Featuring Lodi’s Winery of the Year Oak Farm Vineyards

My work in advertising and media began in 1998, opening Netfactors Design Studio, a web design and print media company. Being raised by a family of teachers and artists, this new concept of the “internet” where the joining of logic, design and art intrigued me. In 2007 we introduced Style of Your City online community magazines. At that time we had 6 online magazines in the Central Valley; Lodi, Elk Grove, Stockton, Manteca, Tracy & Modesto. From the very beginning stages of the magazines there had always been a print version in mind. We’ve kept the Lodi and Stockton online magazines going almost 8 years now and finally our print magazines have become a reality. Life is definitely a circle and I have been graciously intertwined with past and present friends and colleagues that have contributed to the materialization of this project. I would like to thank my husband, Steve, for his patience and understanding as I have dedicated countless hours over the past 8 months working solely on this project. A tremendous thank you to the following people. My daughter, Audreana Lang, for help with location selection and beautiful photography. Tory Meath for cover design. Shelly Guantone, for endless help with locations, articles, hours of sharing thoughts and ideas, introductions to many of her personal friends and clients of Guantonio’s and the time she has taken to meet with them to introduce our print concept. Tracie Rosenzweig, for returning to her job with Style of Lodi magazine after 7 years absence. Her dedication and enthusiasm has given me that last push to dig in and get this done. This would not have been possible without each of you! So, what is the definition of community? The dictionary says, “ A social, religious, occupational, or other group sharing common characteristics or interests and perceived or perceiving itself as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which it exists”. Lodi is a stand out among communities for certain! Our members are distinctively prideful, dedicated, talented, respectful, and generous. Whether it’s a chef preparing prized family recipes, or a photographer capturing cherished life memories, each person is an artist of their work and the relationships of community are the canvas, the paint and the brushes that create the work of art that is our community. Thank you & Enjoy!

e sat down with Dan Panella to talk about Oak Farm Vineyards and his deep family roots. The history of the Panella family is quite intriguing. Originally from Italy, Dan’s grandfather, Ralph, came to the area in the early 1900’s and began to work farming grapes, cherries and walnuts. In 1934 he started the largest agricultural trucking company in California, Panella Trucking. Ralph was joined by his son, Bob, in 1955 and Panella Trucking operates to this day. After earning a degree at UC Davis in wine making, Dan has used his skills to develop award winning boutique wines and continue as a 3rd generation farmer. Oak Farm wines are available for purchase in the tasting room on the property and in select markets across the United States. The Panella family invites you to visit and enjoy their beautiful and passionate vision, Oak Farm Vineyards, a place for those who truly appreciate the celebration of great wine, family, and friends. Come relax, take it all in and enjoy a glass of amazing wine.

Oak Farm Vineyards

Newlyweds Dan & Heather Panella own the gorgeous new Oak Farm Winery. It is quite simply spectacular!! There is much to be seen, from the magnificent structure to the beauty of the landscape designed by Heather, the projects landscape architect. Not only was a new vineyard being planted around the winery, but also cultivating was a beautiful friendship, love and a marriage. The joining of this new family includes each of Dan & Heathers previous children, Jake who is 8 , Lily and Nolan are 6, and Ella who is 4 years old. The Devries mansion built in 1876, lays in the midst of it all in it’s own majestic grandeur and serves as home to the family. A serene lake and rose garden grace the back yard along with the big white barn. This being the site of the original tasting room began in 2009 and now used for weddings and events.

Lodi Lake is a beautiful, unique and tranquil place well used by visitors and residents of Lodi. The lake was developed

in 1934, fed by the nearby Mokelumne River. The lake originally took form as a shallow, seasonal lake created by makeshift dams made of brush and wood in the late 19th century. The Woodbridge Dam was built in 1910, thus making the “back water” lake even bigger. The formation of the Woodbridge Irrigation District in 1924 called for more water storage. The lake became larger still. Finally, in 1934, ownership of the lake became official to the city of Lodi by a generous donation by landowner Louis T. Mason. The scenic body of water is surrounded by mature oak, elm and walnut trees as well as other plants and animals original to this area. Taking a stroll through the lush east end of the property will take you back to the days when the Mokolumne Indians made this their home.

Much of the original wild life still inhabits the area including deer, raccoons, squirrel, possum, turtles and a variety of geese, ducks and other birds. The lake maintains a low 70’s temperature even in the heat of summer. Swimming at Lodi Lake is made easy at the south westside with it’s designated beach location, which has a swim area with life guards which is clearly marked with buoys and is surrounded by a sandy shoreline. The childrens’ wading pool is nearby along with clean and comfortable showers and restroom facilities. Over the past few years many improvements have been made to the lake and it's facilities including a recently added new boat house. Amenities at the lake include barbecue grills, picnic tables, horseshoe pits and the amphitheater, as well as grass. The lake is a beautiful setting for a spring, summer or fall wedding or special activities, along with other seasonal events such as the Lodi Zinfest and 4th of July celebration and fire works. For more information about Lodi Lake call (209) 333-6742.

