MALAYBALAY City––The New People’s Army on Friday said the police have filed “trumped-up charges” against three suspects in the killing of Mayor Mario Okinlay of Impasugong, Bukidnon.

In a statement sent by Ariel Inda Magbanuag, spokesperson of the NPA South Central Bukidnon Command, the rebel group

identified the suspects as brothers Joven and Efren Yanggo and Ryan Daluniag.

C. de Oro police identifies one suspect in jewelry shop heist saturday, july 26, 2014

he Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) has identified at least one of the robbers who struck the M. Lhuillier jewelry store at SM City Cagayan de Oro last Tuesday evening.

City Councilor Ramon Tabor, chair of the city council on police, fire and public safety, said this development was reported by city police director Graciano Mijares during an executive meeting on Thursday.

Tabor, however, did not release the name of the

suspect but said it was the robber who was caught on surveillance camera wielding a KG9 machine pistol.

The committee meeting was also attended by the deputy city police director and precinct commanders as they tackled the spate of crime incidents in the past weeks especially holdup cases.

Sr. Supt. Graciano Mijares, director of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, has his hands full lately with the spate of crimes in the city. The biggest incident happened last Tuesday evening at a mall when robbers hit a jewelry store and carted away millions worth of jewelry.

-ooo FILIPINOS ARE BEING FED POISONED RICE: Our burning pre-occupation with the “disbursement acceleration program” or DAP of President Aquino is sidelining other more important issues in our collective lives as Filipinos whose staple food is rice. Did you know that the rice we have been eating after importing it from neighboring countries is arsenic and is therefore deadly poisonous?

A report is saying that arsenic-laden poisonous imported rice could result in serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease, brain damage and a lot more---diseases which are even now killing millions

No one seems to be in charge, no one seems to care, profit is all that is desired here.

As the National Food Authority, Department of Agriculture, and the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agriculture Modernization once again allowed the importation of around 400,000 metric tons of rice in a few days from now, this would mean ramming more poisoned food down the throats of helpless Filipinos.

Well, Filipinos dying from toxic rice is a good way to control population growth, if you ask me!

-ooo SUBSTITUTES FOR RICE: Where is the arsenic and deadly poison in imported rice coming from? The report bandied about by the People for Empowerment and Truth said it is from the fertilizers used in growing palay. The fertilizers appear to contain arsenic, a deadly poison which is being used, nevertheless, because it assures a bigger yield per hectare of palay.

So, if the Aquino government is not interested to stop the importation of toxic and poisoned rice, what can we, as a people, do? Stop eating imported rice, of course, except that, at this point, there is no more way of knowing which rice being sold in the market is imported or is lo-

cally-produced (sometimes, even locally-produced rice are similarly poisonous and arsenic-laced).

Then, maybe, we can resort to rice substitutes like camote (or sweet potato) or cassava, and homegrown corn (I emphasize “homegrown” because many corn producers are now steeped into the use of chemicals to hasten the growth of their produce). Also, we can perhaps eat more vegetables, but only those that we grow in our backyards, since many vendors are now using embalming fluid to make their products appear fresh.

-ooo EATING THE BODY AND DRINKING THE BLOOD OF JESUS: Of course, I realize that all of these suggestions could be puny, because somehow, all food products here in our country today seem to have been produced using one chemical or another, making them toxic and poisonous likewise, like pigs and fowl, and even fish and other marine products, being fed with chemicallyactive feeds.

AMBOANGA CITY – Abu Sayyaf gunmen released the last of 4 social workers they kidnapped in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, officials said Wednesday.

Sulu police chief, Senior Superintendent Abraham Orbita, said they recovered Roberto Saputalo near the village of Kagay in Talipao town late Tuesday.

“His safe release was due to the pressure of law enforcement operations by security sector and the local government,” Orbita told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

He said Saputalo was brought to the provincial hospital for a routine medical check-up before being reunited with his family.

Abu Sayyaf militants also freed recently two other social workers,

couple Nurhati and Mark Sicangco, in the village of Danag in Patikul town and were fetched by their relatives and brought to the house of the local vice mayor. It was unknown if ransoms were paid for their safe release.

