DIGITAL GRAPEVINE RUMOURS ON MADIBA DIED A QUIET DEATH Yet another rumour had it that the elderly Nelson Mandela had died, but thanks to Twitter the gossip died quickly. It apparently followed news that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had been admitted to hospital. CARIEN DU PLESSIS reports. A few hours after the ANC sent out a statement on Tuesday wishing Mama Winnie Madikizela‐ Mandela a speedy recovery after a “successful .. minor foot operation”, which kept her in hos‐ pital overnight, the rumours about her ex‐hus‐ band started. Denials seemed to emerge on Twitter even before the actual allegations that former Presi‐ dent Nelson Mandela has died. Eyewitness News reporter Mandy Wie‐ ner tweeted that the rumour seemed to have started on Blackberry Messenger and asked her more than 16,000 followers to please not per‐ petuate it. Other journalists activated their carefully cultivated network of Madiba family members close to Madiba, who also denied his death. Presidency spokesman Mac Maharaj knew nothing about it either. One tweeter calling himself @plumbtifex even wryly commented that the advent of social Photo: REUTERS

media networks like Twitter and Blackberry had seen Mandela die many times. Mandela’s health had been a matter of na‐ tional concern, more so since a prolonged stay in hospital at the beginning of the year, which saw the world’s media camp outside the Milpark Hospital, and later in front of his Houghton home. In July, a few days before his birthday and what has now become Mandela Day, he moved back to his Qunu home, near the village where he was born, apparently for good. Rumours about Mandela’s death surface ev‐ ery few months, with far‐right‐wing groups fearing that his death would spark a slaugh‐ ter of whites by black people in what has been dubbed “the night of the long knives”. Mandela’s long‐time assistant Zelda la Grange eventually tweeted on Tuesday: “You want a rumour to stop? Stop speaking about it. Thank you!!” So rife were the rumours that #mandela trended in South Africa.

DESPERATELY SEEKING JULIUS: A SHOWMAN WITHOUT A SHOW The Julius Malema Disciplinary Hearings (the capitals are deliberate) have gone from the planned “twentytwenty bang-bang, you're out” affairs they were supposed to be to a Wagnerian five-day saga. In other words, it's going to take a long time. The eventual length of these proceedings will have implications for all the political figures involved. And possibly for the outcome as well. And his performance last night vindicated the choice: a masterclass in appropriate commemoration, interspersed with some earnest warnings as to South Africa’s judicial path. By REBECCA DAVIS. The reason for the sham verdict, Kentridge reminded us, was that the independence of the apartheid judiciary was undermined by biased judges appointed by the state. At this point there was an almost audible intake of breath from the audience seemingly putting two and two together about recent events around the appointment of the Chief Justice. And it did seem suddenly as if Kentridge might be heading for an explicit Mogoeng smackdown, saying that merit, not politics, should always be the criteria in judicial appointments (a statement met with loud applause from the audience). But Kentridge paused, allowed the clapping to cease, and then added pointedly that we should guard against “labelling any controversy a political appointment”. On the matter of the Secrecy Bill, which he never referred to by name, he was similarly trenchant, yet understated. All governments have secrets, and all governments want to keep them, he said, but "Biko's case shows us that wrongdoers should never be freed from the threat of exposure". JONATHAN’S GUNS LOOM OVER JOS After months of violence, President Goodluck Jonathan’s given his army a blank cheque to sort out the problem city of Jos. Citizens of Jos, be afraid. The Nigerian army doesn’t have a stellar record of conflict resolution, preferring their justice rough and their executions summary. By SIMON ALLISON. Jonathan has had enough. The violence in the north and central parts of his large, disparate country has grown worse since he came to power six months ago, with bombings, shootings and sectarian violence becoming a feature of daily life, almost unremarkable in cities like Jos and Maiduguri. In Jos alone, more than 100 have died in the past two weeks. The latest incident was a twin explosion in the centre of Jos on Sunday night, which, despite not killing anyone, left the population badly rattled. It was immediately followed by a meeting of governors of northern states who’ve said they would resort to vigilantism to solve the crisis if necessary. So Jonathan is doing what Nigerian leaders *$"+)04";6)#"46)'"O#*"46)80)39)0";746"46)7:" backs to the wall, facing a situation they don’t know how to control: he’s sending in the guns. Plateau State, the central Nigerian province of which Jos is the capital, bills itself rather optimistically – misguidedly – as “the home of peace and tourism”. It is the faultline of the Muslim‐Christian divide in Nigeria and has been synonymous with sectarian clashes for years. Not that the violence has all that much to do with religion; after all, Muslims and Christian live together all over Nigeria in peace. In Jos, the religious element is most often a grand pretext for inherently local issues.

