Your Local Sports Medicine Facility

See The Trainer has been the area’s leading soft goods, rehabilitation, and bracing products provider since 1996. See The Trainer only provides the highest quality of orthopedic, durable medical, and rehabilitation products available. Their team loves teaching their patients about their injuries and finding the right product just for them. They encourage you to come in so that you can be properly fit with a product and can ask any questions that you may have.

I’ve stopped in to See The Trainer to get fitted for a knee, elbow, and back brace throughout the years. The customer service was fantastic every time...Will definitely come back due to my fantastic experience with the business altogether.” - Jordan K.

When I had a knee injury and needed a supportive/stabilizing brace I was referred to See The Trainer by a friend. Kristie was able to help me when finding the right support for my knee issue. It is easy to compare prices to Amazon or other online places but Amazon can’t match the customer service of real life people trained to help get the right fit. Genuinely cared about what I had to say and how my injury happened.” - Conrad C.

ABOUT THE COVER

Exceed Expectations

The Ideal Heating & Air Conditioning team are your trusted home service professionals, available in the Southeast Nebraska region. Their experience in serving the Omaha-metro area allows them to know, meet, and exceed the needs and expectations of their customers. Nebraska-native Corwin Keller is the humble owner/ operator of this amazing company. What do you think makes you different from other companies similar to yours?

It’s all in our slogan, we exceed our clients’ expectations. Whether it’s terms of endearment or looking at the entire picture when we are on the job, we go above and beyond for our clients.

Tell us about your team!

Our team is made up of experienced and new guys. We have 45 years of combined experience in HVAC Service, Replacement, and New Construction. We take a lot of pride in doing things the way we would want them done in our own homes for all of our clients. We have a servant mindset—putting others’ needs before our own. Our team wants to build relationships for the future because we plan on serving the Omaha-metro community for decades to come.

What do you like about doing business in Omaha?

Omaha is a unique market that allows for a big city atmosphere, in terms of opportunity in acquiring new clientele, while maintaining the small town mindset of how important relationships and referrals are. By doing a great job and building relationships we are welcomed as if we are the only HVAC company in town.

What changes have you seen in the industry and your company in the past few years?

The changes in the industry have been huge since I have been in HVAC. When I started in 1999, the workforce was large and it was easy to acquire labor. Today, the workforce is a lot smaller so we have taken the attitude of training from the ground up. We provide our team with on the job and classroom training to help them further their experience in the industry so they are worth more. This also allows us to be more knowledgeable on the projects and calls we handle. The past few years for us have been slow and steady growth. We have grown from three employees in 2019 to 22 employees projected for 2022! We are excited to be at a moment in history that is giving opportunity for our new guys to grow in experience, our seasoned guys to gain leadership knowledge, and for people who haven’t had the opportunity to get into a trade to do just that.

What are your goals for your company in the next 5-10 years?

Train more people in the knowledge and understanding of HVAC fundamentals, advanced skills, and leadership. We know when we train the next generation to be leaders, they in turn will create more leaders. This will allow the company to continue to grow and empower people to have a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. Everyone wins!

We provide our team with on the job and classroom training to help them further their experience in the industry so they are worth more.

Data released on N o ve m b e r 1 0 a t t h e Greater Omaha Chamber’s Economic Outlook forum projects a potential easing of Omaha’s tight labor market. The report shared by Dr. Eric Thompson of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln showed that up to half of the workers who fell out of the labor market during the COVID-19 pandemic could return in the next year. That would provide an influx of more than 6,000 workers into the Greater Omaha area over a 12-month period. Omaha’s unemployment continues to fall to record levels, with September data showing a 2.1% unemployment rate in the region. While this is good news for people in the job market, it makes filling open positions difficult for employers looking to grow and expand to meet demand. The projected 6,000 person expansion of the labor force would continue to ease that tension. That’s good news for a region that has already added more than 11,000 workers in 2021 than it had in 2020. “What we have to do is continue to build pipelines between the employers and the available workforce,” said Ana Lopez Shalla, senior director of workforce development with the Greater Omaha Chamber. “We are working to increase access to these employment opportunities for everyone in our community who wants to go to work. This means focusing on internships, on-thejob training, diversity and inclusion initiatives and other programs that open the doors of prosperity for everyone.” The mission of the Greater Omaha Chamber is to champion a thriving business community and a prosperous region through visionary leadership and collaboration. But what are we to do when the ongoing pandemic, among other things, is forcing us to rely more and more on technology to stay connected both personally and professionally? Are there ways we can “have our cake and eat it, too?” Enjoy the benefits of screen time without inflicting lasting harm on body and soul? The answer is YES! Nebraska Community Foundation Publicizes Nebraska Transfer of Wealth Study Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF) announced the findings of their 2021 Nebraska Transfer of Wealth Study, documenting more than $100 billion in Nebraska wealth passing from one generation to another over the next 10 years. Over 50 years, the figure swells to $950 billion. The 2021 study is the third in as many decades and will be a vital tool in inspiring Greater Nebraskans to think about their communities in bigger terms. Scenarios are driven by assumptions about the future, based on historical trends, census data, increasing agricultural land values, household income, and other key indicators. There is always a transfer from generation to generation, as parents pass away and leave their estate to their children, but if the heirs no longer live where they grew up, those critical resources leave as well. Importantly, many Nebraska counties are approaching or are already in the midst of their peak transfer years. The Transfer of Wealth Study illustrates the real urgency to act now. The unveiling of the study findings also marks the beginning of NCF’s Five to Thrive campaign, which urges Nebraskans to consider gifting 5% of their estate to their hometown. Just 5% would amount to more than $5 billion in the next decade—and $47.5 billion over the next half-century. A detailed, interactive map on the Nebraska Community Foundation’s website, www.fivetothrivene.org, breaks down the potential transfer amounts by county and includes information on confirmed planned gifts, total endowed assets, community success stories, and more. A toolkit will help NCF affiliated funds make the most of this auspicious moment. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Rave On Productions Wraps Up 2021 Omaha Series with 15-Year Tradition Rave On Productions will be ending their 2021 Omaha Series with Omaha’s favorite holiday tradition: Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience featuring the McGuigan Brothers. Earlier this year, Rave On Productions launched The Omaha Series which included popular rock musicals presented in various venues around the OmahaMetro. Wrapping up the series, Yesterday and Today has become a popular family holiday tradition and Rave On is celebrating their 15th year with 15 shows at The Slowdown between November 26 and December 31. Yesterday and Today is the most innovative and unique show utilizing the famous works of The Beatles. Each show is created by audience request cards that are filled out prior to the show with the audience member’s name, favorite Beatles song, and the reason they chose that song. Before the show begins, the cards are collected and a set list is created based upon the songs chosen by that particular audience, meaning every show is different. Billy, Matthew, and Ryan McGuigan dedicate every show to their father William McGuigan, who passed away in 1996 after a short battle with Leukemia. Their father owned every Beatles album and shared his love of the Beatles catalogue with his two sons. BUSINESS NEWS UNICO Named 2021 Best Practices Agency for the Twelfth Time

Big Birge Plumbing Offers Plumbing Tips to Prepare for Colder Weather

UNICO Group retains its Best Practices status, once again becoming a part of an elite group of independent insurance agencies around the United States for the twelfth time. This status comes by participating in the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big “I”) Best Practices Study group. The annual survey and study of leading independent insurance agencies documents the business practices of the “best” agencies and urges others to adopt similar practices.

Simple plumbing maintenance tasks performed in the fall will potentially save you a lot of time and money down the road. An easy mistake, like forgetting to disconnect your hose before winter, can lead to frozen, cracked, or burst pipes and wreak havoc on your entire home plumbing system. Big Birge Plumbing compiled a list of plumbing tips to prepare your home or business for this change in temperature: 1. Disconnect your outdoor water hose! This will prevent interior pipes connected to the outside water faucet from freezing and possibly bursting. 2. Make sure all outdoor faucets are free of leaks and drips. Then, turn them completely off and shut off the interior valve for outdoor faucets (usually found in the basement). 3. Protect your pipes! Inspect all your home’s plumbing pipes to make sure they are properly insulated. Exterior and interior pipes throughout your property are susceptible to freezing in the wintertime. 4. If you have a sump pump, make sure it’s clean and in good working order. Pour a bucket of water on it and check to see that it turns on and pumps the water out. If it’s not working properly, or if you notice dampness or foul odors, call a Big Birge plumber. Your sump pump is at lower risk for freezing if it’s well maintained and in good condition. For more information about Big Birge Plumbing or to schedule a plumbing service, visit bigbirgeplumbing.com or call (402) 575-0102.