Enjoying a typical day at the lake...

Relax on a blanket during a sunny after noon embracing the beauty and tranquility. Guided Tours on the Mokelumne in a canoe, stand up paddle board or kayak are offered by local excursions

companies. Mokelumne River boat and Group tours along the scenic Mokelumne are offered May through October. The one-hour tours are available by appointment only at (209) 333-6890.

Nature Walks with Docents lead nature buffs through the Mokelumne River riparian habitat on an educational and visually pleasing tour. Hikers are likely to run across a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish on the nature trail.

The Discovery Center offers educational programs for children and families on the lake area and in the

surrounding habitat. Both the center and the nature walk are by appointment only

Boat Launching is available daily from 8 a.m. to dusk. Gas-powered water craft, tailored or not are not allowed on

the lake but may use for river access. Non-trailored canoes, rafts, radio controlled boats and electric powered crafts are only charged the entrance fee. Style of Lodi Magazine | A SIP OF SUMMER 2015

Summer Adventures & Escaping the Valley Heat

——– CLARKS HOLE ——– This swimming hole is located in the Auburn State Recreation Area. Clark's Hole is one of the best! It’s a short but steep trail down to the hole with rugged cliffs around it. This is just above where the Middle Fork American joins the North Fork American. It is not recommended that you swim in the Middle Fork, which is a challenging whitewater rafting river. The Recreation Area stretches for miles along both forks. To get there, take RT 49 south. Keep on Rt 49 through Auburn. In about 3 miles RT 49 will cross the American River. Park your vehicle here and follow the trail upstream on the North Fork. It’s about a 5 mile hike until you pass under the highway bridge at Forrestville Rd. Then in another .25 miles you will come upon Clark's Hole. It’s big and deep! 10

Day Hikes To Area Swimming Holes NATURAL BRIDGES

This beautiful two-mile round trip hike will lead you to spectacular limestone caverns that have been carved out by Coyote Creek. To get there take Highway 4 to Parrots Ferry Road. Go about 4 miles and park at the marked trail head on Parrotts Ferry Rd 3.7 mi south of Hwy 4 at Vallecito and 6 miles north of Columbia. An old unused segment of Parrotts Ferry Rd that serves as a parking lot. This hike is short and might be considered easy for most, but there are a few short steep segments. After passing through the “wiggle gate” the trail that descends a short distance along the old fill slope. . It then crosses a small drainage and follows a historic road. The final descent is over a footpath that is steep and partially stepped section. The footpath ends at the downstream outlet of a Natural Bridge. We made or trip in the beginning of June and the water was freezing cold from the snow pack run off but it was still and amazing experience!

——–FEATHER FALLS——– The hike to Feather Falls is about an 8 mile round trip in the Plumas National Forest. It takes you to a 640 foot high water fall, which has an observation deck with a spectacular view! The swimming holes are not at the bottom of the falls, but before you get to the observation deck on this trail. The trail will fork and you will need to take the right fork uphill and in about .25 miles you will come to the Fall River, which feeds Feather Falls. There are and several swimming holes to choose from. To get here, take the Olive Highway which is RT 162 east for 6.7 miles, turn right on Forbestown Road for 6.3 miles, turn left on Lumpkin Road for 11.4 miles to the signed turnoff for Feather Falls. Turn left at sign and drive 1.5 miles to the trailhead. Style of Lodi Magazine | A SIP OF SUMMER 2015

Lodi Locals—–

There are no introductions required here. If you’ve been around Lodi for any period of time you know Barbara and Joe Fiori and their family. We stopped in to talk with them about their famous sandwich shop. They graciously took time out of their very busy day to share some stories of the last 33 years of owning this Lodi business. With virtually no business knowledge, Joe reluctantly but finally took his dads advice and opened Fiori’s Butcher Shoppe in 1983. Back then, ordering a side of beef, pork or lamb in a meat market was common. From that time on Joe has cured

Fiori’s Butcher Shoppe

his own pastrami, corned beef, smoked salmon, home-made bratwurst and beef and peppered jerky all of which fly off the shelves. Fiori’s is and has always been a joint family venture, with Joe’s mom, Joyce, preparing the bookwork and wife, Barbara, working while raising the children. All generations are now involved in running the business. In no time, the shop was well known for delicious, top quality cuts of meats, sausage and cold cuts. Many customers inquired about buying sandwiches which prompted expansion into the building next door. In 1995, Fiori’s began serving sandwiches. The Fiori’s base their success on several things. Most importantly, their customers and reputation in the community. Although they have an enormous, loyal customer base, the market is always changing. “We constantly have to reinvent ourselves to keep up with competition,” explained Barbara. One challenge happened when “big box” stores entered the picture with their ability to access specialty items and purchase them in large quantities. The Fiori’s continually answer back to these challenges and turn them into successes.

