Your Best Summer is One Word Away By Rebecca Hastings

S

ummer is the great playtime of the year. It’s like recess; a break from the responsibilities. Except when it’s not.

a webinar by Lysa Terkeurst. It was around the time she launched her book The Best Yes (which I highly recommend). Everything she said made sense and I found myself nodding along, but one thing stuck with me well beyond the webinar.

I find myself holding this idea that summer should be FANTASTIC and FUN and SUN. But there’s still laundry and cooking and vacuuming. The bills keep coming and the everyday-ness of life still happens.

She introduced the idea of choosing a word. When faced with the season ahead, she chose one word that would become her litmus test for all other things that season. I don’t remember what her word was, but I remember that it felt easy. It wasn’t one more thing on my endless lists. No, this idea brought freedom.

How can we enjoy summer for the respite that it is, while still living in the real world? I’m watching calendar days fly by, and I’m filled with equal parts excitement and dread. Our family routines will all change in just a few short weeks when spring becomes summer. And let’s not kid ourselves into thinking this starts on June 21. No, summer starts around here the moment the kids are done with school. And it’s not even the last day of school. It’s when school responsibilities give way to school fun days and homework dwindles as after dinner playtime extends. We’re close around here, and I’ve found one way that helps me get through it — and enjoy it. I was inspired a few years ago when I watched 6 seasons

I thought about it and realized that I couldn’t come up with one word, so I came up with three: family, books, and relax. These were the very things my family needed most that summer. Every time we had an opportunity to do something, an invitation, a request, a plea, I ran my litmus test: does it support family, books and relaxing? If the answer was yes, we ran to it. If the answer was no, it gave me permission to say it wasn’t right for us right now. I let go, and it felt great. Your words will be different. My words this year will be different (although I’m thinking that family one is sticking around!) I’m still picking my suburban family | subfam.com

words. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking: • family • peace • joy • fun • adventure • helpful

• quiet • busy • relaxed • home • water • outdoors

These are just a few ideas! Your summer can have whatever look you want it to. Choosing a word (or a few) that are the goals you have for this season will enable you to make choices that give you the very summer you want. Yes, there are things we still need to do. The laundry needs to get done (although maybe less if you spend long days in bathing suits). We still need to feed our people (but maybe relaxed means simple meals outside or more takeout).Work needs to happen, and the lawn still needs to be mowed. But when we make our choices through the lens we want to look through, it will be a lot more enjoyable. We get to choose how our summer goes. This test is not one more thing to do. It is the very thing that will free you to let go so you can create your best summer ever! What words will you use to create your best summer ever? May/June 2019

M

om, I’m bored!” Those three words strung together can trigger waves of anxiety and eye-rolls in any parent, especially during the summer months when a child’s daily schedule is wide open while her parent’s is cresting to its fullest. If summer camp isn’t a feasible option, your patience may have peaked to the point where you’re tempted to jump ship and let the kids get glassy-eyed for hours in front of their screen of choice. If you’re looking for another option, look no further than to your own backyard for enjoyable and affordable ways to have summer fun. Here are 6 budget-friendly activities to keep your kids busy having a blast in your own yard. 1. Set up an obstacle course. Backyard obstacle courses are loads of fun, can be easy or elaborate depending on the age of the child, and can consist entirely of objects you already own. For younger children, an obstacle course can include: • Hula hoops to hop in and out of • Buckets to weave around slalom-style • Yoga mats spread on the grass for forward rolls

14 out & about

suburban family | subfam.com

• A low balance beam to walk across • Balls to toss into laundry baskets • An inflatable pool to jump into at the end of the course For older kids, a more challenging course can consist of: • Folding tables to crawl under • Planters to jump over • Water balloons to transport by spoon without dropping • Balls to toss into boxes of decreasing size • A hose to knock down items lined up on a table • Newspaper pages to place underfoot with each step while racing across the yard toward the finish line 2. Channel a classic game of lawn Twister. To make a grass-version of this classic game, purchase cans of marking paint in red, blue, yellow, and green from your local hardware store. To create the game grid: • Use a plate to trace a “Twister dot” on a piece of cardboard or poster board. Trace a small circle for the smaller hands and feet of young children or a large circle for older players. Cut the circle out to create a hole in the cardboard or poster board and, voila, you have a Twister dot template. • Place the cardboard or poster board template on the grass and spray paint through the hole in the template to create rows of dots. Be sure to place the dots close enough so that chilMay/June 2019

