a few plants, of a massive array of options, to bring lovely scents into your garden.

Mother Power A Feminist’s Guide to Motherhood

Poppy O’Neill

ISBN: 978 1 80007 278 7 £10.99 210x148mm 160pp Paperback June 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

This wake-up call for mums everywhere will demonstrate how looking after your own well-being can make you a better parent. Fully embrace motherhood with simple rules including honouring your own needs with a positive, guilt-free attitude to self-care and trusting your gut when it comes to knowing what’s best for your child.

Key Selling Point: • The effects of the pandemic and lockdown have fallen disproportionately on mothers’ shoulders and conversations around maternal mental health will only increase over the next few years because of the current situation.

Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is selfpreservation.

Nurture your female friendships Good Stuff/Bad Stuff

SELF-CARE WHILE CARING FOR KIDS

Whoever decided that putting yourself first was a negative thing? If you don’t put yourself first, nobody else is going to. And yet, so many of us were told as children that it was our job to put other people first in order to be accepted. It’s a toxic message to give to little girls and it’s a toxic message to be carrying in adulthood. Never sticking up for yourself for fear of inconveniencing someone else might feel like it will win you friends, but all it really gets you is trampled boundaries and resentment.

It’s become a cliché that mums of young kids can’t go to the toilet without the baby, toddler and dog in tow. But it doesn’t have to be this way. As long as your child is safe, you can take care of your needs away from them, even if they don’t like it. Your child, no matter how old they are, is allowed to feel difficult feelings.

If you use the word selfish for yourself or anyone else, try adjusting the language you use: I’m being so selfish I’m looking out for myself She’s so selfish She’s good at standing up for herself

Nurturing your female friendships is a powerful feminist act. Even if you have a female partner, platonic relationships with other women are essential to your wellbeing as a mother. Find a circle of women you can laugh, cry and empathise with, who understand what it’s like and you can be your true self around. Who has popped into your head when you read that? Text that friend right now and arrange to meet up. It might take time to find your tribe, and it’s much better to have one great friend than a handful of women you don’t feel you quite fit with. Be yourself, say no to what you don’t want and yes to what you do, and your people will find you.

It helps to talk to your child – even if they’re too little to understand – about where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Learning that mum goes away and always returns is an important developmental process, and going for a quick wee without them is a safe, manageable way to kick it off.

That was really selfish of you When you did that, I felt overlooked Meeting a friend for coffee instead of doing housework is selfish healthy It would be selfish fair to ask my partner to take on more childcare … it might feel weird at first, but the words we use to describe ourselves and others have a big effect on our worldview. Slowly, the way you think about things will shift, and it will feel easier and more natural to prioritize yourself.

Of course, there are limits to this – for example, the age at which you feel comfortable leaving your child with a babysitter is hugely personal and not something to be rushed. It takes faith in your own judgement to strike a good balance between responding to your child’s emotions and taking care of yourself.

Worry vs anxiety

Common worries

Worry pretends to be

necessary, but serves no useful purpose.

ECKHART TOLLE

The words “worry” and “anxiety” are often used interchangeably, but there are some key psychological (and physiological) differences. Worrying tends to be purely thought based, in relation to a specific event or problem. Anxiety, on the other hand, relates to your body’s physiological response to fear: the “fight, flight or freeze” response. Anxiety can be a lot more free-floating and less specific. Because worrying thoughts can trigger anxiety, it’s important to learn how to control worry, to stop it getting out of hand.

If you worry often – especially if your worries keep you awake at night or if they feel chronic – you might feel very alone with your fears. But you’re really not: pretty much everyone knows what it feels like to worry, and most people’s worries will be big at some point in their lives. As with everything in life, worries will fluctuate. Sometimes you’ll go through periods where life feels great, other times niggling worries will persistently enter your thoughts, disturbing your inner peace. And while everyone’s worries will be slightly different, there are often common themes: financial, employment, relationship and health worries are all common in adults. And remember, children worry, too. Just because a child’s fears don’t seem big to you, it doesn’t mean they aren’t big to them, so it’s important to acknowledge everyone’s worries, whatever their age.

How to Find Your Mental Strength Tips and Techniques to Help You Build a Tougher Mindset

Zeena Moolla

ISBN: 978 1 80007 187 2 £10.99 210x148mm 160pp Paperback May 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Mental strength is the capacity to cope with life challenges; it’s about creating habits, building effective coping strategies and exercising the mental muscles that allow you to see the positives in difficult situations. In this book you will learn how to cultivate positive thinking, as well as techniques for building your mental strength. Zeena Moolla is an author and journalist, writing for publications including Marie Claire, Grazia, The Telegraph, The Mirror and Red magazine.

