Many women are experimenting with manipulating their natural curl pattern and some are even experimenting with extensions that mimic curly and kinky curly texture. Cute half up and half down styles are also making its way back, with a chic and modern twist of course. Sleek high buns and pony tails are amazing for this season as well; although, for people who live in colder climates, this often isn’t a good idea. On the other hand this hairstyle gives you an excuse to do a little extra with makeup. Long styled bobs are even more gorgeous than neck length bobs. The mature look is beautiful for broad face beauties!

PROTECTIVE BRAIDS >

Hair health is at its all-time high for women. Hairfinity, the Mane choice, Shea moisture, Mixed Chicks, Organix and chi products just to name a few seem to be a hair household name now. Cute half up and half down styles are also making it way back, with a chic and modern twist of course! Protective styling braids are also popular this year, but not just regular summer brandy braids but corn rows! Corn rows have been seen on celebrities like Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and Keri Hilson. It’s a simple and quick style to last until the cold approaches. This style is actually great for maintaining a healthy scalp too! Loose, messy and playful looking goddess braids are a great way to offset and take away the seriousness of dark lip colours for this season.

CORN ROWS >

As far as color is concerned ladies have been seen to be keeping more natural colored hair nowadays. However, on the more radical spectrum (no negative connotation here) bleach blonde hair has been seen with braids and regular styles – and it actually works!

Don’t be afraid to be adventurous with your makeup this season – it’s the time to try those looks that you’ve been eyeballing on instagram and facebook! Subnation is a trend twhich takes diversity and influences from a number of different cultures to combine what is considered to be an evolved style clash, that reflects the aesthetics of the 1980’s & today’s modern style. It’s a style embraced heavily by today’s millenial culture.

AUTUMN LOVE

Aside from winter, autumn seems to be one of my favourite times of the year. The simple acts of nature just move me in a way that I cannot explain. An assorted array of colours from orange, yellow, red, purple and brown simultaneously with the cool breeze transforms you in to a form of comfort and sudden elation. But enough about nature and more about the food! This is where the beauty lies; in the variety of fruits and vegetables that spring up and seizes your mind into a worldwind of ideas and creative recipes.

PARSNIP & CAULIFLOWER SOUP I know what you are thinking…parsnip and cauliflower?!?! But, trust me these two unruffled vegetables can be revived into something amazing. Not only do parsnips contain foliate and vitamin C, but can be a great substitute to mashed potatoes. This sweet, slightly peppery soup will even have your kids dancing in glory. Ingredients 1 medium onion (finely chopped) 4 medium parsnips (peeled and diced) ½ medium cauliflower (chopped into pieces) 2 cloves garlic (finely crushed) 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (finely chopped) 1 teaspoon butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pint of milk 1 pint vegetable stock

Method -In a heavy pan, melt a little olive oil and butter. Add onions, ginger, garlic and sauté gently for 10 minutes until the onions are soft. - Add parsnips and cauliflower, turn the heat very low, place the lid on and sweat gently until nearly soft, (about 5 minutes). Add the stock and the milk and with the lid on, simmer gently for 30 minutes - Liquidize with a hand-held blender serve with a swish of garlic olive oil. 38

PUMPKIN WAFFLES W/ MAPLE GLAZE I don’t know about you, but just the sound of this makes my mouth water in anticipation. I love to take on classic recipes and convert it into something with a bit of an edge. And to make it a bit healthier, you can always substitute the all- purpose flour with whole wheat and the milk with fat-free milk. (Sorry there are no substitutes for the alcohol!) Ingredients 1 ½ cup flour 2 tablespoon baking powder ¼ cup brown sugar 2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1 ¼ cup milk ½ cup canned pumpkin 1 tablespoon canola oil

Method -In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients. Then in a small bowl whisk together the egg, milk, pumpkin and oil to incorporated. Pour wet mixture into dry and stir. -Spray waffle iron with cooking spray and add ½ cup of batter onto grids. -Cook with waffle iron instruction (about 4 minutes)

BOURBON MAPLE SYRUP Ingredients 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon maple flavor ¼ cup bourbon Method -Bring all of the ingredients to a boil, continuing to boil until all of the sugar has melted, stirring throughout. SPICY HOT CHOCOLATE Nothing warms the heart more than a good cup of homemade chocolate. Even in the Bahamas! Be creative and try any toppings that you like. Mines happen to be marshmallows and Nutella. Ingredients 3 cups milk 6 tablespoon sugar 2 tablespoon brown sugar 4 tablespoon cocoa powder 2tablespoon instant coffee granules 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon salt Method -Place all ingredients, except the toppings, in a medium-sized saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, constantly whisking, for 2 to 3 minutes, or until heated through. -Pour into four coffee cups and top with any toppings that you desire.

