What is the Objective of the SPARK™ Program?

The objective of SPARK is to bring joy and a genuine sense of meaning and accomplishment to seniors’ everyday lives. Residents are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities based on their personal interests and abilities. Whether it be working in the garden, maintaining bird feeders, dancing, attending Yoga classes, visiting horse stables and interacting with animals, going on supervised walks in nature, or spending time with some wonderful pet therapy dogs, SPARK offers something for everyone.

In addition, one of the most popular programs is Culinary Club, where residents work directly with chefs, taking bus trips to gather ingredients and then preparing and cooking meals themselves to enjoy with one another.

These activities go way beyond what the average senior living community offers. They become important and meaningful parts of the lives of residents. Seniors in the SPARK program have also participated in other exciting activities like Reading Club, bowling outings, and even the opportunity to brew their own beer!

A new year brings new opportunities, new beginnings, and the possibility of change. Things in our office have been changing quite a bit recently, but I find that exciting. Change isn’t always a bad thing, and the opportunity to improve is always something to strive for. No matter what your plans are for the year, we hope 2023 brings you success, happiness, and lasting memories.

In regards to the New Year, we all put together our own resolutions for 2023!

This year I want to focus on embracing the changes we’ve made, and empowering my team to continue growing and learning their role at Strictly Business . I want to help each of them reach their full and maximum potential and embrace all of the incredible talents they bring to the office.

On the personal side, I have two resolutions. The first is to travel more. I think we all wish we had more time to see the world, and I want to make sure I’m taking every opportunity I’m given to see a new place or spend time somewhere I love. My other resolution is something I think everyone can take with them into 2023. Gratitude. This year I want to take more time to show my friends and family how much I appreciate them and everything they do. It’s always wonderful to make someone feel appreciated.

Cemre: Resolutions always seem to slip away after about a week, so this year my main resolution is to keep working on my resolutions. This year I want to learn more new recipes, keep up with self-care, lower my screen time, and visit more restaurants in Lincoln. My husband and I just moved here in July so there are a ton of places we have yet to hit! If you have any suggestions I would be happy to hear them. Overall, I am looking forward to starting a new year with the Strictly Business team.

Tessa: I can’t believe we are at the beginning of a new year. These past few months working at Strictly Business have flown by and I am so excited for 2023. My resolutions this year are pretty basic. I want to cook more at home, get more exercise in, and read more books. I have a habit of buying books, but haven’t quite got around to the reading part. My sisters also got me a beginner guitar and guitar lessons for Christmas, so learning how to play the guitar will be a great hobby this year.

Abby: My New Year’s resolutions for 2023 are to take more time to read books and start a journal to learn more about myself and become more connected with myself. Journaling is a great way to process emotions and situations in your day to day life that may get swept under the rug usually. On the physical health side, I would like to go to the gym and get more exercise. That always seems to be on the top of everyone’s list at the beginning of the year but I hope to stick with it!

Derek: I usually avoid making New Year’s resolutions because I have a tendency to create unachievable goals. This year though, I believe that I’m in a better place to make goals that I can reach. My first would be to dedicate five hours a week to doing hobbies that I’ve cast aside because scrolling on my phone is less effort. I miss reading fiction, painting, drawing, and being outdoors. My grandmother was also recently diagnosed with dementia and that has shifted my focus towards cherishing the time I still have left with her and my other elderly family members. Between getting started in my career and settling into married life, it’s been a tough balance to strike, but making time for those family members is important to me. My last goal would be to expand my graphic design knowledge – whether that’s by taking classes locally, watching YouTube videos, or collaborating with other designers. In this field, you either adapt and grow, or you become stagnant. In a sense, that’s how I’m approaching all of my goals in 2023.

