A five minute walk along the canal and you’re in Little Venice, an oasis of leafy calm where the Grand Union Canal meets the Regent’s Canal. Originally given its name by Robert Browning, Little Venice is now home to the delightful Waterside Café, and the excellent Warwick Castle pub, as well as attractions such as the Puppet Theatre Barge, the Cascade Floating Art Gallery and stunning Italianate architecture. It’s also a great starting point for a walk along the towpath. Head east and you will find yourself at Camden Lock, home of the famous Camden market and a stone’s throw from Regent’s Park and London Zoo.

Oxford Around an hour from Paddington is Oxford, one of England’s most famous University towns. The sheer beauty of Oxford’s colleges and riverside setting alone make it a great destination for a day-trip, not to mention the museums, literary links, film and TV locations, shopping, music and theatre. Enjoy candlelit evensong at a college chapel, watch a Shakespeare play in the park, or hire a punt and take to the water and then make the most of Oxford’s lively mix of restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars which give this historic city its cosmopolitan buzz.

Bath An hour and a half west of London lies Bath, a diverse city combining honey-coloured Georgian crescents, terraces and squares with healing waters bubbling from natural hot springs under Roman Baths. You can take a dip at the new state-ofthe-art Thermae Bath Spa Complex or enjoy a more historic afternoon sipping tea in the 18th century Pump Room next to Bath Abbey where Edgar, England’s first king was crowned back in 937AD. Alternatively, visit the Pulteney Bridge, lined with 250 year old shops, and the nearby riverside gardens.

Bristol Also around an hour and a half from Paddington is Bristol, best known for its naval heritage but increasingly popular for its vibrant nightlife and top class shopping. Step back in time with the city’s excellent range of museums and galleries, as well as Brunel’s SS Great Britain and John Cabot’s ship, the Matthew, two examples of Bristol’s wonderfully preserved living history. In the evening head down to the newly developed waterfront for a host of restaurants, bars and clubs or take advantage of the city’s thriving theatre scene.

Valleys of South Wales You may have a picture in your mind of the Valleys but it probably needs an update. A visit to the Valleys of today will spring some surprises. For a start you won’t see any coal mines unless they are heritage sites. What you will see are lakes and woodlands and a roller coaster landscape of hills dotted with friendly towns and villages. These hills are made for walking, cycling and exploring, you just don’t know what you’ll come across, from medieval castles and churches to World Heritage Sites. You may even spot the Tardis or an alien, as South Wales is the home of Dr Who and Torchwood.

The new Ebbw Valley rail link means that every corner of the valleys can be reached by train. So don’t leave it too long for that update and don’t just take our word for it as the Valleys were top of the ratings in the new Rough Guide to Wales.
