STYLE EVENTS, NEWS & GOSSIP FROM AROUND ORLANDO

By Riesa Pascal Turkeys have come out of hiding, mistle toes are hanging and jingle bells are ringing once again! It’s Christmastime in the City Beautiful and though we won’t see any snow here in sunny Florida, one thing we can look forward to is a month filled with spectacular holiday themed events. Before we dive into a winter wonderland though, let’s take a look back at the fun we had in the month of November. Here are all the highlights, just in case you missed it! From November 5th-11th, Orlando International Fashion Week spanned across Central Florida and brought exposure to various designers including those from out of state and throughout the world. The bi-annual event also highlighted performers, talent, venues, and attractions of the city through a combination of high-fashion events, designer competitions, showcases and private parties. On November 11th, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council hosted the 18th annual City of Orlando Veterans Day Parade which took place between Orange Ave. and Robinson St. Patriotic attendees of all ages donned their best red, white, and blue attire and gathered downtown to honor the men and women of the armed forces who have fought for our nation’s freedoms. Orlando Weekly got the city excited about beer with the return of the 3rd Annual Orlando Beer Festival! On November 11th, over 3,500 beer-loving attendees gathered in Festival Park to sample craft and premium beers from local breweries and around the world. The event also included wine tasting, interactive games, tasty eats and live music to keep the party going all afternoon. Portions of the proceeds went to benefit the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. The Festival of Trees, now in its thirty-first year, transformed the Orlando Museum of Art into a

glittering wonderland filled with sparkling trees, stunning vignettes and more for visitors of all ages. From November 11th-19th, attendees delighted in designer Christmas trees and fun holiday decor scattered throughout the museum. The festival featured several different events throughout the week that were perfect for guests celebrating the beginning of the holiday season. On November 11th, 4 Rivers Smokehouse’s John Rivers and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits’ David LaRue welcomed guests to the 7th Annual Cows ‘N Cabs event at Central Park West Meadow in Winter Park. Guests showed up wearing their best cowboy attire and spent the evening trying delicious culinary offerings paired with wines, craft beers and spirits from over 30 local restaurants. 100% of proceeds from the evening went to AfterSchool All-Stars Orlando and Elevate Orlando. Pioneer Day is an annual outdoor festival in celebration of Osceola County’s rich heritage. On November 11th, the 26th Annual Pioneer Day returned to Pioneer Village with plenty of family friendly activities including live music, kids craft zone, real Florida market, historic reenactments, and lessons in pioneer chores like cow-milking and butter-making. Guests of the free festival learned how Florida Seminoles and early pioneer families lived off the land long before electricity and airconditioning. On November 18th, VIP guests were cordially invited to attend a premier art exhibit and reception at Waldorf Astoria Orlando curated by UpArt. Art in Central Park celebrated the dynamic art and culture of Orlando with an evening of inspired engagement and the exclusive opportunity to purchase the one-of-a-kind collection of Dr. Antonia Novello, the first woman to serve as the Surgeon General of the United States.

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY Unwind at Green Turtle Cay, Abaco Islands By Sven J. Bode

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

There’s something in the waters of Green Turtle Cay in the Abaco Islands. Nestled in the stunning Bahamas, the 120-mile-long winding chain of islands is home to one of the friendliest atmospheres in the Caribbean that radiates from the sunshine glittering upon the glassy sea to the bright smiles of those who call the Abacos home.

If you’re longing for a fresh perspective this holiday season, Air Unlimited invites you to explore these islands of intrigue, which have hidden away some of the most charming qualities of Bahamian life like a well-kept secret. With the islands a mere 300 miles from Orlando and 345 miles from Tampa, Air Unlimited flights to the Abacos are as friendly as the island people, offering Floridians trips around one hour in length. What could possibly take the relaxation factor of your Abaco getaway to the next level? Private luxury air service. Located at OrlandoSanford International Airport, Air Unlimited makes traveling to your new favorite islands an effortless experience. Scheduled flights and charters at affordable pricing take the stress

out of planning your de-stressing trip. The island vibes begin even before takeoff with easy booking through their online service, and a much-needed break from long lines and baggage fees, as well as free parking on direct flights. Air Unlimited Partners Charles “Chick” Gregg and Mark Neubauer founded their charter business on their love for aviation and the belief that luxurious travel should be well within reach. Raised by fathers with careers in flight, both of the pilots have carried on their family tradition to benefit those seeking an island getaway, conveniently transporting Floridians to Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay International Airports in the Abaco Islands.

Once you arrive in the sunny Abacos, you will quickly want to climb aboard one of the dozens of boats within view. Since the colonial era, these islands have been the boating capital of the world, and the variety of cays in the Abacos chain make this destination the perfect place for island hopping. Wherever you venture to on the islands, you’ll discover the warmth and welcome of the Abaco people who are eager to show you what makes these islands the best in the Bahamas. Three miles east of Great Abaco lies Green Turtle Cay, a paradisiacal island teeming with troves of the green turtles that give the land its name. The beautiful stretch of sand and shore lines the world’s third largest barrier reef, sporting excellent undersea treasures for snorkelers and scuba divers. ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM |

