Roger Raveel: A retrospective at BOZAR Until 21 July Born in Machelen exactly a hundred years ago, Roger Henri Kamiel, Knight Raveel, is one of the most important Belgian painters of the 20th century. His work, often categorised as pop-art, generally depicted trivial everyday objects. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, Bozar exhibits through several chapters Raveel’s long artistic journey and the emergence of his unique pictorial vision. Julien’s tip: on your way to Bozar, we suggest you make a detour to metro station Mérode where Raveel created a large wall painting in 1976.

The Constant Glitch at M Leuven Until 30 June The City of Leuven, Cera and M Leuven have joined forces to support 19 artists with the purchase of 37 works thanks to the combination of a crowdfunding and the museum’s fund. A little shot of oxygen for the cultural sector that is more than welcome in this current state 9

of emergency. These 19 artists, selected on the basis of their activity in the Belgian art scene and the need for support, are showcased at M Leuven in the form of films, paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, screen prints, textiles, sound works and spatial installations.

Home Stories at Design Museum Gent

Until 31 July Need inspiration to re-organise your cocoon? Home Stories might be what you’re looking for. Design Museum Gent showcases interior designs from the past 100 years, revisiting the concepts and decisive moments that defined the ways we experience our homes today.

Do you want to join our events too? Every Subbacultcha member is welcome! Not a member yet? Check out our plans at subbacultcha.be and discover all the new music and art our community has to offer!

Editor’s note

Déjà Vu These days you might feel like you’ve already seen it, that you have been going through the present situation before and already experienced what is happening now. We know, we cannot deny that a splash of pure nostalgia gets us weak at the same time lately – it’s the feeling of slight sadness when you think about things that happened in the past. However, this issue you’re holding in your hands is a current representation of what passes by here and now in Subbacultcha-land and how we shed light on (y)our own reality. So the past is a goodbye, creativity is a presence. Thank you Milena, Laura, Julien, KasperJan, Mats, Meg, Gabriela, Chloé, Elise, Lars, Joselito and the marvelous people featured in our 20-something list! Your editor-in-chief, Herlinde 11

‘Loving photo books and short stories’ A new Master on Braeckman, Fieret, Kooiker and Štrba at Be-Part Waregem

Joselito Verschaeve

Belgian photographer Joselito Verschaeve prefers to assemble his photographs in books. Through carefully selected sequences, he manages to orchestrate elusive rhythms alongside subtle hints of the story he might be telling. Initially, the black and white images may appear extreme. Yet, once your eyes have adjusted, a range of nuances unfold, and you notice that it is really the space in-between that tells all. 12

‘In that sense I am longing to grow old, because I will have more images to play around with’

What did you think of the exhibition? I liked it. The four photographers included are clearly all photographer-collectors, having built and working with sizeable archives of material. Would you say you are a photographercollector yourself? I am not a materialist, but I am a collector when it comes to images. I was triggered by photography for the first time when I realised that I could construct narratives with just a handful of images. That is still my methodology. I like to constantly shuffle my images into new narratives. In that sense I am longing to grow old, because I will have more images to play around with by then. You cherish a particular fondness for photo books, which is similar to Paul Kooiker’s approach. Were you always interested in the book form? My fascination for books started when I began studying photography. In my work I am very focused on books, constantly thinking about what image could fit on the next page. I started reading a lot when I started at KASK as well. Much more than I previously did. What are you reading? I love reading short stories. I am currently reading Mr. Palomar 15

by Italo Calvino, a story in which Palomar goes to the seaside and tries to see a wave from its beginning to its end. The fact that Calvino writes about such a specific action fascinates me. I think I try to focus on seemingly banal instances as well, which resonates with the photographer’s approaches in the exhibition at Be-Part. How does your constant shuffling of images relate to your love for the book, a form that is final? Kooiker employs a similar methodology. If I remember correctly, he uses the same images in different books. I don’t think images are ‘used up’ once you have used them in a book. Your focus on books could also suggest an inclination towards narrative in your work. I am rather thinking about themes than constructing a story when I work. Also, I never pronounce the narrative myself. That is something that is entirely in the viewer’s hands, not in mine. How much of yourself is reflected in these images? A lot. Sometimes I notice that it’s difficult for me to pinpoint what some of my images represent. In retrospect, I realise that they remind me of my own