Since 1993, the Big “I” and Reagan Consulting, an Atlanta-based management consulting firm, have joined forces to study the country’s leading agencies. The agencies comprising the study groups are selected through a comprehensive nomination and qualifying process and awarded a “Best Practices Agency” designation. The agency was nominated by either an IIABA affiliated state association or an insurance company and qualified based on its operational excellence. Over 1,000 independent agencies throughout the U.S. were nominated to take part in the annual study in 2019, but only 262 agencies qualified for the honor. To be chosen, the agency had to be among the 35-45 top-performing agencies in one of six agency size categories. UNICO Group is a client-focused insurance broker headquartered in Nebraska. They offer a consultative and relational approach to their customized solutions for clients all around the nation. For more information, call (402) 434-7200 or visit unicogroup.com.

Senator Hilkemann plans to speak on a bill he sponsored to allow sanitary and improvement districts (SID) to build off street parking facilities to vastly improve parking conditions for Commercial Development projects in western Omaha. He also plans on speaking about the upcoming legislative session as it relates to small businesses. Senator Hilkemann was elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. A Nebraska native from Randolph, NE, he also serves as an alumni to Nebraska Wesleyan University. From 1977 to 2013 he was a Physician (Podiatrist) and he opened and ran several clinics in the Omaha metro. Senator Hilkemann helped his profession achieve numerous accomplishments while serving as its legislative chairman, as president, and as the delegate to the National Podiatric Medical Association. During Senator Hilkemann’s first years in the Association, he chaired the legislative committee and worked with members of the Unicameral to improve the statutes regarding the practice of podiatry. The Omaha Empowerment Breakfast serves as a way for small business owners and operators to network with each other and to connect with larger businesses and agencies within the community. Igloos Return to The Capitol District The igloos are returning to Omaha’s Capitol District just in time for the cold weather. The see-through domes offer guests a warm, comfortable, intimate place to gather with a small group of friends under the twinkling lights of The Capitol District. It’s like being inside a cozy snow globe. The heated igloos were first brought to Omaha last year as a COVID-safe alternative for winter fun. They are spaced throughout The Capitol District’s plaza, with the option of an eight-person dining igloo or an eight-person lounge igloo. Guests can order food or drinks to be delivered from The Capitol District’s many restaurants and bars and add on various experiences like s’mores or cookie decorating kits. The igloos opened November 5 and will remain open throughout the winter months. Each igloo rents for a 1½ hour block of time and costs $150. Wallace anticipates many special events coordinated with the igloos throughout the season, including Santa visits, holiday specials, tie-ins with the Sistine Chapel Exhibit, and opportunities to catch sporting events on The Capitol District’s giant screen. Last year, the igloos even hosted a very intimate wedding. Complete details on events and booking information can be found by visiting capitoldistrictomaha.com/igloos. The Capitol District is a destination dining and entertainment district in Downtown Omaha that surrounds a modern town square known as The Plaza. Located between 10th Street and 12th Street, and Capitol Avenue and Davenport Street, The Capitol District includes diverse restaurants, bars, and services as well as a full-service Marriott hotel with ballroom and meeting services, the 218-unit high rise Capitol District Apartments, Class A office space, and plenty of parking. The Capitol District is within walking distance of Omaha’s best civic, cultural, and entertainment venues and the Riverfront. For more information visit www.capitoldistrictomaha.com. Contact Natalie Wallace at (402) 8808035 or nwallace@pjmorgan.com for interviews or a tour of the igloos. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

PAULETTE Meet Paulette Monthei, the executive director of Outlook Enrichment. Tell us a little about your business. Outlook Enrichment’s mission is to create opportunities for people living with vision loss to achieve personal and professional growth in an inclusive community. We help people living with vision loss and blindness live life independently, confidently engage in their communities, and continue to do the things they love through our programs. These programs include Youth and Adult Rehabilitation Services, Transitions Planning, Independent Living, Adaptive Technology Training, and Support Services. How did you get started in the business? - My father is a retired occupational therapist and my mother worked for the Iowa Department for the Blind. My parents, my sister, and I are legally blind. This fueled our passion to work directly with people with disabilities to impact their lives. I grew up immersed in activities and events for people with disabilities, so a career dedicated to helping others has been the perfect fit for me. The entire Outlook Enrichment team – all legally blind – shares my passion to serve others. I am so glad my career path brought me here. Tell us a little about your family. - My spouse is retired from the military but continues to serve our country working as a civilian at Stratcom. We have five children. Four are now grown and have their own families. I have also been blessed with three wonderful grandchildren. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - At home, you will often find me caring for one of my many indoor plants or working in my 1,500 square feet of outdoor garden space. I love to see things grow and flourish. Who inspires you? - I am inspired every day by the people we serve. They bring me innovative ideas for our services as well as challenges that require me to think outside of the box and to become a better provider of services. I love being a part of their “Ah-ha!” moments when they realize they can do a task and seeing that spark of independence foster within them. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Disability culture is about visibility and self value. As with many groups in society, recognition by others only comes with self awareness within the group of the groups’ differences and strengths. Disability culture offers ways for people with different disabilities to pursue their own, as well as shared goals.” (Disability Studies Quarterly, Spring 2002, Volume 22, No. 2, pages 34-50.) What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - When I first moved to the Omaha area, I struggled finding employment. I previously worked at the executive level in Milwaukee and had 25+ years of experience working in nonprofits for the disabled. I had a master’s degree in public administration, management, and budgeting experience, along with a wealth of other skills...and yet could not find work. When walking into a job interview as a visually impaired individual with a white cane, many employers immediately jump to what kinds of accommodations will have to be made and at what cost instead of seeing all the potential. I encourage you to keep an open mind the next time someone with a disability comes through that door. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - There are times I wish I was the Flash with super speed because there never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything I want to get accomplished completed. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - (531) 365-5320; pmonthei@outlooken.org; www.outlooken.org. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

BURNETT WILSON LAW Meet David Thompson, an attorney at the Omaha firm of Burnett Wilson Law. Tell us a little about your business. - We are a nine-attorney firm with a range of practice areas, including estate planning, elder law, personal injury, family law, general litigation, and business planning. I am a member of the elder law team, and my practice focuses on long-term care planning including Medicaid and VA benefits, as well as guardianships and special needs planning. When you face legal challenges, let our team at Burnett Wilson Law put our 200+ years of combined experience to work. We will give you the attention you deserve. Our office is located at 17525 Arbor St. On our website, you can learn more about our practice areas and read bios for our attorneys. We are united in our mission to help people overcome legal challenges, and we do so with a level of integrity and respect that can’t be found at just any law firm. How did you get started in the business? - I had dealt with several facilities and numerous elder law issues over the years while taking care of my parents and my disabled sister. I started doing work in that area because I knew people in that field and had a lot of respect for what they do. Now, here I am! What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Hasn’t happened yet. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Over the last several years, I have become an avid gardener. I try to spend three or four hours gardening every Saturday and Sunday as long as weather permits. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - Very few people know that I like to sing, and I do it all the time while I am in the shower or gardening. Maybe that’s why I like gardening. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - I heard an interesting quote the other day from a 9/11 first responder being interviewed on television. He said, “You only die once, but you live every day.” If you could have a super power, what would it be? - I have a fear of heights, but I think I would get over that if I could fly. Which talent would you most like to have? - I wish I were a really good singer. See above. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I’ve thought that being an elementary school teacher would be fun. What is your favorite movie? - Singin’ in the Rain. What is your favorite local restaurant? - Dario’s. I also go to Gorat’s every two months or so because I crave their prime rib. Eating beef is a little irresponsible from an environmental standpoint, but I can’t help it. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - That’s a tough one. Thomas Jefferson or Leonardo da Vinci...I’m really not sure. da Vinci probably wouldn’t be very social, but it’d still be quite the story.

BIG BIRGE PLUMBING Meet Jenda Gebhardt, the dispatcher at Big Birge Plumbing. Tell us a little about your business. - Big Birge Plumbing wants to provide their customers with a down to earth experience and be honest about what the customer truly needs done. The plumbers we have at Big Birge make this even more possible by leaving our customers homes as clean as they found them. Truly, this company works as a team, and it makes coming to work enjoyable. Brad and Lallenia have always been welcoming to me and making me feel like part of this team. How did you get started in the business? - In my previous years, I have done many different things than I am currently doing in my position at Big Birge Plumbing. I worked in two different local barns in Omaha, occupying my days working with horses and tending to their daily needs. Also, during this time, I volunteered at our church in Fort Calhoun in the office during our religious education classes, this is where I developed many technology skills while managing the children. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? Now a days, many dispatcher positions have requirements that I would have not been able to fulfill due to my working history. The biggest challenge that I have faced would be finding my way into my current position. I am very appreciative of Big Birge to give me the opportunity and chance to work here, coming from a background of working with animals and horses.

