GEDITORS LETTER

I

am delighted to bring you our Party Issue, packed with 57 pages of the most indulgent and most fashionable, digital content South Africa has to offer.

Who would have thought that you could get your fashion and beauty fix by paging through a digital GLOSSY magazine from your computer screen? GLOSSY Magazine allows you to soak up all the trends, and has everything fab females need to make them feel more glamorous, and all this for absolutely nothing! Speaking of glamorous, check out our new feature - ON TREND RIGHT NOW (page 6), which showcases all the hottest trends from our South African runways. Our local designers are also building a name for themselves, and this month GLOSSY contributor, Kate Gerke chats with David Tlale (page 44) and finds out why he was chosen to showcase at New York Fashion Week. It is also with this issue of GLOSSY that we say adios to 2009, and prepare our clean slates for “the big year” 2010. Don’t worry though, our fabulously, free website www.stylescoop.co.za will continue to keep you updated on all that’s hot and happening every day, so be sure to check it out. As for GLOSSY, we’ll be back on the 15th January 2010 with another smokin’ hot issue. If you’re on Twitter, follow me on www.twitter.com/stylescoop and be the first to know about the latest articles posted, todie-for competitions or to just catch up on my random ramblings. Lastly, a big thanks to everyone who helped make the past three issues of GLOSSY a huge success! See you again in 2010!

GSTREET

Behind every fashionista is someone who just doesn’t get it right. StyleScoop columnist PIPPA LYNCH reveals ...

what not to wear *Screech* Whaaaat?

Are those your pj’s? There I was on Saturday afternoon, minding my own business when my eyes were diverted away from my yummy Pollo Pizza at Spigas, by my friend subtely poking me in the ribs and gesticulately wildly under the table at this young lass (she was literally about 1/2 my age – not something I often have the privelege of saying, given my tender 26 years of life). We simply had to take a picture. You know – it’s a matter of right place, right time. In this outfit’s case, wrong place, wrong time. Great for a bender on a Friday night, but lunch on a Saturday afternoon? Seriously? Really? Dress Code and appropriate dressing is my final lesson students. Class adjourned.

I helped a friend of mine out at her recent Spring/ Summer launch for her boutique in Joburg. This was one of the ladies who came to the launch. She had a stunning pair of strappy heels from Edgars on, but paired it with what looked like her pj’s. Ill be the first to wax lyrical on the benefits (both mental and spiritual) of wearing one’s pj’s, but not to a launch at an exclusive boutique!

I’m dumbfounded when it comes to this particular “style“ of jeans. Why do people go for the acid-wash, unnaturally distressed denim? It is wholly unflattering and looks cheap. If you are a devout follower of this style, repent, throw them away. The style this season (and forever really) is gently ripped with a neatly worn-in effect. Not chemically treated to within an inch of its life. Think you can handle more bad style? Check out Pippa’s threepart series What Not To Wear on her Column “Street Style” on

Dumbfounded!

GFEARLESSFASHIONISTA

Mixing rock-chick style with skirts, dresses and bows is something that Natalia does with ease and that definitely makes her a fearless fashionista says JASNA ZELLERHOFF

ied. One day it can be very feminine, another it’s very girly and cute. I am a skirt and dress addict and I hardly wear any trousers! Shift dresses and cute little retro dresses are definitely my staples, no matter the season of the year. I love the nautical theme, which is an epitome of a summer outfit for me. Another big part of my style is rock chick, which is probably influenced by the music I listen to… It’s in a way expressing my music taste and I really enjoy heavy accessories and rock girl garments.

I first met “Honeybunny” on Chictopia, which led me to her really stunning blog. Her style is very different to a lot of the girls I have featured in the past. She loves skirts and dresses more than trousers, but mixes in a lot of rock-chick style. Meet the lovely, fabulously unique Natalia.

Whose style do you admire? I love Alexa Chung, Fearne Cotton and Kate Moss’ style. I’ve got to admit they’re my style icons.

What made you want to start a fashion blog? I’ve been watching other people’s style-blogs for some time and I have been very inspired by them. Apart from that I really felt the urge to share my style with people, so it just came to me naturally. Last but not least I wanted to participate in the blogger world more and exchange with other bloggers culturally.

Name your 5 all time favourite fashion items? 1. Chanel 2.55 bag, which still exists only in my dreams, 2. All of my bow brooches and cross ties, 3. My recently thrifted vintage satchel. 4. All of my black and white retro shirt dresses and 5. Studded shoes!

What is the best thing you have learnt from having a fashion blog? It totally broadened my horizons and inspired me to experiment more with my clothes! Besides, I’ve met so many interesting and fabulous people and made some blog friends as well. You can find Honeybunny on Chictopia, Lookbook, Flickr, Chicisimo.