16

recollections – as if they are gateways to my memories, even though they were shot in an entirely different context or place. I have been thinking about that a lot lately. I think there is more going on than I can put into words.

Brussels, 27 @la_vica_ audio-visual artist

How would you describe what you do? Heterogeneous and hyperactive, always in constant evolution. Aesthetically, I seek to confront the organic or archaic with the technological. As a result, there is a touch of entelechy and SF, either in my sound or plastic work. Anything planned for the future? This year I am launching myself in a project of hydraulic sound sculptures made on ceramics, inspired by Mesoamerican pre-Hispanic aerophones, it is something that I have been preparing for a couple of years, but I will finally be able to start it in a kind of crossed residence between the Beursschouwburg and the EKWC in the Netherlands, where I will spend three months creating the pieces. I hope I will be able to show the work at the end of the year in different formats like concerts, installations and dance performances. Favourite memory? When I was little in Oaxaca, at the beginning of each rain season we went with my family to pick Azucenas flowers in the countryside of my town. Those flowers smell soooo good and they blossom at sunset, and they are white, so when I was little I had the impression they could glow in the dark. What advice would you give your younger/older self? Ana Victoria, don’t give up on your solfege and guitar classes. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? Eating plants in my mom’s garden. Are you a nostalgic person? Totally, I live far from my family and my culture, so nostalgia is a feeling that keeps me closer to all these things that I miss in a way.

Brussels, 23 @noixdekadjou cineast, activist and artist

How would you describe what you do? Young cineast, activist and collagist. What are you currently busy with? Finding ways to not respect the lockdown without paying too many fees. Anything planned for the future? I have trouble imagining the future, I don’t really know where I am going but I am going there purposefully. Latest déjà vu? I weirdly have the impression sometimes that I am in a loop of infinite lockdown, but it’s just a déjà vu. Any new habits? Taking trains to random destinations. Favourite memory? Last nightclub party before lockdown. What advice would you give your younger/older self? To my younger self: stop praying to have a big breast it’s not going to happen. To my older self: don’t regret the tattoos you made when you were 20. Favourite emoji? *^-^* Cutest desire you have? Becoming a fairy. Biggest personal change since last year? I am really close to being able to pee while standing. Are you a nostalgic person? I have no regret for the past but I enjoy being a bit melancholic sometimes because I think it helps with creativity.

Leuven, 20 @chiarasteemans_photography photographer How would you describe what you do? Empowering women and expressing myself through visuals. Nickname(s) people have given you? Kiki :). Any new habits? Positive affirmations every morning & going for walks. Weirdest dream you’ve had? They are all pretty weird, but fun fact, almost every photo concept I did, came from my dreams. I get almost all my inspiration out of my dreams, my notes and voice notes are full of ideas I wrote down in the middle of the night. Favourite memory? Showering with a garden hose naked in the garden at midnight with Salomé (I had no shower at that time and it was a really hot Summer). What advice would you give your younger/older self? To my younger self: Don’t destroy yourself trying to fix others. To my older self: never stop creating and surround yourself with people who will respect you(r energy). Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? A peaceful world :). Biggest personal change since last year? I am even more focussed on photography, I compare and complain less.

