Hospital employee raises $25K for Hinsdale’s Adventist Cancer Institute By LLOYD J. NELSON lnelson@shawmedia.com

HINSDALE — Colon cancer does not discriminate based on age, race or gender, a fact that Candice Washilewski knows all too well. “I see patients who’ve been diagnosed with colon cancer every day,” said Washilewski, who’s worked at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital for five years and is the director of medical surgical services. “There’s a family history, too. My father is a survivor and my grandfather had it. Raising awareness is near and dear to my heart.” That’s why when Washilewski saw a magazine article come across her desk

four years ago about a group dedicated to raising awareness for colon cancer, she knew she had to bring members to Illinois. “People come in, they have some symptoms that they don’t fully understand, that they can’t explain what it means,” Washilewski said. “Many patients I talked to didn’t have knowledge of who colon cancer affects. I thought, there’s got to be something bigger and better to get the word out there.” In 2010, Washilewski teamed up with the Colon Cancer Coalition out of Minneapolis to bring its 5K race to the Chicago area. “My goal was to raise money to give back to the community,” Washilewski said. “I wanted to provide educational awareness.”

“Yes, extremely excited. I love the Blackhawks.” Tricia Montgomery Hinsdale

In October 2012, she donated $25,000 of the proceeds from the Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk that took place at Montrose Harbor to the new Adventist Cancer Institute, which is in the planning process to be built in Hinsdale. “I was selective in where I wanted the money to go,” said Washilewski. “I wanted to make sure it was going toward educating patients properly on colon cancer awareness, and that funds were being distributed to patients that don’t have the funds to have a colonoscopy.” Last year’s race saw about 800 participants. “It continues to grow,” Washilewski said. “We’ve had repeat runners and each of the four years we’ve done this,

the number of participants increases. It’s exciting.” Of the money raised during the event, 75 percent goes back into the community and the remainder is used to fund more races and events. “It makes me feel like I’m making a difference in the lives of others,” Washilewski said. “It’s well worth it.” Her work in raising awareness and money for colon cancer hasn’t been ignored by officials at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. “Candice is an inspiring leader,” hospital CEO Lary Davis said in a statement. “We are awestruck and humbled by her commitment to giving back to the community.”

Darien sees U.S. Army Reserve change of command ceremony By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

Share your thoughts

DARIEN — There are about 12,000 soldiers west of the Mississippi River who rely on a general to lead them in humanitarian missions and tactical engineer support in foreign countries. The U.S. Army Reserve 416th Theater Engineer Command, headquartered in Darien, welcomed in a new general, Maj. Gen. David Conboy, on Saturday. Conboy is replacing outgoing commander, Brig. Gen. Charles Martin. There is a rotation of generals every two to three years. SFC Marisol Hernandez said the general in command usually travels to Darien once a month and looks over all the missions taking place. Panama is one of the major destinations for these humanitarian projects and will once again be the site this summer for the 416th Command. “What we do as an engineering command, depending on the mission, is mostly clearing roads, help build schoolhouses, hospitals and it’s involved with the overall mission of the Army Reserve,” Hernandez said. “It’s not just engineers, it’s engineers, medical and it’s a lot of Army Reserve commands that come together to provide that service to the locals.”

Have something to say on this topic? Comment on this story online at mysuburbanlife.com. Prior to leading the 416th Theater Engineer Command, Martin was the deputy commanding general, a position he assumed in July 2011. Martin returned from a year-long mobilization and deployment to Operation Enduring Freedom in September 2010. While in Afghanistan, he commanded the 372nd Engineer Brigade and Task Force Timberwolf. This included 5,000 soldiers, Seabees, airmen and civilians. Martin is from Little Rock, Ark. Conboy most recently served as deputy commanding general for the U.S. Army in the Republic of Korea. He has held several other command and staff positions in the 98th Division, including battalion and brigade commander and deputy chief of staff. He also previously served as the deputy program manager with facilities security forces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and as the adviser to the deputy chief of staff of the Iraqi Joint Forces. Conboy is from Buffalo, N.Y.