Pediatric Dental Specialists Undergoes Renovations

Pediatric Dental Specialists are settling into their newly renovated space. The office has recently put in new flooring, paint, artwork, and TVs to make the perfect space for children and their parents to feel safe and excited to go to the dentist. Disney movies and children’s music fill the air and are played on the TVs in the ceiling above each dental chair. Children’s games are in the waiting room and children are encouraged to come early and play the games to get acquainted with their environment. For a child’s first dental visit, they are brought in for a knee-to-knee exam with their guardian up until the point when they are comfortable, confident, and ready for the big kid dental chair.

Lincoln Federal Savings Bank held their fifth annual Making Branches Bright campaign this December. Each year, Lincoln Federal Savings Bank employees decorate trees at their branch, and dedicate it to a charity in their area. Hasting High Food Pantry won this year’s prize, nominated by the Hastings branch of Lincoln Federal Savings Bank. The trees then get posted on social media where the public can vote for the winner. This year, the prize was $500.

Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital is looking for volunteers for their Angel Dog Program.

Angel Dogs have been bringing smiles and a sense of being at home to patients recovering from serious illness or injury at both of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital’s campuses for more than 15 years. For patients who receive an Angel Dog visit or greet one in the hallway, interacting with these gentle creatures replaces feelings of anxiety, fears, or loneliness with feelings of joy, comfort, and love. For individuals and their families, a visit offers a refreshing welcome change in routine and a fun activity to look forward to during a day filled with therapies.

Angel Dog Volunteer training is held several times a year and is hosted by Madonna’s Volunteer Resources staff and Angel Dog volunteers. The Empowerment Network is celebrating another successful Christmas in the Village. Thousands made their way to the 12th annual Christmas in the Village at 24th and Lake.

How did you get started in the business? - I guess some would call it fate and that working for a bank may have always in the cards for me. It started when I was little, like around four or so. I remember watching my mom come home from the bank, dressed in her fancy suits and high heeled shoes thinking that I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I began working at the same family-owned bank as my mom throughout my college years. After graduation, my passions and education led me elsewhere but as fate would have it, I was given an opportunity to rejoin the financial world and the rest is history.

Tell us a little about your family. - My husband and I have three healthy, vibrant kids who keep us extremely busy.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Becoming a mother would have to be one of the biggest turning points in my life. For the first time in my life, it wasn’t only about me and my husband. There was a definite shift from selfcentered living to selfless living and the emotions you feel are equal parts exciting and terrifying.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My favorite thing to do on a day off is to relax by the pool during the summer months or to organize closets and drawers at my house during the colder months.

Who inspires you? - My mom inspires me. She is selfless, considerate of others, and has always pushed me to be a better version of myself.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Some of the best advice that I received growing up is that no one owes you a thing. It’s up to you to find peace, happiness, and success. You must put the work in to find success in whatever you are doing and if you don’t, you only have yourself to blame. It’s up to you to find ways to overcome excuses and find a way to succeed. I find myself reciting this to my two older children now as they navigate school and extracurricular activities.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - To be invisible.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?The last book I read was The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. The author does a great job explaining the real reason why people succeed despite their background, genetic make-up, or personal connections. In his words, success stems from working ten times harder than anyone else.

What is your favorite movie? - The original Top Gun or Heathers .

What is your favorite TV show? - Currently, it has to be Yellowstone!

What is your favorite local restaurant? - Omaha has some of the best locally-owned restaurants so picking just one is extremely tough. I will name a few – Twisted Cork Bistro, V. Mertz, and Spencer’s all come to mind when I think of my favorite local restaurant. Stokes and Charred are also favorites.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

- COVID had a large impact on both the health and the fitness industry. It also forced people to place a greater concern in their overall health and well being. What has been your most important achievement professionally?

Tell us about your family. - I am the proud father of three boys ages 3, 7, and 9 years old. I enjoy doing household chores with them, coaching and playing sports, and teaching them about healthy lifestyle choices like exercise, eating right, and doing well in school. I believe being a father is a huge responsibility in a time where we lack strong male role models.

