Illegal terminal THE Cagayan de Oro City Council’s committee on public utilities would look into complaints of the proliferation of illegal transport terminal at the city’s public markets here, City Councilor Roger Abaday said on Tuesday. The “habal-habal” motorcycles (a motorcycle used for conveying passengers) as a public transport is not sanctioned or recognized by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation and Franchising Board (LTFRB) because it jeopardizes the safety of passengers. Abaday said that the Agora West Bound Transport Operators/Drivers Association (AWTODA) has sought the intervention of the city council to stop the operation of “habalhabal” motorcycles in the public market.
Farmers congress BUTUAN City -- More than a thousand Agusan del Norte Agrarian-farmers and their cooperative leaders gathered to participate the kick-off of the month-long 26th Anniversary Celebration of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) which highlighted with a thanksgiving mass, motorcade and Farmers’ Congress last June 10, 2014 at Brgy. Luz Village covered court, in this city. The said event was organized by Federation of Agrarian Reform Community Cooperatives (FEDARCCO) who brought together farmers from different Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) in two cities and 11 municipalities in the province. During the congress, farmers elicited support from local government officials to address their clamor to further extend the CARP Extension with Reforms, which expires this year. They manifested in particular the bid to ensure that their standpoint to extend CARP for another years will be carried out to the House of Representatives, which is about to start the debate for further extension of CARP.

Shipping confab to push for more stringent rules T

HE Mindanao Shipping Conference slated today (June 18) at the Limketkai De Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City is set to tackle issues that would improve efficiency and eradicate corruption in the graft-ridden industry.
The whole-day conference will focus, among others, on key initiatives designed to streamline the operations and cut corruption in the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC). Customs deputy commissioner for Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group Atty. Agaton Teodoro Uvero will tackle the recently implemented ruling on accreditation for importers and customs brokers; impending adoption of the load port survey (preshipment inspection) on
containerized shipments; and plans for full computerization at the bureau as well as a host of other measures that the BOC will adopt in the 12 months. The other key points to be tackled include Mindanao’s shipping and trade prospects; the region’s role in sustaining Philippine economic growth; g ov e r n m e nt’s l o g i s t i c s strategies for Mindanao; and the impact of ASEAN economic integration on the transport sector. rules/PAGE 10

MINERGY Coal Corp. has chosen the US-based General Electric Corp. (GE) to provide the needed turbines for its planned 110-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental. Minergy Coal, a subsidiary of power provider Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co. (Cepalco), in a statement said the GE won the bid to provide the province’s second coal-power plant with two 55-MW steam turbines which are set to be delivered in the first quarter of 2017.
Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. and Toshiba Plant Systems & Services Corp., on the other hand, have been tapped to lead the plant’s construction. The deal also marks the return of GE to the Philippine market. In a statement, GE said that the project “aims to ease the power deficit in Mindanao to 68 MW by 2017.” The current balance is estimated at a shortage of 134 MW by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. turbines/PAGE 10

LOCAL rafting operators here rushed a set of safety measures to prevent a tragic repeat of last Friday’s boating accident that caused the death of a 26-year-old nurse from Bohol. before he made up his mind to suspend all whitewater rafting and kayaking tours along Cagayan de Oro River. “We opted not to suspend the whitewater rafting and kayaking operations because we will study the set of recommendations,” Moreno said. Meanwhile, the family of Aizza Calipusan Balbin brought her ashes back to
her hometown in Loboc, Bohol Monday afternoon. Balbin, a home-based nurse in Loboc town, came to Cagayan de Oro last Friday to experience the whitewater rafting adventure which Cagayan de Oro is famous for.
