The housing market is on the upswing and our local businesses are continuing to blossom. Florida’s real estate market is coming back with interest rates falling to reasonable levels. Lower interest rates can lead to increased demand for homes, potentially driving up property prices. Additionally, lower interest rates can also make it more attractive for individuals to invest in real estate as an asset class, further stimulating the market. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on Florida's real estate market and interest rates, it's advisable to consult with local real estate professionals, economists, or financial experts who have access to the latest data and insights specific to your area of interest. Additionally, keeping an eye on reputable real estate market reports and news sources can provide valuable information on current trends and forecasts. Thank you for your continued support of Orlando Style Magazine. We value your readership and are always striving to bring you the best. We all wish and hope for peace in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as all the other areas in turmoil, let’s try to live together and enjoy life with tolerance. Wishing you a beautiful spring season, Live, love, laugh…

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

ST YLE EV ENTS, NE WS & GOSSI P FR O M A R O U N D O R L A N D O

By Riesa Pascal

Love wasn’t the only thing in the air last month! There was also a buzz of excitement in and around Central Florida as we entered into the second month of 2024. February was a tremendously busy season jam packed with fantastic not-to-be missed events and we’ve got all the highlights right here. So dig out your leftover Valentine’s chocolate, sit back, relax and check out all our monthly recap of Orlando’s best events, just in case you missed it! Held from January 12–February 19, the Epcot Festival of the Arts was a celebration of art and became the perfect bridge between the decorations of the Festival of the Holidays and the bright florals that the Flower and Garden Festival brings. The focus for the festival is all about the arts, with offerings broken up into 3 categories: Culinary Arts, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. Food is art, and for this festival, the chefs of Epcot create visual masterpieces that are both a feast for the eyes and the stomach! But what would an Epcot festival be without entertainment? One of the highlights of Festival of the Arts was the Disney on Broadway concert series at the American Garden Theatre located at The American Adventure pavilion in the World Showcase. With over 100 artists, plus fun photo ops and opportunities to create your own art, there was plenty to see and do in Visual Arts as well. The biggest science fiction, horror and anime event in the Southeast returned to Orlando from February 1-4. Megacon Orlando 2024 gave attendees 4 jam-packed days of mixing with comic book stars and an array of attractions, including the Master of Cosplay Southeast qualifier, Celebrity Photo Ops, Autograph Sessions, Tattoo Pavilion, Artist Alley, and Star Wars Events by the 501st Legion just to name a few. Plenty of stars were happy to

A RECAP OF FEBRUARY IN CENTRAL FLORIDA: A WHIRLWIND OF EXCITEMENT!

sign autographs, pose for photos or just participate in casual meet-and-greets. Cosplay guests were in abundance at the event including Jessica Nigri, Soni Aralynn and plenty more. The winter months are very popular for BBQ festivals and February was a big month for an array of tasty days in Central Florida such as the sizzling excitement of Davenport’s Grills Gone Wild Event and the Annual Tom Fellows Classic Car Show! From February 9-10, attendees indulged in live entertainment, explored unique vendors, and savored the taste of BBQ delights. Not only did the barbecue competition partner with the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) for the first time, but it was also one of three barbecue competition events included in the inaugural Triple Crown of BBQ. This second leg of the Triple Crown competition included live music + food trucks, kids zone, multiple vendors, and professional judging of pitmaster-created barbecue eats with select tastings offered. SeaWorld Orlando is known for having festivals almost year-round and one of the biggest festivals of the year is the Seven Seas Food Festival. This event is included with park admission, and takes place on select dates between February 2 and May 19. Billed as Orlando’s largest theme park food festival, the event features 28 marketplaces and 13 live concerts across several weeks of festivities. Celebrating tastes and cuisines across the seven seas, the event welcomes over 200 chef and mixologist-curated dishes, and has expanded their marketplaces to include Ireland and Sicily. While the festival is very much a festival, it is a decidedly family-friendly affair, with plenty to do to entertain little ones while parents enjoy the food and drinks offered throughout the

park. The fun continues till May 19th so head on over to Seaworld and don’t miss out on the tasty action! Tourists and locals alike turned out for the biggest party in Florida featuring family fun, live music and delicious food. Universal Mardi Gras ran daily from February 3 and will continue through April 7. The event boasts an eclectic global food fest with more than 70 delectable dishes and beverages from multiple locations around the globe. For entertainment there is a Big Easy bash in the streets with energetic dancers and stilt performers in extraordinary costumes, brass band musicians and countless beads. The Mardi Gras Tribute Store is stocked with brand new merchandise and will be open throughout the festival. Visitors can even upgrade their experience with a Mardi Gras Float Ride and Dine Experience that allows them to toss beads from a Mardi Gras float during the event’s dazzling parade and enjoy a 3-course meal at The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar, NBC Sports Grill and Brew, Finnegan’s Bar and Grill or Lombard’s Seafood Grille. Best of all, no extra ticket is required as all Mardi Gras events are included in your regular ticket. Ahead of the debut of the Seven Seas Food Festival, SeaWorld Orlando announced some of the fun and flavors guests could expect for its limited-time Mardi Gras celebration and they did not disappoint! From February 8-18, guests at the park delighted in the sights, sounds and flavors of New Orleans’ which included a popup parade, live music, a street party and an assortment of food and drinks. Unlike in year’s past, the vibrant flair of Brazil’s Carnival was put on full display along the Pipeline Pathway. The area featured bright décor, samba dancers and the Brazilian Market. The fan-favorite marketplace