What is the most unique thing about you? - I competed in and won the Nebraska State Championship Men’s Classic Physique for two consecutive years. I believe I found a new hobby, and a way to promote my theories and practices that have helped people with their own fitness journeys.

Who inspires you? - I’m inspired by my grandfather Ted Bolamperti. He put himself through Creighton Dental School, ran a multiple-location dental practice in Omaha for over 50 years. He has dedicated his life to serving his family and community, as well as preserving and sharing the American-Italian Heritage Society and social club founded by himself, family, and friends over 40 years ago.

Tell us a little about your business. - Fiserv is the largest Financial Technology (FinTech) company in the world. We are in 100% of homes and process 12,000 transactions a second. We also have over six million merchants and over 10,000 financial institutions.

How did you get started in the business? - I got started back in 2009 after the 2008 recession hit and PayPal was hiring. It was the cool company everybody wanted to work for. I rose through the ranks pretty quickly as I was promoted every eight months there. In my last job, I won an iPad every month for eight months through a sales contest.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I’ve faced professionally is being able to set a standard of expectations and the ability to keep everyone happy and satisfied. Humans are intangible, emotional creatures, so continuing to ask questions and keep constant connection with people in businesses have allowed me to work against that obstacle.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?My most important achievement professionally was working together with a business owner that was able to send one of his children to a university because of our partnership. Combined with my technology and network of partnerships, he was able to build vendor relationships that saved him money connected with the savings through my technology. He had no formal education, so by our partnership he broke the cycle of education that has plagued his family through multiple generations. Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married to my wife, Priscilla, for 16 years and together for 23 years. She is the glue behind Team Rau. I have two children, an 11-year-old daughter named Brieley and an 8-year-old son named Braedan.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - One of my biggest turning points was when I was baptized in the Christian faith at 27 years old. A close second is the birth of my son. I did not grow up with a father, so it made it much more important to be able to raise him into a man. I say if I’m not the man I want my son to be, then change. This keeps me accountable in all aspects of my life.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I have six black belts in different martial arts and have been active over the last 30 years.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Enhance and enrich the lives or others to build lifelong relationships. Do the hard things first and work to control some of the enduring actions in your life. This allows for future hardships to be easier and manageable. Service to others is the rent we pay for our room here on Earth.

How did you get started in the business? - I got started when I was 19, as a fresh faced kid who thought he knew everything. Quickly I was brought to the real world and got taught the realities of the construction industry. Starting out as a tech and later rebuilding homes, I’ve gathered the much needed experience to be set up for success in an estimator role.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I’ve faced is adapting to an office setting. As someone who’s spent a majority of their career out in the field, the mental switch to the opposite has had its challenges.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - As someone who’s been in the industry for the past 10 years now, I believe the most important achievement myself and others in my shoes have made would be to climb that ladder and truly make a career. Starting so young the only thing you’re looking for is a paycheck, and starting as the low man on the pole makes it easy to get stuck in that role. From many hours and hard work I’m happy to say I’ve found my career.

Tell us a little about your family. - My family consists of my girlfriend, Heather, who works as a therapist and our three dogs, Rusty, Arlo, and Kora.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Being in construction you’d think I would like to go home and not go near a drill or hammer, but I really enjoy doing work around the house, whether that be small little things or finishing my basement.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite quote comes from a movie called Whiplash with J.K Simmons and Miles Teller. It’s about a drummer at a high end music conservatory with a brutal instructor who said, “There are no two words in the English language more harmful than ‘good job’.” This quote stuck with me as it means complacency is the halt of progress, which can be applied anywhere in life.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I would choose to be a history teacher, and maybe do some coaching as well.

What is your favorite movie? - I have many favorite movies and it’s tough to pin one down, but I love history and time period films. One I’ve recently watched is called All Quiet on the Western Front on Netflix. It’s set in Germany during WW1 and the language is all German, but it’s a good depiction of the brutal realities of that war. What is your favorite local restaurant? - My favorite would be Stella’s Grill. It’s a small award-winning burger place in Bellevue. My recommendation, even though it sounds crazy, would be to add jalapeños and peanut butter to your burger. Life-altering stuff.