Key Selling Points: • Contains short, practical and easy-to-understand tips to help the reader build mental strength. • A Summersdale book on a similar topic, Be a Warrior, Not a Worrier (ISBN: 9781786855671), has sold over 12,000 copies. Chapter one

WHAT IS

MENTAL STRENGTH? So, what exactly is mental strength? Let’s take a typical life example to help explain. Imagine you’ve applied for a job. Your application is successful, the interview goes beautifully and you’re all but shopping for a new office mug. However, someone else gets the job. Pretty galling, right? It would be easy to slip into negative thinking. “I should have said this”, “This always happens to me”, “I’ve failed.” But, with some reframing, you might instead think: “I did well to get that far”, “The interview couldn’t have gone any better”, “Maybe another position will arise.” It’s not about suppressing any natural disappointment. It’s about harnessing any positive points from that experience to embrace a healthy perspective to face this adversity and others, without fear of failure or self-doubt. This is good mental strength.

"

Physical strength

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. It’s well-documented that there is a clear correlation between mental wellbeing and physical exercise. Levels of serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, norepinephrine and endorphins – the five brain chemicals known for maintaining mental well-being – increase markedly with significant physical activity. But if joining a gym or pounding round a park isn’t your thing, just factor in an extra-long, brisk walk every day. Just remember, it’s not only your body that stands to benefit; it’s your brain, too.

Between soaring mountains, across arid deserts, parched plains and bountiful valleys, down glittering coastlines and along viaducts towering above plunging ravines… there is no better way to see Spain than by train. Tom Chesshyre hits the tracks to take in the country on a series of clattering rides beyond the popular image of “holiday Spain”. Tom Chesshyre is the author of ten travel books. He has travelled 40,000 miles around the world for his train books; most recently for Slow Trains Around Spain. His book writing has also taken him across North Africa after the Arab Spring, round the “dark side” of the Maldives on cargo ships and on a journey through “unsung Britain” (in To Hull and Back). He worked on the travel desk of The Times for 21 years and is now freelance. His train column “Tickets, Please” appears in The Critic magazine. He lives in London.

Riding Out A Life-Affirming Journey Around the Coast of Britain

Simon Parker

ISBN: 978 1 80007 499 6 £14.99 222x144mm 320pp Hardback April 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

In March 2020, as Britain went into lockdown, Simon Parker’s life fell apart; his career disappeared and he received the news that a close friend had died. With an anxiety disorder starting to rear its head, he turned to two trusted therapies: travel and exercise. Setting off from the northernmost point of Shetland with only a sleeping bag and a camping stove, Simon would end up cycling 3,427 miles around Britain. En route, he would meet hundreds of resilient Britons, who were all, in their own way, riding out the storm just like he was. On his way, Simon learns that life’s sharpest corners are often best navigated at the gentle pace of a bicycle. Simon Parker is an Oxfordshire-based travel writer and broadcaster who has reported from over 100 countries, and has worked for the BBC and The Telegraph among many others.

Key Selling Points: • Britain by Bike was a successful Telegraph series, in print, online and in film. Riding Out has all-new and original content. • A gritty story, told with touches of humour. It covers important and relevant themes such as men’s mental health, anxiety, grief, loneliness and depression, as well as the author’s financial troubles, COVID-19, Brexit and Britain today.

A good pocket-sized field guide with clear pictures is essential. If you are not 100 per cent certain that you can correctly identify a plant, DO NOT PICK IT! Clothing: you will inevitably encounter nettles and brambles, so long trousers, long sleeves, gardening gloves and sturdy boots are recommended.

E

Secateurs or scissors are useful and cause less damage to the plants. I wouldn’t advise carrying a knife for safety’s sake. Baskets are best to transport soft fruit, keeping it in the best condition. And I always like to carry extra bags for those unexpected finds.

E

“Hooky stick”: My own invention – a long piece of garden cane with a large hook screwed into the end. This will gently pull the higher branches down to you, because the best fruits are always just out of reach! A walking cane will work just as well.

Location: If you wish to forage on private land you MUST get permission from the landowner first. I find that the promise of some homemade goodies usually persuades them to welcome your visit. Avoid areas that have been contaminated by road pollution or fields that have been sprayed with pesticides or may have been contaminated by dogs. Respect nature: Pick no more than you need, leaving plenty for wildlife to enjoy. Try not to disturb habitats and take all rubbish away with you. Stay away from any Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in the UK as these are protected for a reason. Do not pick endangered species: (Your field guide should help you.) The digging up of roots is frowned upon unless they are abundant and a common species. Be cautious when trying new foods: Be especially cautious if you have any medical conditions. Share your knowledge: Teach others how to forage safely and sustainably. 5

26/07/2021 16:27

The winter hedgerows are a very sad sight indeed, and it’s hard to imagine that there will be much for a forager to find. However, even in the depths of winter – and on the greyest of days – you’ll be able to discover some medicinal and foodie treasures. Often thought of as the quieter months in the foraging calendar (the berries and nuts of autumn are long gone), you won’t find wild food in abundance at this time of year, but there are still some tasty greens and roots on offer. Our ancestors would have foraged for nettles, chickweed, hairy bittercress, common sorrel, wild chervil and dandelion roots to supplement their winter diet. These foraged greens were a vital supply of vitamins and minerals and would have been made into a “pottage” with whatever meat and vegetables they had left from the autumn. Pottage was a stew that would be kept on the stove constantly and was a lifeline during the so-called “hungry gap” before any crops were available later in the spring. I like to spend the winter months clearing out my store cupboards and freezers and making lists of what needs using up before I even think of gathering more. Only ever forage what you need – leave the rest for wildlife and other foragers. Berries collected in the autumn are good for a year in the freezer, but do make sure that you rotate and label everything carefully so you’re not guessing at the contents. Check any dried plant material to ensure that it is free from mould and still smells as it should. Prepare any infused oils and vinegars with last