Oak Brook’s Triune Health Group awarded right to temporarily block health care law OAK BROOK — Oak Brook-based company Triune Health Group recently was awarded the right to temporarily block a requirement from the U.S. government mandating

that a for-profit company provide health care insurance to cover birth control. Judge Amy St. Eve granted the preliminary injunction. Company owners Christopher and Mary Anne Yep said the national health law’s requirement for contraceptive coverage for women violates their Roman Catholic beliefs, according to the Associated Press. Kevin Edward White, one of the attorneys representing Triune Health Group, told Suburban Life Media the company was pleased with the decision from the judge. “The plaintiffs look forward to pursuing their full day in court in order to vindicate their right to exercise freely their religious faith through the company,” White said. Court documents show the company’s current group health plan covers contraceptives, sterilization and abortion. The Yeps say that’s an error and they are seeking an employee insurance policy that excludes such coverage, according to the Associated Press.

POLICE REPORTS

Burr Ridge doctor sees early rise in local flu cases By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

BURR RIDGE — Flu season isn’t due to peak for a few weeks, but doctors across Illinois are reporting a higher number of cases now than in years past. Dr. David Beckmann of Burr Ridge, a family medicine physician with MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, said the clinic is seeing several rises in flu cases. “I think that the difference between this year compared to last year is that there seems to be more cases of the flu happening a bit earlier,” Beckmann said. “For example, the flu season generally peaks mid-January and February, but we’ve had a lot of cases even starting in December. It’s definitely something I’ve been seeing quite a bit of.” Beckmann said there was no specific reason as to why flu season peaked early this year, but said it can be that people are not getting vaccinated soon enough. And the No. 1 myth he hears from his patients is they won’t get a flu shot because they believe the shot will give them the flu. “I think the reason people say that is because they’ll come in and they’ll get a flu shot and then a week later or a few days later,

they’ll start to get sick,” he said. “The reality is, No. 1, the flu vaccination takes about two to three weeks to really build up immunity in your system to protect you, so if you got the flu shot and you got exposed to the flu a few days after the vaccination, or even a week after, you wouldn’t be protected against it. “Most people that get sick around the time they get the flu shot would’ve already gotten sick, so it would’ve just been a coincidence that they happen to get the vaccination around that time,” he said. Beckmann said the flu vaccination is an inactive virus, so it cannot infect patients. Blaming the weather or cold air on getting the flu also is a common myth Beckmann hears. “The reason there is that association is because the flu just generally tends to peak in the winter months. That’s just the time of the flu season,” he added. “With the winter months, and the fact that it’s colder, people are inside more often and can expose more people to the virus.” The best way for people to avoid the flu is to get a vaccination, Beckmann said, but other factors — such as hand washing, covering a cough and staying home when feeling flulike symptoms — are all ways to avoid either becoming ill or making others ill this winter.

Darien boy donates to charity for special 12th birthday By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

DARIEN — It’s one thing to be turning 12 years old on Dec. 12, 2012, but to make that birthday special for other kids you’ve never met is saying something. Twelve-year-old Nick Brown of Darien celebrated his golden birthday last month by not accepting any gifts. Instead, he donated all 34 of them — along with the money he received from family — to a local Relay For Life chapter of the American Cancer Society.

“I felt good that people could get toys who couldn’t get toys,” Nick said. “Now they could get them for Christmas.” One of the inspirations for Nick was his grandmother, who died six years ago from cancer. His aunt also is currently battling cancer for the fourth time. “I was pretty happy to give that stuff away,” Nick added about his birthday gifts. “I wanted to donate my things for my grandma who died of cancer.” Nick’s mom, Karen, said behavior like this is not uncommon for her son. “Our family really feels that giving back

is very important, so I’m just very happy he went in that direction,” she said. “He really likes helping other people and anytime that he can, he likes to help and volunteer, so it wasn’t something I was necessarily shocked about, but I was very proud of his decision.” For most 12 year olds, giving away presents, especially ones received for a birthday, would seem like a grudging task. For Nick though, his gift was seeing the faces of those who could truly appreciate the selfless gesture. “He was really happy,” his mother said. “When he went to donate them and saw the

agency and saw the impact that they make on so many people, then he was even more excited to see that work in action.” And the act of giving isn’t strange for the family as a whole, either. Each year, the Browns participate in Relay For Life, which they will continue again on June 7 at Downers Grove North High School. Nick is currently raising money for his team, a balance that is at $500. “This year’s Relay For Life is going to be an all-night walk-a-thon,” Nick said. “We’re basically going to go around and collect money for donations.”