The solution….create delicious, gourmet food made fresh in their kitchen. They have done just that...hiring the best cooks and bakers and providing home made pastries, breads, cakes, pies, quiche and soups along with their famously delicious sandwiches made by curing and roasting their own quality meats.

We had a “delectable” visit with Joe and Barbara Fiori beginning with our taste buds and next our visit with them to learn their story of ongoing success and the hard work, foresight and perseverance it takes to stay on top. We observed the dining room packed to capacity with happy customers and enjoyed the many amazing smells coming from the kitchen, which was added in 2005. The aroma of freshly baked pies, scones, bars, quiches, cheesecake, soups and foccacia filled the air. They are truly “The Best of The Best”

Local Beat—–

\àËá `âá|v àÉ lÉâÜ XtÜá g{|á fâÅÅxÜ |Ç à{x _Éw| TÜxt4 Lodi’s music scene has come alive in the summer months. The Open Mic events have played a huge part in this. While Lodi has continually had great local bands, these events have given exposure to some new talent. Woodbridge Crossings possibly has some of the best turnout in the Lodi area, not only drawing in lots of musicians, but lots of fans. Owner, Steve Ding, is always in the house, so it works as an audition opportunity as well. If you haven’t been to an Open Mic event in Lodi, take some time to check out one of these venues. You will not be disappointed should you have the opportunity to hear some of our local talent such as Bill Stevens, Dana DeMoulin or Rob Stevenson.

Woodbridge Crossing Come enjoy live, local music from some of the area's top bands on Wednesday (Open Mic Night), Friday and Saturday.

f{xÄÄç ZâtÇàÉÇx XzzÑÄtÇà VtÑÉÇtàt This is a very versatile condiment. It can be used as an appetizer with some crostini bread slices or crackers. You can grill some chicken and plate this up with some Polenta, top with the Caponata and then place some grilled chicken on top for a complete meal. It is also very tasty over pasta or add some fresh Pecorino or Parmesan cheese, too!

Ingredients 2 Eggplants 1 TSP Salt 3/4 C Olive Oil 2 -3 Garlic Cloves 2 Yellow Onions 1 lb Roma Tomatoes diced or 1 15 oz can San Marzano Tomatoes 1 TSP Tomato Paste 1C Parsley—chopped 1TSP Red Pepper Flakes 4 Celery Stalks 1 can Black Pitted Olives drained 1 12 Oz jar Imported Olives 1/4 C Capers drained and rinsed 1/2 C Pine Nuts or 1/4 C Walnuts cut to the size of Pine Nuts 1/4 C Red Wine Vinegar 2 TSP Sugar or Brown Sugar

Method Wash eggplant & cut off top. Cut in 1" full length slices and salt on some paper towels. Let this rest for 1 hour. Take a fresh paper towel and pat dry. Make sure to dry these as much as possible. Heat oven to 425 degrees. Line 2 ea 11” x 15” baking pans with foil and spray foil with cooking spray. Brush both sides of eggplant with olive oil. Place onto baking pans in single layer and then roast eggplant for 15 minutes in 425 degree oven. After 15 minutes turn each piece over and roast other side for another 15 minutes .Remove from oven and cool slightly. Slice and dice onion and celery into 1/2" - 1" cubes depending on your personal desire. Chop the parsley and put into a bowl or to the side of the cutting board. Heat oil and cook the onions for 2 minutes and then add the celery and cook all 7-8 minutes. Add nuts (optional). Stir and cook 1 min. Add all remaining ingredients and stir well to incorporate. Cover and cook 20 minutes. Remove from heat, set aside and bring this mixture to room temperature. Refrigerate if not using right away, or you can use once it is room temperature. Serve with crostini or polenta as I suggested above. * If you refrigerate make sure to bring to room temperature before serving. Doing this will bring out the flavors of each individual ingredient making it so much more flavorful and satisfying too! Mangia ~ Enjoy . Recipe by Shelly Guantone 24

Eggplants Are Packed With Antioxidants & Extract May Kill Cancer Cells

Peak Season August to September but eggplant are plentiful year round

History Of The Eggplant The eggplant is native to India and Pakistan and was first domesticated over 4000 years ago. The fruit was introduced to China around 500 B.C. The Chinese hybridized their own varieties of different shaped and colored eggplants. The migration of the eggplant continued in the 9 – 12th centuries to the Middle East and westward to Egypt. The moors introduced the eggplant to the Spaniards and the fruit became popular all over Europe. The Spaniards thought the eggplant was an aphrodisiac and referred to as “Berengenas” or “The Apple of Love.” This of course added greatly to the popularity of the unusual fruit. The love affair with the eggplant took a downward turn in Northern Europe where Albert of Cologne referred to the fruit as "Mala Insana" or "Mad Apples" (a take off of the Italian name "melanzana"). The fruit was thought to cause insanity if it was eaten. It seems the commoners got over that and by the 1600's several varieties migrated from Naples to Germany.