How to Care for Your Child’s Teeth By Age with Pediatric Dental Specialists

BIRTH TO 6 MONTHS

Even before your child starts teething, setting a good oral health routine is important. Keeping the gums healthy will help prevent tooth decay when their first precious pearly whites start coming in. You can begin your baby’s oral health routine by gently cleaning their gums with a warm washcloth and water after each feeding. Gently massage their gums with your index finger to rinse away any remaining sugars from milk (and a gum massage for a teething baby will surely be welcomed). Do not give your baby a bottle during bedtime. This will let sugars sit on their teeth for extended periods of time. Teething babies will enjoy cold teething rings or cold, wet washcloths which are great ways to both cleanse their gums and provide some teething pain relief. Did you know that the bacteria that causes dental decay (cavities) can be transmitted from person to person? It’s true, so avoid using your mouth to test bottle temperature or clean a pacifier.

6 TO 12 MONTHS

At this stage, your baby is starting to eat non-milk based foods and may even sprout some teeth. Continue to gently massage their gums with a wet washcloth after each meal. When their first tooth erupts you can begin to brush with a soft bristle toothbrush—do not use toothpaste yet. After the 12 month mark, your baby will start getting more nutrition from foods, and you can begin to wean from the bottle if you choose to and introduce sippy cups. Make sure you’re familiar with the normal appearance of your baby’s teeth and gums. If you notice white or brown spots or anything unfamiliar, that may indicate decay so contact our office for an appointment with your pediatric dentist in Omaha.

12 TO 18 MONTHS

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Pediatric Dental Specialists in Omaha agree that your child should have their first dental visit by the time they turn one, or when their first tooth erupts, whichever is first. By this age, your child will be eating a regular diet of nutrient-dense food and should be drinking formula, breastmilk, or no-sugar-added juices from a cup. Your child will likely have several teeth at this point so we recommend brushing with a small smear of fluoride toothpaste twice daily to establish a good oral health routine and to get your child used to the routine. FAMILY, Inc. has been the Title V provider for Pottawattamie and Mills counties since 2010 and the 1st Five provider for the same counties since 2016. MICAH House Reaches Holiday Donation Goal

Each Christmas season, MICAH House depends upon the generosity of the community to help make holidays festive for clients. One of the most important goals for MICAH House is to ensure all children have presents on December 25. Business groups and community members generously hosted successful toy drives in the month of December. The gifts arrived just in time for parent shopping days, in which parents selected a few favorites for each child. The then wrapped gifts were ready to go for Christmas day. MICAH House was also able to achieve its Giving Tuesday goal: to have a Christmas stocking for each client to open on Christmas Day because of amazing donations.

Epilepsy Foundation Releases Seizure Recognition Virtual Training Program

The Epilepsy Foundation is now offering a Seizure Recognition and First Aid Training program for those interested in learning what to look for and how to help someone having a seizure. One in ten people will have a seizure in their lifetime. This is a great opportunity for teams, organizations, school personnel, and any group that would like to learn.

The Seizure Recognition and First Aid Training program contains information and activities on seizures, epilepsy and seizure first aid. The first aid procedures in the guide reflect the standard of knowledge and current best practices. This information is presented in a format suited for direct training of the public.

BIA-NE Emphasizes the Need for Resource Facilitation in the Workplace

The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska (BIA-NE) is committed to creating better futures for all Nebraskans through brain injury prevention, education, advocacy, and support.

