RIP, Ripley: Marengo shelter mourns gentle giant By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com

MARENGO – An unlikely local celebrity that captivated fans from Europe to Australia and turned attention to an unknown Marengo animal shelter died days before Christmas. Ripley, a 13- to 15-year-old Belgian draft horse, arrived at Destination Safe Haven in Marengo nearly three years ago and about 1,000 pounds underweight. His frame was frail and he suffered from an infection in his right hind leg that had been untreated for five years. Ripley’s battle with the infection, known as lymphangitis, ended Dec. 20. The horse refused to stand and walk around the shelter’s grounds along Busse Road in Marengo. With guidance from its veterinarian, the shelter euthanized Ripley. “He had not been in pain before. He ran around; he played,” said Deb Novak, president of Safe Haven. “But you could see it in his face. He was done. He wanted to be done.” After accepting Ripley in 2010, Novak and other volunteers steadily rehabilitated him and managed to contain the infection,

which routinely caused swelling, so that he wouldn’t feel pain. Known for his gentle spirit, Ripley was popular with people who visited the shelter, Novak said. Shelter staff developed pen pals, from horse owners in Belgium to schoolchildren in Australia, who wanted to be informed about Ripley’s time at Safe Haven. Novak credited Ripley with turning the small Marengo shelter into a recognizable organization. It currently treats horses, ponies, goats, pigs and even a rooster. Ripley was the first draft horse adopted by the shelter, which initially worried that such a large, powerful animal could break through Safe Haven’s fences. But the trusting horse never tested those boundaries, Novak said. A loving personality defined Ripley, who never was hostile toward anyone, despite neglect by his previous owners. Veterinary records showed that his former owners decided not to treat a wound that led to his lymphangitis, Novak said. With her voice quivering, Novak said Ripley’s presence will be difficult to replace at the shelter. “An absolute gentle giant,” Novak said. “We don’t really talk about it.”

Local referee, fan Elroy Fitzgerald dies By JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com

Elroy Fitzgerald, who officiated football, basketball and baseball for more than 50 years, died Sunday night at his home in Cary. He was 83. Fitzgerald was known all over McHenry County as an official and fan. Cary-Grove put the name of Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium on its gym about 10 years ago. Fitzgerald was still working junior high school basketball games, lower level football games and some varsity baseball games in the spring. He was scheduled to work an Algonquin MIddle School basketball game Monday afternoon. According to John Vito, a referee from Marengo, Fitzgerald was at his home Sunday with his daughters when he said he did not feel well and was going to bed. Vito said they heard him fall. Everywhere you went in McHenry County, people knew Fitzgerald. “Fitz was a historical figure for Cary-Grove,” C-G AD Jim Altendorf said. “He was a fixture for CaryGrove and a tremendous advocate for athletics. When you talk about what athletics mean to schools and how far they’ve come, it’s because of guys like Fitz. He’s a big reason why athletics have gone from being more or a rec thing to where they are today.” The wake will be held on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Cary. The funeral service will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Algonquin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Huntley District 158 fills Michael Skala’s seat By STEPHEN DiBENEDETTO sdibenedtto@shawmedia.com

HUNTLEY – The District 158 board this week unanimously selected a personal friend of Michael Skala to fill the seat vacated by the longtime board president. Michael Fleck, a Huntley attorney who has chaired Skala’s school board campaigns, was appointed in a special meeting Jan. 10 to finish the former president’s term, which ends in April. First elected to the board in 1997, Skala left in November after winning a seat on the McHenry County

Board. Fleck also was the only nonincumbent candidate to file for the April school board election. The district board ballot is uncontested. The appointment gives him an early start on the board. He previously served on the Huntley Library Board, the McHenry County Bar Association of Governors and the Centegra Foundation Board of Directors. “After I get my feet wet, I just want to contribute what I can to what the board has been trying to do already, which is providing top-notch education,” Fleck said.

