DESIGNER Junita Hayes (Pottery, popsicles and Deadly Ponies.)

Nothing like a cool new pair of shades and a rum cocktail all the way from Fiji to shape us up for summer! This November, it is so much more than the weather that is heating up, with party prep for the silly season in full swing. Weekly spray tans and a frenzy of topknots are transforming the office into a beauty salon, and instant slimming techniques in the form of a Champagne and canapé diet (as well as a little help from Nancy Ganz) are getting me party dress and dance floor ready!

the B105 round up

Summer is (almost) here..

BRISBANE IS ABUZZ WITH SOME OF THE COUNTRY’S BIGGEST EVENTS AND B105’S LABBY, STAV & ABBY HAVE THEIR FINGER ON THE PULSE WHEN IT COMES TO EVERYTHING HOT RIGHT NOW IN THE RIVER CITY.

Abby’s top tips for a sexy summer glow on the go. ABBY COLEMAN IS A PROFESSIONAL LIFE JUGGLER. BALANCING FAMILY, B105 BREAKFAST RADIO GIG AND TODAY SHOW WEATHER REPORTS. I’M IN LOVE with summer! To me everything is better when the sun is shining...well everything except my skin! So with the warm weather coming early this year, I’ve taken it upon myself to trial some beauty treatments to get summer skin ready. I headed to Endota Spa Fortitude Valley and let them tailor their treatments to suit my skin. I was prescribed an all-over organic salt and herb body scrub and honey exfoliation, HydroPeptides Facial followed by an organic spray tan. The body treatment started with a

Summer in the River Cit y with B105’s Labby ABBY JUGGLES A BUSY LIFE BUT KNOWS HOW TO STAY GLOWIN G.

billabong foot spa followed by the body scrub, all which was divine. I’m afraid to say I don’t remember the facial as I was so relaxed that I fell asleep but when I woke up my skin was instantly plump and smooth. I’ve now discovered footy plus peptides don’t mix but peptides plus skin has glowing results. All of this was topped off by an organic spray tan - the most natural one I’ve ever had. If you have a special event coming up and want to look your best then I highly recommend it.

Stav’s Daddy Diary STAV MUSES ABOUT A TRIP AWAY WITH RORI, CONFIRMING SUSPICIONS THAT BOTH GIRLS AND BABIES REQUIRE A LOT OF ACCESSORIES!

B105’S LABBY GIVES US HIS HOT SPOTS FOR SPENDING SUMMER IN THE RIVER CITY.

For the family: The spot to check out is Tangalooma on Moreton Island. It’s only a short ferry ride away and you’ll find crystal clear water to swim in, shipwrecks to snorkel through and great accommodation if you want to stay the night. It’s an overseas tropical island experience on our doorstep and, for a fraction of the price.

For the partner: Looking for a nice romantic spot for a summer lunch? Then visit the Cleveland Light House Restaurant. It has fantastic

fresh seafood right on the water. Plus if you want to go a little more casual or you’re tight with the cash, they have an adjoined café for takeaway fish and chips.

For mates: Now, for a classy summer drinking spot, I would suggest spending a Sunday arvo at Bacchus. Located at the Rydges Hotel in South Bank, it’s an upmarket poolside bar, perfect for cocktails and a perve - this is where you’ll find the pretty people hanging out. I need to iron my best shirt before I head there!

Dear Diary, 5am: Getting ready for a trip away with Rori. I want to get away early so better get packing. Let’s see, we’re going to need her port-a-cot, a stroller, her toys, a blanket, a bigger car… this may take a while. 6am: Okay, an hour in and I think we are half way packed. It’s a good thing I am good at Tetris… Now, if only I can get Kat and my stuff in the car, we will be good to go. For a tiny baby, she sure needs a lot of stuff! 7am: Okay all packed, but it took so long we need to have breakfast and feed/change Rori. Also, better check our packing to make sure we have everything…

Dummies – check; nappies – check; teething ring – check; pram – check. Two hours later... Change mat – check; baby wipes – check; story books – check... I am half way through… And done! Now a quick bit of lunch and we are on our way. Oh no, I’m going to need a bib… which is packed UNDER EVERYTHING! 2pm: Okay everyone’s fed, everything packed and we are off. Great to be on the road, and good to know that we have everything! Although I have a sneaking suspicion we have forgotten something…Oh my god, where’s Rori?!?!?! Turn around!

WHEN IT COMES to Queensland fashion, it's certainly no secret that we love to wear colour. Bright, bold and plenty of it, whether it's our fabulous weather or just our sunny dispositions, it's a signature style that we're known for - and I'm more than happy to embrace it! So for this month, I'm paying homage to my (adopted) home state with a flourish of colour, and a couple of Queensland designers in the mix. Hope you enjoy!

THE GIRLS FROM KYLIE RYAN AUSTRALIA SHARE WITH US THEIR STYLE GUIDELINES FOR THE LATEST LOOKS FOR A SOIREE-STUDDED QUEENSLAND SUMMER.

Race Wear Party Attire GET SEXY WITHOUT looking sleazy. It’s easier than you think! Choose unexpected touches, glam essentials and sensuous fabrics. Perfect tips for holiday parties, romantic evenings or any time you want to get in touch with your inner goddess.

Unspoken ‘Fez’ dress $399; Brazilio heel $329; Mollie Day ‘Dorothy Baby Blue” clutch $290; Mezi earrings $159

A BASIC OVERALL rule for dressing for the races is that although it is a day out with your friends, it’s important to remember it’s not an evening event so you shouldn’t dress like it is. Keep it a little bit conservative and formal and leave the miniskirts, crop tops and sequins for the nightclub!

Unspoken ‘Stargate’ dress $459; Carrano heel $259; Olga Berg clutch $189; Liberte ‘Carrie’ earrings $79.95; Joanne Holland Milliner ‘D’ Fascinator $180; Angie Mac necklace $49.95

Formal Attire LONG, MID-CALF, OR short formal gown? If there is any doubt about which is more appropriate for the occasion, a floor-length gown is a good choice. The evening gown may have a deep slit, except in more conservative venues. Wear heels and/or strappy sandals that enhance the outfit. A dramatic hairstyle and makeup are appropriate. Accessorise with large, sparkling fashion jewellery, or more understated real gemstones. Eileen Kirby ‘Adore & More’ dress $799; Red Carrano heel $259; Mollie Day ‘Watermelon’ clutch $320; Samantha Wills “A Long Walk” Earrings $175; Samantha Wills ‘Be My Girl’ Cuff $160

ENJOY A CONNECTED LIFESTYLE AT WEST END’S RIVERSIDE. NESTLED ALONGSIDE THE Brisbane River, Pradella’s Riverside West End precinct promises to deliver on lifestyle and connectivity. Ideally located less than three kilometres from the CBD, Riverside West End will be a truly connected community, providing access to the city and its neighbouring attractions via kilometres of cycling and walking paths, CityCats, CityCycle and 24-hour bus services. Designed by leading architects and landscape designers, Riverside West End will be focused on delivering a village atmosphere through its mixture of parkland apartments and retail shops,

set amongst leafy streets, laneways and parks adjacent to the Brisbane River. The stylish and cleverly designed parkland apartments will offer park, city or river views. The precinct itself will become a dynamic walkable community, offering residents a range of lifestyle conveniences. Riverside West End will also have Brisbane’s cultural playground on its doorstep, with the Queensland Performing Arts Complex, Convention Centre, State Library, Queensland Museum, Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery all within a short walk.

