Aqua Systems of Omaha will fix your household water problems with our one-of-a-kind line of water softeners and reverse osmosis systems.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

Know Your Water Aqua Systems is a family-owned, full-service water treatment company, in business for nearly 60 years. We treat City and Well water for residential and commercial applications, including water softeners, reverse osmosis, and commercial, bottleless drinking systems. At Aqua Systems, our customers are the motivation to keep producing the best product offering possible. From making our own SmartChoice water softeners, and PureChoice reverse osmosis systems right here in the U.S.A., to a 90-day money back guarantee, we understand quality. Our mission is to improve the quality of drinking water using a variety of methods. In addition to having a variety of filtration systems available, we at Aqua Systems want to help our clients spend their precious leisure time on leisure. Some companies are reluctant to give out a price on water treatment equipment, unless they come to your home for a 60- or 90-minute sales presentation. We offer clear and simple pricing which is available on our website, over the phone, or in the showroom. Whether its City or Well water, untreated water in any home can be hard on pipes, appliances, and you. By drinking un-purified water, you may be putting contaminants in your body you just don’t want. Local City water usually contains higher- than-normal levels of calcium and magnesium, (hardness), which will cause problems around the house. And if you wonder how to improve your drinking water, or how to make your water taste better, our reverse osmosis system purifies water at the molecular elemental level, guaranteeing water that’s healthy and safe to drink!

“I cannot thank you enough for the no BS water softener! The contract is straightforward and the installer was on time, super professional, knowledgeable. and respectful. I will recommend Aqua Systems to all. This was so smooth and I appreciate you very much.” – Stephanie M.

“Your technician was so nice. I didn’t have time to clean things around where he would be working so he helped me move things around, he wiped the floor where he worked, he was so helpful, pleasant, and thorough. Your filter system has done wonders for my health and it’s much cheaper to pay you to change out filters than it is to pay doctor bills.” – Rosemary Z.

ABOUT THE COVER

Don’t let unexpected internet loss stop your business Losing your power or internet connection can bring your workday to a complete stop. You can’t process payments, access files, use your email, and your employees lose access to essential resources. Business disruptions like these can result in thousands of dollars in lost revenue and tank end-user productivity. It can also impact customers who rely on your business. Intangible costs, such as reputational damage, may have lasting effects on your company and put your bottom line at risk. Losing power or internet may seem unlikely, but unfortunately, interruptions do happen. Finding the source of the problem and getting repairs started may take time. Unexpected disruptions like these can be difficult for SMBs (small and medium sized businesses), and without backup services, your company may lose revenue and customers. Business owners need to have backup internet solutions as part of their disaster recovery efforts to support business continuity. Fortunately, there’s a solution that will kick in automatically during an unexpected internet loss — Cox Business Net Assurance. Net Assurance provides high-availability connectivity and combats internet interruptions in two ways. First, if there is a loss of internet access, wired and private Wi-Fi connections will automatically failover to an LTE wireless network. Second, in the event of power loss, an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery backup with surge protection provides around four hours of power to keep systems on. Events like storms and even construction can impact your day-to-day business operations. Dan Kavan, Managing Partner for Firstwatch Daytime Café, knows this firsthand. “With the increasing amount of road construction and building construction that has been happening in and around Omaha, there have been many times that the internet has gone down due to someone disrupting a line, which causes us to have to run systems off line. As any business owner would tell you, that’s a risk because you can’t confirm availability of funds which can mean multiple denied credit cards.”

“Loss of power shouldn’t result in a productivity outage, too. Today’s businesses need reliable connectivity service to keep operations running smoothly,” said Jayte Burns, director of sales, Cox Business. “Net Assurance will reduce downtime and give businesses the protection and peace of mind they need to keep their teams online.” Cox Business Net Assurance is always working in the background to provide a reliable backup solution. The service automatically chooses from multiple wireless providers and automatically selects the best connection for customers, so there is no need for customer intervention. Kavan also shares, “It is all about the customer and Net Assurance is just another tool to make their experience better. They may never know that we have it, or that the internet is down, but that’s the goal - make it a smooth and quick-flowing process.” In addition, businesses can also sign up for proactive notifications for changes in their network statuses, receive round-the-clock customer care, and access to MyAccount online tools — all for one low monthly fee. Learn how to add Cox Business Net Assurance to your business internet plan by contacting Cox Business.

