EDITOR’S NOTE

S

editor’s note

Spring 2012

pring is the season where we put away our blacks and greys to pull out the brighter hues. It’s also the season where everything seems to thrive. The flowers blossom and bloom, while we (and the animals) come out of hibernation. With that in mind, it seemed fitting to launch Style Empire’s first issue. We launched our website and blog a few months back and were amazed at all of the support and positive feedback we received. We’re crossing our fingers that the same goes for our flip-book edition. 45 pages of beauty, style and travel features, not to mention a few photo editorials. It took 4 months, 16 days and 12 hours to complete, but here we are. We want to send out a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way. Flip from page to page and scroll your way through. Tweet us and email us to let us know your thoughts. The good, the bad and (hopefully not) the ugly either way, we want to hear them. Sincerely,

NEWS

Between March 12th and March 16th, downtown Toronto will be abuzz with fashion-fiends. As the days inch closer, the fashion tents start appearing before our eyes in the Financial District’s, David Pecaut Square. Crowd favourites, Bustle, Joe Fresh, Pink Tartan and David Dixon, are sure to bring in a sold

A staple in Toronto’s Queen West neighbourhood, Ultra nightclub, has closed its doors. The long-running hot spot underwent a face lift for INK Entertainment’s latest venture, CUBE.

“Evolution has always been a part of our growth. The growth of INK and the introduction of CUBE is our testament to our goal in always improving on what has been achieved. We had a desire to create something completely new and I believe we’ve been successful in doing that with CUBE,” says Charles Khabouth, INK Entertainment’s Chief Executive Officer. CUBE’s aesthetic was brought to life by Alessandro Munge of Munge Leung, one of Canada’s leading design firms. The space boasts a retro aesthetic with polished high gloss lacquered woods, bronzed-mirrored surfaces and the yellowish curved booth seating. It’s reminiscent of the 1960’s - how fitting, as we’re about to welcome back AMC’s Mad Men to the screen. Now the big question, scotch on-therocks or a vodka gimlet?

Over 30 years ago, Essie Weingarten changed the game of nail colour with just 12 shades.

dare you to name me a woman who doesn’t love going to the salon to get a manicure. The experience itself is just as important and the shade and finish of the chosen polish. It is with this passion and enthusiasm that Essie Weingarten, founder and president of Essie Cosmetics, has spent carefully crafting each and every new shade. It’s hard to believe that three decades ago, twelve colours were able to completely revamp an industry and change the way women looked at their nails. Celebrating their 30th anniversary, Weingarten wanted to break away from the limited choices that were available to women. Opting for a change from the basic platinum and red, Weingarten decided to take a risk and start creating shades that would shape the future of the nail colours and extend into over 250,000 salons in over 101 different countries. Weingarten draws inspiration from her own life

and experiences with shades like Ballet Slippers, which was harboured from her devotion to ballet as a young girl, to After Sex, a shade inspired by one of her favourite chocolates. Weingarten states, “I took a risk and made shades that were new and exciting.” This year, we’re seeing a new addition to the Essie family, the Luxeffects line, a series of five dazzling textured top coats. It has been a long road traveled by

Weingarten, from being named one of “Fashion’s Most Influential” by the NY Daily News, to being recognized with the Achiever Award from Cosmetic Executive Women for her monumental impact on the beauty industry. How To: Recharge Under the Sheets

LOVE

Slim & Sexy Available in cerise or lime, this rechargeable vibrator is curved to hit your g-spot with perfect precision. Silicone Vibrator, $80 each, Lelo Liv at ohhhcanada.ca.

Sex and Other Toys...

An Apple A Day Much like the apple, an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away. Sex not only keeps you active, but it also helps your complexion. Whether you have combination skin, dry skin or acne, sex makes you sweat, boosts circulation and act as a mild detox.

Improving your sex life shouldn’t be rocket science. It might take some time and effort but a better orgasm could be just a few nights away. 1. Be Happy In the Skin You’re In

The truth of the matter is, we are our hardest critic. Your partner isn’t looking at your muffin tops and imperfections when you’re naked they’re focusing on other things. Know your body and be familiar with what you enjoy - if you don’t know how to please you, how can they?

2. Talk the Talk

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your partner knew exactly what you like and dislike in bed? Give them just that.

Text: Chenessa Lam

The more you exercise your libido, the more active it gets. Couples often get into a slump when work gets busy, life gets hectic and time runs short, but don’t forget to make time for each other. If time doesn’t permit or schedules conflict, make time for yourself. The easier it is to orgasm at will, the easier it will come with your partner - no pun intended. Double Trouble This ergonomic vibrator packs a powerful punch. With two motors, you have twice the pulsing patterns and twice the fun! Silicone Vibrator, $133, Jimmyjane at ohhhcanada.ca.