served up exquisite dishes including Galinhada, Picanha Steak and Pão de Queijo. Meanwhile, over at the Gulf Coast Market, guests could even enjoy Beignets, a Mardi Gras (and personal) favorite. Central Floridians helped make a difference to thousands of shelter pets by heading to the 29th Annual Paws in the Park on Saturday, February 10th at Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando. As Orlando’s largest dog festival, Paws in the Park featured a pet costume contest, activities for big and small dogs, photo stations, a vendor marketplace, tasty food trucks, Pet Alliance swag, and more! The event was held in support of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, the region’s oldest and largest animal welfare agency.

BARFLY

CRAFTING THE PERFECT

IRISH COFFEE!

A Step-by-Step Guide to Elevate Your St. Patrick's Day Celebration Ingredients: 16 oz. hot water 2 tsp. light brown sugar 1 cup brewed coffee 2 oz. Irish whiskey (such as Jameson) 1/2 cup heavy cream for topping Chocolate shavings, for garnish Instructions: Begin by filling two mugs with hot water and allowing them to sit for about 2 minutes. Pour out the water and add 1 teaspoon of light brown sugar to each mug. Pour over hot coffee and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then, pour in the Irish whiskey. In a separate bowl, using an electric mixer or whisking by hand, beat the cream until soft peaks form. The cream should be thick but still pourable. Top the coffee mixture with the whipped cream by gently pouring it over the back of a warm spoon to create a thick layer on top of the coffee. Garnish each mug with a sprinkle of chocolate shavings for an extra touch of indulgence. Notes: While we prefer brown sugar for its caramel molasses notes that complement the whiskey, you can also use granulated sugar or natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. Just keep in mind that each will bring its own distinct flavor to the finished drink. For the authentic Irish coffee experience, stick with Irish whiskey like Jameson. However, feel free to experiment with other whiskey varieties if desired. When whipping the cream, aim for a consistency where it forms soft peaks but is still pourable. Test readiness by observing if the peak formed by the whisk flops and curls over on itself. If it stays pointing straight up, the cream has been overwhipped.

HEALTH

Dr. Will Cole is a leading functional medicine practitioner, author, and teacher. He is known for his expertise in chronic conditions, particularly in the areas of autoimmune disorders, thyroid dysfunction, and hormonal health.

By Josie Nejame

an interview with

Dr. Will Cole 24 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

HEALTH

Dr. Cole has a unique approach to health and wellness, focusing on identifying the root causes of illness and using a holistic approach to treatment. His work emphasizes the importance of personalized medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle interventions. In recent years, Dr. Cole has gained attention for his advocacy of the ketogenic diet and its potential benefits for various health conditions. He has authored several books on the topic and has been featured in numerous media outlets, sharing his knowledge and insights on functional medicine and integrative health. He is also the host of the popular The Art of Being Well podcast and bestselling author of Ketotarian, Gut Feelings, The Inflammation Spectrum, and the New York Times bestseller Intuitive Fasting. Dr. Cole’s approach to patient care is highly individualized, and he emphasizes the role of diet, gut health, and environmental factors in overall well-being. His commitment to empowering patients to take control of their health has made him a respected figure in the field of functional medicine. In between taking care of his clients at his telehealth medical clinic, sharing health stories with his good friends health advocates and beauty icons Elle Macpherson, Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow, he is an advisor for organic beauty line Agent Nateur’s Holi mane/radiance and Kroma Wellness. Even though Dr.Cole has been my doctor for years it’s still surreal to see him on talk shows with Drew Berrymore or hear him interviewing icons. He’s down to earth, passionate about his work, a family man and eager to help as many people as possible to feel better. I know my health changed for the better the moment we decided to work together. Here I ask him some questions while he takes in his daily walk.

How does your personal wellness routine align with your professional philosophy? My personal wellness routine deeply aligns with my professional philosophy, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the root causes of health issues through functional medicine. This approach involves personalized healthcare, utilizing diagnostic testing and analysis rarely done in conventional settings, to provide targeted treatment plans for individuals. My routine mirrors this holistic and tailored approach to health, focusing on diet, stress management, and lifestyle changes to maintain optimal health. As you see on my Instagram stories, I do practice what I teach. Is there a piece of advice that your father gave you that you hold true in your practice every day? To be of service to people, work hard and treat other people the way I would want to be treated.