Watkins Concrete Block Marks 75 Years

Strictly Business AUGUST 2021

Watkins Concrete Block, manufacturer of over 1,300 concrete block items in various sizes and colors, is celebrating 75 years of service this year. In 1934, J.B. Watkins, founder of J.B. Watkins Lumber Company in 1889, purchased the Besser Manufacturing Company. His son, Charles Watkins, operated the company at 4215 R St. and the name was changed to Watkins Concrete Block Company in 1941. The Watkins operations were temporarily closed due to World War II and a notable decline in local construction. In 1946, Charles Watkins bought the stock from his father and incorporated the company. Watkins Concrete Block Company, Inc., steadily increased business and achieved great success in the Omaha area. Watkins’ focus on progress kept the company active in acquiring new technology to remain competitive. In the early 1980s, the company constructed a highly computerized automated block plant capable of producing up to 30,000 blocks per day and moved its headquarters to its current location at 14306 Giles Rd. in southwest Omaha. This allowed Watkins to take advantage of Omaha’s westward expansion, increased demands for its products, and to reduce the distance between the plant and raw material sites. In 1988, Watkins was acquired by NEBCO, a company whose operations span the state of Nebraska and supply the construction industry with the materials needed to construct buildings, streets, and highways. Watkins Concrete Block has remained successful by striving to provide superior customer service and a wide selection of high quality products to ensure satisfaction and to help make each customer’s dream a reality. They manufacture concrete masonry units and segmental retaining wall units and distribute concrete pavers, clay face brick, manufactured and natural stone, and a variety of related products for both the residential and commercial construction markets. For more information, visit watkinsconcreteblock.com or call (402) 896-0900. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Rave On Productions has launched The Omaha Series, a season of shows produced ESSENCE in traditional and non-traditional venues around the Omaha-Metro. Leading the shows will be their first-ever artistic/education director, Kimberly Faith Hickman. So far, The Omaha Series season has included Hedwig and the Angry Inch at The Waiting Room in Benson and Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story performed in three different amphitheaters in Nebraska and Iowa. Coming up next is The Rocky Horror Show and Omaha’s favorite holiday tradition, Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience, both presented at the Slowdown. Tickets for both shows go on sale on August 27. Owned by internationally renowned performer Billy McGuigan, Rave On Productions creates live concert experiences with the sole purpose of connecting an audience together through memories and music. Since Rave On Productions’ inception, the company has been operating as an agency to house Billy McGuigan’s touring productions. “We have an amazing pool of musicians surrounding us and knew that our first year had to feature rock musicals and feature them in venues where audiences can really let loose and enjoy the atmosphere as much as the show,” said Billy McGuigan. “Nothing we do is traditional so that opens the door to so many new ideas and collaborations in Omaha.” Rave On Productions has grown to be recognized as one of the top agencies for mid-level touring in the United States and has expanded its roster to include artists that perform throughout North America in Performing Arts Venues with Symphonies and as headliners on top Cruise Ship Lines. Vericred Expands Omaha Operations Following $23 Million Series B Funding New Yor k City-based Ve r i c r e d , a d a t a platfor m powering digital experiences in health insurance and employee benefits, recently announced plans to expand operations in Omaha. The InsurTec h platform, which recently completed $23 million in Series B funding, said the Omaha location will support the doubling of Vericred’s workforce by adding an expected 30-40 highly skilled positions in the Metro. Vericred has hired a husband and wife—Matthew Leonard and Val Leonard, both formally of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska—to lead its carrier and Omaha-based enrollment teams, respectively. “As a technology, insurance and financial services hub, Omaha is a natural fit to support Vericred’s growth,” said Michael W. Levin, CEO and co-founder of Vericred. “We considered locations throughout the U.S. for our enrollments operations, and landed on Omaha, because of its insurance-industry talent, its emerging startup scene and its reputation as an incubator of innovation.” Vericred’s entry into the Omaha market was facilitated by a public-private collaborative of stakeholders, including the Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership, a sevencounty collective representing 44% of Nebraska’s population, and more than 60% of the state’s GDP. Omaha, ranked the best city in Nebraska to get a job in 2021, according to Zippia, has outpaced the nation in finance-andinsurance-industry growth for the past six years, increasing at a rate of 26.2% compared to national average of 7.1%. Vericred is the way health insurance carriers and employee benefits providers connect with new technology partners to deliver seamless quote-to-card consumer experiences. They are not the websites or apps you use to choose a plan or find a doctor. They are the infrastructure—the ‘pipes’ that simplify the complex exchange of quoting, enrollment, and eligibility data between carriers and the technology partners responsible for delivering health and employee benefits to hundreds of millions of Americans every day. Vericred's APIs transmit billions of data points between InsurTech and insurance carriers, powering digital distribution across the insurance industry. BUSINESS NEWS MOWBC Partners with Nebraska Enterprise Fund for Small Business Clinic September 9