According to data gathered for the Nebraska Brain Injury Registry, an average of nearly 14,000 people are hospitalized by a traumatic brain injury each year. Sadly, these numbers don’t account for injuries resulting from strokes, aneurysms, infections, or undiagnosed concussions. With these numbers, it is increasingly probable that many people in the workforce have experienced a brain injury. From a construction accident to simply banging one’s head against a filing cabinet, a brain injury can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

The effects of a brain injury are not as obvious as some may think and affect employees’ job performance in ways like problems focusing, memory issues, and sensitivity to light, sound, and other environmental conditions. However, with proper accommodations, these individuals can thrive just as well as an employee without a brain injury.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska’s resource facilitation team can assist businesses and organizations in supporting their employees as they adjust to changes resulting from brain injury. Nonprofit AIM Institute Offers Free Tech Training through Get Into Tech Initiative

Nonprofit AIM Institute is celebrating 30 years of building a strong and diverse tech community in our region. By educating youth and older individuals, including underserved and at-risk populations, AIM addresses the IT professions shortage by encouraging people to establish a pathway to a successful tech career through Get Into Tech and other initiatives.

The need for STEM jobs in Omaha has increased 31% over the past 10 years, according to the Greater Omaha Chamber. Community leaders involved with the Nebraska Tech Collaborative report that Nebraska must add 10,000 tech workers and 300 new tech companies by 2025.

Getting into tech could be a million-dollar decision. Over the course of a 30-year career, tech workers make an average of $1 million dollars more than employees in non-technical positions. Over the past year, AIM has served more than 6,500 participants and better positioned them to pursue high-skill, high-demand, high-paying jobs. AIM offers a free, six-hour workshop that instills basic knowledge and technology concepts. AIM and its Tech Navigators provide one-on-one guidance to participants by:

• Building a custom career plan

• Helping them enroll in introductory tech courses

• Sharing resume-building tips

Release to Move to New Office for Expanded Space

Release is excited to announce that they will be moving their office to a new location. The past few years, Release has grown from 35 employees to the current size of 59 employees. The new location will have plenty of room for all services to be located in the same building.

The Mental Health division, the Foster Care division, the Mentoring staff, and the social work team will be housed at the new location, 4815 South 107th Ave.

The building will allow the space for offices for the staff, training and support meetings for foster parents, and the Release Care Closet. The Care Closet serves any foster families in the community. The space will also provide plenty of room for expansion and growth.

Release works with youth and families that are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare/foster care system. They follow nationally recognized best practices and offer trauma-informed services. Release is locally known in the field for working with clients that have exhausted all other options or are denied by other agencies.

Stephen Center Board of Directors Announces Personnel Updates

Stephen Center is pleased to announce the latest news pertaining to the Board of Directors. President-elect Jennifer Woodward becomes president of the board, and James Ambrose joins as a director.

Jennifer Woodward is an attorney at Koley Jessen, a law firm in Omaha that supports businesses and their owners. It will be Jenny’s second term serving on the Stephen Center board. She will replace current Stephen Center Board President, Madeline Moyer, who has reached the end of her term.

James Ambrose is an advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, where he joined in 1998 after practicing law for five years. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Creighton University College of Business Administration, Department of Economics and Finance teaching both undergraduates and MBA candidates.

“Jenny and Jim bring a lot of energy and experience to our board of directors. Their community involvement to date is impressive, and I look forward to the impact they will have on Stephen Center’s mission to partner with the community, individuals, and families to overcome homelessness, addiction and mental health challenges,” Executive Director Michael Wehling said.

The number of Stephen Center board members is currently 15, as Tom Foley is leaving the board, after serving out his term, respectively.

Humanities Nebraska Promotes UNO’s “Charting Our Path” Traveling Exhibit

Humanities Nebraska is pleased to promote The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) traveling exhibit “Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies.” The exhibit celebrates the 50 years of Black Studies at UNO, sharing the turbulent history and triumphs of one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation.

“Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies” is an eight-panel traveling exhibit sharing historical snapshots of one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation. The exhibit highlights the department’s civil rights origins, attempts to downgrade the department to a program, and the mutual engagement between campus and community. The banners share archival materials such as newspaper clippings, department documents, and photos chronicling events from the 1969 campus sit-in, to the celebration of the “Omaha 54” student activists 52 years later. The history of the Department of Black Studies has been characterized by a constant struggle for survival, but also by the enduring engagement and support of the Omaha Black community.