You have seen clients when they finally come to you and they are at their lowest point, after many doctors have told them that it’s in their head or there’s not much that they can do for them. Are you now seeing the shift where clients are coming in before they reach that point? The shift in patients seeking functional medicine care before reaching their lowest point is happening more and more. This change is likely due to growing awareness and understanding of functional medicine’s benefits, offering a more holistic and preventive approach to health care. People are becoming more proactive about their health, seeking to address issues at their onset rather than as a last resort. A big topic today is longevity and I have so many options for both people who are fighting and illness as well as people who to live life to the fullest for as long as possible.

How are you maintaining balance in work and family these days?

It’s true, social media is obsessed with your posts. Tell us the process of creating these ah ha and repost moments.

Balancing work and family life in the demanding field of functional medicine, especially when consulting clients worldwide via telehealth, requires a deliberate effort to prioritize health, family time, and self-care amidst a busy schedule. The practices I advocate for, like mindfulness, nutritional balance, and rest, are not only for my patients but are principles I strive to embody in my own life to maintain this balance. Recently, my son started his own podcast and its been amazing to see my influence over him and his entrepreneur spirit.

Creating content that resonates with my audience involves blending deep, insightful information with simplicity and accessibility. The process likely involves drawing from my extensive experience in functional medicine, patient stories, and the latest research to craft messages that enlighten and inspire. Making complex health concepts understandable and relatable is key to sparking those “light bulb moments” among readers and followers and I’m not afraid to post controversial topics to engage in healthy conversations. MANAGE YOUR THOUGHTS "Taking control of stress involves a holistic approach that addresses physical, mental, and emotional well-being." By Natalie Smith

30 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

HEALTH

Managing stress is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. Here are some effective strategies to help you gain control over stress in your life. Firstly, prioritize self-care. Incorporate regular exercise into your routine, as physical activity is known to reduce stress hormones and trigger the release of endorphins, which act as natural mood lifters. Additionally, ensure you get enough sleep, as a well-rested body and mind are better equipped to handle stress. Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools for stress management. Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your nervous system and focus on the present moment. Engaging in activities like yoga or tai chi can also promote relaxation and enhance your overall sense of well-being. Establishing a balanced and healthy lifestyle includes maintaining a nutritious diet. Certain foods, such as those rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, can positively impact your mood and stress levels. Avoid excessive caffeine and sugar intake, as they may contribute to heightened stress and anxiety. Effective time management is another key aspect of stress control. Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps and prioritize them based on importance. This approach helps prevent feeling overwhelmed and allows you to tackle challenges systematically. Cultivating a strong support system is essential. Share your thoughts and concerns with friends, family, or a trusted colleague. Social connections provide emotional support and may offer different perspectives on the challenges you face.

Learn to set realistic goals and expectations for yourself. Perfectionism can lead to unnecessary stress, so be kind to yourself and acknowledge that not everything has to be flawless. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and recognize that setbacks are a natural part of life. Incorporating hobbies and activities you enjoy into your routine can be a great stress reliever. Whether it’s reading, gardening, or playing a musical instrument, engaging in activities that bring you joy provides an outlet for stress and promotes a sense of fulfillment. Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial. Disconnect from work emails and responsibilities during designated non-working hours to prevent burnout. Setting aside time for relaxation and leisure helps recharge your energy for the challenges ahead. If stress persists, consider seeking professional help. A mental health professional can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs. Therapy, counseling, or even support groups can offer valuable tools for managing stress and building resilience. In conclusion, taking control of stress involves a holistic approach that addresses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By incorporating these strategies into your lifestyle, you can create a foundation for resilience and effectively navigate the challenges that life may bring.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity Through Food

Embracing Plant-Based Proteins

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, so too does our culinary landscape. In 2024, expect to see a greater appreciation for cultural diversity in food, with consumers seeking out dishes and ingredients from around the globe. Whether it’s Korean kimchi, Indian curries, or Mexican mole, embracing culinary traditions from different cultures not only broadens our culinary horizons but also fosters a greater sense of understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of human experience.

With concerns about sustainability and animal welfare on the rise, more people are turning to plant-based sources of protein as an alternative to traditional meat products. From lentils and chickpeas to tofu and tempeh, the options for plant-based protein are endless and delicious. Not only are these foods better for the planet, but they also offer a host of health benefits, including lower saturated fat content and higher fiber and antioxidant levels. As the plant-based movement continues to gain momentum, expect to see an even greater variety of plant-based protein options hitting the shelves in 2024.

Saying Goodbye to Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners In a bid to reduce sugar intake and promote overall health, consumers are increasingly ditching artificial sweeteners and seeking out natural alternatives. From stevia and monk fruit to date syrup and honey, there’s a growing awareness of the potential dangers of artificial sweeteners and a renewed appreciation for the sweetness of nature. This shift towards natural sweeteners reflects a broader trend towards clean eating and a desire for simpler, more wholesome ingredients.