Valentino’s Aims to Grow Family Tradition with Franchises Across Nebraska

The Metro Omaha Women's Business Center (MOWBC) is partnering with t h e N eb r a s k a Enterprise Fund for the Bi-annual Small Business Clinic on Thursday, September 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Venue at Highlander Accelerator, 2112 N 30th St. This is "Your Business Check-Up Time"! Most business owners and entrepreneurs have never had most of the resources they need in one place. This clinic will be a onestop-shop to do a business check-up. An opportunity for coaching, Q&A, discussing concerns, and developing relationships with needed resources and agencies. Break-out sessions will focus on legal, funding, insurance, mental health, and so much more. Resources that will be available to attendees include: banking, business/personal security, legal, alt funding, SCORE, mentoring, insurance, SBA, business profiles created (GrowthWheel), business taxes, NBDC, business assessments, financials, city of Omaha, borrowing basics, marketing, sales, DED, business planning, and a small business panel.

With locations in 18 Nebraska cities, Valentino’s wants to add Hastings, North Platte, Scottsbluff, and more to the map. They’re looking for potential franchise owners to open new To-Go and Express locations. Valentino’s To-Go and Express locations focus on carryout and delivery with express “pizza by the slice” options and family value packs. To-Go locations could be featured in business districts or busy intersections, while Express locations could be added onto existing businesses like convenience stores. As Valentino’s continues to pass on their family traditions and recipes, they hope to continue growing their franchises in Nebraska. “In 1957, Val and Zena Weiler opened a little pizzeria in Lincoln that would eventually grow into the respected regional chain Valentino’s is today,” said Anthony Messineo, Valentino’s vice president. “Your store could be our next success story.” Valentino’s success is a reflection of its owners and employees and their commitment to excellence. Valentino’s approach is a lot like the way of life here in Nebraska. It’s striving to always do the best job you can and carry on the tradition. TODD

W. Todd Johnson

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Meet W. Todd Johnson, senior vice president of economic development at Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Tell us a little about your business. – The Chamber is laser focused on making the Greater Omaha area a great place to live, work, and raise a family. How did you get started in the business? – I have loved Omaha my entire life, so having retired from a 25-year career at Gallup, the Chamber was the perfect “next step.” Absolutely no one was surprised when they heard of my move to the Chamber. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Over my career, I’ve done business in countries well known for their corrupt business practices. Running an ethical business in a corrupt country is hard, very hard. In some cases, I had to close down the business instead of “playing the game.” What has been your most important achievement professionally? – I helped Gallup acquire its trademark (sounds ironic, but true) in Brazil and Spain. Those two projects were a big deal. Tell us a little about your family. – I've been with my wonderful wife Mary for 27 years, and we have three great adult sons—Ed, Charlie, and Sam—and I can't forget about Maggie, my golden retriever who can do no wrong. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - I almost died in my mid-20s from a rare blood disease I contracted in China. That was a serious wake-up call. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’ve run 25 marathons in 15 different countries and, as a result, I am getting a knee replacement later this month. Worth it? Absolutely! Who inspires you? – My Father, Wallace H. Johnson – even in his 80s, he has the perfect balance of work, family, fun. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - "Never give in, never, never, never." – Winston Churchill If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Noble. If you had a theme song, what would it be? – "Gonna Fly Now" by Bill Conti (The Rocky theme song). If you could have a super power, what would it be? - The power to ease someone’s pain. Which talent would you most like to have? - You are asking this of a former Gallup executive...self assurance. Love that one. What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I helped Dr. Beverly Kracher (and many others) build the Omaha Business Ethics Alliance. Omaha can and should become the world’s beacon of ethics! What is your favorite movie? - This is the easiest question of the lot. Fletch. I know the entire script (which drives my family crazy). What is your favorite TV show? - Cheers. My college buddies and I would watch every evening after dinner, and easy to say that I have seen each episode (multiple times). What is your favorite local restaurant? – 801 Chophouse. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - (402) 346-5000; tjohnson@omahachamber.org; www. omahachamber.org/economic-development. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