dren can easily reach over from dot to dot, and be sure the game grid area is large enough to accommodate the number of children playing. • Once the dots are all painted onto the grass, grab your (indoor) Twister spinner and start playing! If you don’t have a Twister spinner, write down each of the four directions (left hand, right hand, left foot, or right foot) for each dot colour on separate index cards or slips of paper. For example, one card will read,“Right hand. Green.” • Call out each direction and watch players stretch, reach, and balance as they strive to be the last kid standing on your lawn Twister board! 3. Make a slippery splash pad. Have your kids change into their bathing suits for some slipping and sliding with this giggle-inducing activity. All you’ll need is a large tarp and a hose. Lay the tarp down in an area with plenty of space around all sides of the tarp. Run the hose on the tarp until it’s soaked and slippery. Keep the hose running as your kids splash on the tarp and slide on it barefoot or Superman-style. Give the kids boogie boards if you have them for added slippery fun. 4. Throw a fiesta with water balloon piñatas. Your kids can keep their bathing suits on for this wet and wild game of water balloon piñatas. For this activity, you’ll need water balloons, string, a strong piece of rope, and a plastic bat. • Tie the rope between two trees or two other sturdy structures • Fill the water balloons with water, tie into a knot, and then tie a string around each knot • Tie several water balloons to the rope using the attached strings so that the balloons hang overhead like a row of piñatas • Have each child take a turn swinging the plastic bat to see how many balloons she can burst in 30 seconds. Use a blindfold with older children to further test their skill.

5. Blast the sprinklers. For more water play, your kids can stay cool in this at-home spray park, courtesy of your lawn sprinklers. If you have an oscillating sprinkler system, scatter water-friendly toys around the sprinkler unit for each child to scoop up before getting soaked by the swinging water stream. 6. Get creative with colorful water art. Bring out your child’s inner artist with this game of water squirter art. Fill water squirters with water mixed with food dye, using a different colour for each water squirter. Set down sheets of paper on the grass or tape sheets of paper onto trees and enjoy watching your kids paint colorful masterpieces. Get your kids to release their Judo-grip on their tablets or phones this summer by turning your backyard into an activity-filled playland, all without breaking the bank! May/June 2019

Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines suggesting daily limits on screen time for different age groups. “It’s the responsibility of the parents to get control of this and guide their children, from a young age, on the positives and negatives of screen time,” says Christine Kyriakakos Martin (www.youvegotthisparenting.com), an early education expert and author of You’ve Got This! Keys To Effective Parenting For The Early Years. “Parents can often think it’s acceptable for a young child to spend a couple hours with an iPad, but the type of education the iPad game is providing isn’t always the type of learning most needed at that stage.” Martin has suggestions for how parents can manage screen time and decrease a child’s risk for screen-related health or developmental problems:

he digital age has given new generations of parents something extra to worry about:

ally agree that spending inordinate amounts of time immersed in computers, smartphones or social media can negatively impact a child’s developing mind and body. A screen time study published recently in JAMA Pediatrics found a link between excessive screen time and later development milestones.

Distinguish screen time from play time. Play is a fundamental learning tool for young children, but parents, Martin says, should not think of screens as toys for play time. “When screen time is limited and separated from other types of play, parents show their children the importance of setting boundaries, using their imaginations, and being active.” Get involved. Parents who engage with their children about on-screen activities can help them increase their communication skills and teach them how to navigate digital media. “Parents can talk with their children about the videos they watch and games they play like they would discuss characters and plotlines in a book,” Martin says. “When there is parental engagement like this, a child’s vocabulary and literacy skills develop and family communication gets stronger.” Make mealtimes screen-free. “Eliminate screens from the meal table, including when you’re out at a restaurant,” Martin says. “While it can be tempting to pack the iPads to have some adult conversation while you’re out to eat, doing this doesn’t teach your children about manners, properly engaging in conversation, or being mindful of other patrons.” Set a good example. It will be harder for a child to disengage from screens if his or her parents are consistently looking down at their own phones or tablets. “Remember,” Martin says, “your children learn from your example. If they see you spending a lot of time with your face in front of a screen, they’ll also want to use technology at the same time. Try your best to save your time on social media for your lunch break, during nap time, or after your children have gone to bed.” “Learning how to use screens, verbally communicate or socially interact will have a positive impact on language skills, relationships and overall health,” Martin says. “Spending time with their parents, learning through play is what young children need and want.”

Where to Find Affordable and Accessible Lakefront Living Within 3 Hours Lakefront Homes Average $250,000 to $350,000 After growing up in Wisconsin and playing football for the University of Wisconsin, Brad and his brother Pat Pavloski became familiar with the lakefront hotspots for families. After co-founding an international telecom company in Tokyo and eventually selling it, the brothers came back to their roots. When land became available around Castle Rock Lake, they jumped on the opportunity to make lakefront living more affordable and accessible. “Our lakefront properties are hours closer than places in Northern Wisconsin,” Brad Pavloski said. “We understand how important making memories are with your family, so we’re here to help people find their dream vacation home that will be enjoyed yearround.” Through their company, CastleRockLake. com LLC, they have helped hundreds of families from around Chicago and Rockford, Ill., get the best of both worlds: lots have a private sand beach on a private lake with a seasonal boat slip on nearby Castle Rock Lake. In fact, both brothers live on these private lakes. In addition, they offer properties directly on Castle Rock Lake. “Finding a vacation spot that dad, mom and the kids would enjoy was difficult,” Homebuyer, former University of Wisconsin football teammate and Batavia, Ill., native Mike Tams said. “We found our dream location at Castle Rock Lake. It is convenient to Chicago and reasonably priced. You will not find a nicer lake or better waterfront developments. I have known the developers for over 20 years. Golf Links & Tips Cantigny Golf