FRUGAL FASHIONABLE South Africa’s top fashion designers tell FRANCINE HIGHAM how to be frugal and fashionable

Who best to tell us how to look fabulously chic, while being frugal than a fashion designer? Not just any fashion designer, but South Africa’s top fashion designers; David Tlale, Suzaan Heyns, Gavin Rajah, Karen Ter Mostuizen, the fabulous designing duo at Klûk, Stiaan Louw, Terrence Bray, Saskia Koerner, and the lovely sisters, Caren and Gina Waldman, from TWO. I’ve rounded them all up to get their advice on how we can be the best Recessionistas we can be! The general consensus? It’s certainly worthwhile saving up the pennies and investing in quality, like classic designer garments, even if there isn’t a recession, as it’s those investment pieces that will ensure you look fab,

DAVIDTLALE

(www.davidtlale.com) What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? A David Tlale black lace blouse. It compliments a look for ANY occasion, with a classic and modern fashion-forward appeal, for any season. What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? There is no compromise to style and it is entirely they way in which you put a look together that creates the style of fashion. A woman needs to look her best always and it’s a matter of sheer styling. Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? Life is an occasion; celebrate it in style and pure indulgence with a DAVID TLALE original. And with that said, I believe that a DT piece is everlasting and eternal. It’s not about compromising my designs, fabrications or quality to produce a range that is “more affordable. It’s a matter of a more intimate and personal shopping, that gives you the eye for your own sense of style that will be everlasting. Buying a piece of clothing is a fashion investment!

SUZAANHEYNS

Reinvent the way you look at things: An A-line, long skirt and high waisted harem pants can be pulled up to create a boob tube and belted in (to create) an all in one jumpsuit. Borrow your boyfriend’s jeans and belt them with a great vintage find. Weave ribbons around straps on heels to create a whole new look. Have your clothes re-tailored by an inexpensive tailor to reshape old styles i.e; Have shoulder pads put into an old jacket to create this season’s Belmain jacket shape look. Have a clothes swap with friends. Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? Every collection consists of classic pieces, wearable pieces and avant garde pieces. My belief is that good design is sustainable and in a recession, people may be even more willing to spend on an item which is well designed and can carry them through year after year.

GAVINRAJAH ”It’s certainly worthwhile saving up the pennies and investing in quality classic designer garments, even if there isn’t a recession, as it’s those investment pieces that will ensure you look fab regardless of whether it’s a financial crises or a fashion crises”

(www.suzaanheyns.com) What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? (Obviously finding it a little difficult to find only one essential item... Suzaan settles on four.) A great vintage belt, a tuxedo jacket, a good pair of opaque tights and a good, quality pair of flats. What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Red lipstick makes any outfit look great. Buy cheap vintage scarves to accessorize handbags, worn around the neck or tied in a bow.

(www.gavinrajah.com) What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? Unfortunately, I do not think one definitive item completes a wardrobe. A few pieces go towards creating a wardrobe that offers you the ability to transform yourself to suit an occasion. Once you get to this stage, I do not think that your wardrobe should be without a timeless and well made black dress.

What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Rather then shopping for many cheaper items cut back and spend only on items that are of great quality. These items will outlast a recession and you would have shopped wisely. If you are unable to afford the retail price, then bide your time and wait for sale time or shop around for an alternative. Women who have a wardrobe of great basics only need to add or accentuate their look by adding accessories or a colour to their wardrobe, which is part of the trend for the season. Do not buy items of clothing which do not compliment your figure, or if you have many doubts about wearing it. Impulsive shopping during recession sales is also not a wise thing to do. Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? Being in a recession has not affected

GFEATURE the way I design. My garments fall into a luxury goods sector and most people come to me because they appreciate the workmanship, quality and fine fabrics I use - Neither of these elements get any cheaper during a recession. My clients want things which have longevity and more importantly having something made, is far more emotionally engaging. Our ready-to-wear line is always timeless and classic and it has been like that since we started doing it. My clients get great wear out of their collections from us and I think this has held them in good stead in times of recession, as they are all well equipped to rely on their existing wardrobe from us to carry them through a recession. I do not compromise during a recession - its not good business practice, as there is life after tough economic times and our consumers have a certain level of expectation from us.

KAREN TER MOURSHUIZEN for LUNAR (www.lunarlife.co.za)

What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? A blazer with an interesting design twist! What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Buy quality pieces that make you happy for years and years. Buying fad fashion doesn’t work for me. I try to buy two of something when I really love it. There is nothing worse for me than when my favorite pair of jeans or T-shirt is worn out and I can’t replace it with the same again.

erything if it is worn with confidence and enjoyment! Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? John Galliano said: “Just because there is a financial recession there should not be a creative recession!” And that is our philosophy – we are still designing for the woman who wants to look different, feminine and classic... but with some edge!

STIAANLOUW

(stiaanlouw.blogspot.com) What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? I think it is important to always have a basic wardrobe, consisting of a well-fitted pair of black trousers, a simple T-shirt in a beautiful natural fibre jersey and a fitted jacket. These items can be worn in a variety of ways for day or night, or to the office and can be combined with seasonal trends or accessories for a more updated look. What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Investment pieces are key. I think the shift is away from mass consumerism and spending frivolously on trends that change so quickly these days. If you buy garments that are beautifully made from natural fabrics and invest in designer pieces that convey your own personality as opposed to buying trends, the chances are you will get more wear from it over a longer period of time.