FARRIS ENGINEERING

Meet Michael Wallace, the president/CEO of Farris Engineering. Tell us a little about your business. - Farris Engineering designs the systems in a building that make the building work, such as heating, cooling, plumbing, lighting power, and communications systems. Project types we have experience completing include commercial federal, health care, higher education, K-12 education, and physical plant. At Farris, we understand that our clients are critical for project success. What we do is so much more than delivering projects on time and within budget, it’s working together to meet goals, sharing wisdom and insights along the way. How did you get started in the business? - In high school, I took some drafting classes. I liked designing buildings and figured people will always need buildings, so it should be a pretty secure job for the future. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? Moving into the position I currently hold. Nothing I did in school prepared me for this position. I have picked up skills along the way that have helped, but it is very different from engineering. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Passing the PE test and becoming a licensed engineer. It seems so long ago now, but it was a very significant milestone. Tell us a little about your family. - I’ve been married to my wife Amy for 18 years, and we have two boys, Nathan (16) and Joel (14). What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Getting married. Up until that point, it was all about me. After that it became all about my wife and the life we would build together. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I lettered in college for three years as the coxswain on the rowing team. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Read everything you can get your hands on, but primarily non-fiction books. Even if you do not agree with what someone is writing, it gives you an education into how others think, process, and come up with their opinions. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Responsible. Which talent would you most like to have? - Communicator. As an engineer it is not natural for me, and yet in my position it is so important. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Commercial pilot. What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - The Rise of Carry: The Dangerous Consequences of Volatility Suppression and the New Financial Order of Decaying Growth and Recurring Crisis. It is a hard book to describe and covers so many financial areas that it is a difficult read, but it does have some valuable insights into how loans leverage and affect different markets and, in many cases, force the government’s hand when economic downturns occur. What is your favorite movie? - Planes. What is your favorite local restaurant? - Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Bob Hoover. Dinner would be great, but I would really have liked to fly with him. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - (402) 330-5900; mwallace@farris-usa.com; farris-usa.com. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Meet Brent Mencke, senior estimator and account manager at BELFOR Property Restoration. Tell us a little about your business. - BELFOR's origins date back to 1946. However BELFOR, as it is today, was formed in 1998. It is a general contracting firm organized to provide emergency services to preserve and restore residential, commercial, industrial, educational, agricultural, religious properties, and more that have sustained damages from fire, wind, water, etc. In addition to structures, BELFOR offers many specialized restoration services for personal belongings, business documents, and equipment, to name a few. How did you get started in the business? – I started working in property restoration upon completion of college. I saw it as an opportunity to work in a field of construction that was less impacted by economic changes, most notably the real estate bubble which led to the Great Recession of the late 2000s. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? Adapting to the ever-changing way that projects are managed in the restoration industry. Because most of the services that BELFOR offers are filed as insurance claims, there are various methods of documenting, estimating, invoicing, and receiving payments that are unique to each insurance carrier. What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Opening a new BELFOR office in Omaha, essentially from scratch. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Moving from Omaha to Colorado Springs. Diving into a new market I had never been before and having to build new business and social relationships quickly exposed me to what my strengths and weaknesses were. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Going out to brunch at one of the many great restaurants in town and enjoying a cup of coffee without looking at my phone or caring about the time. What is the most unique of interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I am an excellent marksman with a rifle and shotgun. I enjoy pheasant hunting and trap shooting. Who inspires you? – WWII leaders like George S. Patton and Winston Churchill have always been historic figures that captivated and inspired me. I have always been drawn to people with conviction. If you are sure of yourself and what you believe, others will believe and follow you. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” – Mahatma Gahdhi If you could only choose one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Empathetic. If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “Love and Happiness” by Al Green. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – Commercial architect. I like the idea of being associated with creating something tangible that others can experience and appreciate. What is your favorite movie? – The Godfather. What is your favorite TV show? – Seinfeld and Star Trek TNG. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Theodore Roosevelt. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? – (402) 891-1300; brent.mencke@us.belfor.com; www.belfor.com/en/ us/belfor-usa-offices/nebraska/omaha. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Greater Omaha Chamber President and CEO David G. Brown Announces 2022 Retirement David G. Brown, president and CEO, Greater Omaha Chamber, announced on July 9 that he will retire in 2022, leaving a legacy that has seen an 88% increase in the region’s average GDP since the start of his tenure in 2003. “Serving this community has been an incredible pleasure and true honor. Nearly 20 years ago, my family and I made the intentional decision to choose Greater Omaha as our home. Over the past many years, I have had the great privilege of working side-by-side with committed officials from many states, business and civic leaders, community volunteers, a remarkable board of directors, and a passionate team. Together, we have diligently aspired to elevate Greater Omaha as a prosperous region, with inclusive opportunities for all. I could not be more grateful to our many stakeholders and partners, and know that Greater Omaha’s future is bright. You have my humble thanks, my full appreciation, and my total respect,” Brown said. During his tenure, the chamber expanded the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership from a three-county, Nebraskabased partnership, to a two-state (Nebraska, Iowa), seven-county collaborative representing 44% of Nebraska’s population, and more than 60% of the state’s GDP. As a result, the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership successfully landed more than 920 projects, representing nearly 47,000 jobs, and more than $12 billion in capital investment, since 2004. Additionally, Brown led the “GO!” and “Prosper Omaha” campaigns designed to expand the chamber’s initiatives focused on young professional engagement; talent attraction and retention; transportation; site development; support of Offutt Air Force Base; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and quality-of-life. Under Brown’s leadership, the Greater Omaha Chamber also strengthened its relationship with the State of Nebraska, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce, and the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce. JDRF will be releasing the team walk times very soon, as teams will walk alphabetically. They will keep crowds to a minimum in order to keep the immune compromised community safe, especially young children who cannot yet be vaccinated. NONPROFIT NEWS NAMI of Omaha Donates Dozens of Mental Health Books for Psychiatric Patients