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

A stroll around Green Turtle Cay will have you imagining yourself in a colonial New England fishing port, complete with cottages and white picket fences. Founded in the 1700s by Loyalists, the village of New Plymouth still retains the English aesthetic of its historic past. Green Turtle Cay is home to one of the top destinations in the Abacos, the Bluff House Beach Resort and Marina, tucked away at the highest point of the Cay. With views of the ocean that will lull you into a daydream, Bluff House seems to have been fashioned for those in love with the sea. The resort’s full service marina offers boaters the vacation of a lifetime, and as the only marina on Green Turtle Cay with specific “Catamaran Slips,” it is the choice marina for guests wanting to set sail with ease. Every luxury suite is waterfront and features a breathtaking view of the Sea of Abaco. A stay in one of the Bluff House’s private cottages gives larger groups of visitors even more seclusion and tranquility. The old-world British West Indies-inspired design of the resort and its suites encourage travelers to explore all that awaits. The 12-acre property is perfect for those desiring a quiet holiday escape, with a private white-sand beach for guests to relax in the sunshine and sea breezes uninterrupted. The beach is just a few footsteps away from the Tranquil Turtle Beach Bar, where you can enjoy the tastes of the Abacos with traditional Bahamian food and tropical drinks, surrounded by the musical sounds of the island. As the only private beach on Green Turtle Cay, the coveted location makes resort guests feel as royal as those of the British Crown.

The feelings of royalty are not limited to the Bluff House Resort; perhaps the most appealing quality of the Abacos is its innate sensibility— that of both the island and the people living upon it—to really make visitors feel as though they have found paradise. From the wonderful resort staff to conversations with friendly locals, you’ll find an endless spirit of cheerfulness to ease your mind during your stay.

and diving escapades in the crystalline waters of the Abacos. Explore coral reef catacombs, come face-to-face with the island’s famous green turtles, and swim alongside a vibrant tapestry of fish. Brendal’s Adventure Specialty Packages let you lose yourself in a coral-filled sea of mystique as you island hop, feed stingrays, sharks, and indulge in a fresh seafood picnic lunch on the beach.

The impeccable service all over Green Turtle Cay is one of the many reasons to try the best dining options this island has to offer. The Club Restaurant at Green Turtle Club Resort & Marina is the creation of Executive Chef Michael Howell, and is a quintessential resort-casual dining experience. With a wide range of regional Abaco favorites and gourmet dishes, The Club Restaurant sets a delicious scene complete with the elegance of outdoor waterfront dinners. Dine by candlelight on the patio as you marvel at the view of White Sound Harbor glistening in the moonlight.

A quick boat trip will take you to Manjack Cay, a privately owned island that has yet to be developed. Here you can truly catch a glimpse of the untouched Bahamas in their natural state, while sifting through sand for buried seashell treasures and feeding even more gentle stingrays who love to meet new two-legged friends.

For boat lovers, Lizard’s Bar & Grill at Leeward Yacht Club & Marina encompasses the leisurely atmosphere of a life at sea. Framed within a vibrant, 7-acre tropical landscape, the Leeward Yacht Club is home to this Caribbean-themed restaurant sure to satisfy your hunger for true Bahamian cuisine. If you’re island retreat calls for a bit of adventure, visit Brendal’s Dive Center for your opportunity to surround yourself with the effervescent wildlife and under-the-sea beauties that lie beyond the shore. Since 1985, Brendal’s Dive Center has offered visitors exciting snorkeling

Just south of Green Turtle Cay the fun continues at Noname Cay, a relatively uninhabited island except for a cluster of affectionate, swimming pigs! Peppered with beautiful Casuarina trees, this is a one-of-a-kind hideaway for boaters seeking time to survey the natural beauty of the island. Climb ashore and enjoy a beach picnic, or swim in the shallow waters with these happy pigs who are hungry for company. Dining at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse

By Dana Damato

DINING ‘N STYLE

“My first experience dining at Del Frisco’s wasn’t just an experience – it was a full on food journey.”

It’s no secret that Orlando, FL is a mecca for all things meant to cater to its visitors. That includes world-class entertainment, shopping, museums and of course, dining. It can be a tough gamble to try and win the hearts and palates in a city with so much to offer. If you’re going to be in the game, you really have to ‘wow’ your foodies, wine enthusiasts and everyone else who frequents high-end steakhouses. I’ve had my fair share of meals in many steakhouses around the world. If there’s one thing any steakhouse absolutely has to get right, it’s the steak. My first experience dining at Del Frisco’s wasn’t just an experience – it was a full on food journey. I can assure you that even though it was only my first time dining at Del Frisco’s Double Each Steakhouse, it will definitely not be my last. Taking that first step into the two-story restaurant immediately sets the vibe of what this restaurant is all about – class and style. The front of the restaurant begins with a dimly lit bar that stretches half way to the back of the restaurant. You won’t want to leave this modern but cozy area, complete with a cigar humidor and a fireplace to set the mood. If you’re looking for a tasty cocktail to start the evening, the Sapphire Bramble is a unique concoction of Bombay Sapphire, Domaine de Canton, lemon, blackberry, basil and topped with San Pellegrino Limonata. If you’d rather wind down with a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc, be sure to order a bottle of New Zealand’s finest, Loveblock. The main event of the night is none other then the mouth-watering menu items that are unlike anything you’ve ever tried before. If you were to ask Executive Chef, Greg Thompson, what he recommends, he would tell you the same thing I will - the Dry-Aged Steaks. Even though any of the food on the menu will be satisfying, there’s no other

menu item quite as tender, tasty, melt-in-your-mouth delicious like a 45 day Dry Aged Prime Rib Eye. Sprinkle a little black Hawaiian salt and I guarantee you’ll never want to eat another steak again. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse on Orlando’s famous strip International Drive, is a must-visit if you are a visitor to the City Beautiful or if you call Orlando home. Don’t miss an opportunity to grab a handcrafted cocktail from one of their two state-of-theart bars, four private dining rooms, a picturesque patio and a sleek, modern interior, making it the perfect place to relax and celebrate simultaneously. If you’re a wine drinker, you’ll be in awe of their diverse wine list of more than 1200 labels to choose from to pair with your meal. No steak dinner is complete with the perfect dessert, and the Butter Cake…takes the cake! Gelato hues: Colors like peach, magenta, and butterscotch are making their return. Open up your wardrobe door and take a softer approach to color for spring. Vibrant and saturated hues are out. WHAT YOUR BROW GAME says about you!