Meet Shannon Motter, licensed alcohol and drug counselor and assistant executive director/clinical director at Santa Monica, Inc. Tell us a little about your business. - Santa Monica is a safe haven for women who are struggling with a substance use disorder. We provide strength, hope, and guidance to the women that come to Santa Monica. How did you get started in the business? - My career started when I accepted a practicum at NOVA Treatment Community located in Omaha. Once I completed my practicum, I started working as a therapeutic mentor eventually becoming a counselor. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Helping to provide a strong foundation for women to become the best version of themselves, live substance free, gain self-worth, reunite with their children, and become who they were intended to be. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spend time with friends and family. I also love to have nothing planned and just cozy up with a soft blanket and binge watch TV. Who inspires you? - My children. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Better late than ugly!” If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Empathetic. If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Owning a flower shop. COUNTRYHOUSE RESIDENCE FOR MEMORY CARE Meet Erinn Drouin, director of CountryHouse Residence for Memory Care in Omaha. Tell us a little about your business. - CountryHouse Residence is a memory care community for folks living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Our team works hard to make it feel like home for our family here at CountryHouse. It is more than just providing care, it is providing love and companionship and sharing laughter and joy. There can still be so many wonderful moments and happy days through activity, engagement, and conversation, and we are happy to have the chance to provide it all! How did you get started in the business? - I was working as the state director of development for the Alzheimer’s Association and had the pleasure of working with memory care communities across Nebraska. Each time I visited a CountryHouse, I would go home and tell my husband that, though I did not want to leave the Association, if I did, it would only be to work at a CountryHouse. So, for me, this is truly my dream job! What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? COVID. The pandemic was devastating to watch in a community like ours. Though we were more fortunate here than most, the separation from people we loved was heartbreaking to see and endure daily. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Working alongside a team that truly cares about our incredible CountryHouse family. There has been no bigger reward than being able to leave at the end of the day and knowing that our residents will be loved regardless of which of our team members is working. Though I cannot take credit for this (it is the work and contributions of our entire team), working in a such a happy and devoted community is what I am most proud of.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Just be with my kids! The pandemic has forced our hands a bit and shifted the balance of work and home. I cherish every moment that I have with them. It doesn’t matter if we are at a soccer game or reading a book, I love it all! What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My daughter, who is 7, loves visiting CountryHouse. She had spent an afternoon visiting with a resident who had shared fantastical stories about made up pets she was *sure* she had owned. Kate listened enthusiastically through everything. When we left she asked me if the stories were true. I explained to her that, for this woman, she believed them to be true. Kate’s response is something I carry with me daily. She said, “So it does not matter if her stories are true or not, it just matters that I listen.” This is my mantra for everything I do each day here at CountryHouse. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - When I was younger, I would have said that I would have wanted to fly. Now, I would choose the power to heal. I would love the ability to cure others who are sick. What is your favorite movie? - I am a kid at heart when it comes to movies. I love the movie Coco. It is a beautiful and poignant reminder of the powerful and importance of connections between family. Coco also does a wonderful job of introducing a dementia diagnosis in a heart-warming and relatable way. It makes me cry every single time! PERSONNEL NEWS AR Solutions Founder Aaron Newell Attends Conference on Regulation F

McGill Restoration Welcomes Project Manager and Estimator Jordan Bradley

Founder of AR Solutions, Aaron Newell, recently traveled to Chicago in November to attend the American Collectors Association’s 2021 Fall Forum & Expo, where he learned more information about Regulation F. Regulation F is a set of detailed rules covering every aspect of debt collection to make the debt collection experience fair for all relevant parties. The conference gave Aaron a wealth of knowledge to share with his team to understand the paramount changes Regulation F will have on the collection industry.

With AR Solutions, you can trust that your accounts will be handled with the highest quality service so that you can focus your time and energy on what you do best—running your business. For more information, visit arsolutionsinc.com or call (402) 817-3929.

Marine Corps Veteran Alex Bratt Receives Berry Law’s 2021 Reward a Veteran Award

Clearwater Counseling Expands Team with New Therapist, Vanessa Pruitt

“Regulation F is the largest change to the collection laws since the Fair Debt Collection Practice act passed in 1979,” shared Aaron. “It was imperative that we were educated on this topic to the fullest extent possible for our office as well as for our clients to make sure we are in 100% compliance. After the seminar concluded, I felt that AR Solutions has done all the research needed and conducted the necessary implementation of new procedures to comply fully. Agencies that have not taken the appropriate steps to comply are not only putting themselves at risk, but their clients as well.”

Marine Corps Veteran Alex Bratt was the recipient of the 2021 Reward a Veteran Award, given out by the attorneys at Berry Law. Berry Law wanted to reward a local Veteran who has continued to serve the community out of uniform, and to help select a recipient, they invited members of our community to fill out the form on the Berry Law website to nominate a deserving Veteran who has served our country and who continues to serve Nebraskans. Alex volunteered 400 hours to the community, including work with Irreverent Warriors to prevent veteran suicide.

Attorney Justin Kalemkiarian, Nikke Hollenbeck, and Marine Veteran Alex Bratt.

“The biggest part for me, it was a shock to win the award, but hearing that 10 individuals voted for me, it’s just you don’t do it for yourself, you don’t do it for an award, you don’t do it for anyone – you do it to help a veteran,” Alex said. Alex was given a $500 check to help with his volunteer work within the community. Berry Law Firm was founded in 1965 by legendary attorney John S. Release Offers Foster Parent Training to Address 70+ Omaha Kids in Need of a Home Local nonprofit Release recognizes that Omaha consistently has a long waiting list of children in need of foster families to care for them until they can be reunited with their families. In fact, more than 70 children will need a home in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, Omaha has a dire shortage of foster parents ready to care for them. This is why Release is working to address this need by providing training and ongoing support for those who wish to make a profound difference in the life of a child. Registration is now open for Release’s Foster Parent Training which will begin on January 11, 2022, and meet weekly for 10 weeks. In addition to the initial session, Release provides ongoing training and 24/7 support to foster families. Foster parents also receive a monthly stipend from the state for the children placed in their home. Release is particularly looking for families who are willing to work with the child’s biological family and support the goal of helping the child safely return home when the time and circumstances are right. The average length of time in foster care is one year, but this can vary widely from just a few days to several years. Also, there is a great need for families who are willing to care for teens or sibling groups, as many of the 70+ kids needing homes are in these categories. Release provides foster care, mentoring, mental health care, and in-home services for youth and families in Omaha. Founded in 1994, Release is a faith-based nonprofit organization committed to helping families become safe, together, healthy, and free. Through the leadership of CEO Robert Patterson, Kids Can Community Center provided academic recovery to students during pivotal moments of COVID-19 by staying open, hiring educators to provide individualized tutoring to children and adapting school-based programs to accommodate remote learning and full-day programming. Kids Can Community Center will continue to grow into the future. The organization, which operates a South Omaha location and seven satellite sites that include five elementary school programs in North Omaha, recently broke ground on a new building to expand its capacity and programs. This will allow the organization to provide infant care for the first time, which is the most requested service from families. More than 200 nonprofit executives, employees, board members, and volunteers in Nebraska and southwest Iowa attended the virtual Nonprofit Summit of the Midlands, which provided thoughtprovoking sessions to connect nonprofits of all missions and sizes with ideas, best practices, and educational resources to help them make transformative change within their organizations. Keynote speaker, Dr. Atyia Martin, CEO and founder of All Aces, Inc., offered an engaging presentation on what a resilient and equitable organizational culture looks like. Her organization provides an alternative to traditional diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting firms. Jennie Edmundson Foundation has launched the 2022 Capital Campaign in support of the Behavioral Health Unit at Methodist Jennie Edmundson (MJE). Mental health touches everyone, in some form or another. Scott Hartman, chairman of the Jennie Edmundson Foundation Board of Directors, believes quality care can help those suffering from mental illness. His feelings run deep for quality care and quick recovery as he and his family were tragically impacted by the loss of their beloved son to depression in 2019. Hartman strongly feels the environment a patient is in during their treatment has a definite effect on a successful recovery. While MJE has led the community in providing quality care of behavioral health patients, it is now time to transform their existing space into an exceptional environment that nurtures hope as well as healing. They have embarked on a $750,000 campaign to enhance the services and amenities of the Behavioral Health Unit at MJE. This renovation includes patient rooms, TVs, and education and dining rooms, as well as recreation therapy space, an outdoor garden, and places for families to gather. Designed through the lens of their patients and families, the team also involves experts who specialize in improving health care spaces to ensure the best possible care environment exists. To learn how you can make a difference, please contact the Jennie Edmundson Foundation at (712) 396-6040. 134 Women Entrepreneurs Graduate from MLCDC’s Mujeres Emprendedoras Program On October 23, 134 Latino women graduated from the Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC) Mujeres Emprendedoras (Women Entrepreneurs) program. The event, sponsored by U.S. Bank, was held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Salvation Army Omaha Kroc Center. The event gathered more than 100 attendees, participants, and their families who joined to see their loved ones receive their certificates. The women earning a certificate completed MLCDC’s virtual financial education, business plan, childcare, and construction trainings. The trainings offered to program participants will help them to budget their finances, create a savings, find affordable housing, initiate a small business, and more. Some of the program participants have a small business and the trainings will help them continue to run and expand their operations, growing local economies. Since May 2020, when the Women Entrepreneurs program started, more than 400 women have applied to receive training, classes, workshops, and technical assistance for their personal finances and entrepreneurship goals. Training is provided in Spanish to reduce one of the main barriers for Latino communities to enter the entrepreneurship arena. The Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation is known as a place where individuals receive training to open childcares, but the mission at the heart of the organization is to provide training opportunities to low- and moderate-income individuals to achieve financial stability and economic growth through entrepreneurship. NONPROFIT NEWS Santa Monica House Opens New Program December 1, Completes Continuum of Care