Nebraska Animal Loving Advocates Partners with The Artemis Project to Rescue Dogs

The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) Omaha dropped off dozens of mental health texts and information to Nebraska Medicine for patients in the Adult Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) unit. Board members Linda Jensen and Tracy Daley presented the mental health literature to three members of the Nebraska Medicine’s PES unit. The PES staff had created a wish list of titles for their patients and NAMI generously delivered. NAMI wants to remind peers and family support members suffering with mental health challenges that they are not alone and that recovery is possible. Something as simple as a book can provide great comfort in crisis.

Nebraska Animal Loving Advocates (NALA) recently partnered with The Artemis Project to rescue 56 dogs that were awaiting medical care. Together, the volunteers were able to give these dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds a look at their new life by vetting and feeding them before ending the day at their foster family’s home. NALA also participated in the Pick-A-Pooch pet adoption event this past July at the Baxter Arena. NALA’s mission is to revolutionize the way people think about animals and animal rescue, educating them about the dangers of puppy mills and the realities of backyard breeders. They work to provide loving homes to all dogs and cats that they encounter, including the feral, unwanted, damaged, and the lost. NALA believes that every living creature deserves love and has so much love to offer. They approach this mission through their core values of love for all living things and faith that our culture can change, creating a world where rescues are no longer needed. Those interested in adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating, or learning more, visit www.nalarescue.org.