The kidnappers had earlier freed another social worker Lerna Jurah.

The four social workers were conducting a houseto-house survey on the government’s anti-poverty program for the Department of Social Welfare and Development when armed men seized them in the village of Upper Sinumaan in Talipao town.

The Abu Sayyaf is still holding at least 10 kidnapped victims, including foreigners seized from the neighboring TawiTawi province and Sabah in Malaysia. (Mindanao Examiner)

AVAO CITY – An organization of tribal communities on Wednesday scored on the Aquino administration over “the escalating deaths and displacements of Lumads in the country because of large-scale mining projects, and of the implementation of counter insurgency program Oplan Bayanihan”.

The tribal organization, Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (KAMP), claimed that indigenous peoples “are

not spared of government brutality” over issues of extrajudicial killings, saying that “44 indigenous peoples have been killed by state

forces since 2010”.

Piya Macliing Malayao, spokesperson of KAMP, told Davao Today that tribal communities have their ancestral lands “forcibly grabbed through intimidation, harassments and threats due to sham development large-scale mining projects”.

Mlalayao said tribal communities lose 11 residents annually to killings allegedly done by government forces. “These are brutal killings of indigenous men, women, and children from

indigenous communities all over the Philippines.”

Malayao cited the “Capion Massacre” where a B’laan family brutally was killed on October 18, 2012, in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur by soldiers of the 27th Infantry Battalion. The Mindanao Alliance of Indigenous Peoples and Kusog sa Katawhang Lumad sa Mindanao (KALUMARAN) noted that the massacre “was intentional and not a result of an encounter as claimed by the Philippine army.”

Parents play vital role in child’s school performance

Home is a foundation of each child. It is where he first learn and attain knowledge from. He learn from his parents, siblings and the environment provided to him by his parents at home.

Parents play big role in their child’s mental growth.

Their interest as well as talents could be exposed once they will gain confidence and know their capabilities.

One task parents could do in the stage of development is to support and appreciate what their child could do.

Sparing time for their

children is responsibility of the parents because ignoring them will make them feel unimportant and eventually lose their interest in studying. They should have time to discuss the topics their children learned from school. It is even good that parents would ask their children daily such as on what did they gained from school in a particular day.

Parents should as well help them in their studies. If possible, talk to them about the how can they improve and make them aware of the importance of study

in their life, among others. Through this, children will start taking interest in their studies.Parents could also help in their children’s learning ability by providing them a supportive and educational environment at home. They should prevent things that can distract children from studying such as watching television during study time. Providing a quiet place for studying is also a good practice for it will help children to have concentration in their studies.

Teachers are considered responsible for instilling knowledge and values to students. In school, they are not just typical teachers, but parent as well.

Teachers are person who the students with during class hours. They know how a student behave and how did he do in his studies. They are the ones who took over the role of the parents once a child leaves his home and comes to school.

Thus, it is very important for parents to collaborate with teachers in matters concerning their child. May it be on study habits, behaviour and how to improve values and reprimand bad acts.

Charles-Freeman published online, parents benefit from being involved in their children’s education by getting ideas from school on how to support their children. It is good also that parents should build a positive relationship with our children’s teachers.

Freeman gave important tips to parents in accomplishing such task. These include making their interaction positive, preventing to be angry before getting the facts and avoiding going over their heads by consulting them first before going to authorities higher than them.

Freeman also reminded parents that most teachers are sensitive. Teaching is an intensely personal job.

Teachers are people who are paid to care about the thoughts and feelings of others.

Finally, good teachers welcome dialogue with parents, because it gives them a better understanding of their students. However, teachers must remember that parents have the right to expect timely notification regarding students’

academic performance and behaviour. In the parentteacher relationship, like most others, communication is the key.

House and school are places student considered as home. This should be the reason behind parents and teachers and other school authorities joining handin-hand to provide quality education to students.

Learning is a complex process that teachers should observe the quality of the subject, especially its social and emotional dynamics.

It is because it contributes to the learning and performance of the students.

As a matter of fact, various studies such as the one done by Carnegie Mellon University, an international research and education institution, found out that climate in the classroom affects the learning of the students.