In a culture where we are taught to embrace masculinity, men who pluck their brows aren’t necessarily the most appealing. Society has created a fine line. A man cannot perform “feminine” functions without being judged or misinterpreted. But why should men be judged for keeping up with their personal maintenance?

Quality Shave Fulton & Roark’s shaving cream is your go-to product when it’s time to get messy. Crafted to leave your skin gently caressed and moisturized, the cream is set to create a quality shave. It contains a nourishing blend of avocado, tea tree, jojoba and citrus oils. $16 / Available at Fultonandroark.com

Personal grooming is important. Aside from appearing clean and presentable for work, hygiene is important to care for every day. The neatness of our appearance says a lot about our character. Even though eyebrow grooming for women means tweezing, shaping, and creating high, dramatic arches, it does not mean men have to endure the same pain. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of trimming or plucking a couple of hairs. Overall, eyebrow maintenance is just as important for men as it is for women. Here we’ve gathered a couple of tips and tricks to make sure your brow game is strong. 1. Tweeze in a Breeze Purchase a good pair of tweezers and make the job a lot less easier. If you’re not into waxing, just stick to what you’re most comfortable with. Tweezers are excellent at grasping those fine hairs without letting them slide off.

2. Wax and Relax You don’t always have to tweeze your hairs. Eyebrow waxing is another option that exists for men. It’s faster than tweezing and it provides the hairs with a little definition. It also gets the strands that tweezing often misses. When booking an appointment, make sure to find someone experienced in eyebrow waxing for men. 3. Don’t Be Afraid of Thick Eyebrows Thick eyebrows do not mean bushy and untamed. If you naturally have thick brows, keep them groomed. Large brows balance greatly with other facial features such as large eyes and lips. 4. Trim, Trim, and Trim Plucking is just as fine as tweezing but don’t leave the job halfway done. Although trimmers don’t shape the outline of your eyebrow, they’re lifesavers at controlling the depth of those hairs. Use this as part of your eyebrow maintenance, especially if you have bushy or straggly hairs.

Street YACHT 2018 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT CONVERTIBLE GALENE EDITION BY MULLINER

Bentley Motors recently announced the new Bentley Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition by Mulliner, inspired by luxury yachts. Bentley’s bespoke commissioning division, Mulliner, has created the ultimate edition of the Continental GT Convertible in collaboration with British yacht experts, Princess Yachts, and takes inspiration from yacht design. Defined by brilliant Glacier White and Sequin Blue hues externally, and inspired by the clean, confident design lines and materials of yachts internally, the Galene Edition by Mulliner combines the best elements of an oceanic lifestyle with luxury convertible motoring. It is powered by Bentley’s refined 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 powerplant, with 507 PS and 660 Nm and benefits from Bentley’s elegant, four-layered retractable hood which keeps occupants in the same unruffled environment that the hardtop Continental GT coupe provides.

The seats are in Linen and Portland hides with Camel hand cross stitching, the door panels are Linen, Portland and Brunel. Linen, Brunel and Camel accentuate the dashboard, centre console and armrests, whilst the steering wheel is Linen and Brunel with a Camel 12 o’clock stripe. The detailed headrest embroidery is in Camel and the Glacier White stowage case is exquisitely lined in Brunel Alcantara. The Glacier White external paintwork is echoed inside, in the stowage case and fascia panels, which can be specified with a unique handpainted Jaume Vilardell illustration of a super yacht alongside the Mulliner script in each car. It also coats the clock bezel in the Galene Edition, creating an interior space full of light and luxury. Pinstripe Walnut: Commissioned for the Galene Edition

Designed by the Ocean: Clean, Confident Lines

Inspired by the timeless appeal of sophisticated yacht design, Mulliner has created a new material finish – Pinstripe Walnut – for the Galene Edition.

The external design of the new Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition by Mulliner captures the iridescent sparkle of crystal clear waters.

This distinctive surface is used in open-pore form, for a more authentic, natural finish, in the centre stack and console.

Painted in pristine Glacier White, with a matching bodywork kit, the Galene Edition is specified with lower brightware in Sequin Blue, a timeless detail and elegant reminder of the life aquatic. A dark blue hood and striking 21” polished Propeller Wheels complete Mulliner’s external signature on the Galene Edition. Inspired by Luxury Yachts, Created by Mulliner The interior of the Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition pays homage to the classic opulence, finest hand-crafted

materials and exquisite details that are championed both by yachts and Bentley cars.

A Pinstripe Walnut insert also adds a note of understated elegance to the bespoke illuminated treadplates in the Galene Edition, and lines the boot floor, creating a striking harmony with the rest of this graceful series, limited to just 30 examples worldwide, by Mulliner.

