As you travel south across the Bay of Naples you see before you the unique, drama c outline of Capri, one of the most elegant and sought a er resorts. For centuries, Capri was the playground of Roman Emperors and Patricians, who built villas and undertook great engineering projects on the island. Augustus had a favourite seaside villa here and his successor Tiberius built what is now the best-preserved Roman Villa in Italy, Villa Jovis. Capri became popular with European ar sts and musicians, writers and other celebri es from the end of the 19thcentury, (Debussy, Somerset Maugham and many more). 01

brightly coloured robes, bikinis, bags, and Bermuda shorts all made in cool linen, gauze and co on. Time to relax. Overnight in this fabulous li le city in one of its hotels. day 6 – Positano, Amalfi coast A er breakfast departure to Amalfi and Ravello passing through Praiano, which, in the era of the Marine Republics, came under the rule of nearby Amalfi. It may be less famous than Amalfi, but Praiano, which hosts a series of important tradi onal fes vals and cultural events each year, is just as beau ful. A procession of a rac ve li le white houses lines the road leading from Praiano to the small towns of Furore and Conca dei Marini. The earliest men on of Furore dates back to 1752. The town, situated on extremely impervious terrain, is known for its cuisine which uses the local tomatoes, olive oil, potatoes and mountain herbs to great effect. Just beyond Furore, we come to Conca dei Marini, a fishing village known above all for the Gro a dello Smeraldo (Emerald Gro o). Arrival in the historic town of Amalfi an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Undisputed ruler of the seas in the 12th century, the town's gradual decline from power has in no way diminished the beauty of its monuments, such as the cathedral: a veritable gothic masterpiece complete with highly decora ve façade and impressive flight of steps. The immense cathedral doors, made in bronze, were realised in Constan nople in 1065. Whilst wandering through the picturesque lanes of Amalfi, lined with ny white co ages and shops, it is easy to catch a scent of the "sfusato" lemons which grow in abundance on this stretch of coast and are used to make the area's highly prized Limoncello liquor. From Amalfi you take the provincial highway, which leads to Ravello, a small town built above those of Maiori and Minori, on a high plain of the Dragone Valley. Breathtaking views of the Gulf of Salerno can be admired from the terraces of the elegant villas for which the town is famous, villas once chosen as preferred residence of many a famous personage, from J.F. Kennedy to Roberto Rossellini, from Federico Fellini to Winston Churchill. Richard Wagner was another great man to be seduced by the charm of Ravello, and it was here that he found the inspira on for much of his music. It is not surprising then, that the important Ravello Music Fes val is dedicated to the illustrious German composer. We suggest to have your lunch in Amalfi and the dinner in Ravello then overnight in one of its charming hotels. day 7 – Amalfi coast, Salerno, Naples Today once again on the SS163, a er Minori and Maiori passing through Capo d'Orso we come to the last town of the Amalfi Coast Vietri sul Mare, built in one of the most sheltered areas of the gulf of Salerno, is a town of Etruscan origin. A popular seaside holiday des na on, Vietri sul Mare is perhaps most famous for its produc on of handcra ed ceramics decorated by hand, displayed in the numerous workshops which line the streets of the town. Lunch in Maiori - Restaurant sugges on: Il Faro di Capo Orso, the restaurant, established in 1930, faces the splendid gulf. The tour con nues in direc on of Salerno to reach Naples. For centuries Capri was the playground of Roman Emperors and Patricians, who built villas and undertook great engineering projects on the island. Augustus had a favourite seaside villa here and his successor Tiberius built what is now the best preserved Roman Villa in Italy, Villa Jovis. From Amalfi we take the provincial highway which leads to Ravello, a small town built above those of Maiori and Minori, on a high plain of the Dragone Valley.