The lifestyle attractions don’t stop there, as West End and South Bank provide an array of multicultural restaurants and boutique retail outlets. On completion, 5.3 hectares of land will be turned into a vibrant residential and retail precinct, making the southern West End peninsula a key inner-city community. Riverside West End incorporates Pradella’s completed Waters Edge and Flow apartment developments with a further five stages in the pipeline to be delivered over the next five years. off season can be for the pretenders

U ARE TRAIN AS IF YO ENERGY, DESIRE PLAYING. WITH D SKILL. TO DO WELL AN

STYLE’S SPORTING SPECIALIST, CRICKETING LEGEND IAN HEALY TALKS OFF-SEASON FAKERY. OFF SEASON IS the time for feeling good and looking great however, too many players think that is automatically going to transfer into performance. Poor decisions made at training carry no consequences, unlike in competition. In cricket, a bad shot in the nets is forgettable and you have time to get it right, but not in a match. Especially if such decisions bring about your downfall, two games in a row. Confidence issues then come into play rapidly, which need to be dealt with and rectified - as you are also fixing the technical or mental problem that brought about that poor shot selection. Very quickly, in competition things are

different to how you thought this season was going to go - if you are a pretender. You used the last month poorly. Practice and training has to prepare you for all of the above. Train as if you are playing. With energy, skill and desire to do well. Put yourself mentally into possible match scenarios as you practice, then imagine what the consequences of poor performances are and prepare plans to get back on top or stay in front of them as the season wears on. Then you’re the real deal who has prepared for everything. You fail more in sport than you succeed, so you need to minimise the hurt with great preparation and readiness to cope and recover. Good luck!

gallivanting on the green THE STYLE TEAM SIDLES UP TO VICTORIA PARK TO GET THE AFTER-DARK LOWDOWN. VICTORIA PARK IS more than just a golf course; it’s an amazing destination to have fun, unwind and enjoy a slew of fantastic offerings. Start with a friendly (or not so friendly, depending on your competitive edge) game of putt putt while you take in fantastic views in an adventure-fuelled venue that can see you through the night. The putt putt course is not your ordinary course; it’s one of Brisbane’s best kept entertainment secrets. Weaving around rocky terrain with sneaky water traps and perilous obstacles (particularly when it comes to damaging your putting ego), the course is the perfect date night activity, competitive

adventure among friends or venue for the whole family to enjoy. After a fun game of putt putt, a great way to finish off your game is to grab a bite to eat and drink up at the Bar & Bistro where you can enjoy a fresh seasonal menu, stunning city views and entertaining atmosphere. (Plus there’s live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night!) For the fun-seeker looking to enjoy Victoria Park’s golf facilities, they can hit golf balls on the driving range, have a game on the 18 hole USGA rated golf course, check out or purchase the latest golf and leisure merchandise, apparel and equipment in the retail store or

have a group or private lesson with one of 10 PGA, ALPG and US LPGA professional golf instructors in their Learning Centre. That’s a lot of fun-filled golfing activities in one place! For the ultimate gift leading up to Christmas, Victoria Park has gift cards available both in store and online. It’s more than a present; it’s the gift of enjoyment and excitement! And believe us, when you are as competitive as we are, it really is a gift that keeps on giving. We had a ball at Victoria Park and I’m sure you will, too. CHOOSE CAREFULLY WITH WHOM YOU DRINK; THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF SAFETY.

cheers! CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST DR JOHN BARLETTA EXPLORES SAFER USE OF ALCOHOL. HAVE A DRINK, said in this culture, does not mean just any drink, it means to have alcohol. If you are one of the 90% of people who have consumed alcohol, read on. While alcohol in moderation usually presents low health risk, for some people their use spirals out of control. Prolonged use leads to tolerance, which means you drink more to achieve the same impact. Perhaps you used to drink socially, but more of your daily activity is becoming alcoholfocused. If this is you, know that you are not the only person who turns to alcohol when times get tough, or because drinking helps you connect, or to feel better or to sleep. To minimise the harm associated with alcohol use here are a few tips. Plan your use; less use means less harm to your health, work, and relationships. Drinking only on the weekends gives your body and brain a chance to recover. Put aside how much you are going to drink and use only that.

Choose carefully with whom you drink; this is the most important aspect of safety. It’s important you trust the people you are with and where you will be. Eat before and while you drink and stay hydrated; extra demands are put on your body when you drink. The research about how much alcohol harms or promotes good health continues, and it depends on age, gender, weight, metabolism, and wellbeing. However, it’s probably best to consume no more than a couple of standard drinks a day, and have a number of alcohol free days each week. It is important to seek professional help if concerned about any aspect of alcohol use that is chronic or out of control. Cheers to sensible drinking!

Laura Price is t he ultimate juggler!

GIVEN HER ATTITUDE for multitasking (three young kids and two business ventures), Style wanted to find out what advice Laura Price, Creative Director of The Gloss Bar (the ultimate juggler) could pass on to other mums.

they need to multitask all day every day, but sometimes this can be more of a hindrance than a help. I try to focus my attention on one task at a time to surely accomplish my to-do list.

LAURA’S F IVE T IP S T O FEEL FAB AS A MUM ON THE GO:

1. Pop on some lipstick

– Don’t listen to what everyone else tells you, always stay true to yourself. You know what is best for your family so make sure you stand up for yourself and do what you feel is right.

2. Be organised

– Always give yourself some me time. Whether it’s daily, weekly or monthly you should always give yourself some space to relax and find your inner serenity. You are no good to anyone if you are run down and stressed.

– All you need is a good lipstick or gloss to take you from looking drab to fab! Most days putting on a face of make-up is my last priority so I just pop on my lippy and instantly feel more confident and ready to face the world. – I like to prepare for my day the night before so I can wake up and feel like I can accomplish the day. I plan for time with my kids and my husband so I can make sure I have some time to myself. This helps me to balance my time and feel less frantic by the end of the day.

kitchen couture BRISBANE’S SUPERSTAR KITCHEN DESIGNER, KIM DUFFIN GIVES US THE INSIDE WORD ABOUT HOW YOUR SPACE CAN LOOK LIKE A VOGUE COVER WITH A LIFESTYLE TWIST.

SOME SAY GOOD design is about wow factor but ensuring a kitchen is practical as well as aesthetically appealing is one of the greatest challenges a designer faces when commencing a project. So whether you are renovating, extending or building your home from scratch, the old saying ‘form follows function’ rings true every time. Here are some of Kim’s key tips to consider when designing a new kitchen: Understand how you use or want to use the space – do you want the children to do their homework in the kitchen while you are preparing the evening meal? Are you looking to improve the flow between other adjoining living and outdoor spaces? This information will determine the shape, size and overall feel of the new kitchen. Think about lighting – day or night, summer or winter the light in your space changes. Once you www.stylemagazines.com.au

1113_BM_ p27.indd 27

understand this it will be easier to select finishes, colours and textures to use in the kitchen. Blue is the new black – don’t be drawn into the latest pop colour or texture. These will create the telltale signs of age (no woman likes to divulge this!). Use trends to accent the space rather than dominate it such as using canisters, crockery, etc. Some features will luckily always be on trend like natural stone, a classic Florence Broadhurst pattern or a glass feature.