About The eggplant is a member of the nightshade (Solanaceae) family to it is akin to the potato, tomato as well as the tomatillo and chayote. Although we typically call the eggplant as a vegetable it is really a fruit. While there are many variations of eggplant the most common in the US are “Black Beauty” (the large, dark glossy typical grocery store variety) and Japanese, the long slender version sometimes light purple. The English actually gave the fruit the name of "eggplant" referring to one varieties egg shape. To much of Europe the eggplant is referred to as an "aubergine" and Italy it is called melanzana.

Eggplant Varieties This is just a sampling of a few of the many eggplant varieties available. See the sources section for links to sites with seeds and more information on varieties.

Western (Globe) Eggplant This is your

common grocery store variety. They are typically large with glossy dark skin. Use for eggplant parmesan or nice large slices for frying or grilling. Or cut in cubes and use in our Turkey Eggplant Chili recipe.

Japanese or Asian This is one of my

favorites. The Japanese long, slender eggplant is great for small servings. Slice lengthwise and grill or bake. We used Japanese eggplant for our Eggplant Parmesan. Also you can slice thin and use to wrap other ingredients.

Egg Shaped There are many egg-shaped varieties in purple, white and variegated like the picture shown. This variety is name Caliope. These are fun to grow and are practical for some recipes.

Uses For Eggplant With such a long culinary

evolution eggplant uses are many and include, grilling, frying, baking or stewing and dips. The practice of "breading" keeps the spongy fruit from absorbing too much oil when fried.

Eggplants make a very good meat substitute for vegetarian cooking. How To Buy Choose firm, glossy skinned fruits and store refrigerated until used. As your eggplant ages it will become more bitter. To prepare overripe fruit first cut the eggplant in slices and lay in a colander. Sprinkle generously with salt and allow to 'sweat' for an hour. Rinse before use.

Bueno Italiano is owned by Sarah Coldani Randall and runs with the help of her daughter, Heather. While the restaurant is a great place for lunch or dinner, the catering services are phenomenal. From calamari appetizers to sit down dinners, the chefs are professional and the dishes are made from authentic Italian recipes. We recommend you stop in for the house favorite, Sarah’s lasagna. You can dine in the charming cafe or outside on the beautiful garden patio. Be sure to try Heather’s homemade desserts or an after dinner latte. From start to finish, you will be pleasantly surprised. Style of Lodi Magazine | A SIP OF SUMMER 2015

Lakewood Meats Lakewood Meats and the Roster family have a long known reputation in Lodi since the early 1970’s. The Roster family has owned the business since it opened in 1971. The business has been handed down for three generations. Most recently, Rochelle and her husband Anthony Holder took over the business from Rochelle’s father, Jim Roster, in July 2014. A close family friend and employee, Bruce Albers, who has worked for the company since 1971, has helped to maintain the wonderful standard set forth by Rochelle's grandfather of supplying outstanding cuts of meat, sausages and condiments. The newest edition to the Lakewood Meats family is Brett Parks. Brett, Bruce and Jim make a great working Team bringing substantial meat products to this quaint spot on Ham Lane. The long time family business is now Rochelle and Anthony’s pride and joy, along with their six children: Kaylee, nine years old;

starting left: Jim Roster, Rochelle Holder, Brett Parks & Bruce Albers

Kendall, Sienna and Elle, eight year old triplets; and Dante and Lina who are almost 2 years old! Rochelle is a certified instructor of 'hot' yoga, which she professes helps her to maintain her busy life along with support from her mom. Rochelle and Anthony rejuvenated the shop and have worked day and night to create an updated fresh look. They tastefully transformed this local store into a welcoming, beautiful, fun spot to shop.

316 Ham Lane, Lodi

Be sure to visit and peruse the large selection of sausages, ground beef, steaks, ribs, pork and the top of the line Creek Stone Meats they offer as well!

The store supports a fresh scene and is accessorized with brand new shelving to showcase incredible specialty jellies, mustards, sauces, such as pesto, and especially unique pastas straight from Italy. These new items have been well received by customers new and old! Rochelle has a vision and a motto as the baton has been passed to her to keep Lakewood Meats up to the standards set forth by her family, which is: we sell only

“Food Good Enough To Serve My Own Family". As if Rochelle doesn't have enough on her plate, she is in the process of creating her own line of sausage:

The Butcher's Daughter'. This will be a sausage that is made with top of the line, healthy, organic ingredients. Come see the

Curry Farms & Country Store

We had the pleasure of meeting Tony Ferriera, owner of Curry Farms Country Store and Deli. Besides a bountiful selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, Curry Farms has scrumptious baked breads, pies, quiche and deli sandwiches, including a tri-tip sandwich that is a favorite of everyone we have talked to. The store also boasts a great selection of fresh salads, homemade soups and chili. Tony is funny and friendly and generously allowed us to sample his food and see what we thought for ourselves. The cook and baker, Patty Brown, is phenomenal! We have been hearing about this spot for quite awhile from folks who frequent Curry’s for lunch and rave about the food.