Spring 2012

Some couples have been together for years, they know what buttons to push but yet they don’t communicate in the bedroom. It’s a good idea to drop a few hints verbally, since heavy breathing will only take you so far.

Environmental Effects Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized throughout the year will protect your skin from environmental threats such as smoke and pollution. These factors lead to dry skin, wrinkles and an uneven skin tone. Using a day cream with SPF will protect your skin leaving it visibly softer and smoother.

During the winter months, dryness is very common and can often get quite irritating. Using hydrating and moisturizing creams and products to help prevent and protect the reoccurrence of dry skin, hair, and lips is the best way to restore moisture and keep you looking fresh all year long.

Stay In Control Dehydrated skin caused by pollution, smoke and shaving can be irritating and uncomfortable for even the toughest men. Using a daily moisturizer on both your face and body may seem tedious and time consuming but by keeping moisturized and hydrated you can control your dry skin and help make it resilient and healthy looking for a longer lasting and visibly smoother look. Shave oils are especially important for men, these help open up the pores for a closer shave and free your skin from razor burn and dryness, leaving you with a complexion that is clear, comfortable and controlled. Spring 2012

ith signs of spring around the corner, soon the cold and snow will give way to freshly bloomed flowers and warm rays of sunshine. Nature aside, we have seen plenty of floral arrangements saunter down the runways of New York and Milan. Forget about the small delicate petals, this season, go big or go home. The key to trends it not to over do it, especially when it comes to prints – stay away from “The Secret Garden” from head to toe. Here are a few items to work into your wardrobe. Whether it be for a weekend getaway or a 4 month vacation, there are a few key items no one should leave without. Remember to protect your skin as well as your passport. A pair of shades and a reliable timepiece are also great to have. For the gadget fanatics, why not a Swiss Army USB flash drive? Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you should start slacking on facial hair upkeep. It can be rather bulky to carry your razor blade, electric razor and all your shaving creams and after-shave moisturizers. To avoid this, look for all-in-one tools that offer both a manual and electric blades, as well as convenient travel sets.

TRAVEL A warm embrace of beautiful beaches, inspiring sunsets and vibrant nightlife.

Discover Lagos

If you need a little “me time,” this understated gem is the perfect place to slow things down and unwind. With magnificent beaches, extremely friendly locals, and stunning historical structures, Lagos offers a leisurely oasis. It’s a smaller destination of the Algarve region, but far from lacking in pleasure.

Spring 2012

What to SEE From the moment you approach the city, Lagos offers lots for the eyes to admire. Settle into your hotel but waste no time to explore the old architecture and cobblestone alleys of this quaint city. Discover the many oratories, such as Oratório de São Gonçalo, to develop a sense of the rich Portuguese culture. Visit the Lagos’ Slave Market, the oldest in Europe, to understand the pivotal historical role of the city in Europe’s supply of slave labour. A definite must, however, is to book a boat tour to reveal the abundance of natural shore beauty.

42

Text: Akua Delfish

TRAVEL FEATURE

What to DO In this town, be sure to enjoy Lagos both day and night. Stop in one of the many pastry shops and treat yourself to a traditional Portuguese tart. Restaurants are plentiful and you will readily become familiar with Portuguese cuisine through the maintained authenticity provided in this area. As dusk falls, gather your fancy flats (no heels on the cobblestone) and return to the bars along Silva Lopes Street for a fun night. Be sure to stop inside of Shaker Bar to order a Strawberry Daiquiri from Rodrigues. It’ll be the BEST you’ve ever had. Tell him we sent you.

How to RELAX

Text: Akua Delfish

For the Record The beauty of Lagos versus some of the more well-known Algarve destinations is that it is far less commercialized. Hence, it offers more natural beauty amidst a low-key city vibe. The locals here are extremely friendly and welcome casual conversations with visitors. The weather in Lagos is generally fantastic from May through September. Remember to pack comfortable walking shoes as there will be a few inclines in your path.

Spring 2012

Your purpose is to unwind and do YOU. With gorgeously carvedout, secluded beaches like Praia Dona Ana, Lagos offers the perfect opportunity for me-time. Equally experience one of the most breathtaking sunsets from Meia Praia. However, sometimes the beach is simply not close enough. Thankfully, for you and your lazy bone, most accommodations in this area will offer open-air pool amenities with a pool side bar. Grab yourself a cocktail, add some kick if you’re sassy, and enjoy the sun within proximity of your room. May we suggest a Caipirinha?