Use trends to accent the space rather than dominate it ... some features will luckily always be on trend like natural stone, a classic Florence Broadhurst pattern or a glass feature. Kim’s mounting accolades (79 in just seven years) further cement his status as a pioneering, industry leading designer and interiors architect. The consistency with which Kim garners recognition is a testament to his work ethic and commitment to follow through with a project from start to completion. Favourite Telstra gadget? The Toshiba Portege - It’s a tablet and laptop in one. What do you use it for? I work between two offices so it allows me to just pick it up and put it in my handbag! It’s small and compact for travel but solid enough to be my every day work laptop. The fact that the keyboard simply clicks off and it becomes a tablet means I can sit with people and display information without having to print things out. Must-have app of the moment? Runkeeper is my fave at the moment – It works like a GPS and tells your time and distance so you can keep improving. I’ve been inspired by some crazy people so have hopped on the running 30

bandwagon. Although it would be more of a shuffle at the moment! Where can we find you on the weekend? At the gym or down the beach with my puppy. Favourite downtime activity? Shopping. ... a girl I love shopping....... can never have enough shoes. Favourite local spot? The Spit on the Gold Coast. There is nothing more relaxing than the beach! NOVEMBER13

Favourite Telstra gadget? The Telstra ‘DAVE’ smart phone. What do you use it for? I really like the ‘DAVE’ handset as it allows me to combine work and play. It has all the normal apps and work functions like emails and reminders but it is also tough, shock resistant and waterproof. We recently took ‘DAVE’ kayaking in Byron Bay and took snap shots of the whales! Must-have app of the moment? The Jawbone UP! is my favourite app at the moment. My Jawbone is an activity tracker I wear on my wrist. I simply plug it into my phone and it syncs all the activity from that day. It tracks how well I slept last night, how far I have walked that day and how many calories I have burnt. Where can we find you on the weekend? Generally I love to be active and outside, so the weekend tends to be a combination of training (long runs, yoga, gym) and more spontaneous activities like kayaking, exploring or going to the beach. That way I can enjoy all that extra food and drinks I consume socialising! Favourite downtime activity? Spending time relaxing with my partner, friends and family and trying out new yummy food! Favourite local spot? The Willow & Spoon at Alderley or The Flying Nun at Samford.

Favourite Telstra gadget? Mini Jambox. What do you use it for? It has a built-in omnidirectional microphone with echo cancellation for use as a wireless speakerphone, giving crystalclear speakerphone calls: very handy in my role! I also like to play music in the call centre and it’s great for weekends at the beach and outdoor entertaining at home. Must-have app of the moment? Google Drive! It allows me to upload and share photos, files and documents, which is great for joint projects at work and for friends and family across the globe. It is easy to navigate and allows you to edit files simply. Where can we find you on the weekend? Anywhere and everywhere! I love the West End Market; it has originality and a funky atmosphere. Favourite downtime activity? I’m a water baby, anything involving swimming, snorkelling and spas. If I have had a busy week I try to treat myself and unwind with a facial and a massage. Favourite local spot? Moreton Island. It feels like you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD.

Favourite Telstra gadget? 4G Wi-Fi Broadband device. What do you use it for? I like the 4G Wi-Fi device because it means I can connect multiple devices to the internet regardless of where I am. I recently went to Hamilton Island and had internet access while lying on the beach. I was able to upload my pictures within seconds! Must-have app of the moment? Snapchat! I have to say I like sending and receiving snaps through this app, they can be hilarious! Where can we find you on the weekend? Getting away for a holiday as often as possible. There’s nothing better than kicking your feet up without a care in the world. Favourite downtime activity? Gaming. I love to disappear for hours on end by jumping online and slaying zombies with my mates from all over the world. Favourite local spot? Nothing beats having a BBQ, cold beer and a swim at Cedar Creek Falls. It’s a hidden paradise!

DESIGNED BY BRISBANE’S Cottee Parker Architects, Proximity Hamilton is located just six kilometres from the CBD at the Portside Wharf precinct and comprises 127 one and two-bedroom apartments – most of which have water views. The spacious, modern apartments are now selling off the plan and start from just $330,000 for a onebedroom 60sqm apartment, $495,000 for an 85sqm two-bedroom apartment and up to $655,000 for a twobedroom, two-bathroom 104sqm apartment complete with a vista of the city skyline and Brisbane River. The complex will house a stunning podium-level pool and sundeck and two elevators and offers direct access to the many covetable lifestyle offerings of Portside, including fine dining, a huge range of retailers, gyms, cinemas and more. But the appeal doesn’t end there. Cottee Parker Architects director Sandra Browne says that the building will take on an innovative design aesthetic inspired by its natural surroundings, with woven-effect balconies and

striking vertical aluminium battens delivering an everchanging façade. “The battens are inspired by skeletal hulls of boats and as the ribs of a boat change along its length, so too do these vertical battens change and warp along the length of the building,” she says. Each apartment will be available in a choice of two colour schemes with an emphasis on light timber finishes inspired by Japanese and Scandanavian design, and will feature impressive floor to ceiling windows, air conditioning, reconstituted stone benchtops, European appliances, built-in wardrobes and quality finishes. The display suite is open seven days from 10am to 4pm. PROXIMITY HAMILTON 7 HERCULES ST, HAMILTON P 1300 887 113 PROXIMITYHAMILTON.COM.AU

It is easier to get to them even if they turned on. 3. Always add the largest ornaments first and finish with the smallest ornaments. 4. Once you’re finished, stand back and have one last look to make sure the elements are all balanced. 5. Add the presents under your tree and enjoy your Christmas. fun and fanciful GOLD COAST GIRL CHRISTIE SHARPE HAS RELEASED A BRAND NEW APP SET TO TAKE THE DATING WORLD BY STORM.

‘FANCIED’ – LAUNCHED in August – already boasts thousands of mutual ‘fancies’ nationally, and has been nominated as a Top 10 finalist for Startup of the Year. We got the goss from Christie about this exciting new dating app. What inspired you to create such an app? I observed a friend at a party who was too shy to walk up to a guy she fancied for fear of him not fancying her back. I realised this was common and most people don’t always have the courage to walk up and start a conversation with complete strangers. I wanted to come up with a solution that brought the online and offline world together. WITH ONLY SIX weeks until the arrival of the big man himself, Christmas is arguably the most exciting time of year to put your inner stylist to the test! Whether you’re planning your work Christmas Party or a family get-together, put together a festive look that will be the envy of your guests! Christmas can be presented in so many different ways; it doesn’t have to be simply mistletoe, Christmas trees and blow up Santa Clauses! Start the planning with the table linen as this creates the greatest impact across the room. Linen is also an easy way to incorporate your chosen patterns, prints and colours. For centerpieces, be sure to check out Moreton Hire’s accessories range for inspiration. Adding in some simple cushions to your furniture can help turn on the festive spirit! If you are looking for something tailored for you, or just simply feel overwhelmed by the season, don’t be afraid to call in the professionals!

ACCORDING TO EXPERTS, most of the changes seen in ageing skin are caused by a lifetime of sun damage. With the beautiful spring weather upon us, ensure you protect yourself from the sun to maintain and improve the health of your skin. Early preventative treatments are recommended to help increase your skin’s natural defence cells, which assists resilience and faster recovery from sun exposure. It is best to be well advised on the short and long term effects of various clinic treatments; this will ensure that you are seeking procedures that lower the risk of inflammation, premature ageing and assist in the health of your skin. In conjunction with sun smart actions such as avoiding the sun during high intensity hours, wearing protective clothing and using a high quality broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF higher than 15), you are primed and covered for the summer months!