Patrick Lynch, Head Professional 27w270 Mack Road Wheaton 630-260-8197 www.cantignygolf.com Youth Golf: Affordable, Convenient and Fun! Not long ago, golf was “the expensive sport” when compared with other youth sports.

The price of golf clubs versus a soccer ball or equipment in other sports was a big difference, and the cost of green fees and instruction made golf inaccessible for many kids. As a parent of three, I can assure you that golf has now become a very affordable option. You can purchase a quality set of youth clubs for as little as $100, and many local golf courses are offering reasonable rates for juniors to play. For example, at Cantigny Youth

Links, $225 buys a full season pass! Group lessons are economical as well, at Cantigny and elsewhere. Other youth sports these days command a larger commitment in both money and time. With golf, parents can determine what is convenient to their schedule and can pick and choose when to practice or play. Best of all, kids learn a game they can play their whole life.

Choice of club can vary anywhere from a five-iron for a shot across the green all the way to a sand wedge, dependent on the length the ball needs to run. I often use the seven-iron for longer chips…the pitching wedge if the hole is closer. You certainly want to pick a club that allows you to land the ball on the green…not in the fringe. The stroke is fairly short…just enough to get the ball on the green and rolling. You should experiment with different clubs to get a good feel. Play the 30 out & about

ball back off your right foot and keep the left wrist leading for solid contact. Use this method for consistent play around the green…only use the “flop shot” with the sand wedge when extreme height is necessary to stop the ball quickly. Good luck saving strokes in 2019! YOU ONLY NEED A FEW CLUBS: You’re allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in your bag, but you won’t need nearly that many when you’re first learning. Instead, start with a driver, a putter, a sand wedge and supplement those with a 6-iron, an 8-iron, a pitching wedge, and a fairway wood or hybrid with 18-21 degrees of loft. These are the clubs that are the most forgiving and easiest to get the ball airborne.

THE PRESERVE @ OAK MEADOWS,

My advice to Jim Randall, and anyone else inclined to teach the game while playing is ... don’t! Leave the lessons to the people who know how to do it, the pros, at the place where it should be done, the practice range. Enjoy the game and fix the problems later. I also told Jim to take his wife ... to a good restaurant. She deserved it.

Addison, IL 60101 Peter Longo, PGA Life Member Teaching professional at The Preserve 630-616-1515 LongoGOlfShow@aol.com www.peterlongogolfshow.com TAKE A LESSON, AT THE RANGE! As a golf professional, I know the value of lessons, as much as a doctor knows the value of medicine. However, too many amateur golfers are confining their lesson activity while they are playing an actual game. The golf course is no place to be giving or taking lessons. Even if the advice is good, the tension of the game, the fear of holding up players behind and the lack of practice all add pressure and negativity to the enjoyment of the game. Jim Randall, a student of mine, tried to teach his wife on the course. “She’s so bad, she hits the ball three times before I can move the cart. Take her, please.” At my first lesson with Mary Randall she confessed that Jim’s constant nagging and “how to” tips made her nervous and desperate. She couldn’t concentrate nor enjoy their rounds together.

By playing from the same tees and using clubs that will travel the same distance as your child’s stroke, you will get to spend quality time during the round and create a realistic goal for your child of hitting shots further than you. One of my favorite activities is to form teams among family members and create competitions. The ultimate benefit is improvement in putting and short game which account for nearly 70% of the shots taken in a normal round of golf. Golf Center Des Plaines

Rob Hutzler, PGA Professional Certified Personal Coach GolfTec - Des Plaines 353 N. River Road, Des Plaines 847-803-GOLF www.GolfCenterDesPlaines.com Properly Fit Clubs Are Just As Important For Junior Golfers Properly fit equipment is a critical component in the development of all junior golfers. The variety of clubs available today makes this process much easier than 20 or 30 years ago when juniors were given their parents old clubs. Juniors playing with cut-down or clubs that are clearly too long for them will result in frustration, poor swing mechanics, and the start of bad habits. Clubs that are cut-down will be improperly balanced or much too heavy to swing properly. Grips that are too big will also make it difficult to swing properly and hit the ball at the target. A certified fitter will make sure they’re using the proper clubs for their age and height. Junior clubs are available based on age and height. A set of junior clubs will only last at most a couple seasons before they grow into the next set. A junior set consists of 3–7 clubs, and is relatively inexpensive compared to an adult set. Some companies offer a trade-in value as the child outgrows their current clubs and needs the next size up. Taking the step of seeing a PGA Professional or certified fitter will result in a happy and successful golfer. May/June 2019

celebrate!