NAMI Omaha, a local affiliate of NAMI, is comprised of more than 75 members and is dedicated to breaking down stigma and improving services for those affected by mental illness. They provide education, support, and advocacy to consumers, family members, friends, and professionals in Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington counties in Nebraska. FAMILY, Inc. Encourages Health Screenings in Children FAMILY, Inc.’s Family Support Team is dedicated to promoting developmental growth and school readiness in children ages 0-5 across Pottawattamie County. Health screenings play a vital role in ensuring children are able to learn and grow to their full potential. By offering health screenings, such as hearing, vision, lead, and oral health, FAMILY, Inc. team members can quickly identify any potential concerns that may create barriers for learning in children served in our family support programs. FAMILY Inc.’s I-Smile, 1st Five, Maternal Health, and Family Support teams work seamlessly to ensure all of these screenings can take place in one location through the Mobile Wellness Unit. In working together, the FAMILY, Inc. team is able to decrease the amount of time parents and children would need to wait for all of these screenings to occur if they would have to make separate appointments. All children enrolled in Family Support services with FAMILY, Inc. receive hearing and vision screenings upon entry into the program and then annually. To make health screenings a little more fun, FAMILY, Inc. will be hosting wellness events at the end of July, which will include a free book for all children from Raise Me to Read, fun activities, games, and prizes. The Hope Center for Kids Partners with Release for New Mentoring Program An exciting new partnership has been formed between Release and The Hope Center for Kids that will provide mentoring opportunities for hundreds of Omaha youth! Release is now operating and overseeing a mentoring program for the young people participating in programs at The Hope Center. The partnership will strengthen ties between the two organizations, creating increased opportunities for referrals, as both share similar values yet provide different sets of services to Omaha youth. Top Spot Cleaning Introduces a New Superior Electrostatic Air Filtration System Top Spot Cleaning & Solutions Too's air management division now offers you a solution for quality air management for hundreds of dollars instead of the thousands people spend to replace or install in-line electrostatic systems. Top Spot is excited to introduce Sanders Filters, HVAC electrostatic air filters with capture rates far exceeding the EPA and ASHRAE indoor air quality guidelines (8-10 MERV). Sanders Filters are rated at 16 MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value), which safely secure facilities and school systems. These high-efficiency particulate containment electrostatic air filters remove 94% or greater of submicron particulates or more in a single pass, with filtration efficiencies at 0.3 microns. This innovative material represents the simplest, most cost-effective method to achieve HEPA or near HEPA indoor air quality for the first time. The current filters that are used in almost all residential and commercial systems are exclusively used to protect the coil of the HVAC system, providing purely a mechanical function. These filters do little to nothing to protect from the sub-micron pathogens that can travel through the HVAC system, possibly infecting people who would never come into contact. Most commercial and residential air filters are rated as a MERV 8 maximum. Even air filters rated MERV 10 are not rated for submicron air filtration which is the size of COVID-19, influenza, colds, measles, viruses, etc. A MERV level 13 air filter which is being discussed as a new minimum standard has only a submicron filtration efficiency rating of less than 50%. This is why electrostatic Sanders Filters reign superior. The European Union has even classified the filters as a Class II medical device. Top Spot Cleaning & Solutions Too offers two different types of immediate sub-micron air filtration solutions, in addition to their permanent HVAC Total Protection System (TPS). The electrostatic filters can be installed in most existing HVAC systems without modification or utilized on-demand as a portable submicron Air Mover System (AMS) for any sized room, hall, gymnasium, or arena. They also provide subsequent testing for surfaces and IAQ to assure indoor hygienic results are achieved, resulting in a safer environment for employees, staff, and visitors. Buying a Home The housing market is currently all in favor of sellers but proving difficult to many buyers. As a buyer, it can be a scary yet exciting commitment to purchase a home, and thankfully, Omaha has many professionals that are here to help you through the process and comfort you during this new milestone. More than a Realtor In a market as crazy as the current one we are in, it is especially important to have a realtor by your side and helping you through the process. Realtors are often more than just your realtor, too; they can open up to you an entire new network, just by building a relationship with them. We spoke to Sarina McNeel, REALTOR® with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate – The Good Life Group, about the role your realtor plays in the home buying process. “In this crazy market, it is very important to Sarina McNeel ® REALTOR Better Homes have somebody who has up-to-the minute and Gardens Real Estate information on property listings to make sure that they are getting in on those listings in a timely manner,” McNeel explained. “Some have different deadlines on offers, or could be outdated on search engines. And going into multiple offer situations, it’s really beneficial to have someone who has creative ideas on how to craft their offer in order to make it more enticing to the seller and make it stand out from the other people who are offering similar things. In the way the market is right now, with people waiving inspections and offering over the list price, just having someone who is an expert in what market conditions are and what property listings should be is extremely helpful.” While many thought that the market would slow down when the pandemic hit, it really did the opposite. McNeel said that COVID-19 hasn’t really slowed down anything in the housing market, but has actually made people realize things about their current homes that they didn’t notice before. “It was an interesting dynamic in the market, because even though a lot of people came to be out of work, there was still a lot of cash flowing in the market, and there were a lot of people who found out that their current home doesn’t suit their needs when they are spending a majority of their time there,” McNeel explained. “That’s the biggest effect that COVID-19 has had on pushing people into the market sooner than they thought they would be. The pace seems to be a little less frantic than the previous six months have been, but it is still highly competitive and market time is still short. Interest rates certainly help people qualify better, but the amount of liquid cash available in the market is an interesting turn, considering so many people were out of the market and furloughed.” With the amount of people who began working from home and discovered they needed a new house, it’s no surprise that the housing shortage was intense. McNeel said that prior to the current trends, in #PrintProudDigitalSmart