Gobble 4 Good: Help Stephen Center Feed the Hungry by Donating a Turkey or Ham

Santa Monica is excited to open a new program on December 1 that will complete their continuum of care for adult women. This program will offer a new level of care, a level 3.3 Intermediate Residential. This program will be equipped with dedicated and professional staff 24/7, and will be the primary treatment experience before stepping down into their other levels of care. They will also provide one-on-one licensed counseling, group therapy, life skills, and support networking to prepare women for the next step of the process.

Stephen Center invites the Omaha community to Gobble 4 Good by donating turkeys and hams to serve those in need. “Donating a turkey or ham makes a difference in the lives of vulnerable and hungry individuals and families for the holidays, and throughout the year,” Executive Director Michael Wehling said. “Our amazing kitchen staff utilize hundreds of hams and turkeys to provide delicious, high protein meals year-round.” In 2020, Stephen Center provided over 200,000 meals to individuals overcoming homelessness, addiction, and poverty. Donated turkeys and hams are also shared with local pantries to help meet community needs. Turkey and ham donations can be brought to the Stephen Center Donation Dock, 2723 Q St. (located off the alley between 27th and 28th Streets), between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon through 4 p.m. on the weekends. Individuals can also visit www.stephencenter.org/gobble4good to learn more or make a monetary donation. Located in South Omaha, Stephen Center serves the homeless, addicted, and those in poverty. The campus includes a homeless emergency shelter, inpatient/outpatient co-occurring treatment, and permanent supportive housing for disabled and low-income individuals. In 2020, Stephen Center provided services to 1,278 men, women, and children and served over 200,000 meals. For more information, visit www.StephenCenter.org.

A woman under their umbrella of care can be with them for up to two years as they progress through the programs available, increasing their chances for long term successful recovery. Each program is designed to partner with women on their recovery journey, empowering them to live productively, drug and alcohol free. Other programs at Santa Monica House include a halfway house, ¾ way house, and Supported Transitional Living apartments. Founded in 1972, Santa Monica House has partnered with over 3,000 women on their journey to recovery from addiction and alcoholism. Reuniting families, reintegrating productive women to the community, and providing exceptional service has been the vision of Santa Monica and continues to be for the future. They utilize evidence-based curriculum, trauma informed care, and strength-based approaches. Year-End Giving to Outlook Enrichment will Fund Youth and Adult Programs As 2021 comes to a close, Outlook Enrichment, a nonprofit providing resources and support to those with vision loss so they can remain independent, asks the community to consider their organization during year-end giving. These funds will go to a variety of programs, including adult rehabilitation services, which help those with vision loss to complete daily tasks like reading a newspaper, getting groceries, or navigating the internet. These services give people the knowledge and confidence to pursue their personal and professional goals. Funds also go towards independent living programming, which provide instruction in adaptive techniques for preparing and storing food, home safety, labeling, cooking, personal budgeting, and other problem-solving skills. Another form of programming offered by Outlook Enrichment is adaptive technology training to teach people with limited vision how to use computers, smartphones, and other devices to become more independent and self-sufficient. Vision changes can impact an individual’s overall emotional and physical wellness. A person struggling with vision loss might withdraw from social engagements, stop participating in community activities, or ask a loved one to complete more tasks for them. This decline in activity can result in isolation, depression, and loneliness. Because of community support, Outlook Enrichment helps all individuals adjust to vision loss through training, education, and support. The nonprofit offers across the lifespan programming to replace the isolation with strong relationships and meaningful activities. CLIENT SPOTLIGHT McGuigan Arts Academy – Where Students Create Boldly The McGuigan Arts Academy is designed to give anyone the opportunity to learn confidence, cooperation, and creativity through the arts. It’s more than the development of talent; it’s the development of the human spirit. The Academy provides students with a unique experience through their collaborative approach to theatre, art, and music education, offering a range of group lessons as well as private instruction in guitar, piano, voice, violin, acting, and art. Young artists and future rock stars have the unmatchable ability to work with nationally recognized touring artists with years of experience. The McGuigan Arts Academy is an extraordinary space to explore creativity in bold, new ways! McGuigan Arts Academy was founded by Billy McGuigan after the pandemic devastated the entertainment industry and left entertainers unable to tour across the country. Billy and his team took their attention away from a national level to a local level, and brainstormed ways they could benefit their community. This led to the establishment of McGuigan Arts Academy. Working alongside Billy are Artistic and Education Director Kimberly Faith Hickman and CEO Kate Whitecotton. When the Academy first opened, they thought it would take a year to outgrow their starting location, but quickly realized after three months that there was a greater need to deliver the beauty and magic of the arts to the Omaha community and moved into their larger, current studio in Countryside Village. One of the unique aspects of McGuigan Arts Academy is their students’ opportunity to work hands-on with touring professionals who are actively working in the entertainment industry. The instructors provide real world experience that adds to an atmosphere that allows their students to explore their creativity.

McGuigan offers a variety of different artistic classes throughout the year, including: • Private Art Lessons • Private Acting Lessons • Private Music Lessons • Scene Study • Improv McGuigan also provides one-on-one classes and lessons for adults, including: • Public Speaking and Crowd Work • Job Interview and Resume Prep • Audition Prep • Voice Over Training • Piano, Guitar, Violin, and Voice Lessons

Read what the parents of future artists have to say: “5 out of 5 stars! My son loved every minute of this experience. Kimberly is such a talented instructor. We are lucky to have her in Omaha! I can’t wait to sign him up for more classes. I highly recommend the McGuigan Arts Academy.” – Matthew M. “I’ve never had kids who didn’t want to leave a camp before...[Our son] liked the variety of learning and said he couldn’t wait to go home and perform again for us...[Our daughter] gained confidence and performed in the final show which made us as parents so proud.” – Kristin F.

HEALTH NEWS Christian Record Services Adds Mental Health Resources

UNMC Researchers Use Intracellular Molecular Surgery to Eliminate HIV-1

Christian Record Services, Inc. recently announced the release of a new series of mental health booklets in large print and braille formats, available now to members free of charge. Penned by Jonathan Betlinski, MD, Rachel Scribner, MA, and Gary Parks, MDiv., the booklets focus on topics such as depression, anxiety, suicide/self-harm, getting help, recovery tools, brain training, and staying healthy. These mental health resources are also available in regular print format at adventistyouthministries.org/resources/mental-health/ mental-health-articles. These resources are part of the Naomi Chapman Turner Library, which is available to members of Christian Record Services. The library has more than 2,000 titles of inspiring and empowering books, many of which can be accessed by mail or online. Each year, the ministry is supported by individuals and businesses whose charitable gifts help ensure programs and services are free to the people they serve. Now through December 31, online gifts to Christian Record Services are doubled up to a total of $10,000, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous matching gift donor. Give online at www. ChristianRecord.org/Give.