ARE YOU A LinkedIn member? Many professionals are still not putting themselves on the social media platform, as they don’t think they need it. Think again! With over 200 million members the site is now entrenched in the professional world as the first place to research business contacts. Whether you are looking to move careers or not, having a current, and more importantly complete, LinkedIn profile is critical to establishing your personal brand. Why do you need a ‘personal brand’? Whether you are a business owner or an employee we are all looking to enhance our careers. By having a profile that is a good reflection of who you are and where your interests lie, you have already done the hard yards in positioning yourself when contacts are looking for someone to deal with. By not having a profile, complete with a sensible photo, you risk becoming invisible in this increasingly digital business world and that’s not a good look for anyone!

UPDATES FROM EXPERTS IN THE FIELD

THE PROPERTY REPORT

VARICOSE VEINS

HEALTH & WELLBEING

with John McGrath

with Dr Nicholas Kemp

the value of a good floor plan

hidden varicose veins?

mums: back and neck pain

THE WAY WE use our homes has changed dramatically over the past decade and this has impacted the design of new dwellings as well as the re-configurations of existing ones. The rising importance of the home office is a prime example. Previously we saw the smallest bedroom in the house transformed to a study but nowadays we’re seeing more properties with designated purpose-built home offices. An extra bedroom is more valuable than a study because people like to choose how to use it. Another change in the use of homes is the increasing desire for separation between parents and children. This isn’t because families don’t like hanging out together, it’s because many young people are staying home well into their 20s and it’s nice to have separate living areas. The term ‘teen retreat’ is seen more and more in real estate copywriting today because many more buyers are looking for it. The most successful floor plans are those that flow easily.

MANY PEOPLE SUFFERING from varicose veins know that they have them because blue ropey veins can be seen bulging through the skin on their legs. Others may report a discomfort or feeling of heaviness that alerted them to the fact that they could have venous disease. Obesity can mask the symptoms of the failing valves because the swollen veins are often hidden. Aching in the leg might be attributed by patients to the extra weight they are carrying rather than hidden varicose veins. Many of my patients carrying excess weight are only alerted to the fact that they might have varicose veins once skin damage starts to occur. Varicose veins left untreated can lead to leg ulceration. With overweight patients it can also be more of a challenge to assess and treat the problem because the veins can be deeper within the leg making it harder to map and properly access and identify the diseased veins.

IF YOU’RE A new mum, you’d be realising that holding bub and breastfeeding has started to generate some upper back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain. You’re also probably waking in the middle of the night and reaching down to console and pick up bub. If you’re really unlucky, you might also be able to feel headaches coming on. I could go on all day about onset of pain from looking after your beautiful babies. But what about you, mum: how do you manage this? According to a recent study, a mum can lift the equivalent of nearly one tonne every day when caring for her baby, factoring in the times a baby needs to be picked up and put down. Massage and specialist therapies relieve those sore spots, relax tense muscles, improve blood circulation, increase joint mobility, and rejuvenate. Hawthorne Wellness Centre has specialists in this area; if you have any questions about easing back and neck pain, come in for a chat with myself or Bonnie.

KITCHENS REMAIN ARGUABLY the most important spaces in a family home. Today, the kitchen has claimed the major role of the house and is required to meet a range of needs. Apart from requiring functionality, it must also have aesthetic appeal. In custom designed and built homes, this is the area in which clients focus their attention and budget. Here are some points to remember before building your new kitchen: • Design is at the centre of any quality project. A recognised kitchen designer will consider all the important aspects of ‘YOUR’ kitchen and will be up to date with the latest innovations. • It’s highly recommended that a working budget is determined before commencing the design – be realistic. • Your input throughout this phase is crucial. The more information you provide about what you want, the better – be specific. For instance, is the main cook left or right handed? • Take time to plan it, and build it right. Enjoy your new custom built space.

WITH THE WARMER months comes a need to bare a little more skin, and we all want a nice natural sun-kissed glow. Now we all know the dangers of sunbathing and it really is the season’s faux pas as sun damage causes our skin to age faster. The answer, an organic spray tan! You can walk in and out in 10 minutes and have the most radiant, natural looking full body tan. Spray tans do need a little prep work though to give the best result. Exfoliate – a scrub and glow mitt is great for this. Hydrate – ensure that you are moisturising diligently morning and evening before your appointment. On the day of your spray tan do not apply a moisturiser or deodorant. The depth of the colour can be enhanced by sleeping in your tan. Aftercare – moisturising daily will help your tan last longer. Endota Fortitude Valley has its very own organic spray tan to give you a great summer glow in minutes.

WHEN YOU THINK of organising an elaborate event, you usually start to see the dollar signs piling up, (not to mention the amount of time and stress involved). Here are a few tips that can help transform your event into one that leaves guests with a lasting impression but doesn’t leave you over budget! Create a new spin on the classics. Instead of an annual fundraising gala, why not create a family fun day where profits from things like a jumping castle or magic show are donated to charity? Style your catering. If there’s a way to make it even more appetising, appealing or fun, do it! Create the right atmosphere with styling. Take advantage of an in house event stylist who can source affordable products, possibly ones you may not even know existed! Find a function space that says ‘wow’. The features of a room can be responsible for that ‘wow’ factor so it’s important to consider the impact that it will have on your event.

celtic connection LUCY STEPHENS CHATS TO CELTIC WOMAN SONGBIRD (AND SISTER OF AUSTRALIAN ADOPTEE BRIAN), SUSAN MCFADDEN ON THE SUCCESSFUL ALL-GIRL GROUP’S UPCOMING TOUR.

What can audiences expect from your Celtic Woman tour Down Under? It’s a mix of the traditional and the new... We’ve brought back some of the original fan favourites as well as songs from the album Believe. Visually we have a stunning set and lighting design and beautiful dresses by famous Irish designer Synan O‘Mahony. We will also be joined on stage by a choir, live band, bag piper and an Irish dancer! You’re the newest member of the group - how have the other girls embraced you? The girls have been amazing; there are around 40 to 50 people on the road at any one time so we’re like a big travelling

family. It was very daunting coming into a group that has been incredibly successful for the past eight years, but everyone was so supportive that it felt like I’d been there for years. I won’t be the new girl for long as Mairead Carlin is joining us and we’re so excited to have her with us. How do you find performing in the group compared to musicals? At first I found it quite terrifying as I was used to being on stage as a character. Celtic Woman was one of the first times I had to perform on stage as myself! But I’ve got used to it now and I love it. What are you looking forward to most about your Australian tour?

I’m really looking forward to getting to spend a bit more time in Australia, the last I was there was a very brief visit and we must have driven past the Sydney Opera House 10 times but never had the time to actually get out and look properly! If you weren’t a singer, you’d be….? A chef! When you’re on the road you tend to eat out a lot, so when I have time off, one of my favourite things to do is cook! What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Be nice to everyone you meet, especially on the way up cause you will need them on the way down. WWW.TICKETEK.COM.AU

CHART-TOPPING SENSATION, TIMOMATIC TREATED GUESTS TO A SHOW STOPPING PERFORMANCE.

hair apparent THIS YEAR, THE 2013 STEFAN AWARDS NIGHT WAS NOTHING SHORT OF SPECTACULAR. THEMED AROUND THE glamour of the 1920s Great Gatsby; the 2013 Stefan Awards Night ballroom was decorated accordingly and looked incredible. Thanks to the amazing Stefan sponsors – Kerastase, Moroccanoil and L’Oreal - there was non-stop action in the Great Hall of the Brisbane Convention Centre; including the Kerastase VIP lounge, the Stefan Styling Glow Bar and L’Oreal Cocktail Bars. Stilt walkers, flame throwers and aerialists pouring Champagne from the ceiling made it a night of unlimited extravagance. DJ Didier Cohen, who has just finished judging Australia’s Top Model, opened and ended the night with a range of dance hits and had every invitee taking off their high heels and suit jackets to boogie the night away. Guests were also treated to a show-stopping performance by Australia’s Got Talent judge and chart-topping

sensation, Timomatic. But the focus of the night was the creative hair catwalk where the Stefan stylists created sensational hair styles on the Tamblyn models – who were dressed by Brisbane Designers - Ultra Suite and when Harry Met Lilly. The finale of the night was when Stefan and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk presented Stefan’s top 100 students with their star trophies. The winners of these are all joining Stefan at the Offshore Conference and Study Tour in Hong Kong in 2014. Dancing until their feet hurt, the Stefan staff and VIP guests celebrated the achievements of another amazing year. Check out the incredible photos!