Ghent, 21 @wijk8 off-space How would you describe what you do? We are three artists from Ghent who felt the need to create a new exhibition space. By rebuilding the entrance of our atelier, we created an off-space that all together now is WIJK 8. Our goal is to provide artists a platform where they can get in touch with art enthusiasts and galleries. Mainly, we want to support starting artists because the road to becoming a professional artist is very suffocating. By serving as a meeting point, WIJK 8 hopes to change the way starting artists are treated. Any new habits? Waking up at 8. Weirdest dream you’ve had? WIJK 8 in Beijing. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? Them boys in Beijing. Biggest personal change since last year? By doing this we are much more forced to be adults. By becoming a VZW and organising exhibitions during lockdown and such we have to be more careful with what we do. How did last year change your perspective? That things are not as hard as they seem. For example; going professional is also possible on a low budget. Are you a nostalgic person? One year ago, we were sitting in a bar and had the plan of renting an atelier together. With some precaution and a lot of impulsivity we made it.

33

Ghent, 27 @louloujoao visual artist

How would you describe what you do? Squishy & bubbly 3D realness. I always start from Blender (software) to create my pieces. The eventual output can be anything: animation, illustration, sculptures, etc. What are you currently busy with? I’m currently designing a plush toy for a rapper and also working on a scene in an episode of one of my favorite animated shows for Adult Swim. Which is all so exciting :). Any new habits? I’m really getting into jam skating, it’s so freeing! Also a great excuse to go outside and just vibe with some good music. Weirdest dream you’ve had? The weirder the dreams, the faster I forget them after waking up. I should write them down so I’m prepared for questions like this lol. Favourite memory? Getting into quad skating last summer and meeting some wonderful people. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? Not sure what the definition of a ‘cute desire’ is. :) But I can’t wait to receive my motion capture suit and intertwine my physicality to my digital alter ego Miss Focket. Are you a nostalgic person? I’m not so sure. I’ve had to learn to live more in the moment, that’s what I like to enjoy now. Which doesn’t mean I don’t have fond memories and excitement for the future. But I don’t want to dwell in it.

Brussels, 24 @naomigilon visual artist How would you describe what you do? I create chimerical objects. What are you currently busy with? My series of monstrous earthenware bags. Any new habits? Start the day by going to the post office. Anything planned for the future? It’s better not to anticipate too much. Exhibitions, great encounters and especially the edition of my first monograph. What’s your daily routine like? A typical day: shower, coffee with the cat, drop off parcels, work / studio, come home exhausted and send emails. Super exciting pace as currently. Weirdest dream you’ve had? The dream I will never forget: I must have been 10 years old. I’m in my parent’s car without a driver and I walk toward the entrance to this oddly dark forest. Then I find myself trapped in a storage room, between brooms and fools, with a crocodile. And every time I woke up without having the end of the story! Favourite memory? I have a lot of them, but the Summer breakfasts with my family at my parents’ vacation home in Normandy are so lovely. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? Have a big house to bring together all the people I love. Biggest personal change since last year? The adoption of the third love of my life; my cat Alaskka. Otherwise my first show in the USA is cool too.

Antwerp, 21 @walt.ur @burenhinder founder of female rave collective, DJ

How would you describe what you do? I am a hardcore DJ who just started my own female rave collective along with some girlfriends. I manage the collective and am in charge of communication. You can call me the mom of Burenhinder. What are you currently busy with? Currently we are temporarily trying to shape our collective in such a way that we stay relevant and up-to-date, despite the pandemic. We’re planning some corona-proof online events and creating an audience. We are also still looking for female talent that we can offer a platform. As WLTR, I am now busy providing mixes for upcoming Burenhinder gigs and giving my music library a thorough cleaning. Any new habits? I used to sort my music in a very chaotic way. After a year and half of dabbling, I finally found my way to go. So now I sort my music immediately after downloading it. I also make backups often since six months ago I lost my previous laptop and my music to a cup of tea that caused a short circuit. Weirdest dream you’ve had? Recently I dreamed that I gave birth to my own cat. Cutest desire you have? World Peace. Biggest personal change since last year? I have begun to take myself and my dreams more seriously. Early January, I began to give Burenhinder a specific form, namely an introductory livestream. Before that, I called myself a baby DJ or a DJ joke, but then a friend made me realise that if I didn’t start taking myself seriously, no one probably would.