By Malia Jacobson

I

t happens all too fast: one minute, you’re wiping up the crumbs from the first-birthday cake smash. A few whirlwind years later, your precocious preschooler brings home a stack of birthday party invitations penned by parents you’ve never met. Party evites invade your inbox and group texts detailing last-minute party plans zip back and forth with the urgency of national security missives. Your child has hit the birthday party scene, and it’s hoppin’. Given that kid birthday parties are big business—the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions reports the kids’ party venues charge an average of $370 per party; add in decorations, food, and favors, and costs can easily top $500—it’s understandable that parents want to get it right. That’s easier said than done, though. Parents 34 celebrate!

bring different expectations, cultural norms, communication styles, and budgets into the party planning process, and etiquette can fall through the cracks, says Jacqueline Whitmore, an internationally-recognized etiquette expert, author and founder of The Protocol School of Palm Beach. And the increasingly paperless world of party communications leaves room for etiquette missteps; per online stationer Punchbowl, 73 percent of parents prefer to send online invitations. While there’s no formula for the “perfect” party, avoiding these party planning pitfalls keeps the focus where it belongs—celebrating your not-so-little-one’s big day. RSVP reframe In today’s uber-connected world, responding to party invites has never been easier; email, texting, or simply checking a box on a webbased evite takes all of 30 seconds. But these days, many guests mistakenly consider RSVPs optional, says Whitmore. This leaves the party-planning parents to guestimate the guest list, or track down and re-contact all invited guests’ parents about whether they’ll attend. And nobody has time for that. “It gets frustrating when people don’t reply at all, or respond ‘maybe’ but don’t update as to whether they’ll come or not,” says Raina Johnson, a Tacoma mom of three boys. suburban family | subfam.com

“If you’re fortunate enough to be invited to party, respond as quickly as possible,” Whitmore says. Whether you can or can’t attend, respond to invites—including evites and text invites—within a week at the most. And if plans change and your child can’t attend, contact the host ASAP so the food, activities, and party favors earmarked for your child can be repurposed. Tiny glitterati A top parental pet peeve: Supersized (or super spendy) soirees that make your casual neighborhood cupcake-and-juice fete look ho-hum by comparison. “I’m tired of overthe-top parties that make my kiddos wonder why we don't spend $5 grand on their birthday,” says Eagle, Idaho mom of three Lynne Williams. “We went to one a few years ago that had two bouncy houses, hired entertainment, catered food, full bar, craft projects.... all for a three year old.” While the size of the budget and guest list are personal preferences, you can skip some stress (and save green) by focusing on party details your child will notice and remember. And consider this: it will be hard to impress a teenager who’s received mega-parties since babyhood. One way to dial down the crazy is to only include activities and entertainment that can reasonably fit into a 90-minute party—roughly the party attention span of a kindergartener— with enough schedule space for cake and reMay/June 2019

laxed socializing. That means you don’t need the bounce house, band, slip n’ slide, pizzamaking station, and petting zoo. One to two “main event” activities, with a quieter option like crafting or coloring for overstimulated kiddos, is festive without feeling forced. Scale back on decorations, too, says mom of two Yin Chang, co-owner of L3 Academy, a Montclair, New Jersey learning center that hosts STEM birthday parties. “Kids either completely ignore decorations, or they look at them for five seconds.” Skip the sibs As soon as invitations go out, the “siblings welcome?” queries come in.And some parents will show up with their entire brood in tow. This stressful scenario stretches party budgets and party hosts’ patience, because some parties are simply more enjoyable on a smaller scale. “We do small birthday parties at our house, and if child comes with a sibling or two and both parents, the party triples in size for food, gift bags, and activities,” Gretchen Coulson Smith, Tacoma mom of two, says. Party activities aren’t always well-suited to younger sibs, says Chang. Her parties can involve experiments with chemicals; though not toxic or dangerous, they’re not designed for