Purchase your very own copy and have it autographed on the day.

HOT ON THE heels of her last publication, former Vogue Australia Editor-in-Chief Kirstie Clements is back with a salacious new title which is sure to set tongues wagging. Titled Tongue in Chic, Kirstie’s latest book will dish the dirt on fashion magazines (it’s fabulous, daaaaarling!), with an eye-opening account of the day-to-day life of working at the fictitious “Chic” magazine. For those that loved her first book, “The Vogue Factor” this is a must-read! “It’s a sequel to The Vogue Factor, but this time the names have been changed so I can tell some more insider stories,” she says. “While I was at Vogue, so many crazy things would happen I would

often think, ‘I should write a book!’. Once I left, I thought it was a good opportunity to reveal some truths.” Stokehouse Restaurant at River Quay will play host for the Brisbane launch of Kirstie’s book at 12pm, Tuesday November 12. For $95, guests can join Kirstie, and MC Robin Bailey, for lunch, wines, dessert and a glass of sparkling on arrival. fashion vs. art BRISBANE ART CURATOR AND MUM-OFTHREE, ALISON KUBLER, HAS JUST BECOME AN INTERNATIONALLY PUBLISHED AUTHOR. SHE SPOKE TO KELLIE ALDERMAN ABOUT STYLE, ART AND HAVING IT ALL.

WITH HER TRADEMARK mane of platinum hair, a swoosh of matte orange lipstick and her enviable wardrobe full of vintage designer names, Alison Kubler cuts a stylish figure at art and fashion events around Australia. As co-author of new book, Art/ Fashion in the 21st Century, Alison spent more than two years putting together the hardback tome, with friend and collaborator, Sydney journalist Mitchel Oakley Smith. “I had been looking at collaborations between artists and fashion houses for about a decade, it started with a show at the Trussardi Museum in Milan that really struck a chord with me - they photographed a famous football team kicking around soccer balls all dressed in Trussardi suits, it really fascinated me,” she said. “I met Mitchel in 2009 when Michael (her husband, acclaimed artist Michael Zavros) won the GQ Artist of the Year Award. Mitchel had just released a book on Australian fashion, we got on really well and I told him I’d always wanted to write a book about art and fashion and he

loved the idea.” “There really wasn’t any books out there documenting art and fashion collaborations since the turn of the century - there has been so many and it has changed the face of fashion.” Two-and-a-half years later and the book has just been released in Australia, Europe and the US, with a second book in the works. While art is her first love, fashion has always been a close second. “My grandmother and mother were both really stylish women who instilled in me a real sense of dressing well as a sign of respect for the people you would be spending time with,” she said. And what does she hope to pass on to her own brood when it comes to matters of style? “Have fun with it and don’t follow the rules. This generation of children coming through has such a different approach to fashion, everything is up for grabs, all the genres can be mixed and they really enjoy it.” ART/FASHION IN THE 21ST CENTURY IS AVAILABLE NOW FROM THAMES & HUDSON.

WHEN IT COMES to prime-time Brissy dining spots, there’s little that can beat a good meal and a glass of wine in a casual atmosphere against the backdrop of the lively Brisbane River. Unless you’ve also got the CBD’s only beach in the forefront, just as South Bank Surf Club has. By day, the view is a pulsing hub of bodies on sand and in the water, but by night, the view is spectacularly poignant: South Bank Surf Club cuts a fine figure against the glistening beach, rippling river and twinkling skyline. And once you take your eyes of the view, you’ll discover the menu’s offerings are on par. The summer menu centres mainly on seafood, offering an upmarket twist on traditional surf club fare. After something light to share? You’ll find fresh Gold Coast prawns by the half kilo, natural oysters and various share platters. For those that love a little crust with their crustaceans, go the oysters Rockefeller topped with a light cheesy spinach sauce and bread crumbs. Despite

70

being very tempted by the sticky house-glazed BBQ beef ribs, I wasn’t able to go past the Thai marinated Moreton Bay Bug. Chargrilled and served with a tasty combination of mango, salad and a nuoc cham dressing, it’s sure to garner some serious food envy from those around you. Dessert wise, it was an easy choice with the traditional crème brulee – and it didn’t disappoint. You’ll find a cleverly curated wine and beer list as well, with some more boutique and unusual imported beverages making an appearance. CAMPOS COFFEE DIRECTOR JOHN RONCHI SHARES SOME EXCITING NEWS ABOUT THEIR PRIZED NEW BREW.

COFFEE AFICIONADOS ARE being invited to sample Australia’s most expensive and prized coffee bean – the Ironman Geisha – now available exclusively through Campos Coffee. Ironman Geisha recently took out first prize at the 17th annual Best of Panama Auction with a score of 91.7 out of 100 and was purchased by Campos Coffee for $400 per kilogram at auction in June, outbidding many competitive global coffee suppliers. The Geisha Varietal, made famous by the Esmeralda farm and its Geisha tree in Panama produces a specific, unique flavour that set the specialty coffee world ablaze and caused their prices to begin a price spike like never seen before. We know Australians are truly passionate

promotion

about their coffee so we wanted to deliver something that really raises the bar. We want to expand horizons with this one. The taste is remarkably unique and it really is out of this world, and the price tag reflects this. We believe this is a rare opportunity to try something truly special and we’re really looking forward to sharing Ironman Geisha with likeminded coffee drinkers across the country. Having recently arrived in Australia, Ironman Geisha is available for purchase online from our website or instore. The beans are priced at $100 per 150g jar, giving it the title of Australia’s most expensive coffee. WWW.CAMPOSCOFFEE.COM.AU

irresistible,” Jacki says. Every Friday and Saturday night, the containers will play host to an array of providores selling everything from fresh flowers to gelato, seafood, health food, woodfired pizzas, cocktails, arts and craft and more. re “Buying from our markets will mean you’re supporting local farmers, as well as eating freshly picked fruit and vegetables that are full of flavour. Our farmers will bring to Eat Street the likes of Granite Belt apricots, strawberries, apples and cherries just picked and packed hours earlier.” “Markets, I believe will become a part of Brisbane like our mango trees and Moreton Bay Figs,” she says.

OPENING NOVEMBER 8, the bustling vibe and aromatic flavours of South-East Asian night markets will be brought to life in Brisbane with Eat Street Markets. Angel a H irst is givi ng start up fo od busi nesses a he lping hand.