Adding Spice to Life Get ready to turn up the heat in 2024, as spicy foods take center stage in the world of culinary trends. From fiery hot sauces to tongue-tingling chili peppers, consumers are embracing bold flavors and adventurous taste sensations like never before. Not only do spicy foods add excitement to meals, but they also offer a host of health benefits, including increased metabolism and improved cardiovascular health. So, if you’re ready to spice up your life, be sure to stock up on your favorite chili peppers and hot sauces this year.

Cultivating Gut Health Through Food One of the most significant shifts in recent years has been the growing emphasis on gut health and its profound implications for overall well-being. With emerging research highlighting the crucial role of the gut microbiome in everything from digestion to mood regulation, consumers are increasingly seeking out foods that promote gut health. Fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, and sauerkraut have surged in popularity, thanks to their probiotic properties that support a healthy gut flora. Additionally, prebiotic-rich foods such as bananas, oats, and onions are gaining traction for their ability to nourish beneficial gut bacteria, paving the way for a happier, healthier digestive system.

Choline: The Unsung Hero of Nutrition While vitamins and minerals often steal the spotlight, choline is quietly emerging as a nutritional powerhouse deserving of attention. Essential for brain development, muscle control, and liver function, choline

plays a vital role in maintaining overall health. Yet, despite its importance, many people fall short of meeting their daily choline needs. In response, there’s a growing interest in choline-rich foods such as eggs, chicken, and broccoli, as well as choline supplements to fill the gap and ensure optimal health. In conclusion, the health food trends of 2024 promise to bring a wealth of exciting opportunities for those looking to nourish their bodies and souls. From embracing cultural diversity to cultivating gut health through food and exploring innovative sources of protein, there’s never been a better time to explore the vibrant world of healthy eating. So, grab your fork and get ready to embark on a delicious journey towards a happier, healthier you.

Get into the

SPRING SEASON By Omayra La Bella

42 | STYLETOME.COM

BEAUTY

Spring is a season of growth and development; it is a time to revitalize yourself and make positive changes in your life. My best practices for springtime wellness can give you the boost you need to reach your greatest potential. Just simply follow these tips and begin to feel lighter in body, mind, and spirit, as the springtime days grow warmer and longer.

Elevate Your Wellness with These Simple Practices to Flourish and Rejuvenate Get up Early! Winter is the season of hibernation. The gloomy, overcast days and chilly weather can entice you to stay in bed as long as possible, unless you have somewhere to be. Many of us sleep much later than we should by springtime, (GUILTY) and it can be difficult to break that habit. One of my best wellness recommendations is to start rising earlier. You will be able to start your day with so much more time. Additionally, there will be longer days overall, giving you more time to read, work out, unwind with a cup of tea, and do anything else you like. Get More Steps in Outdoors The weather is becoming warmer now, which makes it the ideal time to go for more walks! One of the most important wellness ideas to remember is to get outside and enjoy the best of springtime. Consider taking a stroll, setting off on a hike, or starting your garden early. Sunlight and clean air will undoubtedly benefit your body. Walking is the ideal lowimpact workout that strengthens your heart without making you feel exhausted or achy. Additionally, it is simple to get in more steps each day by using the stairs instead of the car or walking to local errands. The last thing you want to be when spring arrives is too exhausted and out of shape to walk about. You will become the best version of yourself by walking to shed extra winter weight and speed up your metabolism. It is also a fantastic way to decompress and lift your spirits. I personally love to take evening walks with my family. Protect Yourself from the Sun The first warm days of spring are exhilarating, but you must remember to shield yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Make sure you are protecting any exposed skin with SPF and avoiding lengthy exposure to the sun. For extra protection when you are outside, it is

also a good idea to wear some sunglasses and a sunhat with a wide brim. There is nothing better for me than to accessorize with some nice shades and a beautiful hat! Consume Fresh Produce Your diet efforts may be weakened by winter because of all the unhealthy comfort foods, baking, and, of course, the holidays. They taste great, especially on a chilly winter’s night, but they might make you feel heavy and bloated. Eat a diet rich in spring seasonal, fresh produce. Consuming an abundance of raw fruits and vegetables helps expedite the cleansing process, leaving you feeling renewed, nourished, and full of energy. They also include an abundance of vitamins and nutrients that your body requires to function at its best. Spring meals are a great option for a healthier spring because they are lighter than the filling, grounded foods of winter. Prep some fresh food to have on hand for snacking, make a vibrant salad, and spiralize some veggies for a lighter pesto pasta! Establish a Natural Skincare Routine You all know how I feel about the importance of skincare. Without adequate skincare, no wellness routine could be considered complete. There are a ton of products on the market that contain artificial components and other unnecessary substances that should not be applied to the skin. Get rid of these products and switch to a more natural approach, this is one of my most recommended wellness suggestions for spring. You should stay away from alcohol and skincare products that identify water as the primary ingredient. Your skin may feel tight,

