2014 ANNUAL REPORT

introducing: studioMAIN who we are

what we do

studioMAIN is a non-profit organization that mobilizes the design community and engages the local community to encourage innovative design for everyday life. As designers we create solutions and interventions for the urban fabric: solutions that challenge us to participate in areas of the city ranging from the basic to the most engaging of spaces. studioMAIN first opened its doors to the public in February of 2012. During that first year, studioMAIN focused on educating the public about design and the built environment. This effort focused largely on holding public exhibitions, which ranged from showing student work to exhibiting professional design awards. studioMAIN also created several in-house design exhibits and hosted the opening of a locallymade architectural film as part of the Little Rock Film Festival. Perhaps most importantly, studioMAIN and Create Little Rock teamed together for the inaugural Pop Up in the Rock. In 2013, studioMAIN continued holding monthly design exhibitions and partnered with the Arkansas Arts Center to host an academic symposium on the Bauhaus in Arkansas. Pop Up in the Rock was held on 7th Street, and in partnership with Keep Little Rock Beautiful and the City of Little Rock, studioMAIN rolled out a new local design competition, Envision Little Rock. To close out the year, studioMAIN held the first annual Arkansas Design Awards show exhibiting award-winning work from the local chapters of the AIA, ASLA and ASID. studioMAIN has continued its exponential growth, with 2014 being its most impactful year yet! Our role as a design advocate has been pushed to the forefront through the continued success of Pop Up in the Rock and Envision Little Rock. The Little Rock Mayor approached studioMAIN to create the Little Rock Vision report, which focused on four key areas for redevelopment in the city, and was credited with helping convince the Little Rock Technology Park to select downtown as its home. studioMAIN is currently working with UALR Chancellor Dr. Joel Anderson to help prepare a new vision for South University Avenue.

testimonials

“The collective architectural design talent represented at studio Main is simply phenomenal! To have the collaboration of ideas emanating from some of the best design firms, not only in Arkansas but in the region, has been a tremendous resource for the city to draw upon as we continue to redevelop and build our city. Their work in visualizing the Technology Park as a signature revitalization element on Main Street was the critical factor convincing the Authority Board to locate there. What a special treat for our city to have this resource to draw upon!”

“...Once Park Hill was chosen as the 2014 PopUp location, the opportunity to be a part of the team to make that event happen presented itself. To say I was impressed would be a huge understatement. Working with the collection of young professionals at Studio Main was the highlight of my year. Smart, devoted, dedicated, fun and committed are a few words that come to mind to describe this group. It is no wonder PopUp has been such a success.” Steve Winchester 2014 President - Park Hill Business & Merchants Association 2015 Chairman - NLR Chamber of Commerce Board Member - Arkansas Better Business Bureau

Mayor Mark Stodola City of Little Rock

“For the past two years, studioMAIN has played an important role in a number of courses at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, including Rhetoric and Communication II, an Honors course I co-teach with Dr. Jeremy Ecke. In the course, we cover a module on urban planning. Jennifer Herron has visited the class to speak about how studioMAIN is working to move ideas to plans to reality. Several members of the studioMAIN board, all volunteers, have also contributed to the development and evaluation of our students’ efforts to bring urban planning to the UALR campus. It is clear that studioMAIN will be an important driving force, for decades, behind projects that will transform communities and make Little Rock a more livable and exciting city.” George H. Jensen, PhD Chair and Professor, Department of Rhetoric and Writing, University of Arkansas at Little Rock

“Working with studioMAIN provided the graduate students in my Strategic Planning class at UALR the opportunity to have real, hands-on experience with the strategic planning process, while giving back to the community at the same time. As they examined studioMAIN’s mission, vision, and goals and developed recommendations for the future, the students also came to understand the need for smart design in all aspects of life and how it can affect social and economic development in the long term. The students also became committed to studioMAIN’s cause - nearly six months after the class has ended, students are still finding ways to stay involved!” Vickie L. Edwards, PhD MPA Assistant Professor | Institute of Government Coordinator, Center for Nonprofit Organizations Managing Editor, Journal of Public and Nonprofit Affairs University of Arkansas at Little Rock

CHARRETTE Pop Up in the Rock - Park Hill @ Park Hill Baptist Church Over 50 community members and PopUp volunteers gathered at Park Hill Baptist Church to brainstorm ideas for Pop Up Park Hill. Bethany Berry began the charrette with a short presentation explaining the goals of PopUp and highlighting the successes of PopUp Main Street 2012 and PopUp 7th Street 2013. The group then took a walking tour down JFK Boulevard along the proposed Pop Up site from B Ave - D Ave. Business owners and community members pointed out issues they would like to see PopUp address. Upon return to Park Hill Baptist, we divided into smaller groups to discuss ideas in more detail, sketching on a site map. Each small group then presented their ideas to the full audience. The community members were enthusiastic and highly- engaged, providing many critical insights and ideas to begin the Pop Up planning process.