DESPITE TRAINING AS an architect, flirting with philosophy and a completing a PHD in food ethics, Angela Hirst found her hunger for food and the hospitality industry wasn’t satiated. She left Australia, becoming a chef and working in Michelin-starred Petersham’s Nurseries Café in the UK, and The Rose Bakery in Paris before returning to Brisbane. “In 2011, I had a three-month old, a growing food blog, and a drive to start my own food business. I began teaching cooking and indulging my passion for preserving, but I just couldn’t figure out how to make an income from either, ” she says. “Schlepping my stuff in and out of other people’s kitchens took as long as the cooking classes I was running, and they would cost me

more than I’d make! I realised I knew very little about how to run a business and that not having access to a licenced commercial kitchen was just one of the many missing resources for new food businesses.” So, Wandering Cooks was born, a multi-kitchen community giving start up food businesses a helping hand. Based in a warehouse in West End, the hub offers access to commercially licensed kitchens, preparation spaces, cookbooks, and storage spaces. And as for the future, this wandering cook has set anchor. “I hope to be here, making preserves, with a glorious garden, and growing an ever more diverse set of offerings at Wandering Cooks tailored to Brisbane’s food entrepreneurs.” WWW.WANDERINGCOOKS.COM.AU

That melt-in-your-mouth texture extends to both the rump and the boned chargrilled chicken – absolutely delicious with juiciness that you can only dream about. And then dessert…my favourite part of the evening! My partner and I had a fiery spoon fight over the crème brulee (to die for) and polished off a delightfully presented lavender panna cotta with berry compote and toasted marshmellow. Our Bravo Bar.b.que experience took place on a Wednesday night and I was floored by the delicious spread at our disposal. Bravo Bar.b.que has an ambience that makes you feel like you could have a large gathering or an intimate dinner and be completely comfortable with either option. We indulged in seared local calamari with limed spinach and sticky beef short ribs with cherry tomatoes, red onion, green papaya, and mint salad for entrée and I must say, I’m not a rib person, but with the melt-in-your-mouth meat that

The range has everything you need to tan from a back applicator ($20), express two-hour mousse ($35), applicator mitt ($10) and even a cute lace-trimmed tan removing glove ($25). This gave me a faultless tan that lasted for over a week, my new fave! Lovingtan.com

Self-tanning your face can be risky unless you pick the right product. My go-to is Ella Bache’s Great Facetan Without Sun, $38. It always delivers an even glow that makes you look relaxed rather than overly tanned, it’s packed with moisturizers and has a built-in bronzer so you never get streaks or patches. Ellabache.com.au.

Build Me Up Buttercup If you prefer your tan to appear naturally over time, try St Tropez Everyday Body, $33.95. St Tropez’s reputation for the most natural-looking tan on the market is unsurpassed and this buildable tan is perfect for just a hint of color. Use it as your daily body moisturiser (there’s no telltale smell) and your skin will stay perma-tinted all summer. David Jones, Priceline.

Tina Hammond (centre) and the Embellish You team.

IMAGINE CUTTING YOUR daily beauty routine in half, or having lusciously lined lips, a perfect pair of brows and eyeliner that won’t leave you with panda eyes? Award-winning cosmetic tattooist, Tina Hammond from Embellish You knows the secret to eternal perfection. Tina has more than 25 years experience as a hair and beauty professional and worked in the body art industry before completing advanced international training in cosmetic tattoo and paramedical needling. Dedicated to ongoing yearly advanced training, she has three times been Awarded Australian Cosmetic Tattooist Of The Year by the Association Of Cosmetic Tattoo. Suitable for men and women, permanent cosmetics can be used by those who suffer hair loss, have sensitivities to cosmetics, have trouble applying makeup, and for covering up scar tissue. As we age, our lashes and brows start to

thin naturally. Tattooing will create the appearance of fuller brows, and means you can go swimming or to the gym and not worry that your brows will wash off. Recently relocating to Grange, you’ll discover a lot more to Embellish You Medi Spa than permanent makeup. Their expert stylists offer a complete range of hair dressing options, as well a variety of beauty and cosmetic treatments including tattoo removal, anti-aging solutions, pigmentation and spider-vein removal, facials, peels and microdermabrasion, acne management, non-surgical fat reduction and IPL hair removal. Dr Walid Al-Bermani will continue to offer anti-wrinkle injectables and fillers, and a brow bar and hair loss clinic will open within the spa soon. busting beauty myths ENDOTA SPA GIVES TESS BRINUMS THE INSIDE WORD ON BEAUTY MYTHS, FICTION, AND FAUX PAS. HEADING INTO SUMMER, I had a few beauty questions that had long gone unanswered. Wanting to be armed with the best beauty advice, I turned to Rebecca at Endota Spa in James St to help me wade through the facts and the fallacies. My first port of call? Finding out the biggest summer faux pas. Sunbathing, Rebecca says, is the biggest faux pas that springs to mind. Why repeatedly expose your skin to harsh UV rays when an organic spray tan looks amazing and preserves your skin’s natural beauty? My next question: what is the key to blemish-free 86

HEAD TO WWW.FACEBOOK. COM/ENDOTASPA. FORTITUDEVALLEY skin? “People with blemishes make the mistake of trying to strip their skin of oil,” Rebecca says. “This actually has the reverse effect, causing overproduction of oil flow. People need to ‘make friends’ with their oil. This will ultimately allow the oil to balance out, reducing breakouts and slowing down the signs of ageing.” I then asked Rebecca if people with oily skin should avoid using moisturisers. No, she said, the skin needs both water and oil, meaning we need to balance oil and increase hydration levels. The more hydrated the skin is, the less likely it is to

overproduce oil. Therefore it is important to be using a moisturiser, especially with SPF during the day. Rebecca also informed me that injectables are the only truly effective way to rid your skin of wrinkles. However, while many of us obviously want to slow down the effects of aging, she also reminded me that lines and wrinkles tell a story. Laughter lines remind us of fond memories and ageing gracefully is a sought-after alternative. This is where cosmeceuticals make a difference; their advanced skin care abilities assist in slowing down the signs of ageing. “The active ingredients in our cosmeceuticals are of a pharmaceutical grade in a cosmetic formula, allowing us to make changes in skin and help turn back the clock by stimulating collagen and elastic production, which in turn decreases the depth of lines and wrinkles.” Cosmeceuticals also assist with common skin conditions such as pigmentation, dull complexion, sensitivity, acne and hydration, something I wasn’t aware of before chatting to Rebecca. If you’re like me and unsure of the best beauty treatment or tips, consult the experts at Endota Spa. ENDOTA SPA FORTITUDE VALLEY 3/27 JAMES ST, THE VALLEY P 3252 0712 WWW.ENDOTADAYSPA.COM.AU

anti-wrinkle converted WE CHAT TO TWO OF BRISBANE ANTI-WRINKLE STUDIO’S CONVERTED CLIENTS. FIONA NEVILLE AND Rodd Taylor were not fans of cosmetic treatments. With a two year old and long work hours, neither of them had considered that injectables would suit their lifestyle or fit into their schedules. And Rodd, who Fiona describes fondly as a real ‘blokey bloke’ was certainly not in favour of giving treatment a try. But it was this busy lifestyle that prompted Fiona to get in touch with Brisbane Anti-Wrinkle Studio. She felt that both she and Rodd could do with a pick-me-up. With an open mind they approached Brisbane Anti-Wrinkle Studio, where they were greeted by a friendly, approachable team that considered their needs from the start and tailored a treatment plan. Fiona and Rodd were consulted as to their

treatment possibilities and shown before and after photos, which helped them make an informed decision on the best treatment options available. The procedure itself was a quick walk-in-walk-out effort with minimal down time and Fiona and Rodd say that they are now fully converted. The result: a new positive outlook, reinforced by many compliments, and even a boost in confidence. Fiona is constantly questioned by her friends about how she could look so fresh and vital even with a two year old in tow. With her fabulous new look and beautiful glowing skin, Fiona says she couldn’t have hoped for better results and that the skills and guidance from Dr Richard Hogden and Cosmetic Nurse, Tracey King were invaluable. Favourite treatment: My favourite treatment here is Microdermabrasion. We now have the Flower Peel Microdermabrasion that utilises different types of flower grains to suit individual skin, combined with a second peel infusion with the diamond-head to rehydrate the skin. Amazing results!