A team of University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) researchers eliminated the human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) in a laboratory at a genetic level by gene editing based “intracellular molecular surgery.” The new study was conducted by a team that included Howard Gendelman, MD, Jonathan Herskovitz, PhD, Mahmudul Hasan, Bhavesh Kevadiya, PhD, and colleagues from the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience. The therapy contained a biocompatible lipid nanoparticle (LNP) carrying a CRISPR viral excision cargo. That cargo allowed editing of five separate HIV-1 DNA segments. This was in contrast to the earlier studies which targeted one gene and as such decreased the likelihood that the deleted viral genome would recombine and replicate after the intervention was completed. The study builds on work first unveiled two years ago. In the prior work, a UNMC team, working in a prior collaboration with Temple University investigators, successfully eliminated HIV-1 in a subset of live animals. The team developed a novel delivery platform to excise HIV-1 integrated into the cell genome based on CRISPR technology. The system allowed the therapy to reach then eliminate latent virus inside cells. The results obtained paves the way for animal testing. The mission of Nebraska Medicine and UNMC is to lead the world in transforming lives to create a healthy future for all individuals and communities through premier educational programs, innovative research, and extraordinary patient care. The American Heart Association wants to inform people about the dangers and warning signs of sepsis, a serious heart condition that doesn’t receive a lot of attention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has defined sepsis as “the body’s extreme response to an infection.” While most cases are blamed on bacteria, even viruses such as the flu and the virus that causes Covid-19 can spark sepsis. Professor and Vice Chair for research in the department of emergency medicine at Ohio State University, Dr. Henry Wang, stated that all infections “can make the body overreact and can make the body very irritable and inflamed.” Those toxins end up in the bloodstream and poison the organs of the body, meaning sepsis is intertwined with the cardiovascular system and can endanger the heart. According to the CDC, 1.7 million U.S. adults develop sepsis yearly, and almost 270,000 die as a result. While doctors continue to struggle in spotting sepsis symptoms, some include high heart rate, low blood pressure, confusion, extreme pain, fever, and shortness of breath. People 65 and older, those with weakened immune systems and chronic conditions, and people with kidney problems and vascular disease are at the highest risk of developing sepsis. Dr. Wang advises dedicating a lot more attention to this dangerous disease in order to save lives and improve the quality of life for survivors. The American Heart Association has been fighting heart disease and stroke in order to save and improve lives for nearly 100 years. For more information, visit heart.org #PrintProudDigitalSmart

The National Alliance on Mental Illness states that one in five adults experience mental illness. The average delay between symptom onset and treatment is a staggering 11 years. The need for mental health services and awareness is high, so we spoke to some local experts to learn more. Whether you or a loved one is struggling with a mental illness or you’re overcoming a life trauma, we encourage you to keep reading to find out how you can either find your own help or be a part of helping to bring more awareness into the community. Healing from Trauma Mental illness covers a wide scope of conditions. For some, it could mean an addiction or form of depression, while others may be recovering from a traumatic event. Every trauma is different and everyone has a different story. This is something Jill Krelle of A Better Way Therapy understands very well. On Sunday, September 14, 2014, Jill suffered second- and third-degree scald burns that encompassed 40% of her face and scalp. For her, everything in her life now either falls in the “before” or “after” category Jill Krelle of this event. Over the last seven years, Jill’s A Better Way Therapy required 22 surgeries, four skin grafts, four tissue expanders in her scalp and neck, one Medpore ear implant, one internal pain pump, two spinal catheters, one metal spinal plate, and 29 spinal fibrin glue patches to treat her chronic spinal fluid leak. Especially at the beginning, this all made her feel like a broken person who was of no real value to anyone. There were times when she thought about ending her life. Instead, despite all her inner turmoil, Jill would do her best to get up and go to work every day pretending to be the person everyone remembered. “I just wanted things to be back to ‘normal’,” said Jill. “I worked tirelessly to look perfect and always act happy. I was scared that people would see my scars and it would cause some sort of negative reflection on me as a person. It wasn’t until the last two years that I’ve really started to feel more comfortable with my body and its limitations.” As an EMDR trained therapist, Jill never approaches a situation thinking that because she’s a survivor she can relate to anything a client is going to say. Quite the contrary, she explores their trauma stories with them and asks questions. She realizes that, while she wears her scars on the outside, so many peoples’ scars are internal—but no less painful. “When dealing with trauma I always express to survivors that we can’t judge our experience against that of others,” said Jill. “I’ve had people hear my story and they recoil a bit, as if they have nothing to complain about in their life. I never want to illicit that reaction. What affects us deeply is unique to us and therefore it can’t be rated on a scale of whose suffering is the greatest. We are allowed to let things affect us exactly as they do, and we needn’t apologize for it.” Jill’s experience does give her the ability to understand and empathize with so many different situations, thoughts, and emotions. She works to model things like being authentic and expressing her thoughts and #PrintProudDigitalSmart

feelings which can provide clients with a safe space to do the same. This aids in creating a stronger therapeutic bond which, in turn, can help her clients feel safe to process their trauma. “I am thankful for my education which taught me the therapeutic process and how to practice in so many different therapeutic modalities,” said Jill. “I am equally, if not more grateful for the knowledge I gained after my accident. That is where the true learning came into focus.” Jill is preparing to go in for her 30th fibrin glue patch for another spinal fluid leak. She is dealing with the pain associated but also trying to take in the lessons it teaches. “Without pain, there is no healing,” said Jill. “I think of my clients who experience their own pain, but they deal with it and keep coming to sessions working towards their own healing. It is in these moments where I embrace strength from them. They are a huge part of my motivation to heal. I look back at that fateful day that forever changed my life. I realize that, despite all the trauma, I wouldn’t be who I am today without that event and I know, with certainty, that I love myself more now in the ‘after’ than I did ‘before’.” Mental Care is Health Care Clearwater Counseling, PC is a private practice providing outpatient mental health services at locations in Omaha and Grand Island. We spoke to Kayla Leddy, MS, LIMHP, LIPC, CA, and co-owner, about some of the things we can do as a community to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health illness. “While it’s not necessary to know every detail about mental health care, it is very beneficial to know why it is so important,” said Kayla. “Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also determines how we handle stress, Kayla Leddy relate to others, and make health choices. Clearwater The bottom line is that mental care is health Counseling, PC care. Once you’ve been enlightened about the necessity of mental health care, shed some light for others. Talking about mental health only helps the cause.” If you notice someone struggling with mental health, Kayla encourages you to not turn your cheek and offer help when you can and let others know that professional help is also available. “Before you speak, always think about how your words can be perceived,” Kayla shared. “Consider how you might feel if someone said something to you that was hurtful. Also, examine your own judgmental thinking that may have been reinforced by society or upbringing. Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution.” With winter settling in and the holidays in full swing, this season is beyond busy and it can be easy to push therapy to the side. Make sure you put your health first by keeping your scheduled sessions. This time with your therapist will allow you to address and overcome the worries and obstacles you are facing. The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for seniors who can’t be with family due to a variety of issues or if they struggle to participate in holiday traditions they once practiced in the past. If you have a senior loved one in your life that has these struggles, you may feel overwhelmed with uncertainty of how to care for and include them. We want you to be able to enjoy this wonderful time of year with your loved ones, so we spoke to some local professionals about what you and your loved one can do to keep spirits bright. This is also a good time of year to prepare your senior loved ones for the winter, so keep reading to learn how you can keep them safe during the change in season. Home for the Holidays When visiting loved ones for the holidays, you may see a change in their wellness, which can be overwhelming if you are unsure of what steps to take to keep them protected. We spoke to Collette Mieres, executive director of assisted living at Ovation Heartwood Preserve, about this possibility and what to do next if changes are necessary. “Some may be seeing a decline in their loved one’s health or cognition this season,” said Collette. “This can lead to questions about whether their loved one can safely stay in Collette Mieres their home. Check thermostats and furnace filters. If you see indicators that their home isn’t being properly managed, you may need to act. Such signs can even be early indicators of physical or cognitive challenges that mean they’re no longer in the best environment.” Sometimes the problem is that they’re lonely or simply unhappy in their environment. If your loved one recently lost their spouse or friends, or their support system is dwindling, the issue may be that their social needs aren’t being met. As humans, most of us crave connection with others. Relationships increase our confidence and self-esteem. If you have noticed any of these warning signs and are worried that it is no longer safe or feasible for your loved one to live on their own, it’s time to take action. CountryHouse is devoted exclusively to assisting those living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Their communities focus on residents engaging together and sharing experiences with each other and their families. “One of our Senior Living Consultants would love to learn more about you and your loved one,” shared Ashley, “and using the information you provide, they can either point you in the direction of helpful resources or determine whether assisted living is something you should explore as an option for your loved one.” Managing Holiday Stress If you are the caregiver of an elderly loved one, the holidays may be especially stressful on you as you try to prepare for the festivities and visits from family while also caring for someone. “We can take stress off your shoulders this time of year by doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry so that when family is here, you can visit rather than work,” said Sandra. “Family caregivers often ignore their own health because of the time they are devoting to their loved one that needs assistance.” Key Home Care strives to be a bright spot in a senior’s day when they visit, and while they cannot take the place of family, they always try to bring holiday cheer to their home. Their caregivers will help your loved one send out Christmas cards, decorate the home, and bake special holiday recipes. “We encourage them to share stories of past holidays with us,” Sandra said. “When seniors share their stories, not only is it fun for them, but I guarantee we learn something new every time. They have such a wealth of information and memories, and we are honored to work with them and learn from them.” Sandra said that Key Home Care sees an increase in need during the winter months because seniors are not able to get out as much and often friends and families have a more difficult time making visits to the seniors in their lives. It is reassuring to know your loved one has a caregiver to offer in-home care that will help with shopping, meal prep, and companionship during the cold and snowy winter months. Plus, getting a routine established before the weather sets in is advantageous for everyone! Alyssa Jelinek, community relationship manager at Right at Home, a home care agency, shared with us some of the ways that their caregivers can help you and your aging loved one feel comfortable and at ease this holiday season. “Our caregivers can help your loved one with their everyday activities, and during the Alyssa Jelinek holiday season, this can include shopping, Right at Home