dry, and itchy after using them, as they tend to dry it out. For your skin, natural skincare products are like a nutritious smoothie. Seek full, plant-based components such as plant extracts, tea, and aloe. These are gentle and nutritious, assisting you in enhancing the appearance of your skin while you strive to improve your general health. I highly recommend checking out my natural skincare brand, “INNATA – Inspired by Omayra La Bella.” Discover the Ideal Workout Program One of the finest things to remember when it comes to wellness is to identify your favorite method of staying active. Our bodies gain so much from exercise, and spring is the ideal season to begin a new fitness regimen. Finding something you enjoy doing is the key here. You will be more likely to persevere and soon begin reaching your fitness objectives if you do this! Exercise also has a positive impact on your mood. If, like many of us, you have been depressed by the winter blues, you can quickly lift your spirits by including some exercise in your day. Try lifting weights, running, swimming, or yoga. You will have some healthy habits going into spring that will keep you feeling and looking your best if you have found something you enjoy. As spring approaches, get ready! Although winter often seems never-ending, it simply makes the arrival of spring even more delightful. It is still possible to start a healthy transition into the new season, even if your health has fallen off track. Now that I have shared some springtime wellness tips, get ready for it!

CELEBRITY SOUP

OSCAR-WINNING FILMS That FLOPPED at the Box Office

By Riesa Pascal

HERE ARE SIX EXAMPLES OF CLASSIC FILMS THAT INITIALLY BOMBED AT THE BOX OFFICE IN SPITE OF ACHIEVING AN OSCARS WIN!

44 | STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

On March 10th, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, will be awarded to numerous films for their artistic and technical merit. Often, these nominations are not surprising, but there have also been plenty of instances where the Academy recognized a film’s brilliance before the public in spite of it being a box office flop. Here are six examples of classic films that initially bombed at the box office in spite of achieving an Oscars win.

“It’s a Wonderful Life’ (1946) Despite a massive promotional campaign and hitting theaters in time for Christmas, the release of the holiday classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life” wasn’t anywhere near as “wonderful” as the studio had hoped. Due to going severely over budget and another competing war-themed holiday film released simultaneously, “It’s a Wonderful Life” barely earned back half of what it needed to be profitable. The studio company walked away with a Technical Achievement Oscar for their snow special effects, but went bankrupt over the failure and failed to renew the copyright license when it expired in 1974. When it entered public domain in 1974, the film’s royalty-free broadcasts earned it a deserved legacy as one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time.

‘Citizen Kane’ (1941) Although “Citizen Kane” became one of the most acclaimed movies of all time, it faced heavy controversy for its commentary on contemporary media tycoons and the real man who inspired it: William Randolph Hearst who owned 28 newspapers and magazines at the time. Upon learning of his unflattering portrayal, Hearst refused to print anything positive about the film and some theater chains even refused to screen “Citizen Kane” for fear of backlash. Even those brave theaters that wanted to show the film had difficulty filling their seats with the inability to advertise in many of the most popular publications. Despite Hearst’s successful attempts to hurt the film’s release, the box office flop was still recognized by the Academy in 1942 and decades later it went on to become a legendary staple of film history.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017) While the original “Blade Runner” was well-reviewed, “Blade Runner 2049” ended up with even more Oscar nominations and two wins. Unfortunately, the long-awaited sequel had very costly production and a low audience turnout so even the Oscar wins weren’t enough to take away from the fact that the film was a massive bomb. One explanation for the film’s poor box office performance could be the marketing team’s decision to provide cryptic teasers with little information regarding the movie’s plot which left potential theatergoers unsure if the movie was worth seeing.

‘The Wolfman’ (2010) Next up is one of Universal Studios’ biggest financial failures of all time. Period horror film “The Wolfman” was a remake of a 1941 film and featured a star-studded cast including Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Simon Merrells. Unfortunately, lastminute creative changes, a writers’ strike and multiple setbacks on its release date led the $150 million budgeted film to be a complete bomb at the box office. Even with millions lost, The Wolfman still took home a surprise Oscar win for its only nomination in makeup which saved Universal Studios from complete embarrassment.

‘Hugo’ (2011) Despite having Martin Scorsese’s name at the helm, the famed filmmaker’s release of “Hugo” was a huge disappointment when it came to box office sales having been surpassed by other family films released around the same time. Although the studio set a hefty initial budget of $100 million, they quickly exceeded it by $80 million through numerous costly decisions such as adapting the film for 3D viewing. Left with only modest profits before the theater’s cut of the gross, even the total earnings weren’t enough money for Paramount to make back their budget. Incredibly, the film was still a total Academy awards juggernaut, earning a whopping eleven Oscar nominations and five wins. ‘Almost Famous’ (2000) A semi-autobiographical representation of director Cameron Crowe’s early life as a teenage reporter for Rolling Stone, “Almost Famous” drew unanimous praise for its heartfelt story after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film went on to win Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and Roger Ebert even nominated it for the best film of the year. Unfortunately, this film’s title pretty much sums up its poor performances in theaters and the $60 million it cost to make was reportedly already $15 million over budget. Needless to say, “Almost Famous” was a complete financial trainwreck although today it has rightfully become a cult classic and is considered one of the best films of the 2000s. STYLET0ME.COM | 45