Rotary Club presents Youth Merit Awards

Thumbs Up — The Hinsdale Humane Society and La Grange Public Library recently teamed up to provide children with a new reading experience. Bringing in some pups, the kids got to read some of their favorite books to dogs. This is a great example of community organizations partnering to benefit children. Thumbs Up — The Hinsdale Police Department recently presented Stickney resident Mark Kusper with a Saved by the Belt award. Kusper was involved in a car crash on Oct. 5 but survived because he was wearing his seat belt. “Mark Kusper is a living example that seat belts save lives,” said Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom. “Hopefully, this public notice will remind others in the community of the importance of wearing seat belts while traveling in motor vehicles.” Have any Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down ideas? COMMUNITY VOICE

T H U M B S U P/ T H U M B S D O W N

Community groups helped fund breast cancer outreach The Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Open Arms Breast Cancer Outreach Fund would like to thank our communities for a successful 2012 giving campaign. Your generosity meant that 40 uninsured women received free screening mammograms, services from which they might not have otherwise benefited. One of the 40 was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she received necessary testing, surgery and treatment through the help of Open Arms. None of this would have been possible without the support and generosity of local organizations, businesses and individuals. Our major campaign partners included the Oak Brook Park District, whose Pink 5k Walk/Run kicked off our campaign in May with a generous $7,000 donation; Hinsdale South and Central high schools; Midtown Athletic Club; and Howl at the Moon Chicago. Many local businesses also helped through events held in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Local physicians donated their services, and hundreds of community members gave vital support. We can’t say enough about our surrounding neighborhoods and their willingness to help. Not only have 40 gracious women been served, but our team was inspired by the generosity of our partners. Thank you to all involved. You made such a difference. We can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in 2013.

Six students who attend Hinsdale Central High School, Hinsdale Adventist Academy, St. Isaac’s Jogues and, for the first time, Notre Dame School received the Rotary Club of Hinsdale’s Youth Merit Award on Dec. 7. This award recognizes extraordinary high school and middle school students for services to their community and classmates, leadership qualities and academic achievements. The Rotary Club of Hinsdale honors students from local public and private schools at award ceremonies several times each school year. As a member of the Rotary Club of Hinsdale, I coordinate the program. Staff members at Hinsdale Central High School, Hinsdale Middle School, Clarendon Hills Middle School, Hinsdale Adventist Academy, St. Isaac Jogues and Notre Dame School nominate students. The award Cheri Vana winners attend a Rotary meeting, address the club members about their activities and interests, and receive a certificate to commemorate the occasion. Middle school students attend with their parents and invite an individual they consider their influential teacher. Last month’s teachers were J. Michael Carlos, Diane Sullivan and Rebecca Schmid. The following students earned the award: ■ Kathryn Noble Hopper, senior, Hinsdale Central High School, Hinsdale resident; ■ Rence Arroyo, eighth grade, Hinsdale Adventist Academy, Downers Grove resident; ■ Julianna Marzanna Bojko, eighth grade, Hinsdale Adventist Academy, Bolingbrook resident; ■ Tara Keane, eighth grade, St. Isaac Jogues, Hinsdale resident; ■ Kevin Kumar, eighth grade, St. Isaac Jogues, Darien resident; and ■ Max Tuttle, eighth grade, Notre Dame School, Clarendon Hills resident. “For more than two decades, the Rotary Club of Hinsdale has presented its Youth Merit Awards. These awards identify and honor middle and high school students who set the example for their contemporaries in academics, athletics, the arts and community service,” said President Rich Barton. “We are pleased to announce that not only will we continue honoring these special students, but that Hinsdale Bank and Trust has joined us as the community sponsor of this program. Both Rotary members and the bank staff are continually impressed and amazed with the achievements of these young members of our community.” The Rotary Club of Hinsdale meets weekly at 12:15 p.m. at the Community House in Hinsdale. The club, founded in 1959, consists of men and women of diverse backgrounds whose personal commitment to service ranges from support of local youth programs to assistance for the poor and sick across the globe. Aging Care Connections offers lecture series SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