IN A SHOW OF SELF-CONFIDENCE, TALIBAN ATTACKS US'S AFGHANISTAN HEART The battle for Afghanistan continued on Tuesday as a multi-pronged attack by Taliban militants sowed chaos and confusion in the capital Kabul. GOP TAMPA DEBATE ZEROES IN ON RICK PERRY Anointed by the newest polling data, Republican front-runner Rick Perry was in the crosshairs of all of the other participants in the most recent debate over who will challenge Barack Obama come November 2012. By J BROOKS SPECTOR. The Monday evening debate, moderated by Wolf Blitzer and cosponsored by CNN and the Tea Party Express, a rather obviously partisan political action body, took place in Tampa, Florida. Florida is a state crucial for both parties’ hopes. Reliably Democratic for almost a century, Florida is probably the largest state that is consistently in play in American general elections.

Back in 1965, as he was about to sign the landmark Civil Rights Act he had bulldozed through Congress, then‐President Lyndon Johnson (a Texan himself) famously told a political friend that once he signed this bill and made it law he doomed the Democratic Party’s chances in the South for at least a Photo: Mitt Romney and Rick Perry. AMAZON

AMAZON TO LAUNCH NETFLIX-STYLE BOOKSTORE Would you subscribe to an online library? Amazon thinks you would. Some say that they are planning to launch a rental bookstore for ebooks in the Netflix mould. Amazon themselves don’t appear to be terribly bullish about the idea – their ebook library will only be available to a few. By SIPHO HLONGWANE According to the Washington Post, Amazon is thinking about making an online library for ebooks available to Amazon Prime subscrib‐ ers. For $79 a year, Amazon Prime subscribers get online video and unlimited deals on two‐ day shipping – and if the Wall Street Journal’s sources quoted by the Post are correct, access to an Amazon library. This will be a library in the proper sense of the word – only old titles will be available, and there is a limit on the amount of books each subscriber will be able to read for free per month. The new service should go nicely with the new Amazon Kindle 4, which analysts say is something of an iPad rival. The company itself has not an‐ nounced when it will launch the new Kindle, but it could be before the end of 2011.

ANGRY BIRDS, THE SMASHING GAME CHANGER It’s a ridiculously simple game that has made its way into hundreds of millions of mobile devices around the world. Its wild success took its creators by surprise, but they are responding now. If you’ve never heard of Angry Birds, the Star Wars of mobile gaming, now would be a good time to get acquainted. By SIPHO HLONGWANE What do you do when you accidentally create the world’s next craze? Figure out if it’s marketable, if you’re of the ruthless cut of cloth. But what happens when you were just arsing about when you created something that quite literally everyone wants a piece of? 9/11

WILL IT EVER BE APPROPRIATE TO TELL 9/11 JOKES? Is it too soon to tell jokes about 9/11? British comedian Jimmy Carr received an answer to that question in the way of an overwhelming "yes" when he risked a relatively mild September 11 gag last weekend. By REBECCA DAVIS. On the day of the 9/11 anniversary, Carr tweeted: "Sept 11th: date of terrible air disaster. When Eastern Airlines Flt 212 crashed in 1974. Killing 69. No one will forget that in a hurry". The re‐ sponse was one of outrage: many of Carr’s Twit‐ ter followers unfollowed him in protest immedi‐ ately. DJOKERS WILD: IS NOVAK THE BEST EVER? When David Foster-Wallace wrote his rapturous piece on Roger Federer for The New York Times Magazine, a piece often lauded by people who don’t read sports essays as the best sports essay of all time, Roger Federer was considered by people who don’t watch tennis as the greatest tennis player of all time. Perhaps it’s time for a reappraisal. By RICHARD POPLAK. Men’s tennis is currently enjoying a gilded age. There are three players on the scene, all more or less in their prime, playing the game as the gods would. Like every endeavour, tennis is subject to the laws of progress: It gets incrementally faster, tougher and more specialised every time it’s played. This doesn’t ipso facto make it better than it was in the days of, say, Arthur Ashe. But watch a game from that era—before the likes of Rafael Nadal’s parents were born—and you’ll wonder if it was shot underwater, with a slo‐mo camera, by a cinematographer on Valium. This isn’t to denigrate the legendary Ashe. Rather, to point out how careful we need to be

when we bandy about tag “the best of all time”. Ashe played the game as well as he could, in a time before racquet and shoe companies spent more on R&D than the continent of Africa does on malaria medication. Ashe bequeathed a long line of excellence on players that steadily built on the game—from Connors to Borg to McEnroe to Sampras, to name but a few. We learnt how Federer “warped time”, and his ability to invert physical possibility through his inherent tennis genius. The piece concerned the art of watching Federer play tennis as much as it did Federer’s actual tennis playing, but it still managed to get one or two of the intangibles wrong. It was shocking.