Your Personalized Guide to Astrology

YEAR OF THE

DRAGON

The dragon has long held a power position in the Chinese zodiac, showering success upon those born in its years. With 2024 being a year of the dragon, legends explain that the mythical creature’s good fortune will be sprinkled upon all. This Eastern horoscope is characterized by assigning an animal to each year in a repeated cycle of 12 years. Find out what this year has in store for your Chinese Horoscope By Laura Choi

LIVING ‘N HARMONY

Dragon: 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024

It’s the dragons’ year and many believe being born in a year of the dragon is the best possible outcome for a person. Fame and fortune are coming the way of dragons in 2024, especially when surrounded by the lucky colors of silver and gold. While dragons may experience a few roadblocks on the way to their desires, overall this is a good year for marriages, babies and new businesses. Snake: 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013

The intelligence and adaptability of snakes will come in handy this year. Be flexible this year as there will be several changes. But by being attentive to changes in the workplace and to colleagues, snakes can find a way to discover new successes in the changing world. Snakes are advised to be flexible when communicating with loved ones, too. It’s not the time to be stubborn. Horse: 1906, 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014

This looks to be a good year for those born in years of the horse. Known for their energetic disposition, horses can kick it into high gear in 2024 as a number of career advancements or changes may be coming their way. Away from work, horses should nurture their calmer side, which will lead to happiness at home, too. The occasional health issue may come up, but overall it’s believed to be a year of positivity and prosperity for horses. Goat: 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015

The sheep (or goat) can look forward to periods of calm in between highs and lows. When things seem low, sheep are advised to watch their finances. But, when the tide turns, a number of revenueincreasing opportunities are coming the sheep’s way. After experiencing these ups and downs, sheep will enjoy some quiet time with family in 2024. Stick to 2 and 7 when looking for lucky numbers and buy carnations to attract additional good fortune. Monkey: 1908, 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

The monkey gets along well with the dragon, which sends favorable signals to those born in years of the monkey. Monkeys may occasionally need to show their bosses that they are valuable assets to ensure they’re appreciated, but once they do that the year will be a good one at work. Relationships will likely remain stable; no big highs or lows. However, that leaves time for monkeys to work on themselves and perhaps pick up a new skill. The numbers said to bring monkeys good fortune this year are 4 and 9.

Rat: 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

Rooster: 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

Ox: 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

Roosters are courageous and conscientious, but sometimes stray a little onto the wild side. That’s why roosters need to be a bit careful at times and ensure they aren’t stepping on the toes of others at work or at home. Roosters need to give those around them the opportunity to succeed to achieve increased bliss in all arenas of life. It’s not the time to take big financial risks, but with careful investment all will be well. Red is a color believed to bring good fortune to roosters this year.

2024 will be slow and steady for the Ox. But, the good news is there’s progress. All of the hard work from 2023 will lead to financial benefits this year — a year in which it’s also key to balance work life and home life. On the home front, there will be peace and calm, as long as those balances are kept in check. By the way, the lucky numbers for oxen this year are 1 and 4.

Dog: 1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018

Dogs could find 2024 to be full of ups and downs. Patience and loyalty are attributes that will help dogs find success during the year, which could lead to increased wealth. That financial success may arrive more easily than relationship success. Keep both ears open when talking to loved ones and when lucky numbers are needed, rely on 3, 4 and 9. The dog is famously known for being honest and this is important for reflecting that characteristic. Pig: 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

There is actually much to celebrate for those born in a year of the pig. The pig is one of the luckiest signs in Chinese astrology. The numbers 2, 5 and 8 can particularly bring good fortune. And those born in a year of the pig are known for being benevolent and compassionate. The year ahead means you should treat others as you want to be treated and good fortune will be coming your way.

Good news for all those rats out there. They get along well with the dragon and that means some of that mythical good luck dust will be blown their way. Black will be the lucky color of the year for rats. Luck may especially arrive in the workplace, but to keep the positive vibes flowing in rats’ love life they need to make sure they’re also keeping the communication flowing. Prioritize listening some more to partners or potential mates.

Tiger: 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

This could be a competitive year for tigers in the workplace, who will have to work to negotiate some speed bumps on the job. Finances, however, will be secure, as tigers analyze savings and portfolios. Take the time to also analyze friendships and relationships, too, to make sure they’re a positive force rather than a negative one. Rabbit: 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023

This year may not be the best year for networking, promotions or communication in personal relationships. However, the year provides an ideal opportunity to find calm and focus on inner peace. Rabbits are known for being quick, adaptable and smart. Use those attributes to negotiate curves in the road and new paths that appear. * Note: The years related to each zodiac animal sign generally run for 12 months, starting in late January or early February. If you have a birthday in late January or early February, you may want to do further research to find out exactly which sign is yours.