Bye, wrinkles! ORIGINS ANTI-AGING POWER SERUM This antiaging serum improves visible signs of aging in as little as two weeks. $59 / Available at Sephora.com

KEEP YOUR SKIN YOUNG

Easy tips for keeping your skin firm, bright, and blemish free I think it’s safe to say that every woman (and man) has faced many skin battles. Some which we’ve won and some which we’ve lost. But there is a way to win every battle. Of course it will take a few extra steps in your routine, but they are super simple and easy and won’t take away from your time! Also this can be done to all skin types. And if you already have a method that works for you then keep doing it!

Watch your TONE! PIXI BEAUTY GLOW TONIC The Pixi Glow Tonic is a highly concentrated, invigorating facial toner that deeply cleans pores by sweeping away excess oil and impurities. $29 / Available at Target.com

52

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Before we get into the details, all products that you decide to purchase for this, try to find the ones that uses more natural products. So a lot of plant extract, natural oils and butters, and collagen protein. This is especially good if you’re interested in achieving younger looking skin. Collagen helps build healthy skin cells and is partially responsible for skin’s youthful elasticity, softness and firmness. Now that we’ve cleared the air lets get into the steps and products! First thing is to exfoliate. This may be a broken record to some but it is probably one of the most important step in your skincare routine for the face (and body!) It helps with the removal of dry/dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Exfoliation not only helps many skin problems, it also increases blood circulation, which in turn helps achieve healthy and glowing skin. BE CAREFUL not to over-exfoliate. If you over do it, it can cause skin irritation and inflammation, which can actually accelerate aging. You should

try to exfoliate two to three times a week for normal to combination skin, and once a week for sensitive skin. Next is toning your skin. It’s important to buy a toner and use it after you wash your face/exfoliate. Toners help remove oil and traces of dirt. (Toners are most helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin) Toners also shrink your pores, just apply a small amount on a cotton pad and gently blot or wipe your face. Another benefit is that it helps restore your skin’s pH balance. The skin is acidic naturally and when you clean your face, it can mess up the natural balance and your skin will work to try to get it back which can lead to oily skin, but using a toner will help restore the balance. Final steps are to get an anit-aging serum / collagen serums and moisturizer. These serums help with soothing and brightening of the skin and the long term use of these serums result in healthier and firmer skin, even skin tone, and fewer wrinkles. Choose serums that contain ingredients such as stable antioxidants, essential oils, retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Serums do not replace moisturizers, so make sure to moisturize your face daily. It’ll boost hydration in your skin, prevent flaking and dullness, and work as a protective layer of moisture that lasts all day.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

With a razzle-dazzle circus of Vegas showgirls, Candyland costumes, and LED lights every shade of the rainbow, Katy Perry never fails to transform her music into a thrill-ride of a concert experience, and now, a decade after arriving on the scene with “I Kissed a Girl,” Perry is leaving her colorful mark on international arena stages with her Witness Tour.

By Courtney Caggiano

As her latest album of the same name so poignantly implies, Perry is pushing past her expected limits with the confession of a woman who has seen it all. “Witness” is Perry’s opportunity to indulge her fascination in what lies beyond, after years of indulging the critics aiming to pigeonhole the singer in a pinup girl past. Perry’s “Witness” challenges the value found in the bright, bubblegum pleasantry of her previous thematic ventures as she opts for a more futuristic-noir aesthetic, revealing a woman jaded by the world’s bitterness and open to exploring the depths of its darkness.

54

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

In tracks and music video adaptations for songs like “Swish Swish,” we see Perry forgoing the comfort and consistency of pretty girl pop for high-stakes shock value, galavanting her complaints and overdue teen angst the way she once did her joys of romance and blissful youth. While fans of “Teenage Dream” and “One of the Boys” might not be so quick to roll their windows down and sing along to Perry’s new sound, Perry seems excited to garner herself new listeners who will embrace her changing spirit. The ever-adapting songstress is perhaps striving to prove that time is no match for her as she fights for relevance through the shifting winds of tastes and trends. You can catch this newly redefined Katy Perry as she takes her Witness Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center on December 17.

Much like expecting parents picking a baby name, musicians have to think long and hard when choosing a name that will follow and identify their band for the rest of their careers. As you’ll soon come to find out, sometimes inspiration strikes in the most unusual of places!

56

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

UB4O

Chumbawamba

The band members began as friends who knew each other from various schools across Birmingham. The name “UB40” officially stands for “Unemployment Benefit, Form 40,” which a paper form issued by the UK government’s Department of Employment. The band members thought of the name while standing in line at the unemployment office at the time of the band’s formation.

Although the official explanation is that it’s just a meaningless word, an early interview with Chumbawamba’s Danbert Nobacon provided a much more specific story behind their odd name. While needing to use the restroom in a dream, Nobacon didn’t know which door to use in a public toilet because the signs said “Chumba” and “Wamba” instead of “Men” and “Women.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd

The Backstreet Boys

The name is a mock tribute to Leonard Skinner, a gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL. The teacher was notorious for strictly enforcing the school’s policy against boys having long hair. Skinner bothered the boys so much that Gary Rossington ended up dropping out of high school because he was “tired of being hassled about his hair.” Leonard Skinner has since made nice with the wildly successful band and even allowed them to use a photo of his Leonard Skinner Realty sign for the inside of their third album.

The mega-successful boy band formed in Orlando, Florida in 1993. Their manager at the time, Lou Pearlman, wanted to create a group similar to the popular New Kids on the Block. He decided to call the group Backstreet Boys as an homage to Orlando’s Backstreet Market where the guys used to hang out.