Favourite treatment: Radiance C Facial. Great for those wanting a radiant glowing skin, improve texture and evens out skin colour. BEAUTY TIP:

Our skin changes due to changes in climate, hormones, stress and medication. It’s important to have a facial and skin analysis every three months to adapt your products for healthy balanced skin all year round.

BEAUTY TIP:

Regular facials along with using an SP F 50+ daily will dramatically help premature ageing.

BEAUTY TIP:

Feed your skin from the inside out. Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in antioxidants.

good vibrations THIS BRISBANE DUO HAS DISCOVERED A NEW WAY TO MAKE MUSIC. MEETING AS MUSICIANS, husband and wife team Elysia Humphries and Glen Brearley always had a passion for creating things. “I was recording for an independent record label and I needed band members, Elysia says. “Glen played saxophone and keyboards so I got him in. “We toured the East Coast, played festivals..but most musicians don’t make much money! So Elysia, a qualified naturopath and Glen, a radio producer, decided to create something new. In 2009, they opened a small natural health clinic in Bardon offering naturopathy and massage therapy. Four years on, the practice was thriving, but over time, Elysia found herself changing her approach. “When someone comes to see me, I look at their whole health, she says. “Patients were loving that I would call their other practitioners and we would chat about the person together. I kept thinking, “Wouldn’t it be great if this person was just down the hall! So the couple opened a second clinic, integrating

naturopaths, nutritionists, holistic doctors and more under one roof. “We have a real team here; we work together to solve someone’s health problems. With the massive work load, Glen quit his job and took up the role of practice manager at both the clinics. “Our feet haven’t touched the ground, but there are lots of rewards, Glen says. And the couple hope that owning their own business means that one day they can again immerse themselves in their first love – music. “We’ve probably got an album worth of stuff (music) that we’d love to finish eventually, Elysia says. “I’d love to be able to do both, but you have to focus on one thing at a time to do it well. I’m just focusing on building an amazing practice for people to work and for people to come and get great health advice. VIBE NATURAL HEALTH 92 COOLIBAH ST, BARDON 210 DAYS RD, GRANGE P 3366 7970 VIBENATURALHEALTH.COM.AU

get fired up! GRAVITY ZONE’S EXPERTS HAVE YOUR NUTRITION AND FITNESS COVERED. GRAVITY ZONE’S ONGOING success as an innercity fitness hub further cements the credibility and determination of its dedicated trainers and clients. Georgina Watson is no stranger to the fitness industry; far from it! In the last 20 years she has dabbled, studied and engrossed herself in weight management, nutrition, naturopathy, exercise physiology and much more. The result is Gravity Zone, where her clients find their weight loss and fitness journey’s much easier to tackle. Gravity Zone’s training is underpinned by the use of vibrating plates, upon which clients conduct a usual workout – but with a catch. The vibrating plates intensify the workout so that your muscles fire up and that in turn accelerates your metabolism, the growth of lean muscle mass and weight loss. This Whole Body Vibration technology has the potential to change your life combined with the right practitioners – who you can definitely find at Gravity Zone. There’s Ruth Carter, Paula

McLaughlin, Chris Donney and of course, Georgina Watson who are all dedicated to helping you achieve your health and fitness goals. Clients of Gravity Zone also receive the full benefits of structured nutrition plans that aid in the weight loss and lean muscle mass building process. Special cooking demonstrations are even held in the studio to help you stay informed and up to date with the latest nutrition tips. “My doctor said at my last appointment three months ago that my back injury was as good as it was going to get unless I got serious about losing weight and getting fit. My trainer promised that if I gave him 12 weeks of honest commitment I’d see a healthier, stronger me. The weeks unfolded, my size shrunk, my muscles grew and so did my strength and confidence. I’ve learnt so much and surpassed my goals. I’m strong now and pain-free!” NOVEMBER13

AT PILATES STUDIO 64, the team approaches Pilates and strength training in a contemporary way that allows clients to get the most out of their sessions. Jordanna Whittle’s Albany Creek studio offers private, semi, and mat classes for everyone from beginners to proficient Pilates practitioners, as well as BASI teacher training. And now Jordanna has some exciting news to share about the Albany Creek studio: they have upgraded their equipment and added some additional pieces to the space. The newest edition to the studio is a second Avalon System, which is a contemporary interpretation of Joseph Pilates’ classic equipment, with significant physiological, biomechanical and ergonomic enhancements. The Avalon is a highly adjustable resistance mechanism, meaning the resistance options available are dramatically increased. It promotes greater and more precise strength gains and the

new designs are far more comfortable for the user and prevent unnecessary stress on the body. Wins all around! The studio now also boasts two arm chairs and two step barrels for clients to use in private and duo sessions. “We are the only Brisbane-based studio to offer this equipment as Pilates Studio 64 is an affiliate BASI Pilates studio that provides training on the Avalon System,” Jordanna says.

Pilates is a great way to challenge your strength and resistance in an environment such as Pilates Studio 64, where they champion the use of advanced Pilates equipment and supportive training for both men and women. Timetable and prices are all available on the Pilates Studio 64 website. PILATES STUDIO 64 UNIT 6/707-709 ALBANY CREEK RD, ALBANY CREEK P 3325 5821 WWW.PS64.COM.AU

CHRISTMAS

GIFT GUIDE

STYLE HAS ROUNDED UP THE MOST EXCITING CHRISTMAS GOODIES AND CHARITABLE IDEAS TO HELP YOU AND OTHERS CELEBRATE A JOYOUS FESTIVE SEASON!

the gift of giving

THIS CHRISTMAS, GIVE SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A TOOTHBRUSH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE.

THIS CHRISTMAS, WHY not do something charitable in the season of giving? It won’t cost an arm or a leg but instead will help Brisbane’s homeless feel connected in a time of need. The goal is to put together 150 packs containing everyday essentials we take for granted. On Christmas day a lunch will be held at the mission where organiser Chris Michel will be volunteering and handing out gifts to the homeless. Before we get to Christmas, help Chris spread the word to friends and family who can donate items including: deodorant (roll on only), toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair combs and brushes, shampoo/conditioner, soap, shower gel/ body wash, tissues and hand sanitiser. No large items, clothing or food items are requested; just necessities would be appreciated. If 100 people donate $10 or supply the necessary items, then 100 packs can be instantly created and will give someone a chance to feel fresh and revived

www.stylemagazines.com.au

1113_BM_ p94-95.indd 95

this Christmas. It’s a very small gesture, but with lots of hands on deck, it will make light work. It’s not about how much you give, it’s about finding the spirit to help someone less fortunate by giving them the chance to have the invaluable necessities we use day to day. The homeless face many issues but Chris believes their biggest issue is wanting to connect with others and there is no better way then feeling less alone than on Christmas day. Donations can be given at either Aspley State High School or by contacting Chris directly to arrange a drop off time for items or cash donations. 100 percent of the donations are given to the Wesley Mission Brisbane. Help make one person feel less alone this Christmas.

