Dear Students, Of travel and discoveries... Of cultures and historical treasures... Of nature, wilderness and beauty... The hunger for novelty has always propelled me to travel to faraway places... When I travel, I travel to feel free, free from my daily routines, free from planned schedules and meetings and things to do, free from my cultural restraints... And yet… Once in a new country you see me holding a schedule of all the places I want to visit, and all the things I want to do. Unconsciously, I carry my habits with me wherever I go... even if I might giggle a little easier, or wear more comfortable attires, the cultural restrains embedded in me remain wherever I go... My friend once said “When we travel, it is not just a suitcase we carry with us, it is all the luggage that we have amassed within us...” Years later, having traveled the height and breadth of the world, another friend of mine once pondered “What next? What else is there to discover that can still interest us? Pique our curiosity and make us experience bewilderment again? Together we answered: “The human mind!” A life, one life, any life, is full of journeys of hope, dreams, ups and downs, trials and triumphs… A life, one life, any life, is the most mysterious, intriguing fascinating journey anyone can take. We live our lives as travelers in this world, yet some of us chose to close our borders, afraid of experiencing the other, never understanding the true meaning of a being a traveler. May you, my students, be the world’s best travelers. And may your journey in life be full of amazing discoveries and adventures... See you in 2015, Have a great New Year!

Cover Story

Nasser AlQatami Around the Globe with Flight965.com What inspired you to start a travel blog? Well, when the blog launched I was already well-versed in the blog world, in a DIY kind of way. I have started a music blog (LOFT965. com) to some success and learned the ins and outs of blogging. Therefore, I decided to put another hobby of mine to good use. It was a risk because travel journalism is a different animal. Yet, it worked! Also, many people were asking me about travel destinations and suggestions, so I decided to compile it all in one blog. Now, all I have to do, when someone asks me about a destination, is plug in the name in the search engine on Flight965.com and send them the link.

What are you doing in Andorra and how did you get there? We were on a trip to explore the Southwestern regions of France, thanks to the great work of the French Embassy in Kuwait in promoting tourism. We arrived at the Pink City, Toulouse, and loved every minute of it. The food was great and the people where incredibly friendly. There was no shortage of activities (Airbus Museum, City Of Space and amazing restaurants). We had a blast. Then we moved deeper into the country to visit Albi, a small sleepy city on the River Tarn. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2010. The experience was monumental.

What instigated your passion for traveling? And who supported this passion? When I was younger, I used to travel with my grandparents all the time. They both had a great passion for world history, politics and culture. Every time I would ask about a country, stemming from my fascination with cartography, they would have many interesting facts to tell me about it.

At the end of the trip, we had two days to spare before going on another press trip. I surveyed the map, yet again, for destinations. Years ago, I wrote my Master’s thesis on microstates. I spent years studying and researching them, including Andorra. So, I figured, considering proximity, we would take a little road trip to cross the Pyrenees Mountains into this unique little country.

With age, I guess I became intrigued to find out for myself what this world is about and once I started working, I made a pact with myself (and my cousin, Jana) that I will not visit countries I have been to. Now, my outlook has changed, but that period of time really took me on a whirlwind of exploring the world and, most-importantly, self-realization of sorts. How many countries have you visited so far? And which is the most remarkable and why? I am currently answering you from my 76th country, Andorra. If you count Scotland, Hong Kong and Macau as separate countries/ entities, then it’s my 79th. Regardless, I find that experiences precede country count. But, I still count with fervor. I can’t say one is more remarkable than the other. I have certainly had amazing moments in some places and not-so-cute moments in others. However, if I had to choose a destination it would be by genre. If it’s for sunny beach spots, it’s Zanzibar and Rio. If it’s for nightlife, it will always be New York City. For relaxation, it would have to be Iceland. My favorite three places overall are Cambodia, Iceland and anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-saharan Africa has never let me down, whether it’s South Africa or Tanzania or Zambia or Kenya.