Wonder Dogs True Stories of Canine Courage

Ben Holt

ISBN: 978 1 80007 180 3 £8.99 198x129mm 208pp Paperback April 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that dogs are pretty great. Whether they’re saving humans from dangerous people or situations or just following their instincts to do good, the true stories featured in this collection prove that dogs aren’t only man’s best friend – they’re also inspirational, courageous and selfless companions to us all.

Key Selling Points: • A revised and updated edition of Wonder Dogs (ISBN: 9781849539975) with new content, celebrating some incredible doggy heroes in these inspirational true stories. • There are 8.5 million dogs kept as pets in the UK alone, not to mention service dogs or working dogs who help save lives every day. Taking The Plunge 9

WhiZZ ChaPTeR 1

Measuring more than six feet tall when standing on his hind legs, Whizz the heroic Newfoundland left giant shoes to fill when he passed away in 2016 after a lifetime spent working in water rescue, as well as enriching the lives of sick children and adults…

Taking The Plunge Some breeds of dog, such as Labradors and golden retrievers, are natural-born swimmers, while others – such as bulldogs, boxers, greyhounds and Dobermann pinschers – are distinctly not! As the selection of stories in this section on water rescues shows, however, it’s not its degree of affinity for water that determines whether a dog will risk its life to save a drowning person – or even drowning animals – it’s the instinctive drive that many dogs seem to possess to help other creatures in distress. Although many of the stories here feature Labradors, retrievers and other breeds that are comfortable in water, others are about loyal pets of indiscriminate breed who are determined, whatever the cost to themselves, to save their owners from danger.

After a frantic but fruitless search of the area after one of her red setters, Topper, went missing on a walk, Charlotte Burroughs was lucky enough to bump into David Pugh and his Newfoundland, Whizz. When she asked David if he’d seen Topper along the way, Whizz took off without hesitation for the local water treatment plant, where Topper was floundering around in the water, unable to get out and in grave danger of drowning. Whizz dragged him out, to Charlotte’s eternal gratitude. But this was by no means Whizz’s first rescue. Over the course of a decade, the 12-stone hero – a true gentle giant – had rescued nine people from drowning as he patrolled the Bristol Channel and the River Severn with the Royal Navy Rescue, the Severn Area Rescue Association and Marine Volunteer Service. Among those he saved were two small girls who got into trouble in their inflatable dinghy on the Welsh coast and a woman who suffered an asthma attack whilst swimming in the Bristol Channel. He also worked as a therapy dog, visiting the sick and elderly as well as injured servicemen and women. Whizz was awarded the PDSA Order of Merit – the animal equivalent of an OBE – for outstanding devotion to duty in March 2016.

23 WOnDeR DOgS

The FiRST WaTeR ReSCue DOg One of the earliest references to water rescue dogs is an ancient seafaring tale about a spectacular rescue of a drowning sailor by a Newfoundland dog, who pulled the man back onto the boat after he had been swept off the deck during a storm. The story was the inspiration behind the founding of the Italian School of Rescue Dogs (Scuola Italiana Cani Salvataggio, SICS) in 1989 by Ferruccio Pilenga, together with his Newfoundland dog called Mas. Today it is the largest national organisation dedicated to the training of dogs and their handlers for water rescue. Any breed of dog can undergo training here, though it must weigh more than 30 kilograms and be confident in the water. The school’s high standards and modern techniques revolve around collaborating with the coast guards and studying their use of dinghies, helicopters and sailing and air instruments. Its training programme’s focus is on creating a very strong two-way relationship between dog and handler where both rely on each other:

Taking The Plunge 24

The training programme develops the dogs’ power and stamina to an incredible degree: one dog alone will be able to pull a boat full of 30 people for between 300 and 2,000 metres. By the end of training, dog and handler will be able to swim side by side in complete synchronisation, essential during a rescue. A qualification certificate (the SICS) is issued when the required standard is successfully reached. The Italian School of Rescue Dogs is also the only institution in Europe to organise yearly classes for heli-rescue dogs, and collaborates with the various Italian heli-rescue teams (from Air Rescue, the Air Force, Police, Customs, the Fire Service and Civil Defence).

Following the rigorous training programme of both dog and handler, with the assistance of the dog the handler will be able to resuscitate a person whilst still in the water.