Daft Punk In the early ‘90s, Daft Punk recorded songs under the name Darlin’ which was a nod to a Beach Boys single off their 1967 album “Wild Honey.” In the Melody Maker singles column in May 1993, writer Dave Jennings described Darlin’’s “Cindy So Loud” as a “daft punky thrash.” The negative review first depressed the pair, but then sparked inspiration for their new band name.

Fall Out Boy The beloved pop-punk band actually played without a name for their first two shows together. At the end of their second show, they asked the crowd to yell out their ideas for a band name. One audience member suggested “Fallout Boy” which was a reference to the sidekick of the Radioactive Man from The Simpsons. Needless to say, the name stuck and Fall Out Boy they became!

Coldplay The world renowned, record-breaking band was originally called Starfish while a friend’s group was called Coldplay. The original Coldplay had taken their unique, but memorable name from a book of collected poems. When the band no longer wanted the name, Starfish asked if they could use it instead.

QUEEN It may be hard to believe, but the band was originally called Smile! Freddie Mercury came up with the new name for the band, later saying, “It’s just a name, but it’s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid… It’s a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one face of it.”

BEST FRIENDS

Traveling with Your Pet? T I P S F O R M A K I N G I T A S M O O T H H O L I D AY G E TAWAY By Georyana Santos

Traveling for the holidays is a gift. Even though bringing our parents and siblings is enjoyable, taking along our four-legged family member can be a dream come true. Yes, puppies! Successful flight travels with pets requires patience, planning, and flexibility, but if you do it right, vacationing with your furry friend can be an amazing bonding opportunity. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you and your best buddy prepare for a smooth trip: Check, check, check: Airlines have strict regulations when it comes to the size of pet carriers. Each airline varies slightly but most require the carrier to be between 16 or 19 inches long and about 10 inches tall. They must be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you. If you have a slightly bigger dog, make sure to check kennel requirements if he’ll be going through as checked baggage. Also, confirm your dog feels comfortable in its crate. As humans, we love to feel cozy and pleasantly relaxed when we travel so why not provide that same experience to our pets? 58

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Double-check your dog has a little bit of wiggle room in the carrier. If you have a bigger pet, throw in a chew toy so he’s entertained. Make sure your animal is healthy. Some airlines will refuse to accept pets as checked baggage if their health is in question or will be jeopardized by certain flight conditions. Be prepared for the plane’s weather conditions. Some planes have floor air conditioners so your puppy might get cold. Be sure to dress them up with clothes or add extra blankets for warmth. Pack a bag for your puppy: Don’t forget puppies are small humans too. Separate their items from yours to make them easier to access. It’s important to pack all of the necessary such as food, water, bowls, and shampoos but don’t forget other items you may need to include: • Medications • Flea comb • Tick remover • Poop bags • Brush • Mosquito and Insect Repellent

With packing, also comes potty materials. It’s always better to travel over prepared than underprepared. Regardless of how potty-trained your pet is, accidents can happen. Line up your pup’s carrier with a DryFur pad. If he needs to pee, carry him into the restroom with a wee wee pad. Lessen the Barking: With dogs also comes attention-seeking. Dogs are experts at doing everything it takes to avoid being ignored. Flying with your pet can most definitely mean cries and puppy dog eyes. If your little buddy is an anxious airplane flyer and likes to bark, talk to the veterinarian. A helpful tip is to chat about possible anti-anxiety medications you could give to your pet before boarding. Before going to the airport, tire out your dog by taking him on a jog or playing fetch. Your pet will be less likely to feel antsy on the flight if he is worn out. He will also embrace nap time!

ROCK THE HOLIDAYS WITH VIOLECTRIC! By Georyana Santos Combine a mix of VioluminescenceTM lighted string instruments with individuals who play killer live musical hits, and you have yourself the string sensation, “Violectric.” Formed in 2008, the string quintet plus keyboard and drums has opened up for and toured with acts such as Adam Levine, Sting, and Sarah Brightman. The top string rock group combines electric pickups and effects with their custom arrangements of classic and modern rock tunes such as Who Are You?” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Chandelier,” and “Despacito.” Violectric will return to the Walt Disney Amphitheatre for a fun-filled live concert featuring traditional holiday songs mashed up with classic rock tunes and modern hits on December 9th in Downtown Orlando. The annual Violectric Holiday Show has teamed up this year with Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. Led by Vinylinist and Grammy Recording Artist Michelle Jones, the star shares what led her to form Violectric and what audiences can expect to see in this year’s Holiday Show. Orlando Style: Where did your passion for the violin spring from? Michelle Jones: My parents were both musicians. My mom was church organist and a symphony violinist. I cannot remember not playing the violin because my mom put a violin in my hand before I was even three years old. She also taught lessons so I always saw students at our house receiving lessons. She also gave me lessons and of course, I reached an age where she said, 60

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

“you need someone else to help you now.” I wound up doing a pre-college program where I was on a scholarship there from 9 years old through high school. I still take lessons because there’s always new things to learn. OS: Growing up, what were some of your musical inspirations? MJ: A lot of my influences were great composers. One of my favorites was Mahler and his symphony. For the rock side, it was 1977 when my dad had a Led Zeppelin album and he put it on. There were strings and that was it for me. It was “Cashmere” and I was so excited to hear that. From then on, I said, “this is what I want.” That song is very special to me because of that connection. OS: What makes Violectric different? MJ: First, there are no vocals or guitars. Everything is covered in instrument in a music part somewhere. Everything is done LIVE on traditional stringed instruments. Then we add the keys and drums. There are no backing tracks which really sets us apart from all of the other holiday shows. Plus, everything is memorized. When you think of a string quartet, you usually picture women in long black dresses with stands in front of them. They’re intensely focused on their music. We are able to interact with our audience because we are wireless.