HUNTLEY – Teachers and administrators at Huntley High School laid out an extensive list of needs Jan. 10 to expand crowded hallways and improve dilapidated athletic fields. The school at 13719 Harmony Road is approaching 3,000 students in an area where the population has boomed in the past decade. The 19-member Huntley 3,000 committee presented a wish list to the District 158 board during a meeting to guide the expansion. “We have to ensure and be proactive that our high school can be the best high school we can afford for the future,” Superintendent John Burkey said. “This committee’s task was very global. It was to re-imagine what Huntley High School should look like with 3,000 students.” The committee, in a nearly three-hour presentation, called for larger hallways, more parking, technologically equipped classrooms, a grander cafeteria and more flexible common areas. The large student population in the district’s elementary schools because of

Huntley’s rapid growth is forcing officials to plan the multimillion-dollar expansion. The high school is projected to exceed 3,000 students by 2019. The expansion will be paid for with a $39 million state construction grant the district was awarded last year and that was just paid. Huntley High currently has 2,500 students; an enrollment of 3,000 would make it larger than any other high school in the McHenry County area, including schools in the megasize District 300 in Carpentersville. The Huntley 3,000 committee worked for nearly 18 months on its list for the school. They showed board members pictures of sandwiched students in hallways and classrooms designed for 24 students that hold 30 students. A Huntley High senior talked about how he spends half of his 22-minute lunch period waiting to buy food in the cafeteria. The panel emphasized the need to build a 21st century school that is flexible enough to accommodate technology in the classroom and the school’s emerging blended-learning style. The style effectively ends classroom lectures by having students complete course

work online and outside of school, with face-to-face meetings with teachers during the week, said Anne Pasco, chair of the Blended Learning Department. “We are hampered by the structure,” Pasco told the board. “If we had a structure that could be more flexible and provide different uses throughout the day, we could then use that for different purposes.” The school’s athletic fields need immediate attention, the committee said. Many fields lack an irrigation system, and the school’s 1,300-seat football stadium now includes a large standing-room only section, Burkey said. Average attendance at football games is 2,500 people, the committee found. In the coming months, the district will work with an architect on designs for expansion, within the district’s projected $12 million budget for the renovation. But board members asked for more financial flexibility to start the process so that more school needs could be addressed. “If the discussion wavers to a couple million here and a couple million there based on other options, we as a board want to see that,” said Board President Don Drzal.

Huntley detective named county’s Officer of the Year By SARAH SUTSCHEK ssutschek@shawmedia.com

HUNTLEY — Det. Joe Willard of the Huntley Police Department has been named McHenry County’s Officer of the Year for his work on an alleged insurance scam and recovering a gun that had been sold to a gang member. In the first case, Willard spent months reviewing computer records and several file cabinets full of documents. He determined that a local insurance agent, Russell Palermo, had been taking payments from customers but not actually writing policies, Huntley Police Chief John Perkins said. As a result, the victims believed they had insurance but actually were not covered. More than 30 felony charges, as well

as multiple misdemeanor count, remain pending against Palermo. “Detective Joe Willard’s ability to give maximum effort to every detail of this complex case prevented many of our citizens from suffering serious financial problems,” Perkins said. “Even though they were scammed out of insurance premiums, the situations could have been much worse if there was an incident requiring an insurance claim.” The second case for which Willard was recognized involved a residential burglary during which cash and a .38 revolver had been stolen from a home. Willard developed information that the gun had been sold to a gang member from Elgin. He was able to work with detectives from the Elgin Police Department to locate the alleged gang member and confiscate

the gun, all within 48 hours of the original report. Four people ended up being charged in that case. Willard was given the second annual award from the McHenry County Chiefs of Police Association over the weekend at the Bull Valley Country Club. The other seven nominees were: Officer Amy Bucci, Algonquin police; Officers Kathy Eiring and Jason Williamson, Cary police; Officer Jason Draftz, Lake in the Hills police; Detectives Craig Esperance and Jennifer Garafol, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office; and Detective George Kopulos, Woodstock police. Last year, the award went to Woodstock police Officer Adam Schraw, who saved a 9-month-old’s life by clearing a hair clip that was obstructing the baby’s airway.
