PRESIDENT’S REPORT Report Number 2, wow this is beginning to be a habit. After last month’s two page introductory saga, I thought I would let you all off with a half effort this time. Aim lower I say, no more than one page. For info, the committee had their monthly meeting last night and with some laughter and a little serious debate, we came up with a few productive snippets The next big event is the Christmas Party. It will be held at Ballina on 24-25 November at the Sea Breeze Caravan Park (334 South Ballina Beach Rd South Ballina), Although officially just running over the Saturday night, many members make an extra long weekend of it and go down early and even stay late. No need to book, just rock on in. What the Committee needs is to get a heads-up re numbers for catering purposes. Cost will be $10 per person payable on Saturday with kids under 12 eating free. Please have a chat at home and if keen, let the trip leader know and/or let Luke know. Remember to bring along a little something for the hampers to the value of $10 and be ready for a fun camp-out. The Social Director is already looking at some trips for early next year and we will hopefully be running something over the Australia Day Weekend. Details will be coming soon with updates at the monthly meetings. There are still a few members who haven’t paid-up and the Membership Officer will be knocking on your door soon, hopefully only figuratively. Property posed a great deal of interest last night with suggestions of getting in some new items for sale. Items up for consideration are small stationary items such as pens, note books and calendars. These would be available for internal sales and could also be used as cheap PR hand-outs. One anonymous member (no, I refuse to divulge Luke’s name) suggested club stubby holders and YES, I love those so my fingers are crossed. Clothing was also considered with a light Spray Jacket showing the most interest within the committee. So please have a think about what you might like to see on offer and have a chat to the Property Officer, obviously keeping our tight budget in mind. Our newly formed Editorial Team of (M&M) are going strong, but please make their work easier by getting in reports and letters ASAP. You might also like to know that we all saw Mick doing some of ‘that hard work’ last night, yes, he made Marion a cuppa. So let’s end it on safety. Please remember to grab yourself a first aid kit and either a fire extinguisher or fire blanket for your car. Thanks Shane Cramp (SC 637)

BELLTHORPE NIGHT RUN – 1st September 2012

On a cool winters first Saturday night in September, we gathered at the newly renovated Woodford Pub car park. We had a big roll up as we had to keep adding extra tables and chairs on to our dinner table. We had trip leader Yarney in his new lifted Forester GT auto, it was only on its 2nd run after being off the road for many months with some panel damage that his son had done, Dave Gibson in his new 01 Forester, he had just fitted 16 inch alloys and a strut lift, Mick and Marion Kos lifted Forester , Mick had fitted a set of smart looking 15 inch Liberty alloys, Daz Woods auto lifted Forester, just for a drive he had already travelled the 300 odd kms down from Hervey Bay, Shane Cramp and Mary Horner in Shane's lifted Outback, Phil Nelis and Brad Hicks in Phil's lifted Brumby, Brad was driving as Phil had hurt his knee, Shaun and friend, Shaun is a possible new member from the Sunshine Coast, he had recently bought, one time Club member Arnold Shoemaker's 99 Forester, he had just fitted a strut lift, 16 inch alloys, his own designed snorkel, sump guard and unusual exhaust headers, Grant Thomas and friend in Grant's Mitsubishi IEO, Dwayne and Cheryl Boyton big Hilux Surf, Big John McKenna and his sister Madonna Rodeo, he just had a big repair bill to pay, with new front brake pads, rear shoes , wheel cylinders, steering rack end and a rear diff seal, myself in the Buggy with newly fitted RX rear disc brakes. After a nice dinner, there was a bit of a mix up of orders that was sorted out. I think Yarney got a fine for taking the wrong order...oops! From Woodford with Yarney in the lead and Big John as tail end Charlie, we set off for the tracks in the hills, slowly winding our way up the Bellthorpe Range. To our surprise at the top creek crossing Yarney came across an oncoming Patrol. It turned out to be a local family, out for a night drive. From here we turned west towards Jimna and soon drove through an area that had a slowly burning bush fire, probably a controlled burn off. We didn't see anyone keeping an eye on it. Not much further on Yarney had us all on bypass track with a steep rutted downhill, that everyone got down without any problems. Soon after, we swung east for the downhill run towards Connondale. On this section Dwayne called for a coffee break (take note that I didn't make the call, but I was happy with it) since our last visit to this area the last rutted downhill section had got worse. Yarney was on hand to guide everyone through. You’ve got to be extra careful when night driving. The last tricky bit was a very narrow washed out, earth crossing with pipes underneath over a gully. The only option you had to get through was to stay hard right. Dwayne in the Surf didn't have a lot of room to spare. Next stop was back on the bitumen where we said our goodbyes to Daz, he was heading back home to Hervey Bay (that's keenness). Our final stop was the south bound BP Morayfield for an after mid night snack and cuppa. Night runs are good fun, thanks to Yarney for a great trip and for everyone else helping David Martin (SC 180)