OS: Every time you step on stage, what do you try to communicate with your music? Emotion. I want the audience to feel what I feel - whether if it’s a sad piece or a happy piece. It becomes a shared experience which is why people go to live concerts. If people wanted to simply watch a video, they can do that. Although, what we find is that people attach most music to a special event in their life – whether if it was their first dance song or a tune they listened to when their son was born. When you go to a live concert, you create invaluable experiences. OS: What are YOU most excited about in regards to the show? MJ: There’s so much excitement for the Holiday Show! For me, I love seeing Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus! We are always excited to perform our holiday mashups. What we do is we mash X-mas tunes up with what we consider popular, modern rock and pop tunes. For example, “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen happens to mash up beautifully with “O Christmas Tree.” Even though what you’re hearing is “Born to Run”, instead of singing, I play the melody of “O Christmas Tree”. I love the people’s looks on their faces because they’re trying to get what songs are being mashed up every single time. We really capture their attention on that.

IN THE KNOW

HELPING

HANDS A QUICK GUIDE TO CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

By Mark NeJame

Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley

Mark NeJame

The holidays are upon us, so if you haven’t already started, get your wallets ready – it’s gift-giving season! Now more than ever, gifts of a dual purpose are being given: a donation to a non-profit organization (NPO) on behalf of another is a creative and meaningful way to give to someone you care about. Adopt a snow leopard, give a goat to a family in need – so many options, so many passions. But how does one know which organization to select? There are a few rules of thumb when it comes to investigating non-profits: TAKE YOUR TIME IN PICKING THE ORGANIZATION. Selecting an NPO is something that should be done with care, over time. If you truly connect with the cause and the organization, then your first donation should be the beginning of a long-term relationship. You will look forward to receiving updates from the NPO on its status and accomplishments, and will hopefully continue to donate over the years and contribute to its growth. Donating simply for the cute stuffed animal or the desk calendar you receive is for the wrong reason. THE IRS IS YOUR FRIEND (WELL, FOR PURPOSES OF THIS ARTICLE). You can request 990s or tax-exempt applications from the IRS, as well as confirm a charity’s 501(c)(3) status. Obviously, if you can’t locate the organization on irs.gov or The Foundation Center’s 990 Finder (foundationcenter.org), don’t donate. FOCUS ON THE MORE ESTABLISHED NPO’S. Charity Navigator (also a non-profit organization) has been recognized as one of the more trusted resources available for NPO investigation, and provides several handy lists, such as “10 Most Followed,” “10 Most

62

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Celebrity-Related,” “10 Top Notch Charities” and “10 Charities in Deep Financial Trouble,” to name a few. Guidestar Premium is also a reputable resource for investigating non-profits. Resources such as these provide important information on NPO accountability and transparency, executive compensation and filing status – meaning, they’ve done the research for you. Check to make sure their information is up-to-date, and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call with questions. PAY ATTENTION WHEN BEING SOLICITED. Avoid making donations (like, really, just hang up the phone) over telecommunications phone calls. Scammers are much more successful over the phone. Listen and read closely: NPO’s will oftentimes select similar names for their organizations and may appear associated with other, completely unrelated non-profits. So stay alert: if you’ve been solicited, don’t do the “knee-jerk” donation. Carefully investigate and follow these steps. DON’T FORGET TO REPORT IT! As we’re all aware, charitable contributions are tax-deductible, so keep track of what you give and make sure to itemize your deductions. Keep all receipts of monies expended on NPO’s, including the tickets to those annual galas you attend. For more information on allowances and reporting information, speak with a CPA or tax attorney. So there you have it. While it may seem like an arduous process on the frontend, the goal is to establish a long-term relationship with a nonprofit which suits your personal passions and desire to make a difference in the community – any community – worldwide. So choose wisely, and you never know what could blossom. A visit to a village you helped build? Now that’s a fulfilling relationship that gives a memorable gift to everyone...

SPOTLIGHT ON REAL ESTATE

WHY SHOULD I INVEST IN

By Hooman Hamzehloui

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE? The economic crash of 2008 sent

commercial real estate prices into a free fall. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Real Estate, property values plummeted by 10.6% in the fourth quarter of 2008. As we all know, it only got worse from there. This created a spectacular buying opportunity for savvy investors. They didn’t have to reach for low hanging fruit. All they had to do was pick the fruit off the floor. Commercial real estate investors don’t make emotional buying decisions. Investors are primarily focused on getting the highest return on their investment while minimizing their risks. Usually the deals with the highest risk offer the highest rewards. A perfect example of this is a shopping center we sold to a client in January for $1,525,000. The property consisted of 149,000 square feet, sitting on 15 acres of land at a very busy intersection. Now this center was only 50% occupied and it needed some renovations, but it was still bringing in a net operating income of $166,000 a year. The main tenants of this center were Cash America Pawn and Mcdonalds. One doesn’t need to be Donald