This traveling exhibit was curated by Claire Du Laney, UNO Libraries Outreach Archivist, and researched in part by Paul Jensen, UNO Libraries student worker. This program is funded in part by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. Cinco de Mayo Omaha Festival Set for May 12-14

The Cinco de Mayo Omaha Festival, put on by Cinco de Mayo Omaha (CDMO), is Omaha’s #1 diverse and largest festival. This year, it will take place May 12-14 along the historic South 24th St. The event will feature live music and entertainment, carnival rides, a parade, food, exhibitors, MISS/Mister Program and coronation, luncheon, Qué Chulo dog contest, games, and concerts. Project Harmony Shares Free Training Course for Keeping Kids Safe Online

Project Harmony is offering a free online safety training course for parents, caregivers, and educators throughout the month of January. Did your child receive a new technology device this holiday season? For some, this is the first time they have access to texting, downloading music, taking and receiving photos, instant messaging, social media apps, watching videos, and more. In addition, they have access to cyberbullying, meeting strangers, and talking to people who are not necessarily who they say they are. That’s a lot of access at the tip of our children’s fingers.

It is no surprise that the internet has changed the way our children interact with the world. According to Pew Research Center, teens are increasingly sharing information through social media.

• 71% post the town where they live

• 53% post their email address

• 20% post their cell phone number

Sharing this kind of information makes it easy for online perpetrators to seek out potential victims, gather personal information, and make contact.

If your child is subjected to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, or even sextortion, make sure they know they are not at fault. We have learned that if a child thinks they will be punished for receiving inappropriate content or cyberbullying – they will not tell a trusted adult. Talk to your child, collect evidence (emails, texts, screenshots of social media posts, etc), and contact the police if physical threats are involved.

Benson Theatre Announces Free Improv Classes for Adults 55+

Benson Theatre is excited to announce the next installment of their series of free classes for adults 55 and over, improv! Interested in expanding how to think quickly on your feet or from your seat? Papillion Foods Donates $10K to NeighborGood Community Pantry

Papillion Foods, the local manufacturing facility owned by Hormel Foods Corporation, announced that it has donated $10,000 to the NeighborGood Community Pantry to help fight hunger in the community as part of the company’s Hunger Action Month efforts. Papillion Foods has donated funds to this organization for two consecutive years.

“As a food company, fighting hunger is near and dear to the hearts of our entire team,” said Ed Finnegan, plant manager Papillion Foods. “Our inspired and dedicated team members make it possible for us to help those in need. We are proud to join NeighborGood Community Pantry in fighting hunger in our community.”

This is the 12th consecutive year Hormel Foods has given funds to its locations to share with nonprofits in their respective communities to fight hunger. In 2021, Hormel Foods donated $370,000 to 44 local hungerrelief organizations. Through this program, disaster-relief efforts and other donations, Hormel Foods contributed $6.6 million in cash and product donations to help address hunger in 2021.

SHARE Iowa and SHARE Omaha Celebrate Generosity on Giving Tuesday

The Community Foundation for Western Iowa is excited to announce that during #GivingTuesday712 on November 29, sponsored by TS Bank, the Community Foundation and its SHARE Iowa initiative raised over $1.2 Million to benefit and ensure the ongoing sustainability of nonprofit organizations in the western Iowa region. Cumulatively, and in collaboration with SHARE Omaha, the metro area celebrated the generosity of over $4.2 Million raised – including 1,800 new gifts made to nonprofits, 100 new volunteers, and 27,000 Amazon wish-list items purchased.

SHARE Iowa witnessed an 82% growth, nearly doubling the number of nonprofit participants on the platform since its launch in September 2022. The feedback from community leaders and nonprofit organizations has been extremely positive and has reiterated how important the new platform is to the region, and several of the newly registered organizations reported new donors during their first Giving Tuesday experience.