Are you a nostalgic person? Yes!! What I do is all about nostalgia.

41

Brussels/Manila, 25 @joshudoser multi-disciplinary artist How would you describe what you do? My work revolves mainly in performance and choreography but I have always considered myself as a multi-disciplinary artist. I studied contemporary dance in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Brussels, and I’m now taking a masters in Visual Arts at KASK. Now, my work is focused on creating performance and materialising objects based on performance practice. It also revolves around topics of Identity, decolonisation of the body, queer politics, embodiment and representation, states of being, ways of inhibiting the body, the duality of the physical form, and also its overall representation. All of this translates in the body, and ultimately it becomes a practice that is situated in spaces. Anything planned for the future? Focus on creating new works, and perform all works that have been postponed. I would like to go home to the Philippines and learn how to surf. Weirdest dream you’ve had? Dreams are really important for me, never really considered them weird. I have a habit of writing them immediately after waking up. I believe they are messages from the universe, it has predicted certain events in my life such as moving to another city, relationships, projects, and even death. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? To take out the heteronormative ideal in society, and also have a pet rabbit. Biggest personal change since last year? Learned to say no to people. I’ve also started to learn how to keep my own integrity, values, morality and not to compromise myself and my identity to others.

Ghent/Brussels, 23 @Iambadgalriri__ musician How would you describe what you do? I’m a musician. I would describe my music as a mishmash of Jazz, R&b and electronic music. Anything planned for the future? After my single release (April 16th) I’m starting my residence at Volta. So writing a lot of new music and bringing out an EP in the near future is the plan! Nickname(s) people have given you? Riri and Cutepuke. Latest déjà vu? I honestly don’t know. I dream a lot so I’m often confused about if my déjà vu’s are real or not. Weirdest dream you’ve had? I was in an apartment, surrounded by rabbits who were malformed and I would kill them if they would try to approach me. Very traumatic. But I have a lot of ‘weird’ dreams so I’m used to it. What advice would you give your younger/older self? I would tell her to be less scared of speaking up. Favourite emoji? How did last year change your perspective? I feel like I empowered myself a lot and really started practicing what I’m preaching: setting my boundaries faster, accepting myself and my body, being proud of what I achieve, trying to be more organized cause I’m a mess sometimes… Are you a nostalgic person? I’m a very nostalgic person, I think about the past all the time. But I don’t feel like I stick to it.

Brussels/Leuven, 20 @gap_i_0.9 painter

What are you currently busy with? I’ve been painting a lot. I really like simple combinations of two colors. When I paint, I always try to keep it simple, doing that just looks way more intense to me. Anything planned for the future? I’m doing something with Slagwerk and there’s a magazine that Ssaliva and I are working on. That’s it I think. Nickname(s) people have given you? People have been calling me gapi for quite a while now. What’s your daily routine like? At the moment the only thing that’s consistent about my daily structure is the push-ups. I try to keep the week balanced though. (hahaha) Weirdest dream you’ve had? There was this big bull in my yard. It was going to attack me, but I was able to grab it by the horns. We wrestled like that for quite some time. It felt amazing, really vivid. What artists are you listening to? Tony Shhnow, 10kdunkin, Rushhy Bandxz, Djnateakabakaman and Lucki. ssaliva and Dida make some really good music, Jef Roels makes amazing things on GarageBand and Quintano just dropped a crazy album. I also love Spinvis and old Booba stuff. Favourite emoji? Love of your life? I think I will always love skateboarding; art gets on my nerves sometimes. How did last year change your perspective? Corona made me see that everybody is just trying to deal with the situation, but failing. It takes us off our pedestal. We’re all equally stupid. 46