toddlers. “We put a minimum age on those party invitations, for safety reasons,” she ways. Avoid this sticky subject by clearly addressing paper invitation to the invited child, says Whitmore. This gets trickier for evites, which may not allow senders to specific which child the invite is for. In those cases, a quick email or text with “We hope Ameila can attend Jake’s party!” can spare an awkward back-and-forth later on. On the other hand, “the more the merrier” parents can let guests know that sibs can attend with a simple “siblings welcome!” note on the invitation. When you’re not sure— because of limited space at your venue, for example—write “please inquire about siblings” to head off sibling surprises. And if sibs aren’t on the guest list, consider making the party a “drop-off ” celebration (also, of course, indicated on the invitation); parents with young kids may not be able to stay for the party if they need to keep their other children at home. Goodie bags gone bad Goodie bags filled with dollar-store junk irk Amy Hussey, a Tenino mom of two. “Keep it consumable so it doesn’t add to the clutter!” Or skip goodie bags entirely—most families won’t miss them. If you just bear to abandon giveaways, consider a copy of the birthday child’s favorite book, a packet of seeds or a bulb to plant, a single can of Play-doh, crayons and small notepad, or a take-home craft like a hair barrette or a bookmark. A party favor that fosters family time or quiet play after the excitement of a party will be welcomed by guests’ parents— who may be inspired to reciprocate when their child’s party rolls around. Festive fetes for every guest If your child has special needs or special dietary restrictions, let the party host know when you RSVP. When you’re the host, ask parents of children with special needs how you can make their child more comfortable at the party; if you’re not sure which children may need accommodations or special foods, check with your child’s teacher. Parents of children with restricted diets often assume that party food will be off-limits to their child, and may bring their own; if party fare will be allergen-free, let parents know on the invitation. Party locales that tend to be accessible for guests with mobility limitations include children’s museums, bookstores (some have party rooms or meeting rooms), libraries, craft stores, and accessible parks and playgrounds; a simple park outing, arts-and-crafts party, or story time celebration makes for an manageable soiree that’s enjoyable for all.

Which type of block party will work best in your neighborhood? Try not to go overboard, it can make people feel the event is too much work…Keep it Simple!

lock parties are a terrific way to get together and meet people in your community. If the party will be on public lands, an application or permit may be required. Your city officials can provide the orange cones or caution tape to mark where the “boundaries” are for safety. Make sure that you ask others to participate in the fun of helping to set up and tear down May/June 2019

the event. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors better. There’s no need for formal invitations. Just print and distribute the flyer with all the details and slip them under doors of all your neighbors doors 4 to 5 weeks prior. Fun and Games Provide simple age appropriate activities for kids to do while parents/adults visit. Some suggestions to consider: set up and supervise a bouncy house, obstacle course, sprinkler or slip-n-slide, chalk drawing, Bozo buckets and bean bag games. Provide some background music or a karaoke machine to help break the ice. Encourage the talent in your neighborhood to come forward to entertain the troops such as musicians, magicians. suburban family | subfam.com

• Barbecues - organizers purchase all that is needed and neighbors provide the money; everyone brings his or her own meat. • Picnics -- everyone brings their own meal; • Pot luck - everyone brings one dish; • Catered -- everyone shares the cost and the food is purchased. • Ask families to bring their own beverages (BYOB) for adults and kids. Set up a table for condiments and paper products. Ask people to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, and a tent if they prefer. You’re going to be having so much fun, your kids will want to stay up playing after the sun goes down. So make sure you can still see where the kids are by passing out glow sticks or just have a basket of cheap flashlights for the kids (and fun-loving grown-ups) for playing flashlight tag. celebrate! 41

ummer shorts and tees purchased, washed and folded neatly in the duffle bag. Bug spray, cell phone charger and the one allowable stuffed animal all packed. Immunization card submitted. Survival snacks tucked away. We were ready for her first week away from home on her own. My daughter was ten years old and headed to summer pre-teen church camp. We were pulling into the parking lot to meet the van when suddenly a speeding driver hit my left driver door trying to pass us, obviously missing my blinker signal when I was turning left into the church parking lot. The police were called. Reports were taken but no one was hurt even though I was stunned. 42 active kids

By Laura Lyles Reagan I didn’t get to give her the proper good-bye I had hoped for. I didn’t get to impart a week’s worth of wisdom about how girls could triangulate, form clicks and leave somebody out. I didn’t get to emphasize that even though there was limited cell phone contact that I would write her every day on the camp email. We had been so busy gathering everything on her “to pack” list and evaluating the “don’t bring” list that I really hadn’t taken care of the emotional part, the potential separation anxiety. My daughter was a little worried about me with the accident but when I told her I was fine, she gathered her sleeping bag, pillows and duffle bag, hugged me and headed happily to the van bound for her summer adventure. Reflecting later, I saw the separation anxiety was all mine. She had a wonderful time, even though there was a “mean girl” incident or two. She learned to stand up for herself or let go of issues that were not that important to her (a valuable life lesson). When she saw other kids getting email and she didn’t have any the first two days, she quickly figured out the system and started corresponding with me. I had the camp’s emergency contact numbers if there were any real need to communicate quickly with her. All was truly well, whether I felt like it or not. suburban family | subfam.com