an average market, it would take three to four months to run through all the housing inventory that was available. Now, there are only two weeks worth of houses. Despite the shortage, people are still looking for specific features for their home, and the most popular have been large office spaces and spacious backyards. With many employees needing to work from home and have their own work space among the family, the need for office space is no surprise. In addition, staying at home encouraged families to spend more time outside in their yards, and now these families are looking for homes where there is space to build decks, add fire pits, play outdoor activities, and more. Another growing trend that McNeel says is not as obvious is the increasing client population who are in the “empty-nest” stage of their life. These people are looking for a home that has an in-law suite for the family to share, especially for their aging parents, rather than opting for a senior living situation. McNeel says her brokerage is a great environment for both the agents and the clients. Everyone is very collaborative and uses their working relationships to put deals together for their clients. McNeel also says that, in addition to selling already existing homes, if you are looking to start from the ground up, they are available to work with any builder in Omaha. She knows the entire process can be intimidating, but she believes that with her and her team, HomeLife Realty Group, you can find the house you’ve been looking for. “Don’t be scared off by all of the news of the shortage of houses and how crazy the prices are!” McNeel said. “Just because that’s the trend doesn’t mean we can’t get you a house. A lot of people have a misconception that realtors just sell homes, but the most important thing is that we are really your first step in the process. We partner with lenders, will do a full evaluation of your goals, and go through a whole process to make sure you are ready before you go to the lender. We will make sure you understand the process and terminology and what you are committing to before you hit the ground running and start shopping for a home.”

Finally, McNeel wants to remind home buyers that realtors are much more than just your realtors. They have a huge network that they want to share with you, whether you are looking for maintenance work or a new Scentsy representative. “Realtors are people with strong relationships and I think one of the key components in my business is I like to develop long-term relationships with my clients,” McNeel said. “My goal is not to sell you a house, but to have a long-term relationship and help you down the road with anything you need – plumber, inspector, electrician, whatever it is. Scentsy or Pampered Chef? Anything! I try to have a full network of all kinds of relationships that I utilize myself and trust.” Personalize Your Home It’s popular for many new homeowners to want to remodel and design their new house to include their own personal touch and exhibit their taste. While your realtor is likely familiar with the redesigning wants and dreams of homebuyers, not all are experienced with the actual remodeling process itself. We spoke to co-owner of G. Lee Homes and real estate agent Katie Frazell, who can offer the full scope when it comes to getting your dream home. Katie Frazell “As an agent, almost every home I have G. Lee Homes sold involved a conversation about what changes or upgrades were possible and/or necessary, both short term and long term,” Frazell explained. “Adding an addition requires consideration of the topography of the lot, lot setbacks, and neighborhood covenants, so it’s important to have a real estate agent who understands those things and where to find that information.” Frazell believes her team at G. Lee Homes has unique experience that sets them apart from other remodeling/building businesses in the Omaha area. “Our staff all worked as a vendor or subcontractor in some capacity and brought their unique and specialized experiences when they joined our team at G. Lee Homes,” Frazell said. “The collaboration is invaluable.” G. Lee Homes offers services that include exterior and interior remodeling, as well as building custom homes from the ground up. They strive to create an intimate building experience when you are their client, as they want to learn about how you and your family live so that they can create the perfect home that works for you. Furthermore, even if you are already working with an architect, they are happy to review your completed plans and offer their expert insight at no cost or obligation. G. Lee Homes can advise you on which direction to go for the look of your house if you are unsure, and they are well educated on what is popular in the remodeling industry. “Remodeling kitchens and master bathrooms remains popular and a necessity to retain home value,” Frazell said. “As far as trends go, we are seeing clients get really bold with green and blue cabinets and bold tile selections. Gold and brass fixtures have made their way back, with a modern twist.” Frazell also offered her advice to potential home buyers in the Omaha area. She believes that having someone with experience and knowledge are key factors when entering the market. “My best advice right now for someone buying a home with the intentions of remodeling in the future is to be sure you have an agent with experience in construction, or access to an experienced contractor, on your side,” Frazell recommended. “The inventory is still low so before you start house hunting, be sure you have financing ready to go. A great lender is invaluable in this fast paced market!” If you are very new to the home buying process and see remodeling in your future, Frazell can help you with all of your questions and needs. Don’t let the idea intimidate you – with Frazell’s experience and her team’s knowledge, you are guaranteed to have an enjoyable and easy time house shopping and redesigning your new home. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