Many unique gourmet items hand selected by owners Tony & Julie Ferreira.

Delta Barrel Balsamic Vinegar Papapavlo Classic Greek Salad Dressings Corto Olive Oils We chatted with Tony and learned that in addition to running Curry Farms, his wife, Julie, has worked for Aspire Public Schools in the Special Education Department for the last six years. Both are lifelong Lodians.

Tony grew up on his families local ranch and vineyard. Tony and Julie opened the produce end of Curry Farms in February of 2013, and now supply fresh produce to many local businesses and residents. You may have seen them supporting our very own farmers market in downtown Lodi. One year later they decided to add the deli and baked goods along with the dining area. 30

PET’S & THEIR PEOPLE A LIFETIME OF FRIENDSHIP...Ava’s story

Hi! I am Ava, I am one of the lucky ones. I was 7 ½ weeks old, pitbull puppy, and I was injured horribly by an abusive person. I was Going to be put down. Thanks to a post on Facebook, my Mom, Tracie Rosenzweig, found me and came and got me. I had such severe swelling they thought my back or legs were broken. It took weeks of rehabilitation, special diets, love and lots of visits to Dr. Turner at Arbor Pet Clinic for me to become a healthy happy puppy. Today I’m almost 6 months old and I can run, jump and play now. Sadly, I have lots of friends out there who have been abused or abandoned because they are sick or in need care. My Mom started a fund to raise money so we can continue to help pups like me. I am her biggest success and I am pretty cute so I am the face you will see on Ava & Friends Rescue Fund. Please donate and help us help more pups like me. We will have a fundraiser coming in the Fall. Watch for it in Style of Lodi Magazine. DONATE LINK visit www.StyleOfLodi.com and click on Ava’s picture Remember...100% of donated funds go to rescue and care of other pup friends that are just like me!

Thank you! All My Love,

Tät

TASTING ROOM EDIQUETTE When visiting a wine tasting room consider yourself a guest. Many small, boutique wineries are family-run and often the families reside on the property. The owners and staff want everyone to enjoy their visit. Expectations in wine tasting rooms are different than at wine events such as First Sip and the Spring Wine Show or downtown wine bars. After visiting many wineries in our Lodi

The Ambience in a Winery Tasting Room is One of a Subtle Sophistication ATTIRE Your attire should be semi-dress clothes, however, shorts, flip flops and athletic shoes are acceptable especially in the warm climate of our Central Valley.

PARFUME & COLGNES Do not wear perfume or cologne the day you are visiting winery tasting rooms. The smell interferes with a wine's aroma, not only for you, but also for those tasting by you.

CONVERSATION & TONE In the elegance of a winery tasting room, loud outside voices are not appropriate. Conversational tones are perfect and fit in well with talking about the wines you taste and mingling with other wine enthusiasts who have common interests. Do take the time to talk to other visitors. It’s interesting to meet others with a passion for wine. Some visitors are new to wine. Never belittle someone for what they think about a wine. Don't act or sound like a wine snob. There are always those who know less or more about wine than you.

COHERNACY If you appear drunk, the tasting room attendant is not permitted, by law, to serve you even if it is a tasting. Drunken behavior has no place in the atmosphere of the tasting room. Wineries deal with this behavior in different ways, most often you will be asked to leave. 46

BUSY TIME Tasting rooms can be crowded on weekends. Weekdays are generally slower and wine hosts have more time to talk about the wines you taste. In either case, if the tasting room is busy, do not elbow your way to the tasting bar. If the tasting room is busy, consider stepping back to discuss your wine and enjoy the tasting with other like-minded people. This gives others room to step up for a tasting. On busy days, some wineries will set up tasting tables or bars outside the tasting room. Give yourself plenty of time at a winery. Relax and enjoy the wine tasting and the ambiance of the tasting room. Many wineries have gift or art displays to browse while tasting wines. Take your time tasting and enjoy what they have to offer.

Style of Lodi Magazine | A SIP OF SUMMER 2015

PRESENATION OF WINE & EXPRESSION OF TASTE The wines for a tasting are presented in a particular order based upon the style of wine. If you choose not to drink a particular wine that’s fine. Gently cover your wine glass with your fingers to indicate you do not want to taste a wine. However, keep in mind that the person next to you may very well enjoy it. want lunch check out the restaurant. It is so much more subtle than declaring, “I don’t like that wine.” Not all wine drinkers like all wines and wine hosts understand this. Visitors do not need to announce to everyone that they dislike a particular wine. Remember that it is perfectly acceptable for you to dislike a wine.