The exploration missions of the 1960s showed it wasn’t made of green cheese, wasn’t inhabited by a giant rabbit, and wasn’t composed of metres-deep loose dust. The Moon has been thought to influence human reproduction and moods, and affect the behaviour of animals. It does affect the Earth’s water, producing tides. The Moon orbits the Earth every 27 days. It has no ‘dark side’, but presents the same part of its surface to us on Earth due to tidal locking. Its surface, covered in impact craters, has large dark-coloured ‘seas’ composed of volcanic rock and hilly highland areas. Exploration began in the late 1950s and resulted in the first human landing in 1969 by Apollo 11.

Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System, being not much bigger than Earth’s Moon. Despite being closest to the Sun it is not the hottest planet – that honour belongs to Venus. During the day temperatures can reach 430°C (800°F) but drop to -180°C (-290°F) at night. This small planet has a non-circular elliptical orbit, ranging from 47 to 70 million km (29–43 million miles) and it’s a fast one; Mercury is the speediest of planets, orbiting at over 170,000 km per hour (106,000 mph). This results in an orbit of the Sun in 88 (Earth) days though its ‘day’ – the time for it to rotate around its own axis – is 59 (Earth) days. Due to its unusual orbit and rotation, if you were on Mercury’s surface the time between one sunrise and the next would be 176 days.

Moon

In appearance, Mercury is similar to the Moon, with a heavily cratered rocky surface. The biggest impact basin (a crater large than 250 km (155 miles) diameter) is called Caloris, at 1,550 km (960 miles) in diameter, and was created by the impact of an asteroid millions of years ago. Water ice has been found in deep craters on the planet’s poles, probably from asteroids or comets that have impacted the surface. Features such as craters on Mercury are named after artists, composers and writers, and include:

Neil Armstrong 1930–2012 Neil Armstrong caught the bug for aviation aged two when taken to an air race. He gained his pilot’s licence before his driving one and built a wind tunnel to test his flying models. He flew jets in the Korean War before becoming a test pilot and flew the X-15 rocket-powered aircraft to over 63,000 m (207,000 feet) and five times the speed of sound. These were to be surpassed when he joined NASA’s astronaut corps. Armstrong was selected as commander of Gemini 8 and with David Scott was fortunate to survive when the spacecraft went out of control in Earth orbit. Armstrong’s cool thinking brought the situation under control. He was not known for saying much but in July 1969 his words were heard around the world when Armstrong announced the first successful human lunar landing with “the Eagle has landed” and then with his first steps on the lunar surface several hours later. Neil Armstrong accepted his worldwide fame but insisted Apollo 11’s achievements were a team effort.

lots of moisture when they are frozen so be sure to grate them first. Store egg whites separately if you’ve used the yolks for baking. If you want to store your eggs, then beat them first before sealing them in an airtight container in the freezer. Boiled eggs can be frozen with the shell removed, but they do also last around two days in a fridge. These are great for salads, or snacks on the go. Although milk is fine to freeze it can become lumpy when thawed, or full-fat milk can separate, which may slightly affect the taste. If you do freeze it make sure there is enough room in the container for it to expand. This goes for anything that’s a liquid! Sour cream can be frozen, but the texture changes considerably so you may only want to use it in this way when it’s part of a recipe.

WHAT TO DO WITH LEFTOVERS As different leftover food needs to be stored in different ways and kept for specific amounts of time, the rule of thumb is to store it in an airtight glass or plastic container in the refrigerator and eat it within two days.

Leaving cooked food on your countertop to cool before storing is a myth, and one that could be potentially harmful. Leaving food out at room temperature encourages bacteria to thrive. Initiate the two-hour rule: food should only be out for two hours before placing in the fridge or freezer.

What to store leftovers in

Scoop out around 1 heaped tablespoon of the mixture and add a 2-cm piece of mozzarella. Form a ball, then roll in the flour. Shake off any excess flour, then roll in the egg. Roll in the breadcrumbs until well coated. Repeat for all six balls.

Health issues with plastic According to Harvard Health, certain chemicals in plastic can leach out of the plastic into the food and beverages we consume. Research shows links between these chemicals, namely phthalates and bisphenol A, and health problems such as metabolic disorders and reduced fertility. And if you microwave your food in its plastic container – you may be receiving an even higher dose of potentially harmful chemicals.

In a clean saucepan heat oil (enough to submerge the balls) until tiny bubbles begin to form at the bottom and a piece of bread sizzles immediately when dipped in. Place the balls into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, turning, if necessary, to cook evenly.

What to use instead Glass containers or BPA-free plastic containers with air vents are best to store your food, leftovers, or ingredients. Make sure the lid fits securely – not just to

My Tiny Kitchen Garden Simple Tips to Help You Grow Your Own Herbs, Fruits and Vegetables

Felicity Hart

ISBN: 978 1 80007 347 0 £8.99 154x111mm 128pp Hardback February 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

This book is the perfect beginner’s guide to micro-gardening. Whether you want to produce fresh herbs for your cooking, save money on your food bill, reduce your carbon footprint or enjoy the simple pleasure of watching something grow, My Tiny Kitchen Garden is bursting with tips and ideas to help you get started.

Key Selling Points: • It features simple plant-care tips, handy troubleshooting advice and plant profiles to help the reader choose the plant that’s right for them. • A similar Summersdale title, The Little Book for Plant Parents (ISBN: 9781787836877), has sold over 10,000 copies.