Trump to see the value in this acquisition. Our client started with a fresh coat of paint and the center started to come to life. Prospective tenants began to fill the vacancies and the net operating incoming slowly started to climb. The Mcdonalds ground lease will soon be closing for over $1,500,000 dollars and our client will be playing on the house’s money. Within a year, they will have received all their money back, and they will have a shopping center that will bring in over $200,000 dollars a year until they decide to sell. As their occupancy reaches closer to 100%, that net operating income will only continue to rise. With annual escalators in the leases, that number will eventually reach north of $350,000 to $400,000 a year. Can you say “Show me the money?” This was such an incredible deal because it required a little work and some strategic planning. There are plenty of buying opportunities out there that will produce similar results. Keep in mind that in the game of high risk, high rewards real estate investing, it is imperative that you use the help of a seasoned commercial real estate professional. Before you choose your broker, ask them to show you their

recent resume of investment sales. Ask them to show you the letters of recommendations from their past clients. Don’t just take their word for it, look up the transactions online and verify if the numbers that they’re bragging about match up to the numbers recorded in the public record. The numbers don’t lie, but swampland sales people do.

LYNDA MILLER

Realtor, Certified Stager Lynda Miller has been a dynamic part of the Central Florida community for over twenty years now, both on the professional and personal levels. Well known for being the top Home Staging Real Estate Agent in the Orlando metropolitan area, Lynda is also a notable Central Floridian for her hard work and dedication to various Central Florida charitable organizations. Lynda’s success stems quite simply from loving what she does, and her passion, energy and creativity can be clearly seen in every area of her life.

As one of Watson Realty’s Top Producer for the past four years, Lynda has utilized both her creative talents and business acumen to become the area’s leader in staging homes for sales. Committed to providing outstanding customer service and personalized care for every client she works with, Lynda firmly believes that all aspects of the real estate industry are woven together, including focusing on the aesthetics of the home. When entering a home, she knows immediately what needs to be done, plus she has the creative skill to visualize how the home should be staged to sell quickly and for top dollar. “When I go into a client’s home, my first agreement with them is that it is no longer just their home, but a ‘product’ on the market for someone else to fall in love with.” Miller’s marketing expertise maximizes a home’s value, thus giving each client’s home an advantage over the competition

because she understands what sellers need and, ultimately, what buyers want. Lynda’s success has been recognized by receiving such prestigious accolades as being named in Orlando Style Magazine’s 5 Star Realtors and Orlando Magazine’s Hot 100 Real Estate All Stars for 2017. As a vibrant member of the Central Florida community, Lynda is noted as the “brainchild” for the Annual Watson Haunted House that takes place every Halloween. Being her favorite Holiday and time of the year, Lynda’s passion led her to collecting Halloween items over the years, including period furniture, animatronics and various props that she used to create the atmosphere for the perfect Haunted House. Initially producing the event in her own home, the event grew so large that it now takes over four months to organize, create and produce the annual theme. Utilizing the same creative spirit that she uses as an expert staging real estate agent on behalf of her clients, Lynda annually outdoes herself by creating the most amazing Haunted House in Orlando for charity! The Annual Watson Haunted House attendees are required to bring a donation of nonperishable food items to

In addition to her charitable and professional contributions to our community, Lynda has been happily married to her husband, Bob, a local pharmacist, for 20 years now. Her daughter, Katie, currently attends Rollins College. Lastly, Ava, her schnauzer, completes the Miller family.

MAN OF THE YEAR Special Promotional Feature

MICKEY HAGE

MAN OF THE YEAR

Broker/Owner Mickey Hage Real Estate Group “SOLD on Central Florida” Mickey Hage has been serving the Central Florida community for over 50 years. From humble beginnings at the age of six months, Mickey was adopted by and is the oldest son of Mike and Viola Hage. His story began when they brought him into their loving home where their family history was deeply rooted in Orlando. Mickey learned at a young age how to serve those around him and work hard. That work ethic came from the family around him as they led and served in the community. The Hage family throughout Orlando had established grocery stores. Mickey’s grandfather, Thomas Hage, owned and operated a grocery store at the corner of Division Street and Gore Avenue for years. Thomas Hage’s sons would carry on that tradition opening stores throughout greater Orlando. Mickey’s parents served the Winter Park community and opened their own store, Mike’s Grocery, at the corner of Morse Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue. The family still owns the property today and it’s currently leased to the restaurant The Coop. Working at an early age with his father in the grocery business, his father taught Mickey you should always treat your customers like family. That is a work ethic Mickey continues today. After growing up in the Conway community, a suburb of Orlando, and graduating from Colonial High School, Mickey served in the United States Marine Corp. Hard work and discipline would set him on a course of continuing to serve those around him and being a successful entrepreneur.

Mickey began a family of his own and married his wife of 47 years, Michelle. Together they have served our community and raised three children. Mickey would continue to work with his parents, Mike and Viola, and his brothers, Bruce and Ricky. They started a retail store in the Conway community called Brothers Three, a clothing store for men and women. Later he and his wife would open another clothing store for children called Kids-n-Stuff. Mickey coached at Conway Little League with teams sponsored by and representing both Brothers Three and Kids-n-Stuff. Family and community have always been important to Mickey; his heritage runs deep in Central Florida. The attribute that is most deeply rooted in his life is his faith in God. He said, “I consider this an honor, being chosen Man of the Year for Orlando Style magazine. Working for so many years I consider my success by keeping my priorities in this order: Faith, Family, Friends and being accountable with every person I come in contact with.” Anyone who knows Mickey will tell you his actions speak louder than his words. He lives by truth and integrity by always helping others. Over the years being a Real Estate Broker he has put those truths into action. As the Broker/Owner of Mickey Hage Real Estate Group he has specialized in real estate owned properties commonly known as foreclosures. Never judging how people came to those circumstances, Mickey helps while he is representing the bank. He works tirelessly to