baking cookies and other treats, putting up holiday decorations, and more,” she explained. “We also offer companionship and can take your loved one to look at holiday lights or attend special church services, listen to holiday music, or watch a classic holiday movie together.” Alyssa also explained how important it is to keep in touch with your elderly loved ones over the holidays when they are unable to be with the family in-person. “Loneliness and social isolation is a big challenge seniors face when they are away from their families, so if you have a senior loved one you are unable to visit face-to-face this holiday season, consider getting them a tablet or other smart device that they can video call family and friends with,” suggested Alyssa. “This is a great gift that the whole family can go in on, and is helpful beyond the holidays when weather or other obstacles may prevent families from gathering together. You could also see if they have neighbors or friends in town that you could set up a visit with so they have company through the holidays.” Keeping Traditions Alive If you are looking for a senior care facility for your loved one, make sure you pick a community that brings out all of the holiday traditions to keep senior spirits bright through the season. At Prairie Meadows Alzheimer’s Care Center, the staff boosts holiday spirits by throwing holiday parties, including a Christmas tree decorating party, a cookie cutting and decorating party, and caroling with the residents. Don Woods, marketing director, said that residents especially love hearing from their families when they can’t Don Woods be together through video calls and cards Prairie Meadows that reminisce on past memories. Alzheimer’s Care Center “It’s a good idea to schedule video call visits ahead of time to be sure that the whole family is available to talk,” said Don. “Seniors love to reminisce, and the holidays are a great time to share past memories of holidays celebrated together or family traditions.” Don also suggested reaching out to your elderly loved ones and asking them if they need any help with their holiday shopping as a way to share time with them. “Shop as early as you can with your senior loved one and take advantage of the nicer days before winter really sets in,” recommended Don. “Seniors have been thinking of the holidays for quite some time now, so if you have an older loved one in your life that may need help with shopping, taking them out to the stores is a great way to spend quality time with them and help them feel prepared for the busyness that comes with this time of year.” Midwest Geriatrics, Inc. finds distance to be the most difficult challenge for their residents over the holidays. Jen Smith, director of life enrichment, said that they tackle this challenge by planning ahead with holiday tasks to ensure loved ones stay connected with family when they can’t be together. “We plan holiday mailing activities with our residents so that they are aware of a specific timeline and can add personal notes to cards when they address and mail them,” Jen explained. “Planning holiday tasks helps residents look forward to activities, creates responsibility, and empowers them by involving them in holiday traditions. These connections are so important for residents to enjoy themselves and have purpose.” Jen also told us that there are many seniors with a gift list sponsored on various churches Jen Smith Midwest Geriatrics, Inc. and community groups’ Angel Trees. This is a great way for anyone to become involved and celebrate the season with the seniors in the community. “We all know it isn’t about the gift,” said Jen. “It’s about the time spent together. time in conversation, celebration, and honoring our loved ones is the best way to enjoy the holiday spirit.” Elder Law This holiday season, when gathering with your elderly loved ones, consider talking with them about plans for the future and ensure that they are prepared for the coming year. “Holiday family gatherings will hopefully be bigger this year now that COVID-related restrictions have been relaxed,” said Anne Burnett, a partner at Burnett Wilson Law. “This means that some of us will be spending more time with our elder loved ones than we have for a long time. While this is a time of celebration, it is also a time to ponder the future and think about the care needs of the seniors in your family.” Burnett Wilson finds that after the bustle of the holidays, many clients want to get the New Anne Burnett Year off to a good start. This includes making Burnett Wilson Law sure that all the necessary legal documents are in place, and the Elder Law attorneys at Burnett Wilson have deep experience helping families ensure that this is the case. “Sometimes our clients are surprised at all the ways that we can help,” Anne said. “Part of our job is to help families understand what services are available and where they can go to get them.” The Elder Law attorneys at Burnett Wilson have strong relationships with all kinds of service providers in the area, making them a reliable choice when looking for senior resources. “We do our best to make sure our clients have the knowledge and support they need,” Anne emphasized. “We want to help them feel comfortable about what lies ahead in the New Year and beyond.” Winter Wellness Kyle Johnson with CCA Home Care had much to say on the importance of addressing all aspects of physical health for seniors as early as possible, especially leading into the winter months. “Declining eyesight or hearing, mobility problems, and memory issues can lead to losing the ability to drive, an increased risk of falling, and everyday tasks becoming more difficult to perform,” he said. “These health concerns are even more important to take into consideration during the winter. Kyle Johnson Making sure seniors have mental stimulation, CCA Home Care companionship, transportation for outings, and assistance with personal care or household chores can help keep these issues under control.” CCA refers caregivers who are CNAs and can assist seniors with companionship, personal care, light housekeeping, and much more. Winter Driving Even if you believe yourself to be a pretty experienced driver, winter driving can still have its challenges. It’s easy to forget that winter conditions like ice and snow demand more attention from the driver after months of dry and clear roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 17% of all vehicle crashes occur during winter conditions. They offered some suggestions of their own so we can all work together to lower this number. To start, safe driving begins before you even get on the road. Regular tune-ups and maintenance are the starting point for safe driving all year long. In the winter, be sure to give your vehicle’s battery, wipers, coolant, tires, and other systems extra attention. Before you get into your vehicle, be sure that your windows, forward sensors, headlights, tail lights, and backup camera are clear of ice and snow. Winter conditions also require slow, cautious driving. It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered road, so increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you so that you will have adequate time to come to a stop. Even if you and your vehicle are prepared, crashes still happen and vehicles still break down. Don’t risk getting stranded in poor conditions without the proper materials, so be sure to keep blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, and flares or emergency lights in your vehicle. Even if you don’t need them, they could be used to help someone else! Finally, safe driving – not just in the winter, but all year – requires seat belts for all passengers and appropriate car seats for children, as well as responsible driving. Make sure that everyone riding in your vehicle is buckled up, and that children are correctly strapped in their car seats. To learn more about how you can drive safely and maintain your vehicle this winter, we spoke to some local experts in the Omaha area. Advice from an Attorney Sometimes, in the event of a car accident, a lawyer is needed to help you pursue compensation for your injuries. The attorneys at Berry Law are champions in these cases, and their experience in the field has allowed them to compile a list of tips and advice to help the community drive more safely. We spoke to Attorney Matt Aerni about how to handle winter driving: “Although we know it is coming, the first appearance of winter driving weather is still an unpleasant surprise much of the Matt Aerni time,” Matt said. “If you find yourself in Berry Law a car accident this winter, the fact that the driving conditions were the result of the first winter drive of the year is not a defense you can rely on if you cause a crash that injures another person. Or looking at it another way, winter weather being the first such weather of the season is not a defense someone else can rely on when they cause a crash in which you are injured. Drivers are imputed with knowledge that their vehicles will handle different on icy and snowy roads than #PrintProudDigitalSmart