The mission of SHARE Iowa is to connect Iowans to nonprofit organizations through charitable donations, in-kind gifts, and volunteerism by its expanded footprint in nine western Iowa counties: Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby. NSSPC Receives $25K Donation from Healthy Blue Nebraska

Healthy Blue Nebraska has donated $25,000 to the Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition (NSSPC). The grant will help increase awareness, decrease stigma, and implement programs aimed at preventing suicide.

Dr. Dave Miers created the Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition over 20 years ago. The nonprofit is a voluntary group of committed and passionate individuals representing public and private agencies, suicide survivors and Nebraskans interested in suicide prevention. NSSPC is recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services as the primary group responsible for coordinating Nebraska suicide prevention efforts.

Last February, NSSPC launched My Companion, an app designed to help prevent youth suicide. It allows young people to cope with mental illness by logging daily journal reflections, accessing resources and hotlines, and submitting anonymous tips. My Companion is an example of a program made possible through grants and donations to NSSPC.

The NSSPC is a voluntary group made up of committed and passionate people representing public and private agencies, suicide survivors and Nebraskans interested in suicide prevention. They are recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services as the primary group responsible for coordinating Nebraska’s suicide prevention efforts. Nebraska Community Foundation Welcomes New Board Members

Nebraska Community Foundation’s (NCF) Board of Directors welcomed two new members last month, following a unanimous vote by existing board members. Beverly Hansen of Bertrand and Nicole Sedlacek of O’Neill join this prestigious group working to build stronger communities and a Greater Nebraska.

Beverly Hansen has served as Bertrand Area Community Fund’s treasurer since its inception in 2011. She is actively involved with Bertrand Area Chamber, Bertrand Agricultural Society, Bertrand Days Events, and other community organizations. She was a board member of Phelps County Community Foundation for six years and chaired several subcommittees for them.

Nicole Sedlacek is the economic development manager for Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), where she helps lead a team focused on helping prepare communities for economic development opportunities. Nicole joined the economic development team at NPPD in 2016, and before that, she served as the executive director at Holt County Economic Development.

Nebraska Community Foundation unleashes abundant local assets, inspires charitable giving, and connects ambitious people to build stronger communities and a Greater Nebraska. BFF Omaha and Nebraska for Abortion Access to Display Artist-Designed Billboards in 2023

Nebraskans for Abortion Access and BFF Omaha (BFF) are joining together to advocate for abortion access and awareness in rural Nebraska through local artist-designed billboards. This project will create advocacy, identify available resources, and spread awareness for abortion access in Nebraska, particularly among rural communities. Submissions were encouraged from local Nebraskan creatives, seeking tactful, one-of-a-kind, eye-catching messages that support abortion access and reproductive rights within the state. Selected artist designs will be announced in January and then be displayed on various rural billboards across the state from February to April. Boys Town Receives Various Awards for Impact in North Omaha

Boys Town programs and staff were recently honored with various awards after making a significant impact in the Omaha community.

The Spirit Award was presented to Boys Town from the North Omaha Community Care Council (NOCCC). This award was given to recognize those who have demonstrated exceptional public service and dedication to the health and wellness of the North Omaha Community.

At the Nebraska Association of Home and Services for Children (NeAHSC) annual conference, two Boys Town staff members were recognized. Senior Director Lisa Pierce was honored as Supervisor/ Administrator of the Year for her outstanding work in the community with stake holders and advocacy for youth. Lisa not only oversees many programs at Boys Town, but also volunteers her time on boards, in meetings, and is having conversations wherever advocacy is being discussed that could impact Nebraska’s youth.

Bradley Vipond was awarded the Childcare Worker of the Year. He has been a Boys Town employee for more than 15 years and is currently a therapist with Boys Town’s Multisystemic Therapy program. Brad has been a leader in advocacy for youth and has an engaging way of quickly diffusing situations and identifying underlying issues.