‫قصة الغالف‬

What are the essential items you never travel without? The most cherished and important thing I need that is absolutely essential is an international adapter and a good partner in crime. Also, an iPod that can carry all your music, with some playlists made especially for the trip. What are the key elements you look for in a place while planning for your next trip? This is going to sound ludicrously cheesy, but I like the element of wonder. By that, I mean I like to go to places I haven’t seen before regardless if they suit my needs or not. Considering that, an open ticket is mandatory or having it be close to a place you love or somewhat like. Spontaneity is the most underestimated option of travel decisions. Other than that, the weather is important. I’m not saying don’t go during the low season, because I have done that numerous times, but avoid hurricane season and things of that nature. What are the standards you use in order to rate a location / hotel? It really depends on the destination and the type of trip. A specific kind of tourism requires a specific kind of accommodation. However, I am always partial to anything quirky or modern. Also, if the lobby area is lively and social, it’s always a hint. I am not into business hotels nor humdrum chain hotels. For cities, pick the one frequented with people in your own age demographic. For beach, pick the one with the best service. For whatever else, research. What are the hottest new travel destination for 2015? I wouldn’t say I am the go-to source for that kind of question. I know what I like and I stick to it; there are a few destinations I always recommend whenever asked: Sri Lanka - Anywhere on the coast is good. Make sure you get a good hotel. There’s something about the tropical lush there that you can’t get anywhere. Kandy is not coastal, but it’s also stunning.

Toulouse, France - A young city bustling with the arts and sciences. Also, a great appreciation for everything culinary. A must for all those who want a European destination with a warm welcome and lots of activities. Palau - The most beautiful spot on Earth. Hands down. Riga, Latvia - The unofficial capital of the Baltic states is quickly becoming a great travel destination. It is absurdly beautiful during Summer, with all its festivals and breathtaking old town. Nosy Be, Madagascar - Scenic pristine waters, amazing fauna and probably the greatest place to read a book. It’s hard to reach, but worth every transit stop. Portobelo, Panama - A little-known gem of a village, rich in history and magnificent scenery. Also, a great place to do some diving.

Any words of advice for our readers as they’re planning their 2015 vacations? Go find a globe. Spin it. Randomly land your finger on it. Find the closest airport to that destination. Google the heck out of it. If you don’t think you want to do it, then coerce yourself to go. Oh, and grab your best friend and a LonelyPlanet guidebook. Moreover, visit flight965.com to see if there are any posts pertaining to it. Are there any destinations that are on your bucket list, still? Yes, many. There’s so much to see out there. I have yet to visit New Zealand. I can’t wait to go there. East Timor and Bhutan are also on the list. Currently, I am on the lookout for anything about beautiful Peru - it looks like absolute perfection.

Asheville, North Carolina, USA An oasis of liberalism in the South. It has the highest density of vegetarian restaurants per capita and everyone there is a friend, literally. Gammarth, Tunisia - A idyllic seaside town on the Mediterranean with so much to offer. These days there are direct flights from Kuwait! What do you think of Kuwait as a touristic destination and how do you think it could improve in that field? There are many things Kuwait needs to do before aspiring to be a tourist destination. But, if you ask me about the potential… I think it’s huge. We have bountiful beaches, great history and an amazing location. The best tourist destinations are the ones that are hospitable to their guests. Tourists want to go to places where they are fully welcomed, at ease and accepted by the local community. This is the number one priority for a tourist. So, there’s a lot to take into consideration when aiming to be a tourist destination. Xenophobia needs to be eradicated for any place to be a commendable tourist destination, generally speaking.

I would encourage my children to join all kinds of sports, but I think Parkour would be a great choice of sports. It is a very unique sport that can make you fit.

I want my children to very educated and talented with numbers; mathematicians. I think Thuraya Al-Otouibi is a good public speaker, she’s very articulate.

A talent that would promote inner growth and enables others to get inspired and create aspiration to set out their own talents.

Since I was young, I used to play the piano and I would like to see my children do the same. Unfortunately, I do not know any Kuwaiti talented youth.

In my opinion, encouraging the youth to discovering their talents is important. Also, if they are involved in sports it will build their character and body.

Self defense is an integral activity that every parent should teach their children to defend themselves. I want my children to learn martial arts.

The real Fouz @therealfouz on Instagram. Her beauty and capability to use it a in good way is practically considered a talent.

Students Said Investigation

Investigation

The effective means to develop a talent A talent is an innate asset that will define your aptitudes and skills once it is developed. Some drift away from their talents due to their intense focus on their studies and career path. However, your talent will not only define your personality, it will definitely be an added value to your daily work. For example, if you’re into sports, you will be fit and/or you will be more focused if you play and instrument. For that reason, STUDENTALK Magazine want to encourage all its readers to develop their talents. To get more insight on ways to develop your talents, who would know better than those talented students that were previously featured in the magazine. Here is what our students said:

30

Nasser Ali, the previous participant in the Talent Competition for DJing developed a DJing company STYLOPLAY with DJ Kuwexican for local and international events. Ali, also known as DJ NAS, considers a talent as an opportunity for a career path. He mentioned that “ one needs to first make a decision to become better and set goals. Once the target has been established a plan of action or “Game plan” should be set in place in order to recognize the most effective and quickest path to the desired destination.” Also DJ NAS suggested that one should encourage themselves to accomplish their goals. ‘Nike’s famous slogan, “Just Do It” comes into play. It speaks for itself just be sure to stay clear of unimportant distractions and NEVER GIVE UP!’ said DJ NAS.