BORDER RANGES - 26th August 2012 Those that stayed at the Woodenbong Showgrounds after the Border Ranges Rally woke to a frosty morning with Jan and Mary arriving about 8:30am and after packing up and a quick briefing from Jan (trip Leader) we headed off about 9:30am. Present on this trip was Jan in his Forester, Mary in her Forester, Darren in a Forester, John and Ron in John’s Rodeo with the camper, Bob in a Pajero, myself in the L Series and Dave (tail end duties) in his Brumby. We initially travelled south to Urbenville and went left at the servo and left again onto a good dirt track where the first obstacle was a tree over the track that we all made it under, some of the taller members had to lift this to get enough clearance for John’s camper to get through. As we descended there were some deep ruts and small mud holes. At the next intersection we took a right then a left onto a good gravel track, we took another right turn up a fairly steep climb up with lots of whoa boys to the top of Mt Tooloom. The area was very dry and most of the tracks were quite dusty. At the top of the climb was a fire tower with an observer monitoring a couple of local fires. The tower was 810m above sea level. Dave and Mary climbed up and had a chat with him and while here we took the opportunity to have smoko. We came down again on the same track with one stop to check a rattle from under Mary’s Forester which turned out to be a loose bolt in the sump guard. At the bottom we took a left turn but the track was too overgrown so backtracked and took the right hand fork and came out of the Edinburgh Castle State Forest on Brumby Plains Road, good gravel and into farming country. We took another left into Boomi Creek Road where we picked up several lengths of bunting that was missed after the rally. It was along this stretch that one of the rally cars ran off the road and ended upside down in a creek. We were going to stop to have a look but most of us missed it except for the last few cars. Back onto the Urbenville road and Jan, Mary and Darren went into town to pick up some lunch while we waited at the Boomi Creek, Clarence way intersection. South again on the bitumen and a right turn onto Yambra Road and right again onto Connell’s Road, then a left onto a rally stage, then left again (are we going in circles?) We took another left and a right and came to a group of rock climbers at a huge cliff, where we stopped to watch. It is apparently a popular climbing spot named Battery Hill. We moved on and crossed the creek above the Tooloom Falls and had a lunch stop at the picnic area. After lunch John and Ron headed home and the rest of us went back across the creek and took a left into Gooroobi Road and back onto Connells Rd. (I knew we were going in circles!) and into the Yabbra State Forest where there was a huge tree fall that we had to move before continuing on until we came to a “No Trespassing” sign on a gate. Darren went to check a track but it did not go anywhere so had to backtrack to get back to Urbenville. As it was getting late and we all had a fair way home, we called it quits and headed north back to Queensland. We stopped for dinner and everyone split up and headed home. We travelled 164 offroad km for the day with an average speed of 35km/h. Shannon & Bill Greenwood (SC 608)

MY SUBIES.... A few years ago I was looking for a second car. The plan was to get something basic. I needed it to get me to and from work (Rosewood to Amberley and return – about 10kms each way). We found one in Toogoolawah. It was an L Series 4WD Sedan. It was my first Subaru. I was hooked immediately. The balance and predictable attitude of the car, especially in wet conditions on the rough bitumen and gravel local roads, won me over. She wasn’t flashy, but I liked her anyway. In fact, I liked it a lot. I talked to some of my fellow workmates about my ever-increasing appreciation for this car. Without having owned or driven a Subaru they didn’t understand and sometimes thought I was talking through my hat. Unfortunately it started overheating just driving around town. Having no real mechanical knowledge I knew its days were numbered. If I was a member of the club, it may have had a greater chance of resurrection. Having being bitten by the “bug”, I was only interested in another Subaru as a replacement. I found a 1994 Subaru Liberty Sedan. Over the next 5 years, driving about 120,000kms during that time, I felt I was spoilt. Although it was getting older, and later models were being introduced onto the market, I was getting further attached. I changed workplaces several times during this period. This has meant that the requirement of my car also has varied. My current employer is based at Murarrie. Having a daily round trip of 150kms, my wife suggested I buy another car, preferably a newer vehicle that will be reliable, safe and good to drive for that distance every day. My employer suggested that I could achieve this simply by taking advantage of the Salary Sacrifice Novated Lease Package that was on offer under their Employee Benefits Scheme. So I looked around, and you guessed it …I was drawn back to the local Subaru dealer. Like a kid in a candy store, there was lots of looking (no, that would be drooling) at these new shiny cars. I had never considered being able to own a current model vehicle...and there it was. Opening the unlocked door unveiled the stylish curves of the dash and the massive array of accessories. I was besotted. We traded my wife’s car in and I was now a proud owner of my third Subie - a 2008 Subaru 3.6 Tribeca Premium 5 Seat Wagon. Even though it was second hand, it still felt brand new. I have now driven approx. 70,000kms in the last 20 months. It is just a pleasure to drive. My wife works in Rosewood, so she was now the custodian of the Liberty. Particularly now that it was the ‘family car’. Almost like a racehorse being put out to pasture. December last year it was traded in on her new car (not a Subie so we won’t mention it). It was a sad day for me. Letting go was not as easy as I thought. I still reminisce 6 months later. I will pick up another Subaru in the future. It will be a play toy that will allow me to participate fully in the club activities. Some would call it a “Pantene Moment” … it won’t happen overnight, but it WILL happen.