REGENERATIVE SPORT SPINE AND SPA Regenerative Medicine • Cartilage damage with long term, repeated injections • Avascular necrosis (death of the soft tissue due to restricted blood flow) • Increases the likelihood of needing a joint replacement by 9% per steroid injection

Manuel Colon MD, Rafael Santiago MD, and Dana Kleinman DO, co-owners at Regenerative Sport, Spine & Spa, specialize in the use of regenerative medicine to correct common orthopedic issues that are typically treated with pain medicines, steroids and surgeries. Regenerative therapies such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) bone marrow aspirate (BMA) containing stem cells, and adipose are a promising treatment for common injuries such as tendonitis, rotator cuff tears of the shoulder, meniscus tears in the knee, and disk derangements of the neck and back. For those who wish to avoid unnecessary surgery and

the side effects of prescribed pain medicines, regenerative medicine may be the answer. Most injuries involving the musculoskeletal system are treated sequentially with steroids, physical therapy and eventually surgery when all else fails. Most people are not aware of the damage that these chemical medications are doing to their bodies. Steroids, while effective at eliminating pain in the short term, have been shown to also cause the following: • Tendon weakening or rupture • Thinning of skin and soft tissue around the injection site

PRP and stem cells from BMA are natural treatments that come from our own bodies, so there is no chance of rejection or no harmful side effects. Both PRP and BMA are a regenerative soup of healing factors that promote and initiate the rebuilding process within our bodies. While the immediate gratification of pain relief may not exist, the long term benefits of this treatment speak for themselves as there is no risk of infection, addiction, prolonged downtime or repeat surgery. There are multiple studies that can be found online about the benefits and outcomes of using this treatment method compared to the common treatments as outlined above. Patients who have taken advantage of these services at Regenerative Sport, Spine, & Spa have reported a 60%-90% improvement in function and reduction in pain following treatment. “We are developing a powerfully engaged team who’s drive is to make a difference n healthcare through educating and treating our clients with exceptional care and science based expertise.”

criminal trials, had cases dismissed, negotiated favorable sentences, and successfully opposed efforts by the government to seize assets through forfeiture procedures. His clients have included rap artists, lawyers, doctors, athletes, nurses, politicians, police officers, coaches, churches, preachers, pharmacists, correctional officers, federal agents, bankers, and corporations. He has defended matters before the NCAA, the Florida Department of Financial Services, the Florida Department of Health, and the Florida House of Representatives. Most notably he represented Adam Johnson (January 6th defendant known as “the podium guy”), the rap artist “Spinabenz,” and the rap artist “Glokk9ine.” He has helped his clients recover millions in cash and real property seized from clients by the government through civil asset forfeiture. The majority of these cases involved cash seizures by law enforcement at airports or during traffic stops. He is currently defending criminal cases in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan, and D.C.

Since 2017, attorney Dan Eckhart has defended clients accused of various crimes in federal and state courts throughout the nation. Dan Eckhart is a former federal agent and federal prosecutor with extensive white-collar, forfeiture, drug, firearms, money-laundering and trial experience. After graduating from Michigan State University Dan was hired as a Special Agent with the United States Customs Service and investigated money laundering, narcotics smuggling, and fraud cases. Upon graduating from Memphis University Law School, he was hired through the United States Department of Justice’s Honors Program as an Assistant Regional Counsel for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He worked on matters involving highprofile inmates including Christopher Boyce (Falcon and the Snowman), Omar AbdelRahman (First World Trade Center Bombing), Leonard Peltier (Murder of a FBI agent at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation), Ted Kaczynski (Unabomber), Jonathan Pollard (Israeli spy), Tim McVeigh (Oklahoma City Bombing), and John Gotti (Gambino Crime Family). Dan

also investigated staff misconduct and various security threat groups including the Aryan Brotherhood and the Mexican Mafia. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Dan was hired as an Assistant United States Attorney (federal prosecutor) in the Middle District of Florida. Dan worked in the civil, asset forfeiture and criminal divisions during his ten years with the office. Dan’s forfeiture knowledge helped him successfully prosecute international money-laundering cases. He traveled to Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Ireland, and the Netherlands to work with foreign prosecutors and agents on these cases. He tried complex white collar matters including bank fraud, mortgage fraud, money laundering, tax fraud, FOREX trading, healthcare fraud, bankruptcy fraud and Ponzi/ investment schemes. He also prosecuted a number of drug, firearm, and child pornography cases. Since opening his criminal defense firm “Dan Eckhart Law” Dan has won federal and state

Dan has been a speaker for the Association of Certified Money Laundering Specialist (ACAMS), Offshore Alert, the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators (IAFCI), the Florida Bankers Association, the Federal Bar Association, and gave moneylaundering training to IRS agents at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He is “of counsel” with Abood Law, established in Lansing, Michigan in 1956. Dan was one of four attorneys appointed to the Merit Selection Panel for the Middle District of Florida tasked with recommending two new federal magistrate judges in 2018 and 2019. He is an at-large director for the Orlando Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and was again selected as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers Association in 2024.