Aging Care Connections of La Grange will offer three lectures, “The Aging Roadmap,” over the next three months that feature guest speakers from Burr Ridge and Oak Brook. The first lecture, “Physiology of Aging,” will present the many changes people experience as they age. Attendees will learn about the physiology of aging, as well as the social and emotional changes experienced during this life stage. During this session, attendees also will explore the difficult balance experienced in later years between coping with loss and utilizing later life as a time for new opportunities and personal growth. Those in attendance will gain an increased understanding of what older loved ones are experiencing, as well as what to anticipate as one ages. This lecture will take place at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at the First National Bank of La Grange Annex, 600 W. Burlington Ave., La Grange. The speakers will be Holly Miles, Cantata Adult Life Services, Brookfield, and Ilana Shure, Aging Resource Center manager with Aging Care. The second lecture, “Taking Charge of Your Health,” will discuss older adults’ ability to cope with a variety of chronic health conditions. Some of these conditions can

affect quality of life and everyday activities, yet traditional medicine may not be the sole solution to healthcare strategies for living with chronic illness. This lecture will focus on the need to know more about chronic disease selfmanagement and medical choice. Family members and older adults will learn about policy changes and opportunities for better care. The lecture will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 in the FNBLG Annex. Speakers will be Shay Jacobson, owner, Life Care Innovations, Inc., Burr Ridge, and Louise Starmann, director of social services, Aging Care. The third lecture is titled “Preparing for the Journey” and will discuss estate planning, advanced directives, financial and legal considerations and emotional and practical considerations for seniors and their children. A focus will be the seniors’ need to maintain control while defining their legacy. This lecture will take place at 2 p.m. March 27 in the FNBLG Annex. Joining are speakers Darcy Chamberlin, attorney, Oak Brook, and Ruth Folkening, caregiver specialist, Aging Care. To register for any of these free programs or for more information, contact Libby Kollar, First National Bank of La Grange, by calling 708-579-8628 or emailing ekollar@fnblg.com.

ootball players from Northern Illinois University weren’t the only locals at Miami’s Orange Bowl on the first day of the New Year. For instance, 17-year-old Darien resident and Hinsdale South High School student Jenna Rolowicz also made the trip to palm tree territory and got a glimpse of the spotlight by performing during the halftime show with singer Jake Owen. Rolowicz has trained at the Center for Dance in Westmont since 1999 when she was just 4 years old. The dance studio is owned and operated by Jan Forster, and her daughter, Ashley Forster, is a teacher there. Thanks to the mother-daughter pair and Jan Forster’s son, T.J., who helped make accommodations in Miami, Rolowicz had the chance to grab center stage and make memories she’ll never forget.

days before and spent two days rehearsing and setting formations.

FYI ... Who: Darien resident Jenna Rolowicz performed at the Orange Bowl’s halftime show last week More info: For information about the Center for Dance, visit cfdance.com. Information about the Orange Bowl can be found at orangebowl.org.

What kind of dance do you do? I do everything — ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and contemporary. My favorite is tap. How did you get the opportunity to perform at the Orange Bowl? Last year, we were at a competition and someone from the Heritage Center was

observing and they asked us if we would do it. Anyone from our studio was invited to go, but eight of us decided to go. How did you prepare for it? Cris Judd the choreographer sent us a video so we could all learn it beforehand, and then we all rehearsed together when we got there. There was like 461 people there dancing for the halftime show. We got there three

What was it like to be a part of the Orange Bowl? It was really overwhelming walking into the stadium. I didn’t expect there to be that many people there, but there was over 70,000 people. It was really cool. What was the most memorable thing about the trip? I’d say the best part was walking onto the field with all my friends. We all just got so excited because everyone was cheering and we all got so pumped for it. Everyone was so excited. It was a really good once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’ll never forget it. — ALLISON HORNE

Hinsdale Central guard Brian Owens breaks down court after a turnover during a 58-46 home win against Oswego East on Tuesday. Bill Ackerman — backerman@shawmedia.com