Ghent/Brussels, 20-something @hs71label collective/label How would you describe what you do? HS71 is an 8-headed collective/label, consisting of producers, graphic artists and those who aim to lead everything in the right direction. We produce and issue our own music every year which is visually reinforced by graphic work. What are you currently busy with? We are currently preparing ourselves to organize events at Broei, in Ghent. Besides that, we are trying to entice some new artists to share our platform with. And of course, we are releasing a lot of new graphic projects and music this year, so stay tuned! Nickname(s) people have given you? HS71 is already a nickname and is actually coming from our gathering place in Ghent, Hoogstraat 71. Weirdest dream you’ve had? Having a big ass party with all of our friends and kissing everyone. What artists are you listening to? Each member of our team recently made a playlist with 30 songs that describe themselves. If you want to know what artists we are listening to, you should head over to HS71 on Spotify! Favourite emoji? How did last year change your perspective? We began to think more digital. It also showed us the importance of dancing together, talking in real life and those random evenings where we would come together and end the night full of laughter. We learned that dancing together keeps us thinking and coming together keeps us dreaming. To see each other in real life (not on a screen) is quintessential.

Nickname(s) people have given you? Duracell. Any new habits? More reading, more thinking and recently felt the urge to learn a new craft: floor layer. What artists are you listening to? Pharaoh Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Fela Kuti, Alfa Mist and Matthew Halsall. Favourite memory? The future. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? Buying a tropical island. How did last year change your perspective? Plans can change, but the vision is still the same. Are you a nostalgic person? Ask my sisters. Anything planned for the future? (Re)drawing the landscape.

Antwerp, 27 @lil_rhiz0me musician How would you describe what you do? Trying to communicate thoughts and feelings. Latest déjà vu? My entire life feels like I have been (t)here done that. Any new habits? The latest habit I developed is eating a carrot and drinking ginger tea almost daily. Weirdest dream you’ve had? The one time I went outside of my body and went for a walk in my apartment. Favourite memory? Waking up as a 3 year old in the backseat while feeling the trees passing my face and casting their shadows upon us as the car drove into Paris, while there was a cassette playing ‘Je t’aime, moi non plus’. What advice would you give your younger/older self? Be thankful for what you have, it can always get worse. Favourite emoji? Cutest desire you have? The belief that connection can be found through media consumption. How did last year change your perspective? The situation in the world is so absurd that it makes me feel better, a bit like when you watch 90 Day Fiance (reality tv show) and you feel better about yourself afterwards.

Antwerp, 23 @linaejdaa curator

How would you describe what you do? Currently I am planting seeds within my artistic practice: developing my own approach as a freelance curator and with BOX22, my own collective, and I write articles and proposals for artistic projects. Besides that, I’m working for NICC, an artists’ initiative run by and for artists. The core activity of the NICC is to promote, critique and feed the debate on the development of artistic practice. Latest déjà vu? Read this question ten times, and I am still not able to remember one. Do people remember that? Any new habits? I recently started archiving all the exhibition texts I collected over the years, super satisfying. Would recommend it. Weirdest dream you’ve had? I don’t really dream, as in dreaming of a certain future or goal, but the weirdest dream I lately had was about me holding a sculpture, in the Wide White Space (artspace in Antwerp in the 60s/70s) and Vaast Colson and Lieven Segers fighting on how I should carry the sculpture best, while they were drinking beers and smoking. Don’t really know how I feel about this dream. What advice would you give your younger/older self? Younger self: don’t start collecting. Older self: never stop collecting. Cutest desire you have? Dressing my future kids up as Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels for carnaval. Biggest personal change since last year? Knowing, to a certain extent, more what I want, and realizing how much I have grown, though at the same time being aware of the fact that this process is never ending.