Time is money. One way to effectively invest in your time is by developing your talent. One of STUDENTALK’s talents, Yousef AlNasser, who performed a theatrical piece, mentioned: “Setting time aside to work on your talents is most essential for development. Without exerting more and more effort into the things you love doing, you’ll keep limiting yourself from successful development.” Also, since the idea of giving up is available if other elements were not considered. To harness your talent Al-Nasser said that “Having a passion for your talent allows you to be open to new and different perspectives of the art, and allows you to broaden your creativity.”

Many have heard the phrase “believe in yourself” on all social networks, yet they still underestimate it. If you do not understand what you are truly capable of you will never achieve your true greatness. Faisal Al-Dabous, the winner of STUDENTALK Talent Competition in rapping mentioned that “ Lack of confidence can effect a person mentally and won’t allow them to perform at a 100% no matter how talented they are. “ And let’s throw another cliché bomb by saying “practice makes perfect.” Some might argue and say that no one is perfect, but practicing will help you perfect your talent or at least almost. For that reason Faisal stated that “ The more you practice the more skills you develop which results in improvement” as an advice for future talents.

You can be good at something, but it is your choice to be great at it! Acknowledging the level of performance you want to reach is imperative. Setting the bar up high for yourself will transform you from a talented person to an expert. Hashim Al-Nasser, STUDENTALK Guitar Winner for the Talent Competition, emphasized on this point by saying that “a large part of developing your talent is through challenging yourself to learn something new, something above your current level of skill. You will not further excel in your talent unless you start pushing yourself to learn new skills, techniques and abilities that will ultimately add new dimensions to your chosen talents” said Al-Nasser.

From last year’s experience, how do you plan to develop the club’s activities for the upcoming year? KuMSA 2013-14 excelled on many levels, however the focus was mainly humanitarian as it should be an essential part of not only our careers as doctors but also our lives as humans. This year KuMSA will not only continue on that path but we hope to expand the focus on to other aspects academically and socially the way we execute best, creatively! Did you encounter any obstacles? If yes, please mention them. Yes, some events take place at time when we have exams, and some events need funding and sponsorship that are sometimes hard to find.

Making Kuwait Proud Active Students

Is It Scary? A novel by Aysha Al-Rowaished Exercising your body is easy as you can head to the gym for workouts, but how can one exercise their mind? Well, enriching your imagination will increase your creative abilities and help you focus even during study time. A thrilling book written by Aysha Al-Rowaished, "Is It Scary", will allow your mind to embark on an imagination roller coaster. Inspired by MJ's music, Ms. Al- Rowaished has extracted parts from MJ's songs in order to provide life lessons to her readers. Are you working on any other books at the moment? I love to write whenever I have time. I carry a notebook wherever I go in case an idea comes to mind and hopefully I will have other books in the future. Do you think the Kuwaiti reader enjoys reading Horror/Thriller genres? How do you think they will react to your book? Kuwaiti readers enjoy reading something interesting and new. I can’t predict how they will react but hopefully they will enjoy this new and interesting storyline.

What sparked your passion to become a writer? I have always found it easier to express myself through writing and had a love for writing since high school. How did you come up with the idea for "Is It Scary?"? "Is it Scary" is an inspiration from Michael Jackson’s music. I would listen to the stories in his songs and wonder about the background of it. These songs talk about more than just heartbreaks and love, but also ghosts and monsters. What are the life lessons that are included in your book? There are many depending on the readers' perceptive. Mainly, I talked about bullying and the effect it has on others. It doesn’t necessarily have to happen in high schools but even in our daily lives. The main lesson that I tried to point out is that we should not judge a person before understanding their situation. How does your book reconnect with the audience? It is a life lesson but hidden in a world of my imagination. Therefore, I wanted the readers to escape their reality and dive in this fantasy. At the end, they will conclude the life lesson or just enjoy a bit of thrill.

40

In your opinion, what are the effective means to implement to allow the Kuwaiti youth to enjoy reading? The variety of books available that can make the Kuwaiti youth relate to. The more the reader is able to relate to the story and the characters the more interesting it can become. Sometimes books can be interesting when the story seems unrealistic like in fantasy books. Where is the book available? It is available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon.com and can also be found at Jarir bookstore and hopefully more bookstore in Kuwait and Bahrain. What are your last words to the readers? Once you get your copy of ‘Is It Scary?’ write a review of what you think on Amazon or my Instagram page: @isitscary54. I love hearing people’s honest feedback.

