GRETNA DAYS

July 24, 2019

Enjoy the community this weekend! O n behalf of the Gretna Days Foundation I want to encourage the entire community to participate in Gretna Days July 25 to 28. We have worked hard to make this year’s celebration the best ever! Sam’s Amusements Carnival returns this year. The carnival will run Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on Saturday. The carnival will be moving back to its previous location on Angus Street east of Highway 6. Parking will be available at Gretna High School, and handicapped parking will be available on Angus street just west of 204th street on the future Library site. The helicopter rides return this year and will move to 216th and Highway 6. The craft show returns this year to North Park. The Gretna Days Dance and Beer Garden takes place on Saturday night, and the community picnic that started it all is back on Sunday. The great news is that there are lots more

great events, and you can find them all on our website at www.GretnaDays.com. The members of our board work hard all year to make this a very special celebration. At a time when many small-town celebrations are on the decline, we are proud that ours continues to grow. While we have grown, we remain loyal to our roots. We continue to stress community and non-profits over commercialization. To highlight this, our weekend will wrap up with our community picnic on Sunday. This year we are excited to again provide a free picnic as well as games and rides for the kids during the picnic with the same low-cost price structure. Our fairly tale princesses will be joining us again on Sunday for the picnic. I want to thank all the businesses whose support makes Gretna Days possible. Please check out the list at GretnaDays.com and thank them for their support of the weekend. I also want to say a special thank you

to all the other members of the Gretna Days Foundation board of directors: Ron VanOeveren-vice president, Kevin Svec-treasurer, Kathy Wendlandt-secretary, Jerry Imig, Mark Hauptman, Bill Lewis and Hubble Reichert. I also want to thank new associate board members Jamie McGuire and Andrew Cox. Without all these people’s hard work, and lots of volunteer hours, this weekend would not be possible. Please join us at Gretna Days 2019. Come meet your neighbors and enjoy because this weekend is all about the community of Gretna! Brad Stauffer President Gretna Days Foundation

Time to celebrate! Gretna Days returns this weekend By Rachel George Suburban Newspapers Gretna Days returns for its 59th year this weekend. Though not many new events grace the annual celebration’s calendar this year, there are certainly some to highlight. The carnival is back in its old location on Angus Street, just east of Highway 6 near North Park. Attendance was down last year due to lower visibility at a different location that was used due to road construction. The annual Optimists Gretna Days BBQ will serve as a kickoff for festivities Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in Peterson Park. The Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce will announce its 2019 Citizen of the Year at 6 p.m. during the barbecue. Brats, Beer and Bags is a new community heritage festival. The event will feature food, beverages, a live polka band and the Gretna Optimists Club second annual cornhole tournament. Sponsored by the Optimists, St. Patrick’s Parish and

the Gretna Knights of Columbus, the Friday festival runs from 5 to 10 p.m. at 508 W. Angus Road in the lot just across the street from St. Patrick Catholic Church. Admission is free. Friday night will again feature a fireworks show, sponsored by the Nebraska Crossing Outlets. “We’re expecting another great show,” said Brad Stauffer, Gretna Days Foundation president. Featuring Peters Pyrotechnic Productions, fireworks will be shot around 9:45 p.m. from the same location as past years and can be seen throughout most of the city, as well as at North Park. A new addition last year, helicopter rides will return to this year’s event. The cost is $40 per person for rides, which will be offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lemon Fresh Day will return as the entertainment for the dance and beer garden on Saturday night. “We had a great time with them last year, so they’ll be back this year,” Stauffer said. The dance and beer garden runs from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday in Village Square at the corner of Highway 6 and Highway 370. Food trucks will be available at the event, open to adults age 21 and older. The wrap-up event, a community picnic held in Peterson Park, has new, fun things for children to do this year. The picnic runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rides and games (offered for 50 cents) will accompany live

music in the park through 2:30 p.m. “This is a great chance for people to come meet their neighbors and see each other,“ Stauffer said. “We always have a great crowd.” Stauffer encourages attendees to check out the schedule of events, which includes both Gretna Days events and business-sponsored events. “We try to have a variety of things for a lot of people and really just hope everybody has a lot of fun,” he said. “We’ve concentrated this year on trying to get everything fine-tuned and in place. There are some really neat things going on that people don’t always know about.” “Come out, meet your neighbors and have a good time. We do this so we can make something really special for the community to enjoy.”

A children’s run will be part of Saturday morning’s Resurrection Run, sponsored by Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Brats, Beer and Bags new this year By Rachel George Suburban Newspapers

A parade isn’t complete without clowns. A Shriners clown stops to greet children along the route of the Gretna Days Parade last year.

A large community heritage festival is the major new addition to this year’s Gretna Days programming. Set for Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Brats, Beer and Bags will take place at 508 W. Angus Road in the St. Patrick Catholic Church parking lot on the south side of Angus Road, directly across from the church. Hosted by St. Patrick’s Parish, Gretna Knights of Columbus and the Gretna Optimists Club, the free event will feature food, a live polka band and a cornhole or “bags” tournament. The idea originated with the Rev. Matt Gutowski. When the parish did not host its annual Irish festival dance this spring, the priest wondered whether another heritage festival of some sort could take its place. “I think the word heritage was very important to Father Matt,” said Greg Reitmeier, event organizer. “Having the polka band and the sausages and brats. The rest, in order to scale it to where it’s large enough, bringing in the Optimists and the food trucks, just made sense.” The Knights of Columbus will host a beer garden, along with soda and water. The Gretna

Optimists Club will serve sausages, brats and burgers, and A Taste of Naples food truck will serve up fun sausage-themed brick-oven pizzas. A polka band will play from 5:30 to 9 p.m. No entry fee will be charged. Attendees are encourage to bring their own lawn chair, as seating will not be provided. The second annual Optimists cornhole tournament — a major hit last year — will also be a major part of the event. Check-in begins at 5 p.m., and the tournament will begin at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $30 per team, and space is available for up to 64 teams. Registration is required and can be done online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/hkprt5f. The tournament moves to the festival from Peterson Park, where about 60 teams competed last year. “The beer garden adds a little more fun and variety to the bags tournament,” Reitmeier said. Boards will be set off to the side for children and other beer garden patrons to play on while the tournament is taking place. “We really want people to understand that this is a community festival,” Reitmeier said. “We have something for everybody. It’s a community festival, sponsored by St. Patrick’s Parish.”

It’s carnival time! By Rachel George Suburban Newspapers After testing out a new location last year, the Gretna Days carnival will return to its previous location on Angus Street, east of Highway 6 near North Park. “With visibility, the crowds were much better than we had last year, so we’re moving it back over there,” said Brad Stauffer, Gretna Days Foundation president. Sam’s Amusements will return to host the event. The carnival will be open Thursday and Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. All-you-can-ride wristbands will be available Thursday and Friday nights for $20 and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. for $20.