As school teachers, nurses at doctor’s offices or summer camp counselors will tell you, most often the parents are the source of anxiety, not the kids themselves. Separation anxiety in the first year of a baby’s life and then later as preschoolers is a normal part of childhood development. I confess, separation anxiety about a ten year old off to summer camp is all about the parent. In hopes of helping anxious mom’s everywhere and in a therapeutic desire to share what I know now and proverbially wish someone would have shared with me then, here are some helpful tips, mom to mom. 1. Prepare an emergency communication plan. Be careful not to alarm your child. Simply tell her that you have emergency numbers for the camp and you will contact her if you need to for an emergency. 2. Talk about communication expectations. Review the camps policies. Most camps allow family email. Some don’t allow cell phones or only allow them at specified times.Tell her you will be happy to receive any email and you will likely email her but tell her also that you want her to have a good time and understand that she may get busy. May/June 2019

3. Trust your parenting. Communicate confidence about your child’s ability to solve social problems. You have raised a respectful child. Trust that your parenting is being internalized. Trust that any social lessons she is learning will help prepare her for the real world. For example, working with people we don’t like and finding a way to get along is a valuable life skill at any age.

Be sure to plan and execute a plan to have some adult fun while your child is away. This is a great time to do things you don’t normally get to do when there is a heavier family schedule. It is also a great time while one child is away to focus special attention on another child or children. 5. Give a positive good bye message. Short loving good byes are best. Packing For Camp W

hen it comes time to pack for camp, let the kids do the work! Kids need to know what they are taking to camp. Make sure your kid can handle the bag himself. Choose a bag your kid can carry, roll or drag by himself. I’m not saying he won’t have any help, but he needs to get into the mindset that his stuff is his responsibility. A light weight duffel is simple, roomy, and squashable under a bunk.

dure for getting the medication to the nurse.

• Pack stationery and postcards. Put stamps on the envelopes. Have your child address some of the envelopes before he/she goes to camp with your home address as well as friends and relatives. • Let your child take a stuffed animal if he/ she wants. Many children put them on their beds. • Send along pictures of your family and pets. Your child can show them to his bunk mates. • Pack a disposable camera instead of an expensive one. Be sure to write your child’s name on the camera. • Clearly label your child’s suitcase, duffle or trunk.

• Every camp sends a list of things to bring to camp. Follow the list. • Don’t buy expensive clothing for camp. Clothes at camp tend to get dirty; that is just the nature of being in the outdoors. • Pack towels, sheets and pillowcases you don’t mind throwing away. • Pack extra underwear, socks, and t-shirts. • Kids get dirtier and wetter at camp than anyone expects, and you never know what the laundry situation will be. • Take old shoes, gym shoes or hiking boots. Camp is not the place to “break-in” new shoes. • Double up on hats and sunglasses. • Sun protection is a must, and replacements from the camp store might be cheesy and/ or expensive. • Take a laundry bag, rain poncho, water bottle, sun block, insect repellent, flashlight, shower supplies and toiletries. • Put shower supplies and toiletries in a plastic bucket or “shower” container so it is easy to carry to the bathhouse. • Put the camper’s name on everything from clothes to toothpaste. Use a permanent non-washable ink pad or marking pen. • Make sure all medication is in the original container and clearly marked. Know the proceMay/June 2019

Try a New Career in a Year By Pam Molnar

A

nytime is a great time to reevaluate your career goals. Growth is a normal cycle of life. In the spring, things that have been dormant flourish once again, each time more vibrant and strong then they were in the past. Whatever your education path was to this point – some college, college graduate, military duty, trade school or straight to motherhood – it is never too late to learn something new. Continued learning is important not only for your own self-improvement, but for the growth of your family. Reeducation will help you to get a better job and better your financial situation, but consider the beneficial lesson you are teaching your children. By example, you are teaching them to adapt to change, to find balance in life, to take risks and to step outside their comfort zone. If you are in the market for a new career, consider these mom-friendly options. Depending on 50 education central

the path you choose, classes are offered in a traditional classroom setting, online or in a handson learning environment. These flexible learning options are available at an affordable price and will have you working in a new industry in about a year.Take a look at our suggestions below. 1. Real Estate Agent – This is one of the most affordable re-education option for a new career. Classes are offered through local real estate firms as accelerated courses (2-3 weeks), home study or classroom learning. Each state has different requirements, but the average course time requires 90-135 hours, plus 30 post-license hours. According to Simply Hired, the average real estate agent makes $33,000 their first year. 2. Cosmetologist – This licensure covers hairdresser, colorist, makeup artist, nail technician and esthetician. Depending on the state you are working in, the programs require 1200-2100 hours of education. Classes are flexible and include daytime, evening and weekend hours and can be completed in one to two years. If you are looking to spend less time and money, the nail technician program ranges from 600-750 hours for completion. The salary range for a Cosmetologist is $16,000-$44,000 according to Payscale.com. 3. Radiologic Technologist – With this degree, you can perform diagnostic imaging exams and administer radiation treatments. suburban family | subfam.com