Brussels, 26 @mahinachameleon musician How would you describe what you do? What I do could be described as trying to translate my connection with the source, God, as a means to inspire others to feel relatable and/or triggered. What are you currently busy with? I am currently mostly busy with getting my long-awaited EP out. All the songs are written, selected, re-selected, confirmed and recorded! Any new habits? Reminding myself every single day to not care so much about what anybody thinks of me and not tolerating nonsense, because we’re all dying and it’s a shame to drain one’s energy, trying to please a fellow mortal. Weirdest dream you’ve had? My dreams are always weird; I’ve had many dreams that came true in real life, mostly symbolically, but literally too, I feel very connected with God even in the little things and I cherish this and care for it in a precious and intimate way. What artists are you listening to? Lately, I’m listening to my own songs to perfect them. What advice would you give your younger/older self? I would tell both my younger and older self to keep her child’s heart, always and when she feels alone and unsafe to talk to anyone, she can find warmth and love in prayer. Cutest desire you have? It’s not the cutest, but I would love to swim with dolphins one day. How did last year change your perspective? I realised how much more stable I am mentally, than I thought, thanks to the isolation of the lockdown and last, but not least, I understand and I am so grateful my art journey moves slowly, but surely, because I’m not accepting what is against myself and my principles.

Antwerp, 24 @imthehug @overlast_ promotor How would you describe what you do? Supporting young Belgian artists. By day, I work for VI.BE. By night, I’m curator, organiser, radio host and seeker of fresh talent. OVERLAST arose from the urge to create a safe space for young musicians to experiment and find their audience and for audiences to discover new music in a playful way. Also to blur the lines between the classic concert format and nightlife/parties. As part of the We Are Various team, the online radio station, I try to give young DJ’s, artists and hosts a platform to curate and create as well. The radio shows are also a way for me to express my love for music and storytelling. Any new habits? Making coffee and taking a walk around the block; going to the library to get 20 dvd’s every week; trying to cook all the Belgian classics and going to the market every Saturday. This past year has taught me to enjoy the little things in life. Farourite memory? I’m 5 years old, crying in the lobby of Cinema Cartoon’s while Libertango by Grace Jones is playing. I just watched Spirited Away and am scarred for life. What advice would you give your younger/older self? Younger self: you are cool and everything you do is cool, stop trying to fit other people’s idea of coolness. Older self: stay kind, open and wide eyed. Favourite emoji? Are you a nostalgic person? Very much so. Sometimes I get nostalgic in the moment, knowing it will be over soon. As long as it doesn’t keep you from living in the moment, I think it’s a beautiful feeling. A kind of soft sadness.

Leuven, 22 @jente.waerzeggers musician, photographer How would you describe what you do? I have a multidisciplinary practice, mainly situated within Belgium’s alternative music scene. I work with photo, video and music. I’m part of De Nooit Moede, Kontakt Group and nacht, and photo editor for Not So Difficult Magazine. What are you currently busy with? Preparing two video-gigs with De Nooit Moede and working on the artwork for a couple of to-be-announced records. I’m also giving skateboarding lessons to kids in Leuven. Anything planned for the future? Many things – an expo in STELPLAATS and the second edition of Not So Difficult in September. Also new music and publishing my website. For next year, my main focus will be my masters project. Nickname(s) people have given you? I didn’t really have nicknames in the past but Victor De Roo started calling me J-Boy a couple of months ago. Best one so far! Weirdest dream you’ve had? I’ve had plenty of dreams about going out and being drunk since the start of the pandemic – those might’ve been even better than the real deal. What artists are you listening to? Maggi Payne, Sonic Youth, yyed, Yung Hurn, Plate De, Frederik Valentin, Still House Plants, Matthieu Serruys, The Breeders, HAJJ, the list goes on and on. I also like to listen to cellvl’s Instagram stories on repeat. Favourite emoji? Biggest personal change since last year? Getting less intoxicated has been a blessing overall. Are you a nostalgic person? For sure, otherwise I think I wouldn’t be doing what I do. 61