Mung Bean Sprouts

Indoor plant All you need to grow mung bean sprouts is a shady countertop or a drawer. They are the perfect project for the tiniest of kitchen gardens. As a bonus, they grow fast and are tasty additions to many meals. All hail the tiny but mighty mung bean!

Method: Step 1: Paint your tin in the base colour of your choice and leave to dry.

Bright tin plant pots This DIY brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

You’ll need: • An empty, clean tin (be careful of sharp edges) • Acrylic paints in your chosen colours • Permanent marker (optional)

Step 2: Paint your desired pattern over your base colour; bright pastels tend to work well over a white background. If you’re unsure about your design at first, mark out your idea using pencil (you can always come back and erase the pencil marks later). Step 3: Use a permanent marker to add extra detail or definition to your design. Metallic permanent markers offer an added shimmer.

• Top tip: Keep the sprouts at room temperature. Store the growing jar away from the light in order to produce a white bean sprout. Sprouts that are exposed to light gain a green tinge and the flavour alters. Both white and green-tinged sprouts are edible – it’s a matter of personal taste. • Recipes: Mung bean sprouts add a tasty crunch to foods such as stir fries and Asian salads. Foodies can also add them to home made spring rolls

Step 4: Allow to dry and add your plant.

• Growing conditions: Mung beans don’t even need soil to grow. Simply measure several tablespoons of beans into a jar, cover with muslin or a breathable fabric and fill with water until the beans are covered. Soak overnight, rinse, refill and repeat over several days. You’ll be munching on mung bean sprouts within 5 – 6 days.

Maya Angelou – the name behind some of the Instagram’s most #empowering quotes. But did you know that this wonder-lady was the first black woman to write a major US screenplay? Or that it was five years of being mute that developed her world-inspiring love for language? It’s safe to say that Maya was incredibly special. Born in 1928 in Missouri, Marguerite “Maya” Angelou’s childhood was far from easy. At just eight years old, she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. When Maya found the courage to speak out about this, her rapist was murdered by her uncles for his crime. It was this harrowing experience that led to Maya becoming mute. Convinced her “voice was so powerful it could kill people” she didn’t speak to anyone but her beloved brother, Bailey, for almost half a decade. Her lack of verbal communication didn’t stop her love of language – far from it. Maya read continuously during her chapter of silence. She covered everything from literature penned by famous black authors, like W.E.B. Du Bois, to William Shakespeare’s classics. And when she was twelve and a half, an educated black woman, Mrs Flowers (of Mrs Flowers: A Moment of Friendship) helped Maya find her voice again. Surviving a traumatic childhood was just the start of Maya’s magnificent accomplishments in life. At 16, she made history by becoming San Francisco’s first Dr Maya angelou 2

black and first female cable-car conductor, before giving birth to her son, Guy – all whilst studying! During his early life, she took on a number of jobs – ranging from hamburger chef to Calypso dancer. But it wasn’t long before she exchanged her dancing shoes for pen and paper and rekindled her love affair with the written word. After joining the Harlem Writers Guild, she met Martin Luther King who soon became a close friend and a catalyst for her civil rights activism. Along with her partner at the time, John Killens, Maya organized cabarets to raise funds for Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She soon took a job there, devoting her time to fighting against inequality and injustice. But darkness descended again for Maya when Martin Luther King was shot on her birthday in 1968. She stopped celebrating her birthdays for years but battled for change for the rest of her life – not just for herself but for people struggling all around the world. Encouraged by a good friend, Maya channelled her experiences and emotions into her first book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. To this day, it’s known as one of the most influential autobiographies of all time. Finding the bravery to document her struggles and survival paved the foundations for Maya’s legacy of inspiration. She went on to write six more autobiographies, inaugurate a president, become a doctor, and she never stopped fighting for freedom. In fact, she was awarded the Presidential Medal for 2 IConIC PeoPle oF Colour

Freedom by Obama just four years before she died. Her most powerful qualities? Hope and courage. Maya never gave up. She bounced back. She encouraged others to believe in better and stood up for what’s right. In her very own words: you may encounter many defeats but you must never be defeated. A true survivor.

HER AWESOME ACHIEVEMENTS Î Organised key events during the Civil Rights Movement, along with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Î The first female poet to recite a poem for a US Presidential Inauguration. Î Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civil honor in the US, from Barack Obama. Î Awarded honorary degrees from more than 50 universities. Î Won Pulitizer Prize for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

The Little Book of World Mythology A Pocket Guide to Myths and Legends

Hannah Bowstead

ISBN: 978 1 80007 176 6 £6.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback April 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

This handy guide offers readers an accessible introduction to the major world mythologies, their origins, foundational stories and key mythological figures. It is a perfect starting point for anyone looking to enrich their understanding of world history, religion, arts, literature and culture. Hannah Bowstead works in a museum and enjoys writing about culture, crafting and navigating the pitfalls of modern life. She grew up in Essex but now lives in Surbiton with her boyfriend.