Positive outlook By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

Dating back to the fall season on the football field, Brian Owens has had his fill of heart-wrenching, close losses. Outcomes like Tuesday night are much more acceptable. Returning to the court after a 10-day layoff, Hinsdale Central kicked off 2013 with a 58-46 victory over Oswego East. “We’ve been practicing for a week and a half without a game,” Owens said. “It was nice to get back on the court. We’ve been playing really hard and we have to keep that up. We feel like we can make a run. All of the games we have lost have been so close and we are really focused on finishing games in

practice. Hopefully we can do that and get on a run.” On Tuesday, Rigas Pappas scored 17 points to lead the Red Devils while Matt Rafferty contributed 14 points, 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. Owens added nine points in the win, which improved Hinsdale

Central’s overall record to 7-5. That mark doesn’t tell the whole story as the Red Devils are just a few plays away from being nearly undefeated. Four of the their losses have come by a combined 12 points. Two last second-shots did Hinsdale Central in at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. And in West Suburban Silver action, the Red Devils lost in overtime to Naperville Central and by two points against conference-leader Oak Park-River Forest. “We are staying positive,” Owens said. “Coach (Nick Latorre) talks about that all the time. It is not like we are getting blown out in any game. We have to stay positive and really focus on conference right now. Tuesday was a nice tune-up.” The Red Devils (3-1 WSS) resume the

conference portion of their schedule on Friday when they travel to Lyons Township. A matchup with Glenbard North follows on Saturday at Downers Grove North as part of the M&M Winter Classic Shootout. “Any conference game is important, especially on the road,” said Hinsdale Central coach Nick Latorre. “We will have to play very well. LT is solid and they are playing well recently. We will focus on Friday and go from there.” It wouldn’t be a shock if both weekend games go down to the wire, and, if that’s the case, the Red Devils will be prepared. “It is about finishing games and making plays at the end,” Owens said, “and playing better defense in the second half. As seniors, we have to set the example.”

Red Devils win again, bury memory of last season By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

Having already notched more victories than last season, Hinsdale Central girls basketball kept up its winning ways Tuesday with a 6256 victory over New Trier. The Red Devils improved to 12-4 on the campaign. Last winter, the young and inexperienced squad went through some growing pains on the way to a 9-16 mark. “This group worked as hard or harder than any group I’ve had in Next game the offseason,” said Hinsdale Central Who: Hinsdale Central vs. coach Tom McKenna. “All seven of Proviso West our top players played AAU ball on What: West Suburban good teams.” Silver contest Tuesday’s non-conference matchWhen: 6 p.m. Friday up was the team’s first game since Where: Proviso West High wrapping up the Wheaton North holSchool, 4701 W. Harrison St., iday tournament on Dec. 29. Hinsdale Hillside Central went 2-2 in that event. “I’m really happy,” the coach said. “I divide the season into quarters. The first quarter was everything before Christmas and we went 9-2 in that span. In the Hinsdale South Thanksgiving tournament our only loss was to Naperville Central and they are 17-3. And then our other loss was to Benet and that was another close game. Both games could have gone either way. “The second part was the Christmas tournament. Our goal was to advance to the finals and we didn’t but we went 2-2. I’m very, very happy, this is a great group to work with.” The next stage for the Red Devils will focus on the West Suburban Silver conference where the team currently occupies the top spot in the standings with a perfect 6-0 mark. Road games against Proviso West and Glenbard West beckon this weekend. “Our goals are to win conference No. 1 and to win a regional; we are hosting a regional,” McKenna said. “But most of the rest of our conference schedule is on the road so we have no illusions about being the favorite. We have our work cut out for us, four of the final six games are on the road.”

PREP ROUNDUP Girls basketball HINSDALE SOUTH Proviso East had no answer for Toni Romiti Tuesday night in its West Suburban Gold conference game against the Hornets. The Hinsdale South senior guard scored 40 points to lead her team to a 60-44 victory over the Pirates. Romiti knocked down three three-pointers in the win, which upped the Hornets overall record to 8-7 and 6-1 in the league.

Tire problem? Q: I own a 2010 Toyota Camry. Last week the low-tire pressure light came on. A couple of days later it went out. What is the problem? A: When the temperature drops, so does tire pressure. Most vehicles equipped with a full-size spare tire also need to have the spare checked because the computer monitors the spare tire pressure.