JULY ANNOUNCEMENT Envision Little Rock Following in the success of the 2013 Envision Little Rock Ideas Competition, Envision Little Rock 2014 refocuses on a rapidly growing area of southwest Little Rock. Three decades ago the Otter Creek neighborhood was envisioned as planned community nestled in the oak and pine forests of southwestern Pulaski County. Ground broke on the first home in 1976, and now a population of several thousand live in the 800 acre semi-private neighborhood. The existing development around Otter Creek caters to carcentric lifestyles, consists largely of low-density, singleuse land development and fragmented green space. This competition proposes that we utilize innovative design and planning concepts to retrofit the area to create a more diverse, cohesive urban & suburban fabric within walkable and identifiable public spaces.

PLANNING South Main Street Public Arts Master Plan Mason Ellis & Jordan Thomas presented the SOUTH MAIN STREET PUBLIC ARTS MASTER PLAN @ the Sept SOMA Businesses & Merchants meeting. In early 2013, studioMAIN was approached with the idea of creating a master streetscape and art installation plan for South Main Street to define the SoMA district, while also expressing the community’s unique character and energy. The final document formed an organizational strategy for street amenities, such as benches, signage and bus shelters, as well as a plan for locating art installations. Currently the master plan in being implemented with five new art installations scheduled to be complete in 2015, including a new gateway at the south end of Main Street.

SEPTEMBER

COMPETITON South Main Public Art studioMAIN believes works of art add value to the built environment. They can transform places with added meaning, interaction, beauty and context, creating memorable encounters for people in those places. studioMAIN developed a Master Plan for the South Main Street area and incorporated sites to include sculptures designed and made by local artists. In the summer of 2014, studioMAIN applied and was successfully awarded a $25,000 grant from the Horn Foundation. Due to the award of grant dollars, other entities such as AAD, LLC and the Business Improvement District - Quapaw contributed dollars toward the installation of the sculptures and towards the South Main Master Street Plan. As as result, approximately, $45,000.00 was allocated towards this endeavor. 3 artists from Arkansas have been selected, models submitted and artwork to be installed fall of 2015!

CHARRETTE Fay Jones School of Architecture 4th Year studio Design Charrette On the Friday afternoon of September 26, The University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture 4th year design studio took over studioMAIN in order to present their semester long design projects to local Emerging Professionals. Lead by Assistant Professor Mark Manack and Visiting Assistant Professor Alison Turner, this semester’s design project asks the students to imagine and design a new Arts Magnet High School located on the 400 block of Main Street in downtown Little Rock. James Meyer, Jonathan Opitz, James Sullivan, Adam Day and Brandon Bibby spent several hours going through each student’s site sketches and design providing focused feedback on community and the site’s contextual relationships.

POP UP IN THE ROCK Beginning in 2012, studioMAIN and Create Little Rock have come together each year and adopted a few blocks to transform for a weekend with PopUp in the Rock. Pop Up in the Rock is part of a national movement called the “Better Block Project. Our goal is to enhance a forgotten, desolate or car dominated street into a more community-oriented area for a weekend with the goal of inspiring permanent change. This group of young professionals engages with community members to determine specific needs and institute changes such as bike lanes, shops, dining pop-ups and entertainment. By transforming just a few blocks into a thriving, complete locale, Pop Up in the Rock exemplifies the idea that developing potential, even block-by-block, can make our city better. This year, Pop Up teamed with the Park Hill neighborhood to transform the car-dominated JFK Boulevard into an active, pedestrian friendly locale. The results were phenomenal, and we are optimistic that this temporary demonstration will spur permanent change in Park Hill.

PLANNING Creating University Village studioMAIN currently has a team of designers providing creative solutions for The University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The University has long struggled with the crossing of University Avenue that boarders the current western edge and separates the institution from the retail and parking on the western side of the busy avenue. studioMAIN has developed detailed plans to address concerns of pedestrian safety, traffic flow, aesthetics and urban infill to revitalize the corridor.

STRATEGIC PLAN UALR Strategic Planning In 2014, the UALR School of Public Administration teamed up with studioMAIN to develop a strategic plan for the future of the organization. During the course of the 2014 Fall Semester, a graduate level group of students studied studioMAIN’s fledgling success and developed recommendations to better ensure the longevity and vitality of the nonprofit. These students provided necessary, academic insight and an ‘outside’ opinion that has really helped studioMAIN craft goals for the upcoming year. We look forward to continued partnership with UALR and the opportunity to combine education with advocacy for good, smart design.