More than 100 Christmas gift ideas await you!

inviting the outdoors in ANTHONY TREVOR OF SYNERGY DESIGN AND DRAFTING BRINGS THE OUTDOORS IN THIS SEASON. HOW OFTEN HAVE you thought about adding a deck or patio to your home, but put it in the too hard or expensive basket? With the warmth of summer and its natural breezes, a redesign of your home could be an easier and more affordable option than you may think. In fact, it could even make you money by adding value to your home! Many people are taking a closer look at the options available and are surprised at what they learn. For example, even if you have an old patio or deck there are many cost effective ways to tweak an outdoor living space and get some massive benefits, like a traditional BBQ out on the deck! Here’s what you could add to your home ... Increased usable living space - just by adding a

deck off your kitchen or living space and using the right type of doors. Natural cooling - a well designed home can be cooled with fresh, natural breezes (saving a small fortune in Air Con!). Shade - direct sun has a huge impact on any home, including wear and tear of surfaces. New entertainment spaces - some people are spending more time in these new spaces of their home than anywhere else. If you would like to learn more and see how great design can improve your home and lifestyle, contact Anthony at Synergy Design and Drafting. beauty in bangkok TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND HAVE A HOLIDAY AT THE SAME TIME. TRACY JOHNSTON DISCOVERS WHY AUSTRALIANS ARE HEADING TO THAILAND FOR COSMETIC SURGERY.

WHEN TRINA’S 22-YEAR relationship ended without warning, the 47-year-old was shattered. But the pragmatic Brisbane business owner used the crisis as the opportunity to transform her life. She began exercising, lost weight and gradually got her sparkle back. But despite her slimmer figure, there was one part of her body she couldn’t change: she describes the loose skin under her chin as her “turkey neck”, explaining it as a family trait. After much research, Trina rectified it with cosmetic surgery. And she chose Thailand as the place to do it. I’m at breakfast with Trina at Grande Centre Point Hotel in Bangkok. Just days earlier she had a mid-face lift, lower eyelid lift and neck lift (that got rid of the turkey neck) at Bangkok’s Bangpakok 9 International Hospital. Although her face is still swollen and tender, she is matter-of-fact about the work and takes her compression mask off to show me her new features. I’m a little queasy having never seen a ‘fresh’ facelift. The stitches are red and vivid and she looks like she’s been in the ring with Mike. Nevertheless Trina explains in detail how she will look once the bruising and swelling 112

1113_BM_ p112-113.indd 112

is gone and is clearly pleased with her experience and the result. Trina is one of 12 women I meet over the next five days in Thailand at the invitation of Medi Makeovers, a Sydney-based company offering ‘medical holidays’ to Thailand. A growing trend amongst Australians is to travel overseas for cosmetic surgery and dental work and, to date, Medi Makeovers have taken more than 2,000 patients to Thailand. The women on this trip have backgrounds as diverse as their ages - a mine worker, a model, mums, single young girls and professionals. Mother of five Alison, 37, from Victoria has had what is known as a Mummy Makeover – in her case a tummy tuck and breast lift. She has brought along her niece, Britney, 19, who has had a boob job (paid for by her boyfriend). Melissa 31, from WA has three children and opted for a Mummy Makeover also, Medi Makeover’s most popular package. Missy the Kiwi, 46, works for a Queensland mining company and ‘wanting to make the most of her holiday’ she has a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, liposuction and extensive dental work of crowns and implants.

THE IMPRESSIVE LOBBY IS A WELCOME RETREAT AFTER A DAY OF SHOPPING AND SIGHTSEEING

Everyone has different reasons for having cosmetic surgery. Some to regain their pre-baby body and others to boost their confidence. A couple of the women have experienced vast amounts of weight loss and require surgery to get rid of excess skin. Others simply want to look ‘damn hot’ for their husbands and partners. However, they all had the same reason for travelling to Thailand to do it. They couldn’t afford to have this work done in Australia: rates are roughly 70 percent cheaper in Bangkok. “I simply couldn’t find $20k to have work done in Australia, let alone justify it with five kids to look after,” says Alison. Trina’s three procedures in Thailand cost AU$7,200 including airfares and accommodation. In Australia, for the neck lift alone she was quoted $9,000. If affordability is the main reason, the other appeal is the ability to recover without the demands of work and family back home. The compulsory 10-night minimum stay for breast augmentation (14 nights for a standard tummy tuck), means the patient can rest, recover and be completely monitored and assisted while enjoying five-star luxury accommodation. Medi Makeovers’ escorted groups are scheduled to Thailand several times a year, however you can travel at any time as an individual. Patients are met at Suvarnabhumi Airport and are transported from airport to hospital then onto their hotel. Every step of the way they are guided through their journey and have the added piece of mind of an Australian Medi Makeovers representative staying in the hotel who is available to talk about any fears or concerns the women have. Once they can move again without pain, the women start to enjoy the sights and attractions of Bangkok with escorted trips to the theatre, dinners, massages and shopping. I got to meet many of these ladies pre- and post-op, so it was great to see them mobile (although some a little gingerly, especially after liposuction and tummy tucks), but by the time I left Thailand they were well and truly into holiday mode with daily massages and shopping. When I asked whether they were concerned about having surgery in a foreign country (and a developing country at that), all of the women said they had either done extensive research or

Thai medical staff are renowned for their gentle, caring nature and professionalism. had been referred by people they knew. The majority of Medi Makeovers patients go to the private Bangpakok 9 International Hospital, which performs thousands of cosmetic surgery procedures every year, however there are other hospitals that Medi Makeovers have access to in Thailand. The Thai doctors at the hospital have either been trained abroad or obtained the finest medical education from the most prestigious university in Thailand. 113

Siam Niramit Show

SIAM NIRAMIT IS AN AWARD WINING SHOW AND ONE OF THE LARGEST STAGE PRODUCTIONS IN THE WORLD. THIS SPECTACULAR SHOW OF THAI ARTS AND CULTURE TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY BACK THROUGH TIME INTO THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE KINGDOM OF SIAM. ASIATIQUE THE RIVERFRONT, IS BANGKOK’S NEWEST NIGHT SHOPPING MARKET AND A GREAT PLACE TO BUY GIFTS. FOR A MEMORABLE MEAL TRY BAAN KANITHA RESTAURANT, AN UPSCALE THAI FOOD RESTAURANT AND A FAVOURITE WITH THE THAI CONSULGENERAL AND HIS WIFE.

AMAZING SPECIAL EFFECTS AND STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY MAKES SIAM NIRAMIT A MAGNIFICENT VISUAL FEAST The women I met were also unanimous in their praise for the high level of service, care and friendliness of their Thai doctor and nursing staff. The hospitals and dental surgeries I visited in Bangkok and Pattaya were extremely clean and appeared to be efficiently run. And there are no hideous waiting lists. This is perhaps another reason why more Australians are opting for elective surgery in Thailand for non-cosmetic surgery too, such as knee reconstructions and hip replacements (Medi Makeovers can also arrange these types of operations). An Australian agency, Medi Makeovers is run by Daniela Pratico. Her first concern is the wellbeing of her clients and their families. She has developed a reputation for ensuring clients feel safe, get the best possible treatment and, if their surgery and recovery allows, enjoy a fabulous holiday. After spending 5 days with Daniela and her team in Thailand, it’s evident she cares very much about her patients and her phone never stops ringing as 114

1113_BM_ p114-115.indd 114

she organizes everything from hospital checkups to transfers and even sightseeing trips for family members. A new body may sound an unusual holiday souvenir but after meeting those whose confidence has been transformed after surgery, the experience was a life-changing one – for me, as well as those I met. And as for Trina? I spoke to her nine weeks after she returned to Brisbane and she is full of confidence. She loves her shapely, new neck and youthful face and is doing something she never dreamt of: online dating. Oh, and she’s booking a return trip to Bangkok to have further work done.