Have you found that the global recession has influenced Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? the way you design? No! already. It’s timeless and makes any outfit look cool and urban. I think everyone needs to own a good denim jacket.

What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Think lasting quality not quantity. This should apply to how you shop in general, lean to investment buy - that way you can update for each season with only a few key items.

What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Gina: I think the most important thing is the basics. Rather splurge on luxurious, well cut, quality designer basics in neutral tones. TWO’s winter collection had every model in one soft long sleeve tee and a pair of long tapered leggings, with one or two pieces over - Iin other words, add a voluminous tee, or a boyfriend cardi, a paper bag skirt etc. This concept was inspired by the recession and the idea that you don’t have to own millions of clothes to achieve a well put together look.

Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? My collections have always focused on more classic items with a strong emphasis on quality, so a “budget” collection is never an option for us. We prefer to add value rather than cut costs. The recession has been good for consumer education - we have been and still are to some degree very wasteful consumers, all in the name of convenience, and I think it is time we all became more aware. The recession has proved valuable in forcing people to research and think more about their purchases.

SASKIAKOERNER from MISFIT

What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? Black, silk empire dress always works. I wear one from designer Meg Summs (Label: Fabric, available at Misfit). What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Misfit sells a great dip-dye rayon scarf that doubles up as a sarong or can be wrapped as a dress in many ways - It’s classical, fun and depending on the occasion, can be worn in any way! (I say a great budget buy, and perfect for summer!) Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? Misfit is all about the classics with a twist and we always offer good value on premium ranges of silks and chiffon dresses.

CARENANDGINAWALDMAN from TWO (www.twotwo.co.za)

What do you think is the one essential fashion item that every woman should have in her wardrobe? Gina: Leggings the length this season is more kaftan than hip - so you can turn all your dresses into tops by adding leggings Caren: I am in love with my old denim jacket right now, I bought it when I was living in New York in the late 90’s. I fished it out of a cupboard at my mom’s house and haven’t stopped wearing it since-- and it’s been a couple of months

Caren: I agree with Gina in that a few good items are better than lots of very trendy things. Buy classics that will last you a few seasons. I really love wearing layers and this looks really chic with beautiful accessories which can make any old outfit look great. We made beautiful pleated scarves for this coming season and wearing one will make any outfit look new. Have you found that the global recession TERRENCE BRAY has influenced the way you design? Gina: The best thing about the way we design is that it is based on the things we wear and the way we wear them. And the recession has definitely affected the way we make purchases. Rather than making a budget range - which would have to require us spending less on the garments and therefore letting the quality drop - we have put more attention into the detailing of the cut and versatility of the garments. Caren: Our prices have always been very reasonable for designer clothing. As Gina says, the detailing of the cut and the versatility of the garments has become a real focus for us while still keeping our garments affordable to everyone.

Johannesburg Fashion Week. Tell us a bit about the collection that earned you that award. The inspiration behind that collection was a celebration of the African woman. Over the years we have done men and women’s collections, but in light of the first ever Arise African Fashion Week, I thought it would be great to celebrate the African Diva in all aspects.

His extravagant, statement garments induce African pride, in the most euro-centric fashionista’s in the country. I was lucky enough to get the star treatment and experience the sensual Terre & Mer facial from Thalgo at the gorgeous Serendipity Body & Beauty Day Spa in Durban www.serendipitybeauty.co.za

I arrive for my Terre & Mer Organic Facial Treatment and feel instantly at ease. There is soft music playing in the background (that is used specifically for this facial), which transports my mind to a lazy day on a white sandy beach. Before my therapist, Farana starts my facial, I am treated to a “Welcome Touch” - A 10 minute back relaxation (which is part of the Terre & Mer experience) and is unlike any massage I’ve had before. Farana uses Organic Lavender Massage Oil and combines a series of special techniques, which help to take all my troubles away - Bliss. Ten minutes later and my Organic Facial Treatment begins with a gentle, eco-friendly Cleansing Milk and a Lotion with organic, orange flowers. This is followed by a Marine Scrub, with organic almond shells. Next, my skin is treated to an Essential Oil Concentrate, followed by a Mediterranean Infusion of apricot kernels and lavender flowers, which provide a stimulating and oxygenating effect. I am also treated to an aromatic, facial massage, in which a Vital Balm is worked into the skin. Aftewards a double mask is left on my skin. Once the mask is removed, a Vital Fluid is applied, providing a protective finishing to my skin. One and half hours later and I battle to open my eyes. I am completely relaxed and my skin has never looked more radiant. Thalgo Terre & Mer embraces the pure alchemy of the sea and organic plant life from the heart of the Mediteranean.