BELLTHORPE – 14th October 2012 Just a short story this time. With myself operating true to form, I don’t have a clue where we went for the trip so I enlisted the supreme navigation skills from another, this time it was Dave Martin (Marto). As well as identifying the road we travelled, he also provided the following list of attendees and their Subies, or Subie wannabes. It was a fair turnout for the trip with Marto in the lead driving the Rhino Buggy. Thankfully, Marto had also stopped along the way to the meeting point and picked up a passenger (Wes Depper). I say thankfully as now there was someone in the Rhino to keep Marto awake for the long trip home, lol. The remainder of the crew for the trip were Dave Gibson (Gibbo), Noel (Poppy) Gibson and myself in the beasty black Forester, non-member Shaun and his family from the Sunshine Coast in another beasty Forester (with some Gucci modified Forester rims), Tom Scribner in his Suzuki Vitara V6 (a past member of about 20 years ago who downgraded from a lifted MY wagon to his current drive), Phil Stephan in his Land Rover Discovery diesel, (but don’t panic, he also owns a 04 Forester X auto and has recently re-joined the club), Dwayne Boyton in his blue Toyota Smurf, Mick and Marion Kos (M&M) in their beasty Forester, and finally there was Yarney running as Tail-EndCharlie in his Girlie Forester, complete with hair dryer. Yes, I may be a little jealous about the turbo. We all met up at the North bound BP at 8.30 with much entertainment on offer for car enthusiast such as us. The Caboolture Car club were also holding a run that Sunday with the same meeting point and although they got there first, M&M still managed to sneak their green beasty Foz into their line-up. I say their overall club’s standing went up a few notches with a Subie in their ranks because none of those muscle cars and older classics were carrying a spare tyre and shovel on their roofs. No ticker. An interesting snippet of trivia, they were also heading in a similar direction to us, noting that a sealed road would get them to their destination but a lot of dirt was on offer for us. Well, let’s get the trip specifics out of the way. Apparently, ‘we went in via Stoney Creek and climbed up the range and worked our way to the western end off the Jimna Rd and did the boundary loop’. Thanks Marto. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Ever heard of the adage, ‘I don’t think so Tim’. SO TRUE! As we were heading into the forest there came a distinct smell of smoke, thankfully not that bloody oil leak which I’m currently fighting in my Outback, but real good old fashioned forest smoke. A fire had recently gone through and blackened some of the area but didn’t pose any direct danger to us. It was mostly extinguished and with only a few fallen trees smouldering away but it did prove to be a good talking point for a while. Onward we went. Next we came to a fallen tree across the track. Marto was MIGHTY KEEN to get his new chain saw out to cut us a course to freedom and as usual everyone was there to help him. With tips from everyone, (obviously we were all chain saw operators in a previous life), Marto managed to hack through the tree trunks and limbs in no time and on our way we went again. \\\

Check out this poser and with some free advertising too, does he have shares in Makita???

A little further and a small tree in out path and then came a mass of trees and limbs blocking our way. The pic shows Marto skilfully gnawing away at the limbs with everyone else looking on (I would like to think of us as a support group). Honest, we all helped move the debris off the road once cut but where would the fun be in showing those pics.