Most community colleges offer an associate’s degree, which is a two year program. However, if you already have a college degree, many of your general education classes should transfer, allowing you to complete your degree in less time. According to Salary.com, the median income of a Radiologic Technologist is $52,216. 4. Medical Assistant – If you are interested in the medical field down the road, this is a great foot in the door. The career outlook for a Medical Assistant is better than average – 23% growth over the next 10 years according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The job entails administrative and clinical tasks in hospitals and physician’s offices. You can be certified in a year and go back to complete your associates degree, if desired, after you are employed. Median salary for a Medical Assistant is $30,590. 5. Dental Hygienist – This is the person you have the most interaction with at the dentist office. The amount of time it takes to complete this program through a community college depends on your previous education. Both two and four year degrees are accepted in the industry. Some community colleges even offer 2+2 plans, allowing you to obtain a bachelor’s degree for the cost of community college classes. According to Payscale.com, the earnings of a Dental Hygienist is $46,775 to $87,356. 6. Dog Groomer – Did you know that most dog groomers are women? The average May/June 2019

dog grooming school teaches safety, proper use of grooming tools and breed standards in a hands-on learning environment much like a Cosmetologist. The program time averages 500 hours to certification. Sadly, many states do not regulate a licensure program for dog groomers. Payscale.com reports that the average dog groomer makes between $18,119 and $47,673. Since dog groomers split their pay with the shop owner, there is greater income potential for dog groomers who are self-employed. 7. Bookkeeper – If you don’t have the time to get an advanced accounting degree, why not start with a bookkeeping certificate? A bookkeeper, otherwise known as a para professional accountant, assists business owners with general accounting proce-

dures, payroll and tax preparation under the assistance of a CPA. It takes approximately 18 months and $6500 to complete the program through a community college and often includes opportunity for job placement. According to the Accounting Training and Testing Center, bookkeepers make between $38,500 and $57,250 per year. 8. Computer and Internetworking Technologies – There are many opportunities in this field and often requires less than a year for certification. The most common positions are in network security and support and system specialists. In other words, these are the people who set up and maintain large computer systems. Depending on your certification, you can expect to make $36,000 - $75,000 according to Payscale.com.

family wellness A child’s health encompasses physical, mental and social well-being. It is important to maintain good overall health in children so they grow and develop appropriately. My grandfather used to say, “if you have your health you have everything.” If you and your child are healthy, you will have more energy, lower medical costs, improved moods, and live longer. Here are some ways to promote healthy habits within your child: Create a Bedtime Routine and Regular Bedtime: Sleep helps your brain function properly which improves learning. Studies show sleep deficiency increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Receiving the proper amount of sleep promotes appropriate growth and development, improves social interactions and increases immunity against diseases.

By Cheryl Maguire Another way to help your child receive the proper amount of sleep is to have a bedtime routine a half-hour before the expected sleep time. This routine will help your child relax which would then lead to falling asleep easier. Some suggested bedtime routines are reading, a warm bath, drawing, listening to soothing music or other calming activities.

NIH recommends school-age children and teens should sleep for 9-10 hours per night. Bad sleep habits will affect both your physical and emotional health. One way to ensure your child is receiving enough sleep is to create a scheduled bedtime based on when they need to wake up in the morning. If you maintain the same bedtime every night it will be easier to fall asleep and create a healthy habit.

Read Food Labels: According to the CDC childhood obesity has more than tripled since

1970. Childhood obesity has both short and long term effects on a child’s physical, social and emotional health. For this reason, it is important for a child to maintain a healthy weight. Reading and understanding food labels is a way for a child to figure out if a food is healthy to eat. The food label will demonstrate the number of calories, sugar, fat content and also break down the percent of the recommended daily intake to help create a balanced diet. It also

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – regardless of their ability to pay. the Shriners Hospital system has provided care for over 1.3 million children.

helps to become more aware of what you are eating since you might think a food is healthy only to learn it isn’t after reading the food label. You can find free printable worksheets to help your child understand a balanced diet here.

Exercise with Your Kids: The CDC recommends children and teens should be physically active for 60 minutes per day.The physical activity should include aerobic, strengthening and bone strengthening activities. If you exercise with your child and select something you both view as fun, you will be more likely to do it. Some suggested family activities are walking, running, hiking, dancing, biking, and a workout class or video. Create a weekly scheduled routine to incorporate it into your life which would create a healthy habit.

Limit Screen Time: Screen time consists of watching television, playing video games or using electronic devices. When a child is in front of a screen they are typically sedentary and not interacting with others. A research study at UCLA found when kids have too much screen time they have difficulty understanding other people’s emotions. Dr. Leonard Epstein studied the effects of limiting screen time in obese children. The findings demonstrate when screen time is limited the children consumed 300-1500 fewer calories. Both of these research studies demonstrate the importance of limiting screen time to help your child socially interact with others, eat fewer calories and be more physically active.

Discuss Physical and Emotional Safety: According to the CDC one of the leading causes of death in children is car accidents. One study found over 600,000 children did not use the proper car seat or seat belt which could prevent death during a car accident. Other accidental deaths include drowning, fire/ burns, guns, poisoning, and suffocation. To prevent injuries and death it is important to discuss safety issues regarding all of these potentially dangerous situations.