Finally, Angela Wyatt, a lead multi-systematic therapist, received the “Whatever It Takes” award from MST Institute. This award recognizes Angela’s leadership in supporting MST teams.

Angels Among Us provides financial and emotional support to families whose children are battling pediatric cancer. Any family living in or being treated in Nebraska is eligible to apply. Once approved, families are provided with $500 or $750 a month, depending on household income levels, for the length of their entire treatment plan, up to three years, to help them stay financially stable during treatment. Funds are paid directly to the creditor, which ensures that funds are used for their intended purpose.

In addition to financial support, Angels Among Us launched 11 emotional support programs to provide wrap-around services for all members of the pediatric cancer family. Programs for teens, kids, siblings, and caregivers; events for the family to attend together; and bereavement support services are now offered. Research has shown that, along with the financial toxicity many families experience during a cancer journey, there are PTSD-like symptoms that also appear within the family. These emotional support programs allow Angels Among Us to better fulfill its mission of BOTH financial and emotional support.

MICAH House , a homeless shelter in Council Bluffs, has provided safety and security to children, families, and women for more than 30 years. Located on the Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus, MICAH House serves hundreds of homeless individuals each year – and more than half are children. One focus is to keep families together, while reducing the amount of trauma children experience during a difficult time in their lives. The BUDDY program provides an opportunity for MICAH House children to play, learn, and grow. In January 2019, MICAH House expanded services to include a 26-bed women’s shelter and health care clinic. The shelter offers a therapeutic healing environment and includes a full-time therapist onsite. Youth Emergency Services (YES) is the only nonprofit in Omaha with the sole focus of assisting youth who are experiencing homeless or near homelessness. In 2021, YES provided housing and services to nearly 760 youth in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area. YES offers a full-continuum of services to help youth on their path to self-sufficiency. Through the Street Outreach Program, Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living Program, and Maternity Group Home youth can get connected to needed services within YES. Services include a hot meal, a safe place to sleep at night, and connection with resources to help them return to school, find a job, and secure permanent housing. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Douglas County is a nonprofit organization that trains, empowers, and inspires volunteer advocates to amplify the voice of children impacted by the child welfare system. CASA volunteers are community members advocating for the best interest of children involved in the foster care system. Representation matters and for this reason, CASA volunteers come from different cultures, backgrounds, and communities. CASAs help maintain a sense of urgency and empathy to all children receiving support from a CASA volunteer while recognizing permanency (both legal & relational) is essential to a child’s well-being.

Tri-City Food Pantry is now NeighborGood ! After serving the Sarpy County and Ralston communities for over 15 years, the board of directors is happy to present a new brand. Located in South Omaha, Stephen Center partners with the community, individuals, and families to overcome homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges. Approximately 250 people call Stephen Center home each day through three programs on a sober campus. The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter serves men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. The HERO Program (Health, Empowerment, Responsibility, and Opportunity) is a state-licensed substance use treatment and mental health services program providing substance use evaluations, inpatient services, and intensive outpatient treatment. The third program is Permanent Supportive Housing apartments. These apartments provide affordable housing for those that meet income and disability qualifications. All three programs are nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). All Stephen Center clients have the support of case managers who assist them with the identification of barriers impeding self-sufficiency. Kids Can Community Center ’s mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences. Kids Can serves children ages 18 months to 13 years old. They offer a variety of programs including early childhood education, before-and-after- school programs, summer and non-school day programs, tutoring, and mentoring. Established in 1972, Santa Monica House provides long-term residential programs to adult women battling substance use, mental health and trauma. The program relies on the disciplines of the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous ® while incorporating evidenced based models that are centered around a strength based approach. Santa Monica provides food, shelter, rehabilitative counseling, job acquisition guidance, and resocialization training through our continuum of care. Being under Santa Monica’s umbrella women will be empowered as they progresses through the Intermediate Residential, Halfway House, Three-Quarter way or sober living and Supported Transitional Apartments, to independent living.