Key Selling Point: • Covers mythologies from a range of continents and time periods in a clear, concise and engaging manner.

CENTRAL EUROPE The Ancient Greeks and Romans were natural storytellers. Indeed, many consider the Greeks (in particular Homer) responsible for the birth of Western literature, and the Romans were eager to build on this legacy. Their mythologies are accordingly grand – and super fun. The vibrant body of Greek mythology features the 12 all-star Olympian gods, their predecessors the Titans, and their messy encounters, in all their glory, with ordinary mortals. These myths explained creation and natural phenomena, extolled the exploits of superstar heroes like Heracles and Achilles, and explored the origins of Greek culture and customs. Greek gods helped to make sense of the arbitrary and chaotic nature of life: if you drowned in a shipwreck, it was because you’d forgotten to make adequate sacrifices to Poseidon. Whoops. The Greek gods were an awful lot like humans: temperamental, hot-headed, jealous and constantly bickering, so naturally a world run by them would be, well, a bit all over the place.

2

Greek mythology had enormous influence over the arts and literature of its time, and still does in today’s Western world – even if you haven’t seen Troy or Disney’s Hercules, you’ll probably have learned about the Oedipus complex or accidentally downloaded a Trojan Horse virus. These ancient stories still resonate with us today. It’s easy to think that Roman mythology basically asked to copy the Greeks’ homework and the Greeks said, “Sure, but change it up so it’s not obvious.” Many of the same characters and stories reappear, with different names or variations, and the Romans repurposed and expanded these tales. But it’s unfair to say the Romans simply stole their mythology from the Greeks – although they did really, really want to be as cool as them. As the Roman Empire expanded, so did its pantheon. Instead of forbidding the gods of the cultures they’d conquered, the Romans assimilated them into their existing religion. What results is a rich tapestry that interweaves mythological elements from Greece and other cultures with Roman tales and morals.

3

HOMER’S ILIAD

HOMER’S ODYSSEY

One of the earliest works of Western literature is the Iliad, an epic poem about the Trojan War by Homer. Although he is referred to as the father of Western literature, little is known about Homer for sure. Was he a man, a woman or multiple people? Was he blind? Did he love Duff Beer and doughnuts? We don’t know! The Iliad was first written down in around the 8th century BC, but was composed orally before that, and recounted by bards and poets across the years. The poem narrates a period of a few weeks towards the end of the war, during which Achilles quarrels with Agamemnon over a girl (times don’t change much, do they?), throws a major tantrum and refuses to continue fighting. The resulting events culminate in the deaths of both Patroclus, Achilles’ close companion and probable lover, and Hector, the heir to the Trojan throne. This sets in motion the events that will bring the war to its bloodthirsty conclusion.

The sister poem to the Iliad is Homer’s Odyssey. The narrative focuses on the Greek hero Odysseus’ ten-yearlong journey home after the Trojan War. Although apparently desperate to be reunited with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus, Odysseus is a fan of a side-quest, and the poem narrates his run-ins with the cyclops Polyphemus, the witch Circe, the nymph Calypso, the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis and the alluring Sirens. Along the way, Odysseus loses every single one of his 600-or-so crewmates. Every. Single. One. Eventually, Odysseus makes it home to Ithaca, and proceeds to slay all 108 of the suitors who, believing him dead, are vying for Penelope’s hand. What an ending. The Odyssey, along with the Iliad, has had an enormous impact on Western literature and art. The word “odyssey” is still used to describe a lengthy voyage, as fans of Super Mario Odyssey will be well aware, and every episodic adventure series or road trip film owes its origins, in some small way, to Odysseus and his terrible navigation skills.

INTRODUCTION

CAMPING WARDROBE

We live in a time of constant connectivity; always in demand, always available at the click of a button. Why not ditch the strains of modern life and head off camping? Many of us feel drawn to the wilderness. Camping lets us escape the banality of everyday life and get back to the basics of cooking, exploring, breathing fresh air, just being. Camping is, and always will be, an adventure. There is an element of danger that will give you a buzz; unknown noises in the night, pitch darkness outside your little bubble of lamplight. Immersing yourself in the elements, you are at the mercy of nature. Rediscover your spark. Play, laugh, sing. Embrace your inner child and take time to enjoy the little things. Feel the cool air on your face when you unzip your tent first thing in the morning. Run your fingers through the dewy grass. Hear birds chatter as trees sway in the wind. Listen to the crackle of the campfire and watch as the embers dance in the starry night sky. Feel the warmth of your thick socks, woollen blanket and the heat of the fire on your face as night begins to fall. Rekindle relationships with the ones you love most. Work together to set up camp, build fires and cook over an open fire. Take your friends, your lover, your children, your dog – or just go alone. Either way, you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. Live the life humans are built for. We are wild animals who belong outdoors. This book will help you get back to nature, find the courage to break out of the norm and experience the world as it should be experienced. Look outside, the wilderness is calling you. So go on, pack up and go camping!

When you’re going on a camping trip you need to make sure you have the right kind of clothes to keep you comfortable and protected. But how to pick the right ones? Here are some top tips.

c Take some headgear – a baseball cap, a mid-brimmed hat or even a headscarf or buff can help protect your head from the sun.