You love the structure and design of your new home, but maybe not some of the colors or features. It’s time to add your own personal touch and truly make it feel like your own. A great place to start is in your bathroom with Bath Fitter, a one day installation, no demolition, and no mess company. Bath Fitter offers solutions for your bathtub, shower, walls and wainscoting, and accessories. When you use Bath Fitter, they come to your home and take measurements to help them design and build your new tub. “One of the unique aspects of Bath Fitter is that rather than tile installations, we offer custom made bathroom walls, which are uniquely one-piece and installed over your existing bathroom wall in just one day,” said Brandon Delaney, branch manager. “These seamless walls eliminate grout and wipe clean easily, making for a beautiful, unified look.” If you are unsure about which route to go in your bathroom remodel, Bath Fitter’s experts are available to share their knowledge and answer your questions. They Brandon Delaney also offer a lifetime warranty, proving they Bath Fitter are confident that you are going to enjoy your bathroom for years to come. Everyone spends time in their bathroom daily, so make sure that you enjoy yours! With remodeling television shows becoming more popular each year, it’s no surprise that home remodels are becoming equally as common. We spoke to Tim Silknitter, owner of Gitt Construction, about the trend of home remodeling and the benefits that can come from the investment. “It’s very common for new homeowners to upgrade their homes when it’s the right location and the right services, and you just need to redesign your space,” said Silknitter. “30 to 40% of our clients are looking to Tim Silknitter design the home for their family that just Gitt Construction bought in the last year.” Silknitter says that while kitchens have been a popular room to upgrade in the past and present, the master bathroom has often been neglected – until recently. It is the most popular room remodel inquiry that Gitt Construction receives as of late, with screened-in porches and basement finishes not far behind. Silknitter says his in-house designers are an asset to the company and present uniqueness in the remodeling industry. “We have in-house designers that look at your needs and current space, and specifically design a unique space to fit those needs of your family,” Silknitter explained. “Not only does this add value to the home, but it adds value to the family’s lifestyle.” Finally, Silknitter says that when remodeling a home, use discretion if you aren’t planning on being in your home forever. Some home remodels can actually be difficult to sell in the future. “Whenever you do decide to remodel, keep selling in mind. What might be ideal for your family could be difficult to sell to another family,” Silknitter advised. Gitt Construction’s services include kitchen and bathroom remodels, basement finishes, decks, and additions. The possibilities are endless with Gitt Construction, who will make you fall even more in love with your home than you did when you signed the papers. The Final Piece of the Puzzle Title and escrow companies work hard to ensure that your property has a clean title before buying, manage the movement of funds, and prepare the closing documents. They are a key factor in the home buying process, so it is important that you choose someone who is reliable and experienced in the local market – and who better to call than our own Val Kircher with Consumer Title & Escrow. Employing omaha

We’re seeing some interesting trends in the workforce in this post-COVID world we’re living in now, especially when it comes to hiring. Though it is a time of recovery and rebuilding, with the U.S. unemployment rate lowering, companies are still having staffing challenges. Why does it seem so hard to find good people? Or keep good people? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market is tightening. The number of quits or voluntary separations is rising. This increasing quitrate level tells us that not only are employees leaving their existing jobs for better opportunities, but that employers must anticipate filling even more roles—some preemptively. It appears job openings are occurring faster than people entering the workforce or quitting current jobs (roberthalf.com). This creates what you can call a “candidate’s market”—kind of like how you’d define our current state as a seller’s market in terms of home buying. This surplus of open positions creates competition in the market, as there aren’t enough candidates to fill them. This gives candidates much more flexibility in their job selection. So, how does your company stand out? According to an article on Recruiting.com, companies must define their employment brand. This can include t a n g i b l e o f f e r i n g s fo r employees, such as wages, but intangible benefits go a long way as well. The article gives the following ways a company can retain their current employees and attract the best talent that’s out there:

"Companies must define their employment brand. This can include tangible offerings for employees, such as wages, but intangible benefits go a long way as well."

• Identify what makes you different from other employers, especially your competitors. • Talk to your employees. Look at exit interviews as well as

onboarding feedback to find out what is keeping employees at your company and what’s driving them away. See how you can improve and what you should emphasize to candidates. • Take a look at your current career site. Make sure it speaks to your brand and the types of employees you are searching for. • Act quickly and differentiate your company, or your competition will beat you to it! Employees are the lifeblood of companies—they are who you trust to carry out operations and present your product or service to your clients. It’s imperative to a company’s success to have the right people in the right seats, which is what makes hiring a stressful process. There is a lot of pressure to find and retain the best people for your brand, so you have to show the candidate pool why they should choose your company over another. We know there are amazing companies here in Omaha to work for. They go the extra mile to ensure their employees are taken care of and feel valued. We also know there are some topnotch staffing companies here in the Metro, and we encourage our readers to take advantage of those resources instead of trying to navigate such a big decision by yourself. Companies and applications alike can utilize a staffing/recruiting company! We also believe that it says a lot about a company when they are willing to invest in themselves in order to tell their story and reach their audience. Marketing like that may be more often associated with sales, but marketing is also important for recruiting and hiring. The following companies are passionate about being known as a great place to work in Omaha. Check out what they have to offer their employees when it comes to benefits, flexibility, company culture, training and professional development opportunities, and so much more.