Fahad Sulaiman Alhumaidi – From Kuwait to China “I have an ambition and I want to reach that ambition as fast as I can. I was looking for a road to take a path that will make me reach my ultimate goal, certainly I found this road and I started my journey with AIESEC. Making Kuwait Proud LOYAC

LOYAC Volunteers Fahad and Fajer, volunteering to renovate old homes

Charitable activities such as raising money are beneficial for our society as it raises social responsibility amongst the people in the community. LOYAC has constructed a one of a kind program, "Homes" were volunteers physically conduct labor work to renovate ramshackle homes! STUDENTALK had the pleasure to interview Fahad Fahad and Fajer Assad to dive into their experience with LOYAC. Read this fruitful interview to be inspired about building homes in areas far from the city.

How did you know about the “Homes” program by LOYAC? I started my volunteer work experience in 2007 at LOYAC. I used to be up-to-date with their programs, and “Homes” really caught my attention. I decided to volunteer to build the first home in Kuwait and not abroad like other volunteers would do.This place was established for divorced and widowed women. After that I started working at the program in order to build other homes in Kuwait. For whom were the homes built for? And how difficult was it to build these homes? Fahad: Majority of these homes have been built for families who are expats or without nationalities. The first stage of construction was relatively hard, however after receiving help and guidance from the team leader, the task became much easier and simpler. My level of experience gradually increased after building a few homes. Fajer: We conduct labor work in order to renovate ramshackle houses for the people who cannot afford to move out. The main obstacle we faced is the difficulty to find financial support from sponsors. Building houses requires several equipments and materials that are costly. However, I would like to extend my warm gratitude to ABYAT for providing us with constructional materials. Other obstacles we face is that we renovate building during summer times that don’t have air-conditioning which causes fatigue to most of the volunteers. Also, we have problems with transportation since we build homes in very far places.

44

‫فخر الطلبة لوياك‬

There are several ways to support people, why did you choose building homes in particular? Fahad: Along with a focus on building homes, we also aided in providing food and monetary items. However, the construction of homes in particular was due to the fact that having a roof above ones head is considered one of the most important factors for survival. Fajer: I conducted several volunteer work such as the contributing to social wellfare and helping autistic children. However, I dedicate my most of my volunteer work towards homes because I have been working there for several years and my passion for it grew day by day. It was the place where I can exert my energy and my passion to my team members. We will work together in order to rennovate 11 houses by the end of the year.

A question for Fajer: As a girl did you find it difficult to work in the construction field in order to build the homes? In the beginning, the idea of a girl in Kuwait conducting labor work that is mostly done by men was hard to grasp. However, my ambition to learn new things pushed me towards the idea. Everyone in my family thought it abnormal coming back home with paint all over my clothes. They thought I would quit due to the strenuous work, which made me insist on proving everyone wrong. Though I had Diabetes while building my first house, I still managed to change my eating habits and lifestyle to be fit to work and keep up with my insulin medication. Observing people in need had an emotional effect on me which made me be more thankful with the life I had and pushed me to renovate more homes.

A question for Fahad: What are the most important characteristics in a person that would make them the perfect charitable person? I believe that love, joy, humbleness, happiness, the love to give. Basically all the random acts of kindness that LOYAC offers is what makes a person charitable.

To Enlighten Throughout our journey we have learned a lot about the food we eat, where it comes from, how it is prepared, and the impact these practices have on our health, economy, and our planet. People have the right to know. And we transparently tell them what they want to know.

To Live A life well lived is a life full of health, not deprivation. A life well lived is a life enriched with food that is good to your taste buds, good for your well-being, and good for our communities and the environment. To Empower People pursue their dreams when they are empowered. To empower individuals we must develop their talent and provide them with better choices.

To Create In a nation with so much potential, each person can create and recreate every day. Young talents can leave a legacy of value that helps their community and brings them joy. To Guard We make better burgers and sell them for profit, but never at the cost of our people or our planet. Everyone instinctively guards his/ her home. A clean balanced environment is the home we wish to live in, and sustain for all of us to enjoy.

Flu Defense

Arm yourself from a contagious atmosphere AAAA-CHOO. Sorry, excuse me! It is the season when everyone can easily get an influenza. Whether you got it from a classmate or due to change of weather, you must be prepared to defend yourself from any contagious diseases. STUDENTALK Magazine is here to provide you with health tips in order to enjoy winter in a sick-free zone.