>HEAVY ROTATION Nearly a half decade after his last full length album “20Ten”, the Purple One debuts a brand new project full of all the greatness that he’s known for. Art Official Age (Which is a play on the words “Artificial Age”), marks the thirty-third album for the funk and rock veteran and his first since the nineties to be released under both his lable NPG Record and Warner Bros. Whom he recently went back under license with. For Those of you that don’t remember it was Warner Bros that pretty much single handedly led Prince to the changing of his name to a symbol and therefore being called “The Artist Formally Known As Prince”, through a falling out he had with the label at the time. I Guess the patched up the loose ends and came together to discuss their differences, because the duo have started the cycle of putting out music together again.

ART OFFICIAL AGE PRINCE

But back to this album. It was being talked about for quite awhile before actually came to be. The lead single “Breakfast Can Wait”, a fun record with a simple message was released to the public in early 2013, giving hope to the fans that a new album was on it’s way. but the wait would prove to be long and dreary, as the next singles “Clouds” & “Breakdown” wouldn’t be released until September 2014 just weeks before the newly announced album released date of Sep 30th. For all the fans of funk, rock, soul and just good music; this album is on to check out and it’s unlike anything else you’ve listened to for the year and for some of you…ever

I hoped you enjoyed this article. Let me know what you thought and it might end up in the next issue. Tweet me @tkdadon and let me know your opinion!

> MYTIMEISNOW SOULJAH SHADDY

Showtime Souljah Shaddy. Well, the kid has been putting in work. There’s no denying that. His work ethic is ridiculously great from what the local artists he’s worked with have to say. Late nights in the studio, on every local concert; whether on the stage or working the sound behind it, producing local hits for the majority of the top local artists of every genre. There seems to be no stopping him. Shaddy is another artist who got a lot of attention during the STypz era. When producer partners Zoltan & Charlie Brown scooped him up and added him to the roster it wasn’t to make him great, it was to make him better, while making their team a stronger one musically. Shaddy started out doing mainly his production thing, which he’s still most known for today; but every now and again he’d hope on some record to show that he could at least hold his own with emcees. Later on, Shaddy entered the arena of live mixing and sound, something that it has been said is far more difficult to do than mixing from behind a computer in a

studio. Wherever and whatever kind, when it comes to the boards it’s a lie to say that the kid can’t do his job and do it well. During his time as a producer, engineer etc. Shaddy has had the time to not only produce records for countless artists locally, but to produce a full mixtape for himself in 2011. The mixtape project “Perry Ingraham: Welcome to the House of Parliament”, which included the radio single “Welcome To My Hood” would be the last mixtape project Shaddy would release up until his newly released mixtape “Game Changers” which he put together along with his group HDBoyz. The mixture has been getting some positive reviews over the past few months. Some catching hooks and dope beats from the crew that clims the best producers on the island makes a pretty good mixture for a mixtape. The new mixtape “Game Changers” is available both in physical versions and on mixtape networking sites like the popular “datpiff.com”.

>ARTISTWATCH ADRIA

We’ve been watching Adria’s career since she signed on with STypz (former entertainment group), what seems like forever ago. Since then that team has disbanded, she’s joined other teams, decided to drop the “Jenee” from her name and is continuing the push with her music. This young, talented, star in the making has been getting praise for her writing and singing since she made her debut on the STypz presented So$aMan & MDeez single “Radio” back in 2010 and even before that she was getting the love by racking up thousands of views on youtube, as early as 2007 doing covers of other artists songs and throwing in a few of her own songs here and there. Adria has always written her own music, but as of late she’s also added the title of producer to her belt strap, with a new EP titled “Amaretto” released along side her new management team ThreeAmigosMedia. This EP shows just how much she’s grown as an artist and songwriter since she first

came into the view of the public. The project shows that she has been doing the music thing for awhile even though it’s her first full release. Amaretto comes complete with a total of nine tracks produced solely by Adria for the most part with some help from local producer team HDBoyz members Sniper and PC. Features are minimal and include her cousin Daynez (who gained popularity earlier in the year with his song “Ha’d go”), Jay Complex who featured Adria on his past two mixture releases “Underdog ii” and “religionROUGE” respectively along with a feature from longtime friend S.B. Dread on the song “Unsure”. If you haven’t heard of this young siren (which by now is kind of unlikely), go google her and while you’re doing that go get your copy of her EP Amaretto.

...............................................................