John Muir

c Avoid denim – it absorbs heat and takes a long time to dry if it gets wet, so it’s not ideal camping gear. c If the weather will be warm, wear natural or moisture-wicking fabrics (such as cotton, linen, bamboo or polyester) to help increase the airflow to your skin, while loose-fitting or floaty outfits will help your skin stay cooler. c If you’re going camping in the winter or somewhere cold, bring double or triple of all your items of clothing. Always take one or two layers more than you think you’ll need to abate any fears about being chilly. c Layer up – for cold-weather camping, your base layers should be tight-fitting to your skin to trap heat, and moisture-wicking to prevent the absorption and retention of moisture. Your middle layers should be made of either wool or fleece. For your top layers, you need a coat or jacket that will provide warmth and act as a barrier against the rain and wind. c Remember that a lot of heat escapes from the extremities of your body, so don’t forget your hat, gloves, scarf/neck warmer and big, woolly socks in cold weather!

There are many slang words used on the railways, but what do the following mean?

Place a three-letter word in the spaces in each row to complete a six-letter word. When the grid is completed correctly, a new word in the shaded letters will be formed. This is something essential to the railways. What is it?

The main line (or mainline) has quite a few meanings in railway terminology but is generally used to describe the principal rail links between major cities and towns as opposed to branch and suburban lines. In this word ladder, change one letter at a time to turn “main” into “line”.

My first is in train but not in rail, My second is in hammer, not in nail. My third is in fast, not in speed, My fourth is in crave but never in greed. My fifth is in kilo, not in ton, While my whole helps make the trains run.

The Little Book of Zen A Beginner’s Guide to the Art of Zen

Astrid Carvel

ISBN: 978 1 80007 197 1 £7.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback June 2022 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Zen is a philosophy for living in a state of kindness, gratitude and awareness, teaching us to be present and to experience the world as it truly is. This book will guide you through the concept of Zen, revealing how you can apply its principles to your daily life and how you can reap the benefits to gain a greater sense of peace and calm.

Key Selling Points: • An approachable introduction to an increasingly popular topic, with a contemporary design to appeal to a wide audience. • Part of a new series of books of introductions to esoteric subjects. • A similar Summersdale title, The Little Book of Crystals (ISBN: 9781786859594), has sold over 15,000 copies. Chapter One:

MINDFUL EATING

A HISTORY OF ZEN Buddhism emerged around 2,500 years ago in ancient India and is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, a man who renounced his aristocratic background and became a Śramana – someone who abstains from worldly pleasures to pursue a higher spiritual purpose. Practising this austerity led Siddhartha to enlightenment – liberation from suffering and a true understanding of life. After this awakening, he taught his practice for over four decades. Today, we know Siddhartha Gautama as the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. A welcoming and inclusive philosophy, Buddhism travelled across eastern Asia and into China. A branch of Buddhism known as the Chan School developed in China and emphasised the practices of meditation (dhyãna), self-restraint and understanding the true nature of things. Chan teachings moved into Japan where practitioners pronounced ‘Chan’ (literally, ‘meditation’) as ‘Zen’. A practice evolving over centuries and nations, Zen draws its teachings from both Buddhism and Taoism, and has truly stood the test of time.

TRUE WISDOM IS KNOWING THAT YOU DON’T KNOW From Socrates and Confucius to Shakespeare and Lao Tzu, the advice to acknowledge our ignorance is found throughout history. When we think that we know something (or worse, everything), we close our minds to learning and to the truth. Wisdom is seeking differing viewpoints and staying curious.

10

66

AEating is something that we do every single day, but in our hectic lives, how often are we paying attention to what we’re munching on, how we prepared it or even where it came from? It’s all too easy to mindlessly eat lunch while working or to drink coffee and be surprised when the mug is empty. Practising mindfulness when you eat, drink and prepare food can do wonders for your mood and body. By staying aware through each bite, you can slow down, savour your food and tune into your stomach. So, how do you eat mindfully?

Enjoying food the Zen way Zen eating begins with the preparation. As you select the ingredients, acknowledge each one, consider the journey it has already been on to reach your plate, and what it will add to your meal. As you chop, how does the knife feel as it cuts? What sound do the ingredients make as they land in the pan? Inhale the scents of the meal as it cooks and try noting how they develop.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS

BE MORE MAMA QUILLA

Mama Quilla was known as the Moon Mother. She married Inti, the sun god, and together they ruled the skies as two of the principle Incan deities. Incans believed that lunar eclipses were the result of an animal attacking Mama Quilla. They feared that the animal – thought to be a jaguar or serpent – could kill or consume Mama Quilla and the world would be left in darkness. During lunar eclipses people would shout, throw things and make noise in an attempt to scare off the attacking animal and save Mama Quilla. Such was Mama Quilla’s beauty that a fox once fell in love with her. When he ascended into the sky Mama Quilla pressed him against her, creating the dark spots that can be seen on the moon. Mama Quilla was often portrayed in art as a large silver disc with human features. She was said to cry silver tears; it was these tears that gave the Inca their rich stores of silver.