1 4 60

Wash Hands Frequently Another of the most effective ways to prevent colds and the flu is simply washing your hands properly and frequently. This will help to get rid of cold germs you pick up from doorknobs and stair rails, and keep you from getting them into your body. One study found that college students who washed hands frequently had fewer cold and flu symptoms.

Take Probiotics Probiotics are "good" bacteria that can help keep the body healthy and protect it from "bad" bacteria — and there are even some thought that taking probiotics may help to prevent cold and flu viruses. Regular use of Probiotics kept people healthier and reduced the incidence of upper respiratory infections (like the common cold). Consider eating foods that contain probiotics or taking Probiotic supplements to prevent flu.

2 5

Drink Plenty of Fluids General good health practices keep your body strong and ready to fend off cold germs and the flu virus. And that includes drinking plenty of water. Staying hydrated may boost a particular immune response to enable your body to better fight the viruses. Coffee is not included as part of fluids, because guess what? It will make you dehydrated. Shoot for six to eight glasses of water per day, more if the weather is hot.

Buy a Bottle of Hand Sanitizer Let's face it, you can't always get to a sink when you need to wash germs off of your hands. Keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer is a good idea to help disinfect hands and prevent flu and cold viruses.

3 6

Exercise to Strengthen Your Immunity Exercise! Because not only makes you feel great and helps you stay fit, but it also boosts your immune system and can help prevent cold and flu viruses from making you sick. Additionally, warding off extra weight is important for overall health, particularly when it comes to preventing colds and flu.

Eat Healthy Foods A healthy diet can strengthen your immune system — and help you prevent flu and cold viruses from attacking. Fruits, vegetables, low-fat proteins, and complex carbohydrates are the keys to good nutrition that will stoke your immune system.

Chopard

Timekeeper of Porsche Motorsport in Bahrain The 7th round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the 6 Hours of Bahrain, took place in Sakhir on November 15th. Proudly supporting Porsche Motorsport as Official Timing Partner since the beginning of this season, Chopard has been following the teams with great expectations of victory. At the 6 Hours of Bahrain, for the first time this year, both Porsche 919 Hybrid crews were part of the podium ceremony finishing second and third. In the LMGTE Pro class race, the two Porsche 911 RSR ended the race in fourth and fifth positions, narrowly missing podium placing. The trio of Romain Dumas (France), Neel Jani (Switzerland) and Marc Lieb (Germany) finished second in round seven of the FIA World Endurance Championship in Bahrain. Immediately behind them the sister car crossed the line. Timo Bernhard (Germany), Brendon Hartley (New Zealand) and Mark Webber (Australia) came third in the six-hour race. Dumas started from pole position and stayed in front until he was passed by a Toyota on lap five. He took the lead and held it until his pit stop for fuel and tyres after 30 laps. Dumas handed over to Lieb after 61 laps with the car lying in second. On lap 100 he overtook an Audi. After 123 laps Jani took over car number 14 in second position. After 154 laps, on fresher tyres, he was the faster of the two 919 Hybrids and passed the sister car for second position. Hartley started from third on the grid, improved to second, but then dropped behind the two Toyotas. Soon he suffered from problems with the brake temperatures. When he handed over the car to Bernhard after 48 laps, he had improved to third. Bernhard was leading the race after lap 79. When he handed over the car to Webber after 110 laps. Webber refuelled and received fresh tyres after 141 laps. Porsche team and Webber together decided to take the risk of saving time by not changing tyres and only refuelling the car to go to the finish of the race. Great fights for position in the beginning and strategies that produced exciting outcomes in the end were the result of the penultimate round of the world championship, along with high temperatures of over 30 degrees.

Bruce Willis

Mathew Perry

Bruce Willis is known for his roles in Blockbuster movies such as “Pulp Fiction” and “The Sixth Sense”, but he had also made a name for himself as a harmonica player before he became an actor. Earlier in life, he played with an R&B group called Loose Goose. He continued to play the harmonica for fun, even when his acting career took off, a skill that came in handy in 2013 when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” and played the harmonica during his opening monologue.

As a kid, “Friends” star Matthew Perry loved tennis and was so good at the sport that he played on the junior tennis circuit. Perry was highly-ranked for many years, including the third-ranked junior doubles player in Canada at one point. When he lost an important tournament in the 1980s, he became less interested in the sport and began to focus more on acting, eventually moving to Los Angeles to pursue his newfound hobby.