Marto and his stand of “Helpers”

The next interesting part of the trip came where we inadvertently decided to take the more challenging route and go up the hill from hell instead of going down it. Most people had trouble with the hill. Marto in the Rhino spun wheel up the bad sections. Gibbo had troubles and rolled back for another go, this time Noel and I walked up the first steep section to cut down on weight and then I walked up the rest to lunch spot. Tom got up but with some slippage. Phil, when quizzed, said that he got up without problems but the Disco “laboured a little”. Right! I think he was saying that to make us feel better but Noel was thankful to get a lift to the top. Mick & Marion got up without tooooo many problems but Dwayne and the Smurf found it a tad challenging. I’m not sure what happened down there with Dwayne so you will have to ask him for specifics. Shaun kicked his family out somewhere along the track fearing he wouldn’t make it and he went ok. Tail-End-Charlie (Yarney) climbed up the hill under TURBO power and to rub it in, even stopped to pick up additional luggage (the Shaun family) and took them to the top. Good move, as walking up that hill was a bitch. And yes, did I mention earlier that I’m jealous about the TURBO! Lunch was called on top of the hill with some rejoicing and recapping about how everyone navigated and got up that hill/mountain. Discussion topics, what went wrong, how it could have been done better and there were a select few who were able to spruik about what they did right. With lunch downed, we too went down the other side of the hill and steep it was. Down, down, down with the seatbelt inertia locked-on for most of it. Mind you, nowhere near the challenge of the previous climb but tyres were skidding around with some measure of control (well that’s what it was like in Gibbo’s beast).

The start of the steep stuff. It’s hard to show the true degree of the climb. BLOOOODY STEEEEEP

Once down the bottom there was a short trail blaze through a more sedate forest roads with only moderate interests and then we came up to a ‘Y’ intersection with a special offer from Marto. Those who wanted to exit the run early could go to the right with the remainder to stay and I assume go to the left. Gibbo, Noel and I left first so I’m not certain what happened to the rest after that. Rumour has it that some followed suit and left shortly after us and those who stayed, only went for a short play in the forest and decided to ere on the side of caution and call it quits when they came up against another surprise challenge. So, until next time. Cheers

SOCIAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Hi all Firstly, I would like to thank Jan K for all his hard work over the past couple of years as Social Director and I’m sure with the help of other club members and my wife, I can keep things up to Jan’s standards. The run Monsidale Creek & Subaru XV ARB Promo day on the 28th October was a great day with 15 vehicles attending the trip. If you would like to see some photo’s for this trip, Jan has posted some on the AUSubaru forums. On Sunday 10th November the Condamine Gorge Trip was run, with another good turnout of 16 vehicles. On the upcoming agenda we have the Club’s Christmas Party on the 24th – 25th November at the Sea Breeze Caravan Park, South Ballina. There will be BBQ dinner on the Saturday night - $10 a head, kids under 12 free. Don’t forget there will be the club hamper again, remember last year it was huge. Each member is asked to donate a $10 gift for the raffle. The 1st of December is the QRC Rally Gallangowen and on the 2nd a day trip of the Gallangowen area. Check out our ‘What’s On’ pages in this Newsletter for full details or you can contact Dave Martin on 0429 121 996. We will be taking a short break from trips over the Christmas/New Year period. The first trip for 2013 will be Australia Day Long Weekend the 26th – 28th of January to Booloumba Creek. A site has been booked and paid for – however there are only 10 places left. If you are want to come on this trip, please see either Cherie or myself to pay ($5.45 per head per night) for your spot to be guaranteed. Please keep in mind, these are tent spots only. If you want to bring a camper or van, you will need arrange your own camp spot. If you happen to miss out on one of these booked spots, you can arrange an alternate booking for yourself, either by phoning 13 74 68 or online at: https://parks.nprsr.qld.gov.au If you are interested in running a trip or have an idea of an area that you would like to go visit, please let me know. Until next time. Luke Verschuren (SC 612)

RAINY DAYS A few months ago during a rainy spell I saw an Impreza on the back of a tray-top tow truck. Unfortunately it looked a little sad as it sat there with rear end damage. It looked liked the resulting impact from a vehicle that was unable to stop. I did not think much of it at the time. In a case of dejavu, last month again whilst a wet period prevailed, a Liberty was a passenger on a tray top going in the other direction. You guessed it, rear impact damage. After thinking about this, I realised that we are spoilt. The family of Subarus we all drive are vehicles that display superior handling and braking capabilities in most weather conditions. Obviously other cars may not be able to respond in the same way so we may need to make allowances for these poor unenlightened members of society that are yet to experience something that we probably take for granted. So be aware when you are next driving in the rain. Look around the traffic. The majority of vehicles on the road today may be fitted with refined features, driving enhancements, interactive accessories, gimmicks and other items that may promote sales for their respective manufacturers but there is one thing that they are lacking. And that is …Subaru DNA … and remember … it’s all for the driver … Phillip White (SC 644) =========================================================================