Style of Your City CStyleOfYourCity.com . StyleOfLodi.com . StyleOfStockton.com

TASTING ROOM EDIQUETTE UNPALLETED WINE What should you do with the wine in your glass after you have tasted? If you do not want the rest of the wine in your glass, you can pour it into a dump bucket. It is really okay. In addition, it may be okay to spit your wine into the bucket. However it might be easier to spit into a cup. Ask if there is a cup that you can use. You can then dump the contents from the cup into the dump bucket. FOOD Some wineries will set out tiny crackers or tiny bites of cheese. This is not meant for large consumption. The purpose of the crackers, dips or cheese is to cleanse the palate and to help you to decide how the wine pairs with food. Some wineries also have restaurants. Many wineries encourage visitors to bring a picnic lunch if they wish. Frequently picnic tables or patio tables are available. Ask in advance if it is okay to bring a picnic lunch and where to picnic on the grounds. NOTE: Do not bring wine from another winery or any other kind of alcohol. Laws restrict wineries and many are only allowed to have their own alcohol on their premises.

TASTING OF FRUIT Wine growers, winery staff and visitors always appreciate good manners. If you have the opportunity to visit a vineyard, do not pick the grapes. If you would like to taste a wine grape at harvest time, be sure to ask prior to doing so. Some wineries don’t mind visitors strolling through their vineyards and taking a picture or two as long as they do not disturb the grape growing process. The grapes are there to produce wine and they are picked during a very precise time period decided by the sugar quality needed to produce specific wines. As well the grower has dedicated countless hours of time and expense into preparing for the bounty of the harvest. POURING Another major “Do Not Do” is to pick up a bottle and pour your own tasting. Let the wine consultant or server pour the wine. BUYING WINE When you visit a winery, if you like the wine and want to buy it that’s terrific, but it is not obligatory. The majority of tasting rooms charge a fee to sample approximately 5 wines. A general practice is to credit the tasting fee towards a bottle purchase. PLANNING YOUR VISIT Advance planning is the key to a successful winery outing. The majority of wineries in our area have websites. A Google search, a visit to our Wine & Visitor Centers website or the Style of Lodi online magazine will makes it easy to locate the wineries you would like to visit. Websites may include hours, types of wines, tour availability and directions and

LARGE GROUPS Call in advance for groups larger than five. Some wineries do not have room for buses or limousines. Other wineries like to know in advance if large groups will be arriving so they can provide enough staff. Tasting or drinking wine on an empty stomach is not a good idea. TIPSY TIPS Eat well before you go to the winery. The more food in your stomach the less alcohol will affect you. Take bottled water and be sure to drink it especially if you will be visiting another winery. Plan on drinking as much water as you do wine. This is also vitally important when the weather is hot in our Central Valley. TOURS Each winery tour focuses on what is important to their winery. However, most wineries include a visit to the press pad where the grapes arrive from the vineyard. Included will be the tank room and barrel room. Most wineries like to include the history behind their winery. Some of these histories include winemakers who have come to the new world to start a winery and others are entrepreneurs who are fascinated with winemaking. Tours add to the experience and can provide great photo opportunities. Ask questions. The winery staff is usually very knowledgeable about the wine, winery and vineyards. In some cases, the staff will have a notebook behind the counter where they can check for information. Remember not everyone knows everything about wine. The wine culture can be a fun learning experience for everyone.

Keep these tips in mind and you should have a wonderful and memorable tasting experience

W|yyxÜxÇà gçÑxá Éy exw j|Çx Wine is served in almost every party nowadays. Suppose, you are invited to a party and there are wines being served. You know only about red wine and ask for it. To your surprise, you are asked to choose from various red wines; Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, etc. You end up confused, thinking which wine to choose from. Here's your guide to different types of world-famous red wines. Wine is an alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice. The process involves using various kinds of yeast, which consume sugar present in the juice and convert them to alcohol. Wines are generally named after the fruit they are made from. For example, wine made from apple is called apple wine, or if it's made from grape, is called grape wine.

Here's an interesting fact about the color of wines. Mostly, all kinds of grape juices are colorless. Grapes are soaked with their skin, until the red color bleeds out; this is how red wines get the color. In the process, the amount of tannin present increases. Tannin is a natural substance present in wines responsible for the flavor. Tannin also helps in the aging process, hence, wines with high amount of tannin age faster.

Some of the best red wines are

UtÜuxÜt Barbera is a wine from. It has almost similar attributes of Merlot, but is not as famous. Barbera is acidic, light in tannin and is used as a blending wine. This Italian wine contains flavors of plum fruit and black cherry, and is also widely used in California. Barbera is very volatile and can be served with many popular dishes.

