EVAN RAUCH We interviewed— and in the process, got distracted by some seriously shiny objects—the freshman jewelry designer behind Designs by Evan HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOU TO MAKE A PIECE OF JEWELRY? The majority take about an hour each because I knot between each bead when I bead them, but it depends on the necklace.
WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE IN YOUR JEWELRY? I use a lot of different materials. I use a lot of leather for the chokers and shorter necklaces. I use different gemstones, too. I use pyrite a lot, which is a popular stone, and also other ones like quartz and moonstone and labradorite.
WHERE DO YOU GET ALL THESE MATERIALS? I go to different bead shows–mostly in Houston, because that’s where I’m from. I also get some online and some [from] vendors at shows or stores.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR JEWELRY? Right now, my stuff’s at c.jane [in Austin]. It’s not always there; it’s as often as I can make it when I have time outside of school. It’s sold at three other stores in Houston, too. I [also] do trunk shows at sorority houses. Over the break, I had a trunk show in Houston at my house. I sent out an invitation over Instagram. That’s where I post most of my stuff, and I’ll post that I’m having a show. [People] come to my house and hang out, and it’s fun.

Car Trouble: Relationship running out of gas? Here’s how to get back on the road to romantic bliss… There aren’t many things that can disrupt our lives quite like car trouble. We depend on our cars for so much, and when they are running great, life is good. The problem is that because these cars are such an important part of our lives, when we have car trouble, we can easily find ourselves in a rut. The same is true for relationships: when everything is going well—the metaphorical tank is full and the windows are down—we feel unstoppable, but when the passion is dead and the romance keeps stalling out, things can seem pretty hopeless. So, let’s say your relationship is broken down on the side of the road. Here is how to get that spark back to jump-start your relationship’s engine. Everyone knows about the honeymoon stage and how everything is so perfect for the first couple months. There are sparks and butterflies in those early stages, and it almost seems like magic. But eventually, the excitement of a new journey fades, and
all of the sudden, the life in your once-exciting relationship is all but gone. I remember being at that point: I was in a very committed, pretty happy seven-month relationship, when I started to feel like we were sputtering out of gas. I tried everything, from romantic dinners to buying flowers—we even tried giving each other space—but no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t seem to get back into full gear. In a last chance effort to save our dying relationship, we decided to get out of our comfort zones together. We did things as simple as going to haunted houses and riding roller coasters to becoming vulnerable to each other, sharing our most personal fears, pains and regrets. Having those new experiences together deepened the emotional bond between us and recreated the same experiences and feelings we had when we were first falling for one another. And just like that, the energy, desire and passion were pumped back into our relationship, and we checked out of the auto shop and got back on the highway, cruising to somewhere sunny and 75. While it may be obvious you are having trouble, sometimes it takes getting under the hood and digging deep into your relationship’s most crucial parts to rediscover the model on which you built your relationship in the first place. When you know what you need to make your relationship run smoothly, you can find ways to make it happen. My designs are youthful and incorporate recent trends with techniques used in the past. My evening gown’s skirt uses a modern cartridge pleating, which was very popular during the Civil War era. The technique lets me compress around 20 feet of fabric into one skirt. I also painted and beaded my own fabric, which gives my designs an artisanal approach.

ROXY ROCA We talked Old Settler’s Fest, James Brown and The Jeffersons with Taye Cannon, the lead singer of this seven-man Austin-based band pumping out a sound best described as Powerhouse Southern Soul
How would you describe Roxy Roca’s sound? I would say if you grew up listening to James Brown, you’ll like our show. In no way am I comparing myself to James Brown; he’s just a big inspiration.
How did you come up with the band name? It’s a reference to [a character on] The Jeffersons. That was my favorite show when I was a kid. It’s a long story; in a way it has to do with the Civil Rights Movement. I grew up in the Deep South, and there was some racism, and I was never raised that way. The show had a really big imprint on me as a child, and I really liked Roxy Roker. When we were actually doing the band, I was like, “We need something that reeks of soul like Roxie Roker.” It’s a different spelling, but it’s a twist on her name.

Who are your musical influences?
What can people expect from a Roxy Roxa show?
My brother was heavily into Michael Jackson—I remember that—but I was very much into my dad’s records. I was listening to Otis Redding, Marvin Gay, James Brown. He was a huge influence because of the passion he put in. There’s a lot of rock ‘n’ roll influence too.
We got a new song out called “Love Maker DeVille”—it’s a fun tune. It’s funky, but it also rocks out. I think that’s a good indication of what you’re in store for. [Another] song called “Happiness is a Choice”—we don’t play it every show. It’s a funky tune and it’s kind of adlibbed a bit…you have to see it to [get it].
Do y’all have any pre-show rituals? I can’t speak for everybody. Myself, I usually go somewhere, warm up vocally, get into meditation and send out to the universe that I want to be bringing everyone together in the room to forget about what’s weighing on them. It’s bringing people together; the live music experience is part of the life experience.
You have seven people in your band—that’s a lot! We’ve fluctuated between 10 and seven over the years. Seven has been a lucky number for making it happen on the road. We knew it was going to be a challenge at the beginning— we’ve had our creative, passionate approach and our business approach. You have to make

decisions sometimes, and you have a couple people and you put your trust in them. Then there are big decisions that [everyone contributes to]. But yeah, it’s a lot of schedules to organize. We all play in Roxy Roca only. We’re committed to this project. We all just felt from the beginning that the more single-minded we were with our energy and focus, [the easier] we’d be able to get this in front of people.
Do you have any advice for young musicians? I always tell young musicians coming up to get a job in the industry, make some friends. Everyone in bands is out there working, and aside from a great sound and a great show, it helps to have those personal relationships with people in bars and clubs.
You’re playing Old Settler’s Fest this year. Excited about it? It’s really special to be a part of that and bring some soul and funk energy to the festival. We’re gonna bring it. I can’t wait.