on dry pavement. This holds true from the first winter storm of the season until the last.” Matt said that a driver is obligated to keep their vehicle under control, and this holds true even on slick roads. Don’t get intimidated by this obligation – it’s easy to abide by if you drive responsibily. This includes increasing the following distance between you and the car ahead and slowing down as necessary to account for road conditions. Just because there is a posted speed limit does not mean that limit applies to all types of conditions. “Such weather further underscores the need to eliminate distractions, such as the cell phone, while driving,” Matt explained. “It is dangerous enough to look at the phone when driving on dry pavement. Doing so when on icy and snowy pavement unreasonably increases the chances of causing a crash that could hurt the driver, someone in the car with the driver, or someone in another vehicle. Keeping the phone out of your hands when driving, especially on slick roads, can go a long way to avoid causing a crash. You will also be avoiding the headache that comes with causing a crash, and the guilt and feelings of thinking, ‘If only I had not been looking at that text that did not have to be looked at.’” If you find yourself in a car accident this winter, give the attorneys at Berry Law a call for a consultation. They can assist you in pursuing compensation to make up for medical costs, lost income, and future needs. Plan Ahead If your business owns company vehicles, it’s a good idea to invest in them to prepare for the coming winter season. We suggest contacting LincTrack GPS Solutions, a national fleet management GPS solutions company that helps business owners monitor where their employees are when they are driving company vehicles. “Our GPS tracking software is great for locating a vehicle if it’s stranded,” said Owner Kelly Jensen. “It’s also helpful for tracking vehicle maintenance. Our devices install in a matter of seconds using our new plug-and-play style GPS hardware. We also offer on-site installation in Nebraska and Iowa.” LincTrack’s GPS software can also provide you with current asset location, position history, speed and landmark alerts, and extensive reporting, all without needing to Kelly Jensen purchase hardware. They use 4G integrated LincTrack GPS Solutions products, including 4K dash cams with AI that detects driver behavior and accident recovery footage from the vehicle. With the ice and snow that are soon going to be covering our roads, this is a great investment to make before your company vehicle finds itself stranded or in an accident. Having spent over 15 years in the industry, Kelly knows a thing or two about safe driving, especially during the winter. He finds that most accidents are caused by driving too fast in poor weather conditions, so he advises to slow down and take your time. “It’s important not to brake too hard,” Kelly said. “Pumping the brakes is a good method when sliding to a stop. If you end up sliding sideways, steer in the direction your car is traveling rather than trying to over-correct and turn the wheel to the opposite direction.” Prioritize Protection LUXE Automotive is a used-car dealership that is unique in the industry due to their LUXE Assurance Protection Program – the coverage plan that costs you nothing. With this program, you can rest assured knowing that you’re protected from unexpected mechanical breakdown expenses with their complimentary 30 Days Limited Warranty and six to 12 months Limited Powertrain Warranty. They are the only dealer in the area that offers this 30 day guarantee and the six month / 7500 mile Powertrain Warranty that comes with almost every vehicle they sell. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

“30 Days Limited Warranty covers any other unexpected mechanical breakdown repairs, parts, and labor at our dedicated network service centers,” said Ben Stecker, sales manager. “LUXE Assurance Protection offers coverage for one month or 1000 miles, whichever comes first with a $0 deductible. And with our Nationwide Warranty, you receive 24/7 roadside assistance, which is a great asset to have during the winter season.” Ben recommended checking your wipers Ben Stecker and washer fluid, as well as tire tread LUXE Automotive and air pressure before you hit the snowy roads this season. These are things that are easy to put off – until you find yourself stranded on the side of the road. Even if your vehicle is “winterized” and ready to go, always be prepared for things to go wrong. “Keep safety equipment in your vehicle at all times, such as an ice scraper, snow brush, flashlight and batteries, jumper cables, and a first-aid kit,” Ben advised. “You will also want to stock up on blankets, gloves, hats, scarfs, and other winter gear in the event you find yourself stranded. Hopefully, you won’t need to use these extra items, but you may come across someone else who does.” Vehicle Repair The fact that 70% of the roads in the United States are located in snowy areas significantly increases the threat of an accident occurring, especially when you consider that driving on snowy roads can take your vehicle 10 times longer to come to a complete stop. Other causes of increased danger are the result of black ice, that often-transparent coating of ice that is nearly invisible to the human eye, as well as sudden heavy snowstorms that hit in Nebraska and decrease road visibility dramatically, plus damp sleet that turns the roads icy and slippery.

In the unfortunate event of a winter collision, the first concern is the condition and safety of all people involved. The next thing that often comes to mind is the condition of your vehicle. That’s where Cars R Us Auto Body, Inc. of Omaha comes in. They always put forth the extra effort to ensure that their customers’ cars are fixed and restored to their pre-accident condition. “Cars R Us Auto Body works with all insurance companies and delivers the finest customer service going—and we offer non-insurance auto-body repair for customers with older vehicles or who are otherwise paying out-of-pocket,” said Office Manager Melia Martin. “We also offer a variety of non-collision services, including headlamp reconditioning to avoid fogging headlights that limit your visibility at night and in storms even further, and rust repair through Krown Rust Control.” Melia Martin Krown Rust Control is an environmentally- Cars R Us Auto Body, Inc. friendly way to treat and prevent rust. When repairing a vehicle with rust, they can perform a full panel or partial panel replacement. They can also enforce preventative measures to keep rust from becoming an issue at all. It is suggested to treat your vehicle with rust protection every year to ensure that it is adequately protected from the aggressive road chemicals that are used for de-icing the streets. When utilizing the Krown Rust Control service, all qualified rust repairs have a warranty for five years. “Rust is an unavoidable problem in Nebraska, so we suggest taking an extra step to prolong your car’s life and to minimize the damage done when rust does appear,” explained Melia. “Frequently washing your car, including the wheel wells and underneath the vehicle, can help to protect your vehicle. Hand washing is an ideal method, as it allows you to regularly examine your vehicle up close and identify

rust before it becomes a bigger issue. To make cleaning your vehicle easier, apply a basic coat of wax.” Another option for vehicle repair is the collision center at Huber Chevrolet and Cadillac. They offer auto body and collision repair services, including anything from paintless dent repairs to major fixes. At Huber, they say no job is too big or too small, and their talented staff will give you exactly what you paid for. We spoke to Service Manager David Bevins to learn more about what Huber has to offer this winter. “Our full-service repair facility employs 22 well-trained technicians and four GM World David Bevins Class Certified Technicians to ensure your Huber Chevrolet vehicle is repaired right the first time,” said and Cadillac David. “There are only 1,268 World Class Master Technicians in the country, 17 of whom are in Nebraska, and Huber is grateful to have four of them!” David said that the biggest reason they see vehicles in the collision repair shop during the winter is due to lack of vehicle maintenance or upkeep, driver inexperience, or driving too fast in poor winter conditions. Poor battery cause is most often the reason their 24-hour roadside assistance rescues stranded drivers. “Winterize your vehicle by checking your tire pressure, age, and condition; battery age and condition; coolant level and condition; steering; suspension; and brake systems,” recommended David. “Bring your vehicle by our service center, and we can help you out. Our services include coolant system flush, induction/injection system service, tire replacement and alignment, and full and complete automotive maintenance and repair.” Huber Chevrolet and Cadillac can price match any local tire price, and loaner vehicles are available with advance appointment. Courtesy transport can also take you home while your vehicle is being serviced. David also left us with one last piece of winter driving advice: “Limit your speed to driving conditions rather than posted speed limits, and try to remember not to slam on your brakes!” Keep it Clean One of the easiest ways to keep your car in its best condition is by keeping it clean with regular washes, especially through the winter months. A great place to maintain a spotless ride is Club Car Wash! They offer a variety of washes ranging from a $6 Basic Wash to the ultimate $25 MVP Wash, so you can treat your car to your preference; all washes also come with free towels and vacuums. “As winter weather begins to settle in, it is important to keep your vehicle clean and clear of road salt and snow that can lead to Trevor Seely rust and corrosion,” recommended Regional Club Car Wash Manager Trevor Seely. “At Club Car Wash, our heated tunnels, hot water prep spray, and 15+ blowers to dry your car can help you keep your vehicle in good shape. Rain or snow, Club Car Wash locations are always open above zero degrees to keep your car snow and salt free this winter!” Club Car Wash is pleased to produce the gold standard of what everyone deserves from a car wash. They pride themselves not only with the quality of their washes, but with the additional amenities and friendly staff as well! They strive to be deeply rooted in the community by making fundraising for the local area a key pillar to their business values. When you purchase from Club Car Wash, you are also giving back to the community. Winter driving can be intimidating and scary, but Omaha has many professionals that can help you get through it. Energy Efficiency