The classroom climate regulates the circulation and construction of knowledge.

For instance, in a classroom, it is better that students will be participating in the class discussion in a manner that it is them who volunteers.

This makes the discussion rich and conversing since there are different perspectives being presented. In addition, students will not feel that their ideas are undervalued.

This climate could also affect meta-curricular and citizenship skills. For example is during group works.

In here, students can learn to work with students that

are different from them and produce a productive outcome. It is in the way that leadership skills, communication skills and conflict resolution will be developed.

Classroom climate engenders emotions that impact learning. In a productive class, emotions such as excitement for discovery, joy, satisfaction and pride at one’s accomplishments characterized learning experience that motivates students to further learning.

These emotions are positive.

Conversely, negative ones also exist that could possibly demotivate students in learning. These include fear, shame or embarrassment for being wrong, or boredom and apathy about the lesson.

Encouraging productive and effective learning to students is a kind of assessing and determining the classroom climate that greatly affects the process of absorbing lessons among students. The success of determining and applying appropriate climate would then result to a successful learning process.

“The Ligiw family may be the best example of how civilians fare in the warpath of Oplan Bayanihan.

The counter-insurgency scheme victimizes unarmed civilians, especially those critical of the government.”

“Not only does the Aquino administration violate indigenous peoples’ collective rights to land and resources, but expressly violate their individual civil and political rights. The tasks should partake of nation-building—small chores in the community that make up the big things in the nation.

One such task is trying out autonomy or self-governance in our community, a task we citizens have not been performing although dutybound to do so. The reason we haven’t done so, some say, has to do with a neglectful attitude or apathy. Others point to laziness, habitually relying on the few officials in the barangay hall to do the governing. ***** Yet we have long been mandated to govern ourselves, to make autonomy a reality in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity.

This principle requires that any task of government that can be done at a lower level should not be delegated to a higher level. It is the essence of autonomy or selfgovernance; but very few, if any, seem familiar with it—or, being used to rely on an oligarchic system, very few are comfortable with implementing it.

For example, the formulation of policies and plans for one’s community is supposed to be done in a participatory manner by the barangay constituents in conjunction with their local officials. But the officials don’t let them, preferring to do it by themselves.

The constituents aren’t even consulted. The officials don’t even bother to inform or invite them to hearings or meetings on the development planning process. ***** It has been like that since anybody can remember, such that even on rare times when they’re invited, they don’t bother to attend or participate.

This has had unfortunate effects. It has bred a cynical attitude. “What’s the use?”—people say, “they won’t listen to ideas or suggestions anyway!”

And it never seems to occur to the people that they can insist on participating; it’s their community, they’re the sovereign citizens, the officials are their public servants!

In fact, if they have no confidence in the officials, their public servants, they can replace them using their power of recall—taking back the power they delegated to them during the elections. ***** It takes only 50 signatures of the barangay’s constituents to trigger a recall initiative; but no one seems familiar with the procedure, or confident enough to initiate or spearhead it.

Meanwhile, without the people’s participation, no relevant policies or innovations are generated for the community and no comprehensive development plans are prepared.

This has been made plain where disaster after disaster

with any degree of preparedness.

Then since the officials are left to themselves, the plans and activities they do prepare are concerned with politically expedient programs and projects, which of course turn off the sensible constituents, deepening their apathy. ***** Thus, the official policy of autonomy for local governments starting with the barangays—our primar ylevel governments—still has to be realized after more than a generation since it was mandated. The people remain dependent on often incompetent or corrupt local officials who prefer things to remain as they are, meaning, under their total control.

For as long this situation prevails, the constitutional dictum that sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them will remain meaningless to our people.

And we shall never have a government of the people, by the people, or for the people!

Time to wake up and dust off your sovereignty, be assertive, and be in control of our republic!

The Bible has an answer. In 1 Corinthians 11, we are told that we should always remember Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, whenever we eat and drink.

We should always ask that the food we eat be transformed as the body of Jesus, and the drink we take be made as the blood of Jesus. This will give us a healthier and longer life.

Here is a part of 1 Corinthians 11: “So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord… For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep…”