VtuxÜÇxà ftâä|zÇÉÇ Cabernet Sauvignon, often referred to as 'The King of Red Wines', it is the most common red wine in America. It originated in the Bordeaux wine region of France. This wine is often considered as one of the best varieties in the world. Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and is purple in color. This wine is aged in oak barrels for many years. Some of the best Cabernets are aged up to 15 years. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grow well in warm climates, so the wine takes more time to mature. In our area the Napa Valley is known as ‘Cab Country’. Cabernets have a flavor of black currant and a spicy aroma. Cabernet Sauvignon is often taken as the base wine for making famous blends like, Chateau Mouton Rothschild. This wine has many health benefits, as it helps to prevent cardio vascular diseases. Cabernet Sauvignon is best served with red meat.

There are numerous types of red wines. Making an exhaustive list of red wines is almost impossible.

Meet the owners of Twisted Barrel Winery, Michael Salimbeni & Mark Tanner. We had a fun visit with these two long time friends that have created one of Lodi’s newest tasting rooms, recently opened in mid January 2015. Mark inherited his wine making skills from his father, Vern Tanner, who has perfected his trade making home wines for over 30 years. Vern continues sharing his unique and “Outside The Box Style” as Mark says, to create the Twisted Barrel wine label. Michael, Mark & Vern are proud to be a part of the ever growing wine industry in Lodi and have many upcoming events in the works to showcase their new wines and just have fun! It’s obvious they love what they do! Visit the tasting room at The Twisted Barrel!

Most novice wine drinkers often choose Cabernet or Merlot. But, as consumers become more knowledgeable, they opt for something new. Malbec is becoming quite a brand with oenophiles (wine conneseaur). This grape is generally found in Cohors and South West France. In the 1800s, a French agricultural engineer experimented with the idea of growing the Malbec grapes, and his experiment was successful. The grapes produced in Argentina are much softer and contain less tannin, which makes the wine suitable for blending. The wine is dark and juicy containing flavors of plum, raspberry and chocolate. Malbec is best served with roasted meat.

Sangiovese is a signature red wine grape from Tuscany region of Italy. Tuscany is the agricultural heartland for this grape. This grape takes time to mature and lingers longer on the vine. Italian Chianti and Chianti Classico are two good example of wines made from Sangiovese. The name Sangiovese comes from the word sanguis jovis which means 'blood of jove'. Jove is the Roman name for god Jupiter. First time drinkers may find Sangiovese wine quite acidic. It has a fair amount of bitterness because of the presence of high quantity of tannin. Sangiovese can be served with Italian cuisine.

`xÜÄÉà Merlot (mare-lo) means easy to drink. This is a perfect red wine for first-time drinkers, as it is very soft and light. This wine is made from the merlot grape, and is deep in color. Merlot wine is generally less tannic, having high alcohol content. It has the flavor of cherry and plum. This wine is mild and less acidic. Popularly grown in Bordeaux region of France, Merlot is now grown in California, Washington, Oregon, Italy and Australia as well.

c|ÇÉà aÉ|Ü Pinot Noir grapes are difficult to grow but if grown well, these grapes can be made into one of the best wines in the world. It requires quite an effort to grow this grape. Pinot Noir, known as Spatburgunder in Germany, requires warm sunny days followed by cool evenings. Because of these peculiar condition requirements, Pinot Noir is not easily available. Pinot Noir may cost you more as the production is less. This grape is generally found in the Burgundy region of France, though Oregon and cooler regions of California have started growing the grape recently. It is light in color and the amount of tannin is less. It contains juicy fruits and tastes like strawberry, black cherry, spices, mint, etc. It has a velvety and seductive flavor. Pinot Noir has an alluring aroma, that is linked t and even. This wine is one of the three varieties (along with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier), used to make Champagne. Because of its seductive flavor, Pinot Noir is often associated with.

fçÜt{ Syrah or Shiraz are two names of the same variety. European vintners use the term Syrah whereas, Australians call it Shiraz. It is popular in Australia, California and France's Rhone Valley. This wine is less acidic, making it more drinkable. However, French Shiraz is quite acidic. It is deep red in color and exhibits flavors of spice and fruit. The wine is best served with meat and beef. Syrah has a good aroma.

m|ÇytÇwxÄ Zinfandel is found only in California and has been a cornerstone of the California viticulture scene for a long time. Our very own, Lodi Ca., is often deemed as the ‘Zin capital of the world’ . Zin is often considered as ladies wine, because of its subtle and light flavor. An interesting fact is that, it is found in both red and white varieties, but it's the red version which is more accepted by wine drinkers around the world. Zinfandel tastes of berries; raspberry, blackberry and cranberry, and are consumed young within 3 or 4 years. It has low to moderate acidity and a high alcohol content. Unlike other wines, Zinfandel blooms in heat and sunshine. These are best served with typical American fast foods like burgers, tomato sauce pastas and pizzas.