Mama Quilla was known as a defender of women. You can embody the same warrior spirit in a non-violent way. There are many small ways to hold space for, uplift and protect your sisters. One way is to be aware of the dynamics of power in conversation, especially within institutional structures such as workplaces. Who is taking up the most space in the conversation and whose ideas are getting credited? If you notice a woman has been interrupted, can you direct conversation back to her? Can you affirm her in other, positive ways, such as being sure to credit her good ideas? Another way to bring Mama Quilla’s values into your life is to support the efforts of others in defending women. Donate money or time, should your own resources allow. You could even carry forth the spirit of Coya Raymi! Throw festivities with the women in your life; a big feast with all your sisters sounds divine.

POPULAR DEPICTIONS Quillarumiyoc is a unique archaeological site on a mountain range flanking a fertile valley in the province of Anta, Peru. Its name means ‘the place of the rock of the moon’, for reasons that are swiftly understandable. There is a large rock in the centre of the site engraved with a throne, dedicated to Mama Quilla. Koya Raymi Quilla was the tenth month of the Incan calendar. During this month the Incans held a festival known as Coya Raymi celebrating the spring equinox and Mama Quilla. Mama Quilla was a protector of women and a symbol of the divine feminine and it was women who were the hosts of Coya Raymi. Women of all rank and birth celebrated Coya Raymi and men attended at their invitation. The festival marked the start of the rains and the agricultural season, so was closely linked with fertility.

We live in a society designed for couples, constantly tempting singles to find their way back to a relationship, but a life of uninterrupted monogamy is a life that never benefits from the magnificent power of being alone. Welcome to Ambridge:

Willow Cottage ± In December 2018, the ultimate downsizing took place, as Brian and Jennifer Aldridge took a tenancy on Willow Cottage. This was not a happy move; it was forced on them owing to money troubles after Brian’s toxic contamination scandal. It would have taken a heart of stone not to feel for Jennifer as she left behind her huge and beloved state of the art kitchen. The cottage felt very small indeed, with just two bedrooms; as one was taken by Ruairi, there was nowhere for Jennifer to send Brian when he was just too exasperating. ± Relations with neighbours Roy and Kirsty got off on the wrong foot when Jenny accidentally cut the phone line in a frenzy of gardening, leaving them all without any internet. Kirsty was already unenthusiastic about having Brian for a neighbour, though as Tom had also been in the running for the tenancy, it was a rock and a hard place situation. ± The original plan was for the Aldridges to rent for six months, but clearly, at some point, they got used to the convenience of a smaller place as they are still there several years on. ± The first residents of Willow Cottage were Mike, Vicky and Bethany Tucker, and there’s a memorial apple tree for Mike’s late first wife, Betty, in the garden. Let’s hope Jennifer is more careful with her shears around that than she was with the phone line.

2018 The grim discovery of dead fish in the Am was swiftly traced back to contaminated land on Home Farm. It gradually came out that forty years earlier, Brian had allowed some dodgy geezers to dump toxic chemicals on his land, in return for payment. The enormous cleanup operation was so costly that Brian and Jenny were forced to sell the Home Farm family house, and downsize to the comparatively tiny Willow Cottage. Just the place for Brian to wait to hear if the Environment Agency’s court case against him would result in a custodial sentence (it didn’t, just a huge fine). 2019 This was a hard year for both Grundy boys. Ed was sacked from Home Farm for getting involved in driving stolen chemicals around the country, leading to him and Emma losing their dream house in Beechwood and splitting up. Meanwhile Will, barely able to cope after Nic’s death in 2018, feared he would lose custody of Poppy. This culminated in him threatening to shoot himself with his shotgun. Dad Eddie had just managed to talk him down when Ed came roaring in because he’d learned that Will had tried to kiss Emma. The gun went off accidentally, but all three Grundys lived to tell the tale. 2020 You’d think the big disaster in 2020 might have been obvious. But instead, at least for a few months, it was actually all about the huge explosion in the kitchen at Grey Gables, caused by Philip Moss’s builder, Blake. Lynda was seriously injured in the blast, and it was only thanks to Freddie Pargetter’s bravery in dragging her from the wreckage that she was taken to hospital in time. The fallout was wide-ranging, and not just for Lynda, as she had to learn to cope with life-changing burns and injuries. But it also brought out into the open Philip’s appalling business practices, ending in his arrest and conviction on modern slavery charges.

2021 While Covid-19 continued to disrupt and dismay the real world, in Ambridge the biggest drama came from Alice. Having managed to convince everyone for years that she was merely fond of a drink, her alcoholism finally became too obvious to ignore. She managed to kick the booze - we think - once she faced up to being pregnant, but alas, her abstinence didn’t last, and she threw a brick through the shop window when Susan wouldn’t sell her vodka. Having convinced herself that Christopher and new baby Martha would be better off without her, she moved in with her parents, bringing with her a clinking bag of bottles and a large supply of self-loathing.