help people relocate and have a fresh start. Mickey Hage Real Estate Group has recently expanded its market real estate profile to encompass commercial properties along with general real estate listings and sales. His awards over the years are countless. Awards ranging from being in the “Top 50 Solo Performers of Residential Salespeople” to local and national recognitions for being within the top 50 agents in sales. Putting years of awards aside, Mickey finds his greatest joy and success in his faith, family and serving others. Mickey Hage Real Estate Group is also an annual sponsor for the Seniors First Turkey Trot run in Downtown Orlando. Mickey is currently a member of Downtown Baptist Church where he serves on several committees. The man behind the success is a husband to Michelle, a dad to Shannon, Preston and Brett, a Poppy to his five grandchildren and a friend to all who know him. Mickey will always put others before himself and give. What a great honor for Mickey as he enters his 70th year being celebrated everyday by his family; especially today as he is named Orlando Style magazine’s Man of the Year.

Seeing his mother persevere through this tragedy has given him strength throughout his life. The Luciana

Windermere Isle, from Beazer Homes Where you can have your “happily ever after.

The Washington

Windermere Isle, from Beazer Homes, is quickly becoming a destination location in Windermere. Located just minutes from the most magical place on earth, a nightly fireworks show entertains all in this Horizons West neighborhood. Only open a few weeks, more than a dozen families have chosen to build a home in this beautiful setting. Conservation areas and water views are backdrops for this community of just over 100 homes. Rich landscaping surrounds visitors as they enter from Reams Rd. What is immediately evident is the updated exterior designs in Coastal, Tuscan, Art & Crafts and other style genres; streetscapes in Windermere Isle are unlike any other Beazer Homes neighborhood. What is the same? The answer is the award winning floorplans and focus on energy efficiency. Beazer Homes is a 2017 recipient of the Energy Star® Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award for commitment to well-built homes that reduce energy usage. Every home is individually tested to certify it meets rigorous energy efficiency standards.

There are nine different home designs available in Windermere Isle, two of which are modeled. The Luciana, with its updated Coastal exterior design, is a perennial best-seller that has a lot of flexibility in the layout and finish options. This 3,000 to 3,300 square foot home features an open flowing first floor and a central upstairs loft surrounded by bedrooms. The Washington model is another popular plan, ranging from 4,000 – 4,500 square feet with a first floor master bedroom and lots of plan flexibility. Home prices in Windermere Isle start in the high $300s. A centrally located amenity center featuring a pool and playground is another reason people choose Windermere Isle. As the Disney nightly fireworks show reminds us, in this neighborhood you can have your “happily ever after.”

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature

THE GOVERNMENT’S WAR ON FINANCIAL PRIVACY In 1970 the US Government began its efforts to do away with financial privacy with a series of laws that affect financial institutions, businesses, and individuals. The laws include criminal violations with long terms of imprisonment and civil penalties including forfeiture of bank accounts and other assets including the loss of one’s home. These laws apply even if an individual has no illegal income.

The Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) was the first major legislation designed to keep track of all financial banking activities. The government has added numerous statutes and regulations which require financial institutions to keep records on its customers. A financial institution includes not only banks but also: security brokerage firms, jewelry stores, pawnbrokers, and travel agencies; car, plane and boat businesses; insurance companies; real estate closing businesses and others. A financial institution must not only keep customer records, but must also report cash deposits or withdrawals in excess of $10,000 to the Treasury Department by filing a Currency Transaction Report (CTR). Financial institutions are also required to file Suspicious Activity Reports (SAR) for cash deposits of less than $10,000. The CTR and SAR require the financial institution to give the government a heads-up as to transactions which might otherwise go unreported unless the government inquired of a bank about its customer. The Government’s effort to keep track of everyone’s financial dealings does not end with efforts directed to financial institutions. Federal regulations also require any company or individual engaged in business to report a cash transaction or series of cash transactions with a customer that exceeds $10,000 over a 12-month period.

The government also keeps track of banking activities of US citizens with offshore bank accounts and cash coming in or out of the US. A person who brings in or takes out of the US over $10,000 in cash or negotiable instruments must disclose this activity by filing a government form upon leaving or returning to the US. If a person has over $10,000 in one or more foreign financial institutions, another report must be submitted to the Treasury Department every year with the income tax return. In 2010 the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) was passed creating an obligation on US citizens and residents with assets outside the United States, to disclose the assets by completing a form titled “Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets”. The amount required to trigger the obligation to report the foreign assets varies depending upon different factors. Fifty thousand dollars in assets may trigger the obligation to file the form. FATCA also requires offshore financial institutions to report its US customers to the Treasury Department and pay a portion of income earned on the accounts to the IRS. Many banks around the world are now refusing to take on US citizens as customers. These are just some of the laws designed to invade a person’s financial privacy. These laws apply even if a person is engaged in only legal activity, has committed no crimes, and is not trying to hide earnings of criminal activity. A person is subject to criminal prosecution and incarceration for failure to disclose financial information or for causing banks or other businesses to fail to file the required disclosure forms. The government does not have to hack into business records to invade financial privacy; its laws require businesses and individuals to give up the right to financial privacy or face criminal prosecution.