Here are some of the interesting things people have said about Pinot Noir. Joel Fleischman of Vanity Fair describes Pinot Noir as, "The most romantic of wines, with so voluptuous a perfume, so sweet an edge, and so powerful a punch that, like falling in love, they make the blood run hot and the soul wax embarrassingly poetic." Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon christened it, "Sex in a glass." Peter Richardsson of Oeno Style, says Pinot Noir is "A seductive yet fickle mistress!"

Grilled salmon, chicken and lamb are the best pairing for Pinot Noir.

Barbara’s Boutique

Although the downtown Lodi location is no longer open Barbara’s Boutique is still flourishing!

The owner of Barbara’s Boutique, Jennifer Pulido was born and raised in Columbia, South America and came to the U.S. to start a new chapter of her life. As a hard working entrepreneur she had dreams of owning her own clothing boutique. In May of 2013 her dream came to fruition with the opening of Barbara’s Boutique, named lovingly after her grandmother. Jennifer began her business with virtually no retail experience. Her previous job was with an accounting firm. Working long hours and struggling with the downward swing in the economy, along with extraordinary business and lease costs, Jennifer decided it was time to close her downtown Lodi shop location. 56

Since all of us here at the magazine have a passion for art and old things, we have decided to create an antique boutique of sorts for Style of Lodi & Stockton magazines.

Reclaimed & Restored

In our travels we often stop into junk shops as well as high end reclaimed furniture and antique shops to get ideas and purchase items to revive. And well of course garage sales are also a perfect place to shop for this stuff too. If you would like to roll up your sleeves and try it for yourself our Pinterest page is full of ideas to help you create your own treasures. So think twice before throwing out that 1970 TV stand or Grandmas old dresser. They can be useful in lots of different areas in your home or garden and a make great conversation piece as well as saving the environment. Our next issue will feature local artists and restoration specialists that are creating beautiful furniture and accessories for the home. 60

Classic Design Floor To Ceiling

Tiffany made a decision to start her own company and put herself in control of her future. So with the expertise she had learned from all of her years in this industry and the support of her dedicated staff that is precisely what she did. Today, Classic Design Floor to Ceiling is an award winning, stable company with Tiffany Gomes at the helm. Their trademarked motto

“Effortless Home Improvement”

What a pleasure it was to meet Tiffany Gomes of Classic Design Floor to Ceiling. She is an intelligent and dynamic woman and business professional. We were impressed by her dedication and drive for success and her achievement in becoming the President and CEO of Classic Design Floor to Ceiling. Tiffany started at this location in 1998 as a temporary receptionist for Walters Carpet. She worked her way up through several corporate buy-outs, including Shaw Carpet, Flooring America, Grand Floor Designs, and finally, Creative Touch Interiors (CTI), where she was Senior Operations Manager for three locations in California and Nevada. In 2006, when CTI opted to move its facilities, Tiffany decided to take control of her own destiny and stay at 2303 S. Stockton Street, opening Classic Design Floor to Ceiling. She now puts that wealth of experience into running a family and community-oriented business with many of the same employees she worked with throughout her ‘corporate years.’ With hallways lined with awards, including Best Local Employer two years-running, it appears she’s found her recipe for success.

The staff of top-notch, talented designers creates beautiful kitchen and bath remodels with top quality products. Tiffany says, “We offer better quality and pricing than the Big Box stores and we are able to assist our clients with all aspects of their projects, from Floor to Ceiling.”

Be sure to look them up for your next project!

If New to Studio

www.nowandzenlodi.com Deb’s focus is on the health of our physical bodies, she integrate bits of philosophy and breathing to help students understand the full benefits of yoga. She truly believes that yoga should be accessible to everyone and that is why our therapeutic and gentle classes, meet the needs of those whom “regular” classes are not appropriate. The healing aspects of yoga are so profound and she is so grateful to be able to share that with all her students . Deb says she is thankful for each day that she is able to practice and teach yoga. Also, she expresses how grateful she is for the wonderful staff and students that are a part of Now and Zen Yoga Studio. When Deb opened Now and Zen, she wanted everyone who walked through the door to feel welcome and appreciated. The teachers and students really help her in making that wish a reality. More than anything, she is grateful to her wonderful husband, Bill, who has supported her on my journey of yoga and of making Now and Zen a reality.

Deb Marweg , owner of Now and Zen Yoga Studio, began her journey in the early 1990’s with VHS tapes at home. She was a tri-athlete at the time and yoga provided the strength and flexibility she needed to keep her body balanced. Her love grew quickly after taking her first public class and she knew that yoga would be a part of her life forever. Being a teacher by profession, it only seemed natural that she had an innate desire to teach what she had come to love. As she finished her 200 hr teacher training she felt the calling to open a Yoga Studio with a desire to Make Yoga Accessible to Everyone, Not Just the Young and Fit. Deb has completed yoga therapy training with Svastha Yoga and holds an ERYT500 certificate with Yoga Alliance and she is a Certified Yoga School with Yoga Alliance.