“I’m in a dream, wake me up because this cannot be real”

Have you ever doubted yourself? Have you ever been pushed to do something that you didn’t want to do? Well, you’re not alone. 242 Untapped Winner Anna Calixte was pushed into her destiny after entering the competition that she later won. Yet, Anna didn’t always want to pursue “singing” as a career. “I really knew I wanted to sing when I graduated from High School, but before then I wanted to be a pediatric cardiologist, but when I thought about it; I don’t like needles, I don’t like blood and I didn’t like Biology that much and I realized that it wasn’t something that my heart was in”; said Anna. Singing from the age of 5, Anna always knew she had a voice and was able to sing in front of crowds of hundreds of people without fear. She auditioned for the competition and later advanced to the next round. Swiftly progressing to the top, Anna finally realized that her auditioning into the competition was not in vain. On the night of the Finale, Anna’s name was called the winner of 242 Untapped. “It was like; I’m in a dream wake me up because this cannot be real. I really couldn’t control my emotions at one point I wanted to cry”; said Anna. Since the show, Anna has been working hard in the studio recording new music for her upcoming release which is due early 2015. Meanwhile she has released her new single “I Love the Lord” which is the winning song she sang at the finale of the competition. Ann said that her family has been a huge support to her from the beginning. “From the day after, everyone was asking me when does the CD come out? And we have to be first to buy it before everyone else, we want the world to know we support you. They constantly called me asking me about the single coming out and when they heard the single, OMG! My family alone purchased all”; she laughed. Anna is of Haitian descent and a Bahamian citizen. She wanted to include both languages into her music. She wants to bridge the gap between the Bahamian and Haitian community and she feels the only way that she can do that is through her music. On her upcoming release, her new music will be a mixture of many genres such as; Rake n Scrape, Junkanooo, R&B, Contemporary Gospel and Haitian genre called “Compas”. Her new music will have a positive message that she wants to spread not only in the Bahamas but to the world. “I would like my listeners, family, friends and those who will eventually come into contact with my music to know that God loves you and cares so much about you. No matter what situation you are faced with God is still in control and able to see you through.” Anna would also like to start her tertiary education next year by studying music. You can look forward to Anna being a household name as she continues to impact lives through her music. Her future is looking bright and She is certainly a Winner!

THE OCTOBER ISSUE

With everything that is going on in today’s society, it has become extremely easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life. Pressures from work, relationships, school, children, family, friends, and associates may have us feeling bogged down and pulled in every direction. Your whole day is spent putting out fires and rising to the occasion, and it would seem that you only have time to rest enough to do it all again tomorrow. Or perhaps your life is the opposite. Maybe you have a comfortable relationship and job, and your 9-5 is cushioned by days with very low stress levels. Regardless of whether you are too free or too busy, my question to you is: What time have you set aside for yourself in the day? For me, the answer is NONE. Unfortunately, I would say that my days are spent worrying about everything but myself, and generally do not include things that I want to do or enjoy doing for myself. As a result, I’ve developed a bad habit of not eating on time and neglecting to drink enough water because my thoughts are on everything but, me. As I’m writing this, I find myself reflecting on friends who I have lost this past year, and people that I know who have lost loved ones this year as well. Thinking about taking time for myself reminds me of the sting of death, where suddenly we remember to slow down, to take care of ourselves, to dream the impossible dream and to fulfil our purposes. However, this is usually fleeting, and we do not remember to do so until the next time death visits our doorsteps again. This is usually the process when we think of taking time for ourselves, engaging in quiet time and meditation. As it turns out, taking time out for yourself and even engaging in meditation can be very beneficial for you. According to artofliving.org, meditation can help to prevent stress and releases accumulated stress in your system. Physically, meditation can assist in lowering blood pressure, improving your immune system, and improve your mood and behavior. Mentally, meditation can increase emotional stability, happiness, and help you to gain clarity and peace of mind. Though it may seem a bit silly at first, setting aside some time in your day just for you, is arguably the best thing you can do for yourself. Turn off the electronic devices and cell phones, find a quiet space that needs to be respected by those around you, and spend a few minutes with yourself. Whether you prefer quiet meditation or prayer, or just a time to hear yourself think and process your thoughts, it is imperative for your sanity. We tend to put so many things above ourselves, and then build resentment for those that do not put us in the same positions we put them in our lives, when we should put ourselves first in our own lives. If you’re not sure where to start, of course there is an app for that! Apps like “The Mindfulness App”, “Simply Being”, “Get Some Headspace” and “Calm” can assist with getting you into making time for yourself. I like an app called Chillax where I can select the calming music I wish to listen to and the length of time I want it to play for.