mirageaerial.com | (402) 203-7868 When we choose to be more energy efficient, we see benefits environmentally and economically. According to the EPA, energy efficiency can lower greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, as well as decrease water use. It can also lower utility bills, create jobs, and help stabilize electricity prices. If you are interested in how to become more energy efficient in your home or office, keep reading to hear what local experts suggest! Solar Power Solar power continues to become more widespread with home and business owners, so to learn more about this popular new energy alternative, we went to Everlight Solar, a solar energy company that offers a cleaner way to power your home. “Solar reduces your carbon footprint by producing emission-free electricity for its lifetime. On average, installing solar on your home will be as beneficial as planting more than 100 trees every year,”

said Marketing Team Lead Molly Livingston. “Solar energy provides a pathway for the United States to become fully independent. Homeowners who go solar help lower the United States foreign energy dependence and protect from price fluctuations in global markets. Solar power produces clean energy that aids in resolving climate change compared to traditional sources like natural gas or fossil fuels.” Everlight Solar uses premium, low-profile, jet black panels that lay flat on your roof, Molly Livingston Everlight Solar making them aesthetically pleasing to the eye. “The two main reasons homeowners go solar involve protecting the environment and saving money,” explained Molly. “Solar energy reduces your carbon footprint, upgrades your home efficiency, and improves your property value. Going solar also includes excellent financial benefits. Solar energy employs more people than coal, oil, and gas. In addition, it promotes national energy independence. The United States offers incentives for those who choose to switch. These incentives, such as tax credits and rebates, lower the net cost of your solar panel system.” Everlight Solar saw the demand for renewable energy in the Omaha area, so they moved into the market to bring their cleaner energy solutions to the community. Not only does this offer an energy alternative, but the solar industry has created so many more jobs! “Whether you choose to go solar for the economy, the environment, or yourself, solar energy benefits everyone.” An Array of Benefits The benefits to a company’s bottom line should be motivation enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but Matt Neal, B2B Demand Generation Strategist for Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), explained that some benefits may not be as clear. “These additional benefits may include improved building comfort levels, reduced maintenance demands, and upgraded building control integration,” said Matt. “Doing the right thing is easier now. Plus, most products will pay for themselves over time. OPPD’s Matt Neal commercial energy efficiency projects typically Omaha Public Power have a two to four year simple payback.” District (OPPD) Matt said that he finds the most common culprit of energy loss to be less efficient heating and cooling systems. Outdated (non-LED) lighting fixtures or obsolete lighting controls will also increase energy use. OPPD Energy Consulting can provide solutions to reduce utility costs up to 65%.

“OPPD has many product and service offerings for both residential and commercial customers,” said Matt. “Homeowners can easily start to improve their energy efficiency by upgrading to LED lighting and purchasing a smart thermostat with built-in programming to help optimize your heating and cooling system operation. Check out OPPD’s Smart Thermostat and Cool Smart programs to take advantage of available rebates. HVAC rebates are also available for new AC or heat pumps (15 SEER or higher). Businesses have more complex HVAC systems, but OPPD is your direct line of communication to prioritize your needs.” Other services include energy efficiency consulting, Energy Star evaluations, energy monitoring solutions, and on-site generation programs (traditional and renewable generation). OPPD aims to lower your utility costs through a variety of building optimization strategies, patented technologies, and commercial rebates, and their consultative process is tailored to meet the specific objectives of their customers. “Account executives work with businesses throughout the community – large and small – that have taken advantage of OPPD’s Energy Consulting service,” Matt shared. “From our exclusive rebates to our industry-leading technology, the strategies our team delivers always generate serious results. fixtures and top plates and seal them so to prevent conditioned air from leaking into the attic space. That preps the attic for us to insulate with blown-in fiberglass. We prefer this product over cellulose because it doesn’t settle over time, does not absorb moisture, and is a lot cleaner product. Of course, the baffles we install in an attic are a crucial step in the process, too, because they keep the insulation from blocking air flow through your soffit vents and provide necessary ventilation. Proper attic ventilation reduces the risk of ice dams in the Jen Keller winter and the build up of condensation in Streamline Energy the attic space, which could lead to mildew Solutions or mold.” Streamline uses CertainTeed Insulsafe SP blown-in insulation not only because it doesn’t settle but also because it provides better coverage, excellent sound control, lasts for the life of your home to reduce longterm energy demand and costs; is environmentally sustainable and formaldehyde-free; and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. This isn’t your typical itchy fiberglass. It is actually soft to the touch! Another fabulous offering from Streamline Energy Solutions that is not universal to all insulation companies is a blower door test because not everyone is BPI (Building Performance Institute)-certified to administer them. As a BPI-certified auditor, Jen starts by connecting the blower door device to one of the exterior doors of your home to audit energy loss. Jen also owns Halo Custom Lighting, which can help you light up your home with permanent energy-saving LED lighting for the holidays—or all year long. This sister business has become tremendously popular with versatile and fully customizable lighting options for your home. Comfortably Efficient Pat Killeen, owner of Engineered Controls believes both comfort and energy efficiency are achievable with the right tools. “Today more than ever, building owners want their facilities to be environmentally responsible and healthy places to live and work,” emphasized Pat. “They also want to optimize the energy usage without compromising comfort. Together a tall order to accomplish, but at Engineered Controls that technology is available today.” Engineered Controls can play a very big part Pat Killeen in assisting new and existing building owners Engineered Controls with controlling their buildings’ energy costs. Considering the fact that a building’s lighting and HVAC loads account for nearly 80% of a building’s energy usage, there are plenty of energy strategies that a Building Automation System can provide maximizing the energy strategy options available to building owners. Essentially, Engineered Controls can assist in total building control and help provide a healthier and more energy-efficient environment for occupants. “To help our customers in identifying efficiency areas in their buildings, Engineered Controls, in conjunction with Honeywell Inc., developed an Energy & Environmental Optimization (EEO) program,” Pat explained. “It is designed to leverage a broad portfolio of energy efficiency products and solutions, as well as offer a high level of energy expertise to commercial buildings in the hands of our skilled, knowledgeable, and certified EEO professionals. Our EEO team can help building owners and managers obtain real-world data to help them make fact-based decisions about how to optimize their buildings for occupants’ comfort while saving energy at the same time.” Thermal Imaging If you are looking to get a better idea of where your business’s energy inefficiencies are, contact Mirage Aerial Imaging. They provide baseline and post-damage structural assessments of commercial buildings through a drone controlled from the ground that can capture a sky-view of your building. Their aerial thermal assessments improve energy efficiency in commercial buildings because they identify water infiltration beneath the surface of the roof, which can drain energy. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

“It is advised for the health of any low slope or flat commercial roof that you have a regular maintenance schedule consisting of visual inspections, cleanings, and regular Certified Roof Inspector visits,” said Tom vonAhlefeld, who owns the company with his wife, Sara. “An aerial thermal image provided by Mirage Aerial Imaging can assist in the inspection process by directing inspectors and building managers toward areas of potential water infiltration.” T h e r m a l s c a n s s h ow t e m p e r a t u r e Tom vonAhlefeld differentiations and, if water potentially Mirage Aerial Imaging infiltrated a roof’s outer membrane, the underlying insulation would be wet. Wet insulation holds heat from the sun longer than dry insulation, allowing the thermal camera to “see” a temperature difference. These temperature differences are noted through different colored pixels in the photo. Each pixel color represents a temperature that correlates to the color palette being used; for example, red pixels may signify 70 degrees Fahrenheit. “The entire roof can be seen on one image and compared to a highresolution photograph,” Tom said. “We can also detect and confirm leaks early, decreasing overall maintenance costs due to unidentified leaks. Thermal imaging also potentially allows for targeted roof repair rather than replacement, and decreases energy costs.” We should all try to be more energy efficient, but if you’re unsure of where to start, we recommend contacting these local professionals. They have the tools and resources you need to relish in the benefits that come with energy efficiency!