EYE DOCTORS OF THE YEAR

LY T. NGUYEN, MD Board Certified Ophthalmologist, Eye Florida Dr. Ly Nguyen’s first introduction into the world of ophthalmology came when she received some bad news: her father needed cataract surgery. At that time Dr. Nguyen was still a medical student with an undecided specialty at the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine. It was this chance encounter with her father’s cataract surgeon, the late Dr. Jorge Camara, that would eventually pave Dr. Nguyen’s path in ophthalmology. With Dr. Camara as her mentor, she developed an aptitude for medical research and publication. Together with other international ophthalmology residents, Dr. Nguyen published peer-reviewed articles in prominent ophthalmology journals about a new finding in Asian patients called involutional lateral entropion, and the use of a computer-assisted image-guided system (InstaTrak) in orbital surgery. She also published research findings on public health issues among Vietnamese immigrants in Hawai’i during her medical school training. Dr. Nguyen went on to complete her ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and was awarded the Resident Research Award in Ophthalmology. After residency, Dr. Nguyen moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, and worked as an associate at Mittleman Eye Center. Needing work-life balance, Dr. Nguyen combined the spirit of delivering better patient care and entrepreneurship by opening her private practice, St. Cloud Eye Center, in an underserved community of Central Florida. With the growth of St. Cloud Eye Center, the practice was later renamed Eye Florida. As a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist, Dr. Nguyen specializes in customized cataract surgery with premium intraocular lenses,

oculoplastics and minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery. At Eye Florida, her private practice, she also offers several other services, including routine eye exams, screening for corneal and retinal diseases, intravenous hydration (IV hydration therapy), Botox and Fillers, and stateof-the-art ophthalmic diagnostic testing — always with a focus on exceptional patient care in an inviting environment. Dr. Ly Nguyen is an internationally recognized doctor, author, and speaker with publications in peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Nguyen has received numerous awards, including Top Doctors and Best of Florida as well as being voted as Orlando Style’s Elite Doctors, Top Eye Doctors, and Women of the Year. During her free time, Dr. Nguyen likes to spend time with her family. She also fills her time with reading, traveling, and gardening. One of her dreams is to write a memoir about the time her parents and siblings escaped Vietnam by boat in the early 1980s and her family’s journey through Hong Kong’s refugee camp. “These memories are stories of where we came from. These are important lessons of hope, determination, and overcoming adversity that I hope I can pass on,” says Dr. Nguyen. Dr. Nguyen says her focus on becoming a better physician and her unwavering determination are lessons from her parents. Reflecting on her day-to-day interactions with her patients: “I love it when, after having cataract surgery, my patients say to me, ‘Doctor! I am so happy that I can see the world again!’ I want my patients to have the same positive experience with me as my father did that day with Dr. Camara.

NERVOUS TENSION

HEALTH

KEY TO ENHANCING MENTAL & PHYSICAL WELL-BEING By Natalie Smith

M

anaging stress is crucial for maintaining both mental and physical well-being. The impact of stress on our lives is profound, affecting various aspects such as health, relationships, and overall quality of life. Firstly, chronic stress can take a toll on our physical health. It has been linked to numerous health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and weakened immune systems. When the body is under constant stress, it releases hormones like cortisol, which, over time, can contribute to the development of these serious health conditions. By controlling stress, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of these ailments and promote a healthier, more resilient body. Furthermore, stress management is essential for mental health. Prolonged stress can lead to anxiety and depression, affecting one’s ability to think clearly, make decisions, and cope with daily challenges. Taking proactive steps to control stress, such as through mindfulness practices or relaxation techniques, can help protect mental well-being and foster a more positive mindset. In the realm of relationships, unchecked stress can strain connections with family, friends, and colleagues. It often manifests in irritability, mood swings, and reduced patience, making it difficult to engage effectively with others. By learning to control stress, individuals can improve their interpersonal skills, fostering healthier

relationships and a more supportive social network. Another critical aspect is performance. Whether at work or in personal pursuits, excessive stress can hinder productivity and creativity. It impairs focus and concentration, making tasks seem more challenging than they are. Through stress management techniques, individuals can enhance their ability to stay focused, make better decisions, and perform at their optimal level. Quality of life is undeniably linked to stress levels. When stress is left unaddressed, it can contribute to an overall sense of dissatisfaction and unhappiness. Learning to control stress allows individuals to enjoy life more fully, savoring the positive moments and navigating challenges with greater resilience. In conclusion, the importance of stress control cannot be overstated. It is a fundamental aspect of maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life. By addressing stress through various techniques like exercise, meditation, or seeking professional support, individuals empower themselves to lead happier, healthier lives. The benefits extend beyond the individual to impact relationships, work, and overall life satisfaction. Prioritizing stress management is an investment in both physical and mental well-being, ultimately contributing to a more vibrant and resilient life.