Be a Healthy Role Model: Children and teens model their parent’s positive and negative behaviors. Research conducted at Duke University found kids were more likely to eat well and exercise if their parent modeled those behaviors. If you model a healthy lifestyle, your child will most likely lead one as well.

SPECIALTIES

The AMITA Health Pediatrics Institute makes it easy to access academic-level pediatric care, with specialists in more than 60 areas and specialty clinics in Hinsdale and Hoffman Estates. Our Center for the Pediatric Brain treats nearly every neurological condition to help ensure healthy cognition and development. Even our hospitals and ERs are designed for kids and families, with pediatric-trained nurses, radiologists, surgeons and Child Life Specialists. We’re committed to caring for kids. In sickness and in health.™

Encourage Social Interactions: It is important to encourage your child to develop healthy relationships with peers and adults. Problem-solving, managing friendships, and understanding emotions are necessary for a child’s positive mental health. These skills will also enable a child to learn more effectively in the classroom.

Children and teenager may be in situations when they are offered drugs or subjected to physical or sexual abuse. It is important to discuss with your child healthy and appropriate relationships.

Tips That Can Really Work Out By Cheryl Maguire

“How many miles are you cycling today?” The Spin teacher shouted out the question to the class and then people yelled back 18, 20, 21. “It’s important to create a goal of how many miles you will cycle so you can work towards your goal during the class. You will work out harder if you have a goal.” I’m a fitness fanatic, who works out on average six days a week. There is so much information out there about fitness and nutrition sometimes I’m left wondering, who is correct? So I asked two of my favorite instructors, for their advice on the topic. “You really are what you eat. You can work out all you want to but if you do not eat properly it will not matter,” says Rosann Doherty a Pilates and Spin instructor for the past ten years at various gyms. She is also a certificated personal trainer and nutritionist and owns a private personal training business. Doherty explains that the number one nutrition fact she offers people is, “What you look like is based 90% on what you eat.” Aileen Marino, who taught step and kickboxing classes for six years, mantra for fitness and life in general is, “have fun.” She says, “Avoid using a scale. People often become discouraged from exercising if their weight remains the same. A better indicator of your body size is how well your clothes fit you.” Eat Breakfast Doherty stresses the importance of eating breakfast. She says, “Eating breakfast jump starts your engine. Breakfast should be the 54 fitness first

biggest meal of the day. When you avoid breakfast your body struggles for the rest of the day to make up for the lost meal.” Drink Water Both Doherty and Marino agree drinking water helps to keep you hydrated, especially when exercising and prevents you from overeating. Doherty says, “Your body requires 64 oz of water per day. When you exercise you should drink 8 oz for every 20 minutes of activity.” Often people mistake dehydration for hunger which leads to unnecessary eating. People tend to drink more calories than they realize which leads to weight gain. Doherty says, “Water contains 0 calories. It is important to note coffee and sugary drinks are diacritics. When you drink these drinks you should also drink 8 oz of water to replace the fluid you lost.” Eat Often In addition to drinking water, it is important to eat small meals every two to three hours. Doherty says, “Eating this often helps maintain your sugar levels at an even keel. Maintaining your sugar levels will sustain your metabolism and energy levels. You also will prevent overeating since you feel full.” Eat Healthy Fats When you eat often, include healthy fats. Doherty says, “Often people avoid eating foods with fat since they think it will lead to weight gain. Eating healthy fats helps you to feel full and burns fat. Healthy fats can be found in nuts, fish, and olive/canola/flaxseed oil. When eating nuts, you should aim for two tablespoons per day.” Interval and Strength Training In relation to fitness, Doherty stresses the suburban family | subfam.com

importance of internal and strength training. She explains that interval training is when you raise your heart rate for short periods of time during your cardiovascular workout. Strength training is when you use weights or some type of resistance during your workout. Doherty says, “Both types of training help to strengthen your heart and lungs which in turn causes you to burn more calories for several days after your workout.” She explains that when you work out at a steady aerobic pace without intervals you will burn fat during your workout only as opposed to several days of a higher caloric burn with interval and strength training. She also says, “When you are strength training you build muscles which then, in turn, burns fat. You also burn more fat then you would during an aerobic exercise.” Stretch Marino begins and ends all her classes with a minimum of five minutes of stretching. She says “It is important to stretch before and after working out to prevent injuries. Stretching also helps to increase your flexibility.” Avoid Comparisons Marino feels that you should avoid comparisons to other people. She says, “Often people become frustrated when they compare their fitness level to other people. Everyone’s bodies are distinctive and respond differently to training.” Have Fun Marino says, “Whatever exercise routine you chose, it is important to have fun while doing it. You will make a commitment to exercise if you enjoy it.” May/June 2019
